Nencioni, Francesca, ed. A Giuseppe Dessí. Lettere di amici e lettori. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6453-031-4.

Abstract:
This book, the result of a lengthy labour of cataloguing and research, continues the indexing and recording of the unpublished epistolary material conserved in the Dessí fond, launched in 2003 by Chiara Andrei with the edition of the family correspondence (Firenze, FUP). Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori. Abstract:
Information retrieval (IR) involves retrieving information from stored data, through user queries or pre-formulated user profiles. The information can be in any format. IR typically advances over four broad stages viz., identification of text types, document preprocessing, document indexing, and query processing and matching the same to documents. Although NLP has a role to play in IR, the procedural complexities of the latter impede determination of the stage of incorporation of the former into the latter. Earliest attempts at connecting NLP with IR, were extremely ambitious, proposing concepts instead of terms, as complex structures, to be compared using sophisticated algorithms. In its current state, IR still comes in handy, to retrieve information from various thesauri and ontologies, both in general-purpose lexical databases, as well as those categorizing knowledge in particular scientific and trade domains. However, NLP has yet to prove a better compatibility with IR, in enhancing the latter.

Berber, Stevan. Discrete Communication Systems. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198860792.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book present essential theory and practice of the discrete communication systems design, based on the theory of discrete time stochastic processes, and their relation to the existing theory of digital communication systems. Using the notion of stochastic linear time invariant systems, in addition to the orhogonality principles, a general structure of the discrete communication system is constructed in terms of mathematical operators. Based on this structure, the MPSK, MFSK, QAM, OFDM and CDMA systems, using discrete modulation methods, are deduced as special cases. The signals are processed in the time and frequency domain, which requires precise derivatives of their amplitude spectral density functions, correlation functions and related energy and pover spectral densities. The book is self-sufficient, because it uses the unified notation both in the main ten chapters explaining communications systems theory and nine supplementary chapters dealing with the continuous and discrete time signal processing for both the deterministic and stochastic signals. In this context, the indexing of vital signals and finctions makes obvious distinction beteween them. Having in mind the controversial nature of the continuous time white Gaussian noise process, a separate chapter is dedicated to the noise discretisation by introducing notions of noise entropy and trauncated Gaussian density function to avoid limitations in applying the Nyquist criterion. The text of the book is acompained by the solutions of problems for all chapters and a set of deign projects with the defined projects’ topics and tasks and offered solutions.
