Abstract:
This study has conducted an analysis of how the monomyth has appeared in the fantasy story Diamond sword wooden sword part 1 and 2 by Nick Perumov. The study has confirmed that the story structure of the monomyth can be detected within several different characters progression. The study does not claim that all of the different stages within the monomyth can be identified within one single characters, but rather that there are several different characters that reinvents the world and the community. Speculations about why the authors story structure follows a ”divided” version of the hero’s journey are presented. The study also conducts an analysis of Perumovs construction of the society, male characters and female characters, which showed no distinct division in the construction of the two genders within the story. The construction of the society is discussed in light of the authors national upbringing, in this case the former Soviet Union, and briefly how the conflict in the world of Melin could be inspired by the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.

During the Cold War, civil-military relations where essentially an internal matter; military cooperation focused on capacities. With the rise of the security sector reform (SSR) agenda, the UN and the donor community seek to actively shape the civil-military relations of countries emerging from conflict. The theme is heir to the impact of the Cold War`s decline on European integration, the development agenda, and UN peacekeeping operations. The agenda is contested by NGOs and the Non-Aligned Movement, concerned with the reduction of resources for development and increasing authority of the Security Council. In the case of Timor, the transitory administration of 1999 considered it had no role in support of the armed forces. After the 2006 crisis - in which army and police were involved in extreme politicization, human rights violations and serial desertion - the new peacekeeping operation was given an explicit mandate to support the review of the security sector. The study analyzes how the UN`s position in the field followed the evolution of the SSR agenda at headquarters.

Colquhoun, Ian. "The bronze swords of Ireland." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11267/.

Full text
Abstract:
The leaf shaped bronze sword is one of the most distinctive and evocative weapons of prehistory. The type appears throughout Western Europe in the final centuries of the second millennium BC only to disappear as an artefact type with the widespread introduction of iron weapons hundreds of years later. The widespread distribution of the bronze sword points to the increasingly martial nature of Late Bronze Age society, a feature echoed in Ireland by the appearance of defensive landscape features. The expansion and development of Irish archaeology in the last fifteen years has rather left metalwork and swords, in particular, behind, as the main focus has moved away from artefacts towards settlement. It is only in recent years that interest has revived in the Bronze Age and bronze metalwork. Over six hundred swords have been recovered from Ireland, the vast majority being nineteenth century finds. Most belong to the equivalent of the Ewart Park type in Britain – but there are significant numbers of early flange hilted weapons and of the late Gundlingen type. This thesis represents the first major study of the development and context of the Irish swords since George Eogan’s work (Eogan 1964). It examines, in addition to those weapons listed in Eogan’s catalogue, all of the more recent discoveries, and takes as the central theme the biography or life cycle of a sword, from manufacture through to use and deposition, with the emphasis on the latter. The thesis represents a companion to the comprehensive analysis and catalogue of Bronze Age swords in Britain, co- authored by myself and Colin Burgess (Colquhoun and Burgess 1988). Following the death of Ian Colquhoun on 7th June 2013, the thesis was compiled, formatted and submitted posthumously by his supervisors – Dr Benjamin Roberts and Dr Tom Moore.

Miotto, Lopes Lucas. "Covenants and swords : coercion in law." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31490.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the coerciveness of legal systems. I defend two main claims: that typical legal systems are much less coercive than most legal and political philosophers think, and that legal systems are not necessarily coercive. My defence is developed in three parts. The first is dedicated to building the necessary theoretical framework to defend the main claims of this thesis. This is where I offer a rigorous formulation of the questions that this thesis addresses and contextualise them within broader debates about the relationship between law and coercion. A substantial portion of the first part of the thesis is devoted to the development of two accounts: an account of coercion and an account of the conditions legal systems must satisfy in order to be coercive. The second part is where I advance two arguments for the claim that typical legal systems are much less coercive than it is usually thought. The first is an argument that establishes that our legal systems rarely issue conditional threats. Given that issuing conditional threats is a necessary condition for any legal system to be coercive - or so I claim in the first part of the thesis - the fact that our legal systems rarely do so undermines the view that our legal systems are pervasively coercive. The second argument is based on the reasons why citizens comply with legal mandates. I analyse the relevant empirical data and show that compliance is not frequently owed to the threat of unwelcome consequences. This should not have been the case had our legal systems been as coercive as philosophers generally think. The third part deals with the claim that legal systems are necessarily coercive. There I address some methodological concerns that this claim gives rise to and propose two arguments for viewing coerciveness as a contingent feature of our legal systems.

Abstract:
The 2014 Ebola Outbreak which is still ongoing in Sierra Leone and Guinea, in West Africa, have caught the attention of media globally. By exploring the coverage of the outbreak within the concept of global crisis reporting and global journalism as news style, this study compares two newspapers, one based in South Africa (The Mail & Guardian) and the other one from the United Kingdom (The Guardian). How we define ’global crisis’ from different media systems that cut cross, these two media motivate the study to dig in to explore similarities and differences in the Ebola news coverage from Cottle’s and Berglez’s point of views. A content analysis was used to analyze news story articles (text) published in both newspapers. A census selection of 72 articles from both “Mail & Guardian” and “the Guardian” digital newspapers was applied. The selection of articles was based on the news stories article published within the two months (July and August 2014). The time frame used was a critical moment for the outbreak since it had started expanding to other countries. Through the analysis, both notions of global crisis and global journalism as news style has been identified in the 2014 Ebola coverage.

(cont.) Domestic politics, then, frequently have a decisive impact on strategic planning and produces policies that the consideration of external threats alone would not suggest.
This dissertation proposes that militaries in developing states are usually deeply divided internally on domestic social, economic, and political issues. Contrary to the way the military is often portrayed, there is no single "military mind." Neither, however, are internal military divisions primarily idiosyncratic. Differences in composition and sociology endow different military services and branches with distinct domestic preferences. High-tech military organizations are more likely to support liberal socio-economic positions, while troop-oriented ones often embrace integral nationalism--a statist vision of development aimed at unifying the state by reducing economic and social differences. These propositions are tested against the history of armies and navies in Thailand, China, and Indonesia since 1945, as well as additional evidence from Latin American, European, and other Asian states. The case studies examine coups, counter-coups, military-sponsored "mass" movements, and legislative battles involving uniformed officers. The historical evidence confirms the theory. Military services often take opposite sides in domestic disputes, with naval officers consistently backing more liberal socio-economic positions than their army colleagues, especially those from the infantry branch. The balance of power between contending military actors frequently determines national political trajectories for decades at a stretch. These patterns of divided military involvement in politics carry critical implications for international security. The political leaders who emerge victorious from domestic battles often secure their military flank by giving substantial control over strategy and force planning to uniformed allies.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project was designed as a large scale detailed study of British swords and spearheads, of the period from approximately 1250-750BC. 202 small metallurgical samples and 4 large sword cross sections were examined metallographically. Chemical compositions were ascertained. Sections of 'sword edge' were prepared and impacted experimentally to reproduce combat damage and the results used to help assess the 499 swords and 485 spearheads, which were measured and examined visually. The results were analysed statistically according to regional and typological groupings. The distribution of manufacturing characteristics showed significant regional and typological variations and indicate a hierarchy of technical proficiency. Metallographic examinations also revealed a number of weapons which had been burnt. The compositional analyses showed metal being recycled and mixed, although alloys used were similar. Aspects of typological classification were quantified and regional patterns of distribution were assessed. Patterns of damage confirmed that that the majority of the weapons had probably been used in combat before deposition. There were significant regional and chronological differences in the proportions so used. Patterns of non-combat damage, breakage and depositional context showed that despite evident similarities some highly significant regional, chronological and typological differences existed. The weapons indicate that warfare was endemic but probably sporadic and low level. Communities appear to have exercised some form of social sanctioning over warriors, in part by incorporating weapons and the concept of war symbolically within their ceremonials. Deposition practices varied with time and locality but many do appear to have been ritual. There were also distinct regional and chronological traditions in the design, manufacturing and pre-depositional combat use of weapons. The evidence points to an escalation in long distance travel and exchange of goods and ideas, increasing contacts between regions, where people adapted the new to their own society.

From the Peace of Westphalia to the present, the ruling elites of kingdoms and states have attempted one international bargain after another for a variety of purposes. Whether it is to protect the integrity of a ruling system such as aristocratic orders, the prevention of power politics, or the mere hope of avoiding the scourge of world war, the West has consistently sought to use multilateral institutions to accomplish these ends, among others. What causes these multilateral attempts to succeed or fail, and more importantly, what is multilateralisms center of gravity? This thesis suggests that the fear and attractions of state leadersand the circumstance within which they perceive these fears and attractionsis the center of gravity of the Wests most important multilateral attempts. These attempts include the Peace of Westphalia, the British Act of Union, the Congress System, the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Furthermore, it is these human traits among elite figures in the context of historical study that best explain the success or failure of Western Multilateralism over that of the application of theoretical sciences.

Stepko, Deidra. "Teacher and Parent/guardian Perspectives on Student Retention." Thesis, Point Park University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10838658.

Abstract:

Student retention, the practice of having a student repeat a grade level of schooling due to low academic performance or delayed behavioral and social development, is a common yet controversial educational practice in the United States. Extensive literature exists on the effects of retention on students’ academic outcomes, socialization, and self-esteem, but with mixed results. The perceptions of teachers and principals on the practice of retention have also been studied. Even though many school districts have policies stating that decisions on retaining students at the elementary level are made by teachers and parents/guardians, the perceptions of parents/guardians as compared to teachers on the practice of retention has not been thoroughly examined. This mixed methods study collected quantitative and qualitative data on the perceptions of teachers and parents/guardians on student retention through an established survey and through personal interviews. The study revealed that there are significant differences in the perceptions of parents/guardians as compared to teachers on when retention is appropriate for students. There are also differences in what teachers and parents/guardians identify as factors to consider for recommending retention and their long-term concerns for students when considering retention. Revealing these differences and understanding that both parties have an overall concern for the well-being of the student will help to bridge the communication gap between teachers and parents/guardians and guide them toward making collaborative decisions for students. Although this study is a first step toward this understanding and collaboration, there are many factors involved in making decisions on student retention, so these findings will require further research.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Timothy Duket
Synthesizing elements of so many traditions, fantasy has grown into perhaps the most pervasive genre of literature in the western world. The archetypal adventures and themes that have been carried into fantasy through ancient legends and myths have survived over the ages because it was decided long ago those tales had great worth. It was the unpopular and poorly formed legends that died out, while the superior stories were carried from culture to culture under new guises. In this way, fantasy can be seen as the culmination of human legends, filtered throughout history so that only the great tales remain. On what greater pedestal could a form of literature be based? Fantasy has even continued the refinement process in the last fifty years, with active writers like Jordan and Goodkind incorporating elements from the greatest of previous fantasy authors like Tolkien, Howard, and Donaldson. Thus fantasy is continually improving upon itself and evolving in new ways through its modification of old themes. How long can critics refuse to recognize fantasy as a legitimate form? With such admirable authors writing today, it seems logical that the answer would be sooner rather than later. Might fantasy be vanquished by sneering critics and replaced with another form of fiction? Gandalf claims even the Wise cannot see all ends, and while in no way do I profess such wisdom, I find it difficult to believe that, as the successor of mythology, fantasy will ever fizzle and die. A force greater than all the magic swords and rings combined would be necessary to kill four thousand years of human imagination

Abstract:
Purpose: Evaluate behavior assessment and agreement among dentist, guardian, and child. Evaluate child behavior by appointment type. Methods: Patients recruited from the pediatric dental department at Virginia Commonwealth University for this convenience sample. Inclusion criteria: patients presenting for clinical exams and/or restorative treatment without the use of advanced behavior guidance between August 29, 2018, and March 7, 2019; ages 4-12-years-old; and scheduled with a single clinician. Appointments were stratified by difficulty. Behavior was assessed by dentist and caregiver using the Frankl Scale. Patient self-assessed cooperation using an age-appropriate modified Frankl Scale, developed for this study. Agreement assessed among the 3 scores at each appointment using descriptive statistics and Cohen’s Kappa. Behavior trends across appointment type assessed using Kruskal-Wallis test. SAS software (2013, Cary, NC). P-value < 0.05. Results: Forty-one patient-guardian dyads enrolled in the study. Five dyads experienced multiple encounters. Demographics for the patients enrolled: 59% male; 44% Caucasian, 29% African American, 5% Asian, 2% Hispanic, 20% other/multiracial. Average patient age: 7.6 (range: 4- 12). Most patients had 1 encounter (n=36, 88%). Frankl Score agreement for provider/guardian was 79% (k=0.335), provider/child was 70% (k=0.248), and guardian/child was 81% (k=0.314). In disagreements, guardians rated behavior better than provider. Disagreement was split for provider/child and guardian/child, with the child tending to rate themselves higher, and the guardian tending to rate the child higher respectively. Marginal evidence that hard appointments resulted in poorer behaviors. Conclusion: There is fair agreement between child, guardian, and provider. In disagreements, guardians tend to rate the child’s behavior better compared to the provider and child self-assessment. Dental providers tend to be more critical of patient behavior. Marginal evidence to support harder appointments result in poorer behaviors.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis investigates student team working, by designing, implementing and evaluating a prototype software system, as an aid for co-located students carrying out their team project work. In higher education team projects are a good way for students to put theory into practice and gain experience of team working, by working collaboratively. But difficulties often arise during the projects, which prevent students from benefiting fully from the experience. Some difficulties are known to arise in organisational teams, and others are unique to student teams, but the getting started stage is crucial for developing team cohesion. Technology tools are used to support the task oriented roles of team working, but there is little support for students to get started on their team projects, and to develop a shared understanding. This prototype system provides a function for allocating tasks of the project to appropriate team members and a function to help the team to agree ground rules for team working. A case study approach was adopted for this research, and the prototype system was developed over three cycles, amending the system according to student feedback. At the end of the study, data obtained from the students was analysed to find out how useful the online support system was for helping the student teams to get started on their projects. The students in this case did benefit from the functions this system provided, in particular the team leaders used the output to help plan their projects, and output from the system contributed to team cohesion through developing a shared understanding between the team members. These students recognised the potential of the system for helping students working on team projects online, and gave suggestions for modifications to the system that could be incorporated in further development of the system.

Abstract:
Purpose: To understand guardian and child preferences for the appearance of their pediatric dentist. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study using survey methodology with patients and parents that attended the VCU Pediatric Dental clinic. Methods: A total sample of 100 guardians and 97 pediatric patient participants completed the computer-based questionnaire. Four subjects were asked to pose for photographs wearing various combinations of attire (professional, casual, white coat, scrubs). Results: Among guardians, 56% reported preferring a provider in scrubs, with white coat the second most preferred attire (39%) for their children. For pediatric patients, scrubs were still most often selected, but at a lower rate (43%). White coat remained the second most preferred option at 37%. Conclusions: Children and parents have strong perceptions and preferences regarding their dentists’ attire. The results of this study can be used, by providers, to improve the comfort, and acceptance of care by patients and guardians.

Abstract:
Research about viking age swords is nothing new but for a long time the main focus have been different aspects of typologies which have evolved since early 20th century. During the last 30 years the still growing communities of Viking reenactment have shed new light upon the fighting skills of pre Christian Nordic societies. With developing knowledge of ancient metallurgy and understanding of swordsmithing we might have new ways to interpret the swords found originating in the 8th to 11th centuries. In this paper the author will be making an attempt to assess and analyze swords on Gotland to uncover whether they were made as practical fighting weapons or merely symbols of social status and power, or both. The main source of information regarding the swords found on Gotland comes from the extensive catalogues Die Wikingerzeit Gotlands I-II by Lena Thunmark-Nylén 1996, 1998 and Viking Swords by Fedir Androshchuk 2014. For a deeper understanding of the materials used in sword- and weaponsmithing, information from metalurgically examined specimens presented by Lena Thålin Bergman will be used as cross reference.

Electronic medical records (EMR) have the advantage of being easy to modify, organize, and distribute and would give healthcare providers a more complete patient history. The ideal EMR system should maintain records that are easily transferable and are administered and owned by the patient. One such system striving to meet those needs is Personal Internetworked Notary and Guardian (PING). A system like PING would run off a single server. The problem with centralized storage is that it creates a single point of failure which has the potential for problems. I propose a distributed storage system that is similar to RAID 5 system. Abstract:
This case study researches newsroom convergence as a process at the Mail & Guardian newspaper and their online edition the Mail & Guardian Online. It focuses on the reporters’ and editors’ attitudes towards newsroom convergence and on cultural resistance against change; one of the major challenges in the process. With structured interviews, observations and questionnaires it was analysed that communication problems between the newsrooms, different production cycles and time management issues are other prominent difficulties. The case study furthermore provides a snapshot of the convergence phenomenon as a process in a particular South African news organisation. The outcomes could not only assist other news companies with convergence plans but also be used as a pilot study for further research on converged newsrooms in South Africa.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the references to swords in key scenes in the Aeneid – particularly the scenes of Dido’s and Turnus’ death – in order to add new perspectives on these scenes and on the way in which they impact on the presentation of Aeneas’ Roman mission in the epic. In Chapter Two I attempt to provide an outline of the mission of Aeneas. I also investigate the manner in which Dido and Turnus may be considered to be opponents of Aeneas’ mission. In Chapter Three I investigate references to swords in select scenes in book four of the Aeneid. I highlight an ambiguity in the interpretation of the sword that Dido uses to commit suicide and I also provide a description of the sword as a weapon and its place in the epic. In Chapter Four I provide an analysis of the references to swords in Dido’s and Turnus’ death scenes alongside a number of other important scenes involving mention of swords. I preface my analyses of the references to swords that play a role in interpreting Dido and Turnus’ deaths with an outline of the reasons for the deaths of each of these figures. The additional references to swords that I use in this chapter are the references to the sword in the scene of Deiphobus’ death in book six and to the sword and Priam’s act of arming himself on the night on which Troy is destroyed. At the end of Chapter Four I look at parallels between Dido and Turnus and their relationship to the mission of Aeneas. At the end of this thesis I am able to conclude that an investigation and analysis of the references to swords in select scenes in the Aeneid adds to existing scholarship in Dido’s and Turnus’ death in the following way: a more detailed investigation of the role of swords in the interpretation of Dido’s death from an erotic perspective strengthens the existing notion in scholarship that Dido is an obstacle to the mission of Aeneas.
Full text
Abstract:
Use-wear analysis is increasingly employed to interpret the function of prehistoric artefacts and so draw inferences about the intentions of those who commissioned them. The aim of the present study was to develop a clearer understanding of the intended function of prehistoric weaponry, particularly those swords and rapiers recovered along Europe’s Atlantic Facade. The main question posed was: can it be determined from the visible traces on Atlantic Middle Bronze Age long-bladed weapons if they were designed primarily as lethal instruments of combat or did they serve some other, perhaps ceremonial purpose and, if so, what socio-political consequences might this suggest? The development of Bronze Age societies was examined, particularly the roles of warfare as a driver of social complexity and that of the iconic sword wielding warrior. There is, however, little or no evidence in the osteological record for the use of this weapon. The condition of a representative sample of Middle Bronze Age swords and rapiers from the British Isles, Atlantic Europe and the Iberian Peninsula was also recorded and this data augmented using numerous archaeological catalogues. An artefact biography approach, an extension of the chaine operatoire, was then employed to study the design, production, use and disposal of these weapons. Experiments were also conducted to establish that a perceived weakness in Middle Bronze Age weapons, the hilt attachment, was not due to any technical constraints. While the quantity of European material was insufficient for any detailed analysis, that from Britain and Ireland showed several marked differences. Both suffered substantial peri-depositional abuse but the latter displayed clear signs of widespread reuse and subsequent damage in modem times. A comparative study of Irish and British Late Bronze Age swords would probably reveal yet greater modem use, with further work also necessary to determine any taphanomic contribution to apparent damage.

Du, Toit Merise. "Parent and guardian support of Korean migrant learners' primary schooling experience." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/19944.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Trans-national migration to English-speaking countries has become increasingly popular among Asian families. Their aim is for their children to obtain overseas educational credentials and to gain the English language as cultural capital in the global market. Over the past few years, South Africa has been perceived as a place where immigrants, as well as migrants can make a new life for themselves and their families. The study aimed to explore the support given by parents/guardians of Korean migrant learners with regard to the learners' primary schooling experiences. In seeking to understand the phenomenon of parent/guardian support of Korean migrant learners' primary schooling experiences, I use the ecosystemic approach, which is constructed by both the general systems and the ecological theories. I discuss the ecosystemic framework by dividing it into its micro-, meso- and macro-systems. In the research, within the micro- and meso-systems the parent/guardian was considered to be part of a larger system of family, school, education system and community. These systems interact with each other. Acculturation theory, which focuses on psychological adjustment of the migrant learners, influenced the inquiry. Furthermore, Korean migrant families struggle within various ecological social systems outside the family system. These include the educational, physical, mental health, economic and political systems, which can influence the reasons for migration. The matter of cultural differences and the way in which they influence Korean migrant learners' schooling experiences were also explored. The macro-systems analysis includes Bourdieu's theory on cultural capital and the social closure theory. The specific design selected for this study is a case study that is qualitative and explorative in nature. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individual parents/guardians and a focus group to gather information regarding the support given to Korean migrants in their primary schooling experiences. The data was analysed within the micro-, meso- and macro-systems and themes emerged during the interviews. The findings revealed that the macro-systems focused on the reasons for migration, which were gaining English skills and experiencing the process of globalisation. The study also focused on the micro-systems and thus dealt with the diverse experiences of the participants, which included the family dynamics, the support given to Korean migrant learners and parents'/ guardians' perceptions of schooling experiences. The trans-national migrant families in South Africa vary between 'wild goose families', nuclear families and guardianships. The support given to Korean migrant learners ranges from emotional support (e.g. hugs, kisses and motivation), financial support (e.g. money for various things) and physical support (e.g. transport) to spiritual support (e.g. praying and going to church). It was concluded from the study that cultural capital and global positional competition play an important role in Korean migrant learners' primary schooling experiences. Although these parents/guardians bring the learners to South Africa to move away from the very formal education system of Korea, it seems as if they are still reinscribing familiar patterns of living in South Africa. It is questioned whether it is not better for Korean learners to be educated in Korea. They appear to improve their English language in South Africa, but may be compromised in other areas, such as emotional well-being, which could cause poor psychological adjustment. Therefore it is recommended that more knowledge be gained in order know how to support these learners effectively.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the media representations of the refugees in the United Kingdom, during the first three months of 2018. The stated period succeeds the peak of the refugee crisis, which benefitted from a high media coverage. Scholars have concluded that media representations of the refugee crisis during its peak were often stereotyped and collectivised. This thesis aims to find out how the refugee crisis is represented in the period after the peak. Thus, the thesis analyses the newspaper The Guardian, by using the method of Critical Discourse Analysis in order to reveal the frames and collectivisation/individualisation practices in the news articles. In this way, the theories of representation, stereotyping and framing represent the basis of this study. Furthermore, individualisation and collectivisation practices represent the core of this thesis, since studying their presence can reveal underlying stereotypes in the news articles. The analysis revealed that The Guardian’s reports presented both individualised and collectivised representations of the refugees. Hence, the thesis concluded that The Guardian has attempted a more positive way of reporting, but their reports are not totally objective and unbiased.

Abstract:
The State of Arizona remains one of the few states where the number of children entering care is increasing rather than remaining stable or decreasing (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). Although there is no research delineating the reasons for this trend, there are a multitude of challenges within Arizona’s child welfare system. This study examines one of the challenges within this system: the specific roles of two different legal representatives for children in dependency cases. The study aimed to discover how guardians ad litem (GAL) and children’s attorneys (CA) in Arizona perceive and execute their roles, as well as to better understand their needs. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five GALs, four CAs, and one attorney who identified as both. Results indicated both types of attorneys perceived their roles to be distinct statutorily, subjective, and an opportunity to provide their child clients with assistance in a variety of ways. Attorneys described execution of their roles through descriptions of general legal duties, communication with child clients, and interactions with other professionals. Lastly, attorneys detailed four challenges to successful execution of their roles including: coping with their own mental health, overwhelmed courts, limited training, and a lack of community resources. This study was limited by a homogeneous sample, in regard to both race (all Caucasian), as well as location which limits generalizability. Further, only one researcher conducted analyses. Future research should seek to better understand others' perspectives regarding child welfare cases, such as judges, parents' attorneys, Department of Child Safety (DCS) caseworkers, or the child clients. Research could also be helpful in creating specific guidelines in determining the "best interests" of a child, or developing materials and trainings that would assist attorneys in their current roles.

Abstract:
This thesis explores male and female identity in Old Norse and British iterations of the Völsung legend, focusing on the Poetic Edda and Völsunga saga, William Morris's The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, and Melvin Burgess’s Bloodtide and Bloodsong. Using poststructuralist theories of gender and posthumanism to analyse representations of gender in these texts, it argues that, in the Old Norse versions of this legend, female identity is closely connected to the control of representations of narrative events, whereas male identity is subject to this control but becomes more overtly fluid in the depiction of shape-shifting. The thesis goes beyond previous critical analyses of gender in these texts which observe an active/ passive binary, or focus on female monstrosity and lament, and male heroism. Unlike most examinations of adaptations of this legend which focus on the medieval or Victorian material, this thesis provides a detailed exploration of The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs in conjunction with its Old Norse sources. In doing so, it establishes the silencing of female characters by Morris's rewriting, and the foregrounding of male identity through a focus on the body, performance and the built environment. This thesis also considers both the Old Norse texts and Morris's poem alongside later, critically neglected, British versions of the legend to explore the ways in which narrative form influences the representation of the multiplicity of gender in The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, and the importance of a posthuman conception of identity in Bloodtide and Bloodsong. The thesis argues that the Old Norse sources do not stand aside from their later interpretations as something complete and originary, but are themselves supplemented by the rewritings of Morris, Tolkien and Burgess; it is, therefore, necessary to foreground our knowledge of all these iterations of the narrative to offer a fuller understanding of gender in the Old Norse Völsung legend and its British rewritings.

Creese, Michael John. "'Swords trembling in their scabbards' : a study of Indian officers in the Indian Cavalry, 1858 – 1918." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8635.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indian army under British rule was unique in that it had two sets of officers, one British and one Indian. The Indian officers played a vital role within their regiments but could never proceed to the higher levels of command. Even the most senior and experienced Indian officer was subordinate to the most newly-arrived British subaltern and Indian officers were never allowed to command British troops. This study, believed to be the first of its kind, explores the education, selection and training of Indian officers together with their changing role in the period 1858 to 1918 with a brief coda covering changes up to Indian Independence in 1947. The study focuses on the careers of the Indian officers of four cavalry regiments and their achievements during this period. Letters sent to and from them while they were serving in France during the Great War are used to personalise the story and, in particular, use is made of previously unpublished material from the diary of Amar Singh. He had a very varied military career which illustrates the difficulties facing Indian officers at this time. The study concludes that although the Indian officers were undoubtedly very courageous and effective troop and squadron commanders, they were held back by their lack of a basic general education. Racial stereotyping by many of their British commanders of the period led to their refusal to believe that Indians could be, at least potentially, as capable as themselves. This prejudice was part of the wider social gulf between the two races. In spite of these difficulties, the Indian officers made a very significant contribution to the overall effectiveness of the Indian Army of this period.

This study is about the representations of Brazil in the context of the UK ‘quality’ press. The main objective is to investigate the cultural elements present in The Guardian newspaper that contribute to give visibility to a Brazilian identity, which is constructed by symbolic practices of the context of its circulation. The theoretical approach is based on the field of the British cultural studies and journalism, by taking the perspective of cultural analysis and the analytical model of Richard Johnson (1999). This methodological approach proposes an articulation between the moments of the communicative process [circuit of culture]. In this sense, the thesis pursues the characteristics and implications of each moment, but the emphasis is on the connections between them, which provides an analytical framework for research: production and lived cultures, production and texts and texts and readings. The final results point out that the Brazilian identity constructed by the British emerges closer to the idea of socio-cultural complexity of the nation. The main cultural meanings produced and analysed through the articulations are the territory, social inequality and cultural diversity of the country.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the media discourse surrounding Kibera, an urban informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Using a qualitative content analysis, this study identifies and critically analyses reoccurring themes in the descriptions of Kibera in the UK broadsheet paper The Guardian. The claimed relevance of such analysis rests upon the assumption that discourse matter; certain narratives can influence beliefs and policy concerning the management of urban informal settlements, with material effects for these places and their residents. The result of the analysis shows there are varying and conflicting themes in the portrayal of Kibera, describing the community in both negative and positive terms. However, the imageries move between two extremes, either describing Kibera as an urban dystopia of crime, suffering and filth, or emphasising stories of hope, success and the entrepreneurial spirit of Kibera’s residents. Missing in the articles are descriptions of Kibera in terms of being an ‘ordinary place’, where people live their everyday lives and make ends meet. Drawing on earlier research about connections between language and representation in the construction of marginalized places, this paper discusses the possible consequences of hyperbolic and sensationalistic discourse, arguing for a more nuanced portrayal of the Kibera community and its residents – depictions that won’t further marginalise Kibera and its people, nor romanticize life in this highly populated low-income community.
