Gonring, Gabriel Menotti M. P. "Movie/cinema : rearrangements of the apparatus in contemporary movie circulation." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2011. http://research.gold.ac.uk/6604/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how cinema’s specificities are defined in relation to technological developments. I propose that the most appropriate way to do this is by taking the whole cinematographic circuit into account – that is, the complete set of socio-technical operations that are involved in the medium, as remote as they might seem to be from actual cinematographic practices. I depart from the definition of circulation as a socio-technical continuum of the production, distribution, exhibition and evaluation of movies, explaining how these activities might be enacted in three different technological regimes: film, video and digital computation. Then, following an account of the early history of the pirate film society Cine Falcatrua (2003-2005), I show how the specificity of the medium is constituted and preserved throughout its technical progress. Acknowledging the limits of traditional film and screen studies to deal with these questions, I attempt to find an alternative research approach by engaging in practice-based investigation using curatorial strategies. By bringing together and analysing different film and art pieces in an exhibition entitled Denied Distances (2009), I propose a framework that allows an understanding of how media technology are defined in relation to one another, exposing how seemingly expanded practices such as installations and performances might be contained within conventional cinematographic apparatus. I conclude by suggesting that, in order to keep up with the ever-changing nature of the medium, the study of cinema would profit from engaging the extremes of scientific criticism and art practice.

Abstract:
In this study, an online movie recommendation engine that serves on Facebook is developed in order to evaluate social circle eects on user preferences in a trust-based environment. Instead of using single-user profiles in the social environment identification process, virtual group profiles that present common tastes of the social environments, are formed to achieve a successful social circle analysis and innovative suggestions. Recommendations are generated based on similar social circles and based on social circles of similar users separately and their results are evaluated. Pure collaborative filtering is applied to emphasize the influence of social environment characteristics.

Pollack, Alexander Gregory. "Half-virgin." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5010.

Full text
Abstract:
Half-Virgin is a cross-genre collection of essays, short stories, and poems about the humor, pain, and occasional glory of journeying into adulthood but not quite getting there. The works in this collection seek to create a definition of a term, "half-virgin," that I coined in the process of writing this thesis. Among the possibilities explored are: an individual who embarks upon sexual activity for the first time and does not achieve orgasm; an individual who has reached orgasm through consensual sexual activity, but has remained uncertain about what he or she is doing; and the curious sensation of being half-child, half-adult. Ultimately, I believe, a "half-virgin" possesses all of these traits. One of the goals of the collection is to scramble the prototypical coming-of-age story into bits and parts and halves. Among the approaches included are earnest memoir (the real and metaphorical costumes a young couple wears on Halloween), character-driven fiction (the life story of Marlow, a college track star who ends up the unwitting inspiration for Super Mario Brothers), and narrative experiments (a tongue-in-cheek creative writing syllabus and a bullet pointed resume of sexual conquests). By exploring the untidy fragments in love, lust, and human connection in these works, Half-Virgin aspires to find wholeness through the jagged adventures of growing up.

Abstract:

This report describes a Bachelor thesis work in which a robotised laser welding cell has been modelled and simulated for the purpose of making a presentation movie. The report shows that the work has been concentrated on making the movie from the modelling phase through the recording of the movie and ending up with the editing of the final presentation movie. A pre-study was made prior the Bachelor thesis work. In the pre-study a literature study was conducted about measurement and calibration of a welding cell. Measurement of almost all equipment in the entire cell was also conducted in the pre-study. The main result of this pre-study is a thorough investigation of what objects and functions that needs to be modelled in order to explain the functions in the specific laser welding cell The purpose for this Bachelor thesis work is to give an efficient and alternative way to present a laser welding cell that resides in Production Technology Centre (PTC) at Innovatum, Trollhättan Sweden. The movie can be used outside PTC or if the laser welding cell is occupied with work, since it is not allowed to be inside the cell when in progress. The result of this work is a nearly 12 minute long presentation movie which shows all predefined elements of the cell together with a real welding sequence with metal deposition (MD).

Abstract:
A recommender system is a tool for recommending personalized content for users based on previous behaviour. This thesis examines the impact of considering item and user bias in matrix factorization for implementing recommender systems. Previous work have shown that user bias have an impact on the predicting power of a recommender system. In this study two different implementations of matrix factorization using stochastic gradient descent are applied to the MovieLens 10M dataset to extract latent features, one of which takes movie and user bias into consideration. The algorithms performed similarly when looking at the prediction capabilities. When examining the features extracted from the two algorithms there was a strong correlation between extracted features and movie genres. We show that each feature form a distinct category of movies where each movie is represented as a combination of the categories. We also show how features can be used to recommend similar movies.

This project aims to investigate the possibility of training a chatbot in using movie dialogue in generating the response. Movie dialogue can be found in both movie scripts as well as subtitles, though using subtitles is much easier as they follow a special formatting. Using one subtitle as a response to each word found in the preceding subtitle, the implemented chatbot links together subtitles. The responses are stored in a frequency distribution table that maps each word to all responses found. Though the responses generated by the chatbot were not desirable, the responsese tmost often contained responses which would be more fitting.

Abstract:
Many services provide recommendations for their users in order for them to easily find relevant information. Thus, the development of recommender systems is important for these services to constantly improve. With the integration of new technology, it is common to implement recommender systems with the use of machine learning algorithms. This report investigates a method for recommender systems based on the machine learning algorithm K-nearest neighbors, or KNN. Specifically, the algorithm was used to predict what users’ would rate movies before they had rated them. In addition, the method was compared with the use of a baseline method taking the mean value of all user ratings as predictions. The objective of this study was to analyze the usefulness of KNN. The conclusion was that the implementation of a movie recommender system based on KNN received better results than using a baseline method.

Vaughan, Nicola. "From buddy movie to bromance." Thesis, Brunel University, 2015. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/12116.

Full text
Abstract:
As well as critiquing my own abilities throughout the writing process, the essay aims to explore and examine the various models of friendship between central male protagonists and the evolution of masculinity and homosociality within the buddy movie/bromance genre which has been a staple of the American film industry since the before the 1950s. In addition, I will note if these on-screen relationships have been the product of social change and wide spread acceptance of an evolving idea of what constitutes ‘masculinity’ and if, in turn, these new boundaries of homosociality have been, in any way genre changing. Alongside this essay I intend to create a piece of creative writing within the bromance comedy genre set against the backdrop of Montclair New Jersey in present day which explores the difficulties and solidarities of friendship between five old college friends. This film intends to fit in with contemporary bromance and appeal to the market demographic of 18 – 35 males by conforming to accepted and expected aspects of the genre such as, friendship, exploration, crisis, discovery and, most importantly, comedy.

Abstract:
Recommender systems are becoming a large and important market, with commerce moving to the internet and the ability to keep a larger stock of products, one of the biggest hurdles is to organize and show the right product to the right customer. Recommender systems aim at tailoring their products based on their customer need, by predicting how much a user would like a particular product. The recommender systems implemented in this project are within Collaborative filtering (CF) and Content-based filtering (CBF), with a final hybrid system based on combining the systems of CF and CBF. The aim is to evaluate how features such as number of latent factors, regularization factor and learning rate affect prediction accuracy for CF using Matrix factorization and compare the Root-mean square error (RMSE) for the three different systems.Collaborative filtering using matrix factorization resulted in lower RMSE than CBF and the largest factor in lowering error was learning rate. The results did indicate that CBF might perform better than CF when the user-base is small, while also having possibility of somewhat different functionality by recommending products which themselves are similar. The Hybrid recommender system had the lowest RMSE but with insignificant improvements from that of the CF method.

Gorinski, Philip John. "Automatic movie analysis and summarisation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31053.

Full text
Abstract:
Automatic movie analysis is the task of employing Machine Learning methods to the field of screenplays, movie scripts, and motion pictures to facilitate or enable various tasks throughout the entirety of a movie’s life-cycle. From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its originality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both. Within this field of automatic movie analysis, this thesis addresses the task of summarising the content of screenplays, enabling users at any stage to gain a broad understanding of a movie from greatly reduced data. The contributions of this thesis are four-fold: (i)We introduce ScriptBase, a new large-scale data set of original movie scripts, annotated with additional meta-information such as genre and plot tags, cast information, and log- and tag-lines. To our knowledge, Script- Base is the largest data set of its kind, containing scripts and information for almost 1,000 Hollywood movies. (ii) We present a dynamic summarisation model for the screenplay domain, which allows for extraction of highly informative and important scenes from movie scripts. The extracted summaries allow for the content of the original script to stay largely intact and provide the user with its important parts, while greatly reducing the script-reading time. (iii) We extend our summarisation model to capture additional modalities beyond the screenplay text. The model is rendered multi-modal by introducing visual information obtained from the actual movie and by extracting scenes from the movie, allowing users to generate visual summaries of motion pictures. (iv) We devise a novel end-to-end neural network model for generating natural language screenplay overviews. This model enables the user to generate short descriptive and informative texts that capture certain aspects of a movie script, such as its genres, approximate content, or style, allowing them to gain a fast, high-level understanding of the screenplay. Multiple automatic and human evaluations were carried out to assess the performance of our models, demonstrating that they are well-suited for the tasks set out in this thesis, outperforming strong baselines. Furthermore, the ScriptBase data set has started to gain traction, and is currently used by a number of other researchers in the field to tackle various tasks relating to screenplays and their analysis.

The essay touches upon the topic of identity within dizygotic twins. The complexity of how the twins see themselves. There is a shared identity and there is a united identity. This paper touches upon the topic to be able to give teachers awareness of an identity problem that dizygotic twins may have; in hope of being able to accurately help students develop in the best way possible. The essay question is what is the relation between religion and the creating of a dizygotic twins identity?Female dizygotic twins and a researcher in genetics was interviewed to be able to give results from an inside perspective as well as an outer perspective. This qualitative study used the snowball effect method and gave results of dizygotic twins feeling different about their identity relation depending on how old they presently were. The subjects found that society were responsible for creating their shared twin identity. Just as preconceived notions label and group people, dizygotic twins are no different, and therefore also forced into having to battle with these notions.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on some of the most significant and least understood aspects of the life of London publisher Henry Colburn (c.1784-1855). Its purposes are to correct the misinformation currently in circulation, to introduce new information, and to reassess Colburn‘s reputation and accomplishments in light of this evidence. The thesis first examines the errors and limitations of previous appraisals of Colburn and how various primary sources can be used to correct and augment them. It next considers Colburn‘s early years before surveying his periodical publications and his controversial publicity methods. The thesis briefly recounts Colburn‘s involvement with the ‘silver-fork’ school of fiction and then examines in greater depth his relationships with writer Benjamin Disraeli and one-time business partner Richard Bentley. Colburn‘s two marriages are also studied as the focus of the thesis moves onto the latter half of his career, his retirement, and his death. The final chapter tenders some general conclusions based on the foregoing matter and suggests further avenues of study concerning Colburn, his role in the history of publishing, and his place in the traditional paradigms of Romantic and Victorian literary culture.

Abstract:
This Master of Arts project in Creative Writing was submitted to the School of Creative Media at Royal Melbourne University of Technology. It contains a full length feature screenplay for an un-produced road movie entitled Free Radicals. It is primarily a dark love story between the drug-addicted rent boy Roman and the budding actor, the protagonist Jonathan. It is however written in a conventional structure familiar to Hollywood professionals, and a good deal of humour is used to attract interest in the story. The storyline itself is more familiar to the audience of road movies and independent features in the US or European Art House ventures. The exegesis explores the history and the conventions of the road movie genre, in addition to the established and not often debated conventions of screenwriting theory. The thesis attempts to show how these theories were applied to the screenplay and how they influenced the process of writing it within an academic and commercial context. The MA project shows how different expectations may create a conflict in the personal writing process and inspire a product that makes compromises. The reason for reading this project may not only be the product itself but also the insight it offers into a screenwriting profession where it is often important to meet expectations.

Abstract:
User written movie reviews carry substantial amounts of movie related features such as description of location, time period, genres, characters, etc. Using natural language processing and topic modeling based techniques, it is possible to extract features from movie reviews and find movies with similar features. In this thesis, a feature extraction method is presented and the use of the extracted features in finding similar movies is investigated. We do the text pre-processing on a collection of movie reviews. We then extract topics from the collection using topic modeling techniques and store the topic distribution for each movie. Similarity metrics such as Hellinger distance is then used to find movies with similar topic distribution. Furthermore, the extracted topics are used as an explanation during subjective evaluation. Experimental results show that our extracted topics represent useful movie features and that they can be used to find similar movies efficiently.

An experimental study was carried out on the ability to create a three-dimensional holographic movie. Holograms were written on VRP-M emulsion film with the green line of an Argon-Ion laser. The type of hologram write setup favored was a reflection hologram, due to its artistic capabilities. The illusion of a floating image is much better produced by reflection holograms as opposed to transmission holograms. However, due to the thinness of the film, white light readout was not possible, and the reading setup included the original writing laser. Although successful holograms were written on sheets with same emulsion as the final roll film, the final product on the roll of film did not result as expected due to a failure in the development process. This paper will describe the setup that I created, discuss the aspects of the process that turned out well and suggest improvements to achieve a successful experiment in the future.

Abstract:
Using a close textual and contextual analysis, I trace themes of gender and race in the Matrix trilogy, arguing for the presence of a parallel, embedded filmic narrative, one that neatly aligns with African-American critical traditions affirming subjugated ideologies, knowledges, communities and forms. Decoding the films through the lenses of race, womanist, film studies and cultural studies theories, I explore this signified, covert storyline through phenotypes, casting choices, plot twists, and extra filmic events. In this dissertation project, I argue that their preponderance, consistency, and coherence are evidence of deliberate commentary. I further claim that that the trilogy can be reasonably understood as a historically motivated critique of Whiteness and White supremacy, offering references to American slavery and ideologies, as well as to cross-racial ideological domination and collective, coalitional and revolutionary change. Since long standing racial and gender understandings (along with their attendant domination and oppression) persist, examining popular films with transformed constructions is useful in supporting frameworks for conceptual change.

The evolution of the World Wide Web has resulted in extremely large amounts of information. As a consequence, users are faced with the problem of information overload: they have difficulty in identifying and selecting items of interest to them, such as books, movies, blogs, bookmarks, etc. Recommender systems can be used to address the information over-load problem by suggesting potentially interesting or useful items to users. Many existing recommender systems rely on the collaborative filtering technology. Among other domains, collaborative filtering systems have been widely used in e-commerce and they have proven to be very successful. However, in recent years the number of users and items available in e-commerce has grown tremendously, challenging recommender systems with scalability issues. To address such issues, we use canopy/clustering techniques and Hadoop MapReduce distributed framework to implement user-based and item-based recommender systems. We evaluate our implementations in the context of movie recommendation. Generally, standard rating prediction schemes work by identifying similar users/items. We propose a novel rating prediction scheme, which makes use of dissimilar users/items, in addition to the similar ones, and experimentally show that the new prediction scheme produces better results than the standard prediction scheme. Finally, we engineer two new approaches for clustering-based collaborative filtering that can make use of movie synopsis and user information. Specifically, in the first approach, we perform user-based clustering using movie synopsis, together with user demographic data. In the second approach, we perform item-based clustering using movie synopsis, together with user quotes about movies. Experimental results show that the movie synopsis and user demographic data can be effectively used to improve the rating predictions made by a recommender system. However, user quotes are too vague and do not produce better predictions.

South Tyrol, which is situated on the border between Austria and Italy, has been considered a 'peace model' by many nation-states since the creation of the province's autonomy statutes. The objective of these statutes was to allow for minority protection of the German- and Ladin-speaking communities while also permitting Austria to be the 'protector' of South Tyrol even though the province is situated in Italy. Another bi-product of these statutes was the creation of the 'separate but equal' education system, which allowed the German-, Italian- and Ladin-speaking communities to have individual schools in order to protect their culture and language identity. In the past several decades, there has been an increase in 'mixed' marriages with members of differing language groups producing bilingual children. Additionally, civil service positions now require that all applicants have a mandatory comprehension of the L2, or in some cases L3, in order to apply for certain posts. As the education system tries to adjust to local concerns regarding the insufficient teaching of the L2 in monolingual education, the concept of South Tyrol as a 'peace model' is brought into question. In this thesis, I examine how the South Tyrolean school system is reflective of society at large as its divided education mirrors the current fissures existent amongst the language communities. With parents looking for alternative measures to instruct their children in the L2, some residents would prefer a bilingual schooling option to encourage inter-group assimilation. Furthermore, I discuss, outside of education, external social factors in the region which impact L2 learning creating language learning 'blocks' and 'victim' versus 'conqueror' mentalities. The objective of this research is to try and understand how South Tyrol continues to be in transition as the province adjusts to more bilingualism despite the historical need to preserve the language minorities.

Abstract:

The picture a company sends out is important. Corporate identity, corporate image and the corporate communication are three concepts linked together. The purpose with this dissertation was to examine a corporate movie done by Ifö, a company producing bath and toilet equipment, by looking at its identity, image and communication. A deductive approached was used and in the theoretical framework an introduction regarding marketing was first presented. Further different theories and models were discussed with focus on the Operational model by Gray & Balmer and also the spiderweb developed by Bernstein. This model was also modified to give a clear picture of how Ifö is perceived.

In the beginning of the dissertation an interview was done with the marketing director at Ifö, which was a base for the questionnaire survey. This was distributed to investigate the perception of Ifö from its stakeholders. Different attributes were decided to represent the corporate identity of the company Ifö. The result showed that the stakeholders in general perceived Ifö in the same way as Ifö wanted them to do except in some attributes where Ifö has sent out a more confused picture.

Abstract:
The tremendous growth of Web has made information overload problem increasingly serious. Users are often confused by huge amount of information available on the internet and they are faced with the problem of finding the most relevant information that meets their needs. Recommender systems have proven to be an important solution approach to this problem. This thesis will present OPENMORE, a movie recommendation system, which is primarily based on content-based filtering technique. The distinctive point of this study lies in the methodology used to construct and update user and item profiles and the optimizations used to fine-tune the constructed user models. The proposed system arranges movie content data as features of a set of dimension slots, where each feature is assigned a stable feature weight regardless of individual movies. These feature weights and the explicit feedbacks provided by the user are then used to construct the user profile, which is fine-tuned through a set of optimization mechanisms. Users are enabled to view their profile, update them and create multiple contexts where they can provide negative and positive feedback for the movies on the feature level.

Abstract:
Recommender System is a tool helping users find content and overcome information overload. It predicts interests of users and makes recommendation according to the interest model of users. The original content-based recommender system is the continuation and development of collaborative filtering, which doesn’t need the user’s evaluation for items. Instead, the similarity is calculated based on the information of items that are chose by users, and then make the recommendation accordingly. With the improvement of machine learning, current content-based recommender system can build profile for users and products respectively. Building or updating the profile according to the analysis of items that are bought or visited by users. The system can compare the user and the profile of items and then recommend the most similar products. So this recommender method that compare user and product directly cannot be brought into collaborative filtering model. The foundation of content-based algorithm is acquisition and quantitative analysis of the content. As the research of acquisition and filtering of text information are mature, many current content-based recommender systems make recommendation according to the analysis of text information. This paper introduces content-based recommender system for the movie website of VionLabs. There are a lot of features extracted from the movie, they are diversity and unique, which is also the difference from other recommender systems. We use these features to construct movie model and calculate similarity. We introduce a new approach for setting weight of features, which improves the representative of movies. Finally we evaluate the approach to illustrate the improvement.

Abstract:
The area of creating predictive models using machine learning has increased in size in recent years. The market for movies is still big with hundreds of new movies created every year. The purpose of this report is to investigate whether it is possible to classify movie rating and box office revenue with metadata available before release. This was done by building a classification model with metadata obtained from the internet such as, budget and what actors are involved, etc. This study managed to correctly predict what rating a movie would have about 82% of the time using the technique with the highest success rate. The times as a model failed to predict the correct rating, it was usually by one rating group, corresponding to a deviation of approximately 17%. When a prediction of gross sales was made, it gave a positive result of 15% of the time. The results of this report are to a certain extent consistent with previous studies with similar focus in the prediction of the grade. The precision of the predictions can further be increased with a larger data set with more features.

Abstract:
Over the past half century, theorists have grappled with the issue that spectators engage with, and are emotionally affected by, fiction. In particular, film fiction has aroused interest because of the strength of emotional response. Traditional thinking about film accepted that illusion was a component of a spectator’s experience of film. However, contemporary theory has veered significantly from this and assumed that the spectator is always aware of the fictional nature of the content. In this thesis I argue that certain horror movies do, in fact, lead to an experience that is best characterized and understood in terms of illusion. Analysing key theories that attempt to explain an audience’s emotional responses to fiction, I aim to demonstrate that popular non-illusionistic theories fail to acknowledge both sides of the filmatic relationship (the spectator and the film) and have mistakenly attempted to provide an explanation for all emotional responses across media. A more refined approach is needed, both to emotion and the medium through which it is evoked. Thus, I incorporate an empirical analytical method in my philosophical project, analysing a number of paradigm horror movies and drivers of film spectatorship, to demonstrate how conditions for illusion are present. I also place emphasis on the phenomenological account of the spectator. My thesis offers an account of a type of horror movie experience that considers both the causal and conceptual issues of emotionally responding to film fiction. This explanation also offers a solution to the paradox of fiction but one that is not required to accord with those that attempt to explain other emotions evoked by works of art.

Abstract:
Sentiment analysis aims at figuring out the opinions of the users towards a certain service or product. In this research, the aim is at classifying the sentiments of users based on the comments they have posed on Douban movie website. In this thesis, I try two different ways to classify the sentiments: with the first one classifying comments into five classes of ratings from 1 to 5, and with the second one classifying comments into three classes of ratings: negative, neutral and positive. For the latter, the ratings of 1 and 2 are grouped as negative, the ratings of 3 neutral and the ratings of 4 and 5 positive. First, Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) is used as the feature extraction technique for machine learning algorithms. Chi Square and Mutual Information are used for feature selection. The selected features are fed into different machine learning methods: Logistic Regression, Linear SVC, SGD classifier and Multinomial Naive Bayes. The performance of models with feature selection will be compared with the performance of models without feature selection for 5-class classification as well as 3-class classification. Also, fastText and Skip-Gram are used as embedding methods for deep learning algorithms LSTM and BILSTM. FastText will also be used for both embedding as well as being a classifier. The aim is to compare different machine learning and deep learning algorithms using different vectorization methods to see which model performs the best regarding both 5-class and 3-class classification. The two classification strategies will be compared with each other in terms of error analysis. The aim is to figure out the similarities and differences of misclassifications made by two different classification strategies.

Abstract:
Recommender systems are a crucial part of navigating the vast number of products on the internet. Social media, in the form of Twitter microblogs, has been previously used to produce movie recommendations, yet this has mainly been to solve cold-start, a common problem in collaborative filtering environments. This work addresses how top-k recommendations in a collaborative filtering environment are affected when augmented with social media data. To answer this question a novel prototype is developed following a design science process model. This system re-ranks top-k recommendations based on a social matching process where Tweets are matched with movie keywords through latent semantic indexing (LSI) similarity. The prototype is evaluated through experiments regarding functionality, accuracy, consistency, and performance. The results show that NDCG and MAP metrics of the top-k recommendations improve with social matching compared to only using the collaborative filtering algorithms.

Abstract:
Online reviewing websites help users decide what to buy or places to go. These platforms allow users to express their opinions using numerical ratings as well as textual comments. The numerical ratings give a coarse idea of the service. On the other hand, textual comments give full details which is tedious for users to read. In this dissertation, we develop novel methods and algorithms to generate personalized, aspect-based summaries of movie reviews for a given user. The first problem we tackle is extracting a set of related words to an aspect from movie reviews. Our evaluation shows that our method is able to extract even unpopular terms that represent an aspect, such as compound terms or abbreviations, as opposed to the methods from the related work. We then study the problem of annotating sentences with aspects, and propose a new method that annotates sentences based on a similarity between the aspect signature and the terms in the sentence. The third problem we tackle is the generation of personalized, aspect-based summaries. We propose an optimization algorithm to maximize the coverage of the aspects the user is interested in and the representativeness of sentences in the summary subject to a length and similarity constraints. Finally, we perform three user studies that show that the approach we propose outperforms the state of art method for generating summaries

Since a long time age, word-of-mouth has always been an important way for people to exchange opinions and information. With the rising of the internet, electronic word-of-mouth(eWOM) shows up and gradually replaces traditional wordof-mouth. People tend to search for others’ experiences and sharing online in order to help them make purchase decisions or at least have a better idea of what they are intended to buy, especially for virtual products or services. Therefore, in this study, we would like to know more about the influence of eWOM to people’s intention of watching movies. Here, we discuss two dimensions of the movie review, which are the source(stranger or acquaintance) and the content feature(concrete or abstract). To do the study, we used a 2 X 2 between-subject design and gave out internet questionnaires to the mass population who are 18 to 50 years old in Taiwan. By using statistical analysis software SPSS 22, we conducted Reliability Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, Independent-Sample T Test and Regression Analysis with a valid sample size of 313. Our research results support our hypothesis that if the source is from an acquaintance and the content feature is concrete, people will have the most intention to watch the movie. In addition, acting abilities of the cast and people’s preference of movie genre will also stronger the positive influence on it.

The objective of this thesis is to construct object movie with moving objects. In past researches, in order to allow the viewer to observe an object from any angle in a film, one had to utilize some expansive equipments in a special designed room. This thesis proposes to achieve the same goal with off-the-shelves equipments. The proposed method can be divided into two steps: the preprocessing and interpolation. In preprocessing step, first we capture image sequences from many different view angles, and store them with time relation in a special format called Multi-View Video. Then we extract feature points using SUSAN corner detection in each image, and design corresponding points algorithm to locate the corresponding feature points between each image pairs. Finally we use Delaunay Triangulation to produce a triangle mesh that is stored in an information file. In interpolation step, we use two files made in preprocessing (Multi-View Video and information file) and a technology similar to View Morphing to produce a virtual image sequence for an arbitrary viewpoint and view angle on real-time. In most traditional morphing methods, one creates virtual-viewpoint images by specifying reference points or reference lines manually. In our proposed method, however, virtual image sequence can be created automatically between any two existing image sequences.
