Abstract:
In this paper, we examine how methods for evaluating corpora in terms of technical terms can be used for characterising technical documents used as textual materials in translation training in a translation education setup. Technical documents are one of the standard types of textual materials used in translation training courses, and choosing suitable materials for learners is an important issue. In technical documents, technical terms play an essential role. Assessing how terms are used in these documents, therefore, would help translation teachers to choose relevant documents as training materials. As corpus-characterisation methods, we used self-referring measurement of the occurrence of terminology and measurement of the characteristic semantic scale of terms. To examine the practical applicability of these methods to assessing technical documents, we prepared a total of 12 short English texts from the six domains of law, medicine, politics, physics, technology and philosophy (two texts were chosen from each domain), whose lengths ranged from 300 to 1,150 words. We manually extracted terms from each text, and using those terms, we evaluated the nature and status of the textual materials. The analysis shows that even for short texts, the corpus-characterisation methods we provide useful insights into assessing textual materials.

Abstract:
In this article, the authors present a multimodal research model to research medical images based on multimedia information that is extracted from a radiological collaborative social network. The opinions shared on a medical image in a medico-social network is a textual description which in most cases requires cleaning by using a medical thesaurus. In addition, they describe the textual description and medical image in a TF-IDF weight vector using a “bag-of-words” approach. The authors then use latent semantic analysis to establish relationships between textual terms and visual terms in shared opinions on the medical image. The model is evaluated against the ImageCLEFmedbaseline, which is the ground truth for the experiments. The authors have conducted numerous experiments with different descriptors and many combinations of modalities. The analysis of results shows that when the model is based on two methods it can increase the performance of a research system based on a single modality both visually or textually.

Abstract:
We describe an approach for the automatic modality classification in medical image retrieval task of the 2010 CLEF cross-language image retrieval campaign (ImageCLEF). This paper is focused on the process of feature extraction from medical images and fuses the different extracted visual features and textual feature for modality classification. To extract visual features from the images, we used histogram descriptor of edge, gray, or color intensity and block-based variation as global features and SIFT histogram as local feature. For textual feature of image representation, the binary histogram of some predefined vocabulary words from image captions is used. Then, we combine the different features using normalized kernel functions for SVM classification. Furthermore, for some easy misclassified modality pairs such as CT and MR or PET and NM modalities, a local classifier is used for distinguishing samples in the pair modality to improve performance. The proposed strategy is evaluated with the provided modality dataset by ImageCLEF 2010.

Abstract:
The study of kinship has attracted the attention of many scholars in various linguistic, anthropological, and religious contexts. Because kinship terms are one of the linguistic systems of any language, the researchers adopted Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics theory as an analytical tool. This is because this SFL can explicate different fields of study such as linguistics and discourse analysis. Such fields are regarded as fields of language socialization that cannot be studied inseparable from their social or cultural contexts. To achieve a textual analysis of kinship terms, the researchers used selected sampled texts taken from the Glorious Quran and the Holy Bible. The main findings pointed out that Halliday’s model can be applied to different social fields such as religious, political, and economic texts. Such an analysis of these texts may lead to give some solutions to the social and economic problems in which human beings may face in everyday life.

Abstract:
The present study proposes a discourse-immanent view (following Wodak 2001) of political manifestos, examining them as sites for textually negotiating tensions and paradoxes, rather than focusing on their persuasive aspects. This approach is applied to the analysis of two founding documents of the Israeli religious settlers’ movement, where tensions between religious vision and actual politics have increased over time. Findings indicate that in the first manifesto (1974), discursive resources (temporality, point of view construction and terms of reference) are strategically used to contain tensions and maintain the movement’s dialectical vision of the relations between religion and politics. By contrast, the second manifesto (1980) exhibits simpler textual patterns which forgo this dialectical commitment, reflecting the eroding ability to textually reconcile ideological tensions as challenges to the movement’s vision grow. This is discussed as demonstrating the utility of discourse analysis for historical research in providing micro-evidence for the emergence of ideological change.

AbstractThe issue of cultural appropriation is at the crux of adaptation studies with emphasis on what constitute cultural junctures in cinematic renditions of textual sources, rather than how formal processes facilitate contextual and intertextual overlap. This paper explores processes for the appropriation of textual polysemy in visual terms in film. Drawing on classical semiotics and film semiotics, I propose a theoretical model for reconstructing the effect of contextual complexity and overlap manifest in textual polysemy in terms of visual signification in film. The proposed model is applied in an analysis the recurrent rose imagery in American Beauty (Sam Mendes 1999).

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to perform a linguistic analysis of mathematics textbooks. Mathematical text exercises are built up of linguistic structures which are significant for the pupil’s understanding of text exercises. Two different mathematics textbooks for grade three are analysed: Prima matematikand Tummen upp. The aim is to investigate how text exercises in mathematics textbooks are linguistically structured. The study analyses the style, form and content of the text and its relation to the reader. The result shows that the content of the text exercises is close to the pupil’s everyday reality, which ensures a close and strong relationship between the writer and the reader. Something which can entail difficulties for reading comprehension, however, is that the form consists of meaning-bearing mathematical terms which it can be difficult to relate to. Since the mathematical language and the everyday Swedish language meet in text exercises, it is important that they interact well with each other.

Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to investigate the concerns of secondary school teacher-librarians, that the subject headings set down by the Australian Schools Catalogue Information Service (ASCIS) do not cover topics in senior sourses of study. NSW HSC Economics was chosen to test this perception. Terms were extracted from three textual sources (syllabus, textbook and examination papers) and checked against the subject headings in the ASCIS Subject Headings List. A comparison was made between terms which matched exactly, those which were only partially matched and those which had no match. The linguistic complexity of the term (single-word or multi-word) and the number of textual sources using the term were also taken into account. The results showed a varying degree of match between textual terms and subject headings. Single-word terms found in more than one textual source were much more likely to be found in the subject headings than those from only one textual source. Multi-word terms were found less frequently than single-word terms, but were also more likely to be found when they came from more than one textual source. There was a large number of partial matches in this group, and these were found to be more general in concept than the textual terms. Most of the terms were found, but the general nature of the partial matches and the lack of adequate cross references may cause problems in subject analysis and retrieval.

Abstract:
In Brazil, 68% of the population can be classified as low-literacy readers, i.e., people at the rudimentary (21%) and basic (47%) literacy levels, according to the National Indicator of Functional Literacy (INAF, 2009). The PorSimples project used the two approaches of Textual Adaptation, Simplification and Elaboration, to help readers with low-literacy levels to understand Brazilian Portuguese documents on the Web, mainly newspaper articles. In this research we also used the two approaches above, but the focus was the genre of instructional texts. In tasks requiring the use of technical documentation, the quality of documentation is a critical point, because if the documentation is inaccurate, incomplete or too complex, the cost of the task or even the risk of accidents is greatly increased. Instructions manuals have two basic procedural relationships: the relation generation (by performing one of the actions (), the other () will automatically occur), and the relation enablement (when enables , then the agent needs to do something more than to guarantee that will be done). The project presented here, entitled NorMan, investigated the realization of the relationships between procedural actions in instruction manuals, providing the basis for creating an automatic term extraction method devoted to the genre of instructional texts, specifically technical manuals. We also proposed an adaptation of the authoring system of simplified texts created in the project PorSimples - the SIMPLIFICA - to deals with the genre of instrumental texts. The new SIMPLIFICA uses the list of term candidates, generated by the proposed method, with two functions: (a) to assist in the identification of words that should not be simplified by the lexical simplification method based on synonyms, and (b) to generate a lexical elaboration to facilitate the comprehension of the text

In the present work, we aim to investigate how the narrative sequences occur within the genre testimony record, procedural component that integrates the police investigation whilst being intended for the witness testimony. Our theoretical groundings are based on the general propositions of the Text Linguistics with authors as Koch (1997; 1999; 2002; 2008; 2009), Koch e Elias (2012; 2013) and Marcuschi (2008; 2012), and, more specifically, on the Discourse Textual Analysis with Adam (2011) regarding the text plan and narrative sequence studies. In relation to the legal discourse, we use Pel?gio (2002), Gomes (2011), Nucci (2014) and Fran?a (2015).The methodology consists of a documental research, of qualitative and descriptive nature, as well as guided by the inductive and deductive reasoning. The corpus is represented by three testimonial records obtained from a Women?s Police Station (Delegacia Especializada em Atendimento ? Mulher ? DEAM), located at Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Results indicate that the testimony provided by the witness is predominantly composed by several minor narratives ? the so-called embedded narratives, which act upon the text due to a global-level narrative. The results also indicate that the narrative sequences play an important role in the testimonial record genre, because they function as the main mechanism for the organization and arrangement of the witness testimony.

Abstract:
The task of term extraction in textual domains, which is a subtask of the text pre-processing in Text Mining, can be used for many purposes in knowledge extraction processes. These terms must be carefully extracted since their quality will have a high impact in the results. In this work, the quality of these terms involves both representativity in the specific domain and comprehensibility. Considering this high importance, in this work the effects produced in the comprehensibility and representativity of terms were evaluated when different term simplification techniques are utilized in text collections in Portuguese. The term extraction process follows the methodology presented in this work and the techniques used were radicalization, lematization and substantivation. To support this metodology, a term extraction tool was developed and is presented as ExtraT. In order to guarantee the quality of the extracted terms, they were evaluated in an objective and subjective way. The subjective evaluations, assisted by domain specialists, analyze the representativity of the terms in related documents, the comprehensibility of the terms with each technique, and the specialist\'s opinion. The objective evaluations, which are assisted by TaxEM and by Thesagro (National Agricultural Thesaurus), consider the number of extracted terms by each technique and their representativity in the related documents. This objective evaluation of the representativity uses the CTW measure (Context Term Weight) as support. Eight real collections of the agronomy domain were used in the experimental evaluation. As a result, some positive and negative characteristics of each techniques were pointed out, showing that the best technique selection for this domain depends on the main pre-established goal, which can involve obtaining better comprehensibility terms for the user or reducing the quantity of extracted terms

Abstract:
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the linguistic and textual mechanisms responsible for the activation of technical terms in manuals of technological products. We narrowed the field of the investigation to the lexical and semiological units in four technical manuals that deal with procedures for the use of technological products - automated time clocks. We departed from the hypothesis that there is a significant relation between text typology and the activation of terminology. In relation to the textual approach adopted, this study uses Charaudeau´s Semiolinguistic Theory and its three level competencies: situational, discourse and semiolinguistic (2001). In relation to the field of Terminology, this study is based on the Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT) (CABRÉ, 1999). To this end, we developed two points of investigation: a) to describe the text typology in the manuals, which are technical texts regulated by the deontic dimension of the prescription; b) to identify the syntactic-semantic mechanisms that create the terminological units in the manuals. We chose to analyze linguistic structures including the preposition para (and some equivalent structures: a fim de, para que, a fim de que) organized in sentences, extracted from the corpus from regular expressions for search of patterns created by the Unitex program (Université Marle-la-Valée, Sebastian Paumier, november of 2002). We chose to analyze this preposition because of its semantic-lexical properties: predicator (BERG, 2005), aspects that are relevant to the hypothesis that it is in this habitat that the activation of the terminology of the area happens. We created a rule that represented the possibilities for the analysis of the sentences including the preposition para - {PARA realizar (xt), use (yt)} ({TO achieve (xt), use (yt)}), in which para is classified as a purpose marker (MF). The extractions, which can be observed in the sentences, were submitted to the verification of the presence of lexical and semiotic units. The results obtained indicate that the structure {PARA realizar (xt), use (yt)} is one of the habitat for the activation of the terminology in technical manuals. This is a study that gathers textual and linguistic elements, going beyond the conceptual aspects of the specialized communication.

Abstract:
Abstract In the sociology of scientific knowledge and the sociology of translation, heterogeneous networks have been studied in terms of practices and so-called actor-networks. However, scientific practices are intellectually structured by codes. Cognitive structures interact and co-construct the organization of scholars and discourses into research programs, specialties, and disciplines. The intellectual organization of the sciences adds to and feeds back on the configurations of authors and texts. The social, textual, and cognitive sub-dynamics select upon each other asymmetrically. Selections can further be selected for stabilization along trajectories and then also be globalized—symbolically generalized—into regimes of expectations.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys psychotherapists’ common understandings for the primary terms the volume tracks: psychotherapy, religion, secular, science, medicine, Buddhism, spirituality, and terms for the ultimate aim of life such as enlightenment. Psychotherapists’ “conventional definitions” for these concepts are established as drawn from both textual analysis and data from interviews and ethnographic observation. The chapter then explains how therapists inherited these conventional definitions through brief histories of how European communities came to invent a modern concept of religion that is based on a Protestant prototype of inner belief or came to discover a Buddhism defined as atheistic (despite the evidence of Buddhist communities throughout history who propitiate deities). The chapter thus clarifies the socially constructed nature of these core concepts, concepts to which psychotherapists then contribute to in an ongoing revision and reconstruction.

Abstract:
Diagnosis prediction plays a key role in clinical decision supporting process, which attracted extensive research attention recently. Existing studies mainly utilize discrete medical codes (e.g., the ICD codes and procedure codes) as the primary features in prediction. However, in real clinical settings, such medical codes could be either incomplete or erroneous. For example, missed diagnosis will neglect some codes which should be included, mis-diagnosis will generate incorrect medical codes. To increase the robustness towards noisy data, we introduce textual clinical notes in addition to medical codes. Combining information from both sides will lead to improved understanding towards clinical health conditions. To accommodate both the textual notes and discrete medical codes in the same framework, we propose Multimodal Attentional Neural Networks (MNN), which integrates multi-modal data in a collaborative manner. Experimental results on real world EHR datasets demonstrate the advantages of MNN in terms of both robustness and accuracy.

This paper describes the results of the first shared task on taxonomy enrichment for the Russian language. The participants were asked to extend an existing taxonomy with previously unseen words: for each new word their systems should provide a ranked list of possible (candidate) hypernyms. In comparison to the previous tasks for other languages, our competition has a more realistic task setting: new words were provided without definitions. Instead, we provided a textual corpus where these new terms occurred. For this evaluation campaign, we developed a new evaluation dataset based on unpublished RuWordNet data. The shared task features two tracks: “nouns” and “verbs”. 16 teams participated in the task demonstrating high results with more than a half of them outperforming the provided baseline.

Abstract:
The web presence of manufacturing suppliers is constantly increasing and so does the volume of textual data available online that pertains to the capabilities of manufacturing suppliers. To process this large volume of data and infer new knowledge about the capabilities of manufacturing suppliers, different text mining techniques such as association rule generation, classification, and clustering can be applied. This paper focuses on classification of manufacturing suppliers based on the textual description of their capabilities available in their online profiles. A probabilistic technique that adopts Naïve Bayes method is adopted and implemented using R programming language. Casting and CNC machining are used as the examples classes of suppliers in this work. The performance of the proposed classifier is evaluated experimentally based on the standard metrics such as precision, recall, and F-measure. It was observed that in order to improve the precision of the classification process, a larger training dataset with more relevant terms must be used.

COVID-19 became a pandemic infecting more than 100 million people across the world and has been going on for over a year. A huge amount of data has been produced as electronic medical records in the form of textual data because of patient visits. Extracting this information may be very useful in better understanding the COVID-19 disease. However, challenges exist in interpreting the medical records typed as free text as doctors may use different terms to type in their observations. In order to deal with the latter, we created an ontology in Portuguese to describe the terms used in COVID-19 medical records in Brazil. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the ontology and how we are using it as the first step of a more complex NLP task.

Abstract:
Abstract Due to the impact of globalization, companies have extended their borders across nations to launch products more competitively. However, globalization affects various uncertainties and risks that may limit the performance of supply chains. Research indicates that models that incorporate uncertainties and risks will help to improve the resilience of global supply chains. In the era of technology, we experience the abundance of textual data from various web-media resources related to companies, which can be deployed to understand the impact of risks on the chain. Accordingly, this study aims to utilize textual data collected from news articles and earnings call transcripts to assess the vulnerability of the suppliers and the chain. Among many, we considered supply chain resource limits as a subcomponent of vulnerability and collected textual data associated with its sub-factors. Then, we proposed an integrated factor analysis and Analytical Network Process (ANP) method to model the company’s supply chain resource limits index. Specifically, factor analysis was used to determine the latent constructs of the variables that are grouped under resource limits and their correlations. This latent construct and correlations were then applied as the interdependencies among variables in the ANP to discover the final importance weights of the variables in terms of supply chain resource limits. The results of the study showed that the shortages of capacity, components, and energy supply are the most critical sub-factors. The company’s supply chain resource limits index (SCRLI) can be further calculated to assist decision-makers of an enterprise in supply chain configuration design, and improve the supply chain resilience.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) completed a total of 25 high friction surface treatment (HFST) projects across the state in 2018. This research study attempted to investigate the durability and performance of HFST in terms of its HFST-pavement system integrity and surface friction performance. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy-bauxite mortar. Field inspections were carried out to identify site conditions and common early HFST distresses. Cyclic loading test and finite element method (FEM) analysis were performed to evaluate the bonding strength between HFST and existing pavement, in particular chip seal with different pretreatments such as vacuum sweeping, shotblasting, and scarification milling. Both surface friction and texture tests were undertaken periodically (generally once every 6 months) to evaluate the surface friction performance of HFST. Crash records over a 5-year period, i.e., 3 years before installation and 2 years after installation, were examined to determine the safety performance of HFST, crash modification factor (CMF) in particular. It was found that HFST epoxy-bauxite mortar has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) significantly higher than those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures and Portland cement concrete (PCC), and good cracking resistance. The most common early HFST distresses in Indiana are reflective cracking, surface wrinkling, aggregate loss, and delamination. Vacuum sweeping is the optimal method for pretreating existing pavements, chip seal in particular. Chip seal in good condition is structurally capable of providing a sound base for HFST. On two-lane highway curves, HFST is capable of reducing the total vehicle crash by 30%, injury crash by 50%, and wet weather crash by 44%, and providing a CMF of 0.584 in Indiana. Great variability may arise in the results of friction tests on horizontal curves by the use of locked wheel skid tester (LWST) due both to the nature of vehicle dynamics and to the operation of test vehicle. Texture testing, however, is capable of providing continuous texture measurements that can be used to calculate a texture height parameter, i.e., mean profile depth (MPD), not only for evaluating friction performance but also implementing quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) plans for HFST.

Validation of Multispectral Imaging (MSI) technology for food and feed analysis. Food Standards Agency, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.zcr161.

Full text
Abstract:
The current testing environment for food and feed samples is complex and uses a wide variety of analytical technologies that range from chemical to PCR-based. Whilst these approaches can be deemed fit for purpose in terms of their final analytical result, they tend to be highly specialised and require considerable frontend processing to ensure that the target analyte can be reliably detected and quantified. These combined sample processing and analytical requirements typically impact on testing times and have associated cost implications that must be factored into routine testing and monitoring applications. MSI uses multiple discrete and informative wavelengths covering regions such as the UV and near infra-red spectrum to quickly determine surface colour, texture and possible chemical composition. Compared to traditional molecular biology approaches utilising DNA extraction followed by PCR-based analyses, MSI can simplify and reduce the time/costs associated with sample analysis. It is rapid and non-destructive.
