Full textPost-mortem Computed Tomography Angiography (PMCTA) is a growing technique. Our work consisted in the application of the protocols of PMCTA on several types of populations. First, we gained experience regarding deaths in a context of great height falls. Then, we had the chance to work a rare collection of mummified archaeological hearts and very well preserved, dating between the XVth and XVIIth centuries. We also studied a well-preserved artificial mummy from French Brittany dating from the XVIIth century, characterized by an intact abdominal aortic and iliac tree. We applied the first PMCTA of a mummy of more than 350 years. Finally, we tried to adapt the adult protocol of PMCTA to children, using a porcine model. First, we tested a modification of the injection procedure by replacing the surgical cannulas by radiological introducers. Based on these results, we carried out a series of PMCTAs on pigs. We used two different machines. Overall vascular opacification was satisfactory for all groups. The realization of the MPMCTA with the Virtangio(r) machine proved very complex due to the upper limit of pressure. Spearman correlation tests showed a significant relationship between anthropometric characteristics of pigs, injection parameters and percentage of opacified segments. A higher percentage of opacification is obtained for individuals of smaller weights, with comparatively smaller quantities of contrast agent injected. Our work confirms the complementarities between classical techniques of post-mortem investigations and modern imaging, with or without injection of contrast media. It also allows us to foresee a rich future of research and interdisciplinarity in the fields of archaeological, anthropobiological, medico-legal and radiological researches

Full textThis doctoral thesis aims to understand the specific ritual burial practices in the early twenty-first century. The classic ritual analyses (structural-functionalist and interactionist) led us to focus on the ritual process rather than on the ritual itself, so we adopted a ritual action perspective. To reduce the focus on the social reality studied, we posit that among the various transformations of funerals, the phenomenon of cremation is a gateway to understand this specificity. This thesis has two objectives: 1) The first is descriptive. In the path of dying, from a relational understanding, we explored the funeral process, notably the cremation, as a mode of body transformation as an operational chain of dying. Our data was collected through the method of observing participation in funeral practices. The phenomenon of cremation, as a practice combining the attributes of the recent funeral evolution from the 1980s, led to our selection of a diverse sample in two sociocultural contexts (France and Quebec) and two cities (Strasbourg and Montreal) where the cremation rate is historically high. 2) The second objective is to understand the burial ritual from this data, focusing on the ritual surrounding the funeral process, while explaining the setting, form and act of social relations. In addition to a socio-anthropological reading of the organisation of the contextual relations behind ritual, a psychosocial reading completes the interpretation of the ritual actions. Our comprehension of funerary rituals shows the complexity of this social practice. In one hand as actions, through interpersonal relations, appeal to reflexive resources (enabling) and allow the reduction of dissonant state caused by death. On the other hand, as actions surrounding the rules of the social system. This new data on the preponderance of these relational features within the current funeral rituals, aims to understand both the diversification of funeral practices and their standardisation

Full textWalter Thiel’s method for the preservation of cadavers was published in 1992. Unlike conventional preservation techniques, this method provides a spectacular lifelike flexibility. Despite of its interesting possibilities in learning and training for clinical practitioners, this technique has had a poor development around the world. Simulation represents a revolution in medical education because it allows students to train before act on real patients, particularly the situations with a high iatrogenic risk. The question raised by our work is that this double paradox: the Thiel’s method is very interesting but still not well developed, and secondly, the simulation has expanded enormously but does not take much account of the potential learning on cadavers. In several studies exploring various aspects of Thiel’s method, we will demonstrate the possibilities of cadavers preserved by this method in terms of clinical applications for teaching and research in the fields of simulation in anesthesia and surgery

Full textHaving to do with the processes of decomposition, the human societies react by practicing cultural interventions of 'thanato-metamorphosis' on bodies, as the mummification. In Sicily we find a practice of mummification really original (XVI th ÷ XIX th centuries), practiced by the monks of the religious congregations, which develops according to a series of local variations. This practice is the fruit of long and not definitive experimentation, consisting in an empirical method of dehydration of human remains. The process of conservation of bodies took place in the subterranean rooms annexed to churches, provided with colanders. The mummification reflected particulars functions and ideologies, deeply tied to the economic possibilities of the individuals, necessaries to maintain the economic and social status of belonging. The slow disappearance of the mummification’s practice goes up to the edict of Saint-Cloud of the 1804, which marks the legislative interdiction of burial’s bodies in churches and the appearance of first cemeteries extra moenia. However, many elements of secular practice of mummification have survived. By the informations gathered on mummification’s practice we think that the practice was well rooted in the sicilian world, after the legislative decree of the 1804, and that it has survived, by influencing to bury and the relation with the Death until our days
