Abstract:
This study was about effects of aggressive movies on children’s aggressive behaviour. Forty (40) pupils were randomly selected from Korle Abansoro Primary School, Koforidua, Eastern Ghana, to participate in the study. An adapted version of peer nomination instrument for aggression designed by Crick & Grotpeter in 1995 was used to acquire the data. Half the participants watched an aggressive movie while the other half watched non-aggressive movie for thirty minutes each after which the participants were assessed using the aggressive behavioral checklist or scale. The independent ‘t’ test was used to analyze the results. Two of the hypotheses were confirmed while the other two were rejected. This indicated that children who watched an aggressive movie exhibited more aggressive behavior than children who watched non-aggressive movie and males were not more aggressive than females. Two of the findings were consistent with previous findings. The implication of these results was discussed.

Abstract:
The number of comments/reviews for movies is enormous and cannot be processed manually. Therefore, machine learning techniques are used to efficiently process the user’s opinion. This research work proposes a deep neural network with seven layers for movie reviews’ sentiment analysis. The model consists of an input layer called the embedding layer, which represents the dataset as a sequence of numbers called vectors, and two consecutive layers of 1D-CNN (one-dimensional convolutional neural network) for extracting features. A global max-pooling layer is used to reduce dimensions. A dense layer for classification and a dropout layer are also used to reduce overfitting and improve generalization error in the neural network. A fully connected layer is the last layer to predict between two classes. Two movie review datasets are used and widely accepted by the research community. The first dataset contains 25,000 samples, half positive and half negative, whereas the second dataset contains 50,000 specimens of movie reviews. Our neural network model performs sentiment classification among positive and negative movie reviews called binary classification. The model achieves 92% accuracy on both datasets, which is more efficient than traditional machine learning models.

Abstract:
The genre of animated posters emerged at the dawn of animation. In 1899, A. Cooper an English director created one of the first movie-posters in the history of world animation. The need for movie-posters with propaganda characteristics arose during the period of the WW1. During that time, the genre of the animated poster had been developed and had even become a stimulus to the development of the animation and film industry. It had achieved its greatest success in the UK due to the advanced level of printed graphics, as well as the fact that the British pioneered the development of systematic promotion approaches. German animators also worked in the genre of animated posters, but they filmed mostly instructional movies which presented technical or military information in a clear and simple form. By the end of the WW1 the structure of movie posters had evolved from transparent to narrative. During the war the genre of the animated poster was not developed in Russia. After the war, propaganda film-posters disappeared from the screens. Their place was taken by mostly political, educational and promotional posters. The time of experimentation with figurative language, technology, and structure of the animated poster was in 1920-1930s. Themes, targets and the form of presentation had changed, but the function remained the same - informational and visual propaganda. As the commercial poster had developed predominantly in European and American animation, the release of political posters initiated the development of Soviet animation. Sentiment changes in global politics and the situation in Europe during the late 1930s which evolved into the WW2, once again stimulated the entertainers interest for the genres of political-propaganda, patriotic, and instructive posters. During the war the production of animated posters formed a considerable portion of all the animation filmed in Soviet as well as American studios. With the cessation of hostilities films in the poster animation genre almost disappeared from the screens.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the use of speech act and its possible purpose performed by two main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in the Zootopia movie. Qualitative method was utilized to explain the function of speech act performed by the characters. Searle’s theory is used as the main theory to answer the two problems formulation regarding speech act classifications and their purposes of using speech act. The research result showed that all of the speech acts was used by Hopps. On the other hand, Wilde used just half of the speech act classification, namely directive, expressive, and commissive. Meanwhile, her purposes of using speech acts are to tell what she believed (assertives), to ask someone to do (directives), to express the feeling (expressive), to promise (commissives), and to bring a change (declarations).

Abstract:
This study analyzed face threatening acts (FTAs) used by the main character in the movie titled The Half of It, focusing on (i) the types of the FTAs and (ii) how the FTAs are used by the main character. The data came from all utterances (words, phrases, clauses, sentences) produced by the main character. A pragmatic theory of FTAs from Brown and Levinson was applied to analyze the data qualitatively. Four types of FTAs are found in this study. The first type is “threatening the hearer’s negative face”, which was embedded in specific acts used by the main character, namely Suggestion, Threat, Reminding, Order, Warning, and Compliment. The second type is, “threatening the speaker’s negative face”, which is followed by such acts as Response to the hearer’s faux pas, Excuses, and Acceptance of offers. The third type is, “threatening the hearer’s positive face” with the acts of Criticism, Insults, Disagreement, Ridicule, Reprimand, Disapproval, Irreverence, Complaints, and Accusations. The last type of the FTAs is “threatening the speaker’s positive face” by using Confession, Emotion leakage, Physical control over the body, Apology, and Acting stupid. Finally, the FTAs enacted in the utterances of the main character are minimized by means of applying the politeness strategies. It has been discovered that the main character used the four types of politeness strategy that were positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off-record strategy.

Abstract:
Apology is an inevitable part of human communication as an act of face-saving strategy. It is necessarily uttered if an offense is made. This research is an attempt to reveal the apology strategies used as well as to analyze the influence of social distance and relative power to the realization of apology strategies, as seen in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2. In total, there are 125 data found and those are classified according the apology strategy employed. The result shows that the majority of the speakers employ indirect apology strategy ‘Explanation or Account of Cause’ to apologize. Furthermore, this research also found that social distance and relative power are taken into account during the apology process and they affect the linguistic realization of apology strategies in the movies.

Abstract:
Abstract Considerable research from high-income countries has characterized the amount, nature and effects of movie smoking depiction. However, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases are growing, little research has investigated smoking imagery in movies. This study examined the extent and nature of smoking portrayal in locally produced Ethiopian movies, and estimated the number of tobacco impressions movies delivered. Sample movies were taken from YouTube. Keyword searches were conducted using ‘Ethiopian movies’ and ‘Ethiopian drama’ on 18 September 2016. In each search, the first 100 most viewed movies were examined. Excluding repeated results, a total of 123 movies were selected for content analysis. Three coders participated. Results indicated that 86 (69.9%, 95% CI 63–78%) of the 123 most viewed movies contain at least one tobacco incident (TI). The movies depict a total of 403 TIs, with an average of 4.7 (95% CI 3.7–5.6) TIs in each movie. The average length of TIs is 1 min and 11 s. On average, the movies were viewed more than half a million times by September 2016, and received more ‘likes’ than ‘dislikes’, z = −8.05, p = 0.00. They delivered over 194 million tobacco impressions via YouTube alone from July 2012 through September 2016. Most TIs portray smoking as a socially acceptable behavior with no negative health consequences. The findings suggest that as with transnational Western movies, locally produced movies in LMICs should be scrutinized for compliance with national and international regulatory efforts.

Abstract:
Recommendation systems based on convolutional neural network (CNN) have attracted great attention due to their effectiveness in processing unstructured data such as images or audio. However, a huge amount of raw data produced by data crawling and digital transformation is structured, which makes it difficult to utilize the advantages of CNN. This paper introduces a novel autoencoder, named Half Convolutional Autoencoder, which adopts convolutional layers to discover the high-order correlation between structured features in the form of Tag Genome, the side information associated with each movie in the MovieLens 20 M dataset, in order to generate a robust feature vector. Subsequently, these new movie representations, along with the introduction of users’ characteristics generated via Tag Genome and their past transactions, are applied into well-known matrix factorization models to resolve the initialization problem and enhance the predicting results. This method not only outperforms traditional matrix factorization techniques by at least 5.35% in terms of accuracy but also stabilizes the training process and guarantees faster convergence.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how cinema’s specificities are defined in relation to technological developments. I propose that the most appropriate way to do this is by taking the whole cinematographic circuit into account – that is, the complete set of socio-technical operations that are involved in the medium, as remote as they might seem to be from actual cinematographic practices. I depart from the definition of circulation as a socio-technical continuum of the production, distribution, exhibition and evaluation of movies, explaining how these activities might be enacted in three different technological regimes: film, video and digital computation. Then, following an account of the early history of the pirate film society Cine Falcatrua (2003-2005), I show how the specificity of the medium is constituted and preserved throughout its technical progress. Acknowledging the limits of traditional film and screen studies to deal with these questions, I attempt to find an alternative research approach by engaging in practice-based investigation using curatorial strategies. By bringing together and analysing different film and art pieces in an exhibition entitled Denied Distances (2009), I propose a framework that allows an understanding of how media technology are defined in relation to one another, exposing how seemingly expanded practices such as installations and performances might be contained within conventional cinematographic apparatus. I conclude by suggesting that, in order to keep up with the ever-changing nature of the medium, the study of cinema would profit from engaging the extremes of scientific criticism and art practice.

In this study, an online movie recommendation engine that serves on Facebook is developed in order to evaluate social circle eects on user preferences in a trust-based environment. Instead of using single-user profiles in the social environment identification process, virtual group profiles that present common tastes of the social environments, are formed to achieve a successful social circle analysis and innovative suggestions. Recommendations are generated based on similar social circles and based on social circles of similar users separately and their results are evaluated. Pure collaborative filtering is applied to emphasize the influence of social environment characteristics.

Pollack, Alexander Gregory. "Half-virgin." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5010.

Full text
Abstract:
Half-Virgin is a cross-genre collection of essays, short stories, and poems about the humor, pain, and occasional glory of journeying into adulthood but not quite getting there. The works in this collection seek to create a definition of a term, "half-virgin," that I coined in the process of writing this thesis. Among the possibilities explored are: an individual who embarks upon sexual activity for the first time and does not achieve orgasm; an individual who has reached orgasm through consensual sexual activity, but has remained uncertain about what he or she is doing; and the curious sensation of being half-child, half-adult. Ultimately, I believe, a "half-virgin" possesses all of these traits. One of the goals of the collection is to scramble the prototypical coming-of-age story into bits and parts and halves. Among the approaches included are earnest memoir (the real and metaphorical costumes a young couple wears on Halloween), character-driven fiction (the life story of Marlow, a college track star who ends up the unwitting inspiration for Super Mario Brothers), and narrative experiments (a tongue-in-cheek creative writing syllabus and a bullet pointed resume of sexual conquests). By exploring the untidy fragments in love, lust, and human connection in these works, Half-Virgin aspires to find wholeness through the jagged adventures of growing up.

Abstract:

This report describes a Bachelor thesis work in which a robotised laser welding cell has been modelled and simulated for the purpose of making a presentation movie. The report shows that the work has been concentrated on making the movie from the modelling phase through the recording of the movie and ending up with the editing of the final presentation movie. A pre-study was made prior the Bachelor thesis work. In the pre-study a literature study was conducted about measurement and calibration of a welding cell. Measurement of almost all equipment in the entire cell was also conducted in the pre-study. The main result of this pre-study is a thorough investigation of what objects and functions that needs to be modelled in order to explain the functions in the specific laser welding cell The purpose for this Bachelor thesis work is to give an efficient and alternative way to present a laser welding cell that resides in Production Technology Centre (PTC) at Innovatum, Trollhättan Sweden. The movie can be used outside PTC or if the laser welding cell is occupied with work, since it is not allowed to be inside the cell when in progress. The result of this work is a nearly 12 minute long presentation movie which shows all predefined elements of the cell together with a real welding sequence with metal deposition (MD).

Abstract:
A recommender system is a tool for recommending personalized content for users based on previous behaviour. This thesis examines the impact of considering item and user bias in matrix factorization for implementing recommender systems. Previous work have shown that user bias have an impact on the predicting power of a recommender system. In this study two different implementations of matrix factorization using stochastic gradient descent are applied to the MovieLens 10M dataset to extract latent features, one of which takes movie and user bias into consideration. The algorithms performed similarly when looking at the prediction capabilities. When examining the features extracted from the two algorithms there was a strong correlation between extracted features and movie genres. We show that each feature form a distinct category of movies where each movie is represented as a combination of the categories. We also show how features can be used to recommend similar movies.

Abstract:
Covid-19, a disease that transformed into a pandemic at the beginning of 2020, caused catastrophic results in the world and Turkey. There have been some restrictions on trade, education, tourism, and art. Daily life was not interrupted but some services and events that they have not primary functions (for some people) like “art” were on the verge of stopping and carried to the digital platforms. In this context, some corporations opened their archives and sometimes actual events to the public free of charge or for a certain amount of money. Art, which has always had “healing”, “mediating” and “unifying” effects, was consumed by the billions of people through digital devices. Considering art is both a sector and an industry, the unexpected phenomenon of Covid-19, which is a kind of crisis that occurs one in a hundred years and takes longer than expected, led to the temporary or permanent closure of some art and culture institutions. Due to these results, some supportive programs have been organized by official or non-official institutions to solve financial problems. In Turkey, all the movie theaters closed down on the 16th of March 2020 by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Some halls opened in July and August, however, because of lack of audience and of the increasing number of patients they have closed down again in November. 2019 was a bad year for the sector yet 2020 was even worse with the decline of the audience by the ratio of %90. Before the pandemic, there were some problems in terms of halls. In this context, some movie theaters tried to find solutions not to lose the audience and find financial support. Beyoğlu Movie Theater that began operating in 1989, had some financial problems before the pandemic. The managers of the hall created a project called “Beyoğlu 1989”, which was a kind of electronic bulletin, and started sending e-mails to the subscribers. This project, which was implemented for the first time in Turkey, has reached the 57th issue and 800 subscribers today and has turned into a kind of weekly electronic-digital cinema newspaper that is also promoted on the Instagram account of the Beyoğlu cinema with 45 thousand followers. The broadcast also follows the cinema agenda and undertakes the task of a written-visual archive. In conclusion, a movie theater that started operating in the analog age, today use all the possibilities and utilities of the digital age and also with the help of its owners and followers, creates a communication ecology to prevent the shutdown. The aim of this article is to examine an electronic bulletin (also a film magazine) “1989”, which is first in Turkey, with the qualitative method.

In ASME-JSME-KSME 2019 8th Joint Fluids Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ajkfluids2019-4908.

Abstract:
Abstract We developed a high-efficiency half-ducted propeller fan to reduce the electric power consumption of the outdoor unit of air conditioner by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Total pressure loss coefficient on the cylindrical surface of blade tip started increasing at the middle of the blade, and the region of high total pressure loss coefficient was formed after trailing edge. Therefore, we assumed that decreasing this region helped increasing static pressure efficiency. Limiting stream lines on the pressure surface showed that the flow from leading edge leaked at the middle of the blade tip, so it was assumed that the region of the high total pressure loss coefficient arose from the leakage at the middle of the blade tip. We confirmed that static pressure at the middle of blade tip, which was the leakage point, was low. We assumed that low inward force to the flow caused the leakage. On the other hand, static pressure at trailing edge of the blade tip was high. Therefore, it was found that the inward force could be increased by making the static pressure higher at the meddle of the blade tip. In order to make the static pressure higher at the middle of the blade tip, we attempted to move the maximum camber position of the blade tip from trailing edge side to leading edge side. Calculation results showed leakage at the blade tip decreased and the static pressure efficiency increased by 0.5%. Experimental results showed that the static pressure efficiency increased by 1.7 % and sound pressure level was almost the same. For the above reasons, we found leakage of flow from leading edge could be decreased by adjusting the maximum camber position of the blade tip. Decreasing leakage contributed to increasing static pressure efficiency and decreasing electric power consumption.

In ASME 2008 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2008-49547.

Full text
Abstract:
The midspan section of a multi-stage subsonic turbine that is built and tested at the University of Hannover is redesigned using a new inverse blade design method where the blade walls move with a virtual velocity distribution derived from the difference between the current and the target pressure loading on the blade surfaces. The prescribed design variables are the blade loading and thickness distribution. This new inverse method is fully consistent with the viscous flow assumption and is implemented into the time accurate solution of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations that are expressed in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) form to account for mesh movement. A cell-vertex finite volume method of the Jameson type is used to discretize the equations in space; time accurate integration is obtained using dual time stepping. An algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is used for turbulence closure. The mixing plane approach is used to couple the blade row regions of the multistage. The CFD analysis formulation is first assessed against the multi-stage turbine experimental data. The method is then used to redesign the second and third stators of the 2.5 stage turbine so as to reduce the blade suction side diffusion. The results show that by carefully tailoring the target pressure loading, some improvement can be achieved in the turbine performance.

Abstract:
Experimental studies are made on transportation of gas across radial shaft seals. Gas flow rates are determined with gas chromatography. Gas is pumped in, while gas also leaks at about half of the pump rate. The flow rates increase with shaft speed and oil viscosity, though paraffinic mineral oils allow more gas to move than polyalphaolefin of the same viscosity. The rate also depends on gas. These suggest that gas is conveyed by hydrodynamic flow of oil at the seal lip.

Adams, George G. "The Sliding of an Elastic Half-Space Against a Rigid Surface With Friction Reduction due to Incident Dilatational Waves." In ASME 1999 Design Engineering Technical Conferences. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc99/vib-8138.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The steady sliding of a flat homogeneous and isotropic elastic half-space against a flat rigid surface, under the influence of incident plane dilatational waves, is investigated. The interfacial coefficient of friction is constant with no distinction between static and kinetic friction. It is shown here that the reflection of a harmonic wave under steady sliding consists of a pair of body waves (a plane dilatational wave and a plane shear wave) radiated from the sliding interface. Each wave propagates at a different angle such that the trace velocities along the interface are equal and supersonic. The angles of wave propagation are determined by the angle of the incident wave, by the Poisson’s ratio, and by the coefficient of friction. The amplitude of the incident waves is subject only to the restriction that the perturbations in interface contact pressure and tangential velocity satisfy the inequality constraints for unilateral sliding contact. It is also found that an incident rectangular wave can allow for relative sliding motion of the two bodies with a ratio of remote shear to normal stress which is less than the coefficient of friction. Thus the apparent coefficient of friction is less than the interface coefficient of friction. This reduction in friction is due to periodic stick zones which propagate supersonically along the interface. Under appropriate conditions, the bodies can move tangentially with respect to each other in the absence of an applied shear stress. The influences of the angle, amplitude, and shape of the incident rectangular wave, the interfacial friction coefficient, the sliding speed, and of the remotely applied normal stress, on friction reduction are determined.
