Abstract:
Using Ethnography of Communication, Conversational Analysis, and surveys, Thai students' participation in group work was studied to determine how they interact with native English-speaking students. Issues discussed are: (1) behaviors Thai students display during group work; including comparisons and contrasts to native students' behaviors, (2) prejudices native students have about including Thai students in group work, (3) Thais' strengths and weaknesses in group work, and (4) perceptions native and Thai students and their professors have regarding group work and its importance to successful course completion. The study concludes by recommending ways that both Thai students and their professors can enhance the learning outcomes of courses that heavily emphasize group work.

Abstract:
Ethnic minorities in Hong Kong are usually ignored. However, their participation and contribution in the Hong Kong history are not negligible. There are a group of Thai settled in Kowloon City for decades. And because of their existence, Kowloon City is known as the “Little Thailand” in Hong Kong. By understanding this group of people through their history and development, one can recognize that they are very special to Hong Kong. With the removal of the Kai Tak International Airport, Kowloon City is now under re-development pressure. The Thai, which has been settling in the area since 1970s, may face the risk of losing their living places. It can be seen that some Thai stores and restaurants have already been closed or moved to other areas due to the increasing shop rents over these few years. It is crucial to record their significances in Kowloon City before this unique culture vanishes. Kowloon City is an area with a very characteristic historical background and setting. The area is famous of its dense streets forming a fish-bone shape, with Nga Tsin Wai Road as the main street which connects all other streets together. Kowloon City is a place for different styles of food. There are oven 200 restaurants which many of them are in Thai style. As a result, Kowloon City is also called “Little Thailand”. Thai is one of the ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong. The 2011 Hong Kong by-census report showed that about 14,000 Thais living in Hong Kong, making up around 2.9% of the total non-Chinese population, and about 0.2% of the total Hong Kong population. Most of them live on the Kowloon side, with the majority in Kowloon City and Kwun Tong1.Many Thais live and own restaurants and stores in Kowloon City. Due to the Kai Tak Airport nearby, the height of buildings in Kowloon City is limited. With the demolishment of Kai Tak Airport, the area is under re-development pressure. Developers start to purchase old buildings for high rise modern buildings and the rents of shops significantly increase over these years. The Thais who used to base around the area are under threat of moving to other areas, and the characteristic of “Little Thailand” may start to vanish. The objective of this dissertation is to understand the Thai community in Kowloon City, document their activities, identify their character-defining elements and values and study their potential challenges. The study area is focused on South Wall Road, which has a high density for Thai-related businesses and activities. This dissertation aims to study the tangible and intangible character-defining cultural heritage elements of the Thai community at Kowloon City. To achieve this research goal, it is essential to understand the place and the community’s origins, history and culture. However, given the limited time, it is not possible to carry out a comprehensive research of the Thai community in the entire Kowloon City. Instead, the research must limit its scope by focusing on a small but representative study area within Kowloon City. The purpose of this is more about demonstrating the research process through a smaller study area so as to set a “template” for future research that extends to other study areas at Kowloon City. This dissertation adopts the research methodology of cultural mapping for documenting the tangible and intangible assets of the area in order to better understand the place and its culture, and focuses on the area with more Thai-related activities in Kowloon City. South Wall Road, which is chosen as the study area, is one of the major streets for Thai activities including shops and restaurants, and festivals. By conducting field studies and interviews, the lives of the Thai and their unique cultures can be recorded and understood. --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------

Sonkaew, Thitichaya. "Thais' writing in English on Facebook : language choice and perceptions of multilingual writing." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2018. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/420374/.

Full text
Abstract:
Facebook provides immense space where not only is the environment multilingual but the users are also multilingual. This is linked to the latest way of thinking in ELF where multilingual users generate ‘English as a Multilingua Franca (Jenkins, 2015). Facebook users have not only increased the use of English but are also increasingly creative in their use of English. In public or semi-public spaces in Facebook walls, the posts might be read by multiple audiences with multiple linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This qualitative research focuses on 10 Thai multilingual Facebook users, who reside in Thailand, and other countries. The study aims at examining Thais’ writing on Facebook, revealing language choice and the influences behind the use of their choice and various perceptions of writing in English and other languages. A 3-month Facebook corpus and 2 rounds of interviews reveal that communication on Facebook is complex, fluid, context dependent and adaptable with different audiences. The participants tended to use all the choices from their full ranges of linguistic repertoires with blurred boundaries between languages. This is known as translanguaging, a more recent concept of code-switching and goes beyond code-switching. With affordances provided by Facebook, it has shaped communication in a more complex way than face to face. The affordances allow Facebook users to create their semi-public communication and play with multimodal features such as photos, videos, emoticons with or without written texts. A number of different scripts and the use of different languages with multimodality are commonly found. Diverse choice of languages includes switching between English, Thai and other languages. Separate sections of different languages and switching between languages and scripts in the same chunks are also common practice. Several participants have added Thai value by putting Thai particles in their English conversations, using numeral 555 referring to sound of laughing, and using Thai Romanisation known as karaoke language. Such choices are chosen with purposes including the target audience, convenience, communicative clarity, creativity, English competence, identity and technology issues. There were various perceptions of writing in English on Facebook. Writing in English was viewed as part of the everyday life of most Thai participants, although they presented different degrees of feeling comfortable or less comfortable writing in English with certain groups of Facebook Friends. Perceptions of Thais’ writing in English to other Thais were context dependent. This practice can be perceived as positive, neutral and negative, and the majority of participants did not show a preference for a particular version of mainstream English to be used on Facebook. Although many of them were aware of being watched by other Thais for their ability to write grammatical English on Facebook, they understood that the main purpose of writing in English was for successful communication. They considered themselves legitimate users of English on Facebook. The original contribution of this study is that there are few studies in relation to multilingual practice and multimodal practice on social network sites. This study can open up new research areas and add new knowledge about a linguistic phenomenon at a particular time. The study suggests accommodation strategies in online writing which can support the existing studies of accommodation strategies in ELF research in different settings and channels. The study will benefit researchers who would like to generate greater understanding of multilingual writing on Facebook. English has penetrated social network sites, not only as a lingua franca among speakers who have linguistic and cultural differences, but also among Thais who share their mother tongue. In terms of English language teaching, teachers can encourage their students to use Facebook to learn and practice writing in English, and make them aware that there are variations of English. To communicate successfully in writing, accommodation strategies should be prioritized, rather than an excessive focus on grammar. It appears that focusing on grammar can lead to social pressure when Thais are aware of their grammar being watched. This can impede the opportunity for them to use English for fear of losing face. As Facebook can be an additional channel to learn and practice English, Thais should change their attitude of watching the grammar used by other Thais’ Facebook Friends, and they should be encouraged to use English without feeling embarrassed.

Abstract: Wave action is an important structuring factor in rocky intertidal communities. It also has a great influence on animal foraging behaviour through an increase of mortality risks due mainly to dislodgement. Understanding differences in predator diet along a wave exposure gradient May explain variation in how predators affect prey distributions. In order to test if there are differences in feeding rates and prey species and size selection by Thais haemastoma (L. ) due to wave action, fortnightly field observations of its foraging behaviour were made (July/1990 August/1991). Two sites differing in wave exposure were chosen inside Forno inlet, Arraial do Cabo, RJ: an exposed (Fortaleza) and asheltered one ( Forno) . Laboratory experiments were also carried out to test prey choice and to obtain data from net energy return of each consumed prey species (calories/hour). The results showed that Thais basically feeds on Four species: the mussel Perna perna and the barnacles Tetraclita stalactifera, Megabalanus tintinnabulum and M. coccopoma. The greater densi ties of Thais observed at the exposed site (26 ind/m2) in coptrast to the sheltered one (4 ind/m2) were due to higher abundances of its sessile prey in the former site. The electi vi ty indices (E*) suggested that this gastropod selects mussels in an optimal fashion, i. e. , despi te their abundance. P.perna has not only the highest energy content but also is the most profitable prey. The choice of a smaller and less profitable mussel size « 25 mm) at Fortaleza than at Forno (25-50 mm) shows a deviation of optimal diet probably due to a greater wave exposure. Rates of consumption (0,10-0,26 prey / Thais/ day) are lower than those of other predators such as crabs and fishes but they may be high enough to control sessile prey densities, specially at the sheltered si te. This study indicates that wave action affects size selection but it does not influence on feeding rates or even on prey species choice by Thais haemastoma in Forno inlet.2

A state-of-the-art management information system which would allow a Type Command to efficiently control assigned assets by thorough integration of the many currently distinct mangement systems is critical in this era of rapid technological growth, data overabundance, and expanding naval commitments. A significant problem with the current development of such a system is its inherent large size and a requirement to use an unproven methodology, Information Engineering (IE). This thesis analyzes the modernization of the Type Commander Headquarters Automated Information System, THAIS, identifies problems related to the effort and discusses the use of IE on a major redesign project.

Abstract:
In this study, we analyzed elderly people in Thailand to identify the validity of suggested cutoff points of physical measures, handgrip strength, usual walking speed, and a composite score of both measures to predict functional limitations. Moreover, we examined whether these physical performance measures are accurate indicators of the investigated health outcomes. Methods: Using Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis, we investigated a sample of 8272 respondents aged 60 to 79 years. All data were based on the 2009 National Health Examination Survey (NHES IV) of Thailand. Results: For males aged 60 to 69 years, handgrip strength was used as an indicator of functional limitations. The cutoff point for disabilities in the activities of daily living (ADLs) was 29.5 kg, while in other limitations it ranged from 28.7 to 31.3 kg. In contrast, usual walking speed was able to indicate ADL disabilities at 0.7 m per second (m/s). As one might expect, the cutoff points for males aged 70 to 79 years were lower than for males in the 60 to 69 age group. For females, handgrip strength was able to indicate ADL disabilities at 16.5 kg for both the 60 to 69, and 70 to 79 age groups. Likewise, walking speed was indicative of ADL disabilities at 0.6 m/s for both age groups. Interestingly, the composite measure increases the ability to detect ADL disabilities in the younger group but not in the older group. The area under the curve (AUC) of cutoffs measuring the detection power of a diagnostic test was varied, ranging from 0.535 to 0.7386. Conclusions: The cutoff points of three measures varied according to sex and type of functional limitations. Our findings also showed that physical performance measures were useful for identifying people with an increased risk of functional limitations, particularly for ADL disabilities. However, although the AUC of the cutoffs of other functional limitations were relatively low, they should be considered with caution.

Abstract:
The evidence found through comparing and contrasting staging manuals strongly suggests that Massenet might have been involved in the staging of his operas. Several important differences, which include the implications of the use of a chair versus a bed in the final scene, are presented through a comparison of the final duet of Massenet's Opera Thaïs in a restaging from the livret de mise en scène F-Pbh T 8 (1) with the Metropolitan Opera's 2008 production. In addition, a probable date between the premiere in 1894 and the revision in 1898 for the livret de mise en scène F-Pbh T 8 (1) is deliberated. Three staging manuals for Thaïs are examined, which were found to contain the same information, and these findings are contrasted with four staging materials for Massenet's opera Manon and several other staging materials for works by various composers.

Multimodal analgesia is being increasingly used in veterinary medicine and in that context, tramadol has demonstrated effectiveness in controlling moderate to severe pain. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of three rates of tramadol at continuous infusion for trans and post- operative analgesia of dogs undergoing orthopedic surgeries. Further possible changes in cardiovascular and respiratory parameters, side effects as well as analgesia and plasma concentration of tramadol and M1 wee recorded. Thirty dogs were homogeneously distributed according to the surgical procedures and have been subjected to three groups: G1: 2.0 mg/kg/h; G2: 2.5 mg/kg/h; G3: 3 mg/kg/h. Pre-anaesthetic medication in all cases was given intramuscularly with acepromazine (0.04 mg/kg) and tramadol (2.0 mg/kg). Fifteen minutes later, anaesthesia was induced with intravenous propofol (3mg/kg) associated with midazolam (0.2 mg/kg) and maintained with isoflurane. Blood samples were obtained for assessment of serum cortisol and determining plasma concentrations of tramadol and M1. Postoperative analgesia was assessed through the scales University of Melbourne and interval level pain scale for assessment of acute pain in dogs Trans-operative analgesia was sufficient to most animals and the residual analgesia during post-operative period was short. Cardiovascular and respiratory stability were observed, with no adverse effects

Abstract:

Systemic functional linguistics as a framework for description -- An overview of the grammar of Thai -- Textual clause grammar: the system of THEME -- Interpersonal clause grammar: the system of MOOD -- Experiential grammar at clause rank: the system of TRANSITIVITY -- Thai narrative register: context, semantics and lexicogrammatical profiles -- Conclusions.
This research is a text-based study of the grammar of standard Thai, based on systemic functional linguistics. It is the first attempt to explore Thai in systemic functional terms, that is with the account of the grammar of Thai being interpreted as resource for making meaning that is part of language as a higher-order semiotic system. This account utilizes a corpus-based methodology and explores extensive evidence from natural narrative texts, specifically fourteen Thai folk tales. This systemic functional interpretation of Thai is also supported by an investigation of other text types (See Chapter 2). The research has both intermediate and long term implications. The description itself will be a resource for the Thai community and it will also contribute to the growing area of linguistic typology based on systemic descriptions. The long term implication of the research is that the description will be used as a model for text-based research into minority languages in Thailand. -- There are two introductory chapters to the study. The first chapter discusses some general issues concerned with systemic functional theory and data used in the development of the description of the grammar of Thai. The second chapter is a preview chapter which provides an overview of the grammar of Thai in terms of three strands of meaning: textual, interpersonal, and the experiential mode of ideational meanings. The systemic functional interpretation is based on an exploration of a number of texts with a wide generic spread (e.g. news reports, topographic texts, encyclopedia, and television interview). -- Chapter 3 to Chapter 7 constitute the main body of the thesis. Chapter 3 deals with the textual metafunction: it explores the THEME system as the enabling resource for the clause grammar for presenting interpersonal and experiential meanings as a flow of information in context. Chapter 4 is concerned with the interpersonal metafunction. It is focused on exploring the MOOD system, that is, the resource of clause grammar for enacting social roles and relationships in an exchange. Chapter 5 is concerned with the experiential mode of the ideational metafunction: it investigates the TRANSITIVITY system, which is the resource of the clause grammar for construing our experience of the world around and inside us. As this thesis is based mainly on narrative discourse, Chapter 6 profiles Thai narratives in terms of context, semantics, and lexicogrammar. Firstly, at the context stratum, the chapter describes the generic structure potential of Thai folk tales. Secondly, the chapter describes the realization of this generic structure by semantic properties. Finally, the chapter is concerned with quantitatively exploring the narratives on the basis of clause-rank systems, at the stratum of lexicogrammar, across the metafunctional spectrum midway up the cline of instantiation. In the final chapter, the study concludes by summarizing the preceding chapters, pointing out research implications and limitations, and suggesting some areas for further studies.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the ways in which Australia has been publicly represented in ten Asian societies in the twentieth century. It shows how these representations are at odds with Australian opinion leaders’ assertions about being a multicultural society, with their claims about engagement with Asia, and with their understanding of what is ‘typically’ Australian. It reviews the emergence and development of Asian regionalism in the twentieth century, and considers how Occidentalist strategies have come to be used to exclude and marginalise Australia. A historical survey outlines the origins of representations of Australia in each of the ten Asian countries, detecting the enduring influence both of past perceptions and of the interests of each country’s opinion leaders. Three test cases evaluate these findings in the light of events in the late twentieth century: the first considers the response in the region to the One Nation party, the second compares that with opinion leaders’ reaction to the crisis in East Timor; and the third presents a synthesis of recent Asian Australian fiction and what it reveals about Asian representations of Australia from inside Australian society. The thesis concludes that Australian policies and practices enable opinion leaders in the ten countries to construct representations of Australia in accordance with their own priorities and concerns, and in response to their agendas of Occidentalism, racism, and regionalism.

Abstract:
The culture is a key factor that profoundly changes our perception of the world. The cultural influences on the leadership aspects need to be taken into particular account in order to achieve an effective leadership. The main purpose of this thesis is to provide an overview of the relationship between the culture and the way in which leadership is perceived/exercised in Thailand. The case study is represented by the current situation in Thailand. The aim is to focus on Thai case in order to demonstrate that leadership styles cannot be imported and exercised in the same way across different cultures and countries. A leadership style may have different effects and meanings in relation to the cultural environment in which it is exercised. Understanding a culture is the essential step in order to consider the real effects of a leadership approach.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
This thesis offers both an examination of the depiction of Thailand in Australian novels, short stories and poems written in the 1980s and after, and an analysis of modern Thai novels and short stories that reflect similar themes to those covered in the Australian literature. One Australian film is also examined as the film provides an important framework for the analysis of some of the short stories and novels under consideration. The thesis establishes a dialogue between Thai and Australian literatures and demonstrates that the comparison of Australian representations of Thailand with Thai representations challenges constructively certain dominant political and social ideologies that enhance conservatism and the status quo in Thailand. The author acknowledges that the discussion of the representations of Thailand in contemporary Australian novels and short stories needs to take into account the colonial legacy and the discourse of Orientalism that tends to posit the ‘East’ as the ‘West’’s ‘Other’. Textual analysis is thus informed by post-colonial and cross-cultural theories, starting from Edward Said’s powerful and controversial critique of Western representation of the East in Orientalism. The first part of the thesis examines Australian crime stories and shows how certain Orientalist images and perceptions persist and help reinforce the image of the East and its people as the antithesis of the West. From Chapters Three through Six, however, more literary works by Australian authors are examined. The important finding is that most of the Australian authors under consideration attempt, though not always successfully, to resist and challenge the Eurocentric stereotypes of Asia and Asians that dominated Australian literature in earlier periods. This difference between contemporary Australian authors and their predecessors seems to reflect modern Australia’s endeavor to distinguish itself from the rest of the Western world and to redefine its relationship with Asia. As literary representations cannot be separated from socio-political contexts, the thesis also includes discussion of the Thai social and political history and, where appropriate, shows how colonialism and neo-colonialism exert their impact on modern Thailand.

Maneewat, Khomapak. "Nursing Care Practices and Workplace Relations in a Thai Surgical Ward: An Exploration of Clinical Decision-Making." Thesis, Griffith University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367549.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a study of how a local ward culture underpins nursing actions of Thai surgical nurses in order to account for issues such as lack of sustainability, and failure to use research, including evidence-based nursing practice and the new multimodal model of care which has been officially adopted in the Thai hospital context. The study was conducted at a Thai surgical ward to illuminate and describe the culture of the Thai surgical nurse, including the ways in which the organizational culture influences or guides their thinking, decision-making, and actions in a patterned way. The knowledge about how the Thai surgical nurses allocate care, and make clinical decisions in the surgical ward in the context of social relations and staff culture is constructed through an ethnographic approach based on fieldwork at the non-private general surgical wards of one university hospital in Southern Thailand. A better understanding of the diversity of Thai surgical nursing practice is then enacted from a typical day in the life of the Thai surgical nurses, which consists of the realities, ritualised practices, relations, and integration both with within their group and with others. The study results represent the way that nursing organizational culture informs the practices, decision-making, and the predictions of the nurses’ possible response to change. The pre- and post-operative cares allocated by the nurses of the TSW are routinised, almost ritualised, and reflect fixed assumptions about the way cares ought to be delivered, including those reflecting the lack of commitment to implementing new multimodal models of care as well as research utilization and evidence-based practice. The study raises significant concerns about the status of professional nursing in Thailand in terms of professional autonomy and the status of the nurses within the Thai hospital context. Empowering professional nursing is therefore recommended as a first priority to change Thai nursing culture. The ritualised practices, task-oriented working system, and the dominance of the medical model in the Thai nursing culture further reflect the need to establish an evidence-based nursing culture to create professional identity and improve the quality of care.

Dittemore, Carl Fenn. "This man Murdock." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5526.

Full text
Abstract:
Marshall Mortimer Murdock was one of the most compelling and controversial figures in all of Kansas history. Best known perhaps for establishing the Wichita Eagle in 1872, a newspaper whose primary business it was—as it was in fact for so many newspapers of its time—to ‘boost’ the city which carried its name, Murdock was in fact a newspaper man, a booster, first and foremost. Marshall Murdock, however, was more than just a “master town-builder,” as his friend and colleague, David Leahy, once remarked. Murdock was both essential to and responsible for Wichita’s early successes, and by extension, its near demise and consequent rebuilding in the boom to bust days of the 1880s. Marshall Murdock’s high profile, high powered, and highly charged editorial style was but a microcosm of the man himself. In a life, which embraced his role as Soldier, Statesman, Politician, Printer, Murdock was an archetype of the Gilded Age; he remained unabashedly conservative in politics and principle and sought to encourage always and compel as necessary others in his orbit to champion this same world view. Murdock was to the end of his days a true believer in both the Wichita he knew and the Wichita he envisioned. This was Murdock.
