Abstract:
The Silesian conurbation consists of large amounts of terrains of uncertain status. Empty areas left after closed coal mines, ironworks, decommissioned working-class recreation zones or simply SLOAPS (Spaces Left Over After Planning) tend to be increasingly noticed by Silesian citizens nowadays and the experience of terrain vagues has become an important factor shaping their daily routine. The article covers the one, chosen distinct Silesian terrain vague location: the landscape park Żabie Doły (situated in municipalities of Bytom – Chorzow – Siemianowice Śląskie) in a quest to investigate the „unintentional landscape” as a place of different independent urban practices, undertaken by inhabitants. Terrain vague is being presented as an opportunity rather than a burden for a modern urban planning.

Abstract:
Selecting suitable underwater terrain navigation matching areas is a prerequisite for building an underwater terrain navigation database, which is important for vehicles operating underwater. By using information features to evaluate underwater terrain matching areas, vague sets are proposed to evaluate matching performance. Mathematical models of matching area features are built and topographic factor eigenvalues are obtained. With the topographic factor eigenvalues, fuzzy relationships between factor sets and judge sets are calculated. Vague set uses membership functions and non-membership functions to define the influence of topographic factor eigenvalues on matching suitability. Simulation results demonstrate that vague set theory can overcome the deficiency of single value in fuzzy sets and define the effect of geographic characteristics for matching performance. Based on vague set method, selection rules for terrain navigation matching areas in underwater terrain database are put forward.

Abstract:
The concept of terrain vague was first theorized by Ignasi de Sola-Morales in the mid 1990s as a contemporary space of project and design that includes the marginal wastelands and vacant lots that are located outside the city’s productive spaces – which Morales describes as oversights in the landscape that are mentally exterior in the physical interior of the city. Around the same time, the artist and architect collective Stalker defined Terrains Vagues in the plural as spaces of confrontation and contamination between the organic and the inorganic, between nature and artifice that constitute the built city’s negative, the interstitial and the marginal, spaces abandoned by economic forces, or in the process of transformation. This book Terrain Vague: Interstices at the Edge of the Pale – edited by the architect Manuela Mariani and the professor of English Patrick Barron - seeks to expand on Sola-Morales ideas and to present the terrain vague through a taxonomy of urban empty spaces presented by the authors in the introduction – derelict lands, brownfields, voids, loose spaces, heterotopias, dead zones, urban wilds, counter-sites. The book aims to collectively refine this notion as a central concept of urban planning and design, architecture, landscape architecture, film studies, cultural geography, literature, photography, and cultural studies, looking at possible positive alternatives to the negative images projected into them.

Abstract:
Abstract There have been many problems associated with underutilized areas in towns, although they also offer significant potential for urban renewal, especially in post-communist, post-socialist countries, where a series of key historical events has caused socio-economic and political changes leading to urban decay. The underlying feature of unused areas is their apparent abandonment, absence of use, lack of identity but high potential. However, not all unused areas should be labelled as brownfields; therefore, we studied the terms commonly used to describe underutilized areas. We chose the term terrain vague to map and describe all apparently empty but still intriguing spaces in our model towns of Humenné, Strážske and Vranov and Topľou, in eastern Slovakia. Our paper aims to create a typology of terrain vague to better understand its manifestation in our conditions. It also aims to determine the causes that led to its emergence or as we call it the emergence mechanisms, in the context of post-industrial small and middle-sized towns in Slovakia. We combined field survey and desktop analysis methods to map terrain vague based on set criteria. We evaluated mapped terrain vague and, using the data, created a typology of terrain vague consisting of nine types and identified three key emergence mechanisms and their subcategories. We based them on commonly used terms that fit within the specific context of our model towns. By using the new typology and emergence mechanism, we can identify patterns running along towns with similar backgrounds that result in similar problems and develop solutions accordingly. Results of our research could be generalized and serve as a basis for future research aimed at finding strategies for revitalizing terrain vague in shrinking post-industrial towns facing different problems than prosperous cities.

Abstract:
As the third largest city in Mexico, Monterrey is a manufacturing hub that offers a provocative counterpoint to industrial cities in developed countries. Suburban sprawl, political instability, violence, social injustice, and de-industrialization illustrate increasing fragmentation—or terrain vague—where the conventional urban fabric unravels and less formal occupancies unfold. Defined by Catalan architect and theorist Ignasi Solà-Morales, terrain vague is expressed through obsolescence and various organic practices that react to depopulation and under-productivity. Investigating production and city-building, this article positions post-industrial Monterrey as a place of difference reflecting hybridized Latin American and American normative conditions. It surveys processes of industrialization and changing technology to situate iconic European and American architectural and urban precedents as forerunners of similar conditions in Monterrey.

Abstract:

Discourse analysis has been defined in various ways but it seems the more the definitions increase, the more elusive and vague the concept becomes. The prevalent and preponderant meanings associated with discourse analysis emanating from its scope and interdisciplinary nature subsequently informing how the discipline is defined and conceptualised has consequently made imperative, the need to map out its terrain in order to narrow down the range of meaning and usage possibilities. The analyst should concentrate on those features that contribute to textual coherence. This paper has attempted to highlight the fundamentals of discourse analysis. shape its propensity and clear its controversies so that the discipline would be better appreciated.

With all this, a specific work proposal on the playground in unattended urban environments is conceptually defined, which joins the multispecies agenda and helps to enrich the institutional programs from which the rewilding of cities is being regulated. Finally, the article defines the potential that this proposal contains in a specific Third Landscape in the city of Alcalá de Henares, which allows the evaluation of the enunciated practice.

Abstract:
This article aims to act as a general literature review regarding the landscape, analyzing it through a synthesis of the main concepts and processes that have generated, and subsequently developed, the word “Landscape”. It is a versatile theme, because it has always been studied by various disciplines, through different theories, which sometimes even conflict with each other. Through the present text, we understand the importance and the unique value of the landscape, a value that has nowadays been transfigured by the strong industrialization and strong brand of man in the territory. Thus, the first part of the research is, to some extent, a reflection on current issues that are related to the landscape. It is also a tool for integration, including in the definition of “Landscape”, even those heavily humanized, exploited, degraded, abandoned, and residual; the so-called “Drosscape”, “Friche”, and “Terrain Vague”. The solution is not to negatively interpret these types of scenarios, but rather to enhance them as they are, filled with potential and creativity. This concept is achieved by means of an operation of recycling or reuse of waste, which is capable of germinating new life cycles within the “dead nature” of our increasingly cemented territories.

A landform is an area of a terrain with its own recognisable shape. Its definition is often qualitative and inherently vague. Hence landforms are difficult to formalise in view of their extraction from a DTM. This paper presents a two-level framework for the representation of landforms. The objective is to provide a structure where landforms can be conceptually designed according to a common model which can be implemented. It follows the principle that landforms are not defined by geometrical characteristics but by salient features perceived by people. Hence, these salient features define a skeleton around which the landform is built. The first level of our model defines general concepts forming a landform prototype while the second level provides a model for the translation of these concepts and landform extraction on a DTM. The model is still under construction and preliminary results together with current developments are also presented.

Abstract:
This paper assesses trending AI foundation models, especially emerging computer vision foundation models and their performance in natural landscape feature segmentation. While the term foundation model has quickly garnered interest from the geospatial domain, its definition remains vague. Hence, this paper will first introduce AI foundation models and their defining characteristics. Built upon the tremendous success achieved by Large Language Models (LLMs) as the foundation models for language tasks, this paper discusses the challenges of building foundation models for geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) vision tasks. To evaluate the performance of large AI vision models, especially Meta’s Segment Anything Model (SAM), we implemented different instance segmentation pipelines that minimize the changes to SAM to leverage its power as a foundation model. A series of prompt strategies were developed to test SAM’s performance regarding its theoretical upper bound of predictive accuracy, zero-shot performance, and domain adaptability through fine-tuning. The analysis used two permafrost feature datasets, ice-wedge polygons and retrogressive thaw slumps because (1) these landform features are more challenging to segment than man-made features due to their complicated formation mechanisms, diverse forms, and vague boundaries; (2) their presence and changes are important indicators for Arctic warming and climate change. The results show that although promising, SAM still has room for improvement to support AI-augmented terrain mapping. The spatial and domain generalizability of this finding is further validated using a more general dataset EuroCrops for agricultural field mapping. Finally, we discuss future research directions that strengthen SAM’s applicability in challenging geospatial domains.

Abstract:
- We are all too familiar with the failure to appreciate urban public spaces and the splintering of the latter that has resulted as the cities have spread outwards. There are many conceptual implications of this type of interstitial space. The notion of ‘in-between' has been treated from to a wide range of perspectives. From an initial meaning of terrain vague, i.e. an abandoned but not necessarily barren area, one moves on to an interesting cultural approach which interprets these peripheral zones as a new wilderness, a ‘dirty' second or third level reality that goes hand in hand with the concept of urban ‘pore' or ‘porosity', understood not only in the physical- settlement sense, but also in sociological terms (Lévesque, 2001-2003). A further related concept is that of liminal space (Paredes, 2005), an ‘interstitial passage' between ‘fixed identities' (Heidegger, 1950). Finally, the ‘space of flows' character of this particular spatial category has been noted by various commentators and has been linked, both in architecture and urban planning, with hybridity and/or hybridisation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Numerous recent studies have shown that ticks and tick-borne pathogens pose a considerable threat in urban areas, such as parks, playgrounds, zoos, cemeteries, etc. Abandoned postindustrial localities, and other types of vague terrain, are other examples of urban wilderness areas that have been absolutely neglected in respect to ticks and tick-borne pathogens thus far, even though they provide ideal biotopes for ticks. Methods: The abundance of ticks and prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochetes were compared between a city park and an adjacent abandoned construction waste disposal site in Prague, Czechia from June to October 2021. Results: The results showed that ticks and borrelia spirochetes are present at the city park as well as at the abandoned construction waste disposal site, although in lower numbers. Discussion: According to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the presence of ticks and tick-borne pathogens in an urban postindustrial landscape. More detailed studies are needed to uncover the role of these localities in the ecology of ticks and ecoepidemiology of tick-borne diseases in urban areas.

Abstract:
Even though the volume of trade in goods and service increases in some advanced economy countries, trade in cultural goods and services remain in neglected terrain within multilateral frameworks. WTO has indeed highlighted the importance of cultural goods’ protection; however, its meaning and scopes, terms of protection, and dispute settlement on cultural goods and services have remained vague. On the other hand, UNESCO shed some lights on the trade of cultural goods and services, but some of the articles in its convention arises some contradiction with WTO clauses. The cases presented in this paper are all related to the culture trade, namely Canada for a periodical case (DS31), Turkey’s taxation of foreign film (DS43), Canada’s case on film distribution service (DS117), and China’s case on publications and audiovisual products (DS363). This paper aims to analyze how those cases were handled in the dispute settlement of WTO and supposed to be handled by both UNESCO and WTO. I would like to draw some lessons from the inadequate dispute settlement in WTO on culture trade, then proceed to formulate some suggestions of how cultural trade-related disputes are supposed to be formulated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
THE HARBOUR AND THE HETEROGENEOUS URBAN. NORDHAVN READ ON THE BASIS OF BATAILLES HETEROLOGYThis article deals with the revitalisation of post-industrial waterfronts on the basis of the French philosopher Georges Bataille’s concept of the heterogeneous. Using the northern harbour area in Copenhagen (Nordhavn) as its analysis site, the article investigates the way in which a heterologically based position can be introduced into urban space-making, pointing to a different urban ideal and the possibility of including something formless and wholly other in the conventional development process. Based on Bataille’s heterology, Nordhavn can predominantly be considered a radically different urban space on a spatial, reflexive and socio-cultural level. The harbour area can be characterised on the basis of four spatial types (ruin, shed, accumulation monument and terrain vague), each expressing aheterogeneous aesthetic identity as something more or less excluded, non-ideal, and entropy- and waste-like. The heterogeneous typology thus establishes the experience of a progressive spatial formlessness, as well as emphasising the aesthetic and cultural potential in urban wastelands. In this sense, the heterogeneous urban environment underlines the importance of the procedural, non-planned, unexpected, other and hybrid in relation to the current discussions about how to create a vibrant urban space. In the age of gentrification, wall-to-wall city design and homogenised waterfronts, a heterogeneously inspired urbandevelopment may thus generate an alternative aesthetic strategy leading towards a more value-pluralistic city.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a novel measurement approach for wheel-terrain contact angle using laser scanning sensors based on near-terrain perception. Laser scanning sensors have rarely been applied to the measurement of wheel-terrain contact angle for wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) in previous studies; however, it is an effective way to measure wheel-terrain contact angle directly with the advantages of simple, fast and high accuracy. Design/methodology/approach First, kinematics model for a WMR moving on rough terrain was developed, taking into consideration wheel slip and wheel-terrain contact angle. Second, the measurement principles of wheel-terrain contact angle using laser scanning sensors was presented, including “rigid wheel - rigid terrain” model and “rigid wheel - deformable terrain” model. Findings In the proposed approach, the measurement of wheel-terrain contact angle using laser scanning sensors was successfully demonstrated. The rationality of the approach was verified by experiments on rigid and sandy terrains with satisfactory results. Originality/value This paper proposes a novel, fast and effective wheel-terrain contact angle measurement approach for WMRs moving on both rigid and deformable terrains, using laser scanning sensors.

Abstract:
AbstractWe examine Thomas Piketty's explanations for steady and rising inequality in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the decline of inequality in the half-century after World War I, and the return of high levels of inequality since the 1970s. We specify empirical and conceptual problems with his analysis, which stem from his presentation of causality at a highly general and vague level. That leads him to confuse rather than clarify the causal relations among implacable economic forces, changes in technological innovation and population growth, ideology, and governmental policies and the outcomes that he seeks to explain. We identify social scientists and historians who are able to account for temporal and geographic variations in the political coalitions that propelled egalitarian reforms, and that in their absence cleared the terrain for reactionary anti-egalitarian policies that the rich incited for their narrow benefit. We explain why Piketty's limited conception of ideology is insufficient for explaining how mass opposition to inequality is mobilized. We show that if we want to combine the study of capital in the twenty-first century with that of politics, we need a broader conception of ideology than what Piketty offers, one that will allow us to specify how ideology affects parties, states, voters, and activists.

Abstract:
The essay ‘Other Interpretations on Tower H’ is the result of a keen interest in exploring the multiple interpretative possibilities concerning a specific abandoned residential building in Rio’s Barra da Tijuca district. Tower H was part of modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer’s ‘Centro da Barra’ project (1969), developed in this up-and-coming neighbourhood at that time. The research for this text began in 2021, while the tower was under structural inspection. As a result of it, I identified ‘ambiguous’ and ‘open’ aspects of the building that relate to Ignasi de Solà- Morales’ terrain vague concept. The recent demolition of the tower’s sealing surface and the subsequent excavation of a landfilled area next to the tower have changed the city’s perception and memory fluxes of the building: from the past to the present; from closed to exposed interiors; from covered to excavated landfilled sand that was buried since the tower construction. All of this brings back memories of the neighbourhood’s landscape not only during the presence of this imposing building but also prior to its existence. A photographic experiment promoted a tactical experience inside this enigmatic architectural object. Additionally, it analysed displacement operations from the last two years, allowing new interpretations on this landmark.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Megacities and rapidly urbanizing territories are contemporary issues which have now reached international attention and institutional recognition. Megacities and rapidly urbanizing territories in Southeast Asia especially are subject to both intensive and extensive patterns of growth that are reflected by the dynamics of densification in consolidated urban areas and loss of agricultural lands due to development in peri-urban areas. The New Urban Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an international shared understanding of policies and knowledge to tackle, among other issues, loss of agricultural land, general land use management, segregation and inequalities within megacities and rapidly urbanizing regions. However, oftentimes, this international level of policy-making loses its strength when the urban issues are scaled down to local applications. Influenced by the presence of local private interests and global economic forces, the local urban processes of intensive and extensive growth appear to be detached from the general international policy framework and affected by site-specific dynamics. This article examines the level of this separation in Bangkok, especially in regards to a specific kind of the aforementioned intensive growth at the metropolitan scale, the development of the urban voids - terrain vague. I discuss how this separation is more evident in those empty, underused, and abandoned areas where possible intensive developments could happen. Furthermore, I evaluate this separation by reflecting on how it can affect the upcoming future of the megacity of Bangkok.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the adaptability of the tracked robot in complex working environment. It proposes an angle-changeable tracked robot with human–robot interaction in unstructured environment. The study aims to present the mechanical structure and human–robot interaction control system of the tracked robot and analyze the static stability of the robot working in three terrains, i.e. rugged terrain, sloped terrain and stairs. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents the mechanical structure and human–robot interaction control system of the tracked robot. To prevent the detachment of the tracks during obstacle navigation, a new type of passively adaptive device based on the relationship between the track’s variable angle and the forces is presented. Then three types of rough terrain are chosen to analyze the static stability of the tracked robot, i.e. rugged terrain, sloped terrain and stairs. Findings This paper provides the design method of the tracked robot. Owing to its appropriate dimensions, good mass distribution and limited velocity, the tracked robot remains stable on the complex terrains. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the design method. Originality/value The theoretical analysis of this paper provides basic reference for the structural design of tracked robots.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to gain the real-time terrain parameters of the battlefield for the evaluation of military vehicle trafficability. In military missions, improvements in vehicle mobility have the potential to greatly increase the military operational capacity, in which vehicle trafficability plays a significant role. Design/methodology/approach – In this framework, an online terrain parameter estimation method based on the Gauss-Newton algorithm is proposed to estimate the primary terrain mechanical parameters. Good estimation results are indicated, unless the initial values involved are properly selected. Correspondingly, a method of terrain classification is then presented to contribute to the selection of the initial values. This method uses the wavelet packet transform technique for feature extraction and adopts the support vector machine algorithm for terrain classification. Once the terrain type is identified, advices can be given on the initial value selection referring to the empirical terrain parameters. Findings – On the basis of a dynamic testing system suitable for real military vehicles, the proposed algorithms are validated. High estimation accuracy of the terrain parameters is indicated on sandy loam, and good classification performance is demonstrated on four tested terrains. Originality/value – The presented algorithm outperforms the existing methods, which not only realizes the online terrain parameter estimation but also develops the estimation accuracy. Moreover, its effectiveness is confirmed by real vehicle tests in practice.
