Sibona, Bruno. "Mazeppa's horse : a case study of Anglo-French intertextuality." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.286185.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to reassess the value of the horse-figure in the tale of Mazeppa. The study begins with an attempt to establish the status of the tale as a Romantic myth in Western European culture and identifies four texts as a corpus of study: Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII, roi de Suede, Lord Byron's Mazeppa, its translation into French by Amedee Pichot and, finally, Victor Hugo's 'Mazeppa' from his collection Les Orientales. Using methodologies derived from the history of ideas, psychoanalysis, and contextual and intertextual approaches, it is proposed that these four texts form a chain of meaning. The texts are examined at symbolic, structural and textual levels. At these levels, the concepts of the 'centaur complex' and the 'Pegasus complex' are introduced, enabling the outline of the horse as a representation of poetic inspiration and genius to emerge. This appears implicitly or explicitly in the texts and is effected through a dialectical process of fusion and inversion occurring within the man-animal relationship. As a result, the horse becomes not only a thematic link, or 'bridge', horizontally tying the chain of texts together, but it also endorses, within each text, a deeper, vertical function supporting metapoetic meaning and thus reaching the field of poetic ontology. The figurative horse is the 'real' creative surge for each writer within himself and between each text. Poetic creation springs from a hollow wound which the horse, representing the urge of expression, comes to fill and heal. This language transcends nationalities, but, as the story of Mazeppa was written both in English and in French, and also for other methodological reasons, the thesis is distinctively comparative. However, the double function of the horse implies that each text is studied on its own as well as in relation to the other texts of the corpus.

This thesis examines waterfront developments in the Middle East . It concentrates on the Golden Horn project in Istanbul as it raises a number of issues that are central to any such development in that region. In order for us to appreciate the problem, the thesis starts with an examination of the history of the city of Istanbul. This is followed by an investigation of the role of the Golden Hom in its life throughout history. The main issue raised in waterfront developments in a Middle Eastern context is discontinuity between the city and the new development through the introduction of new users, functions, scale and sensibilities alien to what exists now. Istanbul, being part of an international heritage, its preservation and continuity to the water's edge becomes a moral obligation as well as a practical need to protect rest of its fabric from the repercussions of overloading. A performance specification is put forward to integrate the development back into the life of the city. Formally, urban waterfronts in the context of the Middle East are problematic as no precedent exists for dealing with the water's edge. Hence an investigation of the cultural attitude to nature and the form of the city is put forward, from which principles and orders are extrapolated to aid the designers in their approach to the problem.

Full text
Abstract:
Wången is a trotting school located in Alsen region in Mid Sweden. Currently they keep almost 105 horses in their premises, which produce 2 400 m3 of stall waste per year.  Stall waste has always been a concern for those who keep animals, and though composting has been a viable solution to this problem for quite some time, it is no longer the only solution. Stall waste can be converted to energy and there are different techniques and approaches to do so.  In this study the writer compares the viability of two possible techniques (Biogas and heating plant) by collecting data from two existing biogas and heating plant providers for Wången trotting school. The results show that with almost same amount of investment on the reactors, a heating plant can meet 85% of Wången heating demand while Biogas plant could only meet 10 % of Wången’s heating consumption. On the other hand, as a result of nitrogen bound compound existence in horse manure, burning stall waste in the heating plant showed a more acidifying potential compared to the biogas plant.

Crossman, Georgina Katrina. "The organisational landscape of the English horse industry : a contrast with Sweden and the Netherlands." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/111475.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contrasts the equine policy networks and organisational landscapes of the horse industry in England, Sweden and the Netherlands. In order to analyse each network the conceptual framework offered by the Marsh-Rhodes policy network typology is adopted, while the dimensions of membership, integration, resources and power are specifically considered. The origins and development of each policy network studied are analysed, along with an appraisal of their inherent characteristics. The cultivation and maintenance of consistency, communication and collaboration within a diverse policy network are examined. In addition, the influence of a diverse policy network on policy decision making is explored. The importance of relationships between key individuals within policy networks is analysed, along with the significance of the micro and macro levels of the networks. Finally, the future development of the equine policy network and horse industry in England for the benefit of interest groups and the government is considered. Within each policy network a specific organisation which acted as the mouthpiece for interest groups within the network to the government was identified. However, the structure of each of these bodies and their mode of operation differed considerably between countries. In Sweden and the Netherlands, the connection between the equine and agricultural policy networks was shown to be significant in the development of the relationship between interest groups within the horse industry and the government. In both countries an organisation from the agricultural sector expedited the development of this relationship. The level of government intervention and financial support afforded to each horse industry varied. Significant differences in key sub-sectors of each of the policy networks studied, specifically sport and recreation, and breeding, were identified, while recent developments in the European-wide equine policy network were also examined.

Curtis, Laila. "Developing evidence on the primary case presentation and assessment of acute abdominal pain (colic) in the horse." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33454/.

Full text
Abstract:
Abdominal pain (colic) in the horse is one of the most common emergency problems in the horse, but there are major gaps in the current evidence. Five original studies were undertaken to build evidence on the primary assessment of abdominal pain in the horse. The first study was a systematic review of risk factors for abdominal pain. This identified 83 publications on risk factors for colic; 47 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed and categorised. Twenty four studies were evaluated using the JBI-Mastari critical appraisal tool. Evidence from the ten publications with least susceptibility to bias was collated. There was consensus of evidence for increasing age, recent change in diet and previous history of abdominal pain are risk factors for colic. This evidence should inform veterinary practitioner’s clinical decision making and approach to disease prevention. The second study was a systematic review of diagnostic tests for abdominal pain. This identified 190 publications; 46 publications met inclusion criteria and were reviewed and categorised. Thirty studies were evaluated using the QUADAS critical appraisal tool. None of the studies used a suitable methodology to assess the value of a diagnostic test to differentiate critical cases. The outcomes of this systematic review were a description of the current evidence and recommendations for future research using appropriate study designs. Both systematic reviews highlighted a lack of evidence from primary practice. The third study was a prospective survey of the primary assessment of horses with abdominal pain by veterinary practitioners. Data was collected from 1016 cases, including clinical history, presenting signs, diagnostic and treatment approaches and case outcome. Cases were categorised as critical or non-critical. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify clinical features associated with critical cases. Five variables remained in the final model: pain, heart rate, capillary refill time, pulse character and gastrointestinal borborygmi. These should be considered essential components of the initial assessment and triage of horses presenting with colic. The fourth study was an online survey of veterinary practitioner’s opinions of diagnostic tests for colic. Responses from 228 participants were analysed. The most frequently used tests were ‘response to analgesia’, ‘rectal examination’ and ‘nasogastric intubation’, but there was a wide variation in practitioners’ approaches. The main reasons for not using tests were that practitioners considered they were not required, or had concerns around personal safety, lack of facilities or financial constraints. The final phase was two multi-disciplinary workshops to review current evidence and generate recommendations. Fifty participants attended the first workshop and generated 84 statements on the recognition of colic. Forty one participants attended the second workshop and generated 160 statements on the assessment of horses with colic. These statements form the first phase of a multi-disciplinary Delphi process to develop best practice guidelines on the recognition and primary assessment of horses with abdominal pain. This research makes significant contributions to the current evidence on abdominal pain in the horse. It has consolidated existing information, made recommendations for future research, and worked with practitioners to address evidence gaps, and involved different stakeholders in deciding how this evidence should be applied.

Abstract:
The attributes of landscapes, abiotic and biotic, influence the behaviour of animals. Understanding the reciprocal effects between the landscape, habitats and the animals are an essential tool in sustainable management of natural resources as well as conservation. A source of information about how the environment shapes the behaviour of animals is movement data. The advent of cheap GPS devices has facilitated data collection. The fine scale spatio-temporal resolution allows the identification of complete home-ranges, even habitat that is only transiently used. Fine-scale movement data can also be used as proxy for behaviour-types; different behaviour states cause different movement tracks. I test, extend and apply the multi-change point analysis (MCPA), developed by Gurarie et al. (2009) for the identification of behavioural change points in irregular movement data. The method relies on conventional time-series analysis methods, rather than a Bayesian framework, such as the state space models. After thorough testing of the MCPA, we apply the method and its extension to the GPS data of four red deer and 27 golden eagles. The red deer data were analysed to detect behavioural changes at a seasonal scale and to serve as a test-bed for our extension of the MCPA. The comparison of movement bouts revealed that the expression of behaviour was on a gradient rather than the discreet states. The study of the golden eagle data highlighted the necessity to choose the appropriate sampling regime of movement. If the intervals between the location-fixes are too big, valuable information about important small scale behaviour will be missed.

Chan, Penny Yan Yan. "The economic role of Szechwan in Sung times (A.D. 960-1279): The case of the tea and horse exchange." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185331.

Full text
Abstract:
This is an historical survey of the economic role of Szechwan during Sung times (A.D. 960-1279). The tea and horse exchange was taken as a case to test the thesis that the economic policies implemented in Szechwan by the Sung government were a means to strengthen its defensive power. Although this is not an exploratory study on the role of the tea and horse exchange during Sung times, this study attempts to present its operation in a new and realistic perspective. Modern Western and Chinese scholars share the viewpoint that the expansion of the Sung to Szechwan was based upon an imperialistic motivation. The tea and horse exchange was a typical example of capitalizing upon the Szechwan resources and colonizing the minorities there. However, based on historical evidence, this study assumes that basically the Sung government wanted to maintain peace. Through the implementation of the tea and horse exchange, it was able to achieve a peaceful ethnic relationship in the southwest frontier. Some economic improvements were seen in the southwest minority areas after the exchange. Moreover, horses could be obtained, which were used, to a certain extent, to strengthen the Sung's military power although there were some problems. There are two major parts in this study. The first part attempts to present the general importance of Szechwan. It presents a prosperous picture of Szechwan on the eve of the establishment of the Sung dynasty. Due to the socio-economic heritage in Szechwan, special economic policies were implemented there by the Sung government in order to encourage further development, which could support its military. Some major policies are discussed in this part. In the second part, there is a study of the problem of the shortage of horses for military use, resulting in the implementation of the tea and horse exchange. The impact of the exchange on frontier relations and on Sung's military power and economic development as a whole are also discussed.

Sassenberg, Ulrike. "The role of key stakeholders in sustainable tourism development: the case study of Nelson/Marlborough/Golden Bay in New Zealand." AUT University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/983.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary tourism planning recognises that an integrated and sustainable development approach includes the participation of local communities and residents. Success depends on community level capacity for innovation and leadership which are important variables for the creation and implementation of new ideas as part of the development process. The main aim of this research is to determine the capacity of stakeholders to support integration of tourism and aquaculture through development of a themed seafood tourism trail in the Nelson/Marlborough/Golden Bay region of New Zealand as a means to promote sustainable tourism. In 2005 the Marine Farming Association developed and published the “Top of the South Aquaculture and Seafood Trail” as a brochure for tourists to promote a positive image of aquaculture in the region. The Trail integrates local tourism providers, restaurants, accommodation, seafood retail, as well as harvesting and processing businesses (mussel farms) as part of a themed driving route linking several peripheral communities. Themed driving routes are an innovative means for providing destinations with the opportunity to bring tourists and associated economic outcomes to remote locations. There is strong economic dependence on aquaculture and tourism in the region with both industries generating a combined NZ$402 million annually in the Nelson Region alone. The research involved interviews with 22 local stakeholders regarding their perceptions about strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities associated with the Trail as part of a mixed method, case study approach. The results show that tourism and aquaculture in the region are well developed, but that there are weaknesses in networking and collaboration within and among industrial sectors. In addition, there are differing perceptions of the aquaculture and tourism industries. The role of the university has been important in building community capacity for research and strategic planning linked to the Trail.

Hartman, Midori E. "Transformation as disease, reincorporation as cure : a comparative case-study of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses & C.S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27434.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the reception of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses in C.S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy through a case-study of the asinine transformations of Apuleius’ protagonist, Lucius, and Lewis’ antagonist, Prince Rabadash. Lewis’ use of Apuleius’ work as a model has been established in scholarship, specifically in his reworking of the Cupid and Psyche tale in Till We Have Faces (1956). This dissertation will analyze the elements of congruity between the tales of Lucius and Rabadash, namely: (1) the disregard of a superior’s warnings (Byrrhena, Aslan); (2) the “sin” of a personal lack of control (curiositas, pride) that leads to asinine metamorphosis; and (3) the reversal of metamorphosis through public religious ritual, thus resulting in a re-establishment in society with a new status (priesthood or eternal connection to the temple/deity). Medical anthropological models, specifically the health care systems and explanatory models (Kleinman: 1980), and the cultural anthropological model of the rites of passage (van Gennep: 1969) elucidate Lucius’ experiences within the context of Apuleius’ social world (2nd century A.D.) and Rabadash’s within the fictional world of Narnia. This dissertation seeks to broaden scholarship on classical reception in C.S. Lewis’ work, and add further insight into the studies of Apuleius through the use of social scientific criticism.

Johnson, Haley M. "A Case Study Comparing the Life Skills Development and Knowledge in Youth Participants of Horseless and Traditional Horse Programs in Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 2020. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7710.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional horse 4-H programs develop life skills and knowledge in youth. Horseless horse programs lack evaluation for the same benefits. This study evaluated and compared four horseless and seven traditional horse participants from Washington County 4-H in Utah for gains in horse knowledge and development of 10 life skills that are commonly found in 4-H curriculum today: leadership, teamwork, self-responsibility, personal safety, problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, goal setting, communication, and concern for others. The researcher conducted interviews to learn about life skill experiences of the horse program participants and discover what barriers prevented horseless youth from participating in traditional 4-H horse clubs. Participants also took a short knowledge quiz and a demographic survey. Money was identified as the most common reason horseless participants don’t have access to a horse and cannot participate in the traditional 4-H horse program. When compared, traditional horse youth showed greater life skill development and knowledge gain than horseless participants. Recommendations for future research into horseless programming included using other forms of research to evaluate the program further and identifying life skills for a statewide horseless curriculum.

Karlsson, Fredrik. "Painting stripes on a horse does not make it a zebra : The present and potential future of the International Court of Justice." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Political Science, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-9372.

Full text
Abstract:

Upon a closer examination of the role and performance of the International Court of Justice, we find that it does primarily fulfil its role and obligation as far as the UN charter and the Courts stature are concerned. It is upon the application of Kjell Goldmann’s Internationalists Programme that we find ourselves wanting more from the Court.

If we assume the development of international institutions, exchange, communication and the like to be desirable and necessary for the continued development of international peace and security, the ICJ can be shown to have had historical opportunities to affect the development to such an effect, but lacks the formal means to do so.

With the subscription to the internationalists programme, we find that there are plenty of potential improvements that could reasonably be made. These are primarily about the official influence of the Court, with regards to cases relevant to it and its jurisdiction, which is severely crippled by current regulatory framework. This is a condition shared with plenty of other international courts in their various forms.

Essentially, the current state of the ICJ lacks the desirable attributes and possibilities to influence the development of international law to any meaningful extent. If we indeed were to look for an international court with the means to build international legal institutions and seek to further enforce international peace and security, the ICJ is not what we are looking for.

Pereira, Ester Liberato. "Configurações sociohistóricas da equitação no Rio Grande do Sul : uma investigação das redes de interdependência nas práticas esportivas equestres." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/148775.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is to investigate the configurations of equestrian practices in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the twentieth century. The proposition of the research builds on the notion that the practices had a significant role in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, in particular in the fields of sociability, leisure and preservation of cultures. In the scenario of Rio Grande do Sul, the research devoted attention to the development of straight line horse races, horse racing, equestrianism, shot of lasso with horse and equine-assisted therapy. Such equestrian practices were conjectured by a sociohistorical perspective, whose analysis was guided by the category "configuration". This was operationalized from Norbert Elias work, leading the study in order to understand the process of emergence, distinction and interdependence of relations between the equestrian sports practices in the state. The research was based on the analysis of written and printed documents, which are designed as historical materials and texts, carrying messages, meanings and intentions reserved to their conjuncture. The sources revealed that a configuration development process in Rio Grande do Sul‘s equestrian scene emphasized a reconstruction of the varied and heterogeneous network of independencies between socializing areas represented by the horse racing, equestrian sports, equine-assisted therapy and shot of lasso with horse. Similarly, the changes occurred in the context of these socializing areas, over time, derived from the interrelationship between them, in the spheres of work, culture, leisure, sport and rehabilitation. Therefore, the notion of a configuration between equestrian practices can help understanding a new broader field of interactions and exchanges between the sports in general as socializing areas.

Duran, James Manuel. ""Are We Supposed to be the Guy on the Horse?" A Case Study on the Use of Political Cartoons in the American History Classroom." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4474.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent reports on the media saturation experienced by the twenty-first century student have brought about an increased interest in focusing attention on the issue of visual literacy in today's schools. Concepts such as instructional personalization, where approaches to curriculum design and instruction are created to concentrate on the individual strengths of the learner, have been promoted by some as a path to improving overall student performance. Many believe that the content of the Social Studies classroom easily lends itself to a visually stimulating approach and as such is an ideal laboratory to test hypotheses on such an approach. This study examines the use of one such visual tool in the Social Studies content arena, the political cartoon. Political cartoons are believed to be ideally suited to appeal to the visually oriented characteristics of the millennial student in the form of a potentially content rich primary source document. Described within the pages of this paper are the unique experiences with using political cartoons from the perspective of both middle school American History students and their teacher. The qualitative data uncovered through the collection of these experiences clearly illustrates a noticeable disparity between teacher and student experiences with cartoons from the present and their counterparts from the past. While present day cartoons covering various recent events in the news elicited an impressive level of informational recall and personal connections to the topics covered, the results were considerably less spectacular when political cartoons from the distant past were utilized. Those older images were more difficult for the students to grasp the artist's intent and failed as an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their mastery of content knowledge. It was concluded through an examination of interviews from both teacher and student that the differences observed between the older and newer images may be a function of several factors. Chief among these possible explanations from the point of view of the student was the lifelong collection of experiences that each child brought with them to the process of analyzing a political cartoon. The unique cultural capital possessed by each student as a result of their daily, almost nonstop exposure to all forms of media created a personal connection to the modern material that could not be matched by the content from the past. It was also revealed to be possible that a portion of the blame for the difficulties experienced with the materials from the past could be the result of the day to day decisions made by this one particular classroom teacher. The time and dedication to the mastery of the content knowledge and procedural skills necessary to decipher political cartoons from the past may have been insufficient to the task at hand. Conclusions drawn from the information collected in these interviews focus on decreasing the discrepancy between the two forms of visual material by taking steps that include considerable work on the part of the teacher and student to improve upon the background content knowledge and processing skills necessary to consistently decipher the information contained within the political cartoons. Such steps may prove to be impractical given the nature of the already jam-packed curriculums and time-strapped teachers that populate today's Social Studies classrooms. Additional studies would be necessary to determine if the experiences viewed here are common to those encountered in other parts of the nation or if they are indeed uniquely characteristic of this one situation. Accordingly, the results of those additional studies would possibly initiate a reevaluation of the conclusions drawn here.

Abstract:
Tourism has been utilising global biodiversity for a relatively long time. In many countries, such as Finland and South Africa, biodiversity forms an increasingly important resource for tourism. The mutual and sometimes conflicting relation between biodiversity and tourism is clearly evident in conservation areas. The importance of National Parks, for example, is highlighted by the protection and conservation of biodiversity through ecotourism to retain visitors while increasing experiences: it is apparent that a more diverse and unique destination would have greater appeal to all visitors. However, the increasing interest also creates impacts to environment, visitor‟s experiences and management needs. This research examines and determines the tangible level of importance of biodiversity in Oulanka National Park in Finland compared to Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa with the added effects on visitor experiences. Apart from the tangible level, this research also examines the affects of biodiversity richness on visitor experiences and perceptions regarding nature management regulations at Oulanka and Golden Gate. This is determined through various biodiversity attributes with visitors specifying the importance regarding the richness of plants, habitats, wildlife, birdlife and unspoilt nature and biodiversity hotspots. More than three quarters of respondents specified that their relationships regarding biodiversity and experiences are strongly connected thereby indicating the role and importance of biodiversity in Oulanka National Park and Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Findings also illustrate respondents‟ views on nature management regulations of the national parks and together with the known role of biodiversity, suggest the way forward for Oulanka and Golden Gate through ecotourism and a Biodiversity Tourism Management Guidelines (BTMG) framework.

This thesis explores solo performance in New Zealand. That solo performance has been widely used in New Zealand's relatively brief theatre history is usually ascribed to the economy, manoeuvrability and adaptability of the form - common reasons for the popularity of solo performance elsewhere as well. But this thesis considers solo performance as a kind of theatre that has been suited to New Zealand in a distinctive way. In particular, I argue that solo performance has emerged on the margins of mainstream theatre in New Zealand as a means of actively engaging with a sense of isolation that typifies the post-colonial New Zealand experience. The ability of the solo performance to move between remote rural settlements and urban centres has connected these New Zealand communities in a way that is unusual for theatre in New Zealand. Furthermore, a solo performer speaking directly to an audience about the experience of living in New Zealand allows for an intimate interaction with a traditionally stoic and laconic masculine society. In this thesis, I make a case for three solo performances where it is possible to see, in the representation of a search for what it means to be a New Zealander, a theatrical contribution to nation-building: The End of the Golden Weather (1959), Coaltown Blues (1984) and Michael James Manaia (1991). However, in a subsequent chapter, I look at solo performances in New Zealand that might better be understood within global movements such as feminism and multiculturalism. I argue that this shift has depleted the power that the form once held to comment upon New Zealand identity and to assist in the search for national identity. I conclude the thesis by considering how ongoing theatre practice may be informed by the experience of solo performance in New Zealand.

Various types of film festivals flourishing in Taiwan, and the competition in film festivals have become increasingly fierce. Past studies have shown that customer loyalty will have high and positive purchasing behavior, hence, the purposes of this study were to explore the Audience Loyalty of Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (TGHFF), based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and Involvement. This study was focused on Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (TGHFF), which is the largest film festival in Taiwan. Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) theorizes that individuals’ behavioral intention affected by their attitude, subject norm, and perceived behavioral control. And for Involvement, this study focused on the application of leisure involvement. Measuring the degree of leisure involvement by psychology and behavioral dimensions, to examine consumer attitudes loyalty and behavioral loyalty (Traylor, 1981; Zaichkowsky, 1985). This study adopted a quantitative research method using questionnaires to collect data from the audiences of TGHFF. The survey was implemented to 389 participants, and total of 379 valid questionnaires were collected with validation rate of 97.43%. The data were analyzed by methods including descriptive statistics, reliability analysis and regression analysis. The regression analysis results indicated that except subjective norms involvement-importance and screening attendance, all the independent variables had a significant and positive effect on loyalty. As for the theory of planned behavior, the audiences’ loyalty positively affected by their attitude and perceived behavioral control. As for the audiences’ involvement, the loyalty was positively affected by the their pleasure, self-expression, lifestyle centrality, the amount of film festivals they attend, years of seniority and experience in film festivals, if they are getting the membership of TGHFF, and if they are fans or followers of TGHFF’s social media. The result showed that attitude and involvement-pleasure should be the primarily focuses in improving audiences’ loyalty. Based on these significant findings, researcher provides some suggestions for management and marketing.

There has been dissatisfaction over some court rulings among lay people in Japan. In this thesis I propose a model to explain the discrepancies between legal experts and lay people. Chapter 1 presents the purpose of this thesis, and an overview of the model called the Linguistic Legal Model. Chapter 2 shows the Japanese legal system including a new lay-participation system, the mixed court system. Chapter 3 provides background information on Japanese trademark issues. In Chapter 4 and 5, the Linguistic Legal Model is explored with Layer Analysis and Register Analysis. For Layer Analysis in Chapter 4, the notion of layering is presented from a linguistic perspective whereas legal reasoning is discussed from the notion of different modes of thought. Register Analysis in Chapter 5 is discussed in terms of genre and register. Japanese legal language is examined together with English legal language. In Chapter 6 and 7 I examine trademark cases. The Golden Horse case in Chapter 6 presents court’s judgment of the likelihood of confusion which is in common with that of lay people. However, it is argued that the thought process in the legal judgment court was not convincing. In Chapter 7, the Snack Chanel case portrays a judgment characteristic of the legal layer, which is quite different from the common sense of lay people. This discrepancy is explained from the perspective of different layers and different modes of thought. Chapter 8 concludes with a brief summary of this thesis.

For art cinema fans of Taiwan, Golden Horse Film Festival just like a sacred Feast, fans gathered together every year, that increasingly the forces of faith in the ritual. This study attempts to follow the "pilgrimage" view, to imagine that Golden Horse Film Festival audience as the cult followers, their identity is not just the audience or consumers, but a participants. This study is divided into three stages. First is the archive research of Golden Horse Film Festival for the thirty years (1980~2009). Second is the festival audience questionnaire survey and participant observation, to understand the fans viewing behavior. The third stage is life history interviews. The study found that the “ritual” or “cult” concept of Golden Horse Film Festival mainly from the three points: the timing, the result of annual holidays, like the "cyclical" and created a sense of ritual; in the space, for film and fans of the "gather" of the ritual to create a sense; In addition to these two, the religious admiration to achieve the standard class is bound to also have "sacred" concept, its sacred sense is from master's work in the film, brought the worship mentality. For fans of pilgrims journey, the study quoted by three fan’s life history, describes the various generations of 20,30,40 years old. Then according to a large number of interviews, field observations and findings of the survey, with the ritual process model depicts a single journey and the career of the cinephiles. In a single part of the journey, we can divided into "pre-festival period", "Film Festival Period" and "post-festival period". Part in a career of the cinephiles can be divided into "pre-cinephile stage", "cinephile stage" and "post-cinephile stage", the main differences between the three is based on the film's importance, degree of obsession and expendable as the division of standard.

In the film festivals with different themes in Taiwan, how to use the existing resources to attract audience support, give the audience a clear and significant image of the exhibition, and at the same time be separated from other film festivals? The key is the audience's construction of the festival brand. This study explores the implementation of the Taiwan Theme Film Festival-Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival from the Perspecture of Brand Equity. Through researching and understanding of the key factors of the operation status and audience satisfaction of Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival, and compares the performance of the film curatorial team and the audience to the implementation of the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival. Is there a significant difference in performance perception? This research method is based on case studies and quantitative research. The case study method utilizes literature analysis and in-depth interviews with relevant personnel of the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee to draw a focus on the brand equity of the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival. The questionnaires were sampled simultaneously, and the Kano two-dimensional quality model was used for quantitative analysis. A total of 315 valid questionnaires were used. The research findings are as follows: A.From the point of view of the film curatorial team, it is known that the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival has different strategies for different ethnic groups and has clear brand management objectives. B.From the perspective of the audience, the key factors to enhance the satisfaction of the film festival are the visual design of the film festival, the fare, the film list, the theme atmosphere, and the experience activities; there is no feeling for the equipment and environment where the film is launched. C.From the perspecture of brand equity, we explore the effect of the film curatorial team and audiences on the implementation of the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival. The difference is the hardware equipment, surrounding products, and the association features of the festival; the same is the visual design of the exhibition, fares, service personnel, and external image. D.Applying Kano's two-dimensional quality model requires in-depth interviews to be applied to the brand management of the film festival, and to find out the strategic suggestions for resource allocation, so that the curatorial team can expect more accurate and realistic comparison with the audience. In the competition of many film festivals in Taiwan, accurate brand management has become the key to the elimination of the film festival. This study attempts to clarify the balance between the film curatorial team and the audience's needs to help the future film curatorial team to precede their brand management. The following four research recommendations are provided for future reference by relevant units. A.Confirm the resource input order of each quadrant in the customer satisfaction coefficient and continue to investigate and analyze. B.Continuously extend the link between activities and cross-industry cooperation to strengthen the unique Film Festival brand image. C.Taking a cautious view of the impact caused by social media, in addition to maintaining space for interaction with the audience, it is necessary to try different propaganda channels to expand the stratosphere. D.Review brands with consistent brand management strategies at any time to present the consistency of the brand.

Golden Horse Awards have been running for 50 years old, and past government-led has gradually turned into the most important Chinese-speaking film awards in the world. By the Best Picture over the years, it is difficult to determine that Golden Horse Awards favor on commercial film or artistic film. There are new film awards grow up in global market, it will be an important issue that Golden Horse Awards have to maintain her superiority, and seeking breakthrough status. Studying the historical literature of Golden Horse Awards hopes to trace the variation of the awards, and use "author theory" to explore the position fixing of Golden Horse Awards. This thesis chose seven works of the best pictures with "the author theory of Sarris" as the basis from the awards of last decade. According to " Mise-en-Scene " of skill in the author theory of Sarris, I try to analyze the films style, and confirm whether Golden Horse award advocate of author theory or not. In my study, it is taken four forms of Mise-en-Scene " action arrangement ", " scenery and props "," composition mode " and " frame the way things were taken ", to analyze this issue. Then the conclusion is Golden Horse Award prefers to the film of author theory style. I find out that" Kekexili: Mountain Patrol " , " I Can't Live Without You" , " Beijing Blues" and " Ilo Ilo", these films focus on social issues and tend to Documentary realistic style. Also the scripts are written by the directors, and those films follow the rule of author theory. " Kung Fu Hustle" is a fictional story, and still keep the sense of humor from director ; " Lust, Caution " and " The Warlords" are adapted from the novel, and the filming techniques convey the directors human care. Thereby, the demonstrations on the seven films are author theory style on the movie. Suggestion for the future research, they can expand the object to the other Golden Horse Award categories, as well as investigate movies from some theories of cultural phenomenon.

Golden Case Debugging scenario is one of the software debugging method to verify the correctness in software development and debugging. This scenario usually happens in a software which it has a stable version (Golden Case) and faces feature extend and improve continuously. This method tests a developing version software with stable version software. Two software version inputs the same data and observe output of two versions manually to see the developing version being tested whether correctly implemented or debugged. Golden Case Debugging is frequently being used in the Electronic Design Automation [1] (EDA) software series. EDA series software faces many software engineering problem including maintenance and expansion. Because the software scale is very massive and complex. EDA series software are designed to assist hardware engineer to design more and more complex Integrated Circuit. EDA series software programmer will encounter large amount of polygon data where it contains the shape, size and location related data inside data structure. EDA software programmer can benefit from xDIVA [2] to visualize these data, mapping them to the 3D space to help programmer get better understanding and assist the debugging process. In this thesis, we propose to enhance the function of xDIVA to support Golden Case Debugging. Programmer can use it to capture the software states in a specific runtime between different software version, then visualize them in xDIVA 3D space to see the difference between two states. Also we analyzed several different case of visualized data structure by xDIVA. To provide the comparison function for show the difference between visualization result. Programmer can benefit from these feature to find error inside software contains complex data structure quickly.

In the winter of 1895, the world''s first movie was shown in a coffee shop in Paris, France. This was the first publicly available commercial broadcast by way of ticket sales. From that moment, France became the birthplace of the movie, and spared no effort in the development of film culture. Even in the government, those institutions all always contribute themselves to promote international cultural exchange. Under the trend in globalization, France still has a place in the world. In the first part of this thesis, in order to better understand film is the soft power of France, and the governments support of film development, we will focus on the origin of film and observe how France resists the cultural hegemony of the United States. In the second part, we will investigate the differences between French and Taiwanese film institutions. In the last part, we will use the Cannes Film Festival and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival as the examples to understand the underlying elements of the film festival and the interaction between international films. Finally, we believe that understanding this will offer Taiwan a direction in long-term and help create opportunities for international cooperation.

We analyse takeovers in an industry with bilateral capital‐linked firms in cross partial ownership (CPO). Before merger, CPO reduces the profitability of involved firms, confirming the “outsider effect.” However, the impact of CPO upon merger profitability is two‐sided in a Cournot setting. CPO, by cointegrating profits, increases output collusion leading to anticompetitive effects with facilitated mergers in most cases. Nonetheless, a protective threshold exists for which CPO arrangements can reduce the incentives for hostile takeovers. This has potentially significant regulatory implications. An illustrative example showcases the potential relevance of CPO as a defence against hostile takeovers across different industries.

Abstract:
The exponential growth of the gambling industry in South Africa has been the consequence of liberalized gambling laws. Casinos that were previously restricted to the homeland regions of the country have now become a common urban phenomenon that is easily accessible. Casino developments are still at an early stage of development, but the wide-scale consumption and popularity of the product has generated numerous debates over the cost and benefits associated with the industry. Whilst proponents of casino developments tend to emphasize the economic benefits, the opponents highlight the inevitable social costs, generated by the industry. The aim of this study is to determine the social and economic impacts of the Sugar Mill Casino and the Golden Horse Casino on the Mount Edgecombe and Pietermaritzburg communities respectively. These impacts have been assessed by making use of both quantitative and qualitative data sources. The findings suggests that both the Golden Horse Casino and the Sugar Mill Casino have afforded their respective communities economic benefits and growth opportunities in the form of firstly, the initial capital investment of the casinos, and secondly, by the subsequent revenues generated by the industry. However, the industry has also generated social costs that have been encountered mainly by those individuals who do not have control over their gambling practices, and are thus classified as problem gamblers. Problem gambling tendencies result in a host of psychological, financial and physical repercussions that are manifested at a personal and interpersonal level. If the casino gambling industry is expected to be of any benefit to the Pietermaritzburg and Mount Edgecombe regions, the economic gains of the industry have to be maximized whilst ensuring that the negative social cost remain minimal. Balancing these impacts remains imperative to the mutual sustainability of the casinos and their respective communities.

This research project consists of two parts of two different objectives. In part I, the levels of antibody against Japanese encephalitis virus in equine serum were determined by both PRNT(plaque reduction neutralization test) and ELISA. The results of PRNT and ELISA were then compared and the relation was studied. In part II, two cases of acute equine Japanese encephalitis were diagnosed. Clinical signs, hematology, pathological exam, and the result of RT-PCR, confirmed that these two horses were definitely infected with equine Japanese encephalitis virus. Part I The horse back riding population has increased in the last four years resulting in more and more horses were imported from Europe and America to Taiwan. In the past few years, there were several reported cases of horses that were suspected of Japanese encephalitis infection. The clinical signs ranged from mild fever to staggering. The prognosis of these cases were poor and frequently resulted in death. Majority of horses in Taiwan were not immunized with Japanese encephalitis vaccine. Horses infected with Japanese encephalitis virus initially did not show clinical signs, but once became viremia and showed neurological signs, the mortality rate was high. There were no reported cases of equine Japanese encephalitis in Taiwan. This study surveyed the Japanese encephalitis antibody distribution in different areas of Taiwan. PRNT and ELISA were used to measure the titer and the results were compared. Feasibility of using ELISA to determine the antibody was studied by comparing it results with accepted procedure, PRNT. ELISA has high specificity and sensitivity and would be a good procedure for massive large scale screening. One hundred twenty-nine horse serum samples were obtained from five horse farms in three parts of Taiwan between June and September of 1999. The results showed that 91.43% of non-immunized horses had antibody. With the exception of one hose, twenty-eight newly imported horses didn’t have antibody. All ten horses in middle part of Taiwan had significantly increased antibody in one week following one immunization. In northern Taiwan, five of twenty-one horses did not have detectable antibody two-month after immunization. Antibody of five horses had negative titer in the northern part of Taiwan. All non-immunized horses in southern Taiwan had positive antibody titer, suggesting that horses in the temperate zone of south were more likely subjected to mosquito bites. The newly imported horses and those local horses that show seronegative antibody, would be most susceptible to infection. In order to effectively stimulate immune response and protective effect, at lest two immunizations of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine were recommended. In serological test, the ELISA titer test correlated to PRNT (r=0.89) and the specificity of ELISA was 100%, and sensitivity was 98.9%. Therefore, results indicated that ELISA is a prefer method due to its rapid, sensitive and specificity and could be used for seroepidemiologic first screening. Part II Two cases of equine encephalitis were examined and confirmed in this study. In the first case, an one-year old foal born in Taiwan showed clinical signs of bruxism, difficulty in swallowing, incoordination, staggering and falling, radial paralysis, circling, profuse sweating and muscle trembling. It died at the seventh day after the appearance of clinical signs. The second case was observed in a mature horse imported from New Zealand on April 2000. The clinical signs were mild fever, anorexia, sweating and compulsive walking, and the horse couldn’t bypass the stumbling block. The horse died at the fifth day. Hematological examination showed lymphapenia and monocytosis. The values of blood chemistry were normal. Cerebrospinal fluid of the two horses was xanthochromic. Base on the history, clinical sign and hematology examination, the initial diagnosis was equine virus encephalitis. Equine virus encephalitis could by caused by equine Japanese encephalitis, eastern equine encephalitis, western equine encephalitis, and Venezuelan equine encephalitis. There was need to conduct differentiate diagnosis. According to the geography of Taiwan and the history and clinical signs of the two horses, the initial diagnosis was equine Japanese encephalitis. In the laboratory findings, there were Japanese encephalitis virus neutralized antibody in these two horses (1:37 in horse 1, and 1:21 in horse 2) in cerebrospinal fluid. The significant neurological signs indicated that the virus might have invaded the central nervous system. Pathological examination showed perivascular cuffing, inflammatory cell infiltration and gliosis in the cerebrum, cerebellum, pons, and brain stem of the two horses. Based on the positive detection of Japanese encephalitis virus RNA in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue by RT-PCR, these two horses were definitely diagnosed to have equine Japanese encephalitis.

Taiwan experiences a subtropical climate, giving a suitable growing environment for pineapple plantation. Dashu district in Kaohsiung city has a long history of pineapple plantation. Among varieties, the “Tainung No. 17:Golden Diamond Pineapple” occupies an important place because of its smooth texture, and sweet flavor that obtain a high customer acceptance. In recent years, although it has been widely taken as specialty fillings among Taiwanese pastry shops, the stereotypical image with fame of the “Taiwanese Golden Brick” has limited its appearance: square and rectangle forms and its pastry dough production methods. It has turned out that appearance of merchandises looks so alike that there has been no outstanding focus for neophiliac consumers in Taiwan. “Fine feathers make fine birds.” For pastry filling, the appearance, the shape are its feather. Its basic form comes from a visual centered design, amalgamated by five senses of visual design: intercommunication and interfusion of visual, hearing, tactile, smelling, tasting senses of human being, which is a center value within contemporary design. Rated 87% of human senses, visual perception is an important key to attract consumers because it reacts to overall appearance design. That is the reason why it is crucial that designers ought to have the knowledge in terms of shaping factors, consequently express the design concepts with any materials, skills, and methods by following their inclinations. This creation study is based on the creation of pineapple cake as topic, in application of relevant materials from field research, literature review, and case study as history basis, based on the concept of food culture thinking through food redesign. This study utilizes shaping, colors, and quality factors in “five senses of appearance design” as bases. Colored with natural ingredients, Chinese style wheat flour processing oil dough is used during production process, round shaped for pineapple fillings, in order to express “perfection” and “prosperity” – a new image of pineapple cake – representing the auspicious meanings in Chinese culture. This creation aims to highlight the connotation and the difference of pineapple cakes forwardly to meet the purposes of Chinese etiquette and custom of life, traditional festivals, religious beliefs and souvenirs or gifts. The intercommunication between creators, their works, and consumers would not matter until this experience is perceived. This creation study completes a series of pineapple cakes, interpreting creation concept and connotation by actual “scenario experience”, provided with merchandise references, in order to add values to Taiwanese pineapple cakes. Through this creation, it is hoped to seek more possibilities of design application between “food cultural thinking” and “five senses experience” with the following researchers in terms of Taiwanese pineapple cake investigation and creation design. It is also hoped to keep advantages of pineapple cakes on cultural sustainable development scale. The propositions in this creation study are centered on providing references to those following researchers.

Under the impact of industrial transformation and Taiwan’s WTO accession, Jing Liao Community at Tainan is known as the “Golden Granary” in rice planting. However, the documentary film “Let It Be” caused a huge sensation in 2005, which transformed this community into tourism development. Based on the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) and Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP), this research established the indicators of sustainable development in rural tourism for Jing Liao Community at Tainan, through the comprehensive suggestions collected from 12 experts in the industry, academia and government organizations. Meanwhile, the importance of local food in rural tourism development was also fully discussed. After the FDM for two rounds, 15 evaluation indicators from the 4 main dimensions were generalized. Afterwards, the first three important indicators were prioritized by the results of FAHP: indicator “unique architecture” in the dimension of historical and cultural characteristics, indicator “agricultural products” in the dimension of local food and rural meal, as well as indicator “the supply of rural meal” in the dimension of local food and rural meal. These findings could be the reference of community development planning for government and industry. Furthermore, the dimension of local food and rural meal showed its importance in two of the three indicators, which encourages further researches.

Abstract Architecture is considered the locomotive of an economy. According to Chen Jin-tzi, convener of the Chinese Architectural Golden Stone Award Contest Advisory Board, real estate is an important asset for a county and its citizens and it can reflect the prosperity and social and economic development of a certain country or a town. Therefore the development of real estate depends on the quality of a nation’s social and economic status, its environmental development policies and urban development programs. The business depends on the system of real estate industry and the mindset of consumers. The success of the industry matters to the investment environment and a right mind. In recent years, real estate business has encountered various problems including the safety of construction sites, the calculation of ping, Taiwanese measurement of space area, and disputes over transactions based on false sales information. At the time, a positive encouragement can really be helpful in boosting the overall quality of the industry. The Chinese Architectural Golden Stone Award is a joint effort of the government, the academic and the industry, aimed to give some new thoughts and life to the architectural industry. With the effort of the Chinese Architectural Golden Stone Award Contest Advisory Board, the event is now in its 13th years and has gone through hardship along the way, including the 921 earthquake, changes of domestic policies and etc. Despite the economy, the award continues its work and earns the respect as the respectable, leading award of architectural industry in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. Among all architectural awards in Taiwan, the Chinese Architectural Golden Stone award is the most professional event and the indicative one. I believe that the award adopts some of the elements of the integrated marketing theory. Therefore, the Chinese Architectural Golden Stone award is able to sustain and thrive because it exercises the combination of theory and practice. In analyzing the process of organizing the Chinese Architectural Golden Stone award, I’ve come to realize the integrated marketing theory into reality. What’s more important is that I am able to examine the experience for future improvement and innovation. Hopefully the thesis can provide a glance for future organizerss and the public so when they are to organize similar events they can fully fuse the features of integrated marketing communication and its advantages, through a complete marketing plan, to make the utmost of the event.

With the progress of the times, more and more museums are taking revolutionary strategies to improve their service quality for the purpose of meeting customers’ needs. Therefore, marketing plays a crucial role in the management of modern museums. The museums can operate sustainably only through providing satisfactory services. Formosan Golden Bat’s Home is the main arena of this research. The researcher of this study makes a thorough literature review to explore the various definition and functions of museums, then adopts this revolutionary definition – an ecomuseum – to define Formosan Golden Bat’s Home as an ‘ecomuseum’. Based on the steps of museum marketing strategies, the researcher first conducts marketing researches through interview to gain the insights of the operation of Formosan Golden Bat’s Home as well as its interal and external marketing environment. Second, the researcher follows the target marketing STP steps to interview and collect information, then integrate it with marketing strategies 5P to design questionnaire. The questionnaire is answered by the visitors of Formosan Golden Bat’s Home. By collecting and analyzing the questionnaire, the researcher has a clear picture of the visitors’ combination and needs. This information is valuable for the researcher to make proper marketing segmentation and identify target audience. Finally, the researcher design the most appropriate marketing mix for different audience segmentation respectively. The research indicates that in terms of product, the vivid image of the theme of bats is highly valued. In terms of price, seeking financial resources from the government is the emphasis. In terms of place, Formosan Golden Bat’s Home is located in a remote village where is regarded as a suitable habitat for bats. In terms of promotion, the most widely acceptable way is to organize more biological conservation activities or related camps. In terms of people, the operation model is inclined to strengthen the cooperation with local community, educate and train locals to become bat conservation volunteers. With this study, the researcher hopes to provide useful information to help Formosan Golden Bat’s Home in planning marketing strategies. Through the cooperation among school, local community and civil organizations, we hope to provide the audience with the most satisfactory service and make Formosan Golden Bat’s Home a natural tour venue serving multiple functions in education, conservation and community building.

Convenience chain stores are a very successful industry in Taiwan. Our surveys indicate that convenience stores located in golden real-estates greatly outperforms typical stores in terms of revenues and profits. Therefore, how to keep a long-term leasing contract with real-estate owners of golden shops is very important to convenience chain stores. To achieve this aim, this research proposes a bonus-based leasing strategy and investigates how to identify the optimum alternative in implementing this strategy. The idea of bonus-based leasing decomposes the leasing payment into two parts. One part is a fixed amount, which is a determined by a percentage (0≤a≤1) of the market price. The other part is a variable amount, which is determined by a percentage (0≤b≤1) of the leasee’s revenue. Such a leasing strategy is intended to share the profit of leasee with the leaser in order to keep a long-term contract. This idea works well if the leasee’s revenue is good or better than expectation. However, while the leasee’s revenue is substantially lower than expectation, the leaser shall have an option to terminate the contract. That is, if the actual renting income is lower than a particular percentage (0≤γ≤1) of the expected renting income, the leaser could terminate the contract by paying a penalty fee (P). Therefore, a leasing alternative based on the bonus-based leasing strategy can be represented by a portfolio(a,b,γ,P). This research assumes that the lessers and the leasee are rational decision makers in an information symmetric scenario. We develop a mathematical model to compute the probability that a lesser accepts a leasing alternative(a,b,γ,P) and the leasee’s expected profit. Based on the model, we use a software tool Mathematica to search an optimum leasing alternative, which will appear to be optimum to both the leasee and the leasers. The proposed leasing strategy and optimized implementation model shall effectively help the convenience store chains become more competitive by keeping long-term leasing contract in golden shops.

The study is to understand why a group of over fourty-year-old “old brothers” who lose their physical ability with age would come to the NTNU court for playing basketball regularly every Wednesday evening. The unbalance of the physical and psychological conflicts is the thematic question. The study being based on Abraham H. Maslow’s need-hierarchy theory as well as the athletes’ physical experience and the new experience of the new world created by the basketball court, the research method is to interview ten regular Old Horse members through the in-depth interviews in order to explore the real causes of their unexhausted happiness. The researcher also goes to the court every week to do the participant observation to understand what the physical experience of the old brothers is. The findings are as follows. The Old Horse players get mostly the negative physical experience, and therefore have many changes to cope with the physical degradation. Physical exercise, making friends, life attitude, soothing pressure, sense of achievement, and controlling the rhythm in the body are all the causes of the old brothers to attend the game regularly. Players can even recharge the energy and exchange the dreams among themselves on the basketball court. The NTNU court becomes the peculiar space to gather the basketball buffs, to share the glory and even to reform the young players. The only pity is that some of the old bothers cannot keep on attending the game because of aging or busy work. As a consequesnce, at the end of the study, the researcher proposes the reflections and encourages himself by the old brothers’ never forgetting the original passion for basketball in the following twenty years later.

Different from TV commercials, cinema commercials have its own process on upfront concept of communication, material production and post-production monitoring. From the broadcasting point of view, there is no AC Nielsen rating like TV commercials to be analyzed for advertisers. It takes another means to communicate with the advertisers. For instance, it is necessary to make them understand that, even with the same materials, one would get vastly different perception from cinema and home TV settings. This different perception would then have different advertising efficiency. In cinema commercial's production process, it takes specialty visual company to process the material, and then through specialty audio company to produce films that will then be suitable for cinema's viewing. Currently, the leading visual company in Taiwan is "Taipei Postproduction". They are the only company capable of developing films and post-filming treatment of the material. The audio part is dominated by "3H Sound Studio Ltd." - the company of the frequent-winner of Golden Horse awards - Mr. Tu Duu Chih. Respectively, for the monitoring side, because of copyright regulation, it can not be done by video- or picture-taking in a movie theatre. It is not possible to offer evidence of showing to the advertiser. That is why theatre commercial dealer and theatre owner would offer "theatres commercial tickets" to advertisers so they can view their commercial is indeed shown, and, of course free enjoyment of the featured movie. In this unique field, professional skill and process are essential elements. Professional skill in the field means the total understanding of how the cinema commercial is dealt in Taiwan. The familiarity of characteristics of all cinemas on the island , their customer basis, the popularity of coming new films and the estimation of optimal purchasing of showing time - are all necessary skill for an agent for cinema advertisement. As for the process, it means that in using materials, either its sound or sight, it has to be combined and adjusted to the satisfaction of advertisers before it can be put on the show. If there is anything to be adjusted, or if the advertiser wants a new version, the modification should follow the process to make the modification on the portion that requires the change. This paper utilizes a technical report format to present the content. It attempts to describe the process in which the technical and practical aspects of raw material and concept are processed into theatre advertisement, in both the production and showing stages. With a case-study on Heineken Beer, problems and their solutions pre-, during and post production stages are discussed, analyzed and evaluated. The evaluation is carried out based on both quality and quantity performance. The quality is scored by the effectiveness of showing which in turn is influenced by environment and characteristics of theatre. The quantity is scored by comparing the prediction of viewers before showing, and the actual viewing number. The actual viewing number is meaningfully calculated by the ticket sale, days of showing and casts. Cinema advertisement is inevitably going to be one of the media that consumer will enjoy the most among interactive advertisements. In this era of inflation, people need to forget the hard time even just for a brief time. This report offers the cinemas advertisement process and case sharing. Hopefully it will provide reference and information as cinema’s advertisement in the future.
