Nationalism, patriotism, politics, ethnicity, subcultural affiliation, gender, sexuality, career, family: there are countless factors that may play a role in shaping an identity and which can also affect how we are perceived by others. Abstract:
The role of musical opportunity in the future commercial and cultural viability of North-West England is secured by social and economic policy that emphasises the contribution of musical entrepreneurs and consumers to creative industries of the region. Yet though opportunity and opportunity recognition have become prominent policy concerns through scholars' response being restricted to attempts to explain their quantity and performance before or after the event of practice clear distinction has been made between entrepreneurs and their historical and institutional habitats and status and wealth have been posed unquestioned as central motivations. In turn conceptual abstractions have reproduced visions of practical and instrumental economic men or powerless and inert human black boxes that are thrown around by socio-economic movements like other 'non-producers' and scholars' capacity to study the nature of musical opportunities within human experience has been limited. Musical opportunities are of especial value for understanding the nature of entrepreneurial opportunities and practice more widely because it is within the experience that commercial setting may provoke organizational creativity. This doctoral thesis aims to understand the nature of musical opportunity as experienced by musical entrepreneurs operating in and around the Mersey basin of North-West England and distinguish how musical opportunities can contribute to understanding entrepreneurial practice more widely. The normative conceptual abstraction away from experience is reversed, so that opportunity becomes articulated by the entrepreneurial imagination. Situating opportunities within everyday imaginative experiences, clear distinction between producers, consumers, habitats falls away, and a range of entrepreneurial experiences are revealed that relate critically to the assumption that opportunity recognition is driven by sober calculations and interests in wealth and status. A multi-sited longitudinal ethnographic approach employing narrative and observational research techniques participates with different moments and different territories of musical opportunity and entrepreneurial practice that find their presence in relation to each other. The findings show that musical opportunities are often at odds with the current manifestation of opportunity in the management studies literature because its 'rationality' is less affording of space to imagine and create and can often omit significant personal and social connections. Musical organization is shown to be co-created as entrepreneurs resist or are unable to reproduce opportunities that are distinctly commercial. Rather than restricted to purely artistic or commercial interests, musical opportunity is animated amidst the interplay of human resources like entrepreneurial imagination and versatility and the historical and institutional settings musical entrepreneurs and consumers encounter throughout their lives. This maintains the authority of opportunity recognition for understanding organizational creativity through posing the experience in raw and mobile state: imagination.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to complete a series of photographs utilizing trees as metaphors. This series of photographs is composed into book form for possible publication. It presents the psychological and symbolic impact of trees in different environments and from different perspectives through the development of a unique style of creative composition. The format consists of text and photographs. This project develops a working definition of metaphors and an approach using trees as the medium to convey various symbolic and psychological references. Both associated and inferred types of symbolisms are used. This type of approach is not necessarily unique and has been evidenced in the work of such "populist" poets as Robert Frost and the late photographer-poet Gordon Parks. With the basic inventory of symbols and psychological reference associations, whole trees, parts of trees, and/or groups of trees are identified to illustrate through the photographic medium that metaphors do indeed exist and can be found in trees. Photographs are produced, edited and composed to produce not only pleasing aesthetics, but also to provide continuity throughout the series. Photographs vary in size, shape, contrast, and composition to provide variation in the format.

Abstract:
As a dyslexic child, I always had trouble finding my voice. It's hard to express yourself in words, when you struggle with them. For me words always come later when I write. But most people don't understand how I feel. If your synapses fire off at the right time how can you image what it would be like it they didn't? That's where fiction comes in. If you can override someone's lack of experience with the use of a metaphor, then by distancing the reader from reality with an allegory, you can get to truth that's hard to capture any other way. You can also simply tell the truth in your writing with plain nonfiction. For me, fiction and nonfiction are a way for me to claim my voice and convey truth. Only a reader can decided what that truth looks like.

Morrison, Kristine, and res cand@acu edu au. "Virtuous Nursing: More caring than science and more scientific than care." Australian Catholic University. School of Arts, 2004. http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/digitaltheses/public/adt-acuvp69.25092005.

Full text
Abstract:
Western nursing has been deeply influenced by Christianity and more latterly by the Nightingale ideal of the good nurse. Both views have, as their foundation, the belief that there is an objectively knowable good way to live. This belief presents problems to the modern nurse and has, in large part, been rejected. However, the rejection of this objective moral foundation for nursing has resulted in a crisis of confidence about the best way to articulate what it is to be a good nurse. Two new ways have emerged in recent times. A scientific approach to nursing has elevated the work of nursing to increasingly complex levels and resulted in significantly improved health outcomes for patients. This scientific approach to nursing has manifested itself in two ways. It has resulted in the development of theories of nursing based on psychological concepts. Parallel to this approach has been the tendency for nursing itself to become increasingly scientific and nurses in turn to be technologists. It was thought that nursing that was increasingly shaped in scientific terms would achieve professional status because it presented a scientifically verifiable knowledge base. At the same time, however, it has resulted in an understanding of what counts as being a good nurse being reduced to the nurse’s ability to perform tasks to a high level of clinical precision. Alternatively, nursing as a care-based activity has made a caring attitude the moral centre point of nursing. On this view objective standards of practice are regarded as secondary to the emotional care that the nurse brings to the patient. This belief arose in part because notions of the objectivity of science were challenged as ideological rather than the dispassionate form of knowledge that scientists claimed. It was fostered by the emergence and dominance of phenomenology and the influence of the feminist care ethic. There was also some anxiety about what had been lost in nursing by the embrace of science. In addition, the care ethic seemed to promise the possibility of defining nursing in its own terms in order to make nursing a distinct professional body. However, the demands of an ethic of care have proven elusive and, in the minds of some, unattainable. Given these criticisms of both these ways of thinking about nursing it is proposed that nursing think of itself as a virtues-based activity. Virtues theory incorporates within it the strengths of the two formerly mentioned ways of describing nursing without being subject to the limitations of each. Virtues such as love friendliness, compassion , courage and conscientiousness and the intellectual virtue of prudence or practical wisdom enable nurses to realise that goal in their practice. In this thesis virtue theory will be analysed and applied to nursing in the following way. Some Aristotelian concepts will be identified and their application t professional ethics by contemporary virtue theorists will be discussed. This involves and explication of some virtues that enhance shared conceptions of the practice of nursing. The significance of the good nurse in the shaping of good nursing practice will be considered alongside a reflection on the place of moral luck in nursing practice. It is argued that when nurses think of themselves as participating in a tradition of health care they find meaning in their work, Finally an understanding of nursing as a virtue-based activity clarifies good practice in such a way that nurses are able to elicit from it the qualities needed for its good practice.

More Than Heavy Rain brings together poems of intense observation culled from a life lived mostly outside. Set mostly around the poet’s home along the Watauga River in northeast Tennessee, the poems also reach out to such distant locations as Montana, Alaska, and post-war Germany. Some of them reconstruct the poet’s childhood in rural West Virginia. Some examine his family history, the events and relatives who helped determine the way he views the world.

Discourse analysis together with gender studies have been relevant to assess how human beings express their identities, beliefs and cultural values in their language use. This assessment in this research took place with online conversation on the Internet, through a program called Messenger Live (MSN). The aims were (i) to describe the conversation in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), (ii) to assess how women were portrayed in an online conversation between a man and a woman known to each other in the real world through the analysis of lexicogrammatical choices, and (iii) to support my claim that this conversation occurred between a couple of friends who are more than just friends. The participants of this research are a woman from Florianópolis, SC - Brazil, and a man from São Paulo, SP - Brazil, regular users of MSN, aged twenty-five and twenty-eight years old respectively that are having a "more than friends" relationship through the MSN. The conversations were analyzed employing the SFL theory, more specifically, the transitivity system. The results indicated that women (mostly Janice) have an agent role in the conversations analyzed, but this agency is only possible through the thoughts of men (mostly Mark). Positively, this agency, even being through the thoughts of Mark, did not cause any kind of awkwardness, nor even when the woman was more aggressive with the man (in a more Interpersonal perspective). The relevance of this study is to raise awareness of Internet users about their beliefs, identities, and cultural values expressed in their language use towards and by women, so that they can reflect upon their Internet practices taking into consideration that it may also reflect on their personal real lives. For the field of language teaching, the relevance of this study is to teach our students the multiple ways in which language can be used to express ourselves and, thus, create meaning.

Abstract:
It is pointless to track one's progress along the energies of the cosmic sea, when independent of the immensely malleable sonic waves, and erase the cessation of elevation. The release never reaches the essence and the static repels them when they are devoid of the white dwarfs or their spiral arms: there is nothing tangible in not exploiting the mind/body connection. At last the summit is exalted. Miniscule solar rays expand into darkness, unhinged and must be nurtured, thought by thought, until magnified in nerve impulse and then put to rest by the still water, thus more quickly compiled, constricted into pools of electrical circuits connecting this to that, white and black and back and forth. But how seldom are we blinded to the expanding, encroaching, slashed and shredded consciousness, thinly veiled by Martian reproductions, shielding how expansive they are retreating from one another, unbraided and how often they are anchored about! Moreover, if we depart for the uncounted millennia any thought of transparent application, in its inertness, we lose sight that it is not only here and there, but also along an infinite length, a dimensionless promontory, that the seamless past/future only multiplied. The absence of the bottom/top and its technology disguised that everywhere timeless presence has remained static since the stars muddied the cosmos--------

Full text
Abstract:
This paper will examine specific processes involved within the decision-making process of how to allocate limited health care resources. I will start by discussing how in order to compare and differentiate between health states, we have created ranking systems, based on the health state’s impact on people’s quality of life, which health states need more care, and which can be most effectively treated. We evaluate impact on quality of life by assigning quality weights to years of life lived with that health state, which we call quality-adjusted life years, or QALYs. Next, I will discuss the problems with assigning quality weights to health states; specifically, the disability paradox, meaning the distinct differences between quality weights assigned by non-patients versus patients. After that, I will explain how depression defies the trend of the disability paradox, and causes our prior arguments about why patients and non-patients rate health states different to contradict themselves., This leads me to suggest that we should consider a different way of deciding between different quality weights. I examine the arguments for choosing higher or lower quality weights, and conclude that because we have a moral imperative to provide health care resources to those in need, particularly those who are disadvantaged, we should take the lower quality weights and err on the side of overspending on health states. Ultimately, this will create the greatest change in funding for health states like depression that go against the disability paradox. Finally, I address the economic trade-offs we have to consider if we make the decision to spend more on treating health states.

Abstract:
The issue of Ukrainian EU membership was highlighted during the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity, when Ukrainians emerged on to the streets to protest against then-President Yanukovych’s refusal to sign his country’s Association Agreement with the European Union. Since then, the country has started moving closer to Europe, seemingly as supported by a majority of its population. Meanwhile, Russia has occupied Crimea, and there is a war in the Donbas region of the East. The thesis argues that there are no major regional differences when it comes to attitudes towards the European Union in Ukraine. Some differences could be noted in the South relating to the participants’ attitudes toward Ukrainian independence and travels to non-communist countries during the Soviet era, but this had no apparent connection to attitudes towards the Ukrainian state and the European Union today. Overall, the participants were positive to EU membership for Ukraine, as well as NATO membership, and to these organisations overall. The desire to join NATO seems to be out of a desire to obtain hard security against Russia, and the desire to join the EU seems to both be because of the symbolic value for Ukraine’s status as a ‘truly’ European country, as well as for the developmental benefits.

The aim of this study is to examine how people act and respond to the different aspects given/experienced when using social media platforms. The investigation is a qualitive study based on eight interviews with media-students aged between 23 to 25 at the Linneaus university, Sweden. The theoretical frame of the study is founded on the theory of Goffmans studies regarding the presentation of self. The investigation shows that the respondents act acordingly to the different roles as described by Goffman, althogh there´s a difference when compared to common face-to-face interaction since the option to choose which impressions to give is bigger when interacting through social media channels.

Dad, Mohammadi Mersedeh. "Reading more than Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis." Thesis, University of Chester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620329.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reclaims the analysis of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. It is mindful of analysis of the stereotypical, and partial tendencies of orientalist representations of Satrapi’s work by both Iranian officials and “Western” media and readership. Themes are detected from this analysis and pertain to the message and intention of the author to create her work. The intentio lectoris1 (i.e. what audiences believe or led to believe) proposed that orientalist paradigms present the meaning of the work or Satrapi’s agenda, i.e. the intentio auctoris. Persepolis has been enthusiastically received all around the world, except in Iran. It has been described and interpreted as the critique of a courageous girl against the foundations of the Iranian Islamic Republic. Notwithstanding the success, the graphic novel and the animated movie derived from it in 2007 have been banned by the Iranian government, and subsequently Marjane Satrapi has been refused entry into the country. The polarised reception of Satrapi’s work in Iran and worldwide, is contextualised within (neo) orientalist critique. I detect in these receptions both potentials and problems. Reclaiming aspects of Persepolis’ analysis that have been excluded from and therefore devalued by external agencies is affirmed as a necessary and important contribution. However, I note that the overwhelming reluctance amongst “Western” media and news reporters to speak of Satrapi’s dual and neutral position, or to grasp at specificity her intentio auctoris, prevents us from a thorough discussion of their analysis. Satrapi’s work is ultimately left in the hands of clichés. I attempt to analyse Persepolis in such a way that it not only affirms rationality, fluidity, and duality, but also offers new and beneficial ways to argue Satrapi’s position and intention. My thesis is thus partly rooted in a feminist standpoint perspective to give voice to Satrapi’s agenda. What is more, it converses with similar restrictive regulations and contextualises them within an analysis of selected post-revolutionary autobiographical literature. My ultimate goal is to analyse the Iranian position towards Persepolis by making sense of the theological and political thought of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution, and the concept of velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurists) and the national and international responses to it in a way in which to take and transform the representation of Persepolis and Iranian culture consequently. This is done by explaining the current Iranian situation and Iranian responses to internal and external threats. Theological analyses and the explication of some of the historical complexities affecting modern Iran (especially after the revolution) would be beneficial along the way.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I wanted to design a lamp in collaboration with the lighting company Örsjö Belysning AB, that would contribute to stress-reduction and calmness both through visual and functional aspects. My focus in the study and the design process was on the lamps shape and light, where my primary inspiration was taken from the qualities of water. My lamp also had to fit into Örsjö Belysnings current assortment. My research showed that rounded shapes and adjustable light are two important factors for producing calmness and well-being for the user. The result of my work was a lamp with the name Harmoni. A LED floor lamp made of brass metal and acrylic plastic, with focus on rounded shapes, lightness, flexibility and symmetry. The lamp has a unique and adjustable light emission, that gives two different kinds of light from the same source. It functions both as a floor and a wall lamp in one.

Military operations other than war are increasing in frequency and, as one might surmise present unique challenges to the operational commander and the medical planner. Over time and by necessity the U.S. military has developed a logistical support system with unprecedented capability. This logistical system includes a medical system that is increasingly called upon to provide care to people outside the normal scope. Increased participation means Navy assets will be tasked to provide care to U.S. troops, U.N. troops, multinational troops, NGO personnel, and the civilians that precipitated the need for intervention in the first place. The current planning paradigm is rightfully focused on combat support. This thesis will investigate the necessity of breaking away from that paradigm when planning MOOTW.

Karacik, Burak. "Driver Management for Less-than-Truckload Carriers." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14465.

Full text
Abstract:
The trucking industry is vitally important to the economy, providing an essential service by transporting goods between businesses and consumers. The less-than-truckload (LTL) industry is an important segment, serving businesses that ship quantities between 150 lbs and 10,000 lbs. Large LTL carriers use thousands of drivers to move loads between terminals in their network, and each driver may be used for multiple dispatches between rest periods. Driver wages are a major component of transportation costs. Consequently, cost-effective driver management is of crucial importance for the profitability of LTL carriers. This thesis investigates a variety of issues related to driver management. In this thesis, we describe a dynamic driver scheduling scheme developed for a large U.S. LTL carrier. Dynamic driver scheduling is challenging because drivers must abide by a complex set of rules, including government and union regulations, and trucking moves are not pre-scheduled. The technology developed combines greedy search with enumeration of time-feasible driver duties, and is capable of generating cost-effective schedules covering 15,000 20,000 loads in minutes. One of the key tactical questions faced by an LTL carrier is how many drivers to locate at each terminal. Unionized carriers have bid drivers that can only move loads between their domicile and a designated region. The developed allocation technology determines the number of drivers to allocate to each terminal as well as the designated region for bid drivers. Computational experiments based on real-life dispatch data demonstrate the effectiveness of our domiciling methodology, and show that union rules may result in substantially larger driver fleets, in some cases up to 50% larger. Finally, we investigate a fundamental question related to driver management in order to obtain some fundamental insights: determining the minimum number of drivers required to cover a set of loaded moves. The problem is shown to be polynomially solvable without any restrictions on driver schedules. For variants with restrictions, several easily computable lower bounds are derived, integer programming formulations are presented, and fast heuristics are designed and analyzed. A computational study provides insights into the quality of the lower bounds and heuristic solutions.

Corthern, Christopher. "Faking Integrity Tests: More than a Mindset?" TopSCHOLAR®, 2002. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/648.

Full text
Abstract:
Personnel selection procedures often include integrity tests to aid in the attempt to hire the best possible candidates for a given job. Meta-analyses of integrity test validity coefficients have found evidence of incremental validity in the prediction of many performance criteria, but questions remain regarding the nature of the construct they actually measure. The classical interpretation of higher integrity scores being linked with higher job performance is that honest people are more productive. This study surveys another possibility: those that score highly on these measures may possess higher degrees of a problem solving ability related to intelligence that allows them to beat the test. The purpose of the following study was to determine whether a connection exists between the degree of success at faking a commercially available overt integrity test and the intelligence of the test taker. We administered an overt integrity test twice to a sample of college students with instructions to answer honestly on one administration and fake good on the other. Participants also completed measures of general and practical intelligence. Correlations between the difference of the honest and faked administrations of the integrity test and the measures of general and practical intelligence were computed in order to investigate the relationship between faking success and intelligence. Overall, a weak positive relationship between general intelligence and faking success was found, r = .17. An investigation of more specific integrity test characteristics revealed more about the nature of the overall relationship. Several limitations concerning the measure of faking success employed by this study are addressed.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the development of Yeats's image of Japan from his introduction to Japanese culture through 'Japonisme' in the mid-1880's, until the end of his life in 1939. It also surveys the sources of information that Yeats had on Japan other than the Noh drama, and shows how these sources were as important as the Noh, if not more, in defining his image of Japan as an artistic utopia. Three periods of Japanese history were of particular interest to Yeats: The early nineteenth century, in which most Japanese colour prints were produced; the Ashikaga period (1333-1573), when the Noh flourished, and Heian Japan (794-1100), an extraordinary culture which produced some of the world's greatest works of art. Images of Japanese culture from these periods combined to produce a composite, mythical vision of Japan in Yeats's imagination.

Abstract:
Every year, approximately 100 people die in fire related incidents in Sweden. ”Seek” is designed to assist fire fighters to locate people faster in smoke diving procedures. ”Seek” identifies people and possible dangers within the building before the smoke diving procedure begins. This allows the operation to be streamlined and planned, as well as avoiding risks which fire fighters are exposed to today. The early overview created by the ”Seek” smoke detector not only saves time in planning but reduces the time from accident until the people in the burning building can receive skilled care, increasing their chance of survival.

Abstract:
This study has presented in detail statistics and research related to the elderly and aging population and the many housing options that are currently available to this age demographic. The research has shown that Assisted Living Facilities are rapidly becoming the preferred method of Elder Care in the US, so much so that they have begun to offer nursing care which is typically offered only by nursing homes. Further exploration demonstrated that there is a lack of consistency in these facilities, and the evidence points to the need for a new model of Assisted Living that will focus more on the individual while still providing necessary care. This discovery has lead to the concept of creating an Assisted Living Development as the new model to be considered by future designers and Assisted Living planners. The creation of this model has helped to outline a new methodology for the planning and organization of Assisted Living.

Peydro, Duclos Ignacio. "EVENT CLOUDS : lighter than air architectural structures." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/91412.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2014.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 86-88).
EVENT CLOUD is a versatile covering system that allows events to happen independently to weather conditions. It consists of a lighter than air pneumatic structure, filled either with helium or hot air, that covers spaces by floating over them. Weightlessness permits EVENT CLOUD to theoretically cover an infinite surface, overcoming traditional large span structures proper weight limitation. EVENT CLOUD is a non-rigid aerodynamic balloon that can act as a fixed roof that does not overload the structure with weight. In this position events are protected from external weather conditions, converting any field into an interior climatically controlled space. If weather conditions are good the covering can be released from the anchoring system and let EVENT CLOUD float on the air. When EVENT CLOUD drifts in the air it becomes an urban reference, a visible object from around the city where the system is placed, and also a local clean energy source for the neighborhood. Creativity and design unite the functionality of a roof, the visual perception of an urban monument and the environmental action of locally producing energy to reduce carbon footprint of large events. EVENT CLOUD defeats gravity by enclosing within its boundaries a gas that weighs less than air to make the whole structure react to the medium it is placed in: air. This type of thinking implies the understanding that architecture creates objects that are inserted into a dynamical system within the fluid of space-time rather than isolated objects that only respond to compositional relations within themselves. Thus the design of EVENT CLOUD implies that architecture is a long-lived art discipline that has evolved from Beaux Arts compositional practices towards the post relativistic art of artificially manipulating the energetic and topological boundaries of events. Weightlessness provides the structure with a higher degree of versatility to allow EVENT CLOUD to nimbly respond to the requirements of each moment in space-time.
