Abstract:
By the mid-1960s, American writer Kay Boyle was in possession of a three-book contract from Doubleday publishers in New York. The cornerstone of this deal was to be a history of Germany, a manuscript she began in the late 1950s. Boyle encountered difficulties completing this work, and after lobbying successfully to write a history of German women instead, she eventually abandoned the project altogether. To help her meet her professional obligations, Boyle hoped that Doubleday would accept a new plan to republish Three Short Novels, a work that had appeared under the Beacon imprint in 1958. That publisher still had four thousand copies of the book in its warehouse, however, and Doubleday editor Ken McCormick was unable to agree to Boyle’s proposal. McCormick suggested instead that she undertake work revising Robert McAlmon’s 1938 autobiography, Being Geniuses Together. Indeed, in the years following his death in 1956, Boyle had been unsuccessful in locating an American publisher for her friend’s book, so when Doubleday brought forward an edition of the work in 1968, it contained alternate chapters written by Kay Boyle, herself. McAlmon’s original text is approximately one hundred and ten thousand words in length; Boyle’s edition is one hundred and sixty thousand words, only seventy thousand of which were written by Robert McAlmon. ‘‘This present book is his,’’ Boyle wrote of McAlmon’s achievement in her 1984 afterword (333), and while one might argue that this is the case, no one can question the fact that his book was altered substantially from its original form.

Les resultats obtenus sont essentiels dans la preuve de cette cojecture etablie par la suite en collaboration avec w. Meeks. Partant d'un espace des modules introduit par f. Wei, pour une famille particuliere d'immersions, nous etudions d'abord sa structure d'ensemble algebrique. Nous montrons que la condition de plongement implique un important resultat d'ouverture pour l'espace des solutions. Ensuite, nous etudions le cas limite ou l'angle entre les generateurs du tore t tend vers 0. Nous montrons qu'une telle situation n'est possible que dans le cas d'une famille de surfaces de scherk.

Resumo: Alesa Doubleday, 1847 está distribuído em toda região Neotropical e inclui 14 espécies, com acentuadas variações fenotípicas. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar a revisão taxonômica do gênero Alesa, verificando a existência de possíveis novas espécies e validade dos nomes disponíveis e seus sinônimos, com base em novos caracteres diagnósticos servindo de subsídio para um melhor entendimento do gênero. A partir desta revisão, duas novas espécies são descritas: Alesa sp. 1, sp. nov. e Alesa sp. 2, sp. nov.; um status é revalidado: Alesa negra Röber, 1831 stat. rev.; dois novos sinônimos são propostos Alesa fournierae Lathy, 1958 syn. nov., Alesa amethystina Gallard & Fernandez, 2015 syn. nov.; Sete lectótipos são designados: Erycina priolas Godart, [1824], Alesa smaragdifera Westwood, 1851, Mimocastnia rothschildi Seitz, 1913, Eurybia telephae Boisduval, 1936, Alesa hemiurga, Bates, 1868, Alesa lipara Bates, 1868, Alesa thelydrias Bates, 1868; e três neótipos estabelecidos: Papilio amesis Cramer, 1777, Erycina prema Godart, [1824], Mimocastnia egeria Biedermann, 1936. Abstract: Alesa Doubleday, 1847 is distributed throughout the Neotropical region and includes 14 species, with marked phenotypic variations. The objective of this study was to perform the taxonomic revision of the genus Alesa, verifying the existence of possible new species and the validity of the available names and their synonyms, based on new diagnostic characters, as a subsidy for a better understanding of the genus. Abstract:
Le développement des lasers de puissance engendre un intérêt pour la recherche de matériaux présentant des propriétés optiques non linéaires (ONL). Les matériaux vitreux sont de très bons candidats puisqu'ils peuvent être transparents et élaborés en grandes dimensions. La précipitation de particules non centro-symétrique dans un verre permet d'engendrer cette propriété en volume, et d'ingérer facilement ce matériau dans les dispositifs lasers. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse présente les résultats obtenus sur la précipitation de la phase LiNO3 dans la matrice vitreuse 35 Li2O- 25 Nb2O5- 40 SiO2. Le mécanisme de cristallisation de cette phase est étudié par analyse thermique, imagerie optique et électronique ainsi que par une analyse in-situ. Ces analyses mettent en évidence une cristallisation sphérolitique du niobate de lithium dans ce verre, conduisant à l'obtention de vitrocéramiques. Les propriétés optiques non linéaires d'ordre deux sont mesurés sur ces matériaux. Un signal original et isotrope de Génération de Second Harmonique a été mesuré. Une analyse multi-échelle permet une meilleure compréhension et une corrélation entre la structure des sphérolites et l'origine de la génération d'un tel signal. Le modèle développé suite à ces analyses permet d'entrevoir le développement de nouveaux matériaux micro-composites à propriétés ONL isotropes.

Ce travail concerne la preparation et la caracterisation d'especes de basse coordinance du silicium, stabilisees par coordination intramoleculaire d'une base de lewis. L'examen de la bibliographie a montre que cette technique de stabilisation peut etre utilisee avec les especes comportant une double liaison, comme avec les especes divalentes du silicium (silylenes). Il a ete possible d'isoler une silathione, une silaselenone, des silaimines substituees, un silaphosphene, et des complexes entre divers metaux de transition et des silylenes. Ces composes ont ete caracterises par les techniques habituelles (rmn, ir, sm,. . . ) et la structure de la silathione a ete determinee par diffraction des rx. Ils presentent tous une inertie chimique surprenante vis-a-vis des reactifs nucleophiles ou electrophiles. Ils sont par contre tres sensibles aux reactions d'oxydation. L'absence de reactivite a ete attribuee a l'existence d'un caractere switterionique dans ces molecules

Abstract:
Les résultats exposés dans cette thèse constituent les premières données expérimentales que l'on possède sur les ions diatomiques doublement chargés produits par double photoionisation. Les expériences décrites ont été réalisées en utilisant le rayonnement synchrotron d'ACO photons dans la région d'énergie 35-140 ev. La première partie est consacrée à l'étude des molécules d’hydrogène et de deutérium. La section efficace de double photoionisation par la méthode de coïncidences photoion-photoion (PIPICO) énergies de photons s'étendant du seuil de double photoionisation (environ 50 eV) jusqu'à 140 ev. La comparaison entre ces résultats et les calculs ab-initio de Le Aouzo Indique qu'on peut rendre compte de la double photoionisation de manière satisfaisante par un modèle dans lequel les Interactions électron­électron sont parfaitement décrites dans l'état initial de la molécule neutre tandis que l'état final des deux électrons éjectés peut être considéré comme non-corrélé. La deuxième partie est consacrée à la recherche des différents états électroniques de N₂⁺⁺ produits par double photoionisation. Six états électroniques dissociatifs ont été observés et il a été démontré qu'ils sont tous corrélés à la première limite de dissociation N⁺(3p) + N⁺(3p), les fragments N⁺ étant dans leur état fondamental. La troisième partie est consacrée à la recherche des états stables des ions moléculaires doublement chargés pouvant donner lieu à des émissions de fluorescence. Une nouvelle méthode de coïncidences photoion-photon de fluorescence (PIFCO) a été mise au point. Deux émissions ont été découvertes dans NO₂⁺. La mesure des énergies verticales de formation des états émetteurs a permis d'attribuer ces émissions aux transitions des deux premiers états excités stables vers l'état fondamental de l'ion diatomique doublement chargé
The results described in this work are the first experimental data about diatomic doubly charged cations formed by double photoionization. Experiments were realized using the synchrotron radiation from ACO as a photon source ln the energy range 35-140 eV. The first part is devoted to the study of the simpliest molecular case, hydrogen and deuterium. Double photoionization cross section was measured using the photoion-photoion coïncidence method (PIPICO) in the photon energy range from appearance potential at 50 eV up to 140 eV. From the comparison between these results and the recent ab-initio calculations of Le Rouzo, it was establish that the double photoionisatlon is well understood by a modal ln which electron-electron correlations are clearly described in the initial state of the neutral molecule while ln the final state, the two electrons are not correlated. The second part presents a search for different electronic state of doubly charged cations produced by double photoionisation of nitrogen. Lt was demonstrated, by using PIPICO method, that most of electronic states of N₂⁺⁺ can be formed by photoionisation. Six dissociative states were observed and we have demonstrated that all of them are correlated with the first dissociation limit N⁺(3p) + N⁺(3p) where N⁺ fragments are in their fundamental state. The third part reports a search about stable states of molecular doubly charged cations which can emit. A new photoion-photon of fluorescence (PIFCO) method was used. Two different emissions ln NO₂⁺ were discovered. The determination of the appearance potential of emitting states allowed to attribute these emissions to the transitions from the two first stable electronic states to the ground state of the doubly charged cation. These results were compared to the latest calculations of the potential curve of NO₂⁺

This chapter provides an introduction to large deviation theory. It begins with an overview of the motivatio n for the problem under study, focusing on probability distributions and how to construct an empirical distribution. It then considers the notion of a lower semi-continuous function and that of a lower semi-continuous relaxation before discussing the large deviation property for i.i.d. samples. In particular, it describes Sanov's theorem for a finite alphabet and proceeds by analyzing large deviation property for Markov chains, taking into account stationary distributions, entropy and relative entropy rates, the rate function for doubleton frequencies, and the rate function for singleton frequencies.

In February 2011, IBM’s Watson computer entered the championship round of the popular TV quiz show Jeopardy!, going on to beat Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings, each long-time champions of the game. Fourteen years earlier, in 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue computer had beaten world chess champion Garry Kasparov. At that time no one ascribed any aspects of human ‘intelligence’ to Deep Blue, even though playing chess well is often considered an indicator of human intelligence. Deep Blue’s feat, while remarkable, relied on using vast amounts of computing power to look ahead and search through many millions of possible move sequences. ‘Brute force, not “intelligence”,’ we all said. Watson’s success certainly appeared similar. Looking at Watson one saw dozens of servers and many terabytes of memory, packed into ‘the equivalent of eight refrigerators’, to quote Dave Ferrucci, the architect of Watson. Why should Watson be a surprise? Consider one of the easier questions that Watson answered during Jeopardy!: ‘Which New Yorker who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg was once considered the inventor of baseball?’ A quick Google search might reveal that Alexander Cartwright wrote the rules of the game; further, he also lived in Manhattan. But what about having fought at Gettysburg? Adding ‘civil war’ or even ‘Gettysburg’ to the query brings us to a Wikipedia page for Abner Doubleday where we find that he ‘is often mistakenly credited with having invented baseball’. ‘Abner Doubleday ’ is indeed the right answer, which Watson guessed correctly. However, if Watson was following these sequence of steps, just as you or I might, how advanced would its abilities to understand natural language have to be? Notice that it would have had to parse the sentence ‘is often mistakenly credited with . . .’ and ‘understand’ it to a sufficient degree and recognize it as providing sufficient evidence to conclude that Abner Doubleday was ‘once considered the inventor of baseball’. Of course, the questions can be tougher: ‘B.I.D. means you take and Rx this many times a day’—what’s your guess? How is Watson supposed to ‘know’ that ‘B.I.D.’ stands for the Latin bis in die, meaning twice a day, and not for ‘B.I.D. Canada Ltd.’, a manufacturer and installer of bulk handling equipment, or even Bid Rx, an internet website? How does it decide that Rx is also a medical abbreviation? If it had to figure all this out from Wikipedia and other public resources it would certainly need farmore sophisticated techniques for processing language than we have seen in Chapter 2.

Ray and Maggie Bradbury’s winter 1990 stay in Paris began as Bradbury successfully negotiated a fortieth anniversary hardbound edition of The Martian Chronicles from Doubleday. Chapter 26 also narrates how Bradbury discovered that his perennial popularity in Eastern Europe was expanding as the Iron Curtain collapsed, especially in Czechoslovakia, where newly elected President Vaclav Havel proved to be a Bradbury enthusiast. The chapter closes with Bradbury’s unexpected invitation to a May 1990 luncheon for President Gorbachev held at the Russian Embassy in Washington. Bradbury and Isaac Asimov were invited as the favorite writers of the Gorbachev family. Bradbury was also beginning to learn of the scattered and informal Bradbury reading clubs that had existed in Russia throughout much of the Cold War period.

Le Cameroun compte plus de 230 langues. Avec le français et l’anglais comme langues officielles, les langues nationales ou « indigènes » n’ont aucun statut réel. La situation linguistique du Cameroun est doublement conflictuelle. En effet on assiste d’un côté, à une « guerre » entre anglophones et francophones, et de l’autre côté, entre les langues officielles et les langues nationales. La colonisation a certes une grande part de responsabilité dans ce problème, mais il serait simpliste de considérer ce facteur comme l’unique cause de la crise qui sévit actuellement au Cameroun. Plus qu’une crise politico- linguistique, il s’agit manifestement d’une crise identitaire. D’où la question, quelle politique linguistique pour le Cameroun ? Après avoir fait une revue de la littérature sur la sociolinguistique du Cameroun, nous montrerons, à partir de la « Language Management Theory » (Nekvapil et Sherman 2015), qu’une politique linguistique plus inclusive, c’est-à-dire de type «bottom-up », pourrait aider à pallier les conflits.
