Abstract:
By the mid-1960s, American writer Kay Boyle was in possession of a three-book contract from Doubleday publishers in New York. The cornerstone of this deal was to be a history of Germany, a manuscript she began in the late 1950s. Boyle encountered difficulties completing this work, and after lobbying successfully to write a history of German women instead, she eventually abandoned the project altogether. To help her meet her professional obligations, Boyle hoped that Doubleday would accept a new plan to republish Three Short Novels, a work that had appeared under the Beacon imprint in 1958. That publisher still had four thousand copies of the book in its warehouse, however, and Doubleday editor Ken McCormick was unable to agree to Boyle’s proposal. McCormick suggested instead that she undertake work revising Robert McAlmon’s 1938 autobiography, Being Geniuses Together. Indeed, in the years following his death in 1956, Boyle had been unsuccessful in locating an American publisher for her friend’s book, so when Doubleday brought forward an edition of the work in 1968, it contained alternate chapters written by Kay Boyle, herself. McAlmon’s original text is approximately one hundred and ten thousand words in length; Boyle’s edition is one hundred and sixty thousand words, only seventy thousand of which were written by Robert McAlmon. ‘‘This present book is his,’’ Boyle wrote of McAlmon’s achievement in her 1984 afterword (333), and while one might argue that this is the case, no one can question the fact that his book was altered substantially from its original form.

We sequenced multiple genes from the enigmatic genera Bhagadatta Moore, 1898, Kumothales Overlaet, 1940 and Harmilla Aurivillius, 1892 (Nymphalidae, Limenitidinae) and analysed them together with a large published dataset. We find that Bhagadatta is sister to the genera Cymothoe Hübner, 1819+Harma Doubleday, 1848, and that Kumothales is sister to these three. Harmilla is nested within the genus Euriphene Boisduval, 1847. We thus transfer Kumothales and Bhagadatta to the tribe Cymothoini, and we synonymise Harmillasyn. nov. with Euriphene.

Abstract We test a set of inequalities in choice probabilities, shown to be necessary and sufficient for random utility by Falmagne (1978). We run an experiment in which each of 141 participants chooses six times from each doubleton or larger subset of a universe of five lotteries. We compute Bayes factors in favour of random utility, versus an alternative with unrestricted choice probabilities. There is strong evidence that a large majority of participants satisfy random utility; however, there is strong evidence against random utility for four participants. Results are fairly robust to the choice of prior.

Abstract:
39 Alexis de Tocqueville, The Old R´´gime and the French Revolution, trans. Stuart Gilbert (Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday and Doubleday, 1955), pp. 88-89.Taking their cue from Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus (1833-34), scholars of Regency and early-Victorian dandyism have focused on a supposed opposition between the dandyism of a declining aristocracy and the moral earnestness of a rising bourgeoisie. This historical model obscures the full complexity of relations between the nineteenthcentury British bourgeoisie and aristocracy, a complexity that can be illuminated by a closer examination of William Makepeace Thackeray's works. Thackeray's novels and sketches, which are surprisingly filled with middle-class dandies (such as Vanity Fair's George Osborne and Jos Sedley) and vigorous, hypermasculine aristocrats (such as Vanity Fair's Rawdon Crawley), reverse the Victorian literary stereotypes of effete aristocrats and manly bourgeoisie. Focusing particularly on Vanity Fair (1847- 48) and on Thackeray's sketch journalism, I seek to understand why Thackeray repeatedly depicts bourgeois men who are feminized both by their vanity and by their homosocial-even homoerotic-desire for more powerful aristocratic men. My essay places Thackeray's works within recent historiographical models that emphasize the fusion of, rather than the opposition between, the nineteenth-century British bourgeoisie and aristocracy. Protesting against this fusion in the name of bourgeois independence, Thackeray indicts the British middle classes for their obsession with aristocratic concepts of gentility,a phenomenon that he was the first to label "snobbism." For Thackeray, I argue, the comic trope of bourgeois male vanity becomes an especially powerful device for critiquing"snobbism." By calling upon the scandalous figure of the mirror-gazing man,Thackeray attempts to shock his middle-class readers into acknowledging the artificial and performative nature of their own class personae.

Abstract:
e13010 Background: Identification of oncogenic driver mutations (ODM) and targeted therapies have increased the number of treatment options for patients (pts) with non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (ns-NSCLC). Different methods exist to detect ODM and there is no standard approach. This study examines the changes in detection of ODM over a 2-year period before and after implementing reflexive genomic testing using next generation sequencing (NGS) in January 2015. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed ns-NSCLC cases (stages I-IV) in 2014 and 2015 using the UVA Cancer Registry. We identified pts with pathologically-confirmed ns-NSCLC and reviewed any genotyping - single gene pyrosequencing, NGS, or FISH for gene rearrangements - within 90 days of pathologic confirmation. Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) was defined as both NGS and ALK/ROS1 FISH. Chi-square analyses were generated using SAS 9.4. Results: A total of 360 pts were included. 60% had genotyping while 19% underwent CGP. Mutations are summarized in the table below. From 2014 to 2015, genotyping increased from 50% to 69% (p<0.001), with CGP increasing from 2% to 48% of testing performed (p<0.001). Detection of oncogene driver mutations increased from 28% to 46% (p=0.009). Doubletons (pts with 2 driver mutations) increased from 0% to 5% (p=0.036). Conclusions: Reflexive CGP significantly increased the rate of detection of ODM at our center with results similar to previous studies. Previous studies detected low rates of doubleton mutations, perhaps due to lack of uniform NGS testing. Utilization of NGS may increase detection of doubleton mutations, for which further study is necessary to evaluate efficacy of targeted therapies. For centers without reflexive CGP, implementing this approach is likely to increase rates of ODM detection and expand treatment options. [Table: see text]

Abstract:

Butterflies from Atlantic Forest fragments in northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)Abstract. This study aimed to provide a list and evaluate the diversity of species of fruit-feeding butterflies in two fragments of Decidual Seasonal Forest in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. Samples were collected monthly, between June 2014 and March 2015. Traps with attractive baits of fermented banana in sugar cane juice were used to capture the butterflies. After a 4800 hours sampling effort, 760 butterflies were sampled and distributed into 49 species. Satyrinae was the family with the greatest wealth and abundance of species. Hypothyris euclea laphria (Doubleday) represented a new registry for the state. The abundance of butterflies was heterogeneous in both fragments during the months sampled. Despite being a short-term inventory, butterfly richness was quite representative in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. It is recommended to intensify similar studies to provide information for the conservation of habitats.

Abstract:
We first review the interpretation of world sheet defects as D branes described by a critical theory in 11 dimensions, that we interpret as M theory. We then show that D-brane recoil induces dynamically an anti-de Sitter (AdS) space–time background, with criticality restored by a twelfth timelike dimension described by a Liouville field. Local physics in the bulk of this AdS11 may be described by an Osp (1|32, R) ⊗ Osp (1|32, R) topological gauge theory (TGT), with nonlocal boundary states in doubleton representations. We draw analogies with structures previously exhibited in two-dimensional black hole models. Wilson loops of "matter" in the TGT may be described by an effective string action, and defect condensation may yield string tension and cause a space–time metric to appear.

Abstract:
Crystals of KAgCO3belong to an order–disorder (OD) family of structures composed of layers of two kinds. There are two polytypes with a maximum degree of order [MDO1:Pccb; MDO2:Ibca, doubleda-axis compared with MDO1], which are both realised to a different extent in two crystals under investigation [volume fraction MDO1:MDO2in crystal (I): 0.0216:0.9784 (3) and in crystal (II): 0.9657:0.0343 (3)]. Sharp diffraction spots and the absence of diffuse scattering indicate highly ordered macroscopic domains. The structure of KAgCO3was refined concurrently against all reflections using an allotwin model (addition of the intensities of both domains). It is shown that a disorder model refined against reflections of only one domain can lead to a significant overestimation of the volume fraction of this domain.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article reports on the authors’ efforts to develop a method of using book reviews to establish the reputations of publishers. The authors examined the quality of books published by de Gruyter, Greenwood, Doubleday, University of Georgia Press, and Louisiana State University Press as it is expressed in abstracts of book reviews published in the online version of Book Review Digest. The authors extracted a sample for each publisher from Book Review Digest, examined the sample, and compared each publisher sample against a control sample. Although it is true that most book reviews are positive, there are discernible variations in how reviewers express themselves about books. The study also looks at Choice as a source of book reviews, and briefly examines the relationship between price and quality. This study adds to the literature of the use of book reviews as a selection tool.
