Abstract:
The academic world, at least in the West, has traditionally always been suspicious when it comes to introducing in its quest for knowledge notions of materiality, touch, texture, or “haptics” – in other words what is generally associated with sensory-experience. In the human sciences and the artistic fields the practice of research has always privileged “textual reason” over “sensory texture,” the textual over the textural. Only in the recent past have so-called postmodern theories of all kinds attempted to overcome the hierarchical dichotomy between discursive reason and embodied thought. Unfortunately, this has very often created an unprecedented ragbag of epistemological confusions and identity crises. This essay shall attempt to explain and clarify the epistemological nature of materiality, touch, texture, or “haptics,” and the role it can play in academic research in the artistic fields with particular reference to ideas developed by French philosophers Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas.

Abstract:
A major problem of texture analysis is that textures in the real world are often not uniform due to variations in orientation, scale, or other visual appearance. In this paper, affine texture analysis with texel scale-area histogram is presented. A textural image is decomposed into a set of scale images and each scale image consists of square texels of the same size. The scale-area histogram of texel is used as texture feature for multi-scale texture analysis and dominant texture scale analysis. Measurement of the dominant texel sizes of textural images with different rotation angles and spatial scales indicates that rotational and scaled transformations of textural image result in the motion of translation in scale-area histogram.

Abstract:
Currently, screen content images (SCIs) are widely used in our modern society. However, since SCIs have distinctly different properties compared to natural images, traditional quality assessment methods of natural images cannot precisely evaluate the quality of SCIs. Thus, we propose a blind quality evaluation method for SCIs based on regionalized structural features that are closely relevant to the intrinsic quality of SCIs. Firstly, the features of textual and pictorial regions of SCIs are extracted separately. For textual regions, since they contain noticeable structural information, we propose improved histograms of oriented gradients extracted from multi-order derivatives as structural features. For pictorial regions, since human vision is sensitive to texture information and luminance variation, we adopt texture as the structural feature; meanwhile, luminance is used as the auxiliary feature. The local derivative pattern and the shearlet local binary pattern are used to extract texture in the spatial and shearlet domains, respectively. Secondly, to derive the quality of textual and pictorial regions, two mapping functions are respectively trained from their features to subjective values. Finally, an activity weighting strategy is proposed to combine the quality of textual and pictorial regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

Palavras-chave: calagem; fração textural; CaCO3; correção do solo. METHOD OF INCUBATION WITH LIMESTONE IN THE CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS WITH DIFFERENT TEXTURES ABSTRACT: Liming interferes on the availability of nutrients, because it reconditions the soil. This change may or may not be favorable, depending on the culture to be implanted and the soil to be corrected. For this, a experiment was realized with the objective of to evaluate the effects of limestone, that the quantity was calculated using the method of incubation with CaCO3, in the chemical characteristics of two soils, one with medium texture and the other with a clayey texture. First, the soil was incubated with the limestone and the material was kept in plastic bags for 40 days, considering the types of soils studied. The amount of limestone depended on the doses tested, which were distributed in a completely randomized design, constituting 10 treatments (doses) and three replications, that were: 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 2.5; 5.0; 7.5; 10.0; 12.5; 15.0 and 20.0 t ha-1. After incubation, analyzes of the chemical characteristics of the soils, were carried out. The increase of limestone doses, applied to the dystrophic Red Latosol, caused alterations in Ca, Mg, H, Al and Fe contents; culminating in changes in characteristics as pH, CTC, V% and m%, when the texture was clayey and medium. Keywords: liming; fraction textural; CaCO3; soil correction.

Abstract:
During storage, many apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) genotypes lose their desirable textural qualities, but some like `Honeycrisp', maintain their sensory Crispness and Firmness. To understand this differential response of genotypes to postharvest changes in texture, reliable and quantifiable methods of texture measurement are needed. This study integrated data from a snapping test, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and sensory panels to study postharvest textural changes and to predict sensory textural attributes of Firmness, Crispness, Mealiness, and Juiciness. Three separate analyses on fresh, stored, and combined fresh and stored fruit data yielded different predictors for the same sensory attributes. Change in Crispness during storage was successfully predicted by change in Work during storage. Cell number and size were related to fresh fruit texture and its maintenance during storage. Unique textural properties of `Honeycrisp' were found to be inherited by its progeny.

Abstract:
Abstract Texture is one of the critical parameters that affect the process behavior of ore minerals. Traditionally, texture has been described qualitatively, but recent works have shown the possibility to quantify mineral textures with the help of computer vision and digital image analysis. Most of these studies utilized 2D computer vision to evaluate mineral textures, which is limited by stereological error. On the other hand, the rapid development of X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) has opened up new possibilities for 3D texture analysis of ore samples. This study extends some of the 2D texture analysis methods, such as association indicator matrix (AIM) and local binary pattern (LBP) into 3D to get quantitative textural descriptors of drill core samples. The sensitivity of the methods to textural differences between drill cores is evaluated by classifying the drill cores into three textural classes using methods of machine learning classification, such as support vector machines and random forest. The study suggested that both AIM and LBP textural descriptors could be used for drill core classification with overall classification accuracy of 84–88%.

This dissertation begins with connective and argumentative operators, called here, generally, as operators, which are related to textual texture and intends to check if the relative frequency of their occurrence influences on the degree of cohesion and coherence that attributes to the text at the moment of its reading. The substrate of the work is constituted by a group of compositions produced for the proposal activities in several subjects, which involves composition practice. Three Portuguese Language of High School and College teachers according to the criteria in which the degree of cohesion and coherence is the most important requisite for checking evaluated the compositions. We look for to verify the dependence between the relative frequency of operators and the grade attributed by the professors. The results suggest the existence of this dependence, even when the selected operators don´t present themselves correctly used according to the usual and normal operations required by syntax.

Abstract: Computer vision and image processing techniques play an important role in several fields, including object detection and image classification, which are very important tasks with applications in medical imagery, remote sensing, forensic analysis, skin detection, among others. These tasks strongly depend on visual information extracted from images that can be used to describe them efficiently. Texture is one of the main used characteristics that describes information such as spatial distribution, brightness and surface structural arrangements. For image recognition and classification, a large set of texture descriptors was investigated in this work, such that only a small fraction is actually multi-scale. Gray level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) have been widely used in the literature and are known to be an effective texture descriptor. However, such descriptor only discriminates information on a unique scale, that is, the original image. Scales can offer important information in image analysis, since texture can be perceived as different patterns at distinct scales. For that matter, two different strategies for extending the GLCM to multiple scales are presented: (i) a Gaussian scale-space representation, constructed by smoothing the image with a low-pass filter and (ii) an image pyramid, which is defined by sampling the image both in space and scale. This texture descriptor is evaluated against others in different data sets. Then, the proposed texture descriptor is applied in skin detection context, as a mean of improving the accuracy of the detection process. Experimental results demonstrated that the GLCM multi-scale extension has remarkable improvements on tested data sets, outperforming many other feature descriptors, including the original GLCM

Abstract I want to talk about tactile experiences, words that extend beyond touch. A full-body experience of space that begins with the senses, creating a collective understanding when everything is combined. We step in unbeknownst, activating our senses through the shapes and textures that enthral us. With our eyes, we access the dynamic of the room.  The foundation of my work is texture, so I explore the surface through it and textile is my chosen material because it allows me to do just that. By distorting, adding and pulling apart I can always get a new experience of it. In this project I work with three-dimensional patterns on the surface of the textile, and with subtle changes in volume I try to capture the light that falls on it and emphasis the texture to make the experience of it even richer.

Abstract:
A surface texture is a common design factor that affects a customer’s sensory perception of product quality. Customers perceive a surface quality using multiple sensory modalities, for example, vision and touch, and switch them through an interaction with a product, for example, a transition from vision to touch. Between such sensory modality transitions, human beings often predict subsequent modal perceptions using a prior modality, for example, predicting the tactile quality of a product from its appearance before actually touching it. We believe that a disconfirmation between prediction using a modality and an experience using another modality affects a perceived quality. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the quality of a surface texture with attention to the effects of a disconfirmation between a prior visual prediction and posterior tactual experience. To identify the textural factors contributing to such an effect, we conducted a sensory evaluation experiment with combinations of visual and tactile texture samples that were synthesized using a half-mirror. We demonstrate the appropriateness of the method with analysis of the results of an experiment using fourteen plastic texture samples having different textures that are commonly used in a product design.

Abstract:
Microstructure and texture of Zr alloys plays a significant role in deciding the material properties and its performance in nuclear reactor. In order to understand the development of microstructure, it is important to know the phase transformations mechanism in these alloys. Dilute Zr-Nb alloys exhibit a range of diffusional, diffusion less and hybrid phase transformations which includes martensitic omega and hydride transformation. With these points in view detail studies on the physical metallurgy aspects of the binary, ternary and quaternary Zirconium base alloys has been carried out in this study. Electron Diffraction and X-ray diffraction techniques have been used to determine the phases, defects and their crystallographic features. Hydriding is most important corrosion problem in the Zirconium cladding alloys. The mechanism of hydride phase transformation and their crystallographic and microstructural aspects has been presented in detail in some Zirconium alloys. Zirconium alloys being crystallographically asymmetric it shows deformation and annealing texture. Result of the studies on bulk and micro texture in some zirconium alloys and some micro-textural aspects on hydride formation is presented in this paper.

Abstract:
Compared with traditional sequential learning models, graph-based neural networks exhibit excellent properties when encoding text, such as the capacity of capturing global and local information simultaneously. Especially in the semi-supervised scenario, propagating information along the edge can effectively alleviate the sparsity of labeled data. In this paper, beyond the existing architecture of heterogeneous word-document graphs, for the first time, we investigate how to construct lightweight non-heterogeneous graphs based on different linguistic information to better serve free text representation learning. Then, a novel semi-supervised framework for text classification that refines graph topology under theoretical guidance and shares information across different text graphs, namely Text-oriented Graph-based Transductive Learning (TextGTL), is proposed. TextGTL also performs attribute space interpolation based on dense substructure in graphs to predict low-entropy labels with high-quality feature nodes for data augmentation. To verify the effectiveness of TextGTL, we conduct extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets, observing significant performance gains over conventional heterogeneous graphs. In addition, we also design ablation studies to dive deep into the validity of components in TextTGL.

Full text
Abstract:
A numerical model based upon a Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) code was developed to predict the thermal radiative properties (reflectance, transmittance, emittance) of a family of virtual alumina ceramics with prescribed textural features. The numerical samples were constituted of polydisperse spherical pores [20–120 μm] embedded in a continuous and homogenous alumina matrix. The texture of the alumina ceramics were numerically settled, allowing, in our case, to fix their porosity, their volumetric surface and their radii size distribution. The MCRT code was applied at T = 300 K and T = 1300 K since, at the local scale, the complex indices of refraction of the alumina matrix were known. The comparisons of the emittance spectra of the numerical samples with the ones acquired by infrared emittance spectroscopy on a single crystal of alumina (T = 300 K and T = 1300 K) allow to discuss the effects played by the temperature and by each textural parameters.

Abstract:
The influence of pulsed electric fields (PEF) treatment on freeze-drying for potato and strawberry tissues was investigated. Samples were pre-treated by PEF ( 400 V cm-1) for different treatment times. Freeze-drying was carried out at -17°C and 18.4 Pa or 30 Pa for potato and strawberry tissues, respectively. The effects of PEF pre-treatment was compared with intact samples. The drying time was reduced by 35% for potato and 30% for strawberry. The sample rehydration capacity and the electrolytes released during the rehydration were higher for pre-treated samples. Strawberries texture was characterized by the hardness, the cohesiveness and the springiness. Keywords: Pulsed Electric fields; Freeze-drying; Potato; Strawberry; Textural Properties.
