The textbook is a Supplement to the course of lectures given at the faculties of psychology, where one of the sections of this discipline is clinical psychology. This publication has been updated to reflect the 11th International classification of diseases, changes in which also affect the classification aspects of mental disorders. In order to implement the principle of consistency in mastering knowledge of pathopsychology, the material is given in the context of General and clinical psychology, which facilitates the holistic assimilation of the specifics of this science and understanding its place among other related Sciences. In accordance with the requirements of didactics, the structuring of the material is based on the principle "from simple to complex"; at the end of each paragraph, test questions are offered, finding answers to which in the text of the book forms the core knowledge of the reader. The Chapter devoted to disorders of specific mental functions, in addition to General theoretical data, provides brief descriptions of psychodiagnostic techniques designed to assess the qualitative and quantitative parameters of recorded changes. When writing the book, we used a rich domestic and foreign material published in numerous sources. Policy dissemination research is focused on understanding and addressing these barriers and can be defined as: the study of the targeted distribution of scientific evidence to policymakers to understand how to promote the adoption and sustainment of evidence-based policies. Policy dissemination research studies can be classified as audience research studies—which are formative assessments of policymakers’ knowledge, attitudes, and uses of research evidence and policy contexts—and intervention studies, which test the effectiveness of different policymaker-focused dissemination strategies. Outcomes of policy dissemination research studies include self-report policymaker research utilization, self-report policymaker support for evidence-based policies, and observed policymaker research utilization. There is also a need to grow the field of policy implementation research and integrate theories, frameworks, and methods across the fields of public administration research, political science, and implementation science. Among the topics covered in this book, policy dissemination research is among the least developed.

Some of the difficulties of handling the Bible are discussed. These involve correctly discerning the genre of each part, the questions to which any given text is addressed, the limited knowledge of the writers, for example about natural phenomena, and moral objections. Such issues are handled by bringing to bear what wisdom we can, as a community of readers. It is merely correct to admit that the literary genre is varied and includes polemic and storytelling alongside history, sometimes woven together. When remarkable events are recounted, it is proper to bring science and archeology to bear, and aim to be fair to the text. The history of violence should be handled even more carefully, so as not to promote attitudes that lead to violence in the present. This can be done through careful reflection which foregrounds issues of fairness, and how injustice is properly opposed.

The chapter describes how the prerogative state was able to completely abolish the inviolability of the law. Since the doctrine of the inviolability of law is part of the heritage of rational Natural Law, it is argued, its explicit rejection in the legal system of the Third Reich raises the question of the whole attitude of National-Socialism toward Natural Law. The chapter describes how the repudiation of Natural Law was achieved and also the form this repudiation took. Despite the fact that Natural Law has been refuted time and again by political science, until the period when this text was written it had not yet lost its vitality entirely.

Contemporary art has been a site of intense linguistic production for several decades. Visual artists experiment with new ways of displaying or enframing language that contest or subvert dominant language ideologies. Thus artists produce new regimes of language that regulate or unsettle moral or political visions, shaping attitudes and behaviour. The works of the contemporary artist Xu Bing, as well as interpretations of his work by the artist and commentators, demonstrate how artistic production and criticism contribute to language ideological debates about Chinese—in particular, about Chinese writing—and the nature of language more broadly. This chapter discusses aspects of Xu Bing’s biography and artistic practice related to his use of language. It discusses the language ideological positions underpinning four of his major works. It concludes with reflections on what language policy and planning scholars might learn from extending the scope of their interest to text-based art.

This book examines the place of the French love allegory the Romance of the Rose in fourteenth-century English literary culture. The Rose had a transformative effect on the multilingual literary culture of fourteenth-century England, leaving more material evidence for late medieval English-speaking readers than any other vernacular literary work from mainland Europe. In an ongoing series of encounters both within and beyond the territorial boundaries of Britain, continuously reshaped by new ideas and attitudes from across fourteenth-century Europe, the Rose in England became a cultural artefact of huge significance for a wide range of readers—men and women, clerics and laypeople, those at the centre and those on the fringes of the aristocratic courts. The central assertion of this book is that by tracing the radically plural afterlife of the Rose as it moves through a series of distinct but related cultural spheres in fourteenth-century England, it is possible to reveal the poem’s decisive importance in shaping the terms in which literary value was produced and contested. The book examines three different but related spheres of literary culture: aristocratic reading communities, Latinate philosophical poetry, and ideas about poetry and the role of the poet derived from classical literature. In each of these areas, the Rose is revealed to be both a generative and a disruptive text for the English poets who followed in its wake, making possible the newly ambitious writing that emerged in the generation that included Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland, John Gower, and the Gawain-poet.

To an outside observer, Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) look like epileptic seizures. The manifestations of PNES include collapses, impaired consciousness, and seizure-related injuries. However, unlike epileptic seizures, which are the result of abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, most PNES are an automatic psychological response to a trigger perceived as threatening. Not least because the changes in the brain that underpin PNES cannot be visualized easily with clinical tests (such as the EEG), there are many uncertainties and controversies surrounding the condition. Patients often provoke a mixture of emotions in healthcare professionals. In the authors’ previous book, In Our Words: Personal Accounts of Living with Non-Epileptic Seizures, over 100 individuals with PNES and their families wrote about their experiences with the condition. While some had positive care experiences, most were left feeling confused, angry, and abandoned by the clinicians they had encountered. Non-Epileptic Seizures in Our Experience: Accounts of Healthcare Professionals complements the previous book by presenting the perspectives of over ninety healthcare professionals from around the world. The anonymous publication format enabled many not only to share success stories but also to be open about difficulties and failures. There will be something to learn from this book for highly experienced professionals as well as for relative novices and those experiencing PNES. The hope is that this book will challenge negative attitudes surrounding the condition, improve understanding between healthcare professionals and patients, and, ultimately, advance the quality of care provided for those with PNES.

In a post-factual world in which claims are often held to be true only to the extent that they partisanly confirm one’s preexisting beliefs, this book asks the following crucial questions: How can one identify the many forms of untruthfulness in discourse? How can one know when their use is ethically wrong? How can one judge untruthfulness in the messiness of situated discourse? Drawing on pragmatics, philosophy, psychology, and law, All Bullshit and Lies? develops a comprehensive framework for analyzing untruthful discourse in situated context. The TRUST (Trust-Related Untruthfulness in Situated Text) framework sees untruthfulness as encompassing not just deliberate manipulations of what you believe to be the truth (the insincerity of withholding, misleading, and lying), but also the distortions that arise pathologically from an irresponsible attitude toward the truth (dogma, distortion, and bullshit). Truth is often not “in play” (as in jokes or fiction), or concealing it can achieve a greater good (as in saving another’s face). Untruthfulness becomes unethical in discourse, though, when it unjustifiably breaches the trust an interlocutor invests in the speaker. In such cases, the speaker becomes willfully insincere or epistemically negligent and thus culpable to a greater or lesser degree. In addition to the theoretical framework, the book provides a clear, practical heuristic for analyzing discursive untruthfulness and applies it to such cases of public discourse as the Brexit “battle bus,” Trump’s tweet about voter fraud, Blair’s and Bush’s claims about weapons of mass destruction, and the multiple forms of untruthfulness associated with the Skripal poisoning case.

The teaching profession is a highly stressful occupation and susceptible to burnout due to high levels of workload compared to other contact occupations. In Malaysia, the majority of science teachers are experiencing physical and mental drain after long periods of teaching service and mundane routine year in and year out. Despite the general assumptions of a teacher’s job is merely teaching from a textbook, a teacher’s workload includes teaching-related (class preparation and classroom management) and non-teaching related (administration and meetings). All these challenges required teachers to possess high self-efficacy beliefs, great teaching motivation, and positive attitudes toward teaching science. When the development of the affective domain is neglected during pre-service years, teachers’ behavioural intention in teaching science will subside gradually. This may cause emotional exhaustion, feelings of ineffectiveness, and job burnout when the pre-service teachers start to work in a high-pressure environment. The prime focus of this book includes the use of Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach in studying the mediating effect of attitudes toward teaching science in the relationship between teacher self-efficacy beliefs and teaching motivation on behavioural intention in teaching science. This book provides insights for policymakers to formulate courses on managing personal affective domains in the teacher education curriculum. It is also hoped that this book will be of interest to academicians and researchers on the topic related to teacher education and teaching professional development.

A growing number of political communication and media scholars are attending to representations of American political processes and institutions in entertainment content, mostly agreeing that there is considerable democratic value in the inextricable link between politics and popular culture. Yet few of these studies have yet considered comic books and their related media as a source of “politainment.” This volume demonstrates the rich and relevant political content of comic books and their related media. From biographies to biopunk, superheroes to science-fiction, humor to horror, and articles to allohistories, comic books offer depictions of the American political arena as site of White masculinity, mired in cynicism and disaffection that is tempered by perpetual hope and optimism. Though such themes and narratives may be found in other pop culture media, comics are important because they are as often proactive as they are reactive in their political content. From the time Captain America punched Hitler in the face nine months before Pearl Harbor and the United States’ entrance into World War II, comics have not only depicted current trends but also the trajectory of those trends. This book familiarizes scholars, teachers, and students of American politics with the presidential and campaign content of comics, exhibiting how comics reflect and shape our political knowledge and attitudes. It is also written for comics studies scholars and students, offering the perspective of rhetoric and political communication to the interpretation of comics content.

Abstract:
The International Studies Association’s (ISA) Scientific Study of International Processes (SSIP) section is dedicated to the systematic analysis of empirical data covering the entire range of international political questions. Drawing on the canons of scientific inquiry, SSIP seeks to support and promote replicable research in terms of the clarity of a theoretical argument and/or the testing of hypotheses. Journals that have been most likely to publish SSIP-related research include the top three general journals in the field of political science: the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics. A number of more specialized journals frequently publish research of interest to the SSIP community, such as Conflict Management and Peace Science, International Interactions, International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research. Together, these journals published a total of 1,024 qualifying articles between 2003 and 2010. These articles cover a wide range of topics, from armed conflict and conflict management to terrorism, international political economy, economic development or growth, monetary policy, foreign aid, sanctions, human rights and repression, international law, international organizations/institutions, and foreign policy attitudes and beliefs. Data users who are interested in conducting their own research must: choose the most appropriate data set(s), become familiar with what the data set includes and how its central concepts are measured, multipurpose data sources, investigate missing data, and assess robustness across multiple data sets.

The International Thematic Proceedia titled „Psychological research and practice” is a publication from the 15th International Conference “Days of Applied Psychology” held on September 27th & 28th 2019 at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš. This is a traditional annual nonprofit conference which has been organized since 2005 by the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš, with the support and co-financing of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. The conference started with the idea of gathering researchers and practitioners who discuss the link between science and practice in different psychological areas. From the very start, this gathering has welcomed international participants, and year after year this number is on the rise. This scientific publication contains 18 reviewed articles which can be classified as original scientific papers. The authors of these manuscripts come from five countries: Italy, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republic of Serbia. Papers belong to the different areas of psychology, reflecting the scope of interest of the authors as well as the topic of the conference. This publication is organized into the following thematic sections: 1) Plenary lecture; 2) Developmental and Educational psychology 3) Social Psychology; 4) Psychology of Personality and Individual Differences and Psychological Measurement; 5) Clinical and Health Psychology; 6) Organizational and Marketing Psychology, and 7) Symposium: Understanding sexual related behavior in students: Personality, emotions and attitudes.

Political demography is a disciplinary field devoted to the study of population size, composition, and distribution in relation to both government and politics. The focus is on the political consequences of population change, especially the effects of population change on the demands made upon governments, on the performance of governments, on the distribution of political power within states, and on the distribution of national power among states. Political demography is concerned not only with the facts and figures of population—that is, fertility, mortality, and migration rates—but also with the knowledge and attitudes that people and their governments have toward population issues. Unfortunately, these issues have not generated adequate interest among both demographers and political scientists, not to mention economists and researchers in general. This is because political demography lies uncomfortably at the boundary between demography and political science. Political demography deserves serious and thoughtful scholarly attention because many, if not most, of the central policy concerns can be approached directly from the population perspective, including the key dimensions of population dynamics such as politics of size, fertility rates, life expectancy and the outcomes of success, race, war, migration and migration impact on the size and structure of populations, and population density. These core population characteristics can be related to many other attributes ranging from urbanization and mortality to gender, religion, education, productivity, health, and conflict. These characteristics are, in turn, essential for the analysis of themes like elections, social security, economic convergence, political development, and environmental degradation.

The regulatory evolution of medical technologies in the EU offers a unique perspective with regard to highlighting significant elements of both European science policy and the development of European institutions, especially with regard to the passage from their (primarily) economic to their political phases. Since the early 1990s, while establishing a market for biotechnology, the European Communities have been developing some policy-related visions of technoscience and its potential risks, while at the same time framing the concept of European citizenship through European values and rights. The emerging and re-emerging medical technology of xenotransplantation, namely the clinical use of cells, tissues, and organs between species, while having evolved from its primary focus on organs to so-called advanced therapies (cell therapy, gene therapy, and tissue-engineered products), also provided an opportunity to test and implement different science policy models in dealing with risks and uncertainties in the European knowledge-based and innovation-oriented society.

Why do some parents refuse to vaccinate their children? Why do some people keep guns at home, despite scientific evidence of risk to their family members? And why do people use antibiotics for illnesses they cannot possibly alleviate? When it comes to health, many people insist that science is wrong, that the evidence is incomplete, and that unidentified hazards lurk everywhere. In Denying to the Grave, Gorman and Gorman, a father-daughter team, explore the psychology of health science denial. Using several examples of such denial as test cases, they propose six key principles that may lead individuals to reject "accepted" health-related wisdom: the charismatic leader; fear of complexity; confirmation bias and the internet; fear of corporate and government conspiracies; causality and filling the ignorance gap; and the nature of risk prediction. The authors argue that the health sciences are especially vulnerable to our innate resistance to integrate new concepts with pre-existing beliefs. This psychological difficulty of incorporating new information is on the cutting edge of neuroscience research, as scientists continue to identify brain responses to new information that reveal deep-seated, innate discomfort with changing our minds. Denying to the Grave explores risk theory and how people make decisions about what is best for them and their loved ones, in an effort to better understand how people think when faced with significant health decisions. This book points the way to a new and important understanding of how science should be conveyed to the public in order to save lives with existing knowledge and technology.
