Full textMany Problems surround the spread and use of data on social media. There is a need to promote trust on social platforms, regarding the sharing and consumption of data. Data online is mostly in textual form which poses challenges for automation solutions because of the richness of natural language. In addition, the use of micro-messages as the main means of communication on social media makes the problem much more challenging because of the scarceness of features to analyze per body of text. Our experiments show that data anonymity solutions cannot preserve user anonymity without sacrificing data quality. In addition, in the field of author verification, which is the problem of determining if a body of text was written by a specific person or not, given a set of documents known to be authored by them, we found a lack of research working with micro-messages. We also noticed that the state-of-the-art does not take text semantics into consideration, making them vulnerable to impersonation attacks. Motivated by these findings, we devote this thesis to tackle the tasks of (1) identifying the current problems with user data anonymity in text, and provide an initial novel semantic-based approach to tackle this problem, (2) study author verification in micro-messages and identify the challenges in this field, and develop a novel semantics-based approach to solve these challenges, and (3) study the effect of including semantics in handling manipulation attacks, and the temporal effect of data, where the authors might have changing opinions over time. The first part of the thesis focuses on user anonymity in textual data, with the aim to anonymize personal information from online user data for safe data analysis without compromising users’ privacy. We present an initial novel semantic-based approach, which can be customized to balance between preserving data quality and maximizing user anonymity depending on the application at hand. In the second part, we study author verification in micro-messages on social media. We confirm the lack of research in author verification on micro-messages, and we show that the state-of-the-art, which primarily handles long and medium-sized texts, does not perform well when applied on micro-messages. Then we present a semantics-based novel approach which uses word embeddings and sentiment analysis to collect the author’s opinion history to determine the correctness of the claim of authorship, and show its competitive performance on micro-messages. We use these results in the third part of the thesis to further improve upon our approach. We construct a dataset consisting of the tweets of the 88 most followed twitter influencers. We use it to show that the state-of-the-art is not able to handle impersonation attacks, where the content of a tweet is altered, changing the message behind the tweet, while the writing pattern is preserved. On the other hand, since our approach is aware of the text’s semantics, it is able to detect text manipulations with an accuracy above 90%. And in the fourth part of the thesis, we analyze the temporal effect of data on our approach for author verification. We study the change of authors’ opinions over time, and how to accommodate for that in our approach. We study trends of sentiments of an author per a specific topic over a period of time, and predict false authorship claims depending on what timeframe does the claim of authorship fall in

Full textThe purpose of this study is an analysis of the writing of Juan Goytisolo (Barcelona, 1931). It centres on the critical aspect of the writer's intellectual and literary project, and therefore on the way in which the sense of his texts is constructed in close relation to the Spanish literary tradition. It also presents a reconsideration of previous approaches to this writer's work, in order to examine, from a hermeneutic perspective, the work on language and the signification procedures developed by the author in accordance with precise objectives. The concepts of interpretation, reflexivity and reworking are thus at the centre of the demonstration, the purpose of which is to propose a new reading of this literary creation based on the renewal of aesthetic forms and on poetic expression which is open to the dialogue between cultures and traditions. The signification of the continuous movement of the repetitions which articulate Juan Goytisolo's writing technique, is compared to the thinking of the author and his view of the implications of the return to collective history and to cultural heritage, in order to question ideological discourses and the representations

Full textWe have objective to establish the model of the textual communication distinct from the model of the oral communication. With this intention, it is initially advisable to illustrate the value of the text as a statement in linguistics, through the comparison with the term "speech". Because the interlocutors cannot be located in space-time simultaneity, it is necessary to examine the factors relating to the textual communication, for example, the relations existing between the text and the subjects (author and readers), the question of time, etc. To establish the model of the textual communication, on the one hand, we count on triple mimèsis of Paul Ricœur. In addition, we underline the plurality of interpretation. Various interpretations of a text do not exist separately but they maintain the interactive relations. Furthermore, through these relations, the interpretations shape synchronically a topographic plan. This one is not fixed but transformed diachronically. We can define these textual interactions as textual circulation. By this circulation, a text can maintain its vitality, namely its presence
Sorel, Françoise. "Les nouvelles de Peter Stamm : le cours des textes." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BOR30046.
Full textThe work of the Swiss writer Peter Stamm is characterized by its diversity. It relies on several literary genres, including novels, plays, youth books, poetological essays and an important set of short stories. The essential themes are classical : the human relationships, love, death. The brief prose of the German-speaking writer, born in 1963, strikes the reader by its powerful effects. The stories of Peter Stamm take place in the contemporary world, in the everyday life. They are told in the terms of a mimetic aesthetic. The specular image of reality is challenged from within by a haunting network of imaginary elements. Hence, the way of things offered to see is subjected to contrary forces. They coexist. The topography in the work also testifies that opposites do coexist. The notions of here and elsewhere meet continuously. In the temporal field also, opposite conceptions or categories are put in tension: linearity and circularity of time, present moment and eternity. The category of the characters is also marked by the coexistence of very varied profiles and brings another testimony of the degree of openness of the work. The logical scheme of the paradox, associating opposites, is the major structuring element of Stamm's short stories production. The genre models of Kurzgeschichte and Novelle, theoretically incompatible, coexist in Stamm’s world. His texts contain, more generally, tangible traces of a double heritage, referring to both Romanticism and Modernity. The poetic orientation of Stamm's short stories, the way the texts go, can be grasped by exploring all these areas in friction

Full textCosmopolitism is a turn of mind which allows one to feel at home abroad as well as in one's own country. Cosmopolitans are people who travel from one country to another and are in touch with people of any nationality. Can such a definition be attributed to stendhal and his younger friend merimee? what kind of cosmopolitism is theirs ? both of them prove to be cosmopolitans, owing to their professions as well as their vocations. Yet though they crave for an opening to "elsewhere", they however reason in a tipically french way of reflexion; observing manners, inquiring about the anecdotic history of every country, here is their endless occupation. Now to achieve such a study, they choose writing short stories, which being concise, can seem "a priori" contrary to printing out space dissemination. Whether they travel in france or abroad, only peculiar places, insolite situations or exceptional people attract them. But this quest for particularism constitutes only a step to universalism. Merimee and stendhal universes are first of all a world full of passions which have no real limits. Nothing but a mythical south can satisfy a few privileged people's deep aspirations. Cosmopolitism gets unexpectedly overreached when, as they don't find in reality anything fulfilling their curiosity and their wishes, each of them evades in his own way to an imaginary world where all limits are abolished

Full textThis work rests upon a corpus of reconstituted writing processes, collected in an intermediate class of primary school with "Genèse du texte" word processing program. It aims to analyse the traces of writers' métadiscursive activity, seen as an integral component of written self expression. Information is transcribed according to the methods of genetic criticism, adapted to the specific case of writing with a word processing program. The analysis proceeds by observing manners of expression in order to approach the meaning : the purpose is to process in to understand certain features of children's school writing, by observing how their plan for the composition interacts with language through such clues as breaks, or steps in composing their text, or delays to modify or extend it. What emerges from the study is that the pupils bring into play different sorts of métadiscursive activity, according to what is at stake in the text, what is its purpose, and as well to the writer himself. The reconstituted processes which are analysed here show that the pupils are creating, step by step, a relation to language that cannot be confined to written self expression. They demonstrate a constant attention paid to the bulding blocks of language by these novice writers, who sometimes have referential or practical considerations, but also seem concerned with langage itself

Full textThe examination of the successes achieved by english amateurs and of the profusion of portraits is divided into three stages. From 1603 to 1632, the court asserted itself thanks to its collections and its portraits, which deviated from rigid aesthetics, notably through rubens. The royal family was disunited, particularly about the dilemma between war and peace facing the continent. From 1632 to 1641, from van dyck's settling in london to his death, painting reflected the vision of a pacified world nurtured by charles i, who came to terms with spain and the vatican, while the nobility multiplied glorious deeds (hamilton's purchase of the della nave cabinet. . . ). Charles and his courtiers profited by the metamorphosis of portraits of state, in armour and family ones, which was orchestrated by van dyck, whose knowledge of titian was crucial for his ideal of grace. While three equestrian portraits by van dyck display the king's triumph and while peace and the arts were praised by gentileschi in queen's house at greenwich, aristocrats sat for friendly and loving portraits. Two mythological projects designed for greenwich, which were given to jordaens and reni, failed as tenseness grew. During the civil war, dobson portrayed royalists, walker and lely parliamentarians : cooper asserted himself on both sides, and others showed the refugees were sociability lay. The ebb of collected works was orientated towards brussels (archduke leopold-william), madrid (philip iv) and paris (mazarin and jabach). This does not square with the geography which prevailed from 1603 to 1641 (flanders and the united provinces providing london with artists, and italy providing pictures), a period characterized by the duality between the courtiers' brilliance (arundel, buckingham. . . ) and the ruptures caused by the stuarts. Painting doesn't wholly seem as a means which would have helped royal power to be recognized, a power whose prerogatives were contended and which was finally abolished

Full textThe issues of secularism and egalitarianism are at odds with each other in today’s French society. Arguably, minorities, including female Muslim immigrants encounter inequality and bigotry – everywhere from public spaces to employment opportunities – particularly social, economic, and religious discrimination. This has disproportionately affected Muslim women who wear religious attire, or the attire which is considered has religious character, and has led to a series of legal disputes in the context of secular laws and the French laïcité.The research investigated the discourses within French jurisprudence by looking at the decisions of two national Supreme Courts (Cour de Cassation and Conseil d’État) concerning Muslim women. To dissect the problem more closely, the dissertation features two case studies which are commonly called the Baby-Loup case and the burkini case. The main theoretical framework utilised in this study is CDA, with secondary analysis using the social constructionist theory. Applying CDA to the legal sphere renders valuable insight into legal texts and decisions through sociological lens. The analysis supports the conclusion that the jurisprudences raise issues of socio-political nature about the power of dominant ideology present within law institutions, and thus how they influence the representation of Muslim women in France. Despite divergent judgements, the CDA reveals that legal discourses support the notion on unequal treatment of them as non-preferred citizens – a burden within a majoritarian, liberal secular society – thus deepening their vulnerability and exacerbating overall inequality

Full textThis Ph.D. thesis is about the establishment of textual data similarities in the client relation domain. Two subjects are mainly considered : - the automatic analysis of short messages in response of satisfaction surveys ; - the search of products given same criteria expressed in natural language by a human through a conversation with a program. The first subject concerns the statistical informations from the surveys answers. The ideas recognized in the answers are identified, organized according to a taxonomy and quantified. The second subject concerns the transcription of some criteria over products into queries to be interpreted by a database management system. The number of criteria under consideration is wide, from simplest criteria like material or brand, until most complex criteria like color or price. The two subjects meet on the problem of establishing textual data similarities thanks to NLP techniques. The main difficulties come from the fact that the texts to be processed, written in natural language, are short ones and with lots of spell checking errors and negations. Establishment of semantic similarities between words (synonymy, antonymy, ...) and syntactic relations between syntagms (conjunction, opposition, ...) are other issues considered in our work. We also study in this Ph. D. thesis automatic clustering and classification methods in order to analyse answers to satisfaction surveys

Full textThe De gestis in Perside (CPG III 6968), which contents a religious polemic at the Persian court between Pagans, Jews and Christians, has been edited in 1899 by E. Bratke. This dissertation presents a new critical edition of the work with a first complete french translation. Since a short form of the text has been discovered in a manuscript of the Vatican Library, the question of its date and place has to be reformulated. It seems, in particular, that the original aim of the discussion was not anti-Jewish. Aphroditian’s Tale must have emerged in a Christian community – Hierapolis in all likelihood – that wished to possess a picture of Christ capable of competing with that of Edessa. The context of emergence of the whole polemic remains unclear. Both Aphroditian’s Tale and part of the anti-Jewish argument have found an echo in later works. The Tale has moreover been translated in Slavic, with names of the Magi which proved to come from a Greek manuscript of Mount Athos

Full textFemale portraits are abundant in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fiction, short stories and novels alike. The influence of the women evolving in his private sphere may be at the origin of his ambiguous feminist vision, as his allegiance was divided between his Puritan inheritance (both the Mannings and the Hawthornes) on the one hand, and, on the other, the emerging feminist convictions of his in-laws (the Peabodys). Hawthorne’s female portraits are thus characterized by a tendency to binarism as they pit an essentialist view of women against a differentialist one. This binarist perspective reflects the narrow-mindedness of the patriarcal system which the male heroes try to defend and maintain. Deleuze and Guatarri’s concepts of “minor literature” and “becoming-woman” will help us understand how the woman-image of the Puritans is a minored woman in the realm both of the social order and the symbolic order. Hawthorne’s feminist voice is an equivocal one as his text is undergoing a subterranean process of “becoming-woman.”

Full textAutomatic short text classification is more and more used nowadays in various applications like sentiment analysis or spam detection. Short texts like tweets or SMS are more challenging than traditional texts. Therefore, their classification is more difficult owing to their shortness, sparsity and lack of contextual information. We present two new approaches to improve short text classification. Our first approach is "Semantic Forest". The first step of this approach proposes a new enrichment method that uses an external source of enrichment built in advance. The idea is to transform a short text from few words to a larger text containing more information in order to improve its quality before building the classification model. Contrarily to the methods proposed in the literature, the second step of our approach does not use traditional learning algorithm but proposes a new one based on the semantic links among words in the Random Forest classifier. Our second contribution is "IGLM" (Interactive Generic Learning Method). It is a new interactive approach that recursively updates the classification model by considering the new data arriving over time and by leveraging the user intervention to correct misclassified data. An abstraction method is then combined with the update mechanism to improve short text quality. The experiments performed on these two methods show their efficiency and how they outperform traditional algorithms in short text classification. Finally, the last part of the thesis concerns a complete and argued comparative study of the two proposed methods taking into account various criteria such as accuracy, speed, etc

Full textAt the juncture of several languages and idioms - french, english, anglo-irish - and of several domains of research and textual analysis: literature and translation theory on the one hand, stylistics, psychoanalysis and variorum study on the other, this thesis aims at delineating how samuel beckett rewrites his texts when he self-translates them. The corpus, comprising most of the + shorter; texts, both prose and drama, spans the years 1946-1980. The research, which relies mainly on a comparative reading of the twin versions, while revealing the modified topography of the self-translated text, also takes greatly into account the bilingual draft versions which are studied in detail in the annexed document (vol. Ii). After analysing the psychological issues linked to the fact of rewriting in another language, the focus is put on the evolution of beckett's style. As a self-translator, beckett works on the two axes of discourse, sensitive to the rhythmic and aural aspect of his texts. The art of self-translation is a parodic art, as is the author's style: a combinatory art, it is also a disjunctive art; an art of inflexion, it relies upon a droll humour as well as on a harsh pessimism; an art of lessening, it prefers to be laconic, while liking to create a rich discordant polyphonic language with foreign accents, keen on contradiction, word-play, and cliche. This paradoxical economy follows the lines of a schizomorph structure. It is that of the freudian unconscious which surfaces in the discourse of a psychotic subject. Thus, each text exists conjointly with its double, offering two displaced, de-centred visions of the ego and of its relationship to the outer world and to himself. That is why it is possible to say that this poetics of self-translation (meaning + way of doing ;) defines a poetics of translation of the self (meaning + motif ; and + operating programme ; of the writer). In a state of helplessness, beckett's narrators keep stumbling on the signifiers of madness and death. Even if they happen to approach them through repetition in the other language, they part from them inevitably, to and fro at each new version of the texts, experiencing the gist of tragedy

Full textIf french schools want all students to succeed, whether they come from advantaged or disadvantaged backgrounds, they must give them as early as possible the intellectual tools to understand themselves, others and the world through the construction of this school knowledge. The main objective is to identify ways to stop the inexorable construction of school inequalities and differences in efficiency linked to access to school knowledge. This research is based on the hypothesis that if it is possible to identify variables, components in the teaching activity that can in certain situations have a greater impact on student's progress and performance in reading and listening comprehension than others, which may be able to explain the variability in student's acquisition, it means that the school could be able to fight against social and cultural disparities. It would no longer be a mere revealing factor but would play a role in improving student learning. It would therefore be possible to make all students succeed in reading or hearing texts regardless of their background.Qualitative and quantitative variables are emerging. The links between the quantitative variables are studied using the Spearman correlation coefficient which measures the strength of the correlation and also indicates its direction. And the links between a qualitative and a quantitative variable are studied by a Student test or a non-parametric Wilcoxon test. All the results presented by this doctoral research highlight certain variables capable of having a significant effect on pupils' progress. These are :- the amount of time spent teaching on comprehension skills and language study,- open-ended, lexical, syntactic and elocution questions for elucidation of meaning and study of language- and treatment of error. This statistical work then reveals the existence of certain combinations that are better able to have a significant effect on student progress and to identify practices that would be characteristic of key didactic options. The treatment of error is one of the fundamental elements of the learning process. It is a structural component, the key variable that can explain the didactic configurations in the relative progression of students' performance in understanding texts read or heard. The doxa, according to which there is a hereditary fatality to social and cultural inequalities, can again be denounced in the light of these results

Full textWhat is the nature of the Mathematics which are taught in secondary education classes (pupils from 12 to 18 years old)? How far does it impair learning mathematics like teachers dream them ?The taught matter shows the features of a text, of a scriptural form showing up differences with the oral form of a society without writing. The formulation of definitions appears to be a powerful tool to perform this analysis. Empirical investigations reveal through four tensions, how hardly the teachers bring their pupils into the learning of a mathematical theory. The analysis of the various ways to validate what they teach leads to show in what serious difficulties is today the teaching of mathematics. A remedy could be the learning of idiomatic competence.

ABSTRACT - Anaemia, defined as a decreased in total red blood cell (RBC) count, haematocrit (HT), or haemoglobin concentration (Hgb), is the most common hematologic abnormality encoun tered in veterinary clinical practice and can be the cause of disease or a marker of underlying disease. Regarding the pathophysiological mechanism that causes anaemia, these are essen tially of three types: loss, destruction, and decreased production of RBCs. Anaemias can be classified based on the bone marrow response into regenerative and non-regenerative. The aim of this study was to classify anaemias in a more simple, practical, and objective way, relating: the complete blood count, the evaluation of the erythrocyte morphology in the blood smear, the reticulocyte count (manual and automatic) and finally the rapid osmotic fra gility test (ROFT). The study included 35 dogs with anaemia, of which 54,3% (n=19) had non-regenerative anaemia, and 45,7% (n=16) had regenerative anaemia. Regarding the erythrocyte indices, half of the dogs (FR=50,0%) with regenerative anaemia and most of the dogs (FR=84,2%) with non-regenerative anaemia had normochromic normocytic anaemia. In dogs with regenerative anaemia, it was found that with an increase in the severity of anaemia, there was an increase in reticulocyte response, although there was not a statistically significant difference (p=0,6758). A greater occurrence of anisocytosis was observed when anaemia was regenerative than in cases of non-regenerative anaemia (pFisher=0,014). Regarding the relation between RDW and anisocytosis, a ROC-curve was obtained, which indicated an RDW value of 15,6%, with a sensitivity of 95% and specificity of 60%, very different from the cut-off provided by the ProCyte Dx haematology analyser of 21,7%, with sensitivity of 10% and specificity of 100%, which proves that the latter may lead to an underdiagnosis of anisocytosis. No correlation was found between the regenerative response of anaemia and the ROFT (p=0,700), and only 22,9% of the dogs under study had a positive ROFT, although none had a diagnosis of immune-medi ated haemolytic anaemia. When comparing the manual and automatic absolute reticulocyte count (MaRetC and AaRetC) we conclude that the two methods are equivalent. And probably, the AaRetC produces higher results than the manual count. Although automatic laboratory tests are faster, avoid inter-observer variation, and pro vide useful information for determining the cause of anaemia, it is important for clinicians to be aware of their limitations, and not neglect the observation and evaluation of the blood smear.

Full textThis research investigates the impact of using a computer-based concept mapping tool on text understanding in the context of distance learning in higher education. To explore this issue, we first review research on learning with mindtools and symbolic external representations. Our theoretical framework is based on a deep analysis of the concepts of pragmatic mediation and of cognitive skills based on Rabardel’s (1995) theory of instrument-mediated activity and the works of Piaget. To define the notion of epistemic mediation, we conducted a historical analysis of the concept of mediation in Vygotsky’s socio-historical theory. This analysis shows the internal coherence of his materialistic and dialectical theory of mediation of consciousness and the importance of his hypothesis of private speech in psychological research on conceptual thinking. We also consider Piaget’s position on the act of conceptualisation. With this framework, we conducted a microgenetic study of the concept mapping activity of students registered in an online course at Télé-université (Montréal) using a knowledge modeling tool (MOT). We videotaped the students’ activity and their consecutive verbal reports. Data shows the transformations of the external and internal activity structures induced by the use of the tool. The students’ difficulties to restructure the immediate meanings are clear in the analysis. Finally, dialectics exist between the form and the content of the text and the representational properties of the tool

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to study - through the analysis of a manuscript that contains a course of ‘natural philosophy’ thought out and prepared for students - the incidence and the significance of the Cartesian philosophy in Rome at the end of the XVIIth century. The manuscript 2094, which is preserved in the Library Casanatense of Rome, contains part of this course, written in 1689-1690 by Vitale Giordani (1633-1711), professor of mathematics in the university ‘Sapienza’. The interest of this script comes from the fact that it was the first Italian translation – even if incomplete – so far known, of physiological works of Descartes, Description du corps humain, Homme, et Passions de l'âme, as well as, considering the whole course, Principia philosophiae, Dioptrique, Météores et Meditationes de philosophia prima. These translation document – and this is the aim of the thesis – the penetration of Cartesian philosophy in Rome, that must be inserted with Naples, as the center of circulation and diffusion of the Cartesianism in the Modern Age. The course demonstrates the need to spread the texts of Descartes, translating and constituting a textbook on which to base the teaching of modern natural philosophy. The thesis is divided in two volumes of which the first is devoted to the analysis of the manuscript, situating the work and the author in the context of roman studies, while the second includes the annotated edition of the manuscript

Full textTaking into account the semantic aspect of the textual data during the classification task has become a real challenge in the last ten years. This difficulty is in addition to the fact that most of the data available on social networks are short texts, which in particular results in making methods based on the "bag of words" representation inefficient. The approach proposed in this research project is different from the approaches proposed in previous work on the enrichment of short messages for three reasons. First, we do not use external knowledge like Wikipedia because typically short messages that are processed by the company come from specific domains. Secondly, the data to be processed are not used for the creation of resources because of the operation of the tool. Thirdly, to our knowledge there is no work on the one hand, which uses structured data such as the company's data to constitute semantic resources, and on the other hand, which measure the impact of enrichment on a system Interactive grouping of text flows. In this thesis, we propose the creation of resources enabling to enrich the short messages in order to improve the performance of the tool of the semantic grouping of the company Succeed Together. The tool implements supervised and unsupervised classification methods. To build these resources, we use sequential data mining techniques

Full textThis purpose of this thesis is to study collocational phenomena in order to analyze the genre "judgement" and the text typology " judgement of the Cour de cassation", the highest court in the judiciary of some civil law countries. By Adopting the definition of collocation theorized by corpus linguistics and John Sinclair (1991, 2004), the research determines the values words take in their specific context in the field of law, and in particular the judicial domain, and their role in the development and progression of the genre and the text object of this study. Data for the analysis were collected from two comparable corpora, made up of judgementspassed by the Cour de cassation in two countries that have this institution at the top of their civil and criminal justice system : France and Italy. In particular, the analysis of the collocation profiles of the field key words, in French and Italian, as well as the findings of the collocational phenomena, colligation, semantic preference and prosody aim at the structure and the organization phases of text. This methodical analysis of the collocational phenomena and of the textual progression inthe two languages results in some observations concerning genre and text translation, with the purpose of underlying the advantages a corpus driven approach can provide to the judicial translator work
