Allred, Michael Kay. "Representations of New Technologies and Related Terminology in Textbooks for Learners of French and Spanish." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2011. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc84160/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to look at the presentation of vocabulary related to new technologies in four French and four Spanish textbooks for first-year university students to examine the relevance of the language presented in terms of its authenticity to French and Spanish as it is used today. The focus is on authenticity to show the correlation between what is presented to students versus what they will need to communicate effectively in ways that are linguistically, socially, and sociopragmatically appropriate with native speakers. The thesis also provides teachers with a pedagogical framework that will help them integrate new technologies and their related vocabularies into curriculum when textbooks fail to do so.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse how mathematical problem solving (MPS) is represented in mathematical textbooks for Swedish upper secondary school. The analysis comprises dominating Swedish textbook series, and relates to uncovering a) the quantity of tasks that are actually mathematical problems (MPs), b) their location in the chapter, c) their difficulty level, and d) their context. Based on an analysis of 5,722 tasks from the area of calculus, it is concluded that the textbooks themselves contain very few tasks that can be defined as MPs, and that those that are MPs are found at the end of a chapter at the most difficult level, and are presented in a pure mathematical context. Implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the representation of Nature of Science (NOS) aspects in 9th grade chemistry textbooks. Two textbooks nation-wide used are analyzed, one of them is written in Turkish the other in English. These textbooks were written according to 2008-2009 education program&rsquo
s curriculum. A qualitative oriented approach was employed and ethnographic content analysis was used as the methodological framework for this research as Irez (2006) has performed. Data were analyzed by means of books&rsquo
sentences. The results of the study revealed that both of two chemistry textbooks were inadequate in representing NOS aspects which are
1. Observation and inference are distinct entities of science, 2. Science is influenced by the social and cultural environment of the scientist, 3. Science is partly the product of human creativity and imagination, 4. Scientific knowledge is tentative, empirical and theory laden, 5. There exists a distinct, non-hierarchical relationship between scientific theories and laws, 6. &ldquo
There is no universal, recipe-like, method for doing science.&rdquo
The frequency of presence of each aspect in books was very low.

Abstract:
Mathematics education is considered indispensible for the improvement of curriculum and education system in each country. Similarly, in order to witness a positive and affective improvement in the curriculum and education system of Afghanistan, Mathematics textbooks have recently been revised by the Ministry of Education. Therefore, it was important to compare old and new textbooks of mathematics from some important learning and teaching approaches. Besides textbook analysis in lower secondary level, this study also analyzed the perceptions of different teachers regarding the recent change in the mathematics textbooks in lower secondary schools in Khost province, Afghanistan. For this study which took place in 15 schools in Khost province, quantitative research method was used. 15 teachers were given questionnaires to fill in with their perceptions about the old and new mathematics textbooks. It was found that new textbooks are better designed than old textbooks according to the teachers’ responses; therefore, all the teachers believed that new textbooks reinforce students’ learning by explaining charts, graphs and diagrams. Conversely, new textbooks are not easy for teachers to successfully teach new textbooks. Hence, it is to a large extent out of students’ cognitive development. Teachers’ responses and perceptions regarding questioning, bringing examples and illustrations are discussed which teachers believed as the key approaches for the improvement of mathematics learning achievement. Additionally, teachers believes about cognitive development of mathematics, design of old and new mathematics textbooks, mathematics concepts and their use in everyday life, contents and use of teachers’ guide of textbooks are briefly discussed in Afghan context. The study contributed to existing knowledge in the area and the findings of the study are debatable because there are many issues and topics about mathematics textbooks to be explored. Different perspectives such as pedagogical and didactical aspects regarding old and new mathematics textbooks were discussed.

Price, Jennifer Lynn. "Textbook Bling: An Evaluation of Textbook Quality and Usability in Open Educational Resources Versus Traditionally Published Textbooks." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3327.

Full text
Abstract:
This mixed-methods study evaluated quality, usage, and perceptions of open educational resources compared to traditionally published textbooks. Because textbooks and other related materials make up a significant portion of educational costs, open educational resources have been explored for potential cost savings at all levels of education. These resources use public domain or open-licensed materials as the content component of free eTextbooks or low-cost printed textbooks. This evaluation explores how teachers and students use textbook resources both in and out of the classroom and the degree to which the content and design of open textbooks compares in quality and value to traditional textbooks. Data came through evaluating the print media design and content quality of the books in a Utah pilot program, analyzing the actual textbook artifacts from students, and conducting teacher surveys and interviews. The data points to clear differences in quality and use between the two types of books. Although the open textbooks are generally a lower quality product than traditional publisher produced textbooks, they were used in unique ways. Teachers who participated in the open textbook development tended to value the book as a resource, leading us to conclude that the ability to customize open resources may be an important determinant of textbook use. However, it is also likely that textbooks have only a minor affect on academic outcomes compared to other more problematic pedagogical and educational policy issues. This evaluation points to the need for additional study on the impact these differences have on learning outcomes.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 221-223.
This dissertation is concerned with a systematic description of the recontextualization of the practices of a textbook, Maths for all Grade 7 Learner's Activity Book, when it is incorporated into grade 7 mathematics teachers' classroom practices. In particular, the research described here focuses on the impact of the textbook on four grade 7 mathematics teachers' classroom practices. My study forms a sub-project of a larger research project which explores the impact of the textbook, Maths for all Grade 7 Learner's Activity Book, in 14 grade 7 mathematics classrooms. The research design of my study comprised two aspects: an analysis of a chapter from the textbook, Maths for all Grade 7 Learner's Activity Book, and an analysis of its use in classrooms. Data collected included a textbook chapter on measurement and the accompanying chapter in the teacher's guide, questionnaires (learner, teacher and school), teacher interviews, video recordings of observed lessons and learner notebooks. Drawing largely on Paul Dowling's Social Activity Theory and Paula Ensor's extension of this work in her study on teacher education, a theoretical model was developed for the analysis of data. The theoretical model was supplemented with theoretical concepts from Basil Bernstein's sociological theory of pedagogic discourse. While the model was developed in relation to the content and use of a specific textbook, the model can potentially be used for other mathematics textbooks or textbooks from other disciplines. Analysis shows that the textbook, which embodies an inductive, exploratory pedagogy, cannot on its own achieve learner's apprenticeship into mathematics, or teacher's apprenticeship into its privileged mode of teaching mathematics. The analysis of the teachers' use of textbook shows that in most cases, the privileged pedagogy of the textbook differed considerably from the preferred pedagogy of the teachers. Most teachers preferred a deductive pedagogy and used the textbook in ways which fragmented the mathematical knowledge presented to learners, reduced the mathematical complexity of the textbook tasks and consequently transformed the pedagogic intentions of the textbook. The research therefore concludes that the transformative role of the textbook needs to be accompanied by teacher development programmes.

Abstract:
Modern textbooks are valuable as a research object in applied linguistics because they usually present their content through multiple semiotic modalities and because in general they are discipline-specific genres. However, concerning the discipline of Biology, there are still few studies that exploit the interaction between verbal and visual languages in highschool textbooks and, up to the moment, no contrastive works on this topic have been published in Brazil. For this reason, the goal of the present study is to investigate the types of visual representations and the strategies that establish the interaction between pictures and verbal text used in two highschool-level Biology textbooks, a Brazilian and a North-American one. This study is based mainly on Kress and van Leeuwen s (1996, 2001) theory of multimodality and is inspired in Myers (1997) and Nascimento s (2002) previous works. This theoretical basis presupposes Halliday and Hasan s (1976) and Halliday s (1997) systemic- functional approach to text. The results of this investigation reveal that, among other mechanisms, lexical cohesion has an important role in the interaction between the verbal element in images and the verbal language of the corresponding texts and captions in both books. Among the differences found between these two books, there are the different visual representations concerning the same topic, the way pictures are referred to in the text, the role of the captions and the proportion of technical terms used in intermodal cohesion. These results show that there are intrageneric variations in the use of such resources that are probably due to the authors purposes. The findings may have important implications for the teaching of Biology and of English for specific purposes. They may enhance the awareness of educators and students about the need of taking the interaction between visual and verbal languages into consideration for the appropriate interpretation of texts and for the production of multimodal texts specific to each discursive community.

Abstract:
In the following essay, a study on three textbooks used for educating pupils in Swedish secondary schools in the subject of English is presented. One aim of the study was to investigate how the selection of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, used for reading and listening comprehension purposes and their respective author representations in three Swedish EFL-textbooks could be considered to represent a broad perspective of the English-speaking world. The categories used to find evidence are based on Kachru’s model of Three Circles of English. Furthermore, an additional aim was to uncover evidence of invisibility- and imbalance and selectivity-biases within each textbook’s content. These biases are originally part of the Sadker et al. framework Seven Forms of Bias. The study results indicate that even though all textbooks provide some examples of the English-language from a global perspective, none manage to present a fully balanced and indiscriminate picture of such. Furthermore, the findings suggest that none of the textbooks succeed in providing learners with an evenly distributed array of texts transpiring in, and authors originating from, countries belonging to Kachru’s inner-, as -and- and expanding circle. Instead, it was found that a majority of texts transpire in, and authors originate from, countries within the inner-circle, which further seem to reinforce the perception of a standard English springing from what is by Kachru referred to as the inner, norm-providing circle. Therefore, based on the findings in this study, it is suggested that further research be carried out. In particular, a more substantial number of textbooks should be analysed in order to ensure that the content of EFL-textbooks used in the Swedish educational system agrees with the standards of the core curriculum for English 5.

Abstract:
Textbooks are a most important feature of teaching mathematics in the classroom, in Sweden as well as in many other countries. For teachers and students, the textbooks often determine what is school mathematics and also what is mathematics. Previous studies on textbooks and the use of textbooks in teaching and learning mathematics raise important questions about textbooks as representations of the curriculum. One important question concerns their role as a link between curriculum and activities in classrooms. In this thesis, some international investigations in this connection are reviewed and analyzed. Moreover, in order to illustrate the role of textbooks as the potentially implemented curriculum, a content analysis of a textbook series, is conducted. The development of the textbook series, a commonly used schoolbook in Sweden, is portrayed in the light of the curriculum development. Some findings from the analysis of the textbooks show that the objective of mathematics, formulated in the national curriculum, are only partially realized.

Abstract:
Comparative research on the treatment of animal materials in Chinese elementary language textbooks and American elementary reading textbooks provides an interesting perspective on both Chinese and American cultures. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. From the study, we notice that animals in Chinese textbooks are presented as animals, i.e., creatures closer to nature without human fantasy and illusion attached to them. Animals are used to communicate to children for moral education, wisdom development and so on. By comparison, animals in American textbooks are presented as much closer to humans. Animals dress and act like humans and are found in human setting. Animals can be more human than humans. Idealistic images and dreams are frequently linked to animals rather than humans. Textbooks are cultural mirrors. The different orientations of animal materials indicateenculturation of children. The cultural reasons beneath these surface differences are examined. Predictions are different cultural values and different goals for the provided on the animal enculturation in future China.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the research question: to what extent does the idea of 'social science' persist in constructing IR textbooks in our contemporary context? In light of the considerable changes in the discipline's canon catalysed by the Third Debate, it is surprising that there has been no sustained engagement with a large body of textbooks in over a decade. The thesis uses a folklorist approach to review contemporary undergraduate IR textbooks by exploring their family resemblances to Donkeyskin and Bluebeard stories. The thesis finds that many contemporary textbooks resemble Donkeyskin stories, both because they employ a problem/choice structure that works to curtail how IR is defined and because they rely on a number of assumptions about what it means to write a textbook and study IR. However, the thesis also finds that there is a limited but notable body of textbooks that resembles Bluebeard stories in terms of how 'forbidden' assumptions about how IR is defined and what it means to write a textbook are confronted. These two readings of textbooks are complemented by a third aspect of the folklorist approach, a reading of framing gestures. While many textbook authors employ framing gestures that cast authors as curators of the field of IR, reinforcing strict boundaries for participation in the negotiation of the IR canon, there are notable exceptions that cast textbook authors as creators. The effect is to demonstrate and open up for participation the process of negotiating the boundaries of what gets to 'count' as IR.

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to determine gender representation in the Lithuanian, British and Argentinian EFL textbooks. To achieve the aim, EFL textbooks circulated in Lithuania (Super English 4), the UK (Speakout) and Argentina (My Life 2) were analyzed with regard to social and linguistic aspects of gender representation. The methods chosen for the study were content analysis and the calculation of the relative frequency of occurrence. The results revealed that the Lithuanian EFL textbook depicts females in a stereotyped way with regard to household duties and frequently uses compound nouns and proverbs or sayings comprising a word man which is used in its generic meaning. Moreover, the content analysis of illustrations in the British EFL textbook revealed that males dominate the labour market. Furthermore, the analysis of verbs used to define gender in the British EFL textbook demonstrated that females are involved in more various mental processes in relation to males. In the Argentinian EFL textbook females are excluded from the field of IT; however, they are not associated with the domestic sphere. In addition, the Argentinian EFL textbook can be treated as the best-balanced textbook with regard to gender-biased use of language. Further studies can examine other aspects of gender representation and cover wider range of EFL textbooks.

Myskow, Gordon. "Evaluative language in history textbooks." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6234/.

Full text
Abstract:
This three-module thesis employs quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate evaluative language in Canadian secondary school and university history textbooks. The first module overviews approaches to the study of evaluation and key issues of historical discourse in need of research. The second module proposes a framework (Levels of Evaluation) for investigating history texts that combines methods from Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory, and Hunston’s (2011) Status, Value and Relevance. The third module further theorizes this framework, employing Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) methods to account for evaluative features of visual texts. The Appraisal framework is also elaborated to include two subcategories of Judgment: Normality, and the Appreciation network is reworked to account for different types of historical significance. Coffin’s (2000) Voices of History framework is expanded to include an intermediary voice between Recorder and Appraiser, which was found to be a salient feature of history textbooks. Key findings include a higher frequency in secondary school than university textbooks of inscribed Attitude, a high overall occurrence of the resources of Affect, and a low overall occurrence of extra-evaluation, the evaluative level concerned with disciplinary engagement. Implications for the study of evaluation in historical discourse and history education are discussed.

s Kappa and the value 0,71 which was found is reliable. The results of this study revealed that the three science textbooks inadequately presented the nature of science categories. It was also found that the percentages of almost all the indicators were under fifty. The textbooks presented the science as authoritative knowledge category relatively higher than the other two categories. The science as the sociocultural construction of knowledge category was portrayed less than the other two categories.

Abstract:
A Socio-scientific issue (SSI) is a controversial issue that engages with both science and society. SSIs are very useful tools in school education since they can improve students’ scientific knowledge and literacy, as well as promote critical thinking. In Afghanistan the curriculum is heavily textbook-driven. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to investigate if and which kind of SSIs, that are used in Afghan science textbooks. Since these textbooks are newly revised it is important to investigate whether the textbooks are in line with recent findings of science education research. A mixed-method approach including both qualitative and quantitative research methods was used. All available 22 science textbooks in all science subjects (i.e. biology, physics, chemistry, geology and health and environmental science) of grade 4-12 were collected for the analysis. First the presence of SSI topics, and thereafter analysis of SSI topics by using the SEE-SEP model as a framework, was carried out. Second the frequency of using an SSI perspective in the textbooks, the distribution of SSI between subjects, topics, grades and school levels was established. Also the inclusion of global respectively local perspectives on SSI issues was analyzed. The result showed that Afghan science textbooks seldom include a SSI perspective since it was found in only 6 % of the textbook chapters. Most of these SSI topics were included in the textbooks of the school subjects’ of biology and health and environmental science, but rarely present in chemistry and physics. Regarding school level the majority of SSI topics were found in upper secondary textbooks, but the proportion of chapters including SSIs were higher in upper primary textbooks. An even distribution between local and global perspectives was found. Concerning the nature of the SSI-topics they referred mostly to issues within science (35%), environment (27%) and ethics (20 %), but reference was made only in few occasions to economy, sociology and policy. Implications for research and education are discussed. As relaying of different subjects areas in afghan science education regarding SSI, found SSI topics in different school grades, levels and various subjects discussed. In the end of this study, besides conclusion I recommend other important aspects of textbooks to be considered in future studies, as maybe there are other features of textbooks which make interesting of further studies. As well as, there are many other science textbooks in different educational level (science textbooks of TTC and university) which are not explored in this research and needed to be analyzed.

Abstract:
This independent degree project investigates the vocabulary profiles in English language learning textbooks used in Sweden, and whether the vocabulary profiles follow the expected levels according to the CEFR and The Swedish National Agency for Education. This was done by a corpus-driven method, as well as a lexical analysis using search tools such as the English Vocabulary Profile, Text Inspector, and Compleat Lexical Tutor. The corpus contained texts from six different textbooks used in year 6, year 9, and in the English 7 course, as well as a number of news articles from The Guardian. The news articles served the purpose of comparing the vocabulary levels in the textbooks for English 7 with the vocabulary levels in advanced written English, which is a requirement for students to be able to understand in order to reach the grade E in English 7. The lexical analysis focused on lexical diversity, word families, word frequency, and the CEFR levels. The results showed that the vocabulary levels in the textbooks were appropriate, but that they might not provide enough challenge for students aiming for the higher grades. Results also showed that the vocabulary levels advanced in relation with the school years. The analysis revealed that between 90 and 97 percent of the vocabulary in the texts were categorized as within the CEFR levels that were expected of each of the school years. Pedagogical implictions drawn from this investigation are that teachers should teach about word families and that they can benefit from using the EVP when providing educational material in addition to textbooks.

Kawano, Madoka. "An analysis of cultural contents of high school English textbooks in Japan." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26851.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted for the following two purposes: 1) to create and test a process by which cultural information in English textbooks in Japan can be analyzed, and 2) to examine what and how much information about foreign culture is taught in English classes in Japan. First, a process was developed from Joiner's evaluation form to gauge the cultural content of EFL textbooks. Action was taken to ensure that the process included both qualitative and quantitative steps. Second, the process entailed an analysis of the cultural content of 10 senior high school English textbooks published in Japan. The process was found to be functional and the analysis revealed that the textbooks were inadequate for the purpose of raising students' cultural awareness. The results of this study may be utilized not only for the improvement of textbooks, but also for future studies which might examine junior high school and college English textbooks.

Abstract:
The aim of this study has been to find out whether the authors of English textbooks in two EU countries, Poland and Sweden, view diversity and promote World Englishes in the same way or whether there are any differences. The attempt has been made to analyse reading texts in the two textbooks for teaching English as a foreign language, a Polish and a Swedish one, in order to see what different Englishes have been promoted there, and to which extent they are represented in both textbooks. For the purpose of this analysis, Marko Modiano´s descriptive model of World Englishes has been used. The study has shown that the Polish textbook focuses mostly on British and American English, and to a great degree on European countries where English is taught as a foreign language. On the other hand, the Swedish textbook promotes both British and American English, as well as major and local varieties of English, but does not mention European countries, except Great Britain obviously, almost at all. World Englishes are present both in the Polish and in the Swedish textbook but the textbook authors take slightly different approaches in promoting them.

Yang, Chi Cheung Ruby. "Gender representation in Hong Kong primary English language textbooks : a study of two widely-used textbook series." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2014. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/70055/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gender equality has long been an issue for gender and language research from as early as the 1970s to the contemporary era in the 2010s, and gender stereotyping in textbooks is an issue in many different countries (Davis, 1995; see also Blumberg, 2007, 2008). While secondary English Language textbooks published in Hong Kong have already been investigated by Lee and Collins (2008), primary English Language textbooks have rarely been investigated (but see Au, 1992; Au, 2004). Therefore, the present study investigates gender representation in two widely-used primary English Language textbook series, Step Up and Primary Longman Express, by examining two subgenres that can be widely found in all language textbooks: reading passages and dialogues, and visuals. In other words, textual (lexis and grammar), discourse and visual representations of gender are analysed. A combination of different methods is used in this study. First, to answer the research question of how gender is represented in the reading passages in the Step Up and Primary Longman Express series in terms of lexis and grammar (Research Question A), content, linguistic and discourse analyses are conducted. Then, pragmatics and conversation analysis are used to analyse how the discourse of male and female speakers is represented in the dialogues in the two textbook series (Research Question B). Finally, to analyse the representation of gender in the visuals in the two textbook series (Research Question C), the method of visual analysis is used. To make sure that the quantitative results obtained are significant, the chi-square test is also used and log-likelihood values are calculated. The results of this study are encouraging in that males and females are represented similarly and fairly, and show an improvement over previous textbook studies in gender representation. In textual representation of gender, at the lexical level, though males were represented more often than females in terms of having a higher frequency of occurrence of node words, nomination, and pronouns when counted as ‘tokens’ in the two series, both males and females were portrayed as having jobs outside home and engaging in household chores (even if only playing a supportive role for males). At the formal grammatical level, the ‘generic’ use of masculine pronouns to refer to human beings in general could not be found in the two textbook series either. As regards gender representation in dialogues, the results vary between the two textbook series and across different dialogue subgenres. Male/female invisibility and domination in dialogues do not exist, and there are no instances of gender stereotyping in the analysed dialogues of the two series. Finally, in visual representation of gender, though males were represented more than females in the illustrations in the two textbook series, the phenomenon of gender stereotyping in terms of occupations and activities engaged in the illustrations in the selected books of either textbook series is not prominent.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate the characteristics of ideal physics textbooks, (2) to investigate the students, teachers, textbook writers, book committee members and science education instructors&rsquo
opinions whether the 9th grade physics textbooks, used in TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), possess the characteristics of an ideal physics textbook, and (3) to investigate how physics textbooks should be used and how they are being used. In this study, &ldquo
Physics Textbooks Evaluation Questionnaires&rdquo
, which were prepared for physics teachers, 9th grade students, National Ministry of Education book committee members, science education instructors and physics textbook writers separately, were used as measuring instruments. The study was conducted with 591 students, 18 physics teachers, 4 book committee members, 3 science education instructors in Magosa and LefkoSa cities in TRNC, and 4 physics textbook writers in 2005-2006 spring semester. The data were analyzed by using frequency analysis. Results revealed that most of the opinions of the participants matched with the literature review in terms of ideal physics textbooks characteristics. In addition, according to most of the textbook writers and book committee members, textbooks, that were analyzed, possessed most of the characteristics of ideal physics textbooks in the nine determined categories. However, according to most of the teachers&rsquo
and students&rsquo
opinions, analyzed physics textbooks possessed most of the ideal physics textbook characteristics in all categories except instructional approach category. Students&rsquo
views on usage of physics textbooks indicated that most of the teachers and students&rsquo
levels of using physics textbooks were almost similar. In addition, all groups of the participants stated that it is necessary to support textbooks with other sources.

Nousia, Fevronia. "Byzantine textbooks of the Palaeologan period." Thesis, Royal Holloway, University of London, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.582570.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is a study on Greek textbooks used by students and teachers in secondary education in Byzantium. The bulk of the source material belongs mainly to the thirteenth-fifteenth century and therefore the thesis concentrates on the Palaeologan period. It examines methods and techniques used by teachers to inculcate knowledge and the Hellenic tradition to the students, and in addition it explores aspects of composition and copying of textbooks by teachers and professional scribes. Though published sources have been used extensively in our research, the core of the thesis is based on unpublished material preserved in major libraries in Europe. The thesis comprises an Introduction, four Chapters (I-IV) and a Conclusion. The Introduction presents the aim and scope of the thesis, previous scholarship, the methodology adopted and the material investigated. Chapter I discusses the Hellenistic foundations of Byzantine education and examines in a comparative approach the evidence from the Byzantine period. It discusses the structure and content of Byzantine education, innovations and changes brought about as well as elements of continuity, placing emphasis on secondary education. Chapter 11 examines and analyses the material contained in the extant textbooks dated or datable to the Palaeologan period, in particular schedographies, the principal method used by Byzantine teachers for the teaching of grammar between 11 th_1Sth c. Chapter III examines three textbooks containing Homer's Iliad copied by the late fifteenth- century scribe Michael Lygizos, as well as textbooks with Sophocles and Euripides. Chapter IV is devoted to Greek textbooks with scholia in Latin for teaching purposes. The Conclusion summarizes the findings of the research and raises questions for further investigation. Appendices (I-V) contain an editio princeps of Constantine Arabites, napcK(36).aLOv (I); transcriptions of unpublished schede, found in other textbooks (11-111); Moschopoulos's grammatical sources in his Ilep! ~Xd5C;;v as edited by Stephanus (IV); and information on Michael Lygizos with a palaeographical description of his manuscripts containing the Iliad (V). The thesis closes with full bibliography and Plates with selected folios of MSS cited.

Aftab, Asma. "English language textbooks evaluation in Pakistan." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3454/.

Full text
Abstract:
This multidimensional study comprehensively explores the English language textbook situation in Pakistan in five stages utilizing mixed methods approach. Two preliminary stages were small scale – a survey of the English language requirements and interviews of the officials involved in sanctioning and publishing textbooks. The main stages were the critical examination of the English curricula and syllabi, the survey of the views of the textbook users, and the detailed coursebook evaluation. The evaluation criteria checklists and questionnaires employed during these stages were mainly based on the materials development, ‘needs analysis’ and curriculum design literature. The research highlighted shortcomings in the overall educational arena and these weaknesses are assumed to be indirectly responsible for the poor standard of English prevailing in the country. The curriculum and textbook policies were found to be inadequate. Generally the teachers/administrators lacked critical, in-depth and practical understanding of language learning objectives, teaching techniques, syllabus design, and materials. By and large, the coursebooks overwhelmingly relied on controlled and artificial activities to teach English. In conclusion, suggested improvements in the curriculum development process, teachers and textbook writers training programmes and, importantly, the prescribed coursebooks can in the long run aid in facilitating English language acquisition in the Pakistani learners.

Abstract:
As our world becomes increasingly globalized, the value of understanding cultural diversity is perhaps more relevant than ever. Furthermore, since English plays an important role in the encounters between members of different cultural contexts, analysis of EFL teaching materials is a matter of importance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how two Swedish EFL textbooks represent cultural diversity. To achieve this, it aims to answer the following research question: To what extent do the textbooks represent cultural diversity within the framework of English as an international language? To answer the research question, this study uses critical discourse analysis as a method for the evaluation. The results indicate that the textbooks show some tendencies of acknowledging the international status of English by including texts from different countries and cultural settings. However, both books still favor representations of Anglophonic countries. Finally, the results suggest that it is important for teachers who use these books to promote critical reflection of how cultures are portrayed.

Johnson, Gwendolyn Joy. "Proportionality in Middle-School Mathematics Textbooks." Scholar Commons, 2010. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1670.

Full text
Abstract:
Some scholars have criticized the treatment of proportionality in middle-school textbooks, but these criticisms seem to be based on informal knowledge of the content of textbooks rather than on a detailed curriculum analysis. Thus, a curriculum analysis related to proportionality was needed. To investigate the treatment of proportionality in current middle-school textbooks, nine such books were analyzed. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade textbooks from three series were used: ConnectedMathematics2 (CMP), Glencoe's Math Connects, and the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP). Lessons with a focus on proportionality were selected from four content areas: algebra, data analysis/probability, geometry/measurement, and rational numbers. Within each lesson, tasks (activities, examples, and exercises) related to proportionality were coded along five dimensions: content area, problem type, solution strategy, presence or absence of a visual representation, and whether the task contained material regarding the characteristics of proportionality. For activities and exercises, the level of cognitive demand was also noted. Results indicate that proportionality is more of a focus in sixth and seventh-grade textbooks than in eighth-grade textbooks. The CMP and UCSMP series focused on algebra in eighth grade rather than proportionality. In all of the sixth-grade textbooks, and some of the seventh- and eighth-grade books, proportionality was presented primarily through the rational number content area. Two problem types described in the research literature, ratio comparison and missing value, were extensively found. However, qualitative proportional problems were virtually absent from the textbooks in this study. Other problem types (alternate form and function rule), not described in the literature, were also found. Differences were found between the solution strategies suggested in the three textbook series. Formal proportions are used earlier and more frequently in the Math Connects series than in the other two. In the CMP series, students are more likely to use manipulatives. The Mathematical Task Framework (Stein, Smith, Henningsen, & Silver, 2000) was used to measure the level of cognitive demand. The level of cognitive demand differed among textbook series with the CMP series having the highest level of cognitive demand and the Math Connects series having the lowest.

Abstract:
This essay has investigated the use of Shakespearean texts as well as tasks associated with those texts in upper secondary textbooks. The investigation looked at both which texts of Shakespeare’s are most frequent and how students are supposed to work with the texts. Furthermore the textbooks cover 20 years (1995-2015) and as such the study also analysed whether or not the selection and tasks have changed, i.e. whether they remain the same today as they did 20 years ago. The findings indicated that Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet were the two most frequent texts and that the tasks have gone from being individual to focusing on group work. The analysis also showed that while Shakespeare during the beginning of the 20 year period was the most dominant or sole author mentioned, this role has been reduced during more recent years. The conclusions drawn concerning the findings emphasise the syllabi and how they influence the content and format of the textbooks as well as the importance of canonicity.

Hayibor, Bernice Anne. "Analysis of gender bias in home economics textbooks." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29774.

Full text
Abstract:
Three Canadian home economics textbooks currently used in teaching human relationships were examined to explore the ways in which they are or are not contributing to gender equity. The research posed three questions: To whom is the textbook addressed? What are the characteristics of learners assumed by the textbook? and In what way does the textbook deal with gender bias? In each textbook the preface, index, table of contents, photographs, highlighted sections, and content were examined in detail. The texts were compared to determine commonalities. The methodology was adapted from earlier textbook analyses of sex equity which were based on the study of intentions outlined in the preface, photographs, and language. Recent feminist work suggests that studies of bias must consider not only the biological concept of sex but also the social construction of gender which relates to those characteristics, activities, and roles traditionally associated with one sex. The feminist concepts of gender sensitivity and gender balance were used in this textbook analysis. The textbooks were found to contribute to gender equity in five Ways. The first approach, including males, is not adequate because it involves the risk of males and a male perspective becoming dominant. The second approach, using inclusive language, is also inadequate because it involves the risk of masking the differences existing between females and males and the problems arising from gender. Exposing differences and addressing social issues relating to gender are two approaches which may hold promise in contributing to gender equity but in the texts examined were inadequate because the issues were presented as neutral or unproblematic. Encouraging critical thinking was the final approach used in only one textbook and its contribution to gender equity was minimal because critical thinking was applied inconsistently and rarely applied specifically to problems of gender. Gender sensitivity and gender balance require the appropriate use of inclusive and sex specific language, the balanced inclusion of females and males, and detailed, sensitive, and critical discussion of issues related to gender. The findings of this study raise concerns about the analysis of textbooks. Home economics textbooks have the unique challenge of including males without allowing males and a male perspective to become dominant. Overcoming the problems of gender requires sensitivity in exposing gender differences. Neutralizing knowledge and presenting knowledge as factual rather than problematic masks differences and problems arising from them. The findings of this research suggest analysis of textbooks for gender bias should not be restricted to surface features such as explicit intentions stated in prefaces, photographs, and language. Elimination of gender bias requires substantive changes in textbook content.

Abstract

A textbook is a key component in the arsenal of a teacher of English. For this reason, it is of importance that textbooksused in Swedish schools are compliant with the fundamental values of equality, provided in the LPO 94. I will attempt to discover the extent to which English textbooks present males and females in non-stereotyped ways and as equal. I want to provide an overview to show how they deal with gender issues. In addition, I aim at establish whether there are any connection between learning and gender, and whether it hinders the pupil’s language learning.

My analysis will draw on previous research  and theories presented by prominent figures in the field, such as, Butler (1990), Mills (1995), Renner (1997), Ravitch (2004) and Jones, Kitetu & Jane Sunderland (1997)among others. Thereafter, these theories, and my own research will be compared, to and contrasted with the guidelines from the Swedish National Agency of Education.

This dissertation comprises a qualitative critical discourse analysis of two randomly selected textbooks that have been, or are being used, in Swedish secondary schools. For my study, I have chosen Team 8 (1984) and Wings 8 (2000).

In my analyses, a number of different aspects will be taken into consideration, such as the   gender distribution of narrators, main characters and sub characters, as well as the   description of gender/gender roles, and the representation of gender in illustrations. Further, I will study what kind of language is used: the extent to which it is gendered or de-gendered language.  These aspects will be collected quantitatively.

The findings from the analysis show that the language in Wings 8 gives a broad and non-stereotypic view of gender roles, which is in accordance with the fundamental values of LPO 94. However, the illustrations tend to portray males and females in what can be considered as quite stereotypical.

Team 8, on the other hand, contains gendered language and male dominance; women were placed in the background or left out completely.  Therefore, Team 8 would not be deemed to be compliant with the requirements set by the Swedish National Agency of Education today.

Key words: Education, teaching material, Wings, Team 8, gender, critical discourse analysis.

Abstract:
Statistical Content in Middle Grades Mathematics Textbooks Maria Consuelo (Suzie) Capiral Pickle Abstract This study analyzed the treatment and scope of statistical concepts in four, widely-used, contemporary, middle grades mathematics textbook series: Glencoe Math Connects, Prentice Hall Mathematics, Connected Mathematics Project, and University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. There were three phases for the data analysis. Phase 1 addressed the location and sequence of the statistical concepts. Phase 2 focused upon an examination of the lesson narrative, its components and scope. Phase 3 analyzed the level of cognitive demand required of the students to complete the exercises, and the total number of exercises per statistical concept. These three phases taken together provided insight into students' potential opportunity to learn statistical topics found in middle grades mathematics textbooks. Results showed that concepts, such as measures of central tendency, were repeated in several grades while other topics such as circle graphs were presented earlier than the recommendations in documents such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards (2000) and the Common Core State Standards (2010). Further results showed that most of the statistical content was found in a chapter near the end of the book that would likely not be covered should time run short. Also, each textbook had a particular lesson narrative style. Moreover, most of the statistical exercises required low level cognitive demand of the students to complete the exercises, potentially hindering the development of deep understanding of the concepts.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This study analyzed treatment of geometric transformations in presently available middle grades (6, 7, 8) student mathematics textbooks. Fourteen textbooks from four widely used textbook series were evaluated: two mainline publisher series, Pearson (Prentice Hall) and Glencoe (Math Connects); one National Science Foundation (NSF) funded curriculum project textbook series, Connected Mathematics 2; and one non-NSF funded curriculum project, the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP). A framework was developed to distinguish the characteristics in the treatment of geometric transformations and to determine the potential opportunity to learn transformation concepts as measured by textbook physical characteristics, lesson narratives, and analysis of student exercises with level of cognitive demand. Results indicated no consistency found in order, frequency, or location of transformation topics within textbooks by publisher or grade level. The structure of transformation lessons in three series (Prentice Hall, Glencoe, and UCSMP) was similar, with transformation lesson content at a simplified level and student low level of cognitive demand in transformation tasks. The types of exercises found predominately focused on students applying content studied in the narrative of lessons. The typical problems and issues experienced by students when working with transformations, as identified in the literature, received little support or attention in the lessons. The types of tasks that seem to embody the ideals in the process standards, such as working a problem backwards, were found on few occurrences across all textbooks examined. The level of cognitive demand required for student exercises predominately occurred in the Lower-Level, and Lower-Middle categories. Research indicates approximately the last fourth of textbook pages are not likely to be studied during a school year; hence topics located in the final fourth of textbook pages might not provide students the opportunity to experience geometric transformations in that year. This was found to be the case in some of the textbooks examined, therefore students might not have the opportunity to study geometric transformations during some middle grades, as was the case for the Glencoe (6, 7), and the UCSMP (6) textbooks, or possibly during their entire middle grades career as was found with the Prentice Hall (6, 7, Prealgebra) textbook series.

Outdoor education is a promising educational field that can support indoor education and provide benefits beyond the evidentknowledge. Outdoor and indoor education together can formulate the ground for an integrated learning. In Greece, like manycountries, outdoor education and its potential contribution to the learning process have not been clearly and intentionally testedyet, even though the country tends to follow a progressive educational philosophy. This research focuses on the subject ofmathematics and explores the connections between the existing philosophy and practices of mathematics education in Greece andoutdoor education theory and practice. Following the method of content analysis, the connections were identified through theexistence of basic outdoor education concepts in the mathematics textbooks of the last three grades of primary school. Althoughthe expectations, because of the lack of personal experiences, could not be high, the application of outdoor education seems to befar from impossible in Greece. It could rather flourish even without any changes in the books, when its potentialities are realizedby the teachers.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the growing popularity of electronic textbooks (e-textbooks) in academia, it is important to evaluate the educational value of such textbooks and whether users can interact with the interface. The problem identified in this study is how to effectively use e-textbooks in a four-year undergraduate business curriculum to facilitate student learning. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the educational usefulness of etextbooks. The secondary goal was to evaluate the user interface usability of e-textbooks. Two methods of evaluation were used in this study. A web-based survey was used and the sample included current student users of e-textbooks in a variety of business topics in four-year undergraduate business schools. Survey requests were provided to instructors identified as using e-textbooks, who forwarded the survey to the students. There were 166 student responses to the web-based survey. A user review was used and included a "think-aloud" method of evaluation in which participants were asked to perform tasks with one business e-textbook and complete a questionnaire. The participants used included seven undergraduate business students enrolled at Southern Oregon University in a business course in which an e-textbook was used and presented in the Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 format. The investigator expected to provide insight to what ways e-textbooks enable students to meet learning objectives. The web-based survey results showed students are satisfied with the criteria presented and deemed important in evaluating the educational usefulness of e-books. A key finding in the web-based survey was the dissatisfaction that users reported on the ability to edit, mark and annotate when using e-textbooks. These features are considered to be important assets in promoting the use of e-books. The investigator also expected to provide insight to what ways e-textbook interfaces make possible the performance of the tasks required of students. The user review results showed students are satisfied with the criteria presented and deemed important in evaluating the user interface usability of e-books. A key finding in the user review was that users sought paper book metaphors for finding information in the e-textbook that were not available.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to investigate how gender and sexualities are represented in a sample of Swedish EFL textbooks in order to explore how EFL textbooks convey and include democratic values according to the curriculum. The analysis is done by a close reading of three selected EFL textbooks: Blueprint, Echo: Main Issues, Viewpoints 1 in order to study how gender and sexuality representation appears in implicit and explicit ways. The theoretical framework of analysis uses gender theory and queer theory with the emphasis on gender norms and heteronormativity. The results of the study show that the textbooks write explicitly on gender equality and awareness for women but lack the perspective on the inclusion of men. Gender norms and stereotypes are evident in the implicit representation where men are portrayed as aggressive whereas women are presented in mental health contexts. Sexualities other than heterosexuality lacks visibility in the textbooks. The findings show that heteronormativity is apparent throughout the textbooks in its representation of romantic relationships. In conclusion, the textbooks represent some social issues regarding gender norms and sexuality but continue to maintain attitudes that does not correspond with the fundamental democratic values of the Swedish curriculum.

This study is based on a comparative qualitative analysis of religion textbooks in elementary schools. The aim is to investigate how Muslim women have been represented in religion textbooks used as educational material in Swedish schools, between the 1970s and the 2000s. This study rests on the social constructivist theory which implies that reality is what we make it. In order to do a comparative qualitative analysis, three deductive stereotypes have been applied: the oppressed, the submissive and the uneducated. However, an additional, inductive stereotype was identified during the analysis of the material: the independent. The text analysis showed that Muslim women were mostly represented as oppressed and submissive, having no right to their own opinions, lives or bodies and simply needing to be covered to get accepted by the Muslim society. However, it was also possible to conclude that similar representations of Muslim women could be found in textbooks from the 1970s and 2000s.

Gustafsson, Tova. "Acquiring Pragmatic Knowledge through Textbooks : Explicit Teaching of Speech Acts in EFL Textbooks in the Swedish Upper Secondary School." Abstract:
Previous studies in the field have suggested that speech acts are underrepresented in EFL textbooks and that, in addition, these tend to have little or no presentation of meta-pragmatic information. In relation to these findings, the present study investigated the extent and manner in which speech acts are presented in EFL textbooks currently used in the Swedish upper secondary school. The focus was limited to explicit teaching of speech acts and, thus, does not present any information or findings concerning implicit teaching of speech acts or to what extent this is presented in the textbooks. The findings showed that the four textbooks examined provide limited presentation of speech acts and that, when presented, little or no meta-pragmatic information is included, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. To begin with, the findings of the present study show that, on average, speech acts cover less than 1% of the content in the four textbooks examined, providing students with very little opportunity for frequent repetition and to acquire knowledge about speech acts through these textbooks. Moreover, the findings show that the range of speech acts presented in the textbooks is rather low, presenting only 8 different speech acts in total between the books, which compares rather well with the findings of Nguyen (2011: 21) who, as mentioned in Section 6.1, also found 8 distinct types of speech act presented in EFL textbooks designed for courses for more proficient students. Further on, the manner in which these are presented is problematic. Two manners of presentation were identified: speech acts were either presented in lists of useful phrases or integrated as examples of phrases to use within a written assignment. The speech acts presented as useful phrases were listed according to level of formality and the integrated examples provided, to some extent, contextual information concerning the gender and status of an addressee. However, this is the extent to which meta-pragmatic information is presented. No textbook provides any explanation as to why some speech acts are more formal than others or why one phrase may be better suited than another. Subsequently, the findings of the present study have implications for teachers and learners using the textbooks for the purpose of teaching and learning EFL. As the findings suggest that speech acts are underrepresented in Swedish EFL textbooks and that, once mentioned, there is still a lack of meta-pragmatic information on these, such information must be provided in the teaching elsewhere. This can mean a number of things. For one thing, it could mean that textbooks need to be further developed, providing a wider range of speech acts presented and including more metapragmatic information. It could also mean that, in the meantime, teachers need to find alternative ways of incorporating speech acts and information on these, so that students are given the opportunity to acquire this language feature elsewhere.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers&rsquo
ways of using mathematics textbooks while planning the lesson and during the lesson, to document teachers&rsquo
views about elementary students&rsquo
usage of mathematics textbook during the classroom time and for their homework and teachers&rsquo
views about mathematics textbooks&rsquo
characteristics. A case study was conducted in a private elementary school with more class hours for mathematics and six mathematics teachers teaching 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade mathematics in this school participated. Data were collected in the spring semester of 2010-2011 academic year through an interview protocol with 16 main questions addressing teachers&rsquo
mathematics textbook usage and students&rsquo
mathematics textbook usage developed for this study by the researcher through the findings and discussions in the literature. Data analysis was conducted through qualitative methods. The findings of this study showed that participant teachers expressed both positive and negative views about characteristics of textbook and usage of textbook. All of them stated that the textbook was their main tool for lesson preparations and teaching. They followed the curriculum from textbook and decided what to do, how to do, and when to do. Participants underlined that textbook was an effective helper but it needed improvement in many aspects. The findings also showed that teachers viewed that students did not use their textbook efficiently. All of the teachers expressed that students did not prefer to study from textbook if there were not any assignment or homework. Teachers specified that students could improve studying habits from textbook if teachers could direct them efficiently. The findings of this study might be useful to prepare more effective lessons for teachers, to give ideas to teachers for guiding their students for effective textbook usage, and to increase the quality of textbooks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare selected sixth, seventh and eighth grades mathematics textbooks from Turkey, Singapore and the United States of America and explore their implications for presenting same opportunity to learn to the students at the same grade level. In this study, the selected books were analyzed in terms of whether they included perimeter, area and volume topics, how they presented the topics on the basis of the selected features and the complexity of to-be-solved mathematical problems related to the topics. Some similarities and differences were observed among the textbooks. It was found that the Turkish textbooks are inclusive in terms of subtopics related to perimeter, area and volume. However, the number of pages dedicated to present the topics is the highest in the Singaporean textbooks. That is, in comparison to the Turkish textbooks, the Singaporean textbooks include fewer number of subtopics related to perimeter, area and volume, but the subtopics are presented in a more detail manner. These books are also rich in terms of mathematically relevant illustrations that make the topics more understandable for students. While the U.S textbooks benefit heavily from technology to present the topics, especially by using three-dimensional shapes
the Turkish and Singaporean textbooks do not make use of technology. The textbooks do not show a difference in terms of complexity of to-be-solved problems. Since all of them mostly include the problems with moderate complexity. Despite there is not any difference among the textbooks in terms of the complexity of to-be-solved problems, there is a difference in terms of the number of to-be-solved problems in the textbooks. The Singaporean textbooks encompass more to-be-solved problems compared to others. The study was concluded by providing some useful suggestions to cover the perimeter, area and volume topics in a way that makes students&rsquo
learning easier and to present same opportunity to learn to the students.
