Abstract:
Background: The Maternal mortality rate in Pakistan remains unacceptably high Objectives: To study the awareness ofimmunization and breast feeding and the utilization of family-planning methods by the women of rural districts of Punjab, Pakistan. StudyDesign: A Cross-sectional study. Setting: The study was conducted in Vehari and Chakwal districts of Punjab, Pakistan. Period: May-July2010. Methodology: A total of 100 women were included in the study. Data was collected, cleaned, tabulated and analyzed. Results: Amongthe hundred sampled women 58 (58%) were educated, and the commonly involved age group in the sample was 21-30 year accounting for59% of the women. Among these 61% of the women have visited a family planning center, while the contraceptive prevalence rate (CRP) IS39%. Thirty eight (54%) out of the 70 multi-parous women have given birth with an interval of approximately 2 years. Only 6 (8.75%) have anoptimum (safe) interval of 3 years. Among the total 90 child bearing women 74(82.22%) have got vaccinated their children, 46 (62.16%) ofthese are completely vaccinated according to the information obtained from the EPI vaccination cards. Among the 13(17.56%) who haven’tvaccinated their children 10 (62.5%) complained of lack of awareness regarding the importance of vaccination. Five (31.25%) complained ofinaccessibility to the BHU. Out of the 90 interviewed women 61 (67.7%) were vaccinated with tetanus toxiod during pregnancy. 82 (82%)women are aware of the benefits of breast feeding. 88(97.7%) out of total 90 child bearing women have breast fed their children with thepercentage decreasing to 83.33% after 6-11 months of age and only 39(43.33%) counting breast till 1.5-2year (optimum age) of age.53(58.88%) started weaning their child between 6-11 months of age. Direct causes of Neonatal Deaths were, 30% birth asphyxia and injuries,35% due to infections (tetanus, sepsis , pneumonia, diarrhea), 20% due to complication of pre-maturity, 5% congenital anomalies and 20% dueto other causes. Conclusions: There’s a need for mass education regarding EPI and it’s compliance so that the target set under MDGs isachieved. Though women of the rural areas are aware of the advantages of breast feeding there is a lot of variation in the duration that thechildren are breast fed and weaned, so there is a need for the provision of standardized nutritional to the mothers by the health workers.

Abstract:
People in the developed world are remarkably unsceptical when our leaders propose projects as grandiose as putting a man on the moon or sequencing the human genome. But can we believe in a project that will halve global infant and maternal mortality by 2015? During the winter of 2006, I visited India and Ethiopia as a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellow and got a feel for the things that make early life so precarious in the developing world.

Abstract:
Malaria, as a key disease of poverty, was singled out for special attention in the Millennium Project of 2000. Recent data suggest that malaria incidence and mortality are now declining all over the world. While these figures are cause for celebration, they must be interpreted carefully and with caution, particularly in relation to Africa. There are daunting challenges ahead for those working to achieve malaria eradication, not least of which is the poor quality of the data on which the work is based. In the absence of an affordable and fully effective vaccine, international funding for malaria control needs to be escalated still further. The money is essential to pay for universal access to a set of simple and proven interventions which would save the lives of millions of children over the next 15 years.

Abstract:
Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 6 has two HIV/AIDS commitments: to have halted and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and to ensure access to treatment among all those in need by 2010. Given the almost universal lack of access to HIV testing, prevention and treatment for children in high prevalence countries in 2000, the achievements of the past 15 years have been extraordinary, fuelled by massive donor investment, strong political commitment and ambitious global targets; however, MDG 6 is some way from being attained. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services have expanded enormously, with new infections among children falling by 58% between 2002 and 2013. There has been a shift towards initiation of lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) for pregnant and breastfeeding women, although low HIV testing rates in pregnancy, suboptimal PMTCT coverage and poor retention in care remain barriers to achieving HIV elimination among children. Early infant diagnosis has expanded substantially but, in 2013, only 44% of all HIV-exposed infants were tested before 2 months of age. Diagnosis of HIV, therefore, frequently occurs late, leading to delays in ART initiation. By the end of 2013, approximately 760 000 children were receiving ART, leading to 40% decline in AIDS-related mortality. However, only 24% of HIV-infected children were receiving ART, compared with 36% of adults, leading to a ‘treatment gap’. In this review, we summarise progress and remaining challenges in reaching MDG 6 and discuss future strategies to achieve the ambitious goals of paediatric HIV elimination and universal access to treatment.

Abstract:
Poverty has been defined variously at different times in different countries. An early attempt in 1899 in Britain was based on resources necessary for survival. This subsistence standard definition has been used as a measuring rod in one form or another in different countries. For example, less than half the average income has been used as a measure in Britain, and minimum wage or multiples of it in Latin America, and so on. Unless a proper definition of poverty can be agreed attempts at its alleviation can have no target to aim for. Alleviation of poverty, though championed by political leaders of all types has proven to be difficult because equitable division of the national budget requires consensus which is not always forthcoming when the "haves" control the levers of power and the "have nots" must make do with what they get. Measuring collective poverty on a global scale has been attempted by several international agencies. The definition used by the World Bank is stark - "people who live on US $1 per day". According to this definition in the Year 2001 one billion people lived in poverty with consumption levels of US $1 or less per day, and 2.7 billion on less than US $2 per day. Now that more than half the world's population is living in cities, urban poverty is presenting a challenge in most developing countries. Within the physical environment of deprivation there develops a culture of poverty with its prevalence of disease, social disruption, violence in the home and outside, and dependence on drugs and alcohol. In the mind set of the urban poor risk taking behaviour is common. The main victims of deprivation are women and children, the aged and the infirm. Evidence is presented to show the stultifying effects on children growing up in poverty. Remedial action is an uphill task, expensive and not always successful. An awakening of social conscience globally brought about by the stark realities of the urban poor living cheek by jowl in close vicinity of affluence and conspicuous consumption has led enlightened world leaders and economists to mobilise public opinion. A meeting of world leaders held at UN headquarters in the Year 2000 proposed and agreed Millennium Development Goals. The goals address not only poverty per se but also its effects. The target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals is set at Year 2015.Progress towards the target has been patchy and depends upon national political maturity.

Abstract:
The objective of this article is to locate disability issues within the discourse of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The idea is to question the failure of the goals addressing disability. MDGs cannot work as a universal remedy. It is critical to foreground the meaning of disability and underscore the reasons for the disabled people's absence from the agenda of the MDGs. Further, I discuss the ways in which state policy has addressed ‘disability’ in a globalising context. Finally, I outline the paradox of identity politics and its nuances based upon an understanding of the issues and related questions from my own experiences as a disabled Indian woman, having to contend with the existential realities of a visible physical disability. The plea is to expand the democratic space to ensure that the rights and needs of disabled people within the MDGs discourse are given due consideration.
