Whang, Chloe. "Simultaneity Bias in Campaign Spending Games." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/770.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, I replicate Erikson and Palfrey (2000) who propose that the simultaneity problem in measuring the effects of candidate spending can be resolved by restricting the sample to close elections. Vote-on-spending effects, which vary with the expected closeness of the election outcome in a systematic way, determine the extent of simultaneity bias. The simultaneity bias becomes progressively more severe as the anticipated vote margin decreases, plaguing the estimates of spending-on-vote effects on the full sample. In the range of a 50-50 expected vote, however, the vote-on-spending effects approach zero. Thus, by restricting the sample to extremely close races, I obtain unbiased estimates of candidate spending effects. I then extend their model using data that includes elections that took place after a pair of major campaign finance reforms: the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 and the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling of 2010. The BCRA heightens the perceived effectiveness of candidate spending by removing the hidden substitute for candidates’ campaign funds, namely, soft money. After the Citizens United ruling, however, as soft money starts to play a crucial role in electoral campaigns, candidates’ own funds matter less. The ruling appears to amplify incumbency advantage, perhaps because incumbents take advantage of their non-monetary incumbency benefits to attract soft money donations. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate in academia over the causal connection between candidate spending and vote share by presenting evidence that campaign spending has significant effects on election outcomes.

Vetharaniam, I. "Simultaneity and test-theories of relativity." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Physics, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8027.

Full text
Abstract:
Two intertwined issues in special relativity-clock synchronisation and the experimental verification of special relativity-are investigated, and novel results are given in both areas. The validity of the conventionality of distant simultaneity is supported, and the special theory of relativity is recast in a general synchrony "gauge" to reveal the operational significance of synchronisation in measurement and prediction within special relativity. For similar reasons, the Mansouri-Sexl test-theory is extended to allow arbitrary synchrony to be properly taken into account in the verification of relativistic theories. The generalised test-theory is used to analyse recent experiments and to demonstrate that there is no basis to claims that simultaneity relations are empirically definable. Synchrony considerations are extended to the case of a non-inertial observer exhibiting arbitrary motion within the context of any metric theory: a local co-ordinate system is developed using differential geometric techniques and a generalisation of the Frenet frame. The analysis used for the accelerated observer is adapted to produce a test-theory of local Lorentz invariance in a space of arbitrary curvature. The test-theory incorporates the conventionality of distant simultaneity which, combined with the geometric approach, illuminates the role of synchrony in test-theories. The Sagnac effect is investigated within this new test-theory, enabling the use of a precision ring laser, such as the Canterbury Ring Laser, to bound parameters of the theory and thus to test local Lorentz invariance.

This thesis revisits the question of time in the novel. It does so by questioning whether this genre tells us anything new about temporality. In particular, this thesis looks at the novel's capacity to depict different temporal forms such as the representation of simultaneous action and whether such a capacity is constitutive of its "novelness".

af, Burén Ann. "Living Simultaneity : On religion among semi-secular Swedes." Doctoral thesis, Södertörns högskola, Religionsvetenskap, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-26801.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims at contributing to a critical discussion on the supposedly far-reaching secularity of Sweden on the one hand, and on the incongruence and inconsistency of lived religion on the other. At the center are people referred to as semi-secular Swedes – a group that is often neglected in the study of religion. These people do not go to church or get involved in any other alternative organized spiritual activities, neither are they actively opposed to religion or entirely indifferent to it. Most of them describe the ways they are – or are not – religious as in line with the majority patterns in Swedish society. The study is qualitative in method and the material has been gathered through interviews and a questionnaire. It offers a close reading of 28 semi-secular Swedes’ ways of talking about and relating to religion, particularly in reference to their everyday lives and their own experiences, and it analyzes the material with a focus on incongruences. By exploring how the term religion is employed vernacularly by the respondents, the study pinpoints one particular feature in the material, namely simultaneity. The concept of simultaneity is descriptive and puts emphasis on a ‘both and’ approach in (1) the way the respondents ascribe meaning to the term religion, (2) how they talk about themselves in relation to different religious designations, and (3) how they interpret experiences that they single out as ‘out-of-the-ordinary’. These simultaneities are explained and theorized through analyses focusing on intersubjective and discursive processes. In relation to theorizing on religion and religious people this study offers empirical material that nuance a dichotomous understanding of ‘the religious’ and ‘the secular’. In relation to methodology it is argued that the salience of simultaneity in the material shows that when patterns of religiosity among semi-secular Swedes are studied there is a need to be attentive to expressions of complexity, contradiction and incongruity.

Morgan-Evans, T. J. "Towards an aesthetic of simultaneity : conceptual art and beyond." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1356298/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that we reconsider the philosophical premises which prefigure our encounter with art today. The thematic of ‘simultaneity’ is proposed as one means which might enable this to be achieved. Mapping the notion of simultaneity’s constant presence in art and philosophy associated with Conceptual art after 1960, I look at how this un-examined modality lies at the core of some of our understandings of the subject, its object and the relationship between the two. I also consider how this theme leads us back towards a territory of possibility that re-invigors the claims and concerns of materialism. This is done systematically, though idiomatically, through the careful analysis of the art work itself, in equal and non-hierarchical tandem with theoretical models. The thesis began as a speculative enquiry into what it could possibly mean that simultaneity seemed so central and embedded within aesthetic practices. It became a series of re-approaches to art whose most significant readings seem to over enthusiastically deny the possibility of the spectator’s encounter with the real, or a relatable contact with matter, in favour of a post-structuralist model of analysis. The arrangement of the thesis is not entirely chronological, though historical contextualisation is important, it, rather, adheres to a narrative drive which begins with the systems and language-based aesthetics of the late sixties, and moves further in the direction of material possibility; of an unpredetermined and contingent space in which to encounter the work of art.

Abstract:
COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
Passados, Presentes e Presenças: A Simultaneidade Histórica em Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht.
Pasts, Presents and Presences: Historical Simultaneity in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. Taking Hans U. Gumbrecht´s In 1926: Living on the Edge of Time as a starting point, it is the purpose of this study to explore and scrutinize certain specific aspects and unresolved questions present in current Literary Studies. The somewhat whimsical User´s Manual is indicative of the experimental nature of his project. The central question will fall upon the capabilities of a written book (as opposed to other media) to produce or, rather, to re- produce past experiences-you should feel in 1926. Seeking, then, the effect of (almost) perfect immediacy, Gumbrecht hopes to help formulate or contribute to what could be classified as Sensorial Historiography - wherein the act of generating presence is to be understood as opposed to Hermeneutics. Sharing his impulse to evoke past worlds, this paper intends to develop a thorough discussion centered upon Gumbrecht´s own notion of production of presence. Inevitably, this includes a short analysis of his theories on the materialities of communication. In addition, the essay will also attempt to draw connections and parallels between his notions of historiography and those of the Annales school in France - i.e. Michel de Certeau, François Furet and Paul Veyne who, in their new proposals of historiography, offer interesting counterpoints to the non- hermeneutical model. Therefore, the question which will guide and orient the course of this study will be: would it be plausible and relevant to theorize about these new (and very experimental) forms of representation, which seem to privilege affections and sensibilities over more rational approaches - albeit without excluding them entirely?

Abstract:
The postmodernist technique of cut-ups, that is, creating new art from the pieces of old material, has insinuated itself throughout contemporary culture. Everything is connected; everything is a remix. Taking these principles as its premise, this thesis explores the design and implementation of an expressive, computer-aided, batch audio creation environment, and then further extends those principles to hypothesise a cloud-based, distributed environment for supporting long-range collaboration. Traditional multimedia editing and creation tools are dominated by a direct manipulation interface, and generally depend greatly upon user expertise to find and splice samples of interest. When distributed multimedia manipulation systems are studied, discussion is typically dominated by the challenges faced by systems and network to deliver multimedia data with high throughput and reliability.

Bubna, Mikaela. "Temporal Recalibration: Does Awareness Influence How We Perceive Time?" Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41950.

Full text
Abstract:
After exposure to a short, constant delay between voluntary movement and sensory stimuli, temporal recalibration (TR) arises to realign asynchronous stimuli. The objective of this study was to determine if awareness of the temporal lag between a motor response (i.e., a keypress) and a sensory event (i.e., a visual flash) is necessary for TR to occur. We further investigated whether manipulating the motor and judgment tasks required modifies the influence of awareness on TR due to the cognitive processes engaged. Participants (n = 22) were randomly divided between two groups (Group 1: Aware and Group 2: Unaware). The Aware group was told of the temporal lag between their keypress and visual flash at the beginning of the experiment, whereas the Unaware group was not. All participants completed 8 blocks of trials, in which the motor tasks (e.g., a single or repetitive tap), judgment tasks (e.g., judging the order of the keypress in relation to the visual flash or judging whether the two stimuli were simultaneous or not), and temporal lag between keypress and visual flash (e.g., a 0 ms or 100 ms lag) varied. TR was determined by comparing judgments between corresponding blocks of trials in which the temporal lag was 0 ms to 100 ms. Results revealed that both the Aware and Unaware groups of participants demonstrated TR across both motor and judgment tasks, and that the magnitude of TR did not vary across Aware and Unaware participants or tasks. Thus, results of the present study revealed that awareness of a temporal lag does not influence the magnitude of motor-sensory TR achieved.

Feist, Richard. "Spreading time through space: An analysis of the conventionality of intra-frame simultaneity." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6622.

Full text
Abstract:
It is shown that the simultaneity of distant events is taken for granted by some major thinkers, most notably Leibniz and Newton, preceding Einstein. However, in 1905, the STR's examination, and subsequent reconstruction, of this assumption, engendered two types of simultaneity: intra-frame and inter-frame. The former is the focus of this investigation and deals with the simultaneity of distant, yet relatively stationary, events. The latter involves the simultaneity of distant, yet relatively moving, events. Einstein glossed over the former, briefly claiming that distant clocks are synchronized according to a definition. Reichenbach interpreted this as illustrating that the STR supports a conventionalist reading. The synchronization of distant clocks within the same inertial frame is only possible according to a convention. This is known as the conventionality of simultaneity, not to be confused with the relativity of simultaneity which deals with the setting of clocks in different inertial frames. Grunbaum follows Reichenbach's view and argues further that inter-frame relativity of simultaneity must be understood on the basis of intra-frame conventionality of simultaneity. It is argued that Grunbaum occupies a middle position between the two major approaches to the philosophy of space-time. Grunbaum's defence of the conventionality of simultaneity is the main concern of this investigation. Reichenbach's a priori, inter-theoretical conventionalism is clearly separated from Grunbaum's a posteriori, intra-theoretical conventionalism. This is done because the two thinkers are often misleadingly equated. They are linked simply because a particular argument, which connects conventionality and light signals, is shared. The moral of this chapter is not only that shared conclusions do not entail shared premises, but more importantly, shared arguments do not entail shared approaches. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
This MA thesis seeks to apply Henri Bergson’s theory of time to a reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and David Fincher’s film adaptation of the text, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. By applying Bergson’s notions of durée and simultaneity, timeless moments will be seen to emerge in the text and the film. I place Fitzgerald’s text in context with other seminal modernist works in order to provide a study of the importance of the story within its time period. Through Deleuze’s application of Bergson to cinema, I analyze the evolution of the time-image within Fincher’s film, and place it within the context of a cinema of time. Ultimately, this thesis begins a discussion of the importance of how F. Scott Fitzgerald and Fincher’s works contribute meditations on time in their respective time periods and media.

Eurythmy is an art of movement that expresses music and speech. This dissertation explores eurythmy's musical field, called tone-eurythmy, in its multifaceted appearances, background and within its philosophical context. Tone-eurythmy, carried out by performers moving in space and time, makes music visible. It transforms music into a new movement-art form, that of audible-visible music, by expressing musical components as well as the artistic intentions within a composition and those held by the performing artists. The dissertation examines how musical concepts are seen by eurythmists to integrate ideas of wholeness and to understand music as both audible and inaudible. It draws on studies and findings from music psychology to show distinct effects of musical elements on the human being, and to indicate the similarities between those and the qualitative expressions of music through tone-eurythmy.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on multiple identity constructions and symbolic uses of language among Mexican-Americans in Arizona. The concept of a homogeneous "Mexican-American community" is shown to be a construct--an imagined community. Building on anthropological conceptualizations of identity, and studies in language and identity, a framework of the simultaneity of experience focuses the analysis in terms of ethnicity, class, and gender, framing a discussion of the emotional dimension of minority status and the symbolic function of language in identity. Rather than offer a comprehensive analysis of a bounded Mexican-American identity, this paper offers insight into the construction of multiple identities, through the analysis of discourse from a small group of people; individual voices are highlighted through the use of case studies. Conceptualizations of identity construction are problematized, including the common expectation of heterogeneity in ethnic groups such as those of Mexican heritage.

In this research I have explored the performance making process of world renowned director Robert Lepage. This exploration informed my own process, creating an original performance called GAIJIN, where my roles included producer / director / designer and co-writer. The practice-led research strategy employed in this research has allowed me to navigate the sometimes slippery slope of connecting various performance discourses with the pragmatics of the performance making process. The reason for this research is my strong interest in the director’s role and my affinity with the practice of Robert Lepage. My observation of the performance making process of Robert Lepage prompted the creation of a conceptual framework informed by Hans-Thies Lehmann’s work Postdramatic Theatre. These theoretical concerns were then further investigated in the creation of my own show. This research process has uncovered a performance making process that foregrounds the working principles of simultaneity and synaesthesia, which together offer a changed conception of the performance text in live performance. Simultaneity is a space of chaotic interaction where many resources are used to build a perpetually evolving performance text. Synaesthesia is the type of navigation required – an engagement consisting of interrelated sense-impressions that uniquely connect the performance makers with the abundance of content and stimulus; they search for poetic connections and harmonious movement between the resources. This engagement relies on intuitive playmaking where the artists must exhibit restraint and reserve to privilege the interaction of resources and observe the emerging performance. This process has the potential to create a performance that is built by referential layers of theatrical signifiers and impressions. This research offers an insight into the practices of Robert Lepage as well as a lens through which to view other unique devising processes. It also offers a performance making language that is worthy of consideration by all performance makers, from directors to performers. The significance of this process is its inherent qualities of innovation produced by all manner of art forms and resources interacting in a unique performance making space.

Abstract:
This project consists of an original composition, Voci Lontani, and a critical essay about the composition. In this piece, the idea of musical simultaneity is explored. Therefore, the piece focuses on the idea of contrast: between measured rhythms and indeterminate rhythms, between tonality and atonality, and between musics in separate tempos. In order to explore the significance of musical simultaneity, four important compositional concepts-the simultaneous juxtaposition of different musics, polyrhythmic structure, controlled indeterminacy, and quotation-are discussed. Also, several examples of twentieth-century music that use these concepts are analyzed in the essay.

Abstract:
This thesis examines Judith Butler's account of performative agency in relation to its critics, in particular, the question of whether Butler's thesis disavows materiality and thereby agency. These questions are answered by reading Butler's work through the work of Merleau-Ponty, in particular, by comparing Butler's account of performative agency to Merleau-Ponty's account of bodily intentionality. It is argued that a common ground underlies these featured concepts. I identify this common ground through the institution of the concept "simultaneity" to express a relationship of reciprocity between meaning and materiality through which ontological and epistemological significance is, reciprocally, sedimented and transformed; stabilised and destabilised.

Abstract:
The concept of economic development has broadened to include environmental quality and population health. Interactions between income and pollution, income and health, and pollution and health have been studied separately by researchers from various disciplines. This study attempts to unify several different research strands and analyze simultaneous interactions between population health, measured by the infant mortality rate, pollution, and income in one endogenous system. Socioeconomic, racial, and rural urban disparities in infant mortality, pollution, and income are analyzed. The simultaneous equation system, estimated using the two-stage least squares method, tests whether pollution effects on infant mortality are outweighed by income effects. The study finds that income is a stronger determinant of infant mortality than pollution. Evidence for the environmental Kuznets curve is ambiguous. Disparities in infant mortality, pollution, and income are correlated with counties rural-urban status, income inequality, and ethnic diversity. Regional patterns identify wide geographical differences in levels of pollution, income, and infant mortality. The Southeast region stands out as a region with the highest infant mortality rate, relatively high levels of air pollution and chemical releases, and low per capita incomes.

Abstract:
Dealing with latent constructs (loaded by reflective and congeneric measures) cross-culturally compared means studying how these unobserved variables vary, and/or covary each other, after controlling for possibly disturbing cultural forces. This yields to the so-called ‘measurement invariance’ matter that refers to the extent to which data collected by the same multi-item measurement instrument (i.e., self-reported questionnaire of items underlying common latent constructs) are comparable across different cultural environments. As a matter of fact, it would be unthinkable exploring latent variables heterogeneity (e.g., latent means; latent levels of deviations from the means (i.e., latent variances), latent levels of shared variation from the respective means (i.e., latent covariances), levels of magnitude of structural path coefficients with regard to causal relations among latent variables) across different populations without controlling for cultural bias in the underlying measures. Furthermore, it would be unrealistic to assess this latter correction without using a framework that is able to take into account all these potential cultural biases across populations simultaneously. Since the real world ‘acts’ in a simultaneous way as well. As a consequence, I, as researcher, may want to control for cultural forces hypothesizing they are all acting at the same time throughout groups of comparison and therefore examining if they are inflating or suppressing my new estimations with hierarchical nested constraints on the original estimated parameters. Multi Sample Structural Equation Modeling-based Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MS-SEM-based CFA) still represents a dominant and flexible statistical framework to work out this potential cultural bias in a simultaneous way. With this dissertation I wanted to make an attempt to introduce new viewpoints on measurement invariance handled under covariance-based SEM framework by means of a consumer behavior modeling application on functional food choices.

Abstract:
This work brings a contrastive study about the time connectors which indicate simultaneity wenn, als and während, from German, and quando and enquanto, from Brasilian Portuguese. Based on the theory, developed by some linguists from IDS (Institut für Deutsche Sprache), Germany, this study verifies in which semantic domains (temporal, epistemic and/or deontic) these connectors appear, considering the syntactic-semantic-pragmatic context of the corpora examples. The mentioned context corresponds to the following factors: a) the verb tenses and moods of the sentences; b) the verb aspect; c) the valor de factividade of the states of affairs; d) the simultaneity between the states of affairs; e) the semantic relations which the connector can establish and; f) the pragmatic factors. The pragmatic factors considered in this thesis are connected to the communicative-situational context, in which the sentences appear. Then, this work intend to verify the relation between the semantic domains and the mentioned context, based on the hypothesis that there are some syntactic, semantic and pragmatic elements which can influence on the sentences interpretation (sentences which contain the selected connectors); seeing that this influency can occur differently in German and in Portuguese.

Abstract:
Compound formation is a very productive phenomenon in sign languages. Pioneering studies of ASL (American Sign Language) identified compounds formed sequentially, which are characterized by rules of phonological reduction and assimilation in the members of the compounds (KLIMA; BELLUGI, 1979; LIDDELL; JOHNSON, 1986). An investigation of compound formation in BSL (British Sign Language) shows the possibility of simultaneous realization of two signs, which are two classifiers (CLs), in a compound (BRENNAN, 1990). In libras (Brazilian Sign Language), there are studies that deal with compounds realized sequentially, with two or three signs (QUADROS; KARNOPP, 2004; FELIPE, 2006; FIGUEIREDO SILVA; SELL, 2009). However, none of them deals with the possibility of occurrence of CLs in compounds, nor with the possibility of signing simultaneous compounds. If sign languages have two primary articulators, that is, the hands, it is natural to think of the possibility of occurrence of simultaneous signs. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to describe the types of compounds that occur in libras, and investigate the possibility of occurrence of CLs and non-manual markers in compounds, forming simultaneous compounds. Drawing on data collected in dictionaries, spontaneous conversations and recordings elicited by figures, we classify the compounds in libras into three major groups, which are: i) sequential compounds; ii) simultaneous compounds and iii) simultaneoussequential compounds. We observed that all the simultaneous compounds exhibit a CL predicate simultaneously realized with another CL sign, or exhibit a sign realized by the mouth, which enables the simultaneity with a manual sign. The group of simultaneous compounds is the least investigated one in sign languages and it will be the main topic of our research. Both the detailed description of these data and the investigation of the nature of CLs and signs realized by the mouth will lead to a better understanding of the morphological processes in sign languages, paving the way for a formal analysis of the compound formation in libras. The analysis developed in this work follows the theoretical assumptions of the Distributed Morphology framework (HALLE; MARANTZ, 1993).

Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/24899.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this PhD dissertation is to analyze a narrative paradox: how to deal with a drama series story – which should be allegedly a potential infinite tale – when this drama is pressured by an apocalyptic end. The presence of this finale should avoid this ability to defer the story sine dia; nonetheless, that controversial relationship seems to be reliable and absolutely needed in some North American production series, that have as a background the paranoic feeling recalled by the September 11 attacks. To this goal, this research studies the narrative and aesthetic elements which contribute to the serial construction of the following television dramas: 24 (Fox, 2001, Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow), Prison Break (Fox, 2005, Paul Scheuring) and Heroes (NBC, 2006, Tim Kring). This text is divided in three chapters, which concern to three concepts; these three items integrate the main features of the drama series architecture in their wider meaning. Firstly we would like to stress the concept Saturation to define the elements that set up narrative complexity in these series. From this point of view, we analyze the mutual contribution of the television drama series, their hybridisation and their growing plots. The second section, Fragmentation, also begins with the out of time chronology, typical from these series. The spreading plot and the fight against the clock – also other subject issues - lead the stories to a constant fracture, in a structural meaning, but also in metaphorical or literal ones. Finally, the race against the clock makes the story dependent on a certain Simultaneity. That implies to use all sort of technological resources to explain the communication between characters and plots, as an extension of a spying eye. Saturation, Fragmentation and Simultaneity will be three factors that will help to understand the postmodern behavior of the new television dramas.

Full text
Abstract:
The text proposes a reflection about the photography’s conceptual thought on the artwork presented, Variations in blue. That thought defends the photography not as an record of moments that has already passed, “that happened” (Roland Barthes), but as an mechanism to make the memory perform the several possibilities of “that could have happened” or “ that is impossible to have happened”. The artwork presents the photography as a continuous process of reconstruction, of renewing, of caducous image’s ressignification, of becoming action again. To that conception here presented, the photography doesn’t have the function to remember what it was, but to make up a new happening. This way, the photography produces impossible happenings: they have existence only throughout photography and inside the photography. Delineating relations between the music, the cinema and the photography, the text constructs the arguments that support this conceptual idea, which are: The “original” is not the matrix that reproduces identical unities, but “origin” plus “newness”, as proposed by Walter Benjamin for the “dialetic image”. The photography does not indicate the past, but the “present future”, as stated by Ernst Block about the image of hope. The photography is capable to enclose not one single moment, but the simultaneity. It is capable of proposing movement, understood not as a displacement from one point to another (AB), but as a state change, the ressignification of the same (A-A’).

Abstract:

The goal of this essay is to pursue a reading of ethnicity and sexuality in Shyam Selvadurai’s novel Funny Boy to show the importance of the interrelations between the two and how equally crucial both of these are in order to understand the protagonist Arjie’s journey and search for identity. To investigate the interrelation between ethnicity and sexuality, the analysis makes use of a method of simultaneous consideration that is similar to Mae Gwendolyn Henderson’s focus on “simultaneity of discourse” used by black women writers.

The turning points in the protagonist’s life and search for an identity are crucial and influenced by issues of separation, and the theme of exile is prominent in the novel. Selvadurai uses the theme in several aspects on a number of levels, concerning both ethnicity and sexuality. However, the narrative also allows the protagonist to find an alternative route in exploring his identity as a “funny one”.

These turning points are illustrated by a moving beyond the traditional gender roles and the idea of masculinity in areas of gendered and racialised spaces. Selvadurai shows a people that are ethnically and/or sexually divided while at the same time being linked through words and languages that can give and/or take away possibilities.

Hence, a second aim of this essay is to show that the protagonist overcomes the limitations that society has set by choosing the path that is right for him, a path that allows him to be “funny”.

Abstract:
The present study deals with the French gerund and the Swedish syntactic correspondences in a parallel corpus. The analysis is based on 3,988 authentic instances of the gerund and their corresponding structures in Swedish texts. These are collected in a corpus consisting of 13 original contemporary French novels and 13 original contemporary Swedish novels, including their respective translations. The main purpose is to identify the Swedish corresponding structures and consider how, and to what extent, they transmit the integrative function and the adverbial interpretations of the French gerund.   Nine Swedish reoccurring structures are discerned, including the most common: coordinated clauses and adverbial clauses. The study shows that the nine Swedish structures share the integrative capacity of the gerund to different degrees, as well as how they transmit the adverbial interpretations in various ways. Some Swedish syntactic structures correlate with particular adverbial interpretation of the gerund. Another aim is to contribute to the existing research on the French gerund: the semantic analysis of the corpus has led to question – with authentic examples – the alleged absolute inability of the gerund to denote an eventuality that is the consequence of the eventuality denoted by the superordinate clause. The study also reveals, in light of Swedish corresponding structures, the relationship between certain adverbial interpretations of the gerund and more independent syntax in French.

Abstract:
This dissertation has its origins in the uneasy relationship with theory that arises in a project, that is, from the perspective of one who is in a position to produce it, so to speak, taking into account the chain of decisions and operations that give rise to it. It relies on the principle that aesthetics is as much a philosophical reflection as it is an empirical contemplation, both inseparable and complementary. It investigates concepts that revolve around the values, contemporary or not, of aesthetics, art, literature, and other fields of knowledge applied to architecture. At the same time, it examines mostly Brazilian architectural works that belong to what has come to be called the modern movement. It does, however, include some significant exceptions. Having avoided their compartmentalization, as well as the disconnection of ideas, it stresses the uniqueness and multiplicity of each work in order to establish a framework in which the chapters are weaved together, allowing the lessons to interact with each other and the analysis to build bridges between works and between architects and other professionals, as well as defining what architecture is and should be. Here are five lessons based on architecture, shaped by readings inspired by poetics - constructions of language based on doing - which are mainly positive, but still concerned with the primary idea of simultaneity, not linearity; reconfirming permanence, as well as suggesting the possibility of new points of view in contemporary debate.

The demographic dynamics has a fundamental importance in the determination of the economic growth in a country. Some empirical works that had estimated the coefficient that associates the level of per capita income of the countries to the tax of demographic growth conclude that it can have opposing signal to the expected one, not significant or very raised in relation to that if it waits in theoretical terms. This dissertation has an a objective to analyze the theories of demographic dynamics and evaluate in which measure it can have simultaneous determination between the product per worker and the population growth. The econometric analysis, on the basis of a panel of 60 countries in the period between 1960 and 2000, indicated that to estimate of more appropriately form the effect of the demographic dynamics on the level of product per worker and on the economic growth it is necessary to consider the econometrical questions of simultaneity and endogeneidade

Abstract:
Perception in our everyday life takes place in multisensory environments, and hence involves the processing of a multitude of signals captured by various sensory modalities. Given the different nature of the signals, understanding how all the information is combined in the brain to form an integrated percept is not straightforward. One of the paramount questions is how the considerable timing differences between sensory information processing are managed. For example, in the last years there has been a tremendous surge in interest to understand how the perceptual system elicits the subjective impression of synchrony for stimuli coming from different sensory modalities. Yet, most evidence so far concerns stimulus-related properties in simple contexts. The present dissertation addresses the influence of cognitive factors and participants’ inner state (such as attention, action task demands, and ongoing brain rhythms) on synchrony perception between audio-visual events. In the first two studies of the dissertation, we have addressed the role of selective attention and action during cross-modal temporal recalibration. The results of these studies provide evidence that subjective simultaneity can be strongly modulated as a function of the focus of the observer’s endogenous attention, in otherwise identical stimulation conditions. In the third study, we have recorded electroencephalographic activity while participants performed an audio-visual simultaneity judgment task for stimuli presented at different asynchronies. Our results show that the phase of low frequency neural oscillations, reflecting brain states prior to the occurrence of an audio-visual event, can predict perceptual variability in synchrony judgments. Overall, our results shed new light on how cognitive factors can modulate multisensory perception.

Abstract:
The rise in popularity of competitive surfing across the globe has led to an exponential growth and changes to the sport, as well as focus on high quality wave hot spots. Areas like this exist here, in Peru, and are the driving force of young, aspiring surfers ready to represent their country. However, when it comes to the institutional infrastructure, the support is mainly around the capital, Lima. This creates a centralized development that overlooks the waves outside the capital, waves that are not only preferable for most surfers, but a necessity in the attempt to surf competitively. Therefore, the “High Preforming Surfing Center” initiative in Lobitos (Piura) will help take advantage of our natural heritage and help promote the development of a stronger surf culture both globally and domestically.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] As gravitational wave detectors approach sensitivities that will allow observations to become routine, astrophysics lies on the cusp of an exciting new era. Potential sources will include transients such as merging neutron stars and black holes, supernova explosions or the engines that power gamma-ray bursts. This thesis will be devoted to the astrophysical gravitational wave background signal produced by cosmological populations of such transient signals. Particular attention will be devoted to the observation-time dependence imposed on the individual sources that accumulate to produce a gravitational wave background signal. The ultimate aim is to determine what information is encoded in the temporal evolution of such a signal. To lay the foundations for further investigation, the stochastic gravitational wave background signal from neutron star birth throughout the Universe has been calculated. In view of the uncertainties in both the single-source emissions and source rate histories, several models of each are employed. The results show that that the resulting signals are only weakly dependent on the source-rate evolution model and that prominent features in the single-source spectra can be related to the background spectra. In comparison with previous studies, the use of relativistic single-source gravitational wave waveforms rather than Newtonian models and a more slowly evolving source-rate density results in a 1 { 2 order of magnitude reduction in signal. ... A comparison with the more commonly used brightness distribution of events shows that when applying both methods to a data stream containing a background of Gaussian distributed false alarms, the brightness distribution yielded lower standard errors, but was biased by the false alarms. In comparison, a fitting procedure based on the time evolution of events was less prone to errors resulting from false alarms, but as fewer events contributed to the data, had a lower resolution. In further support of the time dependent signature of transient events, an alternative technique is fiapplied to the same source population. In this case, the local rate density is probed by measuring the statistical compatibility of the filtered data against synthetic time dependent data. Although this method is not as compact as the fitting procedure, the rate estimates are compatible. To further investigate how the observation time dependence of transient populations can be used to constrain global parameters, the method is applied to Swift long gamma-ray burst data. By considering a distribution in peak °ux rather than a gravitational wave amplitude, gamma-ray bursts can be considered as a surrogate for resolved gravitational wave transients. For this application a peak °ux{observation time relation is described that takes the form of a power law that is invariant to the luminosity distribution of the sources. Additionally, the method is enhanced by invoking time reversal invariance and the temporal cosmological principle. Results are presented to show that the peak °ux{observation time relation is in good agreement with recent estimates of source parameters. Additionally, to show that the intrinsic time dependence allows the method to be used as a predictive tool, projections are made to determine the upper limits in peak °ux of future gamma-ray burst detections for Swift.

Abstract:
This research deals with –ing participle clauses in contemporary English. It is based on a corpus totalling over 1,700 participle clauses collected from novels and newspaper articles, and it also relies on data from electronic corpora – the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The main characteristic of –ing participle clauses is that they lack an explicit syntactic and semantic link to their superordinate clause: to shed light on the linguistic phenomena accounting for this specificity, the research establishes a detailed typology of –ing clauses, studies their relationship to their subjects, investigates the specific nature of their incidence and predication, and provides a detailed analysis of their semantic indeterminacy. It shows that their basic semantic value is one of attendant circumstance – a mere link between two events or states that form a unit in the speaker’s mind. The characteristics of the co- and context may alter this basic value to give the clause its final (adjectival or adverbial) meaning. The research puts forward hypotheses to account for the syntactic and semantic characteristics of –ing participle clauses within the framework of Gustave Guillaume’s psychosystematic theory: it shows the syntactic and semantic behaviour of –ing clauses can be directly traced back to the meaning of the –ing participle, which, it is hypothesised, has an internal incidence and expresses simultaneity and imperfectivity in all of its uses

The Modern Physics insertion in High School, along with its postulates and theoretical patterns that can’t be practiced or demonstrated, brings additional difficulties to the Physics teaching-learning process. A feasible alternative to minimize the problems consists in carrying out experiments analogue to certain events of the Modern Physics. Another problem consists in the lack of skilled high-school graduated teachers in order to work with the new context. Therefore, the objective of this work was to investigate the construction process of the Relativity of Simultaneity, concept through the use of an experimental apparatus, with students of Physics of Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). Thus, it was chosen the Personal Construct Theory as a methodological-theoretical purpose, and it was developed an experimental appararatus, involving an electronic circuit to control a LED (light-emitting diode), matrix that permits analogies with a light beam behavior interacting with different obstacles. The results showed that the developed experimental pattern was decisive concerning the promotion of cognitive conflicts, making students review their initial concepts and consequently, reorganize them, considering some aspects as: time, distance, constancy of the light speed and events that happen at the same time, which are essential to the purpose concept comprehension; The Relativity of Simultaneity.

Abstract:
This PhD consists of an artistic work (an album of music) and an exegesis. The album contains eleven works for a variety of ensembles, including an eight-piece pop fusion group, a string quartet, an eleven-piece a cappella ensemble, a five-piece contemporary classical ensemble and a six-piece percussion ensemble. Each of these works embraces a blend of African and Western techniques and aesthetics. These works are the result of a compositional praxis which is closely integrated with a theoretical framework that I develop in the exegesis. The purpose of the exegesis is to provide a framework from which to understand the compositions. Perspectives such as postcolonialism are immediately engaged because of the fact that two distinct world cultures are referenced by these compositions. Similarly, the musical aesthetics of the two source cultures are examined because I need to understand the ways that the value systems are expressed in musical terms, and how they might interact in cross-cultural composition. Examination of the literature reveals that there has been a trend in recent decades towards cultural analysis of cross-cultural music but very little work has been done on the technical analysis of such works (Utz 2003). A preliminary list of issues is developed from a survey of ten relevant composers’ works and these issues are categorised into three analytic dimensions: the contextual (cultural), aesthetic and technical. African “musics” and musical cultures are discussed with regard to issues of Western interpretation (Agawu 2003) and appropriate representation, social and cultural preferences and aesthetic values. Likewise Western musical culture is examined in order to understand its colonial impact, its stylistic consistency and ideas that have emerged about aesthetic preferences and the interpretation of meaning (Cone 1972; Kivy 2001). Four frameworks are developed to address each of these analytical dimensions. The first deals with cultural identity and the appropriation of musical ideas, the second with the sensitivity of certain materials. The third framework enables the examination of the aesthetic preferences for each of the cultures involved and the fourth framework provides a taxonomy and vocabulary of terms for use in analysis of the structural and other technical features of cross-cultural Western/African musics. These four frameworks are applied to the eleven compositions that I have completed for this project. I identify distinct approaches to appropriation, aesthetic preferences, the predominance of rhythmic structure and the performative embodiment and narrative transformational processes in my compositions. I conclude by categorising the technical and stylistic preferences embodied in my work, and identifying possible future directions for my compositions and the development of the analytical frameworks.
