Abstract:
History text book is a historiography work for educational purpose. The historiography exposed in the history text book is definitely different from historiography of another scientific history book. The practical purpose of education becomes one of the important goals of composing the history text book. The history understood from history text book can do more than only developing the student’s historical awareness. The historical awareness can be detected in the attitude expressed by the students, such as their sense of nationality, partriotism, unity, willingness to sacrifice, etc. However, the history books composition, including the history text books, cannot avoid the spirit of the period it was written. According to the historiography development in Indonesia, the history text books has been written based on nederlandocentrism, indonesiacentrism, ideologism, and scientific, which are the result of how the spritit of a period affected the history text composition. This research analyse the historiography of history text books that are used in school, especialy in how these history text books appropriately reconstruct historical events with the spirit of a period and how it is composed based on scientific rules of history science.

Abstract:
During the early adoption of e-books, this unfamiliar digital format was made more palatable through analogy to the printed book. Texts were divided into ‘pages’ that could turn on screen, and e-book repositories were referred to as ‘libraries’. However, as digital texts have increasingly taken on characteristics of digital systems, the metaphor of the printed book has lost currency. Given the limitations of this conventional metaphor for the digital text, I propose an alternative conception, one that is as archaic in origin as the printed-book metaphor, yet surprisingly robust for describing the customizable texts of today’s Academy: the metaphor of movable text. The image derives from German printer Johannes Gutenberg’s 15th-century innovation for the mass production of books, a mechanical system that used paper, ink and the relatively cheap and reusable display of cubed, metal letters that could be arranged and rearranged into words on a tray ready to be pressed into print. This metaphor of book-as-movable text is useful in that it captures how the form of the academic textbook is now entangled with its process, as much as its context. But, how does this metaphor apply to the academic text in particular? If a movable academic book asks to be interpreted, does the mobility of meaning that it creates defy such interpretative engagement? In this article, I argue that when automated texts are effectively scaffolded by cultural critiques, they can support deep research processes. To become more effective, these searches demand focus as much as evaluation and thus drive towards the crafts of collation, synthesis and eventual reconfiguration.

Abstract:
Books have a significant role in the diffusion of cultural information since they not only carry the weight of cultural inheritance but also serve to preserve historical culture. The major goals of contemporary book layout design are to establish harmony and coherence; maintain overall coordination between the internal and external; and have distinctive, inventive, and modern aesthetic impacts in the context of the educational metacosmos. It is important to emphasize the artistic value and beauty of contemporary books using proper creative language design strategies. The discussion of contemporary book layout design therefore helps to increase understanding of contemporary book layout design. This essay briefly addresses book layout design and examines how books are constructed in colleges and universities. Based on the educational metauniverse environment, it outlines a number of issues that should be taken into account when designing the book’s layout. Layout analysis and text image preparation methods are used in modelling. The experimental findings indicate that this algorithm can recognise text regions with an accuracy of 94.8% and a recognition rate of 94.5%, respectively. It is concluded that the method suggested in this work has some reference value for the advancement of university book layout design and can be applied effectively in layout analysis and text typesetting.

Abstract:
The need for information in the form of books or scientific articles at the Library of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang continues to increase. To make it easier to find book information, one of which is by classifying books based on the type of category. In classifying library book data, the Nearest Neighbor Classifier method in data mining can be combined with text data extraction techniques to classify library book title text data. The purpose of this study was to classify the text title of library books using the Nearest Neighbor Classifier to determine the type of book category. This research method uses the Nearest Neighbor Classifier data mining classification technique. The results of this study are that the highest accuracy value is found at K = 12, which is 72.50%, and the model formed can be used to classify books with labels 2x0, 150, 2x2, 400, 020, 2x1, 657, 500, 375, 302.2, 800. and cannot be used for classifying books with class labels 070, 370, 330, 300, 600, 340, 700.

Abstract:
Abstract Television plays a major role in the lives of children. This studies examines one aspect of children’s television – the reading of picture books. Interaction centred around picture books has been shown to be an important element in the acquisition of literacy. Mediated picture books and “live” picture books encourage different patterns of interaction between reader and child. The reading of a television picture book, unlike that of a live picture book, is a text, not an interaction centred about a text. Such texts can form the basis of useful interactions between children and others, but exposure to mediated picture books alone does not appear to replace the function of “live” picture book reading in the acquisition of literacy.

The book industry historically has been characterized as caught between two seemingly conflicting goals: to contribute to the cultural life of the society and to make a profit. As the most influential medium for information about books, the text of the New York Times Book Review reflects that conflict and marks the boundary between books as culture and books as commerce in a way that maintains an artificial distinction between high and low culture.

Abstract:
Categorizing books and literature of any genre and subject area is a vital task for publishers which seek to distribute their books to the appropriate audiences. It is common that different countries use different subject categorization schemes, which makes international book trading more difficult due to the need to categorize books from scratch once they reach another country. A solution to this problem has been proposed in the form of an international standard called Thema, which encompasses thousands of hierarchical subject categories. However, because this scheme is quite recent, many books published before its creation are yet to be assigned subject categories. It also is often the case that even recent books are not categorized. In this work, methods for automatic categorization of books are investigated, based on multinomial Naive Bayes and Facebook's classifier fastText. The results show some amount of promise for both classifiers, but overall, due to data imbalance and a very long training time that made it difficult to use more data, it is not possible to determine with certainty which classifier actually is best.

Douglas, James Maxwell Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "Pictures and page numbers - image, text and formal structure in the visual book and the artist's book." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Art, 2005. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/23945.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the realm of artists' book works there are few that could not be said to display a fundamental concern with the physicality of the book. The mechanics of page turning are integrally implied in any artist's decision to utilise the book form. Indeed, artists' books emphasise the ability of book forms, and of text and language, to acquire meaning through form and structure alone. The physical and conceptual mechanics, or syntax, of the book - whose basis lies as much in the formal, functional dictates of the book's material characteristics, as in centuries of entrenched tradition in page layout and book design - affords a spatial, sculptural and temporal framework whose manipulation may be effortlessly and subconsciously 'read' by the viewer, according to their inherent understanding and appreciation of the form's conceptual function and operation. But while the structural connotations of the book suggest that special kind of decipherment known as 'reading', the broader associations of the book's mythic, iconic and historic symbolism may be equally unavoidable. The book works comprising the research that this paper accompanies therefore aim, on the one hand, to explore the formal, structural physicality and spatiality of the book as both a self-contained sculptural platform and as a particular sort of collection, or series, of visual imagery, while on the other hand, seeking to address the psychological form of the book as an iconic, symbolic object, and to simulate something of the character of the unique, precious and mythic books of the past. Thus it has been an attempt to deal with abstract notions of pattern and structure, as well as with the mental frameworks of association and connotation surrounding the visual modes adopted to represent these structures. The project presents an integrated and interrelated series of unique, hand-made book works that are about books - or perhaps a particular kind of 'bookishness' - a collection which aims to be physically very real, but at the same time completely mythical, and in whose volumes the common conceptual and aesthetic reference is the inherent, traditional austerity of the book page, and the simultaneous conceptual movement and structural dynamics of the mechanical book form.

Abstract:
Education is one of the personal human rights of individuals. It is very valuable right for an indi-vidual or a whole society to be educated. This study has been done to know teachers’ views about problems and challenges that teachers face during teaching of mathematics text book in upper secondary As we know mathematics education is necessary for development of mental discipline and capacity. It helps student in critical thinking and increase their power of analyzing the world. In Afghanistan, post-conflict country educational bases have been destroyed by three decades war. There is need to improve education, especially, teachers’ education in order to improve mathematics teachers education in Afghanistan. A fact that we face with, because of thirty years of war, the teachers proficiency remained imbalance. Also Afghanistan remained back in educa-tion but new text book is the biggest change in education toward a good quality in education. For example in the past more subjects like math, algebra, geometry and etc. were taught individually, in many separate books but now these are incorporated into one book. In addition, each subject was taught by one teacher but now one teacher has to teach all of them alone. Statistics and probability are the new subjects in the new textbooks which were not in the curriculum in the past. The survey has not been made about the textbooks up to now. .Questionnaires was distributed to 70 teachers in different provinces. In this study for data collec-tion and gaining teacher view on this regard teacher participate from deferent provinces (Kabul Ningarhar or and Paktia ).It has been found that the new textbooks are better designed than the old textbooks and are based on the modern teaching and learning materials while the old text-books are designed on the old system of learning and teaching system. On the other hand, teach-ers like and prefer the new textbooks for students learning and they claim that new textbooks contain better mathematics knowledge and contents which are more useful for students learning.

Stanke, Maria Helena. "Boktrailern : varför marknadsföra text med ljud och bild?" Thesis, University West, Department of Economics and IT, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hv:diva-2607.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the book trailer as a phenomenon and method of marketing. Similarities between the book trailer, the book cover and the movie trailer are examined to show how a "typical" book trailer looks and what functions it possibly has. The paper also explores the book trailer’s prospects of reaching different audiences in different age groups. It also points to difficulties in defining an audience. Young adult literature and the fantasy genre are linked to the book trailer and examples are given on how authors and publishers can establish relationships with readers through the Internet. General guidelines are given for what should be considered to appeal to as many potential readers as possible when a book trailer is being used or designed. The book trailer's ability to reach young, reluctant readers, who have given up on reading to the benefit of image based storytelling like movies and computer games, are explored. The conclusion highlights the advantages of promoting books with audio and video.

Schuster, Jonathan G. "The influence of reader's goals on organizational signals in text comprehension." Virtual Press, 2006. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1347735.

Full text
Abstract:
This study researched the question as to whether reading goals and organizational signals interact to affect comprehension. Organizational signals are literary instruments that make the topic structure more salient and increase the recall for the majority of the topics in a text. Readers have specific goals that they wish to accomplish during reading. Participants read one of two texts, which contained one of three levels of signals: no signals, half signals, and full signals. The participants were assigned a specific goal from one of two main categories of goals: reading for school or reading for pleasure. Significant Text and Goal differences were found, but there was no effect of headings. Participants with the school goal recalled more than did the participants with the pleasure goal. It appears that reading goals do have an effect on the processing characteristics that people use while reading, which affects the amount recalled.

Abstract:
Both diffraction gratings and optical interference coatings are used in a wide range of applications. While the basic theory of thin-film optics is well covered in many optics text books and many books on the design, fabrication and application of optical coatings have been published, the treatment of diffraction gratings in optics text books goes little beyond presenting the grating and to date only three books on diffraction gratings have been published. The book edited by Petit1 describes the electromagnetic theory of gratings. The book by Hutley2 concentrates on the physics of gratings. Complementing the above two, the recently published book by Loewen and Popov3 aims at the applications of gratings. In addition, a volume in SPIE’s milestone series, edited by Maystre4, contains many important papers in all aspects of gratings up to 1992.

Schmidt, Alex P. Defining Terrorism. ICCT, March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19165/2023.3.01.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes, and builds on, some of the author’s previous conceptual work. It approaches the definition of terrorism from five angles: (i) by focusing on the history of terrorism; (ii) by focusing on the psychology of ‘terror’ (the threat and fear factor); (iii) by focusing on forms of political violence other than terrorist violence; (iv) by focusing on the terrorist act; and (v) by focusing on the terrorist. Subsequently it addresses the question who should have definition power? The author looks at how terrorists, victims of terrorism, religious authorities, mass and social media, national governments, the United Nations, and members from academia have tried to define terrorism. In his conclusion, the author pleads for a narrow definition of terrorism. The main body of the text is followed by a sample of definitions of terrorism and a bibliography of books, book chapters, and articles on the subject.

Abstract:
The article states that with the development of new journalism, the author’s ability to characterize a phenomenon and identify a trend acquires special value. Representatives of Ukrainian new journalism, which is a relatively new genre, are already gradually implementing these tasks. They compose entire books from their reports, offering the reader a condensed version of versatile observations about a certain country, situation, or phenomenon. In contrast to ordinary reportage, fiction is a synthetic genre, in which it is not reported, but told. The authors of the article research Reporters which is the first magazine of new journalism in Ukraine. Their main task is to explain the phenomenon of “meaning between facts”. According to the authors, this phenomenon is simple and unique at the same time, because through people’s stories you can find depths that relate to historical, cultural and geopolitical life. The article analyzes the interaction of text and images, shows how to find meaningful messages in actual data using specific examples. The study singled out accents that relate to the interaction of text and images. Quite often, photography reproduces reality and helps the reader to paint reality in his imagination. Textual forms delve into the plot through human history and detail. In four printed issues of the magazine, the authors of the study analyzed the stories that are particularly relevant today. First of all, this concerns Russian aggression and the insubordination of Ukrainians. Key words: new journalism, non-fiction, text, images, dialog, photojournalism.

Yablonskyy, Maxym. «NEW DAYS» WEEKLY AND PETRO VOLYNIAK, PUBLISHER AND AUTHOR. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11058.

Full text
Abstract:
In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

Full text
Abstract:
Low uptake of HIV testing is one of the main reasons why only one third of people who need antiretroviral medications are currently receiving treatment worldwide. Mass media are sometimes used to promote voluntary HIV counseling and testing and to sustain test seeking behavior. Mass media include television, radio, internet, newspapers, books, posters, and billboards.

Cristia, Julian P., Ofer Malamud, Diether Beuermann, Yyannu Cruz-Aguayo, and Santiago Cueto. Home Computers and Child Outcomes: Short-Term Impacts from a Randomized Experiment in Peru. Inter-American Development Bank, December 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011442.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents results from a randomized control trial in which approximately 1,000 OLPC XO laptops were provided for home use to children attending primary schools in Lima, Peru. The intervention increased access and use of home computers, with some substitution away from computer use outside the home. Beneficiaries were more likely to complete domestic chores but less likely to read books. Treatment children scored almost one standard deviation higher in a test of XO proficiency, though there were no effects on objective and self-reported skills for using a Windows-based PC and Internet. There were positive impacts on the Raven's Progressive Matrices test among children who did not have a home computer before the intervention, but no significant effects for the sample as a whole. Finally, there was little evidence for spillovers within schools, although close friends and classmates of laptop recipients did exhibit higher proficiency with the XO computer.
