Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACTPower source plays an important role in keeping normal functions of biodegradable electronic devices. In this paper, we proposed a fabrication method of biodegradable supercapacitor (BSC), which can provide energy for portable and implantable medical electronics. The BSC has a sandwich-like symmetric structure, which was assembled layer by layer. The electrochemical performances of BSC were measured, including the cyclic voltammetry test, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Titanium foil was used as a template to generate microstructure for polylactic acid (PLA) supporting substrate. The microstructure provided strong adhesion force for iron film in sputtering process. The nanoporous zinc oxide layer was prepared by evaporation-driven self-assembly technology on iron film. The nanoporous structure was in favour of ionic storage in charging-discharging process. About 60% of capacitance retention was achieved after 3000 times of cycling test. After connecting three BSC in series, a green LED pattern was lighted up immediately, indicating that the energy was stored in BSC device successfully. After immersing the BSC in DMEM, the BSC can be totally degraded gradually. This work provided a feasible scheme for developing biodegradable energy storage device, it also gave a possible avenue for powering biodegradable electronic devices.

Abstract:
This work describes a portable microsensor for analyzing the silicate concentration in water. Conventionally adopted silicate analysis methods involve bulky instrumentation that are limited in portability and immediateness. The proposed silicate microsensor consists of a microliquid core waveguide, passive spiral micromixer, and bubble traps that possess excellent signal enhancement properties. The microsensor size is 52 × 26 mm, while each measurement requires only 115 μl of a sample and reagents, thereby reducing the sample requirement for a considerable amount of time and work to collect expensive reagents. The spiral micromixer has a mixing capability superior to that of a premix mixture. Bubble traps have been developed to trap air bubbles formed in the microchannel in order to prevent gas bubbles from interfering with the measurements. As a linear function of silicate concentration, the absorbance response ranges from 0 to 250 nM. Additionally, the linearity is excellent with a linear R value of 0.9985 and the experimental detection limit is 8.9 nM. The proposed portable microsensor significantly contributes to aqueous inspection, subsequently creating a highly value-added technology for chemical sensors and microsystems.

Abstract:
This work describes the fabrication and test of a high temperature (+200°C) capable high frequency transformer. It was manufactured using Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology, which allowed the complex multilayer structure of ceramic and metal windings to be formed. However, the selected LTCC composition is a free sintering ceramic and there is an interaction between the metal conductor and the ceramic substrate during lamination and firing that can lead to significant deformation, presenting a significant engineering challenge. Here the fabrication process for the LTCC is described (screen printing, collation, lamination and firing) for a number of iterations of the transformer design, each of which was analysed for deformation and subjected to electrical tests. In addition a silicone adhesive for assembling the LTCC with the transformer was analysed for high-temperature performance. A test vehicle was assembled and it was subjected to 1000 hours at 210°C. Shear tests were performed at intervals to quantify the loss in bond strength over time. After a good solution for manufacture was found, a batch of transformers was produced, characterized and tested to demonstrate a high reproducibility and manufacturing yield.

Abstract:
Silicon Carbide has proven its relevance for various MEMS and sensors devices applications. This paper presents the fabrication and the first test results of 3C-SiC electrostatic resonators actuated by applying a combination of AC and DC voltages. The recipe used for the fabrication has taken the advantage of the starting material, 3C-SiC grown on Si, which allows us to use the Si substrate as sacrificial layer to release the structures. Resonators have been fabricated by a two-step process, combining RIE ICP etching with HF wet etching. Resonators have been successfully electrostatically actuated in air-ambient condition. The resonance frequencies were clearly identified, although capacitive current created by actuation was not detected.

A simulation of wind action was achieved to test the influence of some external defects on the resistance of standing trees of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton), and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). The methodology used consisted of applying a force on the tree with a winch. Every tree was filmed during winching, and the geometrically corrected images were used to compute displacement. Balsam fir trees tended to break more than uproot, and in most cases, breakage occurred at the crack level. Even though maximum turning moment did not differ between control and defective balsam fir trees, a significant difference was found for maximum stress, showing a reduction in resistance associated with cracks. No reduction in resistance could be seen for the other species, but trees were relatively young and care should be taken before extending these results to older trees.

Abstract:
There is growing interest in applying glass as an interposer substrate for 2.5D/3D applications. Advantages of glass based solutions include significant opportunities for cost benefits by leveraging economies of scale as well as forming substrates at design thickness. A lot of work is being done to validate the value of glass as an interposer substrate. One important area is the electrical performance of glass relative to silicon. Because glass is an insulator, it is expected to have better electrical performance than silicon. Electrical characterization and electrical models demonstrate the advantages of the insulating properties of glass, and its positive impact on functional performance. Further advantages are anticipated in reliability performance, because of the ability to adjust thermal properties such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of glass. Progress in the ability to fabricate wafers and panels fully populated with through and blind holes has been reported. We describe the ability to leverage existing downstream processes such as via filling of both through and blind vias, as well as novel handling techniques to enable processing of thin glass. We also report progress in evaluating reliability through thermal cycle tests.
