López, Carolina, and Pettersson Natalia Bustamante.

Abstract:
Purpose:  The purpose is to analyze and evaluate Apoteket Shop and The Body Shop as a brand.   Method:  This essay will have a holistic approach. The chosen theoretical approach is deductive. Qualitative methods will be used in the form of deep interviews as well as quantitative methods in the form a questionnaire survey.   Theories:  Involvement Theory, Brand, Brand Strategy, Business Concept, Planning Philosophies, Brand Service Value Chain, Total Communication Empiric:  A total of six deep interviews with representatives from Apoteket Shop and The Body Shop. Questionnaire survey with 25 customers from each company. Result:  The result shows that Apoteket Shop has a long–term thinking in their work but needs to work more with taking these thoughts into action. The Body Shop has also a long–term thinking which clearly shows in the way they work.      Conclusion:  The undue competitive advantages that Apoteket Shop has are the fact that they already belong to a strong and well established brand. If Apoteket Shop doesn’t work so that the structure of their organization is in tune with the strong business concept/brand, these undue advantages will only be short-term since the conditions for a long-term doesn´t exist in the organization.

In most manufacturing environments, the closer you get to the production floor, the shorter and shorter becomes the reference time frame ... down to the order of minutes and seconds. Much time is devoted to dealing with daily production issues such as equipment downtime, parts shortages, operator situations, and other daily throughput issues. Such activities are commonly referred to as firefighting. Put out one fire, then move on to the next. Unfortunately, little time or resources are left to concentrate on the time frame that really affects the sustainability of an organization. That time frame is the future and the concern is what continuous improvement methods are in place to ensure a sustainable future? The main objective of this project was to help improve throughput in an automotive assembly plant body shop. Both firefighting and continuous improvement methods affect throughput. An appropriate balance between the two is required to achieve optimal levels of throughput. This thesis attempts to provide methods to firefight more efficiently, shift the focus to continuous improvement, and to highlight the compatibility of the Theory of Constraints and Lean Manufacturing. The thesis concludes the following: --- Firefighting and continuous improvement methods should be data driven to ensure that limited resources are used efficiently. --- Theory of Constraints and Lean Manufacturing are indeed compatible, and can effectively focus throughput improvement activities. It is important to recognize when and where to appropriately apply these techniques. --- Throughput improvement teams should consist of, and be driven by, plant personnel who are committed to 'learn by doing'. Such teams, as opposed to consultant-led teams, are more likely to develop sustainable processes. --- In-depth study of the product launch process should lead to solutions that will help prevent many throughput problems. --- Regardless of the manufacturing philosophies that are employed, worker involvement is essential to the success of improvement initiatives. Improvements will be limited if this key element is ignored.

Arnell, Mari. "Kassa system?

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Many companies integrate a social and environmental aspect into their businesses, beyond what’s required by law. It has become more important for companies to demonstrate their commitment to promote sustainable development and to ensure that people are treated in a manner that is considered ethically correct. This is because today the companies' stakeholders, for example customers and shareholders, are more aware and generally demand more. Working with such a responsibility is called to work with CSR, Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR is something that has manifested itself in the cosmetics industry where environmental, social and ethical responsibility is the focus, but economics are also important as the company also has a responsibility to its shareholders. Oriflame and The Body Shop are two large companies who state that they take responsibility for their actions. Cosmetics companies use ingredients that commonly are grown in third world countries. Cosmetic products are also often produced in a way that may negatively affect the environment. Both companies have had CSR as an important part of their business since they were founded, in the early seventies. This was a time when neither social nor environmental concerns received much attention. Animal testing was also common. Even so, both companies have advocated a responsibility beyond that required by law and they claim to never have used animal testing. Oriflame and The Body Shop are quite similar to each other given that they were founded at the same time, that they work with the same type of products and that they emphasize similar values, but still they are very different. Oriflame is a Swedish company with global manufacturing and sales. They work a lot with sustainable development which is a natural part of their organization. This work focuses on four main areas: water, waste, climate change and sustainable sources. Within each of these areas they have different strategies and goals that they are trying to achieve. The Body Shop is a UK company which also has global sales. They are, however, more focused on social and ethical responsibility. The Body Shop is currently focusing on five core values in the development of new products: supporting fair trade, defending human rights, opposing animal testing, improving self-esteem and protecting our planet. The comparison between Oriflame and The Body Shop shows how companies can work with different perspectives on CSR. The Body Shop focuses, for example, a lot more on the social responsibility while Oriflame have a more economic approach to their CSR-work. It is generally a question of what the company chooses to focus on, since there is usually no single right answer on how to do it. Since both companies often focus on CSR in marketing, there is also an economic benefit in working with CSR. This enables the possibility of adjusting the CSR-work to benefit the company’s stakeholders. The economic benefits may sometimes tempt companies into highlighting the positive aspects of themselves and, at the same time, withholding things that make them appear less favorable. This appeared somewhat ambiguous in our research. In general companies would maybe find benefit in a more open and honest dialog with their stakeholders even if this could reveal a less favorable truth about the company.

Understanding how various satisfaction attributes contribute to the global satisfaction is increasingly necessary and urgent for companies because they are expected to increase the levels of customer loyalty. At a time of economic crisis and in a market that reaches maturity like mobile communications, it becomes important to know how to keep their customers because their retention is cheaper compared to get a new customer. The study of the impact of the global satisfaction Customer loyalty has been studied over the past decades, but little has been studied about how to get global satisfaction, from the analysis of satisfaction with attributes. In this project, it is investigated witch attributes, subdimensions and dimensions that contribute to the Global Satisfaction and its weight and significance, based on data collected from customers of mobile operators in Portugal. We found that the Quality of Service, and Customer Support in particular, are central to higher levels of Overall Satisfaction. There is also the extreme importance of customer satisfaction in its Global Loyalty.

Santos, Ana Filipa Eduardo Fonseca. "Evaluation of the impact of L’Oréal’s acquisition of The Body Shop on both brands." Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/9576.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This research aims to study the impact that L’Oréal’s acquisition of The Body Shop had on consumers’ identification with both brands. Our research was based on the assumption that because both companies have different cultures and values, this could lead to changes in their brand identifications. Consumers from both brands were evaluated separately and both samples were further divided into two sub-samples: the ones that had previous knowledge about the acquisition and the ones who didn’t. Through this research we concluded that consumers from both brands are environmentally-conscious and also that both considered that company’s social responsibility practices heavily weighed when deciding where to buy. This research was developed based on the Consumer-Company Identification model with some adaptations based on the recent literature. The results suggest that consumers have a strong relationship with both brands. Those who knew a priori about the acquisition expressed that it didn’t have much impact on their perception and purchase behavior. For those who only acknowledged it during the research also demonstrated a remaining strong brand identification (with both brands), although with results weaker than before.

Abstract:

This thesis aims at investigating consumers’ perceptions on the incorporation of an established brand and how the general attitude and buying behaviour is altered in the course of an acquisition. The combination of two or more brands in a newly formed conglomerate implies a combination of values, principles and associations that might affect a company’s appeal. Therefore, underlying reasons for M&As will be elaborated upon as well as branding concepts based on brand image, loyalty and reputation in order to bridge the two theoretical areas with a case study. The acquisition of Body Shop International by L’Oréal represents the practical case, which will be analysed in reference to consumers’ reactions towards it. Quantitative consumer questionnaires will be conducted in order to collect representative data on consumers’ perceptions and associations of the brand Body Shop. Moreover, an expert interview with a Body Shop representative will be executed in order to add the company’s perspective. By analysing the results of the questionnaire, the thesis reveals an observable trend towards a correlation of the awareness of the acquisition and a negative shift in customer perception. The buying behaviour is however not found to be influenced by the combination of the two firms. In conclusion, it can be stated that the need for pre-acquisition analysis regarding strategic fit and compatibility of values and associations is assured. The study clearly identifies that brand dilution is a possible threat for established brands and implies the risk of lost credibility and loyalty.

There are several body shops which are similar by size of workforce, level of utilization and product complexity but which differ considerably by investment required, shop size, uptime, inventory levels and quality accomplished. The purpose of this thesis is to explain why those differences exist. The methods used to understand differences were direct observation, first hand working experience on the line and participation in workshops, analysis of internal and external bibliography, and interviews to line workers, supervisors and managers within different functions. Differences are observed and described in the design and operation of the shops. A "Lean" body shop, named in such a way given their reduced use of resources to accomplish better results, follow an integrated design process where product and process are tightly integrated, maintain similar product architectures across generations enhancing standardization and modularity, similar shop architectures across plants, close relationships with suppliers, elimination of complexity in manufacturing processes, flexible conveyance processes and the use of proven technologies. In addition, a lean body shop's operation works as a coherent and integrated set of practices under three systems: The Social System: Engagement and development of workforce that acts as enabler; The Technical System: Tools to reduce waste and increase quality; The Problem Solving & Continues Improvement System: An ever learning and improving organization where problems are visualized, solved and countermeasures implemented and shared. Finally, this thesis provides insights into the change management processes associated with the transformation into lean body shops, from establishing a sense of urgency and guiding coalition to empowering broad based action employee action and anchoring new approaches in the culture, and performs a case analysis on a successful lean transformation: NUMMI.

Abstract:

Title

Corporate Social Responsibility in Branding - A study of The Body Shop's visitors' attitudes and  purchase decisions

Authors Sara Lundgren El-Salhy & Amanda Lundmark

Seminar Date 2009-06-02

Level C-level Thesis

Tutor Malin Näsholm

Keywords

CSR, The Body Shop, Corporate Identity, Corporate Image, Associations, Attitudes, Purchase Decision

Problem

Previous research suggests that by using well known CSR as a branding tool, companies can create positive consumer attitudes, and these attitudes are assumed to lead to positive purchase decisions. This study aims to test this connection, when CSR is well known, by answering the following problem question: What are the opinions and attitudes among The Body Shop Umeå's visitors towards The Body Shop and CSR, and how do they perceive the company regarding CSR? Are their purchase decisions affected by these opinions and attitudes?

Purpose

To explore the importance of a well-known CSR; to find what attitudes consumers have towards CSR and a company with well-known CSR, and to look at these attitudes' relation to the consumers' purchase decision.

Methodology

A quantitative, deductive study is conducted, where the theory is tested. The data is collected by handing out self-completion questionnaires to The Body Shop visitors in Umeå.

Results & Conclusion

This study shows that The Body Shop visitors in Umeå think that CSR is important when buying cosmetics. The respondents have positive attitudes towards The Body Shop and these positive attitudes can be connected to The Body Shop's CSR. The positive attitudes can also be connected to positive purchase decisions. A conclusion that can be drawn from these findings is that well known CSR can be connected to positive purchase decisions, if the CSR is trustworthy. This conclusion can, however, only be generalized to the population for this study; the visitors to The Body Shop's store in Umeå.

Abstract:

Two of the most important internal functions within a company, which have gained increased importance, are purchasing and logistics. Purchasing and logistics both contribute to the competitiveness of an organisation by conducting different value adding activities separately. There is also a huge potential for increased benefits if a high degree of integration exists between the two functions. Although there is evidence that purchasing and logistics have been working closely together historically, the operational focus of logistics and the commercial focus of purchasing have created a tension between the two functions. It has been shown that some

purchasing managers mostly have been committed to reducing the price. The logistics function has as a cause of this sometimes been forced to deal with late deliveries and inferior quality from

suppliers. To manage the interface activities between the functions is crucial in order to able to achieve integration. Purchasing and logistics functions are of major importance within wholesaling companies because they are considered as core internal functions. This study has been conducted at the wholesaling companies The Body Shop, Hälsokostcentralen (HKC), Mekonomen, Elgiganten and ICA.

Research questions:

§ What activities exist within the purchasing and logistics function at the specific wholesaling companies and which of these activities are integrated?

§ What are the factors that influence the integration between the purchasing and logistics functions and how do these factors hinder or enable the integration?

Purpose: Initially this thesis aims to identify what activities that exist and which of them that are integrated between the purchasing and logistics functions within the wholesaling companies The

Body Shop, HKC, Mekonomen, Elgiganten and ICA. Furthermore the purpose is to identify what factors that influence the integration between the purchasing and logistics function in these

companies and also explain how these factors hinder and enable the integration.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This paper studies the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on image and reputation in the case of L’Oréal and its acquisition of The Body Shop. L’Oréal was suffering from negative headlines claiming that its products were animal tested and they expected that the acquisition of The Body Shop in 2006 would change this image. This study investigates whether CSR practices of The Body Shop helped L’Oréal to rebound from the negative headings. Using a sample of 321 respondents for The Body Shop and a sample of 289 respondents for L’Oréal, it is concluded that CSR is an important factor for a company’s success since the results show that CSR campaigns have a statistically significant impact on a company’s reputation and image. Since a CSR strategy is the key to success, this paper ends with recommendations to successfully implement CSR strategies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The market opening to newcomers in Brazil during the 1990s has increased the local automotive industry competition and the search for new products, technologies and mainly for leaner and financially feasible processes. Within that context, the need to reduce new product development timing has made it necessary to minimize the development period for manufacturing processes. Planning and developing manufacturing operations are complex processes, once they involve different areas in a company and they demand high investment and peculiar technologies. The Manufacturing Engineering is the area in the company that takes over the responsibility for planning, designing and implementing new manufacturing processes for new products. The main objective of that work is define concepts and apply the process simulation on the planning and designing steps of manual and automatic production lines by using computer tools. The target will be the body shop area where the automation and complexity degrees are higher. The advantages of using such tools during the planning and designing phases are not only the reduction of investment and process introduction timing but also the early identification of production bottlenecks, as well as the definition of line buffers that directly affect the process cycles and variable costs. The presented concepts are validated through cases of Volkswagen of Brazil and involving the launching of vehicles such as the new Gol and Voyage and series models like the Polo.

Full text
Abstract:
A new concept of production – Lean Automation – is being developed and implemented at Saab Automobile AB. The aim is to develop solutions for automation that supports the Lean Production principals and way of work. A basic idea is that automation should be build from simple, standardized and modular equipment and that it can be reconfigured by in house personnel. During 2010, two pilots have been installed: Transport using a simple AGV (Lean AGV) and Lean Automation Robot Cell (LARC). Those components are parts of this study that is aiming for a production system with an unchanged high level of productivity also during periods of frequent changes in volume and product scope. The study underlines the importance of gathering the production personnel to enable work balancing, but also to achieve a visual process where errors urgently can be discovered and resolved. The robots work balancing requires a somewhat different approach focusing on the distribution of work elements and taking advantage of the equalizing effect in a common production flow. A tool for an expedient balancing of value added work is introduced. The tool is intended for the balancing of both manual and robotized work. Further, a method to connect the sub assembly level to the main flow is presented. Fork lift trucks and manually loaded feeders is replaced by a simple flow of AGV’s. The system is conveying information about the state of production through the presence of empty carriers. Through this visual system, plus the use of the team concept to achieve a cheap and efficient buffer, shortage of material is prevented. For the selection of internal material flow systems, a set of general guidelines is proposed and exemplified. Finally, the adoption of different solutions for flexibility is linked to the level of assembly and this is also linked to the aspects of parallel versus serial production flow.

Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to highlight customers' problems in finding the right size when shopping for clothes in an online store. The focus area is to investigate whether it is possible for customers to take accurate body measurements or garment measurements with a measuring tape in order to select appropriate clothing size in e-commerce.   A market investigation on the internet was conducted to find out how clothing companies design their size guides. Then a study took place with 20 participant soldiers. They were asked to follow the instructions for taking body measurements of themselves, to take measurements of each other and to measure two selected garments. Finally, they where measured by a garment technologist. The result showed a very large difference, and several of the measures had a span from -6 cm to +6 cm. One finding was that some measurement results were improved when someone else than themselves performed the body measuring. Afterwards the participants were asked to answer a few questions. Around 60 % of the them believed that a film instruction could facilitate the body measuring. The conclusion is that it is important to inform the customers in the size guide that it is important to get help to get as accurate measurements as possible and that an instructional film can facilitate the measuring. A complement to body measurements can be garments measurements in the size guide.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the phenomenon of 'radical commodities'-commercial products which advance an oppositional politics. Examples of such include the products of Rage Against The Machine, a 'revolutionary' rock band; Michael Moore, a best-selling author and award-winning documentary filmmaker; Naomi Klein, a journalist and author of the international bestseller No Logo; The Body Shop, a multinational manufacturer and retailer of 'natural' cosmetics and toiletries; Freitag, a company which manufactures bags, wallets and other fashionable accessories from recycled materials, and; the Adbusters Media Foundation, publisher of Adbusters magazine and producer of Blackspot shoes. Radical commodities are fundamentally paradoxical objects whose apparent ethic would appear to be at odds with the fact that they are commodities. This dissertation asks: can a commodity-object legitimately serve as a vehicle for social and political critique? It is reasoned that the problem of radical commodities is principally structural. Marx's seminal writings on the commodity accordingly represent the logical point of departure. The Marxian analysis illuminates not only the commodity-structure, but also the political problematic which emerges from that structure-for Marx, the commodity is a mechanism of exploitation. From an orthodox Marxist perspective, the idea of a radical commodity would therefore be most contradictory, or indeed impossible. It is argued, however, that the Marxian analysis is inconclusive. This dissertation traces a genealogy of analyses of the commodity, which variously advance or diverge from the orthodox Marxist position. From a perspective of the consumption of commodity-objects, the radical commodity would appear to be possible. Yet, the relationship between the commodity-structure and the capitalist ideology runs deep. The question of the radical commodity is therefore markedly more complex than it might initially appear. With regard to the ideological consequence of the commodity-structure, however, certain streams of post-Marxist analysis are themselves problematic, for they ultimately short-circuit historical critique and destabilise the very possibility of politics. In contrast, this dissertation seeks to reaffirm a place for politics and, in so doing, to establish the theoretical possibility of radical commodities. To contend that the idea of a radical commodity is not fundamentally contradictory, however, says nothing of the political potency of such objects. These are undoubtedly complex objects, whose peculiarities cannot be ascertained by abstract theorisation alone. For this reason, this dissertation also employs empirical analyses of a number of radical commodities. In sum, it is argued that the sphere of commodities should be admitted as a possible site for the expression or implementation of a radical politics, and thus that radical commodities should be understood as a legitimate vehicle for social and political critique, but that such objects are by no means free from contradiction, and that the political efficacy of these products is anything but guaranteed.

Barringer, Ian Edward. "The hydrodynamics of ship sections entering and exiting a fluid." Thesis, Brunel University, 1998. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7860.

Full text
Abstract:
We study the hydrodynamics of wedge, knuckle and box cross-sectional profiles undergoing transient extreme motions, in particular forced entry and exit at constant velocity or acceleration. Extensive data for the forces, pressures and free-surface profiles is generated by an extension of a fully-nonlinear boundary-integral method. The code is thoroughly checked by altering the time step and particle spacing on the bodies and Lagrangian free-surface markers, and, for the wedge, checking self-similarity for the infinite Froude number (gravity free) constant velocity entry. Difficulties with inviscid flow around sharp corners are discussed. Results for exit are of particular interest since no zero-gravity approximation is valid and this precludes application of existing slamming theories in reverse. Whilst entry generally gives larger free-surface motions (spray jets), pressures and hence forces, calculation of exit is needed for the velocity of subsequent slamming and so is of practical interest too. These results are compared with an approximate analytical model, based on Schwarz-Christoffel transformations to calculate the infinite-frequency added mass of the cross-section below the mean water line. For constant acceleration of both entry and exit, the analytical theory is good during the early stages of motion. Later, the assumption of an undisturbed mean water level is clearly violated; the exact calculations show a large amount of draw-down (up-rise), the free-surface making contact with the body well below (above) the mean water level. We therefore examine the effect of reducing (increasing) the submerged body volume to take account of this, which prolongs the agreement between the results considerably and therefore might be used to improve practical calculation of extreme ship motions using existing strip theory codes. Full sets of numerical data input/output are provided in the appendices, together with some mathematical details. We also speculate on the possible application of John's equation to wedge entry.

Flores-Pereira, Maria Tereza.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of organizational culture has been visibly deepened – changing its epistemological base (from a Functionalist paradigm to an interpretative one) generating different conceptual (from a managerial to a symbolic approach) and methodological perspectives (from quantitative to qualitative researches). However, in spite of all these advances, the theme has not been following the development reached by anthropological studies, which focus the body as a form of representing the culture. Therefore, it is my aim in this thesis to unveil in what way the focus on the human body propitiates a better understanding of the notion of organizational culture, starting from two theoretical orientations which work with the relation body-culture: the ‘body artifact’ (socio-historiccultural body) and the ‘embodiment’. In order to perform both analyses, I begin with observations resulting from an organizational ethnography in a great bookstore of shopping center, Livraria Cultura de Porto Alegre. The group of informers who have been privileged to participate in these analyses was the team of shop assistants. Based on this empirical material and, firstly, on studies of The Anthropology of Body (chapter two), I analyzed the body of the worker as an organizational artifact which is singularized by their dynamic feature, hierarchization, and political dimension. Based on these analyses, it was possible to reconsider the feature of inanimate object and the little attention that is offered to questions like classification, hierarchization, and political dimension of organizational artifacts. In the second part (chapter three), I indicate the pre-objective cultural relation (pre-reflexive) that the workers establish with the organizations and the products they commercialize, that is, the embodiment of organizational culture. Hence, I start from studies of Philosophy, Social, and Human Sciences to understand how studies of embodiment enable a new form of conducting methodologically researches about organizational culture and how they develop their conceptualization. I indicate that the focus on embodiment unveil the active role the body has in the organizational life and allows a better understanding of the dynamics of cultural concept.

Williams, Jillian Mary. "Lower Body Kinetics During the Delivery Phase of the Rotational Shot Put Technique." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2981.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to measure the change in joint energy of the hip, knee and ankle of the right and left leg, in the sagittal plane during the delivery phase of the rotational shot put. We hypothesized that (1) throwers who produced a greater total hip energy change would have greater horizontal displacement and (2) throwers who produced a higher ratio of hip energy, in each leg independently, would produce greater horizontal displacement. Subjects (n = 8) must have been right-handed, collegiate or post collegiate level throwers trained in the rotational technique. Vicon Nexus System (Denver, CO, USA) used six MX13+, two F20, two T20 cameras recorded at 240 Hz, and the body Plug-in Gait model to track the body position during each trial. Two AMTI force plates (OR-6, Watertown, MA, USA) were used for collecting ground reaction force data at 960 Hz. A linear regression analysis was performed to determine a relationship between total hip energy change and horizontal displacement. A mixed model regression was used to determine any correlation between horizontal distance and left and right energy change ratios. Athletes who produced a greater total hip energy change had the greatest horizontal displacement (p = .022). Also throwers who produced a higher ratio of left hip energy change to total left leg energy produced the greatest horizontal displacement (p = .02). The ratio of right hip energy change to right leg energy change was found to not be significant to horizontal displacement (p = .955). We feel the findings on the left leg energy change are an attempt by the athlete to both accelerate the shot put as well as stop the rotational progression to allow the athlete to complete a fair throw. The athlete extending both the right and the left hip rapidly during the delivery phase can help explain the combined right and left hip energy change. This action accelerates the ball in a proximal-distal sequence, which allows athletes to reach high final shot put velocities. The higher the final velocity on the shot put positively correlates with the horizontal displacement.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify joint angular kinematics that correspond to shooting accuracy in the stationary ice hockey wrist shot. Twenty-four subjects participated in this study, each performing 10 successful shots to four shooting targets. An eight-camera infra-red motion capture system (240 Hz), using passive reflective markers, was used to record motion of the joints, hockey stick, and puck throughout the performance of the wrist shot. A multiple regression analysis was carried out to examine whole-body kinematic variables with accuracy scores as the dependent variable. Results indicate that no one body region predominated as a predictor of accuracy across all four shooting targets since the wrist shot's general movement pattern required that one or more of the body's joints modulate its movement amplitude, rate and timing to achieve an accurate outcome. Significant accuracy predictors were identified in the lower limbs, torso and upper limbs. An accurate outcome was associated with the following characteristics: The lower body seemed to provide a stable base for support, but also contributed to initiation of movement in the form of weight transfer towards the intended target. We propose that the trail leg seemed to offset rotational motion that could potentially upset the stability of the system if not properly managed. Additionally, angular kinematics at the pelvis, spine and thorax appeared to orient the trunk such that the upper limbs can optimally function to achieve an accurate outcome, and also undoubtedly contributed to force production. And finally, accuracy was associated with more dynamic use of the lead arm specifically at the wrist and shoulder.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is implementing World Geodetic System (WGS) for Naval Surface Tactical Maneuvering Simulation System (NSTMSS), a High Level Architecture (HLA) based naval simulation, and also implementing body coordinate system for the ships of NSTMSS and its combination with WGS so that NSTMSS can be more accurate, and new ship dynamics models can be integrated to the NSTMSS environment more easily. To improve the coordinate system of NSTMSS these methods were used
World Geodetic System - 1984 (WGS 84) was chosen as the reference system of new coordinate system of NSTMSS and coordinates were transformed to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Coordinate System. Also, the terrains which NSTMSS uses created in OpenFlight (FLT) format with UTM map projection method. In addition to this, Ship Body Coordinate System was implemented as a Cartesian coordinate system. This thesis has achieved improved coordinate systems for the NSTMSS environment to increase the realism of the simulation.

Conger, Michael Anthony. "Validation of CFD-MBD FSI for high-gidelity simulations of full-scale WAM-V sea-trials with suspended payload." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1960.

Full text
Abstract:
High-fidelity CFD-MBD FSI (Computational Fluid Dynamics - Multi Body Dynamics Fluid-Structure Interaction) code development and validation by full-scale experiments is presented, for a novel hull form, WAM-V (Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel). FSI validation experiments include cylinder drop with suspended mass and 33 ft WAM-V sea-trials. Calm water and single-wave sea-trails were with the original suspension, while the rough-water testing was with a second generation suspension. CFDShip-Iowa is used as CFD solver, and is coupled to Matlab Simulink MBD models for cylinder drop and second generation WAM-V suspension. For 1DOF cylinder drop, CFD verification and validation (V&V) studies are carried out including grid and time-step convergence. CFD-MBD results for 2DOF cylinder drop show that 2-way coupling is required to capture coupled physics. Overall, 2-way results are validated with an overall average error value of E=5.6%DR for 2DOF cylinder drop. For WAM-V in calm water, CFD-MBD 2-way results for relative pod angle are validated with E=14.2%DR. For single-wave, CFD-MBD results show that 2-way coupling significantly improves the prediction of the peak amplitude in pontoon motions, while the trough amplitudes in suspension motions are under-predicted. The current CFD-MBD 2-way results for single-wave are validated with E=17%DR. For rough-water, simulations are carried out in regular head waves representative of the irregular seas. CFD-MBD 2-way results are validation with E=23%D for statistical values and the Fourier analysis results, which is reasonable given the differences between simulation waves and experiments.

Zhang, Shuai. "Chickens Selected for High Body Weight Show Relative Impairment in Fatty Acid Oxidation Efficiency and Metabolic Flexibility in Skeletal Muscle and White Adipose Tissue." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/24536.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to adapt fuel usage to nutrient availability is termed metabolic flexibility, and is influenced by activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). The Virginia lines of chickens are a unique model of anorexia and obesity that have resulted from 56 generations of artificial selection for high (HWS) or low (LWS) juvenile body weight. We hypothesized that hyperphagia and obesity in juvenile HWS chickens are associated with altered fatty acid oxidation efficiency and metabolic flexibility in tissues associated with energy sensing and storage, and relative cellular hypertrophy in white adipose tissue. Hypothalamus, liver, Pectoralis major, gastrocnemius, abdominal fat, clavicular fat and subcutaneous fat were collected from juvenile (56-65 day-old) HWS and LWS chickens for metabolic, gene expression and histological assays. The HWS chickens had reduced fatty acid oxidation efficiency in abdominal fat (P < 0.0001) and reduced rates of oxidation in abdominal fat and gastrocnemius (P < 0.0001) as compared to LWS. There was reduced citrate synthase activity in white adipose tissue (P < 0.0001) and greater metabolic inflexibility in skeletal muscle (P = 0.006) of HWS compared to LWS. Greater pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4) and forkhead box O1 (FoxO1) mRNA were found in skeletal muscle and white adipose tissue of 56-day-old HWS than LWS. Expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in all adipose tissue depots was greater (P < 0.05) in LWS than in HWS chickens. The HWS chickens had larger (P < 0.0001) and fewer (P < 0.0001) adipocytes per unit area than LWS. These results suggest that the HWS chickens have impaired metabolic flexibility and fatty acid oxidation efficiency due to an up-regulation of pyruvate dehydrogenase activity to accommodate the influx of acetyl CoA from fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle and white adipose tissue. These metabolic adaptations can be linked to differences in gene expression regulation and body composition between the lines. Adipocyte cellularity data are consistent with greater oxidative efficiency in the adipose tissue of LWS, because of the greater number of unfilled cells in all depots that were sampled. Results can be extrapolated to agricultural production in the understanding of factors regulating the amount of lipid deposition in chicken carcass fat. Results may also provide insight into eating disorders and the development of obesity.
