Vanderschraaf, Peter. Justice as Mutual Advantage? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199832194.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Necessary and sufficient conditions are proposed for characterizing the general theory of justice as mutual advantage. Justice as mutual advantage has a distinguished history, but is thought to be false because according to this theory vulnerable members of society are apparently owed no benefits of justice. A repeated Provider-Recipient game model shows by example that justice as mutual advantage systems can require that the vulnerable receive benefits, refuting the Vulnerability Objection. Conditions for defining the community of inclusion in justice as mutual advantage systems are proposed in terms of salience. A justice as mutual system is defined as a system of conventions for sharing the cooperative surplus generated from compliance with these conventions that is Baseline Consistent or stable with respect to possible renegotiation in case the community experiences certain changes in their circumstances.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 11 begins by arguing that, if one takes a contractarian approach, one can recommend to citizens together that they uphold specific normative principles. I then present a contractarian argument for a normative principle, the Principle of Mutual Benefit, that generates intentions for mutual benefit of the kind analysed in Chapter 10. I argue that this normative principle has psychological stability because of a mechanism of ‘correspondence of sentiments’ first proposed by Adam Smith, and which is supported by psychological evidence. The final section of the chapter rounds off the book by using Immanuel Kant’s relationship with the builders of his house to link the Principle of Mutual Benefit with the idea of a market as a community of advantage.

Richardson, Henry. The Unity of the Moral Community. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190247744.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses Thompson’s challenge as to what could unite all persons into one moral community, as described in chapter 2, on the basis of the Specificatory Theory of dyadic rights and duties defended in chapter 3. It first treats the possibility of the mutual isolation of two communities of intelligent beings. Setting out an extended example of this type shows how the Specificatory Theory allows individuals morally to knit their different social communities together from the bottom up in a socially contingent way, thus avoiding being limited by conventional provenance or foundationalist assumptions. The second branch of the argument treats the possibility of extending the moral community to include members that are not intelligent beings. It is argued that the Specificatory Theory supports an open-ended understanding of the moral community, on which such individuals can be included on the basis of revisions of the content of the community’s norms.

Caroline, Shenaz Hossein, and Christabell P.J., eds. Community Economies in the Global South. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198865629.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
People everywhere engage in social and solidarity economics to help themselves, community, and society on their own terms. Through a specific form of mutual aid, we examine the people who conscientiously organize financial cooperatives known as rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs) to bring positive changes to their own lives as well as others. ROSCAs are an ancient practice which are well documented, especially among Global Majority people. This book spotlights people in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Asia who organize and use ROSCAs, commoning and similar cooperative systems, which are made up of voluntary members who cooperatively make regular contributions to a fund that is given in whole or in part to each member in turn. These collective money structures vary greatly across countries in the Global South, composed of ordinary people belonging to similar class origins. People who take up these systems decide on the rules jointly and in the interests of the collective, the members. The book is organized into case studies, and each case engages with J. K. Gibson-Graham’s community economies theory, as well as drawing on local theories and ideas to recognize distinct cultural contexts. This edited collection is the first of its kind organized by scholars concerned about empirical research, and mostly written by Global Majority scholars and activists to write stories using community economies theories about how people, no matter where they live, do their part to make business inclusive.
