Tolentino-Serrano, Brandon. "In the Eye of the Storm: Houston after Hurricane Harvey." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/203.

Full text
Abstract:
Situated in one of the wettest climates in America, Houston, TX has had a long history of heavy rains and unprecedented floods. Unfortunately, floods have become more common over the last few decades as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of hurricanes around the globe. To complicate matters further, Houston has quickly sprawled to accommodate over 2.5 billion people. Rapid urbanization has rendered the landscape even more susceptible to floods through excess concretization and watershed disturbance. This thesis traces the history of the Bayou City in relation to the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. By mapping out the original neighborhoods and the current demographics of the city, I argue that low-income and minority groups have been systematically forced into higher-risk floodplains via prejudice housing practices. Furthermore, I explore the roles of the National Insurance Flood Program (NIFP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the rebuilding of the city following Harvey, and I detail the sudden spike in unsheltered homeless people across the region. The thesis closes by critiquing projects that have been proposed for the future well-being of Houston (i.e. reservoir remediation, conveyance projects, coastal dykes, etc.). Evidently, local and outside experts across fields and organizations need to cooperate to determine the immediate and specific needs of neighborhoods and people across the city of Houston.

Binder, Heidi A. "Cultural fluency in the eye of the storm : a mediation case study." Scholarly Commons, 2012. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/800.

Full text
Abstract:
The eye of the storm is the calm center amidst chaos where, metaphorically speaking, mediators often begin their work. Recent research has advocated for a more holistic, relational, culturally inclusive approach to the mediation process. Such an approach requires conflict fluency as well as cultural fluency for effective mediation. This thesis explores how the intervention strategies of mediation may be enhanced through increased cultural understanding. Current theories of intercultural conflict transformation and intercultural communication are reviewed. Conflict fluency is understood through a mediation perspective. Cultural fluency is understood through cultural identity, cultural values, communication styles, and conflict styles. A case study follows the theoretical review of the literature. In this case study, a small community mediation center illustrates what is happening in the field today regarding the relationship between culture and conflict. The case study involves a 6 holistic analysis of the organization, seeking to understand intercultural competence at all levels. This includes an analysis of keystone materials, a survey of mediators, Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) results, and interviews with mediators as well as organizational leadership. The thesis concludes with a list of recommendations that may be useful to this community mediation center as well as other similar organizations. Amongst these recommendations are potentially useful training items such as intercultural conflict styles, critical moment dialogues, and other intercultural tools designed to increase mediator competence in intercultural communication.

Banz, Kelly. "Calming the ocular storm : the effect of corticosteroids in inflammatory oedema." University of Western Australia. Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0093.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this research is to test the therapeutic potential of certain new generation corticosteroid drugs in order to develop safe and effective treatment for eye diseases that result in oedema, or swelling. The rising incidence of diabetes and the ageing population of developed countries mean that the prevalence of uveitis, diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration will rise. Often, oedema is one of the reasons for vision loss. Corticosteroids are often used to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is one of several sources of oedema. Glucocorticoids, a class of corticosteroids that have anti-inflammatory properties, are thus used to treat ocular oedema. There is an unmet need to support clinical experience of the efficacy of steroids for ocular inflammation and oedema with more substantial scientific evidence. None of the drugs under investigation, with the exceptions of dexamethasone and triamcinolone, have been used for any ocular therapeutic purpose before. This thesis investigates “repurposing” fludrocortisone to the ophthalmic area. 11-Desoxycorticosterone (11D) and Deoxycorticosterone (DCS), other potentially valuable mineralocorticoids, remain completely untested. Lastly, Kenacort ®, or triamcinolone acetonide (TCA), is only used off-label by ophthalmologists. Methods: In the first study, corticosteroids, and especially mineralocorticoids, were investigated for their treatment efficacy in experimental uveitis, or intraocular inflammation (using a model known as endotoxin induced uveitis). In the second study, endothelial cells from choroidal blood vessels in the back of the eye were used in vitro to study whether corticosteroids reduce paracellular (between cells) permeability. Lastly, since endophthalmitis due to frequent injections is a side effect of corticosteroid use, the pharmacokinetics of different size formulations of corticosteroids were studied in an effort to find a formula that would have a prolonged dwell time within the eye.

Davi, Ariana. "From All Sides: How Mexico Ended Up in the Eye of the Drug Storm." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/197.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years Mexico has found itself at the center of the drug ?war? as powerful criminal organizations have destabilized the region by engaging in this illicit, multi-billion dollar trade that allows drug lords emerge as powerful political actors. Violence and corruption are having a devastating effect on the new and struggling democracy as the weak institutions put in place during the reign of the PRI have not been replaced with a workable system. The judiciary and law enforcement continue to be ineffective as President Calderon chose to mobilize the military to help combat drug trafficking. Mexico is also experiencing the challenges of drug addiction as the competitive trade drove dealers to open up local markets for cheap and highly addictive drugs. Mexico has found itself fighting the drug war on all fronts and this article seeks to explain the circumstances that led the nation to this vulnerable position. This article is a historical look at the processes by which Mexico transformed the economy to capitalism, developed and industrialized, and then transitioned to democracy, and found itself here in the eye of the drug storm.

Abstract:
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia is home to the largest transnational oil corporation and gated suburban residential compound in the world. In exploring Saudi ARAMCO, I will undoubtedly be opening to the centerfold of all socio-cultural, religious, political, economic and pedagogical forces affecting today's geo-political affairs. The theoretical focus of my thesis comes from both a global and critical pedagogy framework that investigates the nature of asymmetrical power relations on micro, meso and macro levels. Additionally, the multiple perspectives I have gained while living in Dhahran and mediating between identities including girl, woman, South-Asian, Canadian, expatriate, student and artist have provided me with particular insights of a hermeneutical, epistemological, narrative, qualitative, phenomenological and visual nature. This has enabled me to perform rich multi-methodological research and informed written analysis. In this way, my thesis hopes to contribute to the examination of this largely un-explored phenomenon.

Walch, Colin. "Conflict in the Eye of the Storm : Micro-dynamics of Natural Disasters, Cooperation and Armed Conflict."

Full text
Abstract:
Many of the most destructive natural disasters have taken place in situations characterized by armed conflict and insecurity: the Indian Ocean tsunami in Sri Lanka and Indonesia in 2004, the floods in Pakistan in 2011, the drought in Somalia in 2011 and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. Surprisingly little research has systematically explored how armed conflict affects natural disaster management, and how shocks from natural disaster influence conflict dynamics. This dissertation addresses these gaps by providing a qualitative and disaggregated analysis of the micro-dynamics underpinning the relationship between armed conflict, natural disasters and cooperation. It asks: what is the relationship between natural disasters and processes of conflict and cooperation in countries affected by civil conflict? To explore this question, the dissertation offers four essays that explore different facets of this relationship, focusing on the rebel group. Examining collaboration between rebel group and humanitarian actors during disaster relief efforts in the Philippines, essay I finds that rebel group behavior after a natural disaster is shaped by the level of hostility between combatant parties and the nature of the ties with the local population. Exploring the effect of natural disasters on conflict dynamics in the case of the Philippines, essay II suggests that natural disasters hinder rebel group recruitment tactics, by increasing hardship for rebel combatants and supporters, by weakening the rebel group’s organizational structure and supply lines, and by leading to a loss of territorial control. Based on a comparative case study between Colombia and the Philippines, essay III revisits ripeness theory and argues that the level of rebel group cohesion will help to predict whether or not rebel groups stay at the negotiation table until an agreement is reached. While a typhoon affected the Philippines during the negotiations, it did not “ripen” the peace talks. Finally, article IV explores pre-disaster evacuation across conflict-affected regions in the Philippines and India, and argues that both experience of previous disaster and the level of trust in government officials influence the likelihood of people evacuating. The dissertation has important implications for both disaster management and conflict resolution, and it calls for more dialogue between both disciplines.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to rising number of products on the shelves of stores and the fact that about 70% of buying decisions are made at the point-of-purchase, retailers and marketers are growingly investing on in-store advertising material to grab their customers’ attention. Thus, measuring the effectiveness of the in-store material in catching consumers’ attention would be highly of interest of marketers. In this study we have investigated the priming effect of in-store print advertisement on the visual attention of consumers. An experiment was conducted in a Swedish retail store where using eye-tracking technology, the visual behavior of two groups of participants who had been exposed to in-store product signs was captured. The results of this study shows that participants who had looked at a product sign, noted (fixated at least once) that product on the shelf earlier while the number of fixations on the target products was not directly influenced. An implication for managers is that they can use in-store product signs to manipulate the visual attention of consumers in a way that designated brands are attended earlier.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to see whether digital screens are effective as promotional tools, and how consumer behavior is related to this type of in-store promotion. Through an exploratory study conducted at Ica Maxi Karlstad the phenomena was investigated by using eye-tracking and surveys. By using this method the authors could compare the factors related to shopping habits with the amount of attention given to in-store elements in a grocery store. Key findings indicate that the digital screens that were examined do not communicate enough relevant information, to gain the attention from the consumers. The results show that digital screens are something that task-oriented people pays a little attention to. It turned out that other more traditional in-store elements, such as ordinary yellow price-signs, gained more attention. Furthermore, the result opens up for further studies and research within this area.

Le, Pennec Hettie. "Du miroir au kaleidoscope : le dévoilement du sujet dans les quatre dernières oeuvres de Patrick White (The eye of the storm, A fringe of leaves, The Twyborn affair et Memoirs of many in one)." Rennes 2, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009REN20002.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to reassess the specificity of Patrick White’s last four long fictional works. Critics have indeed tended to interpret the whole of White’s literary production through the prism of the novels of the middle period – several of which undeniably rank high in Australian literary heritage – thus missing the specific character of the various texts or the perceptible evolution within White’s work. This perspective presents the religious motif as the keystone of the Whitian universe, where uniting with the divine is seen as a solution to the characters’ quest for identity. In White’s last fictional works however, the divine element gradually disappears as a divided subject emerges, this being particularly noticeable in the progressive assertion of the first person narrative. This thematic and aesthetic evolution brings about a radical change in the characters’ quest for identity and its conclusion. Freudian concepts of the self and the subject reinterpreted by Lacan allow the subversion of identity – understood as “sameness” (Ricoeur) – to be presented in terms of a redefinition of the self’s unity and truth. This subversion of identity also means questioning the writer’s literary identity: White’s last fictional works become more of a game involving the reader in the process of building up a multi-faceted truth

Abstract:
This study arose out of what I saw as a gap in the criticism of Patrick White's fiction in which satire and its related subversive forms are largely overlooked. It consequently reads five of White's post-1948 novels from the standpoint of satire. It discusses the history and various theories of satire to develop an analytic framework appropriate to his satire and it conducts a comprehensive review of the critical literature to account for the development of the dominant orthodox religious approach to his fiction. It compares aspects of White's satire to aspects of the satire produced by some of the notable exemplars of the English and American traditions and it takes issue with a number of the readings produced by the religious and other established approaches to White's fiction. I initially establish White as a satirist by elaborating the social satire that emerges incidentally in The Tree of Man and rather more episodically in Voss. I investigate White's sources for Voss to shed light on the extent of his engagement with history, on his commitment to historical accuracy, and on the extent to which this is a serious high-minded historical work in which he seeks to teach us more about our selves, particularly about our history and identity. The way White expands his satire in Voss given that it is an eminently historical novel is instructive in terms of his purposes. I illustrate White's burgeoning use of satire by elaborating the extended and sometimes extravagant satire that he develops in Riders in the Chariot, by investigating the turn inwards upon his own creative activity that occurs when he experiments with a variant subversive form, satire by parody, in The Eye of the Storm, and by examining his use of the devices, tropes, and strategies of post-modem grotesque satire in The Twyborn Affair. My reading of White's novels from the standpoint of satire enables me to identify an important development within his oeuvre that involves a shift away from the symbolic realism of The Aunt's Story (1948) and the two novels that precede it to a mode of writing that is initially historical in The Tree of Man and Voss but which becomes increasingly satirical as White expands his satire and experiments with such related forms as burlesque, parody, parodic satire, and grotesque satire in his subsequent novels. I thus chart a change in the nature of his satire that reflects a dramatic movement away from the ontological concerns of modernism to the epistemological concerns of post-modernism. Consequent upon this, I pinpoint the changes in the philosophy that his satire bears as its ultimate meaning. I examine the links between the five novels and White's own period to establish the socio-historical referentiality of his satire. I argue that because his engagement with Australian history, society, and culture, is ongoing and thorough, then these five novels together comprise a subjective history of the period, serving to complement our knowledge in these areas. This study demonstrates that White's writing, because of the ongoing development of his satire, is never static but ever-changing. He is not simply or exclusively a religious or otherwise metaphysical novelist, or a symbolist-allegorist, or a psychological realist, or any other kind of generic writer. Finally, I demonstrate that White exceeds the categories that his critics have tried to impose upon him.

Rowe, Trevor. "The Effect of Prosody on Preschool Children’s Emotional, Cognitive, and Behavioral-eye and Behavioral-body Engagement during Story Time." DigitalCommons@USU, 2016. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5225.

Full text
Abstract:
Many children have insufficient early literacy experiences and fail to obtain proficient emergent literacy before they enter kindergarten. Reading to young children has been positively linked to improving their emergent literacy. Numerous factors influence how engaged children are while being read to including the adult’s prosody, receptive vocabulary, and the home literacy environment. Using a quantitative quasiexperimental design, this study sought to understand the association among prosody, child engagement (emotional, cognitive, behavioral-eye, and behavioral-body), receptive vocabulary, and the home literacy environment. The sample included 76 3-5 year-old children from local child care centers and their parents. To understand the relationship between prosody and engagement, children were randomly assigned to watch a story with typical or high prosody. Emotional, cognitive, behavioral-eye, and behavioral-body engagement measures were used to understand how engaged children were in the story. Children’s receptive vocabulary was assessed, and parents completed a home literacy survey. The moderating effects of receptive vocabulary and the home literacy environment (i.e., how much time parents spent reading to children and children’s TV time) between prosody and each type of engagement was examined. Children’s engagement did not differ between typical and high prosody stories. A statistically significant relationship was found between the cognitive and behavioral-eye r(74) = .44, p < .01, cognitive and behavioral-body r(74) = .30, p < .01, and behavioral-eye and behavioral-body engagement measures r(74) = .72, p < .01. Receptive vocabulary and the home literacy environment did not moderate the relationship between story prosody and any type of engagement.

Mule, Jessica Loko. "The Effects of Native Advertising Disclosure and Advertising Recognition on Perceptions of News Story and News Website Credibility: A Consumer Neuroscience Approach." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33889.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of Native Advertising has sparked ethical concerns, due to its controversial nature inherent in its definition - a paid form of advertising that disguises persuasive communications as the editorial content of the publishing media outlet. The growing popularity of Native Advertising practices over the past decade in online news publishing has contributed towards the increasingly blurred lines between commercial and editorial content which in turn engenders feelings of deception in consumers and threatens to lower the trustworthiness of news publishers as an objective source. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to undertake theory testing guided by the tenets of the Persuasion Knowledge Model [PKM] (Friestad & Wright, 1994) to uncover insights on whether disclosure serves as an effective measure in publishers' efforts of mitigating the potential of consumer deception. In particular, this study investigated the relationships between: (1) effect of disclosure label positioning on advertising recognition; (2) mediating influence of visual attention on the aforementioned relationship; and (3) effect of advertising recognition on Inference of Manipulation [IMI] and perceptions of the online news publishers' credibility. The study used a quantitative multi-methodology research approach. An innovative Neuromarketing approach was undertaken through a psychophysiological-based analysis of visual attention to disclosure, measured as Fixation (ms/m) using eye-tracking technology, in addition to self-reported measures obtained via an online survey. In line with similar past studies, this study used convenience non-probability sampling and random assignment of participants to experimental groups, on a sample of 87 students between the ages of 20-29 years from the University of Cape Town (UCT). Findings showed no significant difference in the likelihood of advertising recognition, neither between the groups presented with a disclosure and those not, nor between the varying positions of disclosure. Additionally, advertising recognition had a positive influence on perceptions of credibility, contrary to theory and evidence from past studies (described in the Literature Review). Thus, it was concluded that disclosure and advertising recognition are necessary antecedents for critical processing and formation of judgement, but by themselves are not sufficient for perceived transparency and subsequent evaluations of the publisher's credibility. This study presents design implications for practitioners in the online news publishing industry and marketers: the perceived utility of the sponsored content, along with sponsorship transparency through disclosure, plays an important role in minimizing the negative influence of advertising recognition on perceived credibility.

Coyle, Timothy P. "Eyes of the storm: can fusion centers play a crucial role during the response phase of natural disasters through collaborative relationships with emergency operations centers?" Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43896.

Through the maturation of the national network of fusion centers, processes and capabilities originally designed to detect and thwart terrorist attacks are now applied to disaster responses. The fusion process, which involves the synthesis and analysis of streams of data, can create incident specific intelligence. The sharing of this information can enhance the operating picture that is critical to key decision makers and the discipline of emergency management. This thesis examined three case studies of fusion center disaster responses through a collaborative-based analytical framework. The resulting analysis of the case studies identified the crucial role played by fusion centers in responding to disaster events in a collaborative effort with emergency operations centers. This thesis concludes that fusion centers offer the greatest impact through enabling information sharing throughout the response phase. The specific benefits of the sharing of information directly influence executive briefings and the deployment of resources. This thesis also modeled a collaborative response. The research determined that the depth and breadth of these relationships involving cooperative responses must be proportionate to the incident and include a level of redundancy. Through a system design model, overconnectivity through efficiency was shown to increase the likelihood of fracturing cooperative relationships.

Abstract:
Representations of natural disasters in Black Southern literature identify social location as the greatest indicator of risk vulnerability. Moreover, they can expose the precarious subjectivity of the Black female reproductive body, as addressed through characters Lulu in Richard Wright’s “Down by the Riverside,” Janie in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Jesmyn Ward’s Esch in Salvage the Bones. Together, these female characters share a legacy of social marginalization and Black female resistance that is (re)shaped through their experiences with ecological catastrophe. This thesis considers these three texts together as an ongoing testimony and as a means to bear witness to a socio-historical record of disaster oppression and Black female resistance.

Abstract:
Military nurses are often faced with uncertainty in their careers. The potential for deployment raises several concerns: family security, personal safety, and appropriate training to meet the requirements of deployment. Effectively managing these concerns necessitates coping skills and a supportive environment. Using grounded theory, three Air Force nurses were interviewed about their experience of deployment in support of Desert Shield/Storm. From these interviews, a theory emerged of Camaraderie, Patriotism, and Personal Growth as defining the experience. Camaraderie had three dimensions: Physical, Emotional, and Psychological. Despite the stressors encountered throughout the period of time deployed, the experience was described as an overall positive event. This study was an initial attempt to define the experience of deployment. Nurses facing future deployments could use this theory to design supportive processes to ensure a positive experience.

Abstract:

This study is concerned with the negative effects of wearing corrective lenses while using eye trackers, and the correction of those negative effects. The eye tracker technology studied is the video based real-time Pupil Center and Corneal Reflection method. With a user study, the wearing of eyeglasses is shown to cause 20 % greater errors in the accuracy of an eye tracker than when not wearing glasses. The error is shown to depend on where on the eye tracker viewing area the user is looking.

A model for ray refraction when wearing glasses was developed. Measurements on distortions on the image of the eye caused by eyeglass lenses were carried out. The distortions were analyzed with eye tracking software to determine their impact on the image-to-world coordinates mapping. A typical dependence of 1 mm relative distance change on cornea to 9 degrees of visual field was found.

The developed mathematical/physiological model for eyeglasses focuses on artifacts not possible to accommodate for with existing calibration methods, primarily varying combinations of viewing angles and head rotations. The main unknown in the presented model is the effective strength of the glasses. Automatic identification is discussed. The model presented here is general in nature and needs to be developed further in order to be a part of a specific application.

The monitoring of precipitation is important for scientific purposes, such as the study of world weather patterns, the development of global precipitation maps, and the tracking of seasonal and diurnal variations in precipitation rates. Over time many observation methods have been used to estimate precipitation: rain gauges, ground based radar systems, and visible, infrared, and passive microwave sensors in orbiting satellites. This research project uses data from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU-A and AMSU-B) which consists of passive microwave sensors that collect data in the opaque water vapor and oxygen microwave absorption bands. This data supports 15-km resolution global precipitation rate estimates. The goal of this research is to develop a computational method that will improve the accuracy of these precipitation estimates by including spatial information in the precipitation retrieval, which is currently pixel based. This spatial information, which consists of the precipitation rate at each pixel of the image, is used to divide the data into separate storms, where a storm is defined as a precipitation region that is separated from other regions by an area of low or zero precipitation. Once storms have been identified, a neural network is used to estimate the integrated precipitation rate over each storm using as input several feature vectors that characterize the initial storm-wide precipitation rate estimates. Then the estimate of integrated precipitation rate is used to adjust the precipitation values of the pixels that correspond to the storm.
(cont.) These methods have resulted in a decrease in the mean-square-discrepancy of the estimate of integrated precipitation rate, as compared to NEXRAD ground-based radar systems, by nearly a factor of two.

Utility infrastructures are constantly damaged by naturally occurring weather. Such damage results in customer service interruption and repairs are necessary to return the system to normal operation. In most cases these events are few and far between but major storm events (i.e. Hurricane Sandy) cause damage on a significantly higher scale. Large numbers of customers have service interrupted and repair costs are in the millions of dollars. The ability to predict damage before the event and optimize response can significantly cut costs. The first task was to develop a model to predict outages on the network. Using weather data from the past six storms as well as outage data from the events, asset information (framing, pole age, etc.), and environmental information were used to understand the interactions that lead to outages (forested areas are more likely to have outages than underground assets for example). Utilizing data mining and machine learning techniques we developed a model that gathers the data and applies a classification tree model to predict outages caused by weather. Next we developed an optimization model to allocate repair crews across Atlantic Electric staging locations in response to the predicted damage to ensure the earliest possible restoration time. Regulators impose constraints such as cost and return to service time on utility firms and these constraints will largely drive the distribution of repair crews. While the model starts with predicted results, the use of robust optimization will allow Atlantic Electric to optimize their response despite the uncertainty of why outages have occurred, which will lead to more effective response planning and execution across a variety of weather-related outages. Using these models Atlantic Electric will have data driven capability to not only predict how much damage an incoming storm will produce, but also aid in planning how to allocate their repair crews. These tools will ensure Atlantic Electric can properly plan for storm events and as more storms occur the tools will increase their efficacy.

Abstract:
According to the World Health Organization, in 1980 there was 108 millions diabetes patients around the world, and in 2014 the number increased to 422 millions. This is a percentage rise from 4,7 to 8,5 in the same time period. According to the report Vision 2020, about 5% of the blindness in the world is contributed to diabetic retinopathy. 4% of these people will never get treated for their diseases. Different people get different treatments depending on where they are in the world. The different costs mainly depend on available equipment, salaries, and countries currency stand on the world market. Out of 37 million cases of blindness, about 1.8 million are related to diabetic retinopathy. After 15 years of carrying this disease 2% will be blind and 10% will have severe visual loss. 20 years down the line of having diabetes, 75% will have some form of diabetic retinopathy. Governments, insurance companies and health facilities around the world have trouble keeping up with the costs and availability of medical personnel for treatment of patients. There is a need for a new way of thinking. An alternative. A cheap, reliable and quick method of discovering diseased at its earlier stages that will dramatically lower the cost and pressure on the health industry. The mobile phone application market is a somewhat untapped market when it comes medical equipment. To relieve the absence of this kind of application the Diabetic Eye Screening program was created. The application maps anomalies within the retina and provides statistical data for the patients in their own mobile phones and tablets without any need of meeting medical professionals. The information can safely and reliably be shared between partners quickly for evaluation of a patient's immediate health status.

Abstract:
1 Introduction Resonant waves can be generated when a disturbance such as an earthquake or tornado moves down the edge of a bay or harbour. The qualitative e¤ect of such a disturbance can be observed in a classroom, with minimal apparatus, on a small scale by anyone who causes a partially …lled wineglass to ”sing”(resonate) using a wet …nger. If one carefully examines the surface of the liquid it is possible to see that four ridges or crests follow the …nger around the rim. The photographs below were obtained using a turntable (Apfel’s idea [1]), milk as the liquid, a clear wineglass and a blackened wineglass. The surface of the liquid also exhibits other, smaller patterns called crispations (edge or cross waves [6]) which we do not attempt to model here (see Figure 2): The vibration pattern of the glass is called a ”quadrupole vibration” in the literature and the e¤ect of this vibration has undoubtedly been know ever since mankind discovered the delights of drinking liquids from …ne glass containers. Indeed the e¤ect of a singing wineglass is noted in the literature by the ever inquisitive Michael Faraday [2] in 1831! We discuss a simulation of the crests (not the crispations) using mathematics easy enough for senior undergraduates to understand as well as an animation of this e¤ect using the CAS Mathematica.

Abstract:
Extratropical cyclones are important to the day to day weather of the midlatitudes. They provide essential rainfall for human activities such as agriculture, but can also cause large amounts of damage by their strong winds and heavy precipitation. It is therefore very important to predict these cyclones as accurately and as far in advance as possible. A new storm tracking approach to forecast verification is developed and implemented to obtain detailed information about the prediction and predictability of storms. The approach is applied to observing system forecast experiments constructed using the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 40-year reanalysis system (ERA40). It is also used to analyse the ECMWF and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Ensemble Prediction Systems (EPS). An Internet Service ha" been developed to allow users to run a storm tracking program from a web browser with remote datasets and distributed computing. The service has been used in this thesis to help with the large amounts of data processing involved. Results show that the intensity and propagatiun speed of storms are more difficult to predict than the direction the storms take. There is a small bias for forecast cyclones to propagate too slowly. The importance of a high vertical resolution of observations is highlighted. This is particularly true for northern hemisphere winter storms, which have much larger growth rates. It is shown that the ECMWF EPS has a slightly higher level of performance than the NCEP EPS in terms of the prediction of storms. The results also illustrate a number of benefits an ensemble forecast can offer over a single deterministic forecast. It is suggested that in the future operational forecast centres should consider using a storm tracking verification approach in addition to the standard approaches.

Full text
Abstract:
The poor quality of many receiving waters has been attributed to the frequent operation of combined sewer overflows (C. S. O. s). As the existing need for overflow structures is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future it is imperative that these deleterious effects are minimised. The present study investigates the pollution performance of three common overflow structure designs (the stilling pond, the double high side weir and the double low side weir) and aims to institute a novel pollution monitoring methodology for combined sewer overflows. Four sites in the central Sheffield area were monitored for periods from 9 to 13 months (two high-side weirs, one low-side weir and a stilling pond). Each overflow was monitored with continuous flow measurement equipment and bottle samplers to obtain samples of sewage from the storm and dry weather flows. The bottle samples were analysed for suspended solids (SS), ash, BOD, COD, pH, conductivity and ammonia. Mesh bags and frames were also installed to trap the gross solids (solids with a median size>6mm) from the inflow and the spill flow. The stilling pond and the high side weirs were found to perform well hydraulically, limiting the flow to treatment to a steady maximum. The low side weir performed unsatisfactorily, hydraulically, as the flow to treatment rose as the incoming flow increased and, for some storm conditions, a hydraulic jump formed towards the downstream end of the chamber. The first foul flush was regularly observed at the stilling pond and low side weir sites. Peak concentrations for SS were found to be 600 times greater than the dry weather flow for the same time of day. The first foul flush was rarely observed at the other sites. For the majority of storms at each site the spill concentrations were of a similar magnitude to the inflow sample concentrations. However for a large minority of SS, BOD and COD samples, the concentrations of the spill samples were significantly less than the inflow samples. t-Tests suggested that at the stilling pond and high side weir sites there is a significant reduction in the spill sample concentrations for the water quality (bottle) samples. Although the load of material spilled during an overflow event was found to be small in comparison to the inflow load, large amounts of material were spilled to the watercourse during storm events at each of the sites investigated. The storm load entering the CSO was found to be considerably influenced by peak intensity of the storm at the stilling pond site and antecedent dry weather period at one of the high side weir sites. At the other sites a number of hydrological factors were found to be influential e. g. duration. It is thought that time of year may also be important factor as this influences the type of rainfall (its duration and intensity). The types of gross solid collected at each site were similar with leaf material and sanitary towels consistently being the major items in terms of total mass. The efficiency of the stilling pond and one of the high side weirs in retaining gross solids in the flow to treatment appeared to be explained by the flow split although for 5 of 14 storms at the stilling pond and 3 of 7 at the high side weir a treatment effect was observed. The treatment factors at the low side weir were noticeably less than those for the other three sites with all being less than unity (average 0.5). This suggests that the low side weir preferentially discharges gross solid material over the weir. The treatment factors at the other high side weir were low due to inadequate sampling of the spill flow.

Novakova, Lenka. "The lifecycle of storm tracks." Thesis, University of Reading, 2016. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/69086/.

Full text
Abstract:
Local periodic behaviour of storm tracks is found in the North Atlantic, the North Pacific, and in an aquaplanet global circulation model. Such periodicity is suggested to be a result of baroclinic instability that is characterised by nonlinear interactions between eddy fluxes and the mean-flow structure. This periodicity is associated with different processes at the beginning and end parts of the storm track. The beginning part exhibits maxima in both storm track activity and its growth rate, both of which oscillate temporarily in intensity akin to a predator-prey relationship. A nonlinear oscillator model is proposed to describe this relationship quantitatively, yielding a good agreement with atmospheric observations. It is predicted and observed that on average stronger storm events occur less frequently but are triggered more rapidly. Examination of the associated energetics suggests additional importance of the mean overturning circulation and the transport of mean available potential energy from polar latitudes, neither of which were included in the present model. Towards the end of the storm track, the dynamics are characterised more by variability in eddy momentum fluxes and transient jets, the latter often exhibiting periodic latitudinal fluctuations. It is suggested that the above effect of cycling baroclinicity and heat flux induces changes in eddy anisotropy which are responsible for the periodic jet deflections further downstream. On average, low heat flux is associated with an equatorward deflection of the jet, and vice versa. This jetdeflecting effect is characterised by a transfer of the system to a lower-frequency variability, and a mechanism to explain the observed preferred transitions of the North Atlantic jet is proposed. The oscillations in the storm track activity, baroclinicity and eddy-driven jet are closely linked, and can be viewed as describing the spatio-temporal lifecycle of the storm track.

Abstract:
Literature survey made in this research indicated that the roughness has a significant effect on the design of a self-cleansing sewer. A conceptual model was therefore developed taking into account the effect of roughness in the sediment transport in sewers. This model was later tested against experimental data obtained from a test rig. The rig had a pipe which was specially fabricated in two halves so that it could be divided to coat the interior with uniform sand grains to provide roughness. The experimental data shows a good correlation with the model developed. Two relationships i.e. for smooth and rough pipes, were derived from the results. The effects of volumetric sediment concentration, pipe diameter, sediment size and effective roughness on these relationships were in turn examined. Head loss formulae acquired by past researchers were slightly modified to suit the range covered by the experimental data. The relationships developed in this research were subsequently applied to sewer design. These were later compared to the criterion of 0.76 m/s proposed by the British Standards. In the case of smooth pipes, it shows conclusively that the criterion of 0.76 m/s produces excessive slopes for pipe diameter up to 1.0 metre. However, for rough pipes the criterion gives insufficient slopes to maintain a self-cleansing sewer. This is valid up to a pipe diameter of 0.3 metre. Beyond this diameter the criterion gives high slopes. Comparisons were also made with studies in the wider field of sediment transport on fixed bed. These have set in context the proposed formulae for smooth and rough pipes in the design of storm sewers.

Doctoral thesis, Karlstads universitet, Centrum för tjänsteforskning, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-25947.

Full text
Abstract:
Decision making for fast-moving consumer goods involves a choice between numerous similar alternatives. Under such demanding circumstances, a decision is made for one product. The decision is dependent on the interaction between the environment and the mind of the consumer, both of which are filled with information that can influence the outcome. The aim of this dissertation is to explore how the mind and the environment guides attention towards considered and chosen products in consumer decision making at the point-of-purchase. Consumers are equipped with several effort reduction strategies to simplify complex decision making. The selection of strategies can be conscious or automatic and driven by information in the environment or the mind of the decision maker. The selected decision strategy reduces the set of options to one alternative in an iterative process of comparisons that are fast and rely on perceptual cues to quickly exclude irrelevant products. This thesis uses eye-tracking to explore this rapid processing that lacks conscious access or control. The purpose is to explore how product packaging and placement (as in-store factors), and recognition, preferences, and choice task (as out-of-store factors) influence the decision-making process through visual attention. The results of the 10 experiments in the five papers that comprise this thesis shed new light on the role of visual attention in the interaction between the environment and the mind, and its influence on the consumer. It is said that consumers choose with their eyes, which means that unseen is unsold. The results of this thesis show that it is just as important to be comprehended as it is to be seen. In split-second decision making, the ability to recognize and comprehend a product can significantly impact preferences. Comprehension stretches beyond perception as consumers infer value from memory structures that influence attention. Hence, the eye truly sees what the mind is prepared to comprehend.

Full text
Abstract:
Eye mySelf is a narrative inquiry into the word "self" A discursive object (Danziger, 2003; Cushman, 1990), "self" saturates the everyday language of reflexivity and remains a familiar feature of psychological literature and therapy. I have become familiar with it in my own life: I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology; I have participated in a year of Counselling Psychology coursework and supervised training; and from the age of two or three I participated in a therapeutic community, a community to which I belonged for close to 20 years. I know myself. Or do I? Do I know my "self"? How it works? What it does, or might do? I am suspicious. I think my "self" might be getting away with something, and I want to explore this suspicion. As a narrative inquiry into my own remembered experience of "self," this thesis explores language via language, and rests on Jacques Derrida's (1991, 2000) thought about signs, signatures, and testimony, Judith Butler's (2004) thought about how we might be given over to each other, and Michel Foucault's (1990) thought about discourse, confession, and sexuality. It is organized as a collection of pensées (Leggo, 1990) - thoughts, explorations, imaginings, wandering wonderings about "self" - with the hope of generating a salient and palpable resonance between the pieces (Heraclitus, 1987), a resonance of possibility for how "self" might work, what it might do, how it does you and I, your "I" and my "I", (or is that "eye"?), and what that might come to do to us. In line with Butler's (2004) conceptions of the body as that which bears the human, I want to evoke how it might feel to bear, perhaps by baring, a "self." I mean to arouse suspicion for this baring, for this "self," and its place. To this end, I eye my "self."

Black symbols and representations of the natural world are used to communicate complex thoughts in various dimensions. Through the process of purification I communicated with confusion and the privilege of being ignorant became my inspiration. My new self is like the alchemists; investigating in new dimensions where symbols and imagery exist to comprehend the always-surrounding unknown. With soda-lime and flat glass I created solid glass symbols. Through the microscope I looked at organic specimens and self-made glass samples and recorded what I saw. Every detail is an indispensable part of an important whole and perceiving is the key to entering new universes. My encounter with science has given me the tools to develop a greater awareness to investigate why and how I am making art. I am convinced that artists and scientists are similar in seeing the universe in unique and specific ways. It is only the representations of those visions that are phrased in different languages.

Although they consume 75% of natural resources, these areas occupy only 3% of the earth’s surface. In 2016, United Nations Organization’s resolution called “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” came into force as a foundation for a plan of action so that the planet and man could prosper. United Nations’ most recent conference about climate changes (cop 21) explored solutions to deal with global warming consequences and set worldwide goals in order to reduce greenhouse gases. Tourism is part of this problem . A growing activity which generates wealth and pollution. Tourism has positive aspects, however, it also has an impact on phenomena that threaten the future of the planet: climate change, excessive consumption, plastic waste, loss of biodiversity, the overburden of cities, use of fossil fuels, energy consumption, discharges. That is why having sustainable tourism is increasingly important. Resorting to design, this research project intends to contribute to the creation and promotion of a new business, in an area with strong growth potential – tourism . It is materialized through participation in a business idea, supporting its development from the beginning. Assuming the strategic dimension that design can have, not only in the construction of communication but also in the development and implementation of the idea itself and its financing. This research emerged from the identification of a business opportunity, in an area that has shown a growing interest by the public. The market and the context, where this business can be developed, were studied. The interest of the visits to the green spaces was also studied because they embody the environmental strategy of modern cities and they tell much of their history (and of their own stories). From a qualitative methodology, a theoretical investigation was carried out, through the literature review of the research fields: Tourism and Communication Design. Thus, a theoretical framework capable of boosting and directing the project component has been developed. In a second phase, case studies were analyzed, including the way in which international businesses, which explore the same niche, present themselves and disseminate their offer. Next, we analyzed factors related to project implementation: swot analysis, characterization of target audience and identification of potential competitors. As a result of this research, we have accomplish a singular project that intends to operate in a market niche, exploring and valuing gardens and green spaces in the city. Proposing to introduce the history and life of cities, through their gardens, whether they have hundreds of years or less than a decade. Awakening interest for the ‘green’ — Green Eye.
