Abstract:
This thesis in Creative Writing is presented in two sections: the first, Shifting Territories is made up of seven short stories and a novella; the second, "Searching for Lightness: A Critical Commentary for Shifting Territories‟, is an essay centred on Italo Calvino‟s concept of lightness, including a discussion of its relevance to my own writing. The short stories and novella of Shifting Territories share certain conceptual preoccupations. Set in South Africa, England and Wales with characters of different ages, ethnic identities and sexualities, the stories are all concerned with loss, the reinvention of the self and transgression; sub-themes include death, fantasy, guilt, delusion and alienation. Another conceptual preoccupation is with the way the stories are told, the attempt to bring lightness to dark subject matter, largely by means of humour and an oblique perspective. "Searching for Lightness: A Critical Commentary for Shifting Territories‟ is divided into four chapters. It begins by trying to fathom what Calvino meant by "lightness‟. It then looks at "heaviness‟ as a way to better understand lightness by knowing its opposite. After examining the features of heaviness in a few novels, it moves on to discuss lightness in short stories, particularly two stories by Ali Smith. The conclusion explains the influence of Calvino‟s ideas on my perspective as a writer and on my fiction.

Abstract:
Given that socio-cultural and geographical realities did not have relevant regulation, the Constituent Assembly laid down in the Constitution of Colombia the basis for the birth of regions, provinces and indigenous territories into legal life; bequeathing the development of such a matter at the legal level. This has been addressed in recent years, both with laws 1454 of 2011 and 1962 of 2019, in which parliament has established the conditions for the emergence of the regions, as well as with the enactment of different decrees-laws, with which it has opted for the functioning of the Aboriginal territories. All of which opens up a range of questions, within which it is of momentous importance to determine if the abolition of the current departmental administrative is intended, and in general to establish whether steps are taken for further decentralization. With the present study we try to provide some lights about that.

Abstract:
This dissertation lies at the intersection between labor economics, urban economics and entrepreneurship. It aims at better understanding how education and labor market policies affect local economic activity and inequality.Chapter 1 provides new insights on labor market inequality, earnings mobility and earnings dynamics in France between 1991 and 2016. Using linked employer-employee data, we show that, contrary to other developed countries, France experienced a decrease in inequality over the period. This reduction in inequality is driven mostly by an increase in women's compensation, especially at the bottom of the distribution, and by a reduction in the gender gap. We find that the compression in labor earnings is also observed over space, with a convergence of the poorest cities and a decrease in inequality both within and between territories. Second, we discuss the role of several labor market policies and find that the rise in the minimum wage and the reduction in the workweek had a major impact. Finally, we characterize the main features of the income growth distribution. As in the US, we find that it is negatively skewed, leptokurtic, has double Pareto tails and evolves over the life-cycle. These new stylized facts provide a better understanding of the evolution of inequality and earnings dynamics over the past decades.Chapter 2, investigates the effects of profit-sharing on workers' compensation and firms' productivity. To do so, we exploit the expansion of a large mandatory profit-sharing scheme in France in the 1990s. Since 1967, firms with more than 100 employees have to distribute a share of their profits to their workers. In 1991, this threshold was reduced to 50 employees. We rely on a bunching analysis and a difference-in-differences strategy exploiting these thresholds to identify the causal effects of profit-sharing. We show that the adoption of profit-sharing led to a sizeable increase in workers' compensation matching a sharp reduction in shareholders' profits. We find no incidence on workers' base wage except at the top of the earnings distribution (e.g. for managers and engineers). Finally, we find no effect on economic activity such as firms' investment or productivity. As a result, profit-sharing acts as a redistributive tool that increases workers' compensation with little impact on firms' economic activity.Chapter 3 analyses the effects of universities on cities' economic activity and local labor markets. This chapter seeks to understand the impact of human capital on business dynamism, employment, wages and city growth. To do so, I exploit a massive college expansion policy implemented in France over the 1990s. I combine a staggered event study design with rich administrative data on workers and firms to estimate the causal effects of these new colleges. City-level results indicate that the policy persistently increased the local level of education and resulted in more creative destruction. On the one hand, I find a large increase in firm creation, especially in skilled industries. On the other hand, incumbent firms experienced more exits and lower growth. Overall, new colleges improved cities' economic activity, with more production and employment for the youth but negative effects on employment for older workers. I complement city-level results with an analysis at the individual level to provide evidence on the long-run effects of new colleges. Relying on differences between cohorts induced by the timing of the policy, I find a positive effect on education and labor market outcomes. Exposure to new colleges increases the probability to graduate from university, to be employed and to hold a high-skilled job in the long-run. This chapter shows that the local level of human capital plays a major role for firm creation, with a sizeable impact on local economic activity. It also provides new evidence on the long-run effects of higher education on individuals' labor market outcomes

Reflect on the concept of territorialization as a political and cultural transformation of ethnic territories in state territories is one of the goals of this dissertation. Carry out an historical investigation of the establishment of contacts between ethnic groups and state agents of Strategic Telegraph Commission of Mato Grosso to Amazonas, the state republican representatives, is a focus of the study. Point out the administrative articulations historically built between the Rondon Commission and the Regional Inspectorate of the Indian Protection Service for the state of Mato Grosso is the hub of research. Through the re-baptism of strategic points in the geographical area inhabited by indians and the installation of telegraph stations and indian posts in the region of Mato Grosso, military agents promote a process of nationalization, colonization and land use planning that would lead to profound transformations on indigenous groups. The construction of a telegraph station and an indian post in a region baptized by Rondon produce the state territory. The indians, in turn, participatory of the historical process and builders of their own territoriality, establish new political alliances with external actors driven by the interest of their communities.

Abstract:
This thesis project illustrates how Indigenous-centered performance enables and supports collective meaning-making and indigenous continuity. An examination of the Canadian policies regarding indigenous ceremony, public performances, and community gathering is presented to show the effects this complexity history is felt by indigenous people today. The use of counter-narrative, and telling ancestral stories of resistance provide insight into the way in which indigenous people have resisted these assimilation policies over generations. Our program here is to animate indigenous people within a living framework of continuity and Indigenous Knowledge Systems by focusing on how today’s performance and performing is connected to oral cultures, indigenous intellectual traditions. Indigenous performance and indigenous artists who while giving an insight into how indigenous people are creating safe social and learning spaces and can invoke positive spectrum emotions to combat colonial trauma. Interviewing five indigenous artistic performers, who engage many genres in performance, sets the basis of indigenous research methods including Kovach’s conversational method of interviewing. Presenting indigenous performances’ role in indigenous continuity, education, and generational knowledge transmission affirm the deep consideration of indigenous artists today and their role in leadership and in empowering indigenous people and communities. This research also uncovers a generational knowledge system that values of education, healing, protection and reciprocity that compose legacies of ancestral knowledge that can propagate healthy and loving indigenous realities.

Full text
Abstract:
Chromosomes occupy specific regions of the nucleus called chromosome territories. In somatic cells, the positioning of the chromosomes is conditioned by gene density, transcriptional activity and the guanine-cytosine content. These associations demonstrate the existence of a functional relationship between chromosomal territoriality and gene expression. Little is known about chromosomal positioning during spermatogenesis. Some authors have suggested that the chromosomes distribution in spermatogenic cells could affect spermatogenesis development and have implications for embryo gene expression. The objective of this doctoral thesis was to establish a three-dimensional model of chromosomal territoriality during the different stages of the Mus musculus spermatogenesis. To achieve this objective, we have developed a methodology for performing three-dimensional study of chromosomes positioning in germ cells and spermatozoa with the aim to describe the chromosome positioning, and to identify the factors that regulate the territoriality of the chromosomes in these cell types. Testicular tissue from individuals of C57BL6J Mus musculus strain was used. The methodology developed consisted in the following procedures: i) optimized cell fixation to preserve the three-dimensionality of the nuclei, ii) fluorescence in situ hybridization of all mouse chromosomes, iii) three-dimensional image captures by confocal microscopy, iii) cell identification by immunofluorescence iv) image analysis using Matlab, v) numerical data extraction and statistical analysis. This methodology allowed the study of all chromosomes positioning of the mouse genome in five cellular stages, which cover the whole spermatogenic process: spermatogonia-early preleptotene, spermatocytes I at mid preleptotene-zygotene stages, spermatocytes I at pachytene stage, round spermatids and spermatozoa. For each stage, data of the nuclear volume occupied by each chromosome were obtained, the position of chromosomes according to the central-peripheral nuclear axis and the overlapping frequency between chromosomes. Results showed that radial and relative positioning of chromosomes during spermatogenesis is dynamic and non-random. Several evidences were observed indicating that the chromosomal events that lead to meiotic recombination determine the dynamics of homologue chromosomes position from spermatogonia to pachytene stage. In this sense, it has been observed that homologous chromosomes share the same chromosomal territory in stages near the beginning of meiosis. In addition, the bouquet distribution affects the territoriality organization of the nucleus at pachytene stage in accordance to chromosomal size, being the smallest chromosomes preferably observed in the nucleus periphery. On the other hand, several pieces of data suggest that gene activity is closely associated with the radial positioning of chromosomes throughout the spermatogenesis process. For instance, the nucleus interior presents a higher concentration of genetic material than the expected value. In addition, chromosomes with more number of genes involved spermatogenesis process or spermiogenesis (in the case of round spermatids), show more chromosomal volume in the middle-internal area of the nucleus. Finally, we have observed that sex chromosomes present a dynamic radial positioning during spermatogenesis, directly related to the transcriptional inactivation processes that they experience throughout the process. In relation to the relative positioning between chromosomes, the results showed that the interactions between chromosomes in the nucleus of germ cells and spermatozoa are not random, suggesting relevant functional implications. Even so, it has not been identified any factors that determine the relative position to the exception of the effect chromosome size at pachytene stage and round spermatids. Finally, it has also been concluded that the chromosome positioning in relation to the longitudinal axis of the sperm nucleus is not random, suggesting the importance of an ordered longitudinal positioning for the processes of release and activation of the paternal genome after fertilization.

Abstract:
The present research examines the conflicted position of university museums as part of an overarching institutional structure - the university -, but yet are also characterized, as a result of a wide range of uniquely museological traits, as peculiar institutions in their own right. The objective is to understand what university and university museums enunciate about their institutional rationality. The notion of territory and territorial action offer the possibility to develop a flexible but tight research frame for analyzing the relationship between both institutions. The research explores a case study: the relationship between the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM, National Autonomous University of Mexico} and the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporánea (MUAC, Contemporary Art University Museum). The thesis is divided in 7 chapters and 2 appendices. Chapter one is the introduction, chapter two presents a panorama of research field about university museums, chapter three looks towards Mexican context, and how university has been a key agent to the develepment of museological context in Mexico, chapter four delivers the theoretical framework that has being used, chapter five addresses MUAC origins, chapter six delivers the core analysis of the study case, chapter seven presents key findings and conclusions; appendix 1 offers an example of discourse analysis, and appendix 2 delivers the transcriptions of the interviews held with MUAC's staff.

Abstract: The territorial approach of development took an important place in the public politics of the State, also guiding the actions originated from different organizations of the society. The territorial focus, influenced by the analysis related to the industrial districts, is highlighted as a specific form to dealing with process and situations spatially delimited. In Brazil, the Secretária de Desenvolvimento Territorial, linked to the Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário, since 2003 has adopted it strategically trough the Programa Nacional de Desenvolvimento Sustentável dos Territórios Rurais ( Pronat). In 2008 occurs the implantation of the Programa Territórios da Cidadania, a part of the Pronat and of the rural development politic directed to the dynamization of the depressed territories constituted by small counties that cover rural and urban areas and activities, overcoming the focus on the rural world. The analysis of the assumptions underlying to the adoption of this strategy on the politic of the rural development in Brazil made trough the study of the constitution of the Território Integração Norte Pioeiro (PR), indicates that the focus of this politic falls more on the effectiveness of the decentralization than the concretization of the social management.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of the nature of Palestinian education under Israeli military occupation. Confidential interviews, currently available field research, and a theoretical background form the basis from which the author has constructed a picture of the nature of Palestinian education under occupation. The major topics covered include a political history of the Arab-Israeli conflict including the adoption of the internal colonialism theoretical perspective; an analysis of the relationship between colonialism and education; the special significance of education to the Palestinians and the Israelis; an outline of Palestinian education under occupation with particular reference to the post-1967 era; an account of Palestinian life under military occupation which details the inhumane treatment of Palestinian residents of the Occupied Territories by the Israeli military authorities and settlers; the revolutionary nature of the intifada; the targeting of Palestinian university staff and students by Israelis for especially harsh treatment; the massive Israeli crack-down on Palestinian formal and informal education and the implications for the Palestinians of the widespread and prolonged closures of Palestinian schools and universities. The author concludes that the Israeli authorities have specifically targeted Palestinian education as an area which they want to maintain close control over. The Israelis desire the Palestinian population (particularly in the occupied Territories) to have only limited, token educational opportunities, in order to keep them ignorant, and passive. During the intifada then, the Israelis have severely disrupted all levels of Palestinian education. Widespread school and university closures have been used by the Israelis to collectively punish the Palestinian community and hinder their chances of developing a strong independent Palestinian infrastructure which could become the foundation of a Palestinian state.

This Dissertation wants to contribute to a greater understanding of the artist CARMELA GROSS poetics through an approach that identifies plastic, historical and conceptual relations in her poetics territories. On the diversity of her works, Gross active mobile territories, in constant subjective definition of a poetic place, where the multiplicity symbolic of these territories operate in urban areas and museums as aesthetic games to be experienced. The artist builds through a set of experiences and poetics actions an own plastic vocabulary, in an artistic trajectory that reveals the constant search for new discoveries in plastic universe. By the artistic environment of the Gross formation, in the middle of 1960, in São Paulo, questions emerged and permeated her research throughout her journey, bringing aesthetic problems that instigate the undergoing and the experience of a singular artistic territory. Gross articulates discourses (potent and simple discourses) on contemporary art and society, expanding and contaminating both the environments of the museums (and art galleries) and the spaces of the cities. Therefore, the present research had as intent build a mapping which would contribute to expose the multiplicity of views and reflections as (provisional) understanding of the forces which acting in the poetics of Gross.

Abstract:
Research was conducted to better understand the food insecurity (FI) experience among women in a small indigenous Canadian Arctic community. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in January-February 2006 with 54 women (20-40 years). Interviews were conducted on food insecurity, lifestyle, health, dietary self-efficacy and traditional food (TF) frequency; anthropometry data were also gathered. FI affected 55% of participating households in the community. Issues of food availability, quality and variety; lack of consumer skills; and lack of TF access were recognized as potential barriers to food security. Women from FI households were more likely to report an inability to access TF (p=0.0171). No associations were found between food security status and dietary self-efficacy or TF frequency of use. Current measures, programs and policies addressing FI need to consider unique barriers facing Indigenous Peoples living in northern Canada, including the barriers that affect access to TF resources.

Cameron, James J. "Culture and change in the Northwest Territories : implications for community infrastructure planning." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24491.

Full text
Abstract:
Water and sanitation services play an important role in protecting public health and facilitating community growth. However, the choice of technology has significant implications for the social, economic and political development and autonomy of the community. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the objectives, process and content of planning water and sanitation services in communities in the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.). Relationships, issues and the decision making process are examined at the regional, local and infrastructure levels. Objectives for water and sanitation services are investigated to evaluate the link between knowledge and actions. Technical, economic and planning considerations are examined in the evaluation of policies and systems. Examination of objectives reveals that knowledge of relationships is insufficient to objectively establish a level of service policy or to select technology. Examination of water and sanitation planning in Native communities indicates that the N.W.T. Government establishes the objectives and criteria, conducts the planning studies, and is ultimately responsible for selecting, installing and operating the systems. Infrastructure planning is narrowly focused on the technical and economic considerations in the selection of technology. The values and perceptions of the Native people which the systems are meant to serve are neglected or downgraded. Examination of water and sanitation alternatives indicates that major factors in the evaluation of technology are water consumption, housing type, population, local employment opportunities, and self-reliance. Trucked water delivery and sewage pump out systems are an intermediate technology between rudimentary self-haul and sophisticated piped systems. Trucked systems provide high levels of service, flexibility and local employment and they facilitate local administrative, financial, political and physical control over community infrastructure. This thesis recommends that the N.W.T. Government devolve the resources, responsibility and authority for planning and managing water and sanitation services to the community level. The community should be the controller and the client in a planning process which emphasizes social learning and community development. The primary role of the N.W.T. Government should be to assist the people in assessing the conditions of their lives and community so that they can plan and alter these conditions for the better.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Thermokarst sedimentology is the study of the sedimentary processes and facies associated with thermokarst. Using facies analysis, oxygen isotopes and observations of processes in the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands, this thesis (1) classifies frozen ground according to its cryostructures and cryofacies; (2) describes thermokarst facies, facies associations and sedimentary structures; (3) examines the sedimentary processes associated with thermokarst; (4) proposes thermokarst facies models; and (5) proposes criteria for identifying thermokarst-modified sediments. The thermokarst sedimentary system of the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands comprises uplands, slopes and basins. Beneath ice-rich uplands, downwearing thermokarst produces a thick ($\le$c. 2.5m) thaw layer in which sediments melt-out from underlying permafrost. Ice-rich slopes are subdivided into steep icy slopes and retrogressive thaw slumps, the former occurring where the percentage of excess ice in upland materials is less than c. 30-40%, the latter where it exceeds this value. As slopes retreat by backwearing thermokarst, upland materials are redeposited by alluvial and colluvial processes. Thermokarst basins form where back- and downwearing thermokarst coincide. In deep non-oriented basins containing thermokarst lakes, three stages of basin infilling are identified. The first occurs during early and rapid basin expansion, when intense backwearing thermokarst at basin margins transports large quantities of upland materials into the basins. This pulse of resedimentation initiates sublacustrine benches. The second stage beings as the rate of basin expansion diminishes, reducing the influx of clastic sediment into lakes; thus the tops of sublacustrine benches are reworked and the main depositional process changes to suspension settling in basin centres. The final stage, commencing as lakes drain, involves basin infilling by peat accumulation and by gelifluction and aeolian deposition. Two sedimentary structures relating to thermokarst are frost-fissure pseudomorphs and thermokarst involutions. Frost-fissure pseudomorphs develop through thaw-modification processes: slow subsidence, thermal erosion, refreezing, loading, buoyancy, spreading, folding, shearing and mass movement. Thermokarst involutions form primarily by water-escape or by loading and buoyancy. Involutions within a thick palaeothaw layer probably reflect the massive scale of soft-sediment deformation that accompanies regional thermokarst, and they provide a potential analogue for some Pleistocene involutions in the mid-latitudes. Five criteria identify thermokarst-modified sediments in the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands: (1) organic-rich (and sandy) diamicton; (2) granular mud aggregates in stratified facies; (3) impure sand ($\pm$diamicton); (4) frost-fissure pseudomorphs; and (5) thermokarst involutions.

Covello, Elizabeth Jonquil. "The Northwest Territories reconstruction project : telling our stories." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24163.

Full text
Abstract:
Early travellers and adventurers in the Northwest Territories in their struggle to deal with the harshness of the land and the strangeness of the inhabitants were often unable to give a verbal shape to the landscape and the people beyond that of the familiar images of their European background. North became synonymous with alien, hostile, cold, barren, and mysterious and its people were identified alternatively as abject, heathen, filthy and sometimes dangerous savages or as paragons of noble manhood who served as examples for future imperializing ventures. I examine two travel narratives of the Northwest Territories and argue that a discourse of North, that was constructed from an imperialist, Eurocentric perspective failed to take into account the stories, the history and the culture of the indigenous people who lived there. I question the means by which such received history and knowledge becomes validated and empowering, while at the same time, other uncredentialed knowledge and stories which lack authority are lost. Warburton Pike wrote The Barren Ground of Northern Canada in 1892 and Agnes Deans Cameron wrote The New North in 1910. These works and others, while contributing to early knowledge of the indigenous people, were instrumental in framing an imaginary north that assumed hegemonic status over the geographical and cultural north that already existed. I then examine the works of two recent indigenous writers, George Blondin and Robert Alexie, who write back to Eurocentric constructions of north to validate their own histories and reclaim their land, not just in the physical sense of land claims but in ways which will give credence to their stories and their culture. I consider the role of stories and their power to preserve or destroy and I conclude with the hope that I can undertake a future work to examine in more detail the wealth of narrative available about the Northwest Territories.

Abstract:
This project, a thesis incorporating a 41,357 word textual commentary and related documentation of artwork, demonstrates and critically reflects upon a collaborative method of artmaking that addresses the following questions: Is it possible to reclaim communal space using trans-disciplinary art intervention and provide access for alternative contributors? How can temporary participatory art be used as an intervention into urban space and offer new forms of interactivity, engagement and critical awareness? These questions were addressed by critical reflection upon the development and outcomes of two projects that took place in Durban, South Africa and Turku, Finland. These cities were sites of global events, namely the FIFA World Cup in Durban, 2010, and the European Capital of Culture in 2011. These events and their branding facilitate unique forms of capital accumulation. I suggest that intervention at the site of these events is important in order to reclaim a temporary communal space for creative and critical inquiry. The artworks that I produced were temporary, site-specific urban interventions in public space using the insides and outsides of key buildings. The Durban projects were Street Child World Cup and Body Politic and, in Turku, Pallomeri and Meri Valvoo. The projects offered representation in public space in Durban for street children and, in Turku, experimental forms of engagement for the wider public. I argue that my method of participatory practice has wide-ranging potential for use by creative/scientific collaborations as an ethical/aesthetic model of temporary collaborative working. It effectively addresses problems around critical and creative access to urban public spaces outside of marketing/consumer discourses.

Abstract:
Whole genome comparison of metazoan genomes reveals extremely high level of noncoding conservation over tens to hundreds of base pairs across distant species. These sequences are termed as conserved noncoding elements (CNEs). Arrays of conserved noncoding elements that span the loci of developmental regulatory genes and their span defines regulatory genomic blocks (GRBs). CNEs are currently known to be involved in transcriptional regulation and development as long-range enhancers. However, no molecular mechanism can yet explain their exceptional degree of conservation. As a first step towards the genome-wide study of these elements, I developed two R/Bioconductor packages CNEr and TFBSTools, to detect and analyse regulatory elements. Next, I designed a novel CNE detection pipeline for duplicated regions in the ameiotic Adineta vaga genome. Identification of CNEs in this genome suggests that the principal function of CNEs is regulation of developmental gene expression rather than copy number sensing. In addition, I performed a de novo genome annotation of European common carp Cyprinus carpio. This genome stands as an ideal candidate for comparative study of zebrafish genome. Its analysis revealed a wealth of previously undetected fish regulatory elements and their unexpectedly high level of conservation between the two genomes. Finally, I presented a computational method for the identification of GRB boundaries and prediction of the corresponding target genes under long-range regulation. The predicted target genes are implicated in developmental, transcriptional regulation and axon guidance. The disruption of regulation of these target genes is likely to cause complex diseases, including cancer. The GRB boundaries and predicted target genes are valuable resource for investigating developmental regulation and interpreting genome-wide association studies.

"A controversial new development has recently been put up for debate within the discipline of Geology: Do current levels of human interaction in Earth's geology and atmosphere justify the proclamation of a new geological age or era: The Anthropocene? Entering a realm of scientific uncertainty and discourse, this thesis argues that the conceptualization of the Anthropocene (as a product of human ubiquity) yields the premise to summarize and critique a whole number of recent influential paradigm shifts and theoretical frameworks in architecture, which, in essence, address the relationship between the "man-made"and the "natural" The main hypothesis of this thesis is based on the assumption that principles of dirt and contamination (states of disorder) will replace principles of natural preservation and mythical naturality (seemingly ordered states) as the new primary vessel of meaning for the production of Anthropocene environment, architecture, ecology, society and culture. The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone will serve as a case study for investigating the Anthropocene condition."

Abstract:
This thesis focuses upon Clyde River Inuit knowledge, concerns, and attitudes to community tourism development and protected area establishment. The findings suggest that a cross-section of residents have a positive attitude toward community tourism development because it may provide local economic benefits. Residents also support the Igalirtuuq Conservation Proposal because it protects the endangered bowhead whale and its critical habitat, while at the same time stimulating tourism development. Clyde Inuit are reluctant to attribute social and environmental costs to these initiatives but are, nevertheless, able to point out some specific negative impacts that such projects might have on their village. Most felt that few problems would materialise as long as residents were intimately involved in all aspects of a controlled and gradual development. The study illustrates the importance of this type of community oriented approach in providing guidelines for tourism and conservation area development policy makers.

This work is part of the qualification process of the land tenure structure categories of DATALUTA – the Struggle for Land Database. Using this database, we analyzed the socio-territorial factors that resulted in changes in the land tenure structure of Mato Grosso from 1992 to 2008. Such effort is justified by the fact that between 1992 and 2003, Mato Grosso led the ranking of states that had the greatest expansion of agricultural areas, with 24,699,465.20 hectares, based on data from SNCR/Incra. The development of this work depended, in the initial stage, on the identification of areas of greatest expansion along with the average extension of these properties. In the second stage, we compared land tenure structure data with land use at the micro-regional scale. The third stage depended on the study of heavily-concentrated areas through a review of newspapers and scientific publications from the study period, along with the home pages of governmental and non-governmental organizations at municipal, state, and federal scales. In the fourth stage, we made an effort to abstract from reality in way that allowed us to understand this reality and its contradictions. Through the comparison of land tenure and land use data, we found that the areas of highest agricultural expansion coincide with regions where the soy agribusiness circuit is established or with agricultural frontier areas where the dynamic of soy is not yet present... Weeres, Scot David. "Development planning in the Northwest Territories : the case of tourism." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28342.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to argue that effective economic development planning cannot occur without integrating the planning, policy-making, and programme development processes. The Government of the Northwest Territories' tourism development planning efforts are examined and analysed in an effort to identify the determinants of successful development planning. For a number of decades economic development activity in the Northwest Territories has been based on non-renewable resource extraction. The result has been the creation of an unstable and dependent economy that largely serves the needs of non-residents. Increasingly Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), like other governments across Canada and around the world, has turned to development planning to deal with the instability and dependency problems that are an inevitable adjunct to non-renewable resource based economies. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has concluded that tourism can provide some protection from the economic storms that periodically sweep across the non-renewable resource based northern economy. A review of planning, policy, and programme theory indicated that while the three are different they are not discrete fields of study or activity. Rather, they are all integral parts of development planning. Thus, it is necessary, to examine not just government planning documents but also governmental policy and programmes, before commenting upon, and learning from, a government's development planning activities. This thesis has drawn information and examples from a variety of GNWT planning, policy, and programme sources relating to tourism development in the NWT. An examination of these documents and numerous unstructured interviews with those planning the development of the NWT's tourism sector have led to .the following findings: 1. The GNWT has assumed that tourism is an effective tool for diversifying and stabilizing the economy of the NWT. Indeed, it could be said that the GNWT has focused its hopes for an improved economic future on tourism. 2. The quantity and quality of information for planning collected by the GNWT has been 'inadequate'. No information on the tourism perceptions, desires and concerns of NWT residents was collected. 3. The Department of Economic Development and Tourism has recognized the shortage of data as a problem and has taken steps to address it. However, most new data being collected is marketing information with little relevance for policy and programme planning. 4. The goals and objectives of the NWT Tourism Strategy were drafted by technically oriented planners with access to little information on the perceptions, desires and concerns of NWT residents. The Strategy implicitly assumed that tourism would have a positive cost-benefit ratio, that increased tourism would diversify and stabilize the NWT's economic base, and that increased tourism would be well received in the small/remote communities of the Northwest Territories. 5. The GNWT's only formal statement of tourism development policy (the NWT Tourism Strategy) was articulated in Community Based' Tourism: A Strategy for the Northwest Territories Tourism Industry. 6. The GNWT used its Territorial Parks programme as a tool to foster tourism and spread its benefits across the NWT. 7. GNWT tourism planners and policy-makers have unquestioningly accepted the notion of "tourism [as] a desirable industry for the Northwest Territories", without exploring the long term implications of the striving for a tourism dependent economy. 8. The GNWT did not recognize/acknowledge that tourism was/is an export industry that may be subject to many of the unpredictable fluctuations that the primary industries were/are noted for. 9. The Northwest Territories is an example of a jurisdiction in which development planning, at least with regard to tourism development, has not occurred. By removing its planning efforts from the complex socio-economic reality of the Northwest Territories the GNWT's planning efforts can be said to be rational, but also top-down, and technocratic.

Lee, Chi-keung, and 李自強. "Pai-fang: gateways to history and socio-politics of indigenous villages in the New Territories." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50716074.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past few decades, there are quite a number of Pai-fangs built in the indigenous villages of the New Territories in Hong Kong and the number appears to be on the rise. The phenomenon of having so many pai-fangs in NT indigenous villages in Hong Kong could not be coincidental. They must be built as a result of some negotiation among different stakeholders – the villagers must agree, or at least do not object to the erection of pai-fang in their neighborhood; the government must also agree as they very likely take up government land and many different government departments need to be involved to build the structure. Pai-fang (牌坊) (literally archway) is a traditional form of Chinese architecture that is a physical gateway to a village. In the past few decades, there were quite a few pai-fangs built in the indigenous villages of the New Territories (NT)1 in Hong Kong and the number appeared to be on the rise. This kind of architecture neither provides physical accommodation for living or storage nor do they provide temporary shelter like a pavilion. In addition, the pai-fangs in Hong Kong are not aesthetically distinguished, especially when compared with those in Chinatowns or in the tourism spots in other countries. Nonetheless, they are increasingly popular in the NT indigenous villages in Hong Kong. It would appear that there are other reasons attributed to their origins and their increased popularity in Hong Kong other than their function or their aesthetic value. In a practical modern society like Hong Kong, when land and resource is scare, who would provide funding to build such architecture and who would find value in such architecture? The research issue is to address the phenomenon of pai-fang proliferation in the NT indigenous villages which may reflect some historical and socio-political factors in Hong Kong. Indeed, not much work has been done so far on researching pai-fangs in general in Hong Kong, not to mention research focusing on the recent trend in the increasing number of pai-fangs in the NT indigenous villages. Obviously, there is a gap in this area and this dissertation aims to cover the gap in this research by investigating into the reasons for the proliferation of pai-fang in NT indigenous villages, which may reflect some underlying historical and socio-political factors that are unique to Hong Kong. 1 For the sake of definition covered by this dissertation, the indigenous villages of New Territories exclude the indigenous villages in the Outlying Islands and New Kowloon. --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- ------------------------------------------------------------

Wainwright, Laura. "New territories in Modernism : Anglophone Welsh writing, 1930-1949." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55006/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to surmount the perennial critical neglect of literary Modernism in Wales through revealing and examining the Welsh Modernism of eight, key Anglophone Welsh writers. In chapters one, two and three, in which I examine work by Gwyn Thomas, Glyn Jones, Idris Davies, David Jones, Lynette Roberts and Vernon Watkins, I demonstrate how, in different ways, the linguistic experimentation of Welsh writers both reflects and constitutes their engagement with the potentially revolutionary, Modernistic conditions generated by unprecedented linguistic, social and cultural change in modern Wales. In chapter four, I draw a comparison between Dylan Thomas's use of rural Carmarthenshire, and Salvador Dalfs use of Cadaques, on the Catalonian coast, to create psycho-geographical spaces of Modernist transgression while in chapter five, I identify and explore similarly combative and progressive Modernist techniques specifically, of the grotesque in the work of Gwyn Thomas and Rhys Davies. I conclude that Welsh writing in English from 1930-1949 saw the emergence of a distinct, Welsh Modernism that challenges conventional literary histories and, in more than one sense, takes Modernism and Modernist studies into new territories.

Legarreta-Gonzalez, Martin Alfredo. "Spatial statistical methods in the reconstruction of badger territories." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19688/.

Full text
Abstract:
For decades, Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) have been the object of several studies trying to explain their primitive social organization, feeding, territory and lately, their relationship with bovine tuberculosis which can cost £1bn over the next 10 years. Badgers spend the day sleeping in their setts and foraging during the night. They live in clans, sharing and defending a communal territory but foraging and feeding individually. Several attempts to explain what influences the size and shape of badgers’ territories have been made, considering, for example whether they are determined by the dispersion of resources or by the location of the main sett which consists of several holes with large spoil heaps and obvious paths emanating from and between sett entrances. Since badgers use communal latrines to mark their territories, another approach is to use statistical methods based on this information to delineate their territories. A common method employed to reconstruct badger territories from latrines is the Min- imum Convex Polygon (MCP), another approach classifies the latrines as hinterland, boundary or extraterritorial excursions, based on elements surrounding them (fences, badgers paths, etc.). The use of extra information such as the presence of other latrines in the same direction from the main sett, can provide more robust models that can be used not only in a point estimation approach but in a sampling approach that uses the probability distribution fitted by a model and permits to quantify the uncertainty in the reconstruction of the territories. This thesis consists of 7 chapters: Chapter 1 is this Introduction. Chapter 2 is the literature review which looks at badger ecological behaviour, techniques used to obtain information about the territories of the badgers and methods used to reconstruct them. Chapter 3 is the Unconditional Outlier Prediction Model (UOPM). It is an extension of an unpublished paper that uses a logistic regression to estimate the probability that a latrine is part of the territory or, alternatively, is an extraterritorial excursion. This information is used with the 100% MCP to make the reconstructions. Chapter 4 talks about the Conditional Outlier Prediction Model (COPM), which is an extension to the UOPM that uses Gibbs sampling in the reconstruction of the territories to allow for dependance between latrines. This model uses the 100% MCP of the sampled latrines which are not outliers, in order to map the reconstructed territory at each iteration. Chapter 5 presents the Unadjusted Ordinal Model (UOM). This model uses the original classification from the 2010 baitmarking Woodchester Park Badger Survey made by the Food and Environmental Research Agency (FERA), applying a cumulative ordinal model to estimate the probability distribution fitted by the model using a sampling approach to reconstruct the territories. All the previous chapters employ information from only the territory being reconstructed; Chapter 6 adjusts the probabilities obtained by a territory and the territories sharing at least one latrine with it, to reconstruct the territory using a sampling approach. The last chapter discusses the results of the methods proposed in this research.

Wilkie, J. Callum. "Promoting innovation and economic growth in less developed territories." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2018. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3750/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about innovation and economic growth in less developed territories. It is motivated by the inadequacy of our understanding of innovation in lagging contexts. It is situated in the body of literature that examines and stresses the contextually contingent nature of innovation. It does, however, branch out to probe the link between innovation and economic performance and contemplate the design of strategic approaches to promote the latter. It is composed of an introduction, four related chapters and a short conclusion. Chapter 1 relies on an investigation of a large sample of North American and European regions to assess whether all less developed regions are, from an innovation perspective, functionally the same. In particular, it addresses the issue of what makes the less developed regions of North America more innovative than their European counterparts. Chapter 2 expands the scope of the thesis to include the emerging world. It unpacks the processes of innovation hosted by China’s more and less developed cities, respectively, with a view to identify and understand the differences between the sets of factors that drive and shape processes of innovation in them. Chapter 3 examines the relationship between innovation and economic performance in less developed regions. A comparison of two types of lagging regions in Europe is undertaken to explore the extent to which different types of economically disadvantaged regions are capable of transforming knowledge and innovation into economic dynamism, given their unique socioeconomic and institutional characteristics. Chapter 4 reflects on the strategic approaches that have been relied on to promote innovation and economic growth more generally. It reviews a handful of ‘strategies of waste’ and ‘of gain’ to ascertain insights into the steps policy-makers can take to maximise the likelihood that territorial development policies fulfil their potential and contribute to the reduction of territorial disparities.
