McGlynn, Joseph. "More connections, less connection: An examination of the effects of computer-mediated communication on relationships." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5449/.

Full text
Abstract:
The impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on relational behavior is a topic of increasing interest to communication scholars (McQuillen, 2003; Tidwell & Walther, 2002). One of the most interesting issues that CMC raises concerns the impact of CMC on relational maintenance and development. Using dialectical theory, social exchange theory, social information processing theory, and the hyperpersonal perspective as theoretical frameworks, this study used quantitative and qualitative analyses to identity potential effects of CMC on relationships. Study 1 (n=317) examined the effects of CMC on relational closeness, satisfaction, and social support. Study 2 (n=196) explored the reasons individuals provide for privileging computer-mediated forms of communication, and the perceived effects of using CMC in relational communication. Results indicated that quality of CMC predicted increased perceptions of social support and relationship satisfaction. Results further suggested that CMC enabled participants to manage more effectively relational tensions of autonomy-connection and openness-closedness. Specifically, individuals used CMC to retain higher levels of conversational control, and to maintain greater numbers of relationships with decreased levels of investment. This paper concludes with a discussion of implications and directions for future research.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between adolescents' use of texting and their level of identity development, cognitive autonomy, and self-esteem. One hundred and nineteen Utah State University students participated in this study by filling out a questionnaire that included a section designed specifically to learn the texting habits of the participants, and also included sections derived from previously existing measures on identity, autonomy, and self-esteem. The results show statistical significance of age and texting. Participants who were 23 years+ sent significantly less than those participants who were 19-22 years. Areas of gender, identity, and self-esteem were also analyzed. Implications of these findings for future research were also discussed.

Abstract:
This commentary describes how my compositions in the last four years have been based upon models of human and animal vocal utterances, including both textual and paralinguistic elements, and how they strengthen the connection between text and music especially via synthetic relationships, based on the reproduction of the microscopic sound features of the voices which utter text. The textual elements are projected into the speech domain, thus acquiring uniqueness and including in the composition the aura of the being whose voice is analysed and later re-synthesised by the instruments involved. Varied repetition is used to feature text at multiple levels of enlargement, or filtering stages. All these occurrences of the same textual material have been regarded as nodes of a rhizome, since I conceived them as windows on to plateaux with different temporal scales or filtering processes, all intersecting a clearly defined socio-political plateau. The window form proved very useful for the inclusion of improvisation-based blocks and for the incorporation of elements from previously existing compositions into new ones. The Deleuzian concept of the rhizome created a suitable frame for the main aspects of my research and, since the change of analytical methodology in the course of the portfolio reflects my growing interest in perception, it is my intention to proceed along the path shown by Deleuze and Bergson to investigate the concepts of repetition and memory. Within the portfolio, the socio-political layer is at first determined by the content of the text, but later also by the identity of the person uttering the text and the techniques (s)he uses, so that in one of my compositions I successfully embedded music belonging to a non-Western culture. These trends show a future path for my research – namely, the identification of social differences among individuals and the detection of the traces of trauma through the analysis of their voices.

Abstract:
Electrical connectors are the blocks that connect solar panels together. Whenever a photovoltaic plant commences, the main discussion goes around on solar panels, inverters, charge controllers, etc. But the topic of connectors is usually hardly discussed. Connectors in a photovoltaic system can definitely contribute to improve the overall performance of the system, provided that importance is given while selecting the connectors. The electrical connectors used in photovoltaic systems can be connected in two possible ways. Connectors can be connected either in a pure-connection or in a cross-connection. Male and female connectors from the same brand results a pure-connection (P-C). Male and female connectors from two different brands results in a cross-connection (C-C). There have been discussions in photovoltaic, electrical connector markets and international solar events regarding the risks involved, losses and consequences due to a cross-connection. The main reason behind cross-connections is the unawareness of the installers in knowing the difference between a pure-connection and a cross-connection. Even though the installers are aware of this difference, they are not aware of the consequences of cross-connections. Multi-Contact, a leading electrical connector manufacturer of MC4 photovoltaic connectors affected by the counterfeit products of MC4, due to the sudden boom in the solar market during 2011-12. With the help of TÜV Rheinland, Multi-Contact conducted couple of tests namely temperature increase test and accelerated stress tests to understand the disadvantages of cross-connections. This thesis tried to replicate the tests performed by Multi-Contact in an attempt to understand the test results by using connectors that are used in the Swedish market. Performing temperature increase test and accelerated stress tests on most commonly used connectors in the Swedish market is the main aim of this thesis. The first test, gives an understanding of the temperature variations across various connector sets (four connector sets from various manufacturers used in this thesis) and the latter tests helps to understand the quality of the contact resistance of these connector sets. The four connector set manufacturers used in this test were Multi-Contact (MC), Weidmüller (WM), Blussun solar (BSS) and PBM. The quality of contact resistance of a connector is directly related to the quality of the connector set. During the 20 minutes of the temperature increase test, the connector set from WM performed better than its competitors in the P-C. Whereas, the MC-BSS connector set had performed well in the C-C. The connector type of male MC and female BSS showed its dominance throughout the test. Unfortunately, no conclusions were able to be drawn from this test results due to insufficient information about the test procedure. From the results of accelerated stress tests, the C-C set from MC outperformed its P-C counterpart. All ten connector sets used in this project passed the standard and qualified as connectors with good quality contact resistance. Therefore the best results out of only a P-C connector set does not seems to be completely true. With the standard used in this thesis, it is quite difficult to judge the quality of connectors. Rather than saying a P-C is superior and a C-C is inferior in terms of quality, there is a need to come up with a new method to evaluate the quality of connectors. Matching the connectors based on their tolerances could be a potential solution to the mismatching problem in connectors.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relationships between cohesion in texts and the meanings of the texts. I analyze hard news texts and the summaries written by competent readers for the texts in terms of nuclei (i.e. the combinations of Process and Medium) (Halliday, 1994), and examine the characteristics of the nuclei that recur in a text and are also considered as important to the meaning of the text. There are two main findings of my present study. The first is that when two or more recurrent nuclei in a text are considered as important to the meaning of the text, the relationship in the lead that holds between the nuclei are also thought of as important to the text's meaning. This finding provides evidence for the claim made by many linguists that the conjunctive relations that hold between the propositions in a passage are important to the meaning of the passage. The other main finding of my study is that when the nuclei that are considered as important to the meanings of the texts in which they occur are found in leads, they have a strong tendency to occur in primary or independent clauses; on the other hand, when the nuclei occurring in leads are however not considered as important to the meanings of the texts in which they occur, they tend to occur in secondary or embedded clauses. This finding indicates that the distribution of information in leads is not random. The propositions in a lead that are important to the meaning of the text in which they occur are often foregrounded in major types of clause, while those that are not thought of as important to the meaning of the text are often backgrounded in minor types of clause.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to describe from a didactic point of view how teachers work with reading aloud and reading comprehension strategies. This is based on the fact that if the teacher does not always involve reading strategies in reading that develop students' reading comprehension, it can lead to reading difficulties. At the end of third grade, a goal is also for pupils to have developed a basic reading comprehension. There is also a lack of research on Swedish reading education. In this study, the following questions are based:  What reading comprehension strategies does the reading aim to develop among pupils and how do teachers reason about their teaching?   Do teachers use a working material when they teach reading aloud, and how do teachers reflect on it?  The survey is based on observations and an interview and teachers' speech documents. The theoretical framework of the study builds Barbro Westlund's teori on reading aloud and reading comprehension strategies. The results of the survey show that the reading is a working method and reading comprehension strategies are included. Teachers need to discuss new word meaning and let pupils predict what the text will be about by looking at the title and the book's illustrations. The teacher should allow pupils to summarize and discuss questions that the text may have raised with the pupil. The pupils should also be involved by connecting the text to their own experiences and answering thought-developing questions. This can make it easier for the teacher to start reading on the basis of a work material that has a clear connection to reading comprehension strategies in order to be able to conduct a teaching where more pupils develop a basic reading comprehension at the end of year three.

Abstract:
This study explores Norman Myersâs concept of the âhamburger connectionâ as a form of ecologically unequal exchange, where more-developed nations are able to misappropriate the environmental costs of beef consumption to less-developed nations. OLS (ordinary least squares) regression is used to test if deforestation in less-developed nations is associated with the vertical flow of beef to more-developed nations. An interaction term is also used to test if this relationship is more pronounced for Latin American nations, as posited by Myers. The sample includes all non-desert, less-developed nations for which there is available data across all indicators and for either measure of deforestation, total forest change or natural forest change. Overall, the results confirm the tested hypotheses. The findings also provide unique contextual support for ecologically unequal exchange theory by analyzing the environmental impacts of export flows for a specific commodity type, beef.

Johnson, Sunni. "Struggling Middle School Readers Learning To Make Intertextual Connections With Texts." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2011. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc103338/.

Full text
Abstract:
When people read, they often make connections to their lives, the world, and other texts. Often, these connections are not overt, but are a thinking process invisible to observers. The purpose of this study was to explore the intertextual connections struggling middle school students made as they read multiple topically-related texts to build knowledge, through observation of discussions, surveys, and interviews with students. The students received 30 lessons based on the constructivist model of comprehension. Data sources included observations during the delivery of these interactive lessons and surveys regarding their connections, their use of the connection strategies in content area classes, and their knowledge of the topic. The observations and surveys were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Information rich cases were developed from these data, as well as from interviews with selected students. Although the students were considered struggling readers, they did not respond to the instruction as stereotypical struggling readers. They were engaged, and they led discussions and shared connections with the class. The students demonstrated they learned to make connections and more text-to-text or intertextual connections overall. The students made connections when interested in the topic and had opportunities to discuss the texts. Finally, the students sometimes made connections in content area classes with opportunity in those classes. The study has implications for theory, future research, and practice of teachers and library media specialists.

Kozlova, Inna. "Studies on Airway Surface Liquid in Connection with Cystic Fibrosis." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för medicinsk cellbiologi, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-9358.

Full text
Abstract:
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common fatal inherited diseases, most prevalent among Caucasians. CF is caused by a mutation in the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which helps to create sweat, digestive juices, and airway surface liquid (ASL). The airways are covered with a thin layer of fluid, the airway surface liquid, in which the cilia bathe. Defective or absent CFTR leads to a defective water and ion transport in the epithelial cells, which results in viscous mucus, defective ciliary clearance, bacterial inflammation and tissue damage. The volume and composition of ASL are important in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis and it is therefore relevant to determine its composition. However, there are a number of difficulties in determining the ionic composition of the ASL due to its small volume. Literature data vary from very hypotonic to markedly hypertonic. These controversial data inspired the development of a simple method for determining the elemental composition of the ASL in different animal species and humans. Two techniques were developed to determine the composition of ASL, from which indirect information on chloride transport in airway epithelium can be obtained. In the first method, tissue is removed from the animals under anesthesia, frozen and analyzed in the frozen-hydrated state. In the second method, the ASL is collected with small dextran (Sephadex) beads; the dried beads are then analyzed by X-ray microanalysis. The Sephadex-bead method appears more accurate compared to the frozen-hydrated samples. Both methods were applied to collect tracheal and/or nasal fluid in pigs, normal and transgenic cystic fibrosis mice, the fluid covering the apical surface of normal bronchial cells (16HBE14o-) and a cystic fibrosis human bronchial cell line (CFBE41o-), and finally nasal fluid in healthy and diseased subjects. The ionic composition of the ASL was isotonic both in pigs and healthy human subjects. CF patients had much higher levels of Na and Cl ions than healthy subjects. The ASL under control conditions was hypotonic in mice and cell cultures, whereas the concentrations of Na and Cl ions in the species with the ΔF508 mutation or absent CFTR were significantly higher than in the corresponding controls. It was also demonstrated that the ionic composition of the ASL can be influenced by pharmacological treatment. The study confirms earlier findings that CFTR also is involved in bicarbonate transport. Mist tent therapy has been tested in the study of a treatment for CF patients, in order to hydrate the viscous mucus. But the effect of mist tent therapy on ion concentrations in the ASL appeared to be short-lived, although no patients became chronically colonized with pseudomonads while on nocturnal mist tent therapy.

Williams, Lindsay. ""Their Mutuall Embracements": Discourses on Male-Female Connection in Early Modern England." Thesis, Boston College, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/543.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Caroline Bicks
Routinely recognized as deeply patriarchal, early modern England is an era in which men and characteristics of the male gender are assumed to have held unrelenting sway over their female counterparts. This description is largely justifiable, particularly given the era's legal codes. However, this thesis seeks to enrich discussions on early modern England by examining its male-female relationships through a markedly different lens. By highlighting the close relationships that existed alongside patriarchal mandates in the era - husband and wife, father and daughter, mother and son - a fuller portrait of the period is sketched. Through an examination of how a variety of genres - medical, religious, and dramatic - grappled with moments of union between the two sexes, particularly physical union and its concurrent or resultant emotional bonds, this thesis offers greater insight into how walls to male-female connection were both raised and bridged in the time period

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to analyse theconnection between test results and field claims of ECUs (electronic controlunits) at Scania in order to improve the acceptance criteria and evaluatesoftware testing strategies. The connection is examined through computation ofdifferent measures of dependencies such as the Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’srank correlation and Kendall’s tau. The correlations are computed from testresults in different ECU projects and considered in a predictive model based onlogistic regression. Numerical results indicate a weak connection between testresults and field claims. This is partly due to insufficient number of ECUprojects and the lack of traceability of field claims and test results. Themain conclusion confirms the present software testing strategy. Continuoussoftware release and testing results in a lower field claim and thus a betterproduct.

Halbe, Kedar Ram. "New Approach to Connections Between Members of Adjacent Box Beam Bridges." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64868.

Full text
Abstract:
The adjacent box beam bridges (ABBB) are considered as an ideal solution for short to medium span bridges and for routes with low to medium traffic volumes. The ABBB system has been utilized and is popular in several states in the United States. However, this bridge system has long term durability issues caused by shear key failure and reflective cracking in the topping. The means and methods to alleviate the problems in connections between members of the ABBB were researched and the development of new connection details was pursued. Diagnostic tests to study the in-service behavior of ABBBs was performed. Two bridges with varying magnitude of joint deterioration were investigated. Both bridges were instrumented extensively and were subjected to known loads in the form of tandem trucks. The response of these bridges was studied and conclusions were made about the state of the bridges and the behavior after shear key failure. A finite element (FE) model of one of the tested bridges was developed to study the response of an ABBB with sound joints. The results of the finite element analysis (FEA) were compared with the results of the bridge diagnostic test. Conclusions about the FE model were made on the basis of this comparison. Another FE model, referred as the full scale bridge (FSB) was developed. The FSB model was used to simulate the behavior of an ABBB with the proposed connection details. This FSB model was subjected to design truck loads and the response was studied. The behavior of FSB model was replicated through a three beam sub-assembly that was supported on elastic supports. The stiffness of the elastic supports was calibrated such that the state of stress in the joints and the relative displacements between adjacent box beams in the sub-assemblage matched those in the FSB. The three beam sub-assembly was constructed with the proposed connection details. Two new connection details were proposed in this research. A Kevlar and epoxy connection and a spliced connection with fiber reinforced self-consolidating concrete are proposed. A total of six specimens, with different connection details, were constructed and tested for strength and durability in the laboratory. The behavior of the proposed connections and the connection materials were studied in detail. Additional FEA was performed to study the effect of shrinkage and temperature on the proposed connection details.

Abdullah, Redzuan. "Experimental Evaluation and Analytical Modeling of Shear Bond in Composite Slabs." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/11216.

Full text
Abstract:
The strength and behavior of composite slabs are governed by the shear interaction between the concrete and the steel deck. The interaction property depends on several factors and it is not possible to express the relationship from a purely analytical basis. As such, analysis and design methods available today use the interaction property derived from full scale performance tests. In numerical modeling, the interaction property is obtained from a variety of elemental push off tests which, for the most part, do not represent actual slab bending. This research comprises experimental, analytical and numerical investigations of composite slabs. The central objective of the experimental work is to develop a new small scale test method for evaluating the performance and behavior of composite slabs and also for determining the shear interaction property for use in numerical analysis. The characteristics of the new test specimen are simple, easy and economical to conduct, as well as comparable in performance and behavior with the more common full slab test. The analytical study was conducted to determine whether data from small scale tests can be used in the present analytical methods to predict the strength of the actual slabs, to use the same test data for input in the numerical analysis, and to improve the present Partial Shear Connection (PSC) design procedure. A model that relates the shear bond stress to slab slenderness, which can be used to estimate the shear interaction property for slabs with any slenderness, was developed. Finally, a finite element study was conducted to develop a simple modeling method that is suitable for analyzing composite slabs with variable slenderness. Parametric analyses to determine the effect of slenderness on the performance and behavior of composite slabs, and on the accuracy of the present design methods were also conducted. The results of this investigation demonstrate that the small scale test is feasible as a replacement for the full scale test. Data from the small scale test can be used not only in the analytical methods but also in the numerical analysis, thus eliminating the need for separate push off type tests.

Demirsahin, Isin. "Connective Position, Argument Order And Information Structure Of Discourse Connectives In Written Turkish Texts." Master's thesis, METU, 2008. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12610160/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
A text is a linguistic structure that is more than a random collection of sentences. A text is cohesive (Halliday &
Hasan, 1976) and coherent (Mann &
Thompson, 1987, 1988). Mainly ignored in the field of linguistics until recently, the text and the discourse structure have been inquired from various points of view (Asher, 1993
Asher &
Lascarides, 1998
Grosz &
Sidner, 1986
Mann &
Thompson, 1987, 1988
Webber, 2004). D-LTAG is a discourse grammar work that extends a lexicalized sentence level grammar LTAG (Joshi, 1987) to low-level discourse (Webber, 2004
Webber &
Joshi, 1998). In this framework, discourse connectives such as coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, parallel connectives and discourse adverbials are predicates of discourse structure that take text spans that can be interpreted as abstract objects (Asher, 1993). Turkish has a flexible word order in comparison to languages like English. In English, the discourse adverbials are noted for their ability to occupy positions unavailable to other discourse connectives. In Turkish, word order of other discourse connectives, coordinators and subordinators are not expected to be as restricted. This thesis examines the connective position, argument order and the information structure of five Turkish discourse connectives in their eleven uses. The analyses show that the examined features of discourse connectives are related to the syntactic group the connective belongs to. Discourse connectives of the same syntactic groups exploit similar connective position and argument order possibilities, and they tend to be included in similar information units.

Abstract:
Composite materials hold great potential for the replacement of traditional materials in machines utilized on a daily basis. One such example is within an engine block assembly where massive components inherently reduce the efficiency of the system they constitute. By replacing metal elements such as connecting rods, cylinder caps, or a crank shaft with composite alternatives, a significant increase in performance may be achieved with respect to mechanical strength, thermal stability, and durability, while also reducing mass. Exploration of this technology applied to a connecting rod geometry was investigated through a combination of process development, manufacturing, numerical analysis and testing. Process development explored composite material options based on experimental characterization, fabrication, and machining methods. Finite element analysis provided insight into model and data accuracy, as well as a basis for study on a unidirectional composite I-beam geometry. Destructive testing of the composite connecting rods provided data for a strength to weight ratio comparison with the original steel component. The composite connecting rods exhibited weight savings of 15%-17% that of the steel component. The rod made of woven composite material exhibited an elastic modulus of 68.1 Msi in its linear behavior before failure, thereby exhibiting a higher stiffness than the steel rod tested. Although the failure strengths were 25% below the required design load, the calculated strength to weight ratios showed favor for the composite alternatives.

This thesis presents an analysis of F.C.C.-measured web page loading times as observed in 2013 from nodes connected to consumer broadband providers in the Northeastern, Southern and Pacific U.S. We also collected data for multiple months in 2015 from the MIT network. We provide temporal and statistical analyses on total loading times for both datasets. We present four main contributions. First, we find differences in loading times for various websites that are consistent across providers and regions, showing the impact of infrastructure of transit and content providers on loading times and Quality of Experience (QoE.) Second, we find strong evidence of diurnal variation in loading times, highlighting the impact of network and server load on end-user QoE. Third, we show instances of localized congestion that severely impair the performance of some websites when measured from a residential provider. Fourth, we find that web loading times correlate with the size of a website's infrastructure as estimated by the number of IP addresses observed in the data. Finally, we also provide a set of policy recommendations: execution of javascript and other code during the web browsing test to more adequately capture loading times; expanding the list of target websites and collecting trace route data; collection of browsing data from non-residential networks; and public provision of funding for research on Measuring Broadband America's web browsing data. Mentes, Yavuz. "Analytical and experimental assessment of steel truss bridge gusset plate connections." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42767.

Full text
Abstract:
The I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, MN had a catastrophic failure in the main span of the deck truss in 2007. This collapse has brought significant attention on the gusset plate connections in steel truss bridges throughout the U.S. Steel truss bridge gusset plate design has not received much focus in the past 40 years, and there is a lack of consensus within the design profession on the procedures to evaluate, design, and rate these critical elements. In the short term, based on the best available information on the gusset plate design, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued preliminary guidance. Although some experimental research has been conducted on the ultimate strength of gusset plates, much of this work has been directed toward the performance of tension members and their connections. There has been limited experimental work on the compression capacity and stability of gusset plates, but most of this work is relevant primarily to bracing connections common in building structures. This research focuses on comprehensive experimental and analytical studies on steel truss bridge gusset plate behavior. The studies include comparisons of advanced analytical models with the responses from large-scale experimental tests using discrete and innovative full-field measurements. The calibrated finite element analysis models are then utilized to study a variety of gusset plate configurations. Improved mechanistic idealizations that better capture the observed behavior in the experiments and analytical studies are proposed as the result of this work. The design checks recommended in this thesis present a comprehensive methodology for determining the ultimate gusset plate resistance. This research provides a large database of original results that will be useful for future similar studies. In addition, this research provides modeling procedures that permit the study of steel truss bridge connections and their adjacent framing members using truss bridge sub-assemblies. Based on the comprehensive analytical studies, simple and accurate design calculation procedures to assess the nominal ultimate strength of steel truss gusset plate connections are recommended for steel truss bridge gusset plate connections.

The objective of this research is to analyze the meanings inherent to the use of connective and Scientific Articles/Adapted produced by Basic Education student. For purposes of analysis, Two text versions were selected, prepared in 2011 and 2013, resulting respectively from Project ART (Application and theoretical reflection in the classroom: linguistic analysis as support for the text production of students from a public school in the State of Paraná) and DAT (Diagnostics and Theoretical Application in the Classroom: income verification and evaluation of the teaching of linguistic analysis and textual production of middle school students from a public school in the State of Paraná). From these productions, we organized cuts due to the occurrence of and in which the sense deriving from the connector was different from that conveyed by Traditional Grammar. The proposal of this work resides in the analysis of the connective in the cuts, based on theoreticians such as Quirk and Greenbaum (1987), Neves (2000; 2006) and Corbari (2005), with the purpose of evaluating whether the cutouts accommodate uses of and where it is possible to measure different semantic manifestations of the additive, considering that it is a linguistic element that triggers semantic-argumentative relations not foreseen by traditional grammar, such as cause, explication, conclusion, among others. We verified that, in fact, the e translates semantic possibilities different from those predicted by the Traditional Grammar and that these possibilities can be modified by reason of the textual genre in which the connective manifests and the degree of engagement that the producer of the statement chooses to demonstrate or not.

The present work analyses relations between finance and macroeconomics, aiming to answer how structural changes in duration of bull and bear markets are connected with business cycles. In order to do so, we review the structural change test proposed by Nicolau (2016) and introduce two similar alternatives, which through a Monte Carlo simulation study, show less over-rejection for some data generating processes, proving to be useful in obtaining robust results. We apply the tests to a database consisting on adjusted market capitalization stock market indexes of 38 developed and emerging markets, constructed by Morgan Stanley Capital International. In our results we find several structural changes that seem to be linked to macroeconomic events, furthermore, there is statistical evidence that decreases in duration of bull market cycles anticipate the peak of business cycles.

Abstract:
The current study investigates the use of connectors in three corpora. These are words and phrases such as however and as a result used to signal links between propositions within sentences, between sentences and larger areas if text. The non-native student corpus includes texts written by Thai MA TESOL students. The professional corpus comprises texts referenced in the non-native students' bibliographies. The native student corpus consists of texts volunteered by 11 MA Applied Linguistics or TESOL graduates. These corpora were further divided into sub-corpora based on genres such as Reviews, Research Articles and general Articles, along with Chapters in the professional corpora. The study was designed to investigate the frequency of connectors overall and individually, their positioning within sentences and paragraphs, and the types of connections, intra-sentential, inter-sentential and textual, signalled by these words and phrases. The findings indicate that similar to other studies the non-native students overuse and underuse certain connectors. Connectors occur in particular patterns within sentences and paragraphs dependent on genre and register considerations. A comparison of the forms and patterns of use of thus in three different genres confirms this. The study ends with a discussion of the classification of connectors and implications of the findings for research and pedagogy.

Abstract:
Recently more and more buildings of light structures have been built in Lithuania as well as in other European and world countries. Nevertheless, timber products are not widely used for floors in this share of construction market. Traditional light timber frame floors are characterized by vibrations, acoustic transmission and low fire resistance. The above-mentioned problems can be rationally solved by using timber-concrete composite (hereinafter TCC) floors. In comparison with entirely timber floors such type of floors are characterised not only by increased strength and stiffness but also by increased fire resistance and better sound insulation. In comparison with reinforced concrete floors manufactured of non-regenerative sources TCC floors are lighter and more economic. These characteristics stimulate usage of TCC floors in newly built buildings. It should also be noted that usage of timber in building structures instead of concrete or steel could substantially decrease energy demand and emission of carbon dioxide during production. In this work author presents TCC structural solution when thin-webbed beams (I-joists) used for timber floor beams instead of solid or glued rectangular beams. Thin-webbed beams are without upper flange of structural timber. Embedding in concrete a part of web of oriented strand board (hereinafter OSB) connects the OSB web and the concrete slab. This concept allows to save structural materials and production costs. Nevertheless, not so many... [to full text]

Abstract:
The multi-leaf wall is widely used in ancient masonry structures. The capacity is low due to the weak physical and mechanical properties of the infills and the weak adhesion between leaves. Out-of-plane instability is prone to occur under earthquakes, so it is necessary to reinforce the multi-leaf masonry structure. For experimental study, material characterization and a total number of 20 pull-out tests were carried out. The bond – slip curves of helical connectors inserted in masonry blocks were obtained. Linear regression analysis was performed. The FEA software ABAQUS was used for numerical simulation of the pull-out test. The constitutive law of the masonry was simulated by concrete damaged plasticity model. The complex contact surface between the helical connectors and the masonry is simulated by translator element. Furthermore, a FEA model of single panel of multi-leaf masonry wall was established, considering 7 various configurations of reinforcement, and was subjected to vertical compression and horizontal pushover, respectively. For vertical compression, the transversal connectors effectively control the lateral displacement of the external leaf and reduce the second-order effect, thereby improving the compressive bearing capacity. For horizontal pushover, the transversal connectors strengthen the integrity of the multi-leaf wall. As the reinforcement density increases, its out-of-plane stability is improved. Finally, the Civic Tower of Ravenna, Italy was selected for case study. The vibration modes were obtained by modal analysis, and the design response spectrum was obtained based on Italian seismic code. Pushover analysis was carried out, considering 5 configurations of reinforcement. It was found that the transversal connectors can significantly improve the seismic resistance. As the reinforcement density increases, the failure mode gradually transforms from local overturning of external leaf to shear failure of the side walls.

Abstract:
To achieve structural integrity in precast concrete systems, connections between elements must be capable to transfer both vertical and horizontal loads which puts high demands on single ties. Hollow-core slabs are often used to stabilize the structural system which puts high demands on the connections between the slab and the buildings stabilizing units. Because of this, the connections need to withstand high tensile and shear forces. The purpose of this report is to investigate the tensile capacity of tie-connections used between hollow-core slabs that are parallel with e.g. stabilizing walls and compare with current design methods. Current design methods suggest that tensile failure will occur in the roof and bottom of the cores which provides low design capacities. Two connections are investigated through full scale pull-out tests where the results are compared with the design methods. The results from testing the tensile capacity show that the failure module occurred as suggested. However, the tests show significantly higher capacity than proposed by the design methods. Eurocodes Design assisted by testing are applied to the test result and a new design method is proposed. Both provides design values that are approximately twice as large as the values suggested in previous design methods.

Composite beams of steel and concrete are studied for some time. The mechanism of transfer of longitudinal shear stresses on the interface between the beam and the slab usually occurs by means of shear connectors. In this case, the set of two materials behavior depends on the strength and rigidity of the connector on the interface, being well known for connectors with pin-type head associated with massive concrete slab. However, there is little information on shear connectors with pin-type head associated with hollowcore slab concrete. This study aims to determine, by means of direct shear tests, the resistance of connectors with pin-type head when associated with cellular slab and precast concrete presence of cover concrete. Hollow core slabs are analyzed with two different heights and concrete cover of 40 mm in thickness. Is also varied the strength of concrete fill and rate of shear reinforcement at the link. The results are compared with normative prescriptions and suggestions for other jobs. At the end, we propose the modification of an expression commonly used to evaluate the resistance of stud bolt and alveolar slab so as to adapt it to the situation of cellular concrete slab with hood.

Abstract:
Customized human body models offer a great potential to assess the injury risks in the fields of transport safety, surgery or sport. Various detail levels can then be needed, according to the targeted application. In particular, when the mechanical behavior of biological tissues needs to be accurately reproduced, numerical models have to include information about the structure of the tissue, and model the mechanisms of the response to mechanical loading. The work presented here focuses on the microstructural and mechanical characterization of the human liver capsule, in order to identify the important hypotheses that need to be included in a fibrous tissue constitutive model, based on microstructure. Thus, an experimental methodology has been developed to identify the mechanical behavior of this particular tissue, related with its microstructural organization. Uniaxial tensile tests, as well as bulge tests under a multiphoton confocal microscope have been performed, to observe the microstructure evolution during loading. Macroscopic strain has been assessed, and a method to measure local strain fields has been developed, to quantify the strain state of the fibrous network. The reorganization of the collagen fibers network has also been quantified. An analysis of the links between the measured macroscopic parameters and the microscopic phenomena is given. Therefore, the hypotheses that need to be included in constitutive models are highlighted, with particular consideration given to the affine transformation hypothesis which allows to link the fibers behavior to the global response of the tissue

This study aims to investigate various and multiple viewpoints of scholars, textbook editors, elementary school teachers, and student parents on the connection issue between different editions of elementary school textbooks, so as to submit our conclusions and suggestions. The concrete purpose of this study is double: a) What are the multiple voices of the connection issue of different textbooks? b) How are these voices formed? In order to reach the above purpose, the research method is mainly qualitative method, complementing by quantitative method. The study subjects are three scholars, three editors of school textbooks, 18 elementary school teachers, and five student parents. We adopt interview method of qualitative research. According to the introductory interviews, the researchers compile preliminary questionnaire, which is distributed to 160 elementary school teachers in all the 16 counties and cities in the Taiwan area. The last open-end question allows the answerers to write down their opinions, which are then used as one part of data analysis of this study. Finally, we conduct our analysis and discussion by means of incessant comparative analysis and type analysis. Synthetically, we then produce the conclusions and suggestions of this study. The following are the conclusions we reached: 1. The connection between the formal outlines and the temporary ones of the nine-year-through consistent policy causes various connection problems of different editions years ago. Take math course for example. This course is being narrowed and regulated owing to the formal outlines'' annual details, which, though brings out a converging agreement, still causes some connection problems, though fewer. Even though connection problems remain, teachers should manage to reduce the problems to the minimum when conducting their teachings, so as to make the teachings more favorably. 2. Because of poor understanding towards the present nine-year-through consistent policy curricula outlines, elementary school teachers can not explain the connection problems to the student parents clearly, which makes the latter take dubious stance towards this issue. The nature of elementary school curricula is of the class of starting point of Burner''s spiral curriculum; furthermore, the teaching units are circular through the six years. Thus, the negligent and omitting elements can be redressed to some point. On the other hand, whether students'' learning contents are negligent or not will be redressed by the "feedback loop" to rectify the teaching objects and complement the teaching materials. 3. Elementary school teachers with teaching experience less than five years are mostly inexperienced teachers who don''t understand the curricula outlines. From our interviews we realize that all kinds of selection tests almost never touch issues concerning curricula outlines. Under this vein, the chance to understand the curricula outlines is relatively meager, which is a warning and chasm for elementary teaching staff cultivation curricula. 4. The connection problems of different elementary textbook editions have something to do with the natures of curricula or fields. Curricula of artistic ability have less connection, which might have something to do with having no tests. "Having tests" tops all the connection issues of different elementary school textbooks. 5. The connection issues of different elementary school textbooks manifest the loose joining of "theory and practice" of teaching, which is the chief cause of the long-term negligence of the outcry of elementary school teachers who really do the teachings. On the one hand, the low professional status and image of elementary school teachers partly contribute to the above phenomenon. On the other hand, many elementary school teachers hold the belief that politics is behind education. In the long run, they feel inactive to all the educational issues. 6. Transfer students have to face horizontal transfer of different editions of their textbooks. Various levels of transfer problems occur because of different transfer times during the semester. But connection problems are not unsolvable. The joint cooperation between elementary school teachers and the publishers of elementary school textbooks still can patch up the chasm of connection.

Abstract:
"Ms. Cowhey, I have a text to world connection!"-Gabriella, first grader, is a critical ethnographic account of a highly successful and nationally visible white teacher, and her first grade students who named themselves the Peace Class during the autumn of 2002 when the United States declared war on Iraq. The study examines the teacher's use of critical pedagogy as it relates to Freirian concepts of dialogue and revolution, and her use of critical intertextuality as I call it, and the academic achievement and agency of her students. The teacher, who is the main participant of this study, is committed to issues of equity and academic excellence. She is engaged in an interest convergence that promotes success for the teacher, her students, and the larger school community. Ms. Cowhey is an excellent white multicultural educator and ally. This critical ethnography includes findings from data collected over a full school year of research. The teacher featured in this study retained her students as they looped from first to second grade, providing a rare opportunity for further research. It is a hopeful study with implications for teacher preparation programs, professional development and white teachers who want to gain the understanding and skills needed to respond to a changing demographic landscape and who are committed to social justice issues in education.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the issue of connectors in contemporary French. The first part offers an outline of different approaches to the term connector/connecteur within Czech and Francophone linguistics. Based on the description and comparison of individual authors' approaches classified by the theoretical aspects applied, this part explains functioning of connectors not only within the logical semantic coherence relations, but also within the hierarchisation of utterance content considering the pragmatic dimension of the text. The second part of the thesis defines the term "connector" with respect to the approaches introduced above. The third part of the work deals with the characteristics and function of concessive connectors. It is based on defining the concessive relations, it describes their different aspects of meaning conditioning the relations classification within logical semantic relations in Czech and French and offers a list of linguistic means to express them and at the same time, it stresses the complex functional character of the connectors.

Marreiros, Rui Pedro César. "Precast concrete wall-foundation connection. Development of a seismic dissipative connection." Doctoral thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/13675.

Abstract:
Seismic events are a major factor to consider in structural design of buildings in many countries. With the purpose of saving lives, most of the design codes lead to structural solutions that withstand large seismic actions without collapsing, but without taking into account a possible usage of the structures after the earthquake. As a result, it is necessary to consider the time needed to repair/retrofit the damaged structures (i.e. the downtime) since this period of inactivity may result in huge financial implications for the occupants of the buildings. In order to minimise the damages and simplify repair operations, structural solutions with rocking systems and negligible residual displacements have been developed during the last two decades. Systems with precast concrete rocking walls were studied with the aim of investigat- ing suitable and convenient structural alternatives to minimise the damage in case of an earthquake. Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses on post-tensioned solutions, with and without energy dissipation devices, were carried out in this research. The energy dissipation devices were made from steel angles that were further developed during the research. Different solutions for these devices were experimentally tested under cyclic loading and the results are presented. Numerical and analytical work on steel angles was also carried out. Regarding the concrete rocking wall systems, two concrete rocking wall systems were studied: post-tensioned walls and post-tensioned walls with energy dissipation devices. In the latter, the solution was to fix them externally to the wall, allowing their easy replacement after an earthquake. It is shown that the dissipaters are a viable solution for use in precast concrete rocking wall systems. A building case study is presented. The comparison between a traditional monolithic system and a hybrid solution was carried out, allowing the evaluation of the efficiency of the solution that was developed.

It is very important for a country to possess the electrical power grid with good quality upon which its economy may be well developed. Taiwan as an island is hit each year by multiple typhoons which degrade the power quality. Therefore, more and more power cables to the corporates and houses are implemented underground nowadays in order to prevent possible degradations from happening. Underground cables, however, may run into such problems as termites, bad connections and XLPE power cables’ water tree. These problems will result in the feeder trip during power supply, which in turn induces power outage that causes a huge loss on all users. Since I joined the Hualien Branch of Taiwan Power Company for more than four years, my tasks have often involved the new implementation, maintenance test and repair of cables. During this period, I found that DC HIPORT test equipment could not be used unless both ends of the cable were 500MCM, a type of deadbreak elbow connector. On the third year, this type of connectors was run out and I had to borrow it from adjacent branches. It prompted me to develop a substitute with available materials. So far, the first- and the second-generation of test connectors have been developed and used in the repair of cables on site. The efficiency has been increased and the cost has been reduced accordingly. In this thesis, I investigate the on-site tests of connectors and discuss the cases of underground cables from the Hualien Branch of Taiwan Power Company.

Abstract:

Cellular beams are the preferred form of long span construction in multi-storey buildings. For efficient design of composite cellular beams, asymmetric sections are often manufactured in which the bottom flange is larger than the top flange. A further innovation is in the use of 80mm deep deck profiles which allows beam spacing to be increased to 4.5m, and so the effective slab width acting compositely with the long span beams is also increased. The values for shear connector (stud) resistance given in Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-1), when used in combination with these modern decking profiles, have led to problems in achieving the minimum degree of shear connection for composite beams in comparison to the former BS 5950-3. For secondary beams, the number of shear connectors that can be accommodated in a span is limited by the spacing of the deck ribs (typically 300mm for deep trapezoidal profiles), and it is found that even for pairs of shear connectors per deck rib, it is impossible to satisfy the shear connection rules in Eurocode 4 for long span asymmetric beams. SCI, with support from the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, is on the way to resolving this problem in design to Eurocode 4, and has completed a test on a 15.3m composite cellular beam at the University of Bradford. This is believed to be the longest composite cellular beam test ever carried out. The test was part-sponsored by ASD Westok.

Qureshi, J., Dennis Lam, and J. Ye. "Effect of shear connector spacing and layout on the shear connector capacity in composite beams." 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5884.

Abstract:
A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model has been developed to study the behaviour of composite beams with profiled sheeting oriented perpendicular to its axis. The analysis of the push test was carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit with slow load application to ensure a quasi-static solution. Both material and geometric nonlinearities were taken into account. Elastic¿plastic material models were used for all steel components and the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model was used for the concrete slab. The post-failure behaviour of the push test was accurately predicted, which is crucial for realistic determination of shear capacity, slip and failure mode. The results obtained from finite element analysis were verified against the experimental push tests conducted in this research and also from other studies. After validation, the model was used to carry out an extensive parametric study to investigate the effect of transverse spacing in push tests with double studs placed in favourable and staggered positions with various concrete strengths. The results were also compared with the capacity of a single shear stud. It was found that shear connector resistance of pairs of shear connectors placed in favourable position was 94% of the strength of a single shear stud on average, when the transverse spacing between studs was 200 mm or more. For the same spacing, the resistance of staggered pairs of studs was only 86% of the strength of a single stud. The strength of double shear studs in favourable position was higher than that of the staggered pairs of shear connectors.
