Abstract:
The diploma thesis is focused on the revitalization of the dilapidated area of the former textile factory in Brno, Obřany. Areal is located in the city's peripheral parts between Maloměřice and Obřany. The location of the areal creates a strategic potential for creating a closer relationship between the central part of the city and its peripheries which allows urban activities spread to the distant area. The main target of the paper was to promote the relationship between the island and the water element - the river which brings a unique composition for the creation of a new central point of the urban part, which in Obřany currently lacking. The main focus of the project was to support the local potential by expanding the range of urban activities and recreational opportunities with respect for industrial heritage of Brno. It was necessary to made a radical interventions for island revitalization. Cleaning the island from inappropriate, structural, statically or architecturally inadequate buildings and re-opening the space for public was needed. The former spinning factory was therefore a key element of the entire project. It is due to its monumental qualities predestined to place the main and dominant function which after a previous analysis and survey was allocated to the textile museum. As the opposite of this huge structure there were designed a free and grassy area of the park which has been cleaned from the old unsatisfactory objects. The preserved buildings of the former textile factories were individually revitalized and designed with new suitable functions.

Abstract:
Our whole society is affected by the digitisation process. The policies of the Swedish government encourage the cultural heritage organizations to strategically develop the digitisation of their collections. These strategies often aim to make the collections more accessible but there is not much research about how researchers who have use of the digital information meet with the digital collections. The intention of this thesis is to study four researchers in the field of humanities who have textile objects as source material, and their professional experience of the digitisation of the cultural heritage. The researchers were interviewed in a semi-structured qualitative way, and the interviews were recorded and transcribed for analyzation of the data collected.  The main result of the study is that the digital access of research material represents an improvement of their work when it comes to getting a quick and easy overview of their research subject which also represent a chance to improve the research quality by being able to compare and search for similar objects all over the world without having to travel to the collections. It has also become cheaper because of less travelling. Being able to take digital photos is also a big improvement compared to analogue photographs that are expensive and takes time to develop. One negative aspect that the study shows, is that the information in digital collections often lacks the quality that the researchers need, for example close-up pictures or relevant and reliable metadata. The researchers also experience an uncertainty in how to use the digital tools and computer programs in an effectively way and expresses a need for more knowledge about the different IT-systems. This thesis shows that the research topics seem to change due to the digitisation, partly because of the technological possibilities that new methods offers. Digital humanities points to this as a possibility to develop the research in the field of humanities and explore new areas that cannot be done without the digital methods.

Abstract:

An Egyptian archaeological textile, accessioned in the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) (Cat.No. 95/2444), from the Tomb of Hatnofer and Ramose, Eighteenth Dynasty (1550-1295 B.C.), Western Thebes was studied, with two textiles (Cat.Nos. 95/2443 and 95/2445) from the same tomb used as comparanda. The textile’s finely spun fibers, plain-weave balanced structure with selvedge fringes and lower edge fringes, and with various weavers’ marks, stains, and losses, provide invaluable historical data about finely woven, royal linens of Eighteenth Dynasty Egypt.

Scientific analysis used for this study include: visual annotations, polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) including fiber diameter measurements, and carbon-14 dating. Closely examining a textile and its fibers can provide information about the condition of the textile, linen quality, weaving techniques, and the life of the textile itself. While the linen fibers in the Study Textile (Cat.No. 95/2444) and the Comparanda Textile #1 (Cat.No.95/2443) have been identified, it is still uncertain whether or not the fibers in the Comparanda Textile #2 (Cat.No.95/2445) are of a different quality linen or of a different plant material which is very similar to linen within the bast fiber family. Further studies would be required to answer this and several other questions that remain.

Abstract:
Master's thesis is focused on conversion of former textile-industry area located in Brno-Obřany. The aim of the thesis was to build a new textile museum within the area’s landmark, former cotton mill, and to revive the whole surrounding area for both the locals and tourists. The exceptionality of this place lies on the industrial atmosphere and uniqueness of the island, on which the whole area spreads out. I achieved the overall program of the area through detailed analysis of neighbourhood and it’s needs and possibilities, as well as I studied the programs of successful textile museums worldwide. The project revives the whole island area; in contrast to the industrial history, the area is widely covered with green vegetation and adjusted as a leisure park. Besides a textile museum, there is also a great hall, an energy exposition with original Kaplan turbine, a cyclo-point and a snack bar.

Abstract:
How can the unique legacy of the most ancient of civilizations be represented within a single building? How can one building spans the area between heaven and earth, the space described in the cosmology of our pharonic ancestors? Certainly, to design such a building is a unique challenge, and an unprecedented opportunity, on this most privileged of sites in the history of mankind, that a museum is to be constructed capable of linking the immemorial past with the distant future spanning both the horizons of the ancients and those as yet unseen. Through the investigation of phenomenology, geometry, simplicity, purity and light, listening to the voice of silence, emerging to the light from the darkness, and by understanding the strength of simplicity after passing through complexity, This thesis offers an endless stream of ideas that challenge the mind. The vision for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is to establish a place where people from different nations and cultures will be able to immerse themselves in the rich culture heritage from more than 5.000 years of Egyptian civilization. With the support of new technology, more effective and efficient dissemination of information can be achieved, enabling the New Museum to be a source of enjoyable, entertaining, educational and cultural experiences for all visitors. This project aims at structuring a complex of exhibits and facilities, which will accommodate all Pharaonic periods, it will be the largest museum in the world, and will provide access to information and future knowledge. It results from the careful articulation of the problem and a subsequent ordering of constraints within the context of the competition proposal.

The investigation is concerned to the textual criticism at Genesis book, transcript across the IX scroll rolls from the Museu Nacional collection, in Rio de Janeiro, named Pergaminhos Ivriim. Pedro II, Regent of the Second Brazilian Kingdom, along his first travel to Europe, in 1871 and 1872. The analysis is related to the investigation about of massoretic features, divisions and scribal errors through the rolls I, II and III, concerned to the fragments of Genesis book, evaluated under rules formulated from the principles of Old Testament scholars. So that, some questions were posed, as the criteria used to find out the textual variants, the reasons to appoint the textual family and the period of its transcription. The conclusions were obtained by textual confrontation between the Genesis writing fragments according diferents periods of Hebrew text: ancient massoretic, late medieval and contemporary. These ones were closely connected each other under three stages of investigation: The first step related to the collation. The second step concerned to the analysis of the readings. The third step affected the textual family.

ABSTRACT: The present study, as a dissertation of the Master’s Degree Programme in Science Communication and Education at the University of Aveiro, is associated with a project “Towards a better role of Science Museums in the public understanding of science” which was carried out by The Physics Museum of the University of Coimbra and Exploratório, the Ciência Viva Centre of Coimbra, with the financial support of the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). A description is made of the work developed from the design and construction of a thematic exhibition on electromagnetism - “Oriente-se: A Bússola e os rumos da experiência” – up to the exploration by teachers and pupils, this including an investigation about the adequacy and efficiency of the texts associated with the exhibits. The exhibition consisted of replicas of XIX century instruments belonging to the Museum, which were used in the past to teach the contents of electromagnetism, accompanied by all the graphic support which is required by a exhibition that aims at integrating interactivity and History of Science. Regarding the exploration of the exhibition by teachers and pupils, special reference is made to a workshop with teachers, which was centred on the previous preparation of the visits by schools and following up activities, and to a first study (having questionnaires and observation grids as instruments for collecting data) on the adequacy and effectiveness for the pupils of the written texts used in the exhibition. This is an area of increasing interest among researchers, namely in the case of non-formal learning. A first comparison is also made between the impacts of homologous replicas, having different designs and presented, in none case, as part of the exhibition at the Museum and, in the other, diluted in the generalist collection of interactive exhibits of Exploratório. In spite of the preliminary nature of these studies, the main results point to the overall adequacy of both the activities and the texts associated with the exhibition for the age level of the pupils who are the target of the exhibition (7th – 9th grades and 10th – 11th grades). On the whole, the exhibition and the studies associated with it are taken as a significant contribution to the promotion of the relation School-Museum, to the improvement of the quality of the school visits and to a better stand of pupils in the field of Electromagnetism.

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to examine the African textiles in the Victoria and Albert Museum and how they reflect the historical and cultural relationship between Britain and Africa. As recently as 2009 the V&A’s collecting policy stated ‘Objects are collected from all major artistic traditions … The Museum does not collect historic material from Oceania and Africa south of the Sahara’ (V&A 2012 Appendix 1). Despite this a significant number of Sub-Saharan African textiles have come into the V&A during the museum’s history. The V&A also has a large number of textiles from North Africa, both aspects of the collection are examined. The division between North and Sub-Saharan Africa and between ‘art’ and ‘ethnographic’ museum collections is crucial to understanding the African textiles in the V&A. The V&A began collecting North African textiles in 1852 and went on to build a strong collection, particularly embroideries from the urban areas. The museum also acquired some Sub-Saharan African textiles during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. During the 1920s the Textiles Department began to consider whether textiles from certain areas should be classed as ethnography. This was the most active period for collecting North African embroidery but the same process led to the exclusion and removal of Sub-Saharan African textiles. After World War II the Circulation Department actively collected West African textiles to tour to art colleges. The closure of the Department caused many of these textiles to be de-accessioned. The V&A has also collected textiles produced in Britain for sale in

Abstract:
The survey aims to problematize masculinity in the exhibitions of the museum.  In what way is masculinity interpreted and valued in exhibitions? What is the attitude towards masculinity in gender oriented museological texts? This study investigates in which way masculinity is written about – how interpretations of masculinity emerge in the texts and what consequences this may have. The survey is based on the method of discourse analysis and the material is processed from a gender perspective. The source material consists of museological texts dealing with the topic of gender and museology, which also is the core material. A complement to this is a selection of exhibition catalogs from museums as well as reviews which are also based on art exhibitions. The main point of the source material consists of the museological texts. The survey highlights that the gender-conscious museological discourse understands, interpret and evaluate masculinity on a more or less given regulatory framework. The classification of this framework means that masculinity is understood in terms of power or unmanliness as a norm and representation. The result is a definition that is reproduced and transmitted via testimony, texts. This contributes to a perception of masculinity which is formulated in evaluative attitudes – about masculinity itself seen as a problem. The discursive framework which the gender-conscious texts consists of constructs the perception of masculinity, and are not merely observations about masculinity as reflections of reality. The discursive classification presumes what there is to know, or what can be found in the study and interpretation of masculinity, men or masculinity. The gender conscious museological discourse affects how truths and statements are constructed, developed and reproduced. The attitude towards masculinity – the perception of masculinity – in the gender-conscious museological discourse as it manifests itself in these texts, is that masculinity in practice doesn’t need to be problematized.

This Master s dissertation is directly related to the context of my professional experience as an Educator at the Museum of the Portuguese Language MLP located in the Estação da Luz (train station), in the city of São Paulo. The MLP is, therefore, the object of this study. In this sense, I have defined this museum as a large and complex text that presents itself to be read by visitors. Its enunciators are the founders and organizers who conceived and implemented it: Roberto Marinho Foundation. The first readers of this text are the Educators who, in their professional activities, mediate the reading of such peculiar immaterial collection that has the Portuguese language as the theme of its text. The addressees, that is, the target audience of the reading mediated by the Educators, are teachers and students in the public education system. The reading project aims, then, to validate the efficacy/efficiency relation of the museum reading. In the present dissertation, I shall attempt to expose the different strategies used by the enunciator (Museum/Educator) to configure the theme in question the Portuguese language and present it as a collection on display. The study considers the notion of verbovisual language syncretism as a fundamental conception of text and an important mechanism of analysis that allows visitors to read, understand and interpret the senses produced by the diverse forms of communication used in the presentation of the museum collection. Peculiar characteristics of this text define a reading profile which is revealed through the text itself and through the strategies of the reading process of MLP s text.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the desirability of Australia???s State museums to be inclusive of diverse cultures. In keeping with a cultural studies approach, and a commitment to social action, emphasis is placed upon enhancing the ability of State museums to fulfil obligations and expectations imposed upon them as modern collecting institutions in a culturally diverse nation. By relating the desirability and ability of State museums to attaining social justice in a multicultural Australia through broadening the concept of Australia???s heritage, the thesis is firmly situated within post-colonial discourse. The thesis analyses State multicultural, heritage, and museum legislation, in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, with regard to State museums as agents of cultural policy. Results from a survey, Greeks and Museums, conducted amongst Australia???s Greeks in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, reveal an anomaly between their museum-going habits and the perception of those habits as expressed by government policies promoting the inclusion of Australians of a non-English speaking background in the nation???s cultural programmes. In exploring the issue of inclusiveness, the thesis highlights the need for cultural institutions to shift the emphasis away from audience development, towards greater audience participation. The thesis outlines an initiative-derived Queensland Model for establishing an inclusive relationship between museums and communities, resulting in permanent, affordable, and authoritative collections, while simultaneously improving the museums??? international reputation and networking capabilities. By using the example of one of the nation???s non-indigenous communities, and drawing upon material obtained through the survey, and a catalogue containing photographs and lists of Greek textile collections found in the Powerhouse Museum (MAAS), Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Immigration Museum, Melbourne, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, as well as collections owned by private individuals, the thesis focuses on the role played by museums in constructing social cohesion and inclusiveness.

This diploma thesis is built on prediploma project, whose aim was to create a strategy for converting of ground of textile factory Perla in Usti nad Orlici. During prediploma project functional content of the whole area was designed, for diploma thesis it was chosen part of this territory and it was processed in detail. Specifically, it was chosen the southwestern part of the area situated around a factory smokestack. Partly, there is a new use of existing buildings and partly there are designed new objects. Preserved buildings will be newly used as a museum, gallery, IQ center, formal hall, shops and offices. All new buildings in the selected area will be used for commercial purposes, namely for shops, offices, services and a cafeteria. Important city-forming elements are two squares: one smaller around the chimney, which is intimate, and the second square, which is larger, so there is enough room for holding various social events.

Abstract:
Against a background of feminist art theories arguing that the hierarchies in art as based on masculine norms, the present thesis examines the four foundations associated with the Swedish state museum of modern art Moderna Museet. The object descriptions are gone through with open coding, to see wether there are formulations in these that affect the possibility to utilize the foundations yield for purchasing textile art. To ground the conclusions, the textile artworks in the collection are reviewed. The findings show that there are no terms in the object descriptions that would explain the low representation of textile art in the collection, since no terms regarding the artworks material nor the artists gender are set. It could therefore rather be a subjective choice by the decision-makers at the museum. Textile art’s position as a traditionally feminine craft renders it not self-evident within the masculine norms of art and modern art museums, and the causes of the mis-representation as well as future prospects are discussed.

The factory premises of the former factory OP Prostějov is the challenge for the future generations how to appraise today unused buildings which were build in 1950's. My design is counting with formation of new part of town, which disposes with centralizing the town-hall administration in one place allowing simple moving between individual authorities. Next there is designed the habitation as the small flats for old people and also big flats with interesting view. In some buildings there is designed the business incubator and in other building there is even the school. There are all facilities, services and leisure activities provided in the area. The Museum of Industrial Heritage is located in the middle of all events. It has three parts - exhibition, auditorium and deposit with administration. The old heating plant nearby is used as library and médiatheque with archives in connection with the museum. Shops, restaurants and other services are placed around.

Singh, Harpreet. "Religious Identity and the Vernacularization of Literary Cultures of the Pañjāb, 1500-1700." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10561.

Full text
Abstract:
Sometime in the first half of the second millennium, the Pañjāb witnessed a literary transformation. This historical process enabled the people of the region to self-consciously augment and even supplant forms of knowledge that emerged out of Sanskritic and Persianate cultural practices with regional ones, a complex phenomenon that varied tremendously, based largely on the religious identity of the writers. The elite of Sikh, Islamic, and Hindu communities drove this innovation: all literary activity in the Pañjāb was supported almost exclusively by the centers of religion, rather than the royal court. This work stands in sharp contrast to the view that religion played no significant role in South Asia’s so-called “vernacularization.” The confluence of three major religious communities—and the distinct literary cultures that they produced—makes the Pañjāb an ideal ground to examine the complex nature of this literary transformation. While this work engages with premodern literary cultures broadly to understand the larger trends in literary production, the arguments presented are ultimately based on a careful reading of the literary worlds represented in four near-contemporaneous texts that are specific to each religious community—the shabads of the Sikh Gurū Nānak (1469-1539); the kāfīs attributed to the Muslim Ṣūfī Shāh Ḥusain (1538-99); the Hanumān Nāṭak (1623) of the Hirdai Rām Bhallā and the vāṇī of Bābā Lāl Dayāl (17th c.), both Hindū Vaiṣṇavas. The work highlights similarities and dramatic differences in literary production and circulation of discourses within material cultures that were shaped by self-conscious religious communities.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into how Swedish non-Muslim women look at Muslim women, as well as the manner in which Swedish authors have depicted women and Islam. Through qualitative interviews and text analysis, my knowledge has grown.

The selection of Swedish academic writers included in this study wants to show that the violation of women is not about religion but about how the Quran has been misinterpreted, and how the world looks at the Muslim culture. Among the authors we find theories that the woman is a victim of society, misinterpretations and prejudices but also a victim because of lack of equality in Islam.

The knowledge of Islam is not much developed among the interviewees and they have a split view of the Muslim woman. Partly she is seen as a victim of the veil, subjugated and inferior. Partly it is pointed out that she is a part of Muslim religion in the same way as the man is. There is a view among the interviewees that women are violated because of religion. The Muslim man has a grim image and is seen as the head of the family.

McNutt, Genevieve Theodora. "Joseph Ritson and the publication of early English literature." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31497.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of antiquary and scholar Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) in publishing significant and influential collections of early English and Scottish literature, including the first collection of medieval romance, by going beyond the biographical approaches to Ritson's work typical of nineteenth- and twentieth-century accounts, incorporating an analysis of Ritson's contributions to specific fields into a study of the context which made his work possible. It makes use of the 'Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum' to shed new light on Ritson's use of the manuscript collections of the British Museum. The thesis argues that Ritson's early polemic attacks on Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and the editors of Shakespeare allowed Ritson to establish his own claims to expertise and authority, built upon the research he had already undertaken in the British Museum and other public and private collections. Through his publications, Ritson experimented with different strategies for organizing, systematizing, interpreting and presenting his research, constructing very different collections for different kinds of texts, and different kinds of readers. A comparison of Ritson's three major collections of songs - A Select Collection of English Songs (1783), Ancient Songs (1790), and Scotish Songs (1794) - demonstrates some of the consequences of his decisions, particularly the distinction made between English and Scottish material. Although Ritson's Robin Hood (1795) is the most frequently reprinted of his collections, and one of the best studied, approaching this work within the immediate context of Ritson's research and other publications, rather than its later reception, offers some explanation for its more idiosyncratic features. Finally, Ritson's Ancient Engleish Metrical Romance's (1802) provides a striking example of Ritson's participation in collaborative networks and the difficulty of finding an audience and a market for editions of early English literature at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
The issues of secularism and egalitarianism are at odds with each other in today’s French society. Arguably, minorities, including female Muslim immigrants encounter inequality and bigotry – everywhere from public spaces to employment opportunities – particularly social, economic, and religious discrimination. This has disproportionately affected Muslim women who wear religious attire, or the attire which is considered has religious character, and has led to a series of legal disputes in the context of secular laws and the French laïcité.The research investigated the discourses within French jurisprudence by looking at the decisions of two national Supreme Courts (Cour de Cassation and Conseil d’État) concerning Muslim women. To dissect the problem more closely, the dissertation features two case studies which are commonly called the Baby-Loup case and the burkini case. The main theoretical framework utilised in this study is CDA, with secondary analysis using the social constructionist theory. Applying CDA to the legal sphere renders valuable insight into legal texts and decisions through sociological lens. The analysis supports the conclusion that the jurisprudences raise issues of socio-political nature about the power of dominant ideology present within law institutions, and thus how they influence the representation of Muslim women in France. Despite divergent judgements, the CDA reveals that legal discourses support the notion on unequal treatment of them as non-preferred citizens – a burden within a majoritarian, liberal secular society – thus deepening their vulnerability and exacerbating overall inequality

Abstract:
This study unites the burgeoning academic field of exhibition histories and the critiques of race-based exhibition practices that crystallised in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s. It concerns recent practices of presenting and contextualising black creativity in British publicly funded art museums and galleries that are part of a broader attempt to increase the diversity of histories and perspectives represented in public art collections and exhibitions. The research focuses on three concurrent 2010 exhibitions that aimed to offer a non-hegemonic reading of black creativity through the use of non-art-historical conceptual and alternative curatorial models: Afro Modern (Tate Liverpool), Action (The Bluecoat), and a retrospective of works by Chris Ofili (Tate Britain). Comparative exhibitions of the past were typically premised on concepts of difference that ultimately resulted in the notional separation of black artists from mainstream discourses on contemporary art and histories of British art. Through a close and critical textual analysis of these three recent exhibitions, which is informed by J.L. Austin’s theory of speech acts (1955), the study considers whether, and to what extent the delimiting curatorial practices of the past have been successfully abandoned by public art museums and galleries, and furthermore, whether it has been possible for British art institutions to reject the entrenched, exclusive conceptions of British culture that negated black contributions to the canon and narratives of British art in the first place. The exhibition case studies are complemented and contextualised by an in-depth history of the Bluecoat’s engagement with black creativity between 1976 and 2012, which provides a particular insight into the ways that debates about representation, difference and separatism have impacted the policies and practices of one culturally significant art gallery that is frequently overlooked in histories of black British art. With reference to the notion of legitimate coercion as defined by Zygmunt Bauman (2000), the study determines that long-standing hegemonic structures continue to inform the modes through which public art museums and galleries in Britain curate and control black creativity.

The development of digital museums is to preserve and provide access to the important culture resources through the digital collection. The purpose of this research was to study the use behavior of the Textiles & Costume Digital Museum among students from the departments of Textiles & Clothing and Accessories Design & Fashion Retailing. A total of 22 students were interviewed and involved in the search tasks given in the study. Their information needs and information seeking behaviors were analyzed. Results of the study reveal that most students’ information needs came from their class assignments. To fulfill their class requirements, students used to collect needed information from internet, magazines, and newspapers for different subject areas. High quality pictorial information was often required. From their use of the Textiles & Costume Digital Museum, students were positive about the classification of the materials, pictures, and multimedia presentations. However, a more user-oriented structure and higher resolution pictures were both needed. The study also suggests that for future implementation, different contents and interfaces can be designed for use among different users. Continuously expanding and updating in content and increasing channels for learning interaction might be a way to promote the use of the digital museum. Future studies might focus on the use the system among different communities.

Abstract:
The collections of textiles / clothes that are displayed in museums usually present a lack of information about the textile materials that compose them. In this sense, from the point of view of an approach that goes beyond history and clothing, the textiles belonging to the collections of the museums show an absence of specific information, that is to say, generally the exhibitions strive to present the clothing itself, in its shapes and volumes, not having a closer look at the specificity of the textile surface design nor its characteristics. The recognition of this fact attests and justifies the relevance of this proposal, since the understanding of the textile production characteristics can provide valuable information to visitors, researchers and design students through more complete documentation. This paper deals with the issue of identification and analysis of textile materials present in the clothing of the nineteenth century. Encompassed in the area of textile heritage, clothing and design, the research was conducted at the Alberto Sampaio Museum (ASM) in Portugal, and the Imperial Museum (IM) in Brazil, investigating in the technical reserves of these museums the garments of the nineteenth century in their details of surface design, being important to emphasize that the fashion segment encompasses a wide dimension and, therefore, this linkage between textile and fashion is essential to the research. It is important to mention that this research is also of great importance for the teaching and training of design, guiding the professionals in the area, as well as the public in general, in a more concise way, understanding how the textile materials have changed throughout this century. A more complete catalogue form was created with the details of the structure of the textile components of the garments analysed, divided into (A) Clothing, (B) Textile Materials and (C) Textile Surface Design, as a way of preserving the textile heritage. The results allowed a contribution to the specific knowledge of textile materials, clothing and surface design in this period. The systematization of the applied methodologies led to the development of a practical guide to identify and analyse textiles / clothes, which is also a relevant documentation, since it will safeguard the characterization of textiles / clothes present in museums, essential for a detailed understanding of the origins of textiles and their histories and thus, with this catalogue, preserve the textile heritage and contribute to the work in the technical reserves in the museology sector.

Abstract:
A comparative examination of the original and reproduction Gone With the Wind costumes at the Harry Ransom Center is at the heart of this study, which proposes to trace the relationship between the analogue original costume, the replica garment, and the digital image reproduction. A discussion of definitions of authenticity and “the original” within such areas as conservation, film studies, and audience perception explores the questions: what is the role of the reproduction, and can it challenge the authority and “aura” of the original? This inquiry illustrates that authenticity is negotiated; it is not always fixed in a clear line ranging from “the real thing” on one side to “the copy” on the other. The study concludes with examining digital image reproductions of costume. The online digital database record can potentially reveal more than a face-to-face encounter with the object in a gallery space, illuminating the biography and history of the garment, changes in curatorial decisions and exhibition practice, and the experience of tactility and embodiment.

The exhibitions are analyzed in terms of their contents and character, are assessed in terms of their degree of cultural interpretation, and generally classified on the basis of the prevailing display methodology used, including (1) the traditional anthropoligical approach (2) the model culture approach and (3) the fine arts approach. In Chapter Three, these approaches are further discussed in terms of their merits and limitations. Additional limitations and problems of cultural interpretation encountered by local mu- seums featuring Aborigines' textiles and clothing are discussed. Based on concepts of interpretation of cultures put forward by anthropologist Clifford Geertz, a more integrated approach to exhibiting traditional textiles is proposed. In Chapter Four these concepts are applied to Paiwan ethnic textiles and clothing, examplifying the cultural interpretation approach to museum exhibition, comprising : 1. Social and cultu- ral background of the Paiwan Minority. 2. Material resources, manufacture, and uses of Paiwan ethtnic textiles and clothings. 3. Symbolism and meaning of ornamental designs applied to Paiwan costumes. 4. Paiwan ethnic textiles and clothing : changes and modern developments. Chapter Five concludes that museums do play a decisive role as cultural interpreters for our society. Their specific perspective and approach to staging exhibition will definitely influence the public's concept and appreciation of the role and cultural significance of the textiles and clothing characteristic of our Taiwan ethnic minorities. In conclusion, it is pointed out that using a cultural inter- pretative approach to Paiwan textiles and clothing has manifested the merits of this particular approach to museum exhibits.

This paper is a study on the Four Giving promoted by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. In addition, this paper intends to construct some ideas based on the textual evidences of the Four Immeasurable Mind (Loving Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity). Not only that, studies will be made in reference to the permanent exhibition of the Buddha Museum, investigating how the Four Immeasurable Mind have been interpreted in terms of Four Giving, as well as how these ideas have been implemented in the permanent exhibitions of the Buddha Museum. For Loving Kindness of the Four Immeasurable Mind, it refers to the interpretation of “to give others confidence.” This is presented in the Life of the Buddha, with the intention to initiate right understandings of Buddhism and develop wisdom among humanity as its significance. The Treasures of the Underground Palace follows the idea of “to give others hope”, with the main purposes to carry forward the righteous teachings of the Buddha and continuity of human civilization. This reflects on the Compassion aspect of the Four Immeasurable Mind, and exemplifies the spirit and values of bodhisattva practices. In terms of Joy of the Four Immeasurable Mind, it follows the interpretation of “to give others joy” which is implemented in the Buddhist Festivals exhibition at the Buddha Museum. It portrays the ethnicity of Buddhism and living experiences of the Buddha’s teachings. The Historical Museum of Fo Guang Shan is an interpretation of “to give others convenience”. It shows the mindset and essence of how the propagation of the Dharma in response to situations, as well as the practices of the Mahayana bodhisattva path.

With respect to the relationship between the religious and the political, the 19th century was marked by the resituating within Egyptian thought of innovative questions and subjects by the great figures of the Al-Nahdah (Renaissance), while the 20th century was characterized by a pronounced polarization between Muslim reformism, activist holistic Islamism and Muslim humanistic liberalism. What of the positions of contemporary Egyptian intellectuals (2011-2015) in this regard? What are their primary expressions of conceiving the state through the prism of the relationship under discussion? How do these current approaches reflect continuities, evolutions or ruptures in conceiving the state with regard to modern Egyptian thought (1805-2010)? To propose avenues for answering these questions, the principal works and other contributions of 22 intellectuals will be studied and analyzed taking into consideration the conception of public space, of the State’s source of legitimacy and legislation, again viewed through the prism of the relationship between the religious and the political. Most of these intellectuals are virtually absent from the literature – especially the French and English – despite their contributions and their influence on the contemporary Egyptian intellectual scene. Their discourses will be examined using an interdisciplinary, applied and critical approach.
