Tolentino-Serrano, Brandon. "In the Eye of the Storm: Houston after Hurricane Harvey." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/203.

Full text
Abstract:
Situated in one of the wettest climates in America, Houston, TX has had a long history of heavy rains and unprecedented floods. Unfortunately, floods have become more common over the last few decades as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of hurricanes around the globe. To complicate matters further, Houston has quickly sprawled to accommodate over 2.5 billion people. Rapid urbanization has rendered the landscape even more susceptible to floods through excess concretization and watershed disturbance. This thesis traces the history of the Bayou City in relation to the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. By mapping out the original neighborhoods and the current demographics of the city, I argue that low-income and minority groups have been systematically forced into higher-risk floodplains via prejudice housing practices. Furthermore, I explore the roles of the National Insurance Flood Program (NIFP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the rebuilding of the city following Harvey, and I detail the sudden spike in unsheltered homeless people across the region. The thesis closes by critiquing projects that have been proposed for the future well-being of Houston (i.e. reservoir remediation, conveyance projects, coastal dykes, etc.). Evidently, local and outside experts across fields and organizations need to cooperate to determine the immediate and specific needs of neighborhoods and people across the city of Houston.

Binder, Heidi A. "Cultural fluency in the eye of the storm : a mediation case study." Scholarly Commons, 2012. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/800.

Full text
Abstract:
The eye of the storm is the calm center amidst chaos where, metaphorically speaking, mediators often begin their work. Recent research has advocated for a more holistic, relational, culturally inclusive approach to the mediation process. Such an approach requires conflict fluency as well as cultural fluency for effective mediation. This thesis explores how the intervention strategies of mediation may be enhanced through increased cultural understanding. Current theories of intercultural conflict transformation and intercultural communication are reviewed. Conflict fluency is understood through a mediation perspective. Cultural fluency is understood through cultural identity, cultural values, communication styles, and conflict styles. A case study follows the theoretical review of the literature. In this case study, a small community mediation center illustrates what is happening in the field today regarding the relationship between culture and conflict. The case study involves a 6 holistic analysis of the organization, seeking to understand intercultural competence at all levels. This includes an analysis of keystone materials, a survey of mediators, Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) results, and interviews with mediators as well as organizational leadership. The thesis concludes with a list of recommendations that may be useful to this community mediation center as well as other similar organizations. Amongst these recommendations are potentially useful training items such as intercultural conflict styles, critical moment dialogues, and other intercultural tools designed to increase mediator competence in intercultural communication.

Banz, Kelly. "Calming the ocular storm : the effect of corticosteroids in inflammatory oedema." University of Western Australia. Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0093.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this research is to test the therapeutic potential of certain new generation corticosteroid drugs in order to develop safe and effective treatment for eye diseases that result in oedema, or swelling. The rising incidence of diabetes and the ageing population of developed countries mean that the prevalence of uveitis, diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration will rise. Often, oedema is one of the reasons for vision loss. Corticosteroids are often used to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is one of several sources of oedema. Glucocorticoids, a class of corticosteroids that have anti-inflammatory properties, are thus used to treat ocular oedema. There is an unmet need to support clinical experience of the efficacy of steroids for ocular inflammation and oedema with more substantial scientific evidence. None of the drugs under investigation, with the exceptions of dexamethasone and triamcinolone, have been used for any ocular therapeutic purpose before. This thesis investigates “repurposing” fludrocortisone to the ophthalmic area. 11-Desoxycorticosterone (11D) and Deoxycorticosterone (DCS), other potentially valuable mineralocorticoids, remain completely untested. Lastly, Kenacort ®, or triamcinolone acetonide (TCA), is only used off-label by ophthalmologists. Methods: In the first study, corticosteroids, and especially mineralocorticoids, were investigated for their treatment efficacy in experimental uveitis, or intraocular inflammation (using a model known as endotoxin induced uveitis). In the second study, endothelial cells from choroidal blood vessels in the back of the eye were used in vitro to study whether corticosteroids reduce paracellular (between cells) permeability. Lastly, since endophthalmitis due to frequent injections is a side effect of corticosteroid use, the pharmacokinetics of different size formulations of corticosteroids were studied in an effort to find a formula that would have a prolonged dwell time within the eye.

Davi, Ariana. "From All Sides: How Mexico Ended Up in the Eye of the Drug Storm." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/197.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years Mexico has found itself at the center of the drug ?war? as powerful criminal organizations have destabilized the region by engaging in this illicit, multi-billion dollar trade that allows drug lords emerge as powerful political actors. Violence and corruption are having a devastating effect on the new and struggling democracy as the weak institutions put in place during the reign of the PRI have not been replaced with a workable system. The judiciary and law enforcement continue to be ineffective as President Calderon chose to mobilize the military to help combat drug trafficking. Mexico is also experiencing the challenges of drug addiction as the competitive trade drove dealers to open up local markets for cheap and highly addictive drugs. Mexico has found itself fighting the drug war on all fronts and this article seeks to explain the circumstances that led the nation to this vulnerable position. This article is a historical look at the processes by which Mexico transformed the economy to capitalism, developed and industrialized, and then transitioned to democracy, and found itself here in the eye of the drug storm.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia is home to the largest transnational oil corporation and gated suburban residential compound in the world. In exploring Saudi ARAMCO, I will undoubtedly be opening to the centerfold of all socio-cultural, religious, political, economic and pedagogical forces affecting today's geo-political affairs. The theoretical focus of my thesis comes from both a global and critical pedagogy framework that investigates the nature of asymmetrical power relations on micro, meso and macro levels. Additionally, the multiple perspectives I have gained while living in Dhahran and mediating between identities including girl, woman, South-Asian, Canadian, expatriate, student and artist have provided me with particular insights of a hermeneutical, epistemological, narrative, qualitative, phenomenological and visual nature. This has enabled me to perform rich multi-methodological research and informed written analysis. In this way, my thesis hopes to contribute to the examination of this largely un-explored phenomenon.

Walch, Colin. "Conflict in the Eye of the Storm : Micro-dynamics of Natural Disasters, Cooperation and Armed Conflict." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för freds- och konfliktforskning, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-268341.

Full text
Abstract:
Many of the most destructive natural disasters have taken place in situations characterized by armed conflict and insecurity: the Indian Ocean tsunami in Sri Lanka and Indonesia in 2004, the floods in Pakistan in 2011, the drought in Somalia in 2011 and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. Surprisingly little research has systematically explored how armed conflict affects natural disaster management, and how shocks from natural disaster influence conflict dynamics. This dissertation addresses these gaps by providing a qualitative and disaggregated analysis of the micro-dynamics underpinning the relationship between armed conflict, natural disasters and cooperation. It asks: what is the relationship between natural disasters and processes of conflict and cooperation in countries affected by civil conflict? To explore this question, the dissertation offers four essays that explore different facets of this relationship, focusing on the rebel group. Examining collaboration between rebel group and humanitarian actors during disaster relief efforts in the Philippines, essay I finds that rebel group behavior after a natural disaster is shaped by the level of hostility between combatant parties and the nature of the ties with the local population. Exploring the effect of natural disasters on conflict dynamics in the case of the Philippines, essay II suggests that natural disasters hinder rebel group recruitment tactics, by increasing hardship for rebel combatants and supporters, by weakening the rebel group’s organizational structure and supply lines, and by leading to a loss of territorial control. Based on a comparative case study between Colombia and the Philippines, essay III revisits ripeness theory and argues that the level of rebel group cohesion will help to predict whether or not rebel groups stay at the negotiation table until an agreement is reached. While a typhoon affected the Philippines during the negotiations, it did not “ripen” the peace talks. Finally, article IV explores pre-disaster evacuation across conflict-affected regions in the Philippines and India, and argues that both experience of previous disaster and the level of trust in government officials influence the likelihood of people evacuating. The dissertation has important implications for both disaster management and conflict resolution, and it calls for more dialogue between both disciplines.

Abstract:
This paper presents the key results and conclusions of the study of FPSO transient responses in the cyclonic storm. The measured wind, wave and current data of recent cyclonic events are utilized to simulate the FPSO responses in terms of mooring loads, vessel yaw motion and relative FPSO heading to waves as it weathervanes in the wind, waves and current, input as time series. The primary objectives are to check the FPSO responses as the cyclone (eye or fringe) passes over it, causing rapid changes in the intensity and the direction of environmental loads, and to confirm the adequacy of the present mooring system design criteria. The results of the study serve as a good benchmark of the current industry standard for mooring design and address industry’s concern of the safety of FPSO platforms in the event of cyclonic storm. This study has used the hindcast data to inspect the event of a strong cyclonic storm passing over an FPSO. Despite the fact that the wind direction changes for about 140° in only one hour in the path of the cyclone eye, higher mooring line tension has not been observed due to reduced wind speed in the eye of the storm. The extreme mooring line tension is still governed by the responses in the path of cyclone fringe due to its maximum wind speed. Note that the transient analysis has shown that, during the rapid change of wind direction, the vessel can potentially be exposed to beam sea waves. Although this does not correspond with the highest tension in mooring legs, it can lead to critical green water impact.

Abstract:
This study investigated second- and third-year science students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of their learning practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focused on the concept of active learning, with special attention paid to self-regulation and self-direction. The data collected through mixed research methods provided evidence of students’ flexible adjustment to the exceptional circumstances. However, the data also revealed a relatively limited range of learning strategies reported by respondents. Thus, this paper identifies an important need for further investigation of students’ practices to enhance their awareness of learning strategies, as a way of becoming active learners. Finally, the study also made salient the need for teacher training in effective teaching strategies, as a complementary strategy to promote students’ active learning. The conclusions from the study reach beyond the current circumstances, as they suggest implications for learning design in terms of educators’ training and designing for active learning.

Abstract:
The importance of packaging design has been increasing in today’s competitive world. Approximately 70% of purchasing decisions are made in a store. Over 60% of purchasing decisions are based on packaging; the actual shopping is thus the final chance for the packaging to attract the buyer. Packaging has between 2 and 3 seconds to convince the buyer. In addition to the appearance of the individual packages, the appearance of brand packaging is important. We compared different designs of packages. Finally, we placed individual packages on the shelves in a store and carried out measurement of in-store noting. The measurements were carried out using eye tracking equipment (Tobii X120). For each participant, the observing time and the number of fixations in individual areas of interest were measured; both were then compared with heat maps. In this way, we compared the suitability of the form of individual packages and the salience of the packages on the shelves for potential buyers.

Abstract:
We used eye tracking to measure visual attention to tobacco products and pro- and anti-tobacco advertisements (pro-ads and anti-ads) during a shopping task in a three-dimensional virtual convenience store. We used eye-tracking hardware to track the percentage of fixations (number of times the eye was essentially stationary; F) and dwell time (time spent looking at an object; DT) for several categories of objects and ads for 30 adult current cigarette smokers. We used Wald F-tests to compare fixations and dwell time across categories, adjusting comparisons of ads by the number of each type of ad. Overall, unadjusted for the number of each object, participants focused significantly greater attention on snacks and drinks and tobacco products than ads (all P<0.005). Adjusting for the number of each type of ad viewed, participants devoted significantly greater visual attention to pro-ads than anti-ads or ads unrelated to tobacco (P<0.001). Visual attention for anti-ads was significantly greater when the ads were placed on the store’s external walls or hung from the ceiling than when placed on the gas pump or floor (P<0.005). In a cluttered convenience store environment, anti-ads at the point of sale have to compete with many other stimuli. Restrictions on tobacco product displays and advertisements at the point of sale could reduce the stimuli that attract smokers’ attention away from anti-ads.
