Abstract:

One of the biggest problems of our time is the global warming. A direct result of this phenomena is the melting of ice of the glaciers on the north and the south pole. As this continues, the melted ice will contribute to an increase of the sea level, and may cause enormous natural disasters. To be able to prevent this, it’s important to study its affects. This reports contains a concept study of a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, a UAV, set on the coast of Antarctica by the Australian owned base Davis Station to document the changes and retracting of the glacier borderline. The purpose of the aircraft is to scout a pre-determined path whilst documenting the glaciers with photography from above.

Abstract:

This project explores the dimensional relationship between body and dress through using features of corsetry. Where is the garment tight? Where do we place volume and where do we show skin? This project addresses these questions and the construction of dress through broadening the concept of corsetry. With the vision to improve the relationship between body and dress through exploring new methods for an existing technique. Searching for alternative construction techniques in dress which enhances the circular relationship between body, dress and form. By exploring new working methods that includes the body in the process of constructing garments, the corsetry tools has been used to investigate how the garment stays on the body in terms of how we tighten it to the body and by that also give the garment its shape. The project is practice based and built on concrete experiments. The relationship between body, fabric and form has been explored through working hands on with the material on the own body. The design method was developed in the beginning of the project. Further, it was carried out through using rectangular and tube shaped fabrics together with features of corsetry, mainly focusing on eyelets and lacing. Resulting in both a new method for an existing technique, as well as a result that expresses new possibilities in the composition of the dressed body. It also proposes alternative ways of constructing and wearing garments, where the body and the garment work together.

Abstract:

In the extreme climate and isolation of Antarctica, much of the built environment exists only as an assemblage of sterile boxes placed in the landscape without consideration of the needs of their occupants or their impact on the environment. In an area of limited resources, an abundance of solar and wind resources is seldom utilized to its full potential. Scientists and support crews spend months at a time living in isolation within the confines of small outposts and stations. Confinement in cramped and impersonal surroundings in this hostile environment can have devastating effects on the health and well-being of research teams and crews. The designs of many facilities rarely venture beyond the minimum programmatic requirements, failing to explore the possibility to become something more. The purely functional engineer's design approach, focusing heavily on initial cost, has been the mainstay of Antarctic architecture until recently. This attitude is beginning to be challenged by designs that focus on sustainability and the psychological impact on their inhabitants. Isolation and climactic conditions should not serve as an excuse for an incohesive atomistic design, but as motivation for a responsible, holistic solution. The technology exists to drastically reduce our negative environmental and carbon footprint in Antarctica by creating more responsible research facilities that fully utilize available renewable energy resources, while providing a superior working and living environment that meets the physical and psychological needs of its occupants. During the austral summer of 2008-2009, the world's first zero emissions polar research station is set to open. The innovative design of the Belgian Princess Elisabeth station can be used as a model for studying the potentials of sustainable and climactically adapted architectural design in Antarctica. I propose to further explore the possibilities of renewable energy, waste management, and prefabrication to design a zero emissions research facility with minimal impact that is responsive to its environment, while adequately providing for the needs of its occupants within the unique and extreme conditions of the Antarctic.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to understand how people working in California’s San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley technology industry love one another platonically in the workplace, as well as what effects they perceive from this love. Through this constructivist grounded theory study, a theory was developed. This Work-based Platonic Love Theory involves workplace relationships that are heavily centered around work itself. These relationships can begin in admiration for one another, conflict with one another, or even dislike. They are transformed into loving relationships through shared experiences of work-related hardship, challenging or innovative work, and/or spending long work hours together. Participants describe the relationships as familial, often team-oriented, caring, and rooted in work. Effects of these work relationships include the perception of greater individual and team success, high performance, and shatterproof teams. Work-based Platonic Love Theory resulted from data produced by in-depth interviews with 17 participants who reported experiences with platonic love in San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley technology firms. The study underscores the value of platonic love in the workplace to the work itself, to teams, and to individuals. It also suggests a heavily work-centric nature of loving relationships within the technology industry in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley.

Abstract:

The unique advantages for astronomy on the Antarctic plateau are now well established. In particular, Dome C, Antarctica is potentially one of the best new sites for optical, infrared and sub-millimeter astronomy, presenting the opportunity to build unique astronomical instruments. Located high on the Antarctic plateau, Dome C offers low wind, clear skies, and negligible precipitation. This thesis addresses three additional properties of the site relevant to optical astronomy-sky brightness, atmospheric extinction and optical turbulence. The sky at an optical astronomy site must be dark, and the atmosphere very clean with minimal light extinction. At present little is known from an astronomer's perspective about the optical sky brightness and atmospheric extinction at most Antarctic sites. The high latitude of Dome C means that the Sun spends a relatively small amount of time far below the horizon, implying longer periods of astronomical twilight and less optical dark time than other sites, especially those close to the equator. We review the contributions to sky brightness at high-latitude sites, and calculate the amount of usable dark time at Dome C. We also explore the implications of the limited sky coverage of high-latitude sites, and review optical extinction data from the South Pole. A proposal to extend the amount of usable dark time through the use of polarising filters is examined, and we present the design and calibration of an instrument (called Nigel) to measure the brightness, spectrum and temporal characteristics of the twilight and night sky. The atmospheric turbulence profile above an astronomical site limits the achievable resolution and sensitivity of a telescope. The atmospheric conditions above high plateau Antarctic sites are different to temperate sites; the boundary layer of turbulence is confined very close to the surface, and the upper atmosphere turbulence very weak. We present the first winter-time turbulence profiles of the atmosphere above Dome C, and characterise the site in terms of the achievable precision for photometry and astrometry, and the isoplanatic angle and coherence time for the adaptive optics.

Abstract:

The Republic of Korea (ROK) joined the Antarctic Treaty in 1986 as the 33rd member and became a consultant party in 1989. Despite its geographical remoteness from the region and the geopolitical pressures it faces at home, ROK has made great progress in its scientific research in Antarctica as well as the Arctic. In particular, since the inauguration of the Lee Myung Bak administration in 2008, Seoul has accelerated its commitment to polar research by announcing that it would set up a second permanent base in the Antarctic continent and build a new 7,000 ton ice breaker. South Korea is the 9th largest economy in the world and is now seeking ways to expand its global political influence. The Korean government sees its expansion into Antarctica and the Arctic as part of its path to a greater global leadership role. This thesis explores the reasons behind South Korea’s increased involvement in Antarctica, while referencing the activities of its Arctic programme. It profiles various bodies involved in maintaining and negotiating ROK’s Antarctic presence and voice on Antarctic affairs; it discusses Seoul’s core interests in the Antarctic continent and the polar regions overall, which help to shape its Antarctic policy.

Abstract:

Late Cretaceous angiosperm leaf floras from the Antarctic Peninsula have been studied and described for the first time. The Hidden Lake Formation (Coniacian) and Santa Marta Formation (Santonian-early Campanian) floras were preserved within shallow marine strata exposed on James Ross Island. This area was located at approximately 65°S during the Late Cretaceous. These fossils represent the remains of vegetation growing in the southern high latitudes on an emergent volcanic arc. The plants probably grew on the delta top and along the edge of streams. The leaf fossils are preserved as isolated and fragmentary impressions and although cuticular anatomy is not present, the angiosperm leaves show the well-preserved fine detail of leaf architecture. These leaves have been drawn and described using Hickey's (1979) terminology. Attempts were made to group the leaves into morphotypes to allow reconstruction of floral composition and palaeoclimates. Several methods of grouping leaves were used, including visual grouping, Single character classification, and multivariate approaches. Multivariate statistical analysis allowed many characters to be considered simultaneously and even allowed fragmentary specimens, which were harder to deal with visually, to be evaluated. Clustering analysis was performed and dendrograms were produced for the Hidden Lake Formation and Santa Marta Formation floras, which were used in conjunction with visual assessments to group leaves with distinct morphologies into morphotypes. A total of 41 morphotypes were identified, 30 in the Hidden Lake Formation flora and 31 in the Santa Marta Formation flora, with 20 in common. Detailed descriptions of each morphotype and representative illustrations are presented. Comparisons have been drawn with fossil and living angiosperm leaves. Architectural characteristics suggest that some of the leaves may have affinities with the Cunoniaceae, Lauraceae, Sterculiaceae, Nothofagaceae, Myrtaceae and Elaeocarpaceae. If botanical affinities can be confirmed, many of these occurrences would extend the ranges of angiosperm taxa on the Antarctic Peninsula. Palaeoclimatic interpretation of the leaf floras included comparisons with possible nearest living relatives, analysis of leaf margins, shapes and sizes, and the application of simple linear regression and multiple linear regression models. The climate is considered to have been warm and moist. Mean annual temperature estimates of 12-21°C were provided for the Hidden Lake Formation flora and 14-23°C for the Santa Marta Formation flora. Evaluation of published data suggests that these Coniacian-early Campanian leaf floras may reflect the warmest time during the Cretaceous in Antarctica.

El presente trabajo de investigación se realizó para validar la viabilidad de crear una empresa dedicada a la decoración temática de habitaciones de dormitorio para parejas de la ciudad de Lima que desean evitar la infidelidad; es así como se crea DECO-LOVE una empresa que permitirá experimentar un momento romántico y fantasioso. A Continuación, se mencionará las partes más relevantes del trabajo de investigación: El Planeamiento Estratégico sirvió para tener una visión clara de las oportunidades que existe en el entorno. En el cual, se verificó que existe una tendencia alta de crecimiento sobre los temas sexuales. La investigación de mercado ayudó a conocer cuáles eran las necesidades del público objetivo. Y con ello se decidió perseverar en el proyecto, ya que en el mercado no existe una empresa que pueda satisfacer esa necesidad. En el plan económico y financiero se visualiza que el proyecto es rentable ya que el VPN es mayor a cero y cuenta con una TIR del 20 % para este proyecto y el 23 % para el inversionista. En base a lo mencionado en las partes relevantes, se puede hacer una idea de lo atractivo que sería el proyecto en el mercado, debido que no existe competencia alguna. Esta oportunidad, haría que la empresa sea uno de los pioneros en el sector. Finalmente, se recomienda la implementación del proyecto ya que los resultados obtenidos son favorables para su ejecución y para el inversionista.
This present research work was done to validate the viability of creating a company dedicated to the thematic bedroom decoration for couples in the city of Lima who want to avoid infidelity; that is how DECO-LOVE is created as a company that allows to experience a romantic and imaginative moment. Relevant parts of the research work will be mentioned as follows: The Strategic Planning served just to have a clear vision of the opportunities that exists in the surroundings. It was noticed that a high growth tendency exists related to sexual issues. The Market Research helped to know which the target audience’s necessities were and with that, it was decided to persist in the project because there is no company within the market that can satisfy such necessity. It can be seen that the project is profitable within the economic and financial plan because the VPN is greater than zero and has a 20% IRR (Internal Rate of Return) for this project and 23% for the investor. On the basis of the relevant parts, it can be thought how attractive the project would be in the market due to the non-existing competition. This opportunity would make the company lead the way in its area. Finally, it is recommended to implement the project because the obtained results are favorable for its execution and investor.

Set at The Turning Point Lounge in New Orleans, as well as the countrysides of Madisonville and Bush, Louisiana, the video takes us into a world where classic Motown style meets the world of campy horror films. Voodoo Love is also the first local jazz video to be produced in high-definition video. It includes appearances by Lischelle Brown, Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Alfred Doucette, blues player Big Al Carson and the singing trio Mahogany Blue. The video was authored to DVD and includes extras features on the making of the video, including an extended behind the scenes documentary.

Love Song is an essay about romance, passion, obsession, attraction, Eros, intoxication, infatuation, to fall in love and love. Love songs, as artworks, are almost always directed towards a nameless “you” and this essay wants to talk to you. The text might be seen as a way to create and rewrite something, a performance to understand other performances, a dwelling on past relationships, a love letter, or just a text for me to vent you with others that have been thinking about you. I would love to hear Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Chris Kraus, Beyoncé, Bell Hooks, Anaïs Nin and Taylor Swift talk to each other about art and romances, but because that is an impossible dream I try to connect them and many other thinkers, artists and singers through language. One of them, Roland Barthes once wrote: "Language is a skin: I rub my language against the other. It is as if I had worlds instead of fingers, or fingers at the tip of my worlds."[1] Love Song is, more than anything else an attempted to touch you, a strategy to better understand the way you made and make me feel. Abstract:

This hermeneutic study explores the phenomenon of love-suicide using Cleopatra VII as a case study. This research explores a variety of depth psychological perspectives of death and destruction, suicide, and romantic love in order to gain an understanding of the meaning of death for the psyche and the archetypal underpinnings of suicide in the context of romantic love. Through investigating how the experiences and situations generated by love and generated in love may enliven the archetypal energy of suicide, defined as “destructive reconstruction,” this investigation establishes a basis for the notion that the shadow side of love may pull the soul to suicide.

This study uses the myth of Cleopatra’s love-suicide to test the ideas developed regarding the soul’s pull to suicide in romantic love. By imagining and exploring the projections and identifications Cleopatra may have held and how they may have impacted her love relationship with Antony and her suicide, this study demonstrates how the alchemy of being in love can deconstruct and reconstruct psyche and how love can dissolve the ego and materialize new life. The study concludes that this deconstructive process, an alchemical dissolution, is directed by the Self and ultimately may lead to physical death. This study’s symbolic inquiry into Cleopatra’s love-suicide illustrates that unlocking the mausoleum of the heart and exposing the interior darkness is a destructive process that is also potentially creative. That is, it may uncover the buried treasure within or bury the body that houses it.

The essay studies the character Marie's search for empowerment in Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine. As a mixed-blood she has difficulty to find respect within the white community because she is considered Native American Indian. However, the Native American Indian community sees her as ´dirty and lowlife´due to her whiteness. She tries different strattegies to form an identity and to find love, power and respect. In the convent she wants to be the best Catholic and find respect within the white community whilst later in life she returns to her Native American Indian tribe where she searches for respect throught marriage and motherhood. The theory used is sociology of religion.

This thesis is concerned with the dynamics of the middle atmosphere over the southern-most continent on our planet, Antarctica. Building on previous observational and theoretical efforts to understand the dynamics of this region of the atmosphere, the work encompasses instrument improvements as well as data analysis studies of gravity waves in the lower and middle stratosphere, tides in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere, and short-period planetary waves in the stratosphere and mesosphere. An upgrade of the Medium-Frequency Spaced Antenna (MFSA) radar at Scott Base, Antarctica, was carried out in 2004/5 in order to ensure continued operation and enhance its capabilities to measure gravity waves. As a result, the quality of the wind measurements was greatly enhanced and the amount of data collected is now greater by a factor of approximately 15 compared with before the upgrade. Analysis of over two decades of wind velocity data from Scott Base yields a reliable climatology of the dynamics of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere in this area, namely the tidal oscillations and the background winds. In addition, interannual variability is assessed and periodicities of approximately 11 years and strong positive trends in tidal amplitudes are reported. Mechanisms that could explain the observed behaviour are proposed. The data are then combined with wind measurements from Halley, the longitudinal conjugate site, in order to study the zonal character of the semi-diurnal tide. Zonal wavenumber 1 and 2 waves are both found and mechanisms that could explain the generation of a wavenumber 1 component are suggested. Two further sets of MFSA radar wind measurements are used to investigate the behaviour of planetary waves with periods of between two and four days in the Antarctic middle atmosphere. Satellite temperature measurements further help to create a more complete picture of these waves. Baroclinic and barotropic instabilities, which result from shears of the zonal wind, appear to be responsible for much of the observed wave activity. In addition, a quasi-to day wave event in mid-May 2005 with unusually large amplitudes is examined and suggested to be linked to a solar proton event. Gravity wave activity over Antarctica is studied using temperature profiles obtained through the satellite radio occultation technique. Although the measurements are restricted to below 35 km altitude, high-resolution temperature profiles allow conclusions to be drawn about the seasonal, geographical, and height distribution of gravity wave activity. Mountain waves are found to be important over the Antarctic Peninsula and the Transantarctic mountains where they contribute more than 20% of the observed wave activity in the lower stratosphere. In addition, the analysis indicates the importance of critical-level filtering and Doppler-shifting.

Abstract:

Antarctic ice shelves play a key role in the global climate system, acting as important sites for the cooling of shelf waters, thereby facilitating deep and bottom water formation. Many of the processes that take place under large ice shelves can be observed more conveniently beneath smaller ice shelves such as Fimbul Ice Shelf, an ice shelf in the eastern Weddell Sea. Fimbul Ice Shelf and nearby ice shelves might also play a significant regional role: although no bottom water is produced in this area, it is thought that Fimbul Ice Shelf and nearby ice shelves precondition the shelf waters that ultimately are converted to Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW) in the southern Weddell Sea. Using the first data ever to be collected beneath an ice shelf from an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), as well as data from the vicinity of the ice shelf using traditional oceanographic methods, this thesis discusses the circulation and processes occurring beneath the ice shelf. This has been supplemented by using a coupled ice shelf/ocean model, POLAIR, to simulate the circulation, melting, and tides under Fimbul Ice Shelf and in the surrounding area. Data from the ice shelf cavity show relatively large variability in temperatures, but all within approx. 0.25 °C of the freezing point. Melt rates are found to be lower than some previous model studies, but in better agreement with observations and glaciological models. The base of the ice shelf was found to be rough in places, corresponding to `flow traces' visible in satellite imagery. This could have implications for mixing beneath the ice shelf, at least in these limited areas. The Autosub AUV was found to be a useful platform for measuring hydrography and ice shelf cavity geometry with spatial coverage and resolution not available from surface measurements.

Antarctica provides some of the most extreme environments on earth. Low temperatures, low water availability and nutrient deficiency are contributing factors to the limited colonisation of Antarctic biotopes, particularly in the continental Dry Valleys. The survival of microorganisms in this harsh continent provides the basis for the significance of this study. This study aimed to explore microbial phylotypic diversity across a 500 m altitudinal transect in the Miers Dry Valley, Ross Desert, East Antarctica. The study also attempted to infer from phylogenetic data, the possible presence of indicative phenotypes which might contribute to a functional microbial community.
