In this thesis the stability of generic boundary layer flows is studied from a global viewpoint using optimization methods. Global eigenmodes of the incompressible linearized Navier-Stokes equations are computed using the Krylov subspace Arnoldi method. These modes serve as a tool both to study asymptotic stability and as a reduced basis to study transient growth. Transient growth is also studied using adjoint iterations. The knowledge obtained from the stability analysis is used to device systematic feedback control in the Linear Quadratic Gaussian framework. The dynamics is assumed to be described by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. Actuators and sensors are designed and a Kalman filtering technique is used to reconstruct the unknown flow state from noisy measurements. This reconstructed flow state is used to determine the control feedback which is applied to the Navier-Stokes equations through properly designed actuators. Since the control and estimation gains are obtained through an optimization process, and the Navier-Stokes equations typically forms a very high-dimensional system when discretized there is an interest in reducing the complexity of the equations. A standard method to construct a reduced order model is to perform a Galerkin projection of the full equations onto the subspace spanned by a suitable set of vectors, such as global eigenmodes and balanced truncation modes.<br>QC 20100924

A key proposition of Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) self-control theory is the stability hypothesis which suggests that an individual's level of self-control, once established between the ages of 8-10, is stable over the life course. Empirical results from examinations of the stability hypothesis have been mixed. Prior tests of the stability hypothesis have employed aggregate assessment methods (e.g., mean-level and correlational analyses). Such approaches fail to take into account the possibility that individual developmental pathways may differ. This study employs individual longitudinal data over a four year period for 3,249 7th to 10th grade subjects to assess the stability hypothesis using both traditional stability estimation techniques (e.g., ANOVAs and zero-order correlations), as well as heterogeneity assessment methods - semiparametric group-based trajectory modeling (SPGM). Multinomial logistic regression (MLOGIT) of theoretically and empirically relevant risk factors (i.e., parenting, parental criminality, deviant peers, bonds to school) was employed to distinguish between developmental trajectories. SPGM results suggest that self-control is stable for a majority of the sample; however, a sizeable portion of the sample evinced trajectories for which self-control was marked by considerable change. Specifically, 6 unique trajectories in the development of self-control were identified - two groups were identified with high stable trajectories of self-control and four groups were identified that had lower, less stable trajectories of self-control. Additionally, several risk factors differentiated these groups. The results indicate that those with lower, less stable trajectories have more deviant peer association, higher rates of parental criminality, less intense bonds to school, and lower levels of parenting. These results indicate that self control is not stable nor is it consistent across groups, leading to a rejection of Hirschi and Gottfredson's explanation.

Previous studies highlighted the importance of parental support for development of mastery of control and depressive symptoms. These studies tended to examine one time wave and outcomes related to that period, forwarding an assumption parenting behaviours do not change as children age. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979-Children and Young Adults, this study filled the gap by examining children's supportive environment at three time points and determining how levels of support across these points impacted children's depression and mastery at 18 years of age. Relative stability of mothers' supportive parenting (i.e., encouragement of social maturity, warmth and affection, and physical punishment) at early childhood, middle childhood, and early adolescence was examined by Kendall's tau correlations. Encouragement of social maturity showed relative stability between early and middle childhood and middle childhood and early adolescence; warmth and affection showed relative stability between early and middle childhood, and physical punishment showed relative stability across all time points. Absolute stability was examined using hierarchical linear modelling and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. No instances were found. Latent class growth analysis identified different trajectories of supportive environment among participants and three groups were identified. Multiple regressions conducted to examine how different trajectories affect late adolescents' depression and mastery found children of mothers from the least supportive group had statistically significant higher level of depression and lower level of mastery of control at 18 years of age; children of mothers from the progressively and continuously supportive group had similarly positive results of depression and mastery.

The dynamics is assumed to be described by the linearized Navier--Stokes equations. Actuators and sensor are designed and a Kalman filtering technique is used to reconstruct the unknown flow state from noisy measurements. This reconstructed flow state is used to determine the control feedback which is applied to the Navier--Stokes equations through properly designed actuators. Since the control and estimation gains are obtained through an optimization process, and the Navier--Stokes equations typically forms a very high-dimensional system when discretized there is an interest in reducing the complexity of the equations. One possible approach is to perform Fourier decomposition along (almost) homogeneous spatial directions and another is by constructing a reduced order model by Galerkin projection on a suitable set of vectors. The first strategy is used to control the evolution of a range of instabilities in the classical family of Falkner--Skan--Cooke flows whereas the second is applied to a more complex cavity type of geometry.</p>

L’étude présentée dans cette thèse se situe dans le domaine de l’acoustique modale des conduits avec des parois absorbantes et un écoulement moyen. Nous considérons une source de bruit en amont avec une fréquence fixe. Avec cela, nous étudions les modes propres acoustiques du conduit en terme de nombre d’onde qui sont présents.Avec cette étude, nous contribuons à la meilleure compréhension de la propagation du sondans ce type de configuration. Parmi les applications, il y a la réduction du bruit des moteurs des aéronefs.Une analyse numérique par la méthode pseudospectrale de collocation, sur la base de polynômes de Chebyshev, a été mise en ouvre pour obtenir le spectre des modes, dans un domaine transversal.Pour cela, deux programmes ont été utilisés : le programme FiEStA, qui a été développé dans le cadre de cette thèse, et qui résout les équations d’Euler linéarisées, en considérant un problème à une ou deux une ou deux dimensions. D’autre part, le programme MAMOUT, a été utilisé pour résoudre les équations de Navier-Stokes linéarisées, pour étudier plus spécifiquement les effets de la viscosité.Avec ces outils, on a constaté les effets de trois paramètres : lorsque le rapport d’aspect augmente, la densité des modes, en particulier des modes propagatifs, se développe également.Quand le nombre de Mach de l’écoulement moyen augmente, on observe les effets suivants sur les valeurs propres : un déplacement vers la partie réelle négative, une amplification de leur valeur absolue et un déplacement vers les modes d’indice inférieur. Le profil d’écoulement moyen induit aussi un déplacement dans les valeur propres, pas facilement prévisible. Il modifie également la forme des fonctions propres ; ce qui est notamment visible pour le mode d’onde plane. Les changements d’impédance induisent un échange cyclique de valeurs propres entre les valeurs de parois rigides des modes consécutifs. Avec certaines valeurs d’impédance, les modes acoustiques de paroi apparaissent. Ils sont caractérisés par la forme exponentielle de leurs fonctions propres.En plus des modes acoustiques, il existe des modes hydrodynamiques de surface qui se sont révélés avec quelques valeurs d’impédance et forme et nombre de Mach de l’écoulement moyen. Pour un ensemble de données de référence, ces modes ont été étudiés. L’impédance a été considérée avec un modèle basé sur des données de la littérature, tout comme le profil d’écoulement moyen.Un mode hydrodynamique a été trouvé. Avec certaines valeurs de la fréquence, l’ensemble des paramètres donne lieu à une instabilité. En utilisant le critère Briggs Bres pour la stabilité,l’instabilité a été jugée absolue.À partir du comportement des modes avec différentes valeurs de l’impédance, et conformément aux résultats publiés, nous avons défini la condition que le spectre doit remplir pour réduire autant que possible le bruit. Nous avons calculé cette valeur pour différents fréquences et écoulements moyens<br>The study presented in this thesis is within the domain of modal acoustics of lined ducts withgrazing flow. We consider an upstream source of noise with a fixed frequency, within a lined duct.From this, we study the eigenmodes in terms of wavenumber that are present in this system.With this study, we contribute to the better understanding of sound propagation in thedescribed configuration. Within its main applications, we can find the noise reduction fromaeroengines.A numerical analysis with the pseudospectral collocation method, based on Chebyshevpolynomials was used to obtain the spectrum of modes within the duct, in a domain transversalto the mean flow. For this, two programs were used: On one hand, within the frame of this thesis,the program FiEStA was developed. It solves the linearized Euler Equations, considering eitherone or two dimensions of the transversal plane. On the other hand, the already existing programMAMOUT was used for verification and to solve also the linearized Navier-Stokes Equations toobserve the effects of viscosity.With these tools, the first result was to notice the effects of three parameters: When theaspect ratio grows, the density of modes in the spectrum grows also. In particular, we havemore propagative modes. As the mean flow Mach number grows, we observe these effects on theeigenvalues: a displacement to the negative real part, a slight amplification of their absolute valueand a displacement towards the modes of lower index. The difference in mean flow profile inducesanother displacement in modes, not easily predictable. It changes also the shape of eigenfunctions,which is clearly seen for the planewave mode. The impedance changes induce a cyclic exchange ofeigenvalues from their hard wall value to the hard wall value of a consecutive mode. The changeof eigenfunction is gradually change in wavelength, to obtain the shape of the destination mode.With some impedance values, a pair of modes, called the acoustic surface modes arise. They arecharacterized by the exponential shape of their eigenfunctions.Besides these acoustic surface modes, there are also a pair of hydrodynamic surface modeswhich come to light with some values of impedance and shape and Mach number of the meanflow. With a benchmark data, these modes were studied. The impedance was considered from themodel of a measured liner while the mean flow profile was taken from experimental values. Withthis, the hydrodynamic mode was found. With specific values of frequency, the set of parametersgives rise to an instability. Using the Briggs-Bers criterion for stability, the instability was foundto be absolute for a given frequency.From the comportment of modes with different values of impedance, and in accordance withpublished results, we defined the condition that the spectrum has to fulfill to reduce as much aspossible the upstream noise. This is what we called the optimal impedance. We obtained it forseveral flow profiles and frequencies, in both 1D and 2D domains

We consider both a long-wave model and a first-order weighted-residual integral boundary layer (WIBL) model in the investigation of thin film flow down a topographical incline whilst under the effects of a normal electric field. The liquid is assumed to be a perfect dielectric, although is trivially extended to the case of a perfect conductor. The perfect dielectric case with no topography includes a simple modified electric Weber number which incorporates the relative electrical permittivity constant into itself. Linear stability analysis is carried out for both models, and critical Reynolds numbers which depend on the electric Weber number and the capillary number are produced. Regions of stability, convective instability and absolute instability are then determined for both models in terms of our electric Weber number and Reynolds number parameters in the case of no topography. Time-dependent simulations are produced to corroborate the aforementioned regions and investigate the effect of normal electric field strength in addition to sinusoidal and rectangular topographical amplitude on our system for various domain sizes. For the time-dependent simulations we find strong agreement with the linear stability analysis, and the results suggest that the inclusion of a normal electric field may have some stabilising properties in the long-wave model which are absent in the case of a flat wall, for which the electric field is always linearly destabilising. This stabilising effect is not observed for the same parameters in the WIBL model with a sinusoidal wall, although a similar effect is noticed in the WIBL model with a rectangular wall. We also investigate the simultaneous effect of domain size, wall amplitude and electric field strength on the critical Reynolds numbers for both models, and find that increasing the electric field strength can make large-amplitude sinusoidal topography stabilising rather than destabilising for the long-wave model. Continuation curves of steady solutions and bifurcation diagrams are also produced, and comparisons between the two models are made for various parameter values, which show excellent agreement with the literature. Subharmonic branches and time-periodic solutions are additionally included, similarly showing very good agreement with the literature.

Volume overload is a common feature in patients on haemodialysis (HD). This contributes significantly to the cardiovascular disease burden seen in these patients. Clinical assessments of the volume state are often inaccurate. Techniques such as interdialytic blood pressure, relative blood volume monitoring, bioimpedance are available to improve clinical effectives. However all these techniques exhibit significant shortcomings in their accuracy, reliability and applicability at the bed side. We evaluated the usefulness of a dual compartment monitoring technique using Continuous Segmental Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (CSBIS) and Relative Blood Volume (RBV) as a tool to assess hydration status and determine dry weight. We also sought to evaluate the role of Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) and B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) as a volume marker in dialysis patients. The Retrospective analysis of a historical cohort (n = 376, 55 Diabetic) showed a significant reduction in post-dialysis weights in the first three months of dialysis (72.5 to 70kg, p<0.027) with a non-significant increase in weight between months 6-12. The use of anti-hypertensive agents reduced insignificantly in the first 3 months, increased marginally between months 3-6 and significantly increased over the subsequent 6 months. The residual urea clearance (KRU) fell and dialysis times increased. The cohort was very different to that dialysing at Tassin and showed a dissociation between weight reduction and BP control. This may relate to occult volume overload. CSBIS-RBV monitoring in 9 patients with pulse ultrafiltration (pulse UF) showed distinct reproducible patterns relating to extra cellular fluid (ECF) and RBV rebound. An empirical Refill Ratio was then used to define the patterns of change and this was related to the state of their hydration. A value closer to unity was consistent with the attainment of best achievable target weight. The refill ratio fell significantly between the first (earlier) and third (last) rebound phase (1.97 ± 0.92 vs 1.32 ± 0.2). CSBIS monitoring was then carried out in 31 subjects, whilst varying dialysate composition, temperature and patient posture to analyse the effects of these changes on the ECF trace and to ascertain whether any of these interventions can trigger a change in the slope of the ECF trace distinct to that caused by UF. Only, isovolemic HD caused a change in both RBV and ECF in some patients that was explained by volume re-distribution due to gravitational shifts, poor vascular reactivity, sodium gradient between plasma and dialysate and the use of vasodilating antihypertensive agents. This has not been described previously. These will need to be explored further. The study did demonstrate a significant lack of comparability of absolute values of RECF between dialysis sessions even in the same patient. This too has not been described previously. This is likely to be due to subtle changes in fluid distribution between compartments. Therefore a relative changes must be studied. This sensitivity to subtle changes may increase the usefulness of the technique for ECF tracking through dialysis. The potential of dual compartment monitoring to track volume changes in real time was further explored in 29 patients of whom 21 achieved weight reductions and were able to be restudied. The Refill Ratio decreased significantly in the 21 patients who had their dry weights reduced by 0.95 ± 1.13 kg (1.41 ± 0.25 vs 1.25 ± 0.31). Blood pressure changes did not reach statistical significance. The technique was then used to examine differences in vascular refill between a 36oC and isothermic dialysis session in 20 stable prevalent patients. Pulse UF was carried out in both these sessions. There were no significant differences in Refill Ratios, energy removed and blood pressure response between the two sessions. The core temperature (CT) of these patients was close to 36oC and administering isothermic HD did not confer any additional benefit. Mean BNP levels in 12 patients during isovolemic HD and HD with UF did not relate to volume changes. ANP concentrations fell during a dialysis session in 11 patients from a mean 249 ± 143 pg/ml (mean ± SD) at the start of dialysis to 77 ± 65 pg/ml at the end of the session (p<0.001). During isolated UF levels did not change but fell in the ensuing sham phase indicating a time lag between volume loss and decreased generation. (136±99 pg/ml to 101±77.2 pg/ml; p<0.02) In a subsequent study ANP concentrations were measured throughout dialysis and in the post-HD period for 2 hours. A rebound in ANP concentration was observed occurring at around 90 min post-HD. The degree of this rebound may reflect the prevailing fluid state and merit further study. We have shown the utility of dual compartment monitoring with CSBIS-RBV technique and its potential in assessing volume changes in real time in haemodialysis patients. We have also shown the potential of ANP as an independent marker of volume status in the same setting. Both these techniques merit further study.

The study of non-linear input-output maps can be summarized by three concepts: Gain, Positivity and Dissipativity. However, in order to make efficient use of these theorems it is necessary to use loop transformations and weightings, or so called ”multipliers”.The first problem this thesis studies is the feedback interconnection of a Linear Time Invariant system with a memoryless bounded and monotone non-linearity, or so called Absolute Stability problem, for which the test for stability is equivalent to show the existence of a Zames-Falb multiplier. The main advantage of this approach is that Zames–Falb multipliers can be specialized to recover important tools such as Circle criterion and the Popov criterion. Albeit Zames-Falb multipliers are an efficient way of describing non-linearities in frequency domain, the Fourier transform of the multiplier does not preserve the L1 norm. This problem has been addressed by two paradigms: mathematically complex multipliers with exact L1 norm and multipliers with mathematically tractable frequency domain properties but approximate L1 norm. However, this thesis exposes a third factor that leads to conservative results: causality of Zames-Falb multipliers. This thesis exposes the consequences of narrowing the search Zames-Falb multipliers to causal multipliers, and motivated by this argument, introduces an anticausal complementary method for the causal multiplier synthesis in [1].The second subject of this thesis is the feedback interconnection of two bounded systems. The interconnection of two arbitrary systems has been a well understood problem from the point of view of Dissipativity and Passivity. Nonetheless, frequency domain analysis is largely restricted for passive systems by the need of canonically factorizable multipliers, while Dissipativity mostly exploits constant multipliers. This thesis uses IQC to show the stability of the feedback interconnection of two non-linear systems by introducing an equivalent representation of the IQC Theorem, and then studies formally the conditions that the IQC multipliers need. The result of this analysis is then compared with Passivity and Dissipativity by a series of corollaries.

The underlying mathematical model of many simulation models is graph dynamical systems (GDS). This dynamical system, its implementation, and analyses on each will be the focus of this paper. When using a simulation model to answer a research question, it is important to describe this underlying mathematical model in which we are operating for verification and validation. In this paper we discuss analyses commonly used in simulation models. These include sensitivity analyses and uncertainty quantification, which provide motivation for stability and structure-to-function research in GDS. We review various results in these areas, which contribute toward validation and computationally tractable analyses of our simulation model. We then present two new areas of research - stability of transient structure with respect to update order permutations, and an application of GDS in which a time-varying generalized cellular automata is implemented as a simulation model.<br>Master of Science

In this study, the manipulations of history and language in the dystopias of &ldquo<br>Nineteen Eighty-Four&rdquo<br>by George Orwell, &ldquo<br>We&rdquo<br>by Yevgeni Zamyatin and &ldquo<br>Brave New World&rdquo<br>by Aldous Huxley are examined. The principal aim of this investigation is to demonstrate that in these imaginary societies absolute stability is achieved through the manipulations of these two domains. The thesis argues that if the domains of history and language are not taken under control, they are to provide the subjects with the standard of comparisons which would enable them to realize that they are in fact dominated. However, once these domains are manipulated, they are transformed into the means of the dystopian rulers for mentally impoverishing people in a way that they would not be capable of conceiving the flaws within the system and therefore, would not attempt to challenge the order or require a change. In this sense, it is proposed that the subjects of these closed societies, who are formed as a result of the reshaping of history and language, would lack the mental capabilities to identify their subjection and behave automatically in the manner that is imposed on them by the political order.
Moreover, in this study, the relationship of the genre dystopia with political theory is explored<br>it is indicated that dystopias are not only literary works, but rather they are also texts of social criticism containing certain warnings about the future course of events. Relying on this argument, it is claimed that such an invasion of the minds by the control over history and language in our three dystopias is the exaggerated version of the ideological relationships of the individuals to these two realms in the contemporary societies. Thus, having in mind that in the dystopias examined here the manipulations of history and language are the preconditions of the use of other realms (such as religion, sexuality and science), it is concluded that these texts enable modern individuals to see that in order to maintain a critical distance with the established political and social order, the multiplicity of linguistic resources and knowledge of history are very crucial.

Para sistemas chaveados sujeitos a saturação nos atuadores, são fornecidas condições convexas para o cálculo de ganhos chaveados e robustos. A saturação é modelada como uma não-linearidade de setor e uma estimativa do domínio de estabilidade é determinada. Para sistemas lineares com incertezas politópicas e não-linearidades pertencentes a setores, são fornecidas condições convexas de dimensão finita para construir funções de Lur'e com dependência polinomial homogênea nos parâmetros. PRIMA, un futur instrument du VLTI, utilise un système de métrologie laser pour mesurer les variations de chemin optique internes à l’interféromètre. L’étude présentée dans ce mémoire porte sur le développement, l’intégration et le test de sources lasers stabilisées en fréquence pour ce système de métrologie. Dans une première partie, nous présentons le cahier des charges du système dans le contexte de PRIMA et du VLTI. Nous rappelons les bases de l’interférométrie laser et les problèmes qu’impose son application à PRIMA. Nous en déduisons la nécessité de stabiliser la longueur d’onde du laser sur une référence absolue et exposons l’intérêt de transformer ce système en un système de mesure de distances absolues. Dans une seconde partie, nous décrivons notre contribution à la stabilisation en fréquence d’un laser Nd:YAG sur une raie d’absorption de l’iode. Nous mesurons précisément les performances du système avec un peigne de fréquences optiques auto-référencé. Nous améliorons le système pour satisfaire aux exigences du cahier des charges. La troisième partie est consacrée à la transformation du système en un système de mesure de distances absolues par l’utilisation de l’interférométrie à deux longueurs d’onde. Nous proposons un nouveau concept de source laser qui utilise un peigne de fréquences optiques comme référence de fréquence. Cette source permet de générer un choix sans précédent de longueurs d’onde synthétiques avec une précision relative dans le vide meilleure que 10−11. Nous validons le concept sur un prototype et montrons qu’il peut être utilisé en interférométrie à deux longueurs d’onde pour résoudre une longueur d’onde optique<br>The forthcoming instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), called Phase-Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry facility (PRIMA), uses a laser metrology system to monitor the variations of internal path lengths. This dissertation addresses the development, integration and test of frequency stabilized laser sources for the PRIMA Metrology system (PRIMET). In the first part, we present in the context of PRIMA and the VLTI the specifications of PRIMET. We recall the basics of single-wavelength laser interferometry and introduce the problems raised by its application to PRIMET. We present the need for the absolute frequency stabilization of PRIMET laser and the interest for an upgrade of PRIMET towards absolute distance measurements. In the second part, we present our contribution to the absolute frequency stabilization of PRIMET Nd:YAG laser on a transition of iodine. We characterize the system and measure precisely its performance with a self-referenced optical frequency comb. We improve the system to reach the specifications in terms of accuracy and stability of the locking frequency. The third part addresses the upgrade of PRIMET towards absolute distance measurements by the use of two-wavelength interferometry. We propose a new concept of two-wavelength laser source frequency stabilized on an optical frequency comb. This permits the generation of an unprecedented large choice of synthetic wavelength with a relative accuracy better than 10−11 in vacuum. We validate the concept on a prototype and shows that it can be used to resolve an optical wavelength. Finally, we propose to apply this concept to the upgrade of PRIMET

O crescimento da demanda de energia e das interligações entre os Sistemas Elétricos de Potência, assim como a necessidade de prestação de melhores serviços exigem que as técnicas de análise destes sejam cada vez mais rápidas e refinadas. Dentre estas técnicas, as análises de estabilidade transitória através de métodos energéticos são estudadas e o desenvolvimento de técnicas computacionais que permitam a análise em tempo real da estabilidade transitória é o principal objetivo deste trabalho. Os métodos energéticos são métodos diretos adequados à aplicações em tempo real, pois obtém informações a respeito da estabilidade diretamente das equações diferenciais do sistema, sem a necessidade do conhecimento das soluções das equações diferenciais. A aplicação de métodos energéticos aos estudos de estabilidade transitória evoluiu significativamente nos últimos anos. Esta evolução culminou com o desenvolvimento do método BCU. Este método está fundamentado no conceito de ponto de equilíbrio de controle e portanto, garante apenas a existência ou a estabilidade do primeiro \"swing\". Embora este seja um método eficiente, existe uma grande quantidade de casos que são estáveis no primeiro \"swing\", mas o sistema perde a estabilidade em \"swings\" subseqüentes. Para resolver este problema, desenvolveu-se uma técnica de estimativa do parâmetro amortecimento para o caso de uma máquina versus barramento infinito. Estima-se o amortecimento necessário que a máquina deverá possuir tal que a estabilidade nos \"swings\" subseqüentes seja garantida. Esta metodologia é utilizada em conjunto com o BCU garantindo a satisfação da condição de transversalidade exigida no desenvolvimento teórico deste método. Maiores investigações serão necessárias para estimar os amortecimentos em sistemas multimáquinas.<br>The increase of load demand and interconnection between power systems as well as the necessity of offering better customer services require fast and refined techniques to analyze these systems. In particular, the transient stability analysis is studied and the development of computational techniques suitable to real-time transient stability analysis is the main aim of this work. The energetic methods are direct methods suitable to real-time applications because they obtain qualitative information about the system without the knowledge of the differential equation solutions. The application of energetic methods to the transient stability analysis developed significantly in the last years. This evolution culminated with the development of the BCU method. This method is based on the concept of controlling equilibrium point, therefore it only guarantees the existence of the first swing. In spite of the efficiency of this method, there exists a high number of cases where the BCU predicts stability to the first swing but the system becomes unstable or loses synchronism in future swings. In order to solve this problem, a methodology to estimate the damping coefficient was developed to the machine versus infinite bus case. The damping coefficient that must be applied to the machine to guarantee the stability in future swings is estimated. This methodology is used together with the BCU method guaranteeing the satisfying of the transversality condition required by the BCU theory. Further investigations must be carried out to extend the methodology to multimachine systems.

Les becs de bord d'attaque sont responsables pour une bonne part des nuisances sonores créées par les avions en phase d'approche. Les études antérieures laissent penser que les instabilités de l'écoulement jouent un rôle dans le bruit rayonné. L'objectif de cette thèse est donc de rechercher les modes hydrodynamiques instables de l'écoulement autour d'un bec générique. Au bord de fuite du bec, la théorie de l'instabilité absolue permet d'évaluer la fréquence de l'échappement tourbillonnaire. La valeur obtenue en haute fréquence (40 kHz) correspond bien au bruit de raie émis par le bec. Dans la cavité du bec, l'écoulement est supposé bidimensionnel, incompressible et non visqueux. La dépendance du problème suivant deux coordonnées spatiales impose le recours à l'approche de stabilité BiGlobale. La linéarisation des équations d’Euler autour de l'écoulement moyen, dans le domaine fréquentiel, conduit à un problème différentiel aux valeurs propres défini sur un domaine curviligne. Une méthode appelée « transformation implicite » a été développée pour se ramener à un domaine cartésien, sur lequel on peut utiliser les techniques usuelles de collocation spectrale. Le code de calcul résultant, BIGSAM (BIGlobal Stability computation on an Arbitrary Mesh), a été validé sur plusieurs cas tests puis appliqué à la cavité curviligne du bec. On a ainsi établi une première taxonomie des modes hydrodynamiques de la cavité du bec. Les modes couronnes, situés autour de fréquences régulièrement espacées d'environ 380 Hz, montrent une couronne de tourbillons alternés, associés à des fluctuations de pression. Les modes allées représentent les allées de tourbillons de Kelvin-Helmholtz issus de la pointe inférieure du bec. Les plages de fréquences obtenues correspondent globalement à celles du bruit large bande basse fréquence dans le spectre sonore. Les résultats des calculs de stabilité absolue et BiGlobale constituent ainsi un premier pas vers la modélisation des sources de bruit aéroacoustique au voisinage du bec.

Les écoulements stationnaires et pulsés sont examinés dans deux géométries bloquées. Les géométries utilisées sont des modèles d'artères sténotiques, une condition commune ou une contraction localisée grandit dans une artère. Les géométries sont des modèles simplifiés de la réalité physiologique d'une sténose, l'intention de l'étude étant d'isoler et de décrire les caractéristiques fondamentales des écoulements sténotiques. L'étude se concentre sur l'effet de la variation du taux de blocage sur l'écoulement et sa stabilité. La première partie de la thèse présente une investigation de l'écoulement stationnaire à travers une conduite bidimensionnelle, avec une contraction asymétrique semi-circulaire. Les variations de la dynamique et de la stabilité et du sillage avec le nombre de Reynolds et le taux de blocage sont présentés. Le mode primaire de l'instabilité est décrit et son mécanisme déterminé analytiquement comme étant une instabilité elliptique. La deuxième partie concerne une géométrie cylindrique avec une contraction axisymétrique. Les écoulements stationnaires et pulsés sont examinés numériquement et expérimentalement. Numériquement, les différents modes linéaires d'instabilité sont identifiés. Expérimentalement, l'influence importante d'une instabilité convective est observée. Pour l'écoulement stationnaire, des comparaisons entre le comportement périodique de l'instabilité convective et la réponse d'un forçage sur l'écoulement stable sont effectuées. Pour l'écoulement pulsé, l'instabilité convective domine pour la plupart des cas considérés. La dépendance du nombre de Reynolds et du taux de blocage des deux formes d'instabilité est étudiée.

Les Oscillateurs Paramétriques Optiques (OPO) sont des sources optiques susceptibles de produire par interaction non linéaire à trois ondes au sein d'un cristal à forte sensibilité quadratique, des faisceaux de lumière cohérente et accordable en fréquence. Ils sont classés parmi les systèmes optiques à cavité non linéaire, dans lesquels des structures spatiales auto-organisées peuvent se former de façon spontanée dans la section transverse des faisceaux de sortie. Nous présentons ici, la capacité des OPO à générer de nouvelles structures, notamment celles conduisant à un confinement de l'énergie, appelées Structures Spatiales Localisées (SSL) ou solitons dissipatifs. Notre étude permet le contrôle et la manipulation des SSL à partir des caractéristiques du champ de pompe incident, et de l'interaction non lméaire des champs intra-cavité. Nous montrons, en particulier, que les inhomogénéités dans le pompage conduIsent à un piégeage des SSL, ce qui implique la quantification des seuils d'oscillation de l'OPO et une disparition des courbes neutre de stabIlité marginale, obtenues pour le cas idéal d'un pompage en ondes planes. Ce piégeage résiste à l'effet de dérive induit par le walk-off (double réfraction) et l'interaction entre ce dernier et les inhomogénéités fournit un moyen efficace pour contrôler aussi bien la vitesse que la position d'équilibre des SSL dans le plan transverse. L'étude des effets non linéaires du walk-off nous a permis de montrer qu'il est possible, en régIme monostable, d'abaisser le seuil d'émission de l'OPO sous le seuil linéaire classique. En régime bistable, nous avons révélé l'existence d'un terme de gradient non-linéaire pennettant ainsi la modélIsation de la dynamique spatio-temporelle des champs intra-cavité au-dessus du seuil. L'étude de ce nouveau modèle montre une autodépendance de la fréquence et de la vitesse d'entraînement des structures spatiales de l'OPO, vis à vis de leur intensité. Ce qui permet d'expliquer l'auto-décallage de fréquences, le freinage et la dissymétrie observés dans l'enveloppe des champs émis par l'OPO.

Les activités de recherches menées dans le cadre de cette thèse sont divisées en deux parties: Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous allons présenter un cas particulier du problème de classification des solutions algébriques de l'équation de Painlevé 6. Ce cas simple se produit quand une solution algébrique donnée satisfait chaque membre d'une famille non-triviale d'équations. Une telle famille non-triviale d'équations contenant au moins deux éléments distincts satisfait toute la famille correspondante à la droite affine contenant ces deux éléments. Ainsi, toute famille non-triviale définie comme précédent, correspondant à un plan affine de l'espace des paramètres. Dans cette partie, nous donnons une classification de tous ces espaces affines avec leurs solutions algébriques associées. La preuve du théorème n'utilise pas la notion d'équations de Picard-Fuchs. On pourra constater que les solutions coïncident avec les solutions obtenues récemment par Doran qui a utilisé des déformations des surfaces elliptiques avec quatres fibres singulières et leurs équations de Picard-Fuchs associées. Dans la suite, on va essayer de donner une explication partielle de cette coïncidence. Rappelons que chaque solution d'une équation de Painlevé 6 donnée est gouvernée par une déformation isomonodromique d'un système Fuchsian approprié possédant quatre points singuliers. Nous disons qu'une telle déformation est géométrique si le système fondamental de solutions est entièrement constituté d'intégrales Abéliennes, qui dépendent algébriquement du paramètre de déformation. Une déformation géométrique d'un système Fuchsien est isomonodormique et définit une solution algébrique d'une équation de Painlevé 6 appropriée. Quand ceci est vrai, nous disons que la solution algébrique de l'équation de Painlevé 6 est d'origine géométrique. Nous montrons que lorsque une solution satisfait une famille d'équations de Painlevé 6, alors ils existent aux moins deux autres familles d'équations de Painlevé 6, telles que cette solution soient d'origine géométrique pour les deux familles. Dans le deuxième partie, on va présenter quelques définitions et notions de base sur les systèmes à retard. Le modèle choisi sera présenté, ainsi que l'existence et l'unicité des solutions pour les équations différentielles fonctionnelles (EDFR) associées. On introduit les méthodes des fonctionnelles de Lyapunov-Krasovskii et de fonction de Razumikhin, qui donnent des conditions suffisantes pour assurer la stabilité de ces systèmes à retard. Puis, on considère des classes de systèmes incertains à retard dans l'état et dans la commande. En utilisant des techniques de Lyapunov, on propose des classes de contrôleurs continus, qui assurent la stabilité globale uniforme exponentielle de ces systèmes en boucle fermée, en imposant quelques conditions assorties sur les incertitudes. La fonction de Laypunov quadratique du système nominal stable (c'est-à-dire, le système assosié en l'absence des incertitudes et du retard) est utilisé comme fonction de Lyapunov candidate du système global. Puis, on va étudier la stabilité absolue d'une classe de systèmes à retard de type de Lurie. Cette classe est présentée comme une interconnexion du feedback d'un système dynamique linéaire et d'une non-linéarité staisfaisant la condition du secteur. En utilisant quelques inégalités intégrales, on obtient une nouvelle condition suffisante de stabilité absolue présentée sous forme d'inégalités matricielles linéaires (LMI). Cette condition améliore celle donnée par Han. Par la suite, on utilisera cette nouvelle condition pour construire un contrôleur basé sur un observateur dépendant du retard, tel que le système erreur soit présenté comme une interconnexion du feedback d'un système linéaire et d'une non-linéarité multiple dépendante aussi du retard et satisfaisant la condition du secteur. Dans la conception de l'observateur, on va étendre les travaux d'Arcak, Kokotovic et Fan dans le cas sans retard.

L'objet de ce travail de thèse est le développement d'une chaîne de synthèse de fréquences optiques en vue de mesurer la fréquence d'un laser nd : yag double en fréquence et stabilise sur une transition de l'iode a 563. 2 thz/532 nm. La mesure est basée sur l'utilisation de deux étalons secondaires de fréquence optique co 2/oso 4 et dl/rb opérant a 29 thz/10. 3 m et 385 thz/778 nm respectivement ; ces deux étalons ayant une exactitude de 1. 3 x 10 1 3 (4hz) et 5 x 10 - 1 2 (2 khz). Cette dernière valeur représente l'incertitude ultime du dispositif de mesure que nous avons développé. Nous utilisons deux diodes lasers opérant à 1. 064 m et 1. 551 m respectivement. La différence de fréquences entre ces deux diodes est comparée à l'harmonique 3 de la fréquence de l'étalon co 2/oso 4. Deux doublages de fréquence indépendants permettent de relier ces deux diodes laser aux deux étalons dl/rb et nd : yag/i 2. Des problèmes liés à l'élargissement de battements optiques n'ont pas permis de donner un résultat concluant sur la valeur de cette fréquence. Nous avons donc eu recours a un laser femtoseconde couplé à une fibre en silice à bande interdite photonique. Finalement, la fréquence du laser nd : yag/i 2 ainsi mesurée est : v(nd : yag/i 2) = 563 260 223 511. 6 (1. 2) khz ce résultat est en bon accord avec la recommandation du bureau international des poids et mesures (bipm).

Cette thèse est une contribution à l'étude de la dynamique et du contrôle des oscillations grande-échelle qui se développent en régime subsonique dans le sillage d'un corps de révolution modélisant le corps central d'un lanceur. Pour plusieurs configurations (disque, sphère, culot franc), la transition stationnaire/instationnaire est caractérisée par une étude de stabilité de l'écoulement axisymétrique à faible nombre de Reynolds. On montre tout d'abord que les oscillations sont liées à une instabilité absolue du sillage proche. On utilise ensuite une approche globale de la stabilité, mieux adaptée aux écoulements non parallèles. Une unique séquence de bifurcation est mise en évidence pour cette classe d'écoulements, impliquant un mode stationnaire et un mode oscillant à basse fréquence. Une analyse basée sur la théorie des formes normales montre qu'au seuil d'apparition des instationnarités, la fréquence et l'organisation spatiale de l'écoulement sont fixées par l'interaction non linéaire de ces modes. On montre également qu'augmenter la compressibilité affaiblit la production des perturbations et augmente leur transport, ce qui induit une stabilisation de l'écoulement. Une analyse de sensibilité des valeurs propres à un forçage stationnaire permet ensuite de développer une approche systématique du contrôle en boucle ouverte en régime compressible. Cette approche est appliquée au culot franc, ce qui constitue un premier pas dans la perspective d'un contrôle de l'écoulement en configuration industrielle. Diverses méthodes ont été analysées, notamment l'introduction d'un! corps secondaire, un dépôt d'énergie ou un! souffla ge au culot («base bleed»).

abstract: ABSTRACT Research on self-control theory (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990) consistently supports its' central proposition that low self-control significantly affects crime. The theory includes other predictions, which have received far less empirical scrutiny. Among these is the argument that self-control is developed early in childhood and that individual differences then persist over time. Gottfredson and Hirschi contend that once established by age ten, self-control remains relatively stable over one's life-course (stability postulate). To determine the empirical status of Gottfredson and Hirschi's "stability postulate," a meta-analysis on existing empirical studies was conducted. Results for this study support the contentions made by Gottfredson and Hirschi, however the inclusion of various moderating variables significantly influenced this relationship. We present new results on absolute stability for BDF-ADI (Backward differentiation formula Alternating Direction Implicit) methods applied to a linear advection and diffusion equations. Unconditional absolute stability of the BDF2-ADI method is proven for advection and diffusion separately, as well as to the BDF3-ADI method for the purely-diffusive case. Conditional absolute stability of the BDF4-ADI is also proven for the purely-diffusive case, and stability regions for BDF3-ADI and BDF4- ADI are given in terms of the PDE coefficients and numerical parameters. Lastly, numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results and conjectures. These experiments also suggest future work.

碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>物理研究所<br>93<br>Part A: A linear quadrupole mass spectrometer operating in the third stability region [(a, q) ≈ (3, 3)] has been developed and utilized to obtain the mass spectra of multiply charged protein ions generated by electrospray ionization. The spectra were acquired by scanning the frequency of the quadrupole with a home-built wide-band power amplifier from 400 to 100 kHz at constant voltage amplitudes in the range of 100 V. A resolution approaching R1/2 = 200 was achieved for doubly charged gramicidin S ions at m/z 570.5. Besides the experiments, a computer simulation was utilized to discuss the results of experiments. Further improvement of the mass resolution is expected when a higher voltage power amplifier is used.
Part B: A new technique for determining the masses of nanoparticles in a quadrupole ion trap has been developed in our group. When a particle is introduced into the ion trap and trapped, mass-to-charge ratio of the particle is determined by varying the voltage and RF frequency. Computer programs were utilized to speed the data analysis. Two kinds of programs were compared to testify the validity of data analysis.
