Rivera, Takeo. Model Minority Masochism. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197557488.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
There are few grand narratives that loom over Asian Americans more than the “model minority.” While many Asian Americanist scholars and activists aim to disprove the model minority as “myth,” author Takeo Rivera instead rethinks the model minority as cultural politics. Rather than disproving the model minority, Rivera instead argues that Asian Americans have formulated their racial and gendered subjectivities in relation to what Rivera terms “model minority masochism.” Rivera details two complementary forms of contemporary racial masochism: a self-subjugating masochism which embraces the model minority, and its opposite, a self-flagellating masochism that punishes oneself for having been associated with the model minority at all. Drawing from performance studies, queer theory, techno-orientalism, and new media studies, Model Minority Masochism covers a range of contemporary objects across multiple media that variously exhibit and deepen these iterations of masochism: the 1982 murder of Vincent Chin and its multiple performance responses, the plays of Philip Kan Gotanda and Ping Chong, experimental fiction, Marvel comics, and the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Building upon previous models of melancholy and castration, Model Minority Masochism offers a new theory of Asian American subject formation that accounts for both resistance and accommodation vital for the contemporary moment.

Wicclair, Mark R. Conscientious Objection. Edited by Stuart J. Youngner and Robert M. Arnold. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199974412.013.8.

Abstract:
This chapter examines conscientious objection in health care, with a specific focus on end-of-life care. It begins with a brief historical overview and identifies distinguishing characteristics of refusals to provide a medical service that are instances of conscientious objection (conscience-based refusals). Several reasons are presented for accommodating conscience-based refusals, and it is maintained that the primary reason is to enable health professionals to maintain their moral integrity. Two extreme approaches to managing conscience-based refusals are critically analyzed, and a middle-ground approach (reasonable accommodation) is explained and defended. Conscience clauses (i.e., legal rules and regulations that protect the exercise of conscience) are discussed, and it is argued that typical conscience clauses do not provide an appropriate model for public policy in relation to conscientious objection in end-of-life care.

Abstract:
This article sets out a model that attempts to integrate the various theoretical approaches to understanding motivation, embedded within a broadly systemic approach as proposed by Bronfenbrenner (1979) which suggests that the process of human development depends on mutual accommodation which occurs throughout the life-course between an individual and the various systems that they or others close to them encounter in their environment. The model recognizes the importance of cognitive factors and self-determination in behaviour. A detailed account is provided of what we know about each of the elements outlined in the model as they relate to motivation in music.

Crow, Michael M., and William B. Dabars. Interdisciplinarity and the Institutional Context of Knowledge in the American Research University. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.38.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter assesses the accommodation of interdisciplinarity in the American research university in terms of the reflexive relationship between knowledge production and its institutional context. Although the tacit assumption in academic culture is that institutional frameworks have already been optimally configured to facilitate knowledge production, the process remains defined by the traditional correlation between academic disciplines and departments, and, more broadly, the filiopietism and isomorphism that impede the development of new models for the set of research universities. Entrenchment in discipline-based departments mirrors an academic culture that prizes individualism over teamwork and the discovery of specialized knowledge over problem-based collaboration. An overview of theoretical approaches and relevant models in this context precedes a brief historical survey of the institutional accommodation of interdisciplinarity. The chapter issues a call for mutual intelligibility among academic disciplines, and concludes with a case study.
