Abstract:
This thesis aimed to investigate predictors of body image which were irrational beliefs, socially-prescribed perfectionism, social comparison, physical activity level and satisfaction with life among university students. Participants were included of 790 undergraduate students from different departments of in a large state university and sample is selected according to convenience sampling method. Multidimensional Body Self Relations Scale, Irrational Beliefs Scale-Short, Socially-Prescribed Perfectionism Scale, Social Comparison Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale and demographic information form were used to collect the data. Multiple regression analysis was used to explain the hypothesized model of predictors of body image. Results indicated that irrational beliefs, social comparison, physical activity level and satisfaction with life predicted body image positively whereas the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism was positive but non-significant. In addition comparing the mean scores of scales by gender, total score of body image was higher in men than women. Findings of this study revealed that social comparison was playing a significant role in forming body image followed by spending little time vs. much time engaging with sportive activities, irrational beliefs, satisfaction with life and having little time vs. average time for physical activities. Results were discussed regarding to the relevant literature.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Paul Gray
There is an image associated with BC students that most, if not all, undergraduates can describe. Though the more superficial explanation only includes expensive preppy brand names, Apple products, and working out at the Plex, the BC image is more multifaceted. A study of consumerism, fashion, status, narcissism, collective consciousness, the self and the generalized other, and even Jesuit ideals provides the theoretical background to the analysis. The data were collected through focus group interviews, surveys, pictures, and observations to form a complete idea of BC image. This thesis explores the many sources of this image, its definition, and the extent to which students identify with it

Arredondo, Aleka. "GENDER-BASED BODY IMAGE PERCEPTIONS AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/904.

Abstract:
Objective: This study sought to examining the gender-based expectations of an ideal body, for self and opposite gender, among college students. Methods: The study used a qualitative approach using thematic analysis. Common words and phrases were first identified and later grouped into category, through open and axial coding respectively. Next, central theme was identified using selective coding. Results: This study examined a total of 145 student participants responses of which 94 were self-identified women and 51 were self-identified men. The results reveal that men’s ideal body perception for a woman is different than women’s expectations for women. For example, women’s perceptions of ideal body for women were focused on features such as lips, nose, eyebrows; whereas the men’s perception of ideal body for women was considered to be a small body type. Similarly, there was also variation of ideal body expectations for men. Although both men and women considered fit body types to be the most ideal body for men, women also reported personal hygiene as being an important factor. Furthermore, the men’s perception focused more on body types rather than other factors such as hygiene. Conclusion: Our results show unique differences in body image perception based on self-identified gender. These results can aid public health professionals in creating targeted body positivity initiatives.

Abstract:
This thesis aims mainly at the representations, through words or images, which college freshmen make of the Internet. This paper has as a basic premise image as a visual representation, be it a drawing or a text, based on authors such as Ave Appiano, Erwin Panofsky, Jacques Aumont, Lorenzo Vilches, W. J. T. Mitchell, among others, who understand image and text as one unit. The research, developed with PUC-Rio students, used a methodological design developed over two successive periods. Firstly, an exploratory study was carried out on the use and the representations of different media, and, in particular, of the Internet, on the part of university students. Secondly, a qualitative investigation was carried out which used as data collecting strategies the focal experimentation groups proposed by Fern and Morgan and interviews. The data obtained through the query applied at the first stage of the investigation enabled eliciting the most frequent representations of the Internet, from a sample of 995 youths, which were used to trigger discussions carried out during the first part of the second stage, that of the focal groups whose members were chosen by intentional sampling. The second part of the group dynamics allowed the obtaining productions such as drawings or collages made by each and every member of the focal groups, representing what youths expect from the Internet. All these representations, expressed through words and/or images, were first analyzed specifically within each set. Based on studies such as those by Derrick de Kerckhove, Lev Manovich, Pier Cesare Rivoltella, Roger Fidler, Sherry Turkle, and Steven Johnson, an analysis was carried out of the crossing of all the empirical data collected; such analysis revolved around some thematic axes: the naturalization of the Internet, its symbolic representation in terms of speed, information, communication, entertainment, globalization, labyrinth and invisibility . The Internet is very present in the daily lives of these youths, which can be verified by the great attunement which they seem to have, besides a critical posture before the Internet, all taken as a unit. Positive and negative aspects of its use, its advantages and disadvantages, its limitations, its usefulness, even its dangers were elicited. This research also verified the evident change of daily school and social habits for these university students, confirming the importance of visual literacy, as defined by Donis Dondis, for this new manner of knowledge construction.

Wright, Tracy L. "Body Image and Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Among University Students." UNF Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/402.

Full text
Abstract:
Children develop beliefs about ideal body image and carry these perceptions into adulthood. Consequences of poor body image may include decreased self-esteem, depression, unhealthy lifestyle, and eating disorders. Understanding healthy lifestyle behaviors and the relationship between body image and these behaviors can empower individuals to engage in behaviors to improve health. Pender’s health promotion model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between body image and healthy lifestyle behaviors among undergraduate university students. An email was sent to undergraduate students, providing a link to the survey that included: demographic, body dissatisfaction, and screen time questions; Prochaska’s physical activity screening measure; and a lifestyle profile by Walker, Sechrist, and Pender. A total of 1056 usable surveys were returned. The majority (71%) were satisfied with their body image, although many (60.3%) wanted to alter it. Most (65.1%) had a normal BMI. Sedentary activity was more than the recommended amount, with only 23.3% meeting physical activity guidelines. Healthy lifestyle behaviors were engaged in “sometimes” and “often, but not routinely.” Body image was correlated with healthy lifestyle behaviors. There was a moderate correlation between activity and body image, and a negative correlation between sedentary activity and healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Abstract:
The current study was conducted in order to examine the impact of ethnicity on gender differences in body type preferences and perceptions and add to the literature examining racial differences in body type preferences and perceptions. The current study was an expansion of one by Gipson et al conducted at a historically Black university in 2004, in which responses and BMI measurements of 191 college students were examined for associations between BMI and gender, and body image and attitudes toward obesity. For the current study the sample of 176 college students enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University, an ethnically diverse institution, completed two body image and attitude inventories and height and weight measurements. The sample consisted of 94 male and 82 female students between the ages of 18 and 25 years (mean=20.3 years, SD=1.9 years). Women rated their current figure as larger than their ideal, whereas men reported no discrepancy. BMI did not vary by sex or grade level. Within race, Black students (mean BMI 27.1 kg/m2) were heavier than Caucasians (23.9 kg/m2). Students generally preferred smaller figures and the students with BMIs 2 preferred the smaller figures more than did students with ≥ 25 kg/m2, however neither BMI, sex nor race favored any specific attitudes towards obesity. The study determined that body image perceptions and attitudes toward obesity vary across racial groups and that the effect of race/ethnicity on body satisfaction depends on gender. The participants may represent a more diverse group than previously tested and provide insight into racial differences.

The content of the thesis is analysing current tools for building a positive image which IBM is trying to make in relationship with students. Related research helped to find out how the company influences students and if the activities of the IBM are effective. Theoretical part analyses the field of University Relations as a piece of Public Relation and connected company image. The next section describes the IBM company, especially the areas which are connected with the main topic of the thesis. The consequent own research discovered how IBM effect on university students, if students know about the possibilities which IBM offer them and which experiences students have with IBM. Based on the results of the research I have made few recommendations for company. The work was elaborated especially for employees of Communication and Marketing department in IBM to show them the possibilites of further improving of the company's image. The thesis may also be profitable for students. It can help them expand their awareness of the possibilities of cooperation with a prestigious company during their studies.

Li, Jianyao. "The effects of country and higher education images in mainland Chinese students' intention to enroll in a offshore program." University of Western Australia. Faculty of Business, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0140.

Full text
Abstract:
Offshore programs have become increasingly popular in countries that are experiencing rapid economic growth and rising demand for higher education. There is no doubt that China is one of the largest markets for offshore programs. However, the offshore program market in China has become increasingly competitive. Currently, institutions from the USA, the UK, and Australia, to name just a few, are offering offshore programs ranging from the professional diploma level to higher degrees such as MA, MBA and PhD. Therefore, understanding how Chinese students select an offshore program is important for competing and surviving in this market place. This study examines the effects of image (i.e., country image and higher education image), attitude, subject norm and perceived behavior control (adopted from Ajzen's theory of planned behavior) in Chinese students' enrollment intentions towards offshore programs from Australia, the UK and the USA respectively. A total number of 1291 valid questionnaires were collected from China for this study. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method was used for data analyses and modeling. This PhD's several major findings have significant theoretical and practical implication. One of the major findings was that country image or its related higher education image doesn't have significant effect on an offshore program evaluation in China. This finding has contradicted most previous studies which suggested that country image had significant impact on whether a consumer purchases the products or brands from a foreign country. The difference between this study and the other country-image studies may be due to the fact that this study studied multiple factors besides country image, while the other studies looked at only the effect of country image on purchasing intention. Although country image or higher education image did not play any significant role in offshore program enrollments, this study found that the image of the partnering or local institution had a significant effect on enrollment intention. Because Chinese students are unfamiliar with a foreign country or their higher education system, they relied heavily on the local institution (e.g., its reputation and quality) to evaluate an offshore program. The findings with respective to image have challenged most previous studies on country image and open a new arena for looking at the effect of country image in behavioral intention. Practically speaking, these findings make universities rethink their offshore program strategies in foreign countries, particularly developing countries. Most university marketers from western countries emphasize on the characteristics of its own (such as the history of the university, the quality of research) when promoting its offshore program overseas. However, this study suggested that the focus should be placed on selecting a good and suitable local partner, as well as emphasizing the characteristics of the local partner. Other major findings were related to the Theory of Planned behavior. This study found that all three components of the TPB, namely, attitude towards the program, subject norm and perceived behavior control had significant effects on enrollment intention. This suggested that for predicting behavioral intention in educational program enrollment, the TPB is a very powerful model.

A descriptive observational study was conducted among undergraduate medical students to determine whether the knowledge of Anatomy influenced their body image perceptions. The perception of some students regarding their body image and appearance was different after the course, and also their view of other peoples' bodies. The findings of the study support the literature that males are more concerned with muscularity and developing muscles, whereas females are more preoccupied with thinness. The study showed that a course in Anatomy might have an influence on students' perceptions of their own and other peoples' physical appearance.

Abstract:
In the past fourteen years, mergers and takeovers have represented a major dimension of corporate identity changes in South African institutions of higher learning. This treatise firstly describes and then explores if students identify themselves with the NMMU corporate identity. Thereafter, it firstly explores and then describes the corporate identity awareness level of NMMU students. Design: An exploratory-descriptive research design was used. The researcher used two types of data. One was secondary data and the other one was primary data. The former were collected by means of an extensive review of the related literature. The latter were obtained by means of surveys. In addition this treatise has referred to The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Brand Strategy (2007) document that was prepared by the brand manager, Karen Coetzee. Findings: The level of brand awareness among students is considered to be low. There is a need to improve the corporate identity awareness level of these strategic stakeholders for the future success of the university. Limitations: This treatise has concentrated on the parent brand (NMMU). Furthermore, the sampling has been limited to students studying at NMMU (Port Elizabeth campuses). Significance: It is important to explore the corporate brand awareness level of the students. It is also essential to discover if students identify themselves with the new NMMU brand.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine whether viewing photos of muscular men or viewing photos of toned men produces greater body dissatisfaction scores for male college students. Prior to receiving the intervention, participants completed a pretest measuring their body satisfaction. The intervention was administered in a group setting and took approximately 30 minutes to administer. After receiving the intervention, participants completed the same assessment measures as the pre-test, but in a post-test form. Results indicate that there was a significant difference between pre-test and posttest body satisfaction ratings for men who viewed muscle photos and mend who viewed toned photos. This study contributes to a growing area of body image and Body Dysmorphic Disorder research in men. It also provides evidence for the benefits of addressing body satisfaction during the treatment of Body Dysmorphic Disorder.
