Full text
Abstract:
Currently, wood waste in the form of a dissected crown on the ground and the root fraction of the tree's biomass in the ground remain in felling areas, becoming potentially dangerous combustible materials in the event of forest fires, as well as obstacles to reforestation activities, and possible foci of infections. Shredding wood waste into wood chips will solve the problem of their disposal by using fuel chips as an additional source of heat energy. In the present work, the influence of design and operational parameters of milling machines with a modernized hydraulic system and equipped with active working bodies on the process of shredding wood waste is established. The annual economic effect from the introduction of the developed complex of wood waste shredding machines and economic indicators from the use of fuel chips are given. This publication is intended for undergraduates and postgraduates engaged in scientific research in the field of forestry mechanization.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Energy and Society offers a timely and much-needed synthesis of recent developments in sociological analysis of energy-society relations, representing a wide breadth of contributors in sociology and related disciplines from across the globe. Regional case studies of different energy resources are featured, as are the roles of politics, markets, technology, social movements, and consumers, all contributing to a complex systems perspective on the uncertain future of energy-society relations. The volume is divided into seven sections. Section One includes chapters that highlight key contemporary dynamics and theoretical contributions in this field of scholarship. Following this is a section showcasing structural perspectives on energy-society relations, including chapters describing the persistent material and geopolitical relevance of fossil fuels. Section Three highlights research on consumers and consumption processes, while Section Four draws attention to emerging research on the inequitable distribution of energy access, and energy poverty. Section Five includes chapters that focus on the influence of publics and civil society in contemporary energy-society relations. Section Six offers chapters that focus on current trends in energy politics, and finally, in the concluding section we offer a selection of chapters that highlight some emerging trends that may have potential to generate—or constrain—significant shifts in energy-society relationships. While offering a diversity of perspectives and empirical research, contributors to this volume agree on a number of key issues that offer important insights into the future of energy-society relations, including the growing instability imposed by fossil-fuel dependence, and challenges and innovations associated with a renewable energy transition.

Klepper, Joerg. Glut1 Deficiency and the Ketogenic Diets. Edited by Eric H. Kossoff. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190497996.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Glucose is the essential fuel for the brain. Transport into brain is exclusively mediated by the facilitative glucose transporter Glut1. Glut1 deficiency results in a “brain energy crisis,” causing global developmental delay, epilepsy, and complex movement disorders including paroxysmal nonepileptic events. Early-onset absence epilepsy, paroxysmal exertion-induced dystonia, and stomatin-deficient cryohydrocytosis have been recognized as variants. Diagnosis is based on phenotype, isolated low CSF glucose, and mutations in the SLC2A1 gene. The condition is treated effectively by classical ketogenic diets providing ketones as an alternative fuel for the brain. The modified Atkins diet in adolescents and adults improves palatability and compliance at the expense of lower ketosis. Dietary treatment is continued into adolescence to meet the energy demand of the developing brain, raising concerns about long-term adverse effects. Current fields of research include novel compounds such as ketoesters and genetic approaches in Glut1-deficient mice as potential treatment options.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the key contributions offered by the authors of the present volume and calls on social scientists to open up the many black boxes that may prevent further understanding of complex energy-society systems, and to use those insights in energy planning. It discusses some of the book’s major themes with respect to energy supply and demand, focusing on the pressures and opportunities for continued development of fossil-fuel resources, the agreement among authors that renewable energy will not be a panacea, the link between energy poverty and climate justice, and the overriding tendency to attribute responsibility for changing energy consumption to middle-class families by voluntary means. The chapter also considers the influence of shifts in supply and demand on markets, politics, and governance, along with the implications of technological optimism for energy-society relations.

Abstract:
Glut1 Deficiency (Glut1D, OMIM #606777) is caused by impaired glucose transport into the brain. The resulting cerebral “energy crisis” causes intractable seizures, developmental delay, and a complex movement disorder. The diagnosis is based on clinical features, low CSF glucose and/or mutations in the SLC2A1 gene. Paroxysmal exertion-induced dystonia (PED) and hereditary cryohydrocytosis have been described as allelic variants. Adults are increasingly being recognized through family pedigrees. The condition is effectively treatable by mimicking the metabolic state of fasting. High-fat carbohydrate-restricted ketogenic diets generate ketones that serve as an alternative fuel for the brain. In adults with Glut1D, novel modified ketogenic diets can be used, allowing more carbohydrates and greater palatability and compliance.

Prud'homme, Alex. Hydrofracking. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/wentk/9780199311262.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Constantly in the news and the subject of much public debate, fracking, as it is known for short, is one of the most promising yet controversial methods of extracting natural gas and oil. Today, 90 percent of natural gas wells use fracking. Though highly effective, the process-which fractures rock with pressurized fluid-has been criticized for polluting land, air, and water, and endangering human health. A timely addition to Oxford's What Everyone Needs to Know series, Hydrofracking tackles this contentious topic, exploring both sides of the debate and providing a clear guide to the science underlying the technique. In concise question-and-answer format, Alex Prud'homme cuts through the maze of opinions and rhetoric to uncover key points, from the economic and political benefits of fracking to the health dangers and negative effects on the environment. Prud'homme offers clear answers to a range of fundamental questions, including: What is fracking fluid? How does it impact water supplies? Who regulates the industry? How much recoverable natural gas exists in the U.S.? What new innovations are on the horizon? Supporters as diverse as President Obama and the conservative billionaire T. Boone Pickens have promoted natural gas as a clean, "21st-century" fuel that will reduce global warming, create jobs, and provide tax revenues, but concerns remain, with environmental activists like Bill McKibben and others leading protests to put an end to fracking as a means of obtaining alternative energy. Prud'homme considers ways to improve methods in the short-term, while also exploring the possibility of transitioning to more sustainable resources-wind, solar, tidal, and perhaps nuclear power-for the long term. Written for general readers, Hydrofracking clearly explains both the complex science of fracking and the equally complex political and economic issues that surround it, giving readers all the information they need to understand what will no doubt remain a contentious issue for years to come.

Smil, Vaclav. Grand Transitions. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190060664.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The modern world was created through the combination and complex interactions of five grand transitions. First, the demographic transition changed the total numbers, dynamics, structure, and residential pattern of populations. The agricultural and dietary transition led to the emergence of highly productive cropping and animal husbandry (subsidized by fossil energies and electricity), a change that eliminated famines, reduced malnutrition, and improved the health of populations but also resulted in enormous food waste and had many environmental consequences. The energy transition brought the world from traditional biomass fuels and human and animal labor to fossil fuel, ever more efficient electricity, lights, and motors, all of which transformed both agricultural and industrial production and enabled mass-scale mobility and instant communication. Economic transition has been marked by relatively high growth rates of total national and global product, by fundamental structural transformation (from farming to industries to services), and by an increasing share of humanity living in affluent societies, enjoying unprecedented quality of life. These transitions have made many intensifying demands on the environment, resulting in ecosystemic degradation, loss of biodiversity, pollution, and eventually change on the planetary level, with global warming being the most worrisome development. This book traces the genesis of these transitions, their interactions and complicated progress as well as their outcomes and impacts, explaining how the modern world was made—and then offers a forward-thinking examination of some key unfolding transitions and appraising their challenges and possible results.
