Abstract:
The origin and evolution of granites remain a matter of debate and several approaches have been made to distinguish between different granite types. Overall, granite classification schemes based on element concentrations and ratios, tectonic settings or the source rocks (I-, A-, S-type) are widely used, but so far, no systematic large-scale study on Th/U ratio variations in granites based on their source or tectonic setting has been carried out, even though these elements show very similar behavior during melting and subsequent processes. We therefore present a compiled study, demonstrating an easy approach to differentiate between S-, A- and I-type granites using Th and U concentrations and ratios measured with a portable gamma ray spectrometer. Th and U concentrations from 472 measurements in S- and I-type granites from the Variscan West-Bohemian Massif, Germany, and 78 measurements from Neoproterozoic A-type Malani granites, India, are evaluated. Our compendium shows significant differences in the average Th/U ratios of A-, I- and S-type granites and thus gives information about the source rock and can be used as an easy classification scheme. Considering all data from the studied A-, I- and S-type granites, Th/U ratios increase with rising Th concentrations. A-type granites have the highest Th/U ratios and high Th concentrations, followed by I-type granites. Th/U ratios in S- to I-type granites are lower than in A-type and I-type granites, but higher than in S-type granites. The variation of Th/U ratios in all three types of granite cannot be explained by fractional crystallization of monazite, zircon and other Th and U bearing minerals alone, but are mainly due to source heterogeneities and uranium mobilization processes.

Abstract:
The present numerical investigation deals with steady natural convection flow in a closed square cavity when the bottom wall is sinusoidal heated and vertical walls are linearly heated, whereas the top wall is well insulated. In the nonuniformly heated bottom wall maximum temperature TH attains at the center of the bottom wall. The sidewalls are linearly heated, maintained at minimum temperature Tc at top edges of the sidewalls and at temperature Th at the bottom edges of the sidewalls, i.e., Tc≤Th≤TH. Nonlinear coupled PDEs governing the flow have been solved by the penalty finite element method with biquadratic rectangular elements. Numerical results are obtained for various values of Prandtl number (Pr)(0.01≤Pr≤10) and temperature difference aspect ratio A=[(Th−Tc)∕(TH−Tc)](0≤A≤1) for higher Raleigh number Ra=105. Results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherm contours, local Nusselt number, and the average Nusselt number as a function of temperature difference aspect ratio A. The overall heat transfer process is shown to be tuned efficiently with suitable selection of A.

Wang, Zhaozhi. "Predicting toxic gas concentrations resulting from enclosure fires using the local equivalence ratio concept linked to fire field models." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2007. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/6338/.

Full text
Abstract:
The central idea behind the newly developed toxicity model is the use of the Local Equivalence Ratio (LER). The species yields as functions of the Global Equivalence Ratio (GER) and temperature are input parameters of this model. Correlations for most building materials are available from small-scale fire experiments. Similar approaches to this method are also developed using the CO/CO2 and H2/H2O mole ratios. The LER methodology is further refined by an approach which divides the computational domain for the calculation of toxic gases into two parts, a control region in which the toxic gases are dependent on the LER and temperature, and a transport region in which the toxic gas concentrations are dependent on the mixing of hot gases with fresh air. The toxicity model is then extended to two-fuel cases. In the two-fuel model, the LER is a function of the two mixture fractions, which are used to represent the mixture of the two different fuels, oxygen and combustion products. This model is useful in simulating residential fires, in which wood lining of sidewalls or ceilings is the second fuel. Finally, the transportation of HCI within fire compartments is considered. A mathematical model is developed to simulate the exchange of HCI between gas boundary and wall surfaces and the reaction of HCI with walls. All the toxicity models developed in this study can be integrated into the practical volumetric heat source approach and the Eddy Break-up (EBU) combustion model typically used in practical engineering analysis.

Abstract:
Río Tinto provides ideal conditions for studying the role of colloidal particles in concentrating elements and their influence on the transport of them to Ría de Huelva estuary(Spain).Ultrafiltration experiments were developed on the Río Tinto waters,in order to separate colloids by different sizes(50,10,5 and 3kDa).Samples from 50kDa and 3kDa ultrafiltration were analysed to find concentration using ICP-MS,and radionuclides activities have been determined for each of them.An ultrafiltration permeation model describes the relation between log of concentration of the element in the permeate solution and log of CF.If the permeation is constant, the linear pattern resulting can be used to predict the ultrafiltration behaviour of U and Th in this peculiar waters.Experiments were carried out using CF from 1,07 to 1,73.The behaviour of U can be predicted by a permeation model that provides a Pc of 0,813 for U(50kDa) and Pc=0,626 for U(3kDa).The permeation model can just show little retention for U,and that the permeation behaviour of U can be considered the same even at low CF.The application of the permeation model on Th(50kDa) samples failed, the membrane was not retaining quantitatively.A Pc=0,360 for Th(3kDa) was derived.Anyway, this could be due to artefactual retentions.Using low CF,colloidal concentration cannot be estimated by the permeation model for both U and Th.Concentration of U amounts to 4,73-6,54 μg/L,the range for Th is 13,0-28,0 μg/L.Both the elements are in higher concentrations respect to common natural waters, according to their predict character in acidic conditions,in which both can stay in dissolved form, and even colloids will be disintegrated. 234U/238U AR range is 1,761-2,060.The disequilibrium among 234U and 238U isotopes is attributable to the excess of 234U related both to the recoil effect, and the preferential leaching of 234U.230Th activity range is 0,056-0,169 mBq/L;its presence in solution is related to the decay of 234U.

zkaya, Cenan M.S., Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gü

zcebe Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Ugur Ersoy July 2005, 135 pages The minimum spiral ratio equation given in the codes is derived by equating the strength at the second peak to the strength at the first peak for spiral columns tested under uniaxial load. In this study, specimen behavior under combined bending and axial load was taken as basis while deriving proposed equations. Analyses were carried out by using a Moment-Curvature program. For normal strength concrete, one regression and one simplified equation giving minimum spiral ratio are proposed. Difference between two equations arises from the number in front of (Ac/Ack). In regression equation, this number is calculated by means of a function. In simplified equation, this number is a constant. For high strength concrete, a different regression equation is proposed which is valid for concrete strengths up to 95 MPa. Simplified equation proposed for normal strength concrete is also proposed for high strength concrete up to concrete strengths of 120 MPa. It was found that
(i) Simplified equation proposed for normal and high strength concrete yielded consistent results in the range of variables studied
(ii) Except some points, regression equations yielded consistent results
(iii) It is recommended to use simplified equation instead of regression and code equations since it yields more consistent results than code and regression equations. Keywords: Confined Concrete, Ductility, Moment-Curvature, Minimum Spiral Volumetric Ratio

Abstract:
This work investigates the behaviour of Ra within a forest ecosystem (Montiers, Meuse). It is based on the quantification of several isotopic tracers (U- and Th- series disequilibria, isotopic ratios of 228Ra/226Ra and 87Sr/86Sr) in the different compartments of the water-soil-plant system. The research goals were : 1) to study the mobility of Ra and its radioactive ascendants in the separated mineral fractions of a soil profile, 2) to evaluate the transfer of Ra to the water-plant system, 3) to characterise the transfer of Ra and its residence time onto the vegetation, 4) to realise an account of the biogeochemical cycle of Ra. This work shows a strong redistribution of U, Th and Ra depending on their respective affinities with the different mineral fractions of the soil. Despite being predominantly concentrated in the clay fraction (<2 µm) of the soil, our findings indicate that trees (beeches) mostly extract Ra from the soil’s iron oxides. The subsequent transfer of this nuclide from the roots to the foliage is lesser than that of other alkaline-earth metals, leading to a vegetal residence time on the order of a few years (2.6 ± 1.6 years). Finally, the biogeochemical cycle of Ra is characterised by the degradation flux of fine-roots rather than that of leaves, by a negligible atmospheric input and by a strong weathering rate. Ra presents in the latter originates almost uniquely from litter degradation and does not pass through gravitational soil solutions

Abstract:

Mineral exploration in Australia today faces a great challenge: to efficiently detect mineralisation buried beneath extensive regolith cover. Because their roots penetrate the regolith cover, establishing the elemental signatures of certain plants (biogeochemical exploration) can aid in the detection of buried ore deposits. At the highly prospective Mount Painter Inlier, Eucalyptus camaldulensis (river red gum) was sampled in the ranges and extending out onto the plains bordering Lake Frome. Here it is shown that the leaves from Eucalyptus trees can detect a range of elements including important pathfinder elements related to U mineralisation. A significant finding of this study is that the sediments thought to be associated with the geochemical transport and host of U mineralisation, like those that host the Four Mile U deposit, have relatively elevated U2/Th values. The geological setting of these locally elevated U results also appears to be equivalent to the Four Mile mineralisation, based on available field exposures. Therefore, this area could well represent a biogeochemical expression of mineralisation equivalent to the soon to be mined Four Mile U deposit. This study demonstrated that Eucalyptus biogeochemistry has significant advantages over other approaches in that it is cost and time efficient, culturally unobtrusive, and can identify relationships between plant biogeochemistry and the underlying geological substrate, in particular, U-mineralisation. The examination of more Eucalyptus camaldulensis (and more widespread species in the area) from surrounding areas therefore also warrants further investigation.

In this thesis, a multiple pulse transmission for hybrid TH/DS impulse radio UWB systems is studied. Using Binary Phase Shift Keying(BPSK) modulation and Bi-orthogonal Pulse Position Modulation(BPPM), and an accurate performance analysis of proposed system using BPSK modulation is provided. For proposed system using BPPM modulation make a simulation to understand the parameter change impact on system performance. The advantage of the proposed system is to increase the transmission rate and the system capacity, and also improve the system performance in terms of using TH/DS multiple access technology. Proposed system using BPSK modulation, so the original can only transmit one bit of BPSK modulation, into Q bits can be send to increase the transmission rate simultaneously. Based on the characteristic function analytical method, we derive the probability distribution of multiple access interference and the system average symbol error rate. Many of the above pulse transmission system using BPSK modulation combined with pulse position modulation (PPM), which form a multiple pulse transmission of the N-ary Biorthogonal Pulse Position modulation (BPPM), to increase the modulation level (N).The simulations used to verify the analytical results are carried out in AWGN and actual UWB fading channel. In order to numerical analysis and simulation results can be a fair comparison , we will be one of the parameters Tp fixed 0.7ns (reciprocal of bandwidth can be approximated) ,namely, the bandwidth is fixed, and fixed data transmission rate (Tb / Tp) is 32. From the numerical analysis and simulation results, we can conclude when other system parameters are fixed that the performance of system is improved by increasing the number of frames. As the number of users increase, the system performance degrades more. The theoretical analysis of the proposed system can be verified from the simulation results. Consider the parameters in proposed system using BPSK and BPPM modulation, which fixed (Tb / Tp ) is 32, the more pulse transmit simultaneously the more improve in the performance obviously. In the proposed system using BPPM modulation, the system performance can be improve as the number of the pulse position is increased.

Abstract:
According to World Malaria Report 2020, the rate of decline in malaria case incidence and deaths caused by malaria has ceased in latter half of the past decade. Though Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) is still the major therapeutic approach globally to treat malaria patients, increased resistance of Plasmodium sp. to artemisinin can be looked upon as a major factor responsible for the rate of decline. In the present world, immunotherapeutic approaches are in the limelight to treat several infections, autoimmune disorders, cancers but application of such therapeutic measures in case of malaria are yet not available. Among different immune cells, T-regulatory cells (T-reg) and Th-17 cells and the balance between them, helps in determining the outcome of the immune response in host during both lethal and non-lethal malaria. TGFβ and IL-6 are two major cytokines that play important role in fine tuning the Treg/Th-17 balance by modulating dendritic cell responses, specially by regulating the ratio between myeloid DC and plasmacytoid DC (mDC/pDC). Studies in rodent malaria models have revealed that neutralization of IL-6 by using anti IL-6 monoclonal antibodies in-vivo has been found effective in declining the parasitemia, malaria induced deaths and also in reverting back the altered T-reg/Th-17 balance to normal levels. Apart from these, autophagy is one of the major factors which also contributes to regulate the T-reg/Th-17 balance. In malaria infected mice, autophagy induction has been found to normalise the dysregulated T-reg/Th-17 ratio and promote anti-inflammatory Th-2 pathway by supressing pro-inflammatory Th-1 pathway. So, Treg/Th-17 balance and its associated regulators can be important immunotherapeutic targets for malaria prevention in near future.

Abstract:
The author of the article raises the question of the genetic relationship of the Russian novel of the second half of the 19th century with the epic, notes that it is precisely on the scale of the epic worldview that the global goal was set for themselves by Russian writers, when arguing about the need for universal coverage and understanding of life, of the insight of Divine laws. The article proves that one of the features of the epic novel included the turn to the popular worldview, but at the same time Russian writers were able to create an artistic world in which the importance of the personality is not diminished. The epic novel “War and Peace” opened up the opportunity for many of Leo Tolstoy’s contemporaries to create an epic novel based on the material of new and recent Russian history and contemporary life. The author analyses the features present in “War and Peace” and Leo Tolstoy’s epic novels “Anna Karenina” and “Resurrection” — the ratio of the personal and the common, the special integrity and totality of the artistic world, the objectivity of the narrative, the wide scope of events, the precedent picture of the world, etc. All the deeds of the heroes in the epic novel are evaluated not only from the position of a specific time, but from the position of eternity, from the point of view of religious consciousness.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 looks at the development of algorithms for estimating the value of Pi and analysing waveforms. Early estimates for Pi – the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter – were produced in Babylonia. The ancient Greek mathematian, Archimedes, produced improved estimates by means of a clever algorithm which used polygons to approximate the dimensions of a circle. Later, the Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi and his son used a similar method to produce an estimate that would stand as the most accurate for 900 years. With the decline of ancient Greece, Persia took on the mantel of leadership in mathematics from the 8th to 11th centuries. Al-Khawrzmi’s texts ultimately propagated knowledge of algorithms to the West. In 18th century France, Joseph Fourier proposed that waveforms could be decomposed into their constituent simple harmonics. The resulting algorithm became the key to signal analysis in today’s electronic communication systems.

Abstract:
Business failure usually offers an opportunity to critique the adoption or not of innovation, the adaptation or not to changing markets and consumer preferences, the ratio of loan to equity capital, the quality of management decisions and so on. However the light shone by the UK lockdown which required all non-essential businesses to close by March 26th 2020 and its staggered reopening by mid-June illuminated the practices of an apparently successful business. This chapter focuses on Boohoo, a publicly listed company on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM); and the rise of fast fashion and the credibility of Environmental, Social and Governance investing. It exposes the fault line that separates workplace conditions and environmental degradation from monetary return on investment. The chapter ends by offering some thoughts on the behavior of those who enable industries such as fast fashion to take hold and thrive - consumers and investors. It suggests what a post-COVID future for corporate accountability might look like.

This chapter is devoted to the wartime radio broadcasts and films of Leslie Howard, which include Pimpernel Smith (1940) and 49th Parallel (1941). Howard worked with the Ministry of Information and independently for two political purposes: to help build British popular support for the war and to encourage Americans to join Britain in defeating Nazi conquest and persecution. He became both a critical and popular voice advocating for Britain, its people and Hitler's targeted victims, rebutting negative connotations of propaganda. His personal voice and anecdotes on radio, combinations of satire, thriller and romance in Pimpernel Smith, and epic thriller in 49th Parallel were designed to forge a mutually sympathetic transatlantic community emanating from his very successful years in America as a Hollywood star.

Abstract:
Jack Benny was the most successful of radio’s comedians. In 23 years of weekly broadcasts, Benny indelibly shaped American humor through this powerful mass medium, and became one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century. The ultimate master of comic timing, Jack Benny was also a canny entrepreneur, becoming one of the pioneering “showrunner” producer/writer/performers. His modern style of radio humor (informal monologues and easy repartee with comic assistants like the famed Rochester character played by Eddie Anderson and wife Mary Livingstone) created the situation comedy. In this career study, we learn how Jack Benny found ingenious ways to sell his sponsors products in commercials listeners loved, and how he dealt with challenges of race relations, gender ideals, creating comedy and thriving in rapidly changing American media.

By February of 1939, Motion Picture Pictures and Distributors Association (MPPDA) President Will Hays argued that movies needed more realism connecting to the types of problems that face average Americans. With growing anti-Nazi sentiment in Hollywood, the release of Confessions of a Nazi Spy on May 6th would become a watershed moment for an industry largely cautious of how they should approach the growing unrest in Europe. At the same time, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, discontinued the shipment of official Nazi war films to the United States. Producer Walter Wanger and radio journalist Jimmie Fidler took to blows in the press. Wanger claimed the Hollywood press was a joke while Fidler defending his work. In February 1940, MPPDA president Will Hays sent out a report commending the cultural importance of movies during the 1930s as “exposing the tragedy of war.”

Full text
Abstract:
The potential of thorium fertile fuel has been evaluated for a graphite-moderated MHR (Modular Helium Reactor) from the perspective of a self-sustainable U233-Th fuel cycle in the MHR. The 3-D core analyses have been performed with the thermal-hydraulic-coupled computer code systems (HELIOS-MASTER). The feasibility of a self-sustainable U233-Th fuel cycle in MHR was evaluated for a simplified equilibrium fuel cycle. A mixed oxide fuel (ThO2-UO2) was used. Whole-core analysis was performed with the MASTER code for various core configurations. In the core analysis, a 3-batch radial fuel shuffling scheme was adopted to find an equilibrium fuel cycle. Three types of fuel blocks were considered: a homogeneous fuel arrangement and two seed-blanket arrangements. It was found that a near self-sustainable U233-Th fuel cycle (conversion ratio = 0.95∼0.97) is feasible for the MHRs with the appropriate U-233 and Th-232 loadings. To achieve a high conversion ratio while maintaining a long cycle length, it is essential to maximize the thorium loading (∼30 tons) and at the same time soften the neutron spectrum to achieve sufficient reactivity. In order to achieve conversion ratios over 0.95 and an 18-month cycle length, the moderator volume needs to be increased with respect to the regular MHR design. Also, removing the inner graphite reflectors increases noticeably the core performance in terms of the conversion ratio and cycle length. A special seed-blanket block configuration (ISB, with seed and blanket fuels in the inner and outer regions of a block, respectively) provides a superior conversion ratio with respect to a homogeneously fueled block, whereas reversing the placement of seed and blanket in the ISB block configuration (with seed fuels in the outer zone) results in a worse performance. In the case of the U233-Th fuel cycle, the fissile (U233+U235) fraction in the discharged fuel is almost 90%. Denaturing of the uranium vector in the self-sustainable U233-Th fuel was investigated by adding 10% LEU in the fuel, to make the initial fissile fraction ∼20.5%. Neutronic analysis of the operation with denatured fuel reveals that the conversion ratio is substantially reduced and the available cycle length is much shorter.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Stratigraphic correlation is crucial for reservoir characterization; therefore, it requires more advanced methods and techniques to reduce the stratigraphic correlation uncertainty, especially when variation in lateral facies is high. The studied formations from bottom to top consist of fluvial to marginal marine X Formation, shallow marine Y Formation, and fluvial distributary channels to estuarine Z Formation. Spectral gamma-ray logs give additional consistent information on lithological composition that can support identification of boundary between formations within the stratigraphic framework. Wells with a full section of Y Formation, core, palynology, and spectral gamma-ray were selected as key wells. The top and base of the Y Formation were picked using conventional logs refined by a thorium/potassium (Th/K) ratio log and cross plot with core and palynology data as validations. The internal Y Formation markers were also picked with the aid of the Th/K cross plots. The top picking criteria from the key wells was implemented to the rest of the wells across the field with consistency. The uniform low Th/K ratio log (<3.5) across the Y Formation indicates illite as the dominant clay type, confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) data with an average of more than 80%. The character is consistent with the interpreted depositional environment. This character makes the Y Formation stand out from the overlying Z and the underlying X formations. The change from X to Y Formation is defined by the decrease of the Th/K ratio log, from high kaolinite content to illite dominated environment. Inversely, the top of the Y Formation (base of Z) is indicated by the increase of the Th/K ratio log moving from shallow marine Y Formation to the fluvial-influenced Z Formation. The Th/K cross plot indicates different clusters amongst the studied formations and the internal Y zonation. The X Formation is located in the high Th and low K area where kaolinite is predominant, related to fluvial environment. The case is similar for the Z Formation but with more influence of mixed-clay type. The Y Formation shows clear clustering along the mixed-clay and illite window. Internal Y zonation displays, from bottom to top, an increasing K value within the clusters. This method provides a semi-quantitative interpretation to define the studied formations boundaries and the Y Formation internal zonation. This study has increased the consistency of the studied formations’ stratigraphic and structural framework. This consistency has, in turn, fine-tuned the structural framework and aided field development through better geosteering and lateral well placements. These results are a valuable starting point to refine and extend the work to other areas.

Abstract:
Flying Ad-hoc Network (FANET)'s model operates according to routing protocols along with basic technical routing parameters. One of the FANET's significant challenges is ensuring the resilience of the UAVs' performance by adjusting the operational plan and network routing based on the constraints of operation goals and the limitations of resources. Subsequently, this paper proposes an agent-based Adaptive Zone Routing Protocol (AZRP) that enables the FANET to perform disaster relief missions efficiently. The AZRP operates in economic mode, search mode, or rescue mode according to the operational plan conditions, limitations of resources, and human survival factor. The AZRP is compared with the standard ZRP and AODV to determine the most suitable routing protocol in performing disaster relief missions. The search and rescue simulation is implemented by using the NS2 simulator. The testing and evaluation criteria consider Throughput (TH), Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), Packet Loss Ratios (PLR), and End-to-End Delay (E2E Delay). The obtained results indicate that the FANET model is able to perform in the three modes effectively and optimizes the search and rescue operations according to the given disaster relief simulation context and constraints. The AZRP outperforms the other two protocols and is able to achieve higher TH, higher PDR, lower PLR, and lower E2E delay.

Full text
Abstract:
The ROXf is a kind of inert matrix fuel U-238-free matrices, it has a high plutonium transmutation capability. The ROXf consists of chemically stable phases of fluorite ‘stabilized’ ZrO2 or ThO2, and spinel MgAl2O4. In this fuel, PuO2 is solidified in a fluorite phase. With U-238-Free matrices, a large part of the plutonium can be burned after irradiation in conventional LWRs. The spent ROXf consists of natural analogous geologically stable phases, and is disposed directly as high level wastes ‘HLWs’ after about 50 years cooling. From the high plutonium burn up rate and the high stability of the fuel, the ROXf-LWRs system has proliferation resistance and environmental safety. Characteristics of two types of ROXf, Zr-ROX and Th –ROX with weapons-Pu, in an LWR core arrangement are evaluated by cell burn up calculations and 2-D core calculations using the SRAC code system and JENDL-3 nuclear library. In an LWR of moderator to fuel volume ratio = 1.9, which corresponds to current PWRs, Pu transmutation rates with the two types of ROXf are large enough and more than 80% and 99% of Pu and Pu-239, respectively, can be burned. The calculated kinetic parameters indicate less moderate characteristics of ROX cores, especially with Zr-ROX. The fertile Th-232 in Th-ROX works like U-238 in the UO2 fuel, making kinetic parameters more moderate and reactivity drop due to burn up smaller than that Zr-ROX. The neutron capture of Th-232 to generate U-233, causes the safeguards problem. Thus, the characteristics of Zr-ROX as a typical example, were investigated in this study.

Abstract:
Fatigue cracking of the rotor shaft is an important fault observed in rotating machinery of key industry, which can lead to catastrophic failure. Nonlinear dynamics of a cracked rotor system with fractional order damping is investigated by using a response-dependent breathing crack model. The four-th order Runge-Kutta method and ten-th order CFE-Euler (Continued Fraction Expansion-Euler) method are introduced to simulate the proposed system equation of fractional order cracked rotors. The effects of derivative order of damping, rotating speed ratio, crack depth, orientation angle of imbalance relative to the crack direction and mass eccentricity on the system dynamics are demonstrated by using bifurcation diagram, Poincare map and rotor trajectory diagram. The results show that the rotor system displays chaotic, quasi-periodic and periodic motions as the fractional order increases. It is also found that the imbalance eccentricity level, crack depth, rotational speed, fractional damping and crack angle all have considerable influence on the nonlinear behavior of the cracked rotor system.

Abstract:
Abstract The present study investigates the Anambra Basin shales to determine the provenance and maturity of the sediments using standard geochemical techniques. Twelve (12) representative samples recovered from shale sequences of The Mamu Formation and Nkporo Group of The Anambra Basin were studied to determine the sediment provenance, paleoenvironment, diagenetic conditions, maturity as well as the tectonic setting. To consider in detail and establish the inherent constituents of the Major minerals, Trace and Rare Earth elements, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses techniques was employed. The detrital minerals determined are Al2O3 (18.27% and 21.16%), TiO2 (1.73% and 1.63%) and Fe2O3 (2.78% \ and 2.85%), for Nkporo Group and Mamu Formation respectively. The enrichment of SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 (1.14, 1.94, 3.67 respectively) supported by Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of 93.54 & 39.55 and Rb/Sr ratio of 0.57 & 0.40, indicate that the Anambra Basin sediments are matured. TiO2/AL2O3 binary plots, Th/Co Vs La/Sc crossplots, Th-Sc-Zr triplots and Cr, Ni concentration suggest mixed provenance of felsic to mafic source rocks for these sediments. From the log (K2O/Na2O) Vs SiO2 crossplots, a passive margin tectonic setting was determined for these sediments.

The presence of the antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was investigated in 487 serum samples withdrawn from 216 haemophiliacs (186 haemophiliacs A and 30 B) who came to the Pisa Centre between 1977 and 1986. Results show that a considerable proportion of haemophiliacs (15%) were already positive in 1982. In haemophiliacs A, who were treated up to 1983 with concentrates made from US plasma, but from 1984 on began to use concentrates made from Italian plasma, this proportion in 1986 was 16%. In haemophiliacs B who have continued using concentrates from US plasma, the prevalcence rate of Anti-HIV was found to be much higher (63%). As regards the contact with the virusof hepatitis B (HBV), antibodies werefound in 64% of haemophiliacs and theviral antigens in 6%. 137 of these haemophiliacs (112 A and 25 B) were examined between 1985 and 1986 for indexof hepatic cytoli-sis, immunological and clinical status. In 65% of haemophiliacs the level of serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) was mildly increased, perhaps for the presenceof chronic hepatitis. In Anti-HIV negative subjects we found a decrease of T helper/T suppressor (Th/Ts) ratio, with a mean of 1.3 (in controls, 1.7),due especially to an increase of Ts (mean 0.8 × 103Vcu.mm.; incontrols, mean 0.6). Also in Anti-HIVpositive haemophiliacs there was a decrease ofTh/Ts ratio (mean 1.1), but this was mainly due to a decrease of Th (mean 0.7 × 103/cu.mm.;in controls, mean 1.1). Clinical evaluation of the Anti-HIVpositive subjectsshowed 2 patients with AIDS related illness with opportunistic infections and 13 haemophiliacs (33% of seropositive subjects) withone or more of these abnormalities: thrombocytopenia, lymphoadenopathy, slight persistentfever, diarrhea.
