Abstract:
Founded at the end of the thirteenth century by the Earls of Ferrette [Pfirt] and fallen thereafter under the rule of the Habsburg, the town of Thann had an ambiguous status, because it was at the same time a seigniorial town and the chief-town of the seigniory (the bailiwick of Thann counted up to 42 villages). As a seigniorial town Thann was placed under the dependency of the Habsburg, but it benefited from a significant level of autonomy, comparable to certain Imperial towns. Being wealthy, and since 1486 the headquarter of a treasury, Thann could be considered as the true economic capital of the Austrian Upper Alsace. It even ruled over the villages under its responsibility with an authority that made it almost the equivalent of a territorial ruler. The community of villages suffered from the supervision by the Thann people, especially concerning tax distribution and the reglementation of rural craftwork. Its remarkable geographic location also had a noticeable impact upon Thann. Situated at the mouth of the Thur Valley, it controlled the road leading to the Bussang pass and was erected on one of the main trade routes between the Empire and the Kingdom of France. The linguistic limits were meandering indeed within Thann bailiwick itself. Thus, five "welche" (French-speaking) villages belonged to the bailiwick. Knowledge of the French language was rather prevalent in Thann, as being bilingual was a prerequisite for all elected officials willing to reach high-level positions. From the religious point of view, in the seventeenth century Thann asserted itself as one of the main strongholds of the Catholic counter-Reformation movement in Upper Alsace

This case study research investigated the extent to which Vietnamese teachers understood the concept of learner autonomy and how their beliefs about this concept were applied in their teaching practices. Data were collected through two phases of the study and revealed that teachers generally lacked understanding about learner autonomy; there was an alignment between this lack of understanding and teachers' actual teaching practices regarding learner autonomy. The findings of this study will provide teachers and policy-makers new insights into learner autonomy against the backdrop of educational reforms in Vietnam.

Abstract:
The momentum investment strategy, which buys recent winner stocks and sells recent loser stocks, earns returns that are simply too good to be explained by traditional finance theories. This thesis extends our understanding of the sources of momentum profits. The research shows that part of the seemingly anomalous returns can be explained by the market's reaction to public news, is affected by how delisting returns are calculated, and is biased by ignoring the time-varying risk of the trading strategy.

Abstract:
This research is one of the first trials to evaluate the effectiveness of tailored nutritional counselling in treating malnutrition in outpatients with COPD. Nearly three-quarters of outpatients in Vietnam were identified with malnutrition. This research identified that malnutrition in COPD patients was associated with adverse health outcomes and that tailored nutritional counselling could modify malnutrition status by changing eating behaviours and dietary intake of patients. It emphasized the important role of dietitians in developing appropriate food-based strategies tailored to individual circumstances to promote weight gain, prevent weight loss, improve nutritional status, functional outcomes, and quality of life for COPD patients. While undertaken in Vietnam, the results may be applicable globally with implications of clinical nutrition practice.

Untachai, Subchat. "The effect of store name, brand name and store atmosphere on customers' perceived quality-value and store preference in the Udon Thani region of Thailand." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2007. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/259.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study was designed to provide a quantitative measure of the influence of store name, brand name, and store atmospherics on retail preference in a study of the retailing industry in Udon Thani province, Thailand. The objectives of this study are twofold, (I) to examine the extent to which perceived store value is related to store preference, and (2) to examine the relationship between perceptions of store name, brand name, store atmospherics, and store value. The research included a pilot test using undergraduate business students in Rajabhat Institute, Udon Thani for pretesting of the questionnaire items. Following this, the investigation into store image attributes and store value perceptions necessitated uncovering variables of interest. To do this a large-scale field study was conducted. The study consisted of surveying 430 households in Udon Thani province and 310 households in Khon Khaen province using a structured questionnaire. Respondents were asked to rate, on a seven-point semantic differential and Likert scale, their agreement or disagreement on various store image attributes. L1SREL 8.30 was used for data analysis since the proposed model is a simultaneous system of equations having latent constructs and multiple indicators. Further quantitative techniques, such as factor analysis, correlation, multiple regression, and chi-square, were also employed. The study found that consumers' perceived quality-value mediates the effects of perceived brand name and store atmospherics on store preference (behavioural intention to buy). In addition, consumers' perceived brand name has a more significant influence than store atmospherics on perceived quality-value. However, store atmospherics has a more significant role in influencing consumers' store preference than does consumers' perceived brand name.

Abstract:
The role of musical opportunity in the future commercial and cultural viability of North-West England is secured by social and economic policy that emphasises the contribution of musical entrepreneurs and consumers to creative industries of the region. Yet though opportunity and opportunity recognition have become prominent policy concerns through scholars' response being restricted to attempts to explain their quantity and performance before or after the event of practice clear distinction has been made between entrepreneurs and their historical and institutional habitats and status and wealth have been posed unquestioned as central motivations. In turn conceptual abstractions have reproduced visions of practical and instrumental economic men or powerless and inert human black boxes that are thrown around by socio-economic movements like other 'non-producers' and scholars' capacity to study the nature of musical opportunities within human experience has been limited. Musical opportunities are of especial value for understanding the nature of entrepreneurial opportunities and practice more widely because it is within the experience that commercial setting may provoke organizational creativity. This doctoral thesis aims to understand the nature of musical opportunity as experienced by musical entrepreneurs operating in and around the Mersey basin of North-West England and distinguish how musical opportunities can contribute to understanding entrepreneurial practice more widely. The normative conceptual abstraction away from experience is reversed, so that opportunity becomes articulated by the entrepreneurial imagination. Situating opportunities within everyday imaginative experiences, clear distinction between producers, consumers, habitats falls away, and a range of entrepreneurial experiences are revealed that relate critically to the assumption that opportunity recognition is driven by sober calculations and interests in wealth and status. A multi-sited longitudinal ethnographic approach employing narrative and observational research techniques participates with different moments and different territories of musical opportunity and entrepreneurial practice that find their presence in relation to each other. The findings show that musical opportunities are often at odds with the current manifestation of opportunity in the management studies literature because its 'rationality' is less affording of space to imagine and create and can often omit significant personal and social connections. Musical organization is shown to be co-created as entrepreneurs resist or are unable to reproduce opportunities that are distinctly commercial. Rather than restricted to purely artistic or commercial interests, musical opportunity is animated amidst the interplay of human resources like entrepreneurial imagination and versatility and the historical and institutional settings musical entrepreneurs and consumers encounter throughout their lives. This maintains the authority of opportunity recognition for understanding organizational creativity through posing the experience in raw and mobile state: imagination.

Kutscheid, Gloria J. "More than trees." Virtual Press, 1986. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/473196.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to complete a series of photographs utilizing trees as metaphors. This series of photographs is composed into book form for possible publication. It presents the psychological and symbolic impact of trees in different environments and from different perspectives through the development of a unique style of creative composition. The format consists of text and photographs. This project develops a working definition of metaphors and an approach using trees as the medium to convey various symbolic and psychological references. Both associated and inferred types of symbolisms are used. This type of approach is not necessarily unique and has been evidenced in the work of such "populist" poets as Robert Frost and the late photographer-poet Gordon Parks. With the basic inventory of symbols and psychological reference associations, whole trees, parts of trees, and/or groups of trees are identified to illustrate through the photographic medium that metaphors do indeed exist and can be found in trees. Photographs are produced, edited and composed to produce not only pleasing aesthetics, but also to provide continuity throughout the series. Photographs vary in size, shape, contrast, and composition to provide variation in the format.

Abstract:
As a dyslexic child, I always had trouble finding my voice. It's hard to express yourself in words, when you struggle with them. For me words always come later when I write. But most people don't understand how I feel. If your synapses fire off at the right time how can you image what it would be like it they didn't? That's where fiction comes in. If you can override someone's lack of experience with the use of a metaphor, then by distancing the reader from reality with an allegory, you can get to truth that's hard to capture any other way. You can also simply tell the truth in your writing with plain nonfiction. For me, fiction and nonfiction are a way for me to claim my voice and convey truth. Only a reader can decided what that truth looks like.

Abstract:
This practice-led research contextualises and advances the novel as a form within the fiction of football (commonly referred to as soccer in Australia). This is a field which has undergone very little academic scrutiny. Through adapting and developing a distant reading model of abstraction and using it in conjunction with closer textual analyses, this research develops the first historiography of football fiction. The model is used to realise a set of broad conventions, map relationships across the body of work and identify growth areas. The thesis argues that football fiction exhibits qualities which warrant the works being described collectively as a genre. A comparison of young adult and adult football fictions will highlight the similarities and differences that occur in literary technique in texts aimed at these readerships, as they appear to be distinct to football fiction. The generic conventions and identified divergences are used to inform and are reflected in an original novel-length work of young adult fantasy football fiction, entitled Blaming David Beckham. The objectives of this novel, as an extension to the research, are to explore and demonstrate the findings and advance the understanding of the generic elements of football fiction.

Morrison, Kristine, and res cand@acu edu au. "Virtuous Nursing: More caring than science and more scientific than care." Australian Catholic University. School of Arts, 2004. http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/digitaltheses/public/adt-acuvp69.25092005.

Full text
Abstract:
Western nursing has been deeply influenced by Christianity and more latterly by the Nightingale ideal of the good nurse. Both views have, as their foundation, the belief that there is an objectively knowable good way to live. This belief presents problems to the modern nurse and has, in large part, been rejected. However, the rejection of this objective moral foundation for nursing has resulted in a crisis of confidence about the best way to articulate what it is to be a good nurse. Two new ways have emerged in recent times. A scientific approach to nursing has elevated the work of nursing to increasingly complex levels and resulted in significantly improved health outcomes for patients. This scientific approach to nursing has manifested itself in two ways. It has resulted in the development of theories of nursing based on psychological concepts. Parallel to this approach has been the tendency for nursing itself to become increasingly scientific and nurses in turn to be technologists. It was thought that nursing that was increasingly shaped in scientific terms would achieve professional status because it presented a scientifically verifiable knowledge base. At the same time, however, it has resulted in an understanding of what counts as being a good nurse being reduced to the nurse’s ability to perform tasks to a high level of clinical precision. Alternatively, nursing as a care-based activity has made a caring attitude the moral centre point of nursing. On this view objective standards of practice are regarded as secondary to the emotional care that the nurse brings to the patient. This belief arose in part because notions of the objectivity of science were challenged as ideological rather than the dispassionate form of knowledge that scientists claimed. It was fostered by the emergence and dominance of phenomenology and the influence of the feminist care ethic. There was also some anxiety about what had been lost in nursing by the embrace of science. In addition, the care ethic seemed to promise the possibility of defining nursing in its own terms in order to make nursing a distinct professional body. However, the demands of an ethic of care have proven elusive and, in the minds of some, unattainable. Given these criticisms of both these ways of thinking about nursing it is proposed that nursing think of itself as a virtues-based activity. Virtues theory incorporates within it the strengths of the two formerly mentioned ways of describing nursing without being subject to the limitations of each. Virtues such as love friendliness, compassion , courage and conscientiousness and the intellectual virtue of prudence or practical wisdom enable nurses to realise that goal in their practice. In this thesis virtue theory will be analysed and applied to nursing in the following way. Some Aristotelian concepts will be identified and their application t professional ethics by contemporary virtue theorists will be discussed. This involves and explication of some virtues that enhance shared conceptions of the practice of nursing. The significance of the good nurse in the shaping of good nursing practice will be considered alongside a reflection on the place of moral luck in nursing practice. It is argued that when nurses think of themselves as participating in a tradition of health care they find meaning in their work, Finally an understanding of nursing as a virtue-based activity clarifies good practice in such a way that nurses are able to elicit from it the qualities needed for its good practice.

Abstract:
This research paper explains the formulation and implementation of a mobile application called THANI. The purpose of this mobile application is to connect clients and consumers. In this application, the clients (restaurants) have the possibility to publish photos of their dishes, in order to obtain greater demand. A characteristic of THANI is that the client must publish the nutritional information of the dish. The restaurants subscribed to the application must be from South and East Lima and will be charged a commission of 10% without delivery and 20% with delivery. On the other hand, the consumers of this Application are people from 18 to 35 years old, who will be offered different benefits according to their category of client. In order to validate the business idea, different tools have been used such as the Concierge and interviews, both to experts and consumers. In addition, interactions were made in social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, and a web page was created, through which we were able to estimate the levels of demand based on paid publications. These estimates allowed us to create our sales forecast, and therefore we can make our financial statements. This show a positive profitability in the next 3 years. Finally, unconventional sources were chosen to finance THANI. These will be explained in the following lines.

Discourse analysis together with gender studies have been relevant to assess how human beings express their identities, beliefs and cultural values in their language use. This assessment in this research took place with online conversation on the Internet, through a program called Messenger Live (MSN). The aims were (i) to describe the conversation in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), (ii) to assess how women were portrayed in an online conversation between a man and a woman known to each other in the real world through the analysis of lexicogrammatical choices, and (iii) to support my claim that this conversation occurred between a couple of friends who are more than just friends. The participants of this research are a woman from Florianópolis, SC - Brazil, and a man from São Paulo, SP - Brazil, regular users of MSN, aged twenty-five and twenty-eight years old respectively that are having a "more than friends" relationship through the MSN. The conversations were analyzed employing the SFL theory, more specifically, the transitivity system. The results indicated that women (mostly Janice) have an agent role in the conversations analyzed, but this agency is only possible through the thoughts of men (mostly Mark). Positively, this agency, even being through the thoughts of Mark, did not cause any kind of awkwardness, nor even when the woman was more aggressive with the man (in a more Interpersonal perspective). The relevance of this study is to raise awareness of Internet users about their beliefs, identities, and cultural values expressed in their language use towards and by women, so that they can reflect upon their Internet practices taking into consideration that it may also reflect on their personal real lives. For the field of language teaching, the relevance of this study is to teach our students the multiple ways in which language can be used to express ourselves and, thus, create meaning.

Abstract:
More Than Heavy Rain brings together poems of intense observation culled from a life lived mostly outside. Set mostly around the poet’s home along the Watauga River in northeast Tennessee, the poems also reach out to such distant locations as Montana, Alaska, and post-war Germany. Some of them reconstruct the poet’s childhood in rural West Virginia. Some examine his family history, the events and relatives who helped determine the way he views the world.

Abstract:
It is pointless to track one's progress along the energies of the cosmic sea, when independent of the immensely malleable sonic waves, and erase the cessation of elevation. The release never reaches the essence and the static repels them when they are devoid of the white dwarfs or their spiral arms: there is nothing tangible in not exploiting the mind/body connection. At last the summit is exalted. Miniscule solar rays expand into darkness, unhinged and must be nurtured, thought by thought, until magnified in nerve impulse and then put to rest by the still water, thus more quickly compiled, constricted into pools of electrical circuits connecting this to that, white and black and back and forth. But how seldom are we blinded to the expanding, encroaching, slashed and shredded consciousness, thinly veiled by Martian reproductions, shielding how expansive they are retreating from one another, unbraided and how often they are anchored about! Moreover, if we depart for the uncounted millennia any thought of transparent application, in its inertness, we lose sight that it is not only here and there, but also along an infinite length, a dimensionless promontory, that the seamless past/future only multiplied. The absence of the bottom/top and its technology disguised that everywhere timeless presence has remained static since the stars muddied the cosmos--------

Abstract:
Concurrency is concerned with systems of multiple computing agents that interact with each other. Bisimilarity is one of the main representatives of these. Concurrent Constrain Programming (ccp) is a formalism that combines the traditional and algebraic view of process calculi with a declarative one based upon first-order logic. The standard definition of bisimilarity is not completely satisfactory for ccp since it yields an equivalence that is too fine grained. By building upon recent foundational investigations, we introduce a labeled transition semantics and a novel notion of bisimilarity that is fully abstract w.r.t. the observational equivalence in ccp. When the state space of a system is finite, the ordinary notion of bisimilarity can be computed via the partition refinement algorithm, but unfortunately, this algorithm does not work for ccp bisimilarity. Hence, we provide an algorithm that allows us to verify strong bisimilarity for ccp, modifying the algorithm by using a pre-refinement and a partition function based on the irredundant bisimilarity. Weak bisimilarity is a central behavioral equivalence in process calculi and it is obtained from the strong case by taking into account only the actions that are observable in the system. Typically the standard partition refinement can also be used for deciding weak bisimilarity simply by using Milner's reduction from weak to strong; a technique referred to as saturation. We demonstrate that the above-mentioned saturation technique does not work for ccp. We give a reduction that allows us to use the ccp partition refinement algorithm for deciding this equivalence.

Stemming from my own fixation on trying to understand the actions, decisions and thought processes of those around me my work explores the difference between internal and external lives. I construct “brain spaces”; whether my own or someone else’s I strive to understand the decisions they have made and the stories we are a part of. I combine thoughts, feeling and sentiments which I have collected over my life to make objects that act as intermediaries, allowing others to imagine stepping into a mind other than their own. I attempt to bring the landscape of the mind into the physical plane, and to cross the impassable threshold between what is inside and outside of the psyche.

Abstract:
The issue of Ukrainian EU membership was highlighted during the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity, when Ukrainians emerged on to the streets to protest against then-President Yanukovych’s refusal to sign his country’s Association Agreement with the European Union. Since then, the country has started moving closer to Europe, seemingly as supported by a majority of its population. Meanwhile, Russia has occupied Crimea, and there is a war in the Donbas region of the East. The thesis argues that there are no major regional differences when it comes to attitudes towards the European Union in Ukraine. Some differences could be noted in the South relating to the participants’ attitudes toward Ukrainian independence and travels to non-communist countries during the Soviet era, but this had no apparent connection to attitudes towards the Ukrainian state and the European Union today. Overall, the participants were positive to EU membership for Ukraine, as well as NATO membership, and to these organisations overall. The desire to join NATO seems to be out of a desire to obtain hard security against Russia, and the desire to join the EU seems to both be because of the symbolic value for Ukraine’s status as a ‘truly’ European country, as well as for the developmental benefits.

Full text
Abstract:
Flooding is a natural phenomenon and in the past Thai people have adapted to flood events. However over the years land degradation, deforestation and bad urban practices have exacerbated the impact of flood disasters. This study of flood management in Thailand shows how human activities and interventions have impacted on the river basin system. This research focuses on the vulnerability to flood hazard of the people living or working near the Chao Phraya River. The case study is of the community living or working in the proximity of Wat Bang Luang (Bang Luang Temple) of the Pathum Thani Province, Thailand. This research explores the capacity of communities to live with or cope with floods. Their adaptations to changes in flood regimes will depend on several factors: political (especially when Thailand has a long history of preoccupation with engineering and technological solutions as the main approach to disaster response), economic, ecological (human modification to flood plains), social (kin-based networks) and cultural factors. The data collected from the target community showed a power struggle between Thai culture and the dominant hazard management paradigm. This research put a human face on natural disaster and looked at the issue of flooding from the experiences of ordinary people. The findings showed that some members of the community are resilient while others are passive and are more vulnerable to floods. However, it is important not to label any individual or group as either vulnerable or resilient as people can be both at the same time and policy makers need to build on the strengths, rather than focus on the weaknesses and on offering emergency relief.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine how people act and respond to the different aspects given/experienced when using social media platforms. The investigation is a qualitive study based on eight interviews with media-students aged between 23 to 25 at the Linneaus university, Sweden. The theoretical frame of the study is founded on the theory of Goffmans studies regarding the presentation of self. The investigation shows that the respondents act acordingly to the different roles as described by Goffman, althogh there´s a difference when compared to common face-to-face interaction since the option to choose which impressions to give is bigger when interacting through social media channels.

Dad, Mohammadi Mersedeh. "Reading more than Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis." Thesis, University of Chester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620329.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reclaims the analysis of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. It is mindful of analysis of the stereotypical, and partial tendencies of orientalist representations of Satrapi’s work by both Iranian officials and “Western” media and readership. Themes are detected from this analysis and pertain to the message and intention of the author to create her work. The intentio lectoris1 (i.e. what audiences believe or led to believe) proposed that orientalist paradigms present the meaning of the work or Satrapi’s agenda, i.e. the intentio auctoris. Persepolis has been enthusiastically received all around the world, except in Iran. It has been described and interpreted as the critique of a courageous girl against the foundations of the Iranian Islamic Republic. Notwithstanding the success, the graphic novel and the animated movie derived from it in 2007 have been banned by the Iranian government, and subsequently Marjane Satrapi has been refused entry into the country. The polarised reception of Satrapi’s work in Iran and worldwide, is contextualised within (neo) orientalist critique. I detect in these receptions both potentials and problems. Reclaiming aspects of Persepolis’ analysis that have been excluded from and therefore devalued by external agencies is affirmed as a necessary and important contribution. However, I note that the overwhelming reluctance amongst “Western” media and news reporters to speak of Satrapi’s dual and neutral position, or to grasp at specificity her intentio auctoris, prevents us from a thorough discussion of their analysis. Satrapi’s work is ultimately left in the hands of clichés. I attempt to analyse Persepolis in such a way that it not only affirms rationality, fluidity, and duality, but also offers new and beneficial ways to argue Satrapi’s position and intention. My thesis is thus partly rooted in a feminist standpoint perspective to give voice to Satrapi’s agenda. What is more, it converses with similar restrictive regulations and contextualises them within an analysis of selected post-revolutionary autobiographical literature. My ultimate goal is to analyse the Iranian position towards Persepolis by making sense of the theological and political thought of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution, and the concept of velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurists) and the national and international responses to it in a way in which to take and transform the representation of Persepolis and Iranian culture consequently. This is done by explaining the current Iranian situation and Iranian responses to internal and external threats. Theological analyses and the explication of some of the historical complexities affecting modern Iran (especially after the revolution) would be beneficial along the way.
