Full textOne promising technique for introducing friction anisotropy in a surface is the Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD). This method has demonstrated a wide range of possibilities for creating films with diverse morphologies and structural characteristics, which may induce anisotropy in various physical properties. However, the study of friction anisotropy in GLAD films remains limited, potentially leading to the underutilization of this technique in tribological applications. In this context, this thesis aims to investigate the potential use of GLAD to induce friction anisotropy, with a particular focus on the influence of morphological and crystallographic factors. Two metals, tungsten (W) and molybdenum (Mo), were selected for deposition under varying conditions. Scratch tests were conducted with different normal loads and scratching directions to determine whether friction anisotropy could be consistently achieved and how it manifests. The results indicate that not only is it possible to obtain friction anisotropy through GLAD, but also that different types of anisotropy can be observed. This anisotropic behavior seems to be primarily governed by the film’s morphology, particularly through the control of plastic deformation and column-column interactions. Furthermore, the type of material and deposition angle were found to significantly influence friction anisotropy, with Mo films exhibiting more complex anisotropic characteristics than W films. Although the significant impact of morphology on the behavior of most films was evident, a Mo film demonstrated that other factors may also contribute to atypical frictional responses

Full textSiC protective coatings are generally prepared by CVD from the MTS / H2 gas precursor. In the case of multilayered coatings, a key point for successful applications is a good adhesion between the various layers. Nevertheless, when a SiC layer is deposited on another one, the experimental parameters can be drastically modified during transient phenomena, resulting in the deposition of an interfacial material with altered physico-chemical properties, which may affect the adhesion between the CVD-SiC layers. In the present contribution, transient stages resulting from a decrease of the H2 content in the precursor and causing interphases with a large excess of carbon, were found to be the most disruptive. In such a case, interfacial decohesions were observed by scratch testing. However, the adhesion properties could be improved by removing the harmful carbon-rich interphases using an in situ NH3 treatment

Full textThis dissertation tries to conjugate the comprehension and measurement work to decrypt mechanical properties of solids at micrometric and nanometric scales. The underlying questions are both to locate the limits of bulk properties (frontier of continuous medium mechanic) when the analysis window is narrowed and furthermore to describe new properties related to the decrease in measurement scale, if any. The non-linear mechanical analysis of Intermittent Contact Mode in AFM enables the monitoring of local mechanical properties of polymer such as storage and loss modulus or adherence. The surprising result of this analysis concerns the loss modulus whose measured value is greater than the macroscopic bulk one by one order of magnitude. The nanoindentation tests operated at a constant strain rate confirm and enrich this result : a 'characteristic heterogeneity length' has been introduced to define for this material the dimension under which the mechanical response differs from the one of homogeneous matter. This concept is canonical for heterogeneous materials at micrometer scale (i. E. Polymer blends) and is extended to material which are homogeneous in composition. Beyond this characteristic length, materials can only be described through statistical means. Another development of this study concerns the macroscopic description of materials using bulk constitutive equations. A particular effort has been held to describe viscoplastic behavior of glassy polymers (PMMA and PS). The viscoplastic data obtained by nanoindentation experiments and scratch tests may be interpreted with the help of Eyring molecular theory of activation energy. The results obtained at small strain rate (<0. 1 Hz) enables the computation of an activation volume of the polymeric material (lnm3 for PMMA et 0. 4nm3 for PS). These activation volumes are in good agreement with the theoretical ones and those obtained by macroscopic analytical methods. The scratch test experimental data are showing that at high strain rate (>0. 1Hz) the viscoelastic loss in contact increases and the calculated activation volume decreases. The phenomenon is interpreted as a transition to a B type relaxation of the polymeric material. The origin of the characteristic homogeneity length is still to be enlighten. Should this be understood as an evolution of the mechanical properties due to the narrowing of the analysis window? Is this length related to intrinsic properties of surface? In this case, surface mechanical properties would thus be heterogeneous
