Abstract:

Abstract:
In 2019, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) prescribed guidelines to standardize the user interface (UI) of navigation equipment such as radio detection and ranging (RADAR) and the electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), which mandate the unification of various terminologies and icons to improve usability. However, comprehensive studies on the operability and standardization of global positioning system (GPS) plotters, which are auxiliary equipment installed across various domestic and commercial vessels for navigational purposes, have not been conducted. Therefore, we performed a case study to identify the user requirements for standardizing the UI of GPS plotters in South Korea. Additionally, we conducted a survey to ascertain the frequency of use of the navigational functions in a GPS plotter, in which, several deck officers and captains participated. The frequently used navigational functions that were subsequently identified confirmed the need for standardization of the UI. Furthermore, the users requested the standardization of the menus of these functions using Korean terminologies. Hence, we attempted to derive standardized items that can be applied to both the functions of the GPS plotters and the navigation information obtained, which can contribute to the improvement of the UI across the different types of plotters.

Abstract:
The Cyclades islands in the South Aegean initially attracted the attention of prehistorians approaching islands as ‘laboratories’ for the study of cultural development, examining the notions of ‘isolation’ and ‘connectivity’, or, more recently, by introducing new terminologies, such as ‘seascape’ and ‘islandscape’. The wealth of material remains of the post-medieval era in the Cyclades islands (e.g., ecclesiastical architecture, ceramics) and the textual record available (e.g., Ottoman tax registers, travellers’ accounts) provide fascinating evidence regarding the construction of sacred landscapes, self-expression, community, and maritime identities throughout the period of Ottoman domination. The main aim of this article is to examine the historical contingencies and the distribution of a vast number of rural churches, primarily as evidence for religious expression, in order to capture island dynamics and the formation of religious and community identities, as imprinted onto the sacred landscapes of the island of Paros. By shifting our focus from the imperial Ottoman to the local Cycladic, we come to appreciate islanders as decisive agents of their maritime identities, creating rituals and sacred spaces, sometimes beyond the strict borders of institutional religion.

Abstract:

The spice route is one of the important issues going forward by the Government of Indonesia, to make Indonesia a world maritime axis, this issue is not just a textual discourse, but the issue of the spice route is one of the visions and missions of the Joko Widodo Government in Nawacita to apply it. Historical terminology from various studies from the 7th century to pre-independence, of course, with the scope of this study, it becomes a benchmark for reviewing the issue of the spice route, not historical studies but other studies that can add to the wealth of knowledge about the spice route. Media research in a historical perspective with historical issues in Indonesia has not been widely studied, one of which is the study of the spice route. The researcher tries to see the spice route in the construction of the online media Kompas historical perspective, using the content analysis method, which consists of several stages: 1. Data collection on the spice route news in the online media Kompas from 2017-2021, 2. Source criticism. 3. Interpretation of the spice path in the online media construction of Kompas, by conducting intensive literature and documentation studies, which are descriptive in content analysis, aiming to describe or explain what online news is, it must reach the explanation stage. Indicators from the analysis content are described, such as heuristics, sources, and historical writing contained in the Kompas online media coverage themes. In many paper and discussions, the term of "nautical" and "maritime" are always exchanged to the term of sea. but there is also another meaning of it in certain terminologies. The word of "maritime" bas another meaning instead of the sea. Additionally, the word of "nautical" has another word, that is about time dimension and tradition. This article will explain the sorting and the choosing of these two words as a means of properly using it, either conceptually or substantially. At this point, ''rmaritime'' is used for a state (maritime state), while "nautical" is related to culture (nautical culture).

Abstract:
Abstract The development of terminologies for domains where these are lacking is a time-consuming and costly task. This article takes a methodological perspective and addresses a general methodological question: how can we, with limited funding, utilise to a maximal degree, existing language resources to create a terminology at a relatively low cost? Although an important player in the maritime industries for many centuries, Norway has not prioritised the systematic development of an official maritime terminology. The article therefore focuses specifically on efforts to develop a national resource for maritime domains. The article describes efforts to create a corpus of popular science and a parallel corpus of technical texts. Six different term extraction methods are applied. These include corpus-based statistical analyses of frequency, collocation and keyness, as well as bilingual term extraction. Finally, the pros and cons of each method are evaluated by means of a cost-benefit analysis.

Abstract:
Our thesis project is to study maritime specialized terminology in two countries of the Middle East, Syria and Lebanon. It traces the general history of the language and its role in the Arab countries in general and in Syria and Lebanon in particular. This work shows that the evolution of marine sciences has given rise to many new words for the new realities and discoveries. But languages do not have the same tools to meet the scientific challenges, and Arabic shows failed facing the proliferation of all these new terms. It discusses the problems of the Arab scientific term deal with the advance of anglicisms in scientific fields. Arabic creates words by conventional modes of lexical creations, while its scientific terms are mostly created by layer or translation of other languages such as English or French. Research in Syria and Lebanon helped develop a comparison on the teaching of science subjects, and draw conclusions in order to improve education in Syria. In this work, a hundred of terminology records of maritime terms are designed to help translators and terminologists. We have the idea of taking ground on this research to prepare our future project, a trilingual maritime glossary (English, French, Arabic) that encompasses the different terms of maritime activities

Alhazmi, Muhammad Zafer S. "Maritime terminology of the Saudi Arabian Red Sea coast." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/17923.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will analyse a sample of maritime terminology used along the Saudi Red Sea coast and attempt to understand why lexica are lacking in such terms; an issue which can be linked to the language change was a consequence of the interaction between Arabs and other ethnic communities since the advent of Islam. This change raised alarm among lexicographers and linguists at the time of documenting the terminology, who set off on long journeys to collect the pure language. In their word collecting they selectively documented the language, ignoring a huge amount of spoken registers because their aim was to collect the classical form of Arabic in order to help Muslims gain a deeper understanding of the Qur>[n and |ad\th. This created gaps in Arabic lexicography, which lacks terminology for material culture. The information about maritime material cultural terminology in the mainstream lexica is disappointing. Although a few terms are listed, lexicographers have failed to provide unambiguous definitions. This study demonstrates why a great number of such terms since the classical time period has not been listed in the available lexica, and what the factors are which led to this situation. Hence, this study is based on maritime terms extracted from informal meetings I had with mariners and fishermen on the Red Sea Saudi coast about their life at sea before the introduction of the engine to vessels. The collected terms are to be investigated against their presence in lexica both synchronically and diachronically. Understanding the meanings of such ignored terms is one of the most important puzzles and this study attempts to solve it by investigating the semantic links between words and the conceptual meanings of their roots following a hypothesis based on Ibn F[ris (d. 395/1004); which assumes that all terms derived from Arabic roots should share a general conceptual meaning. While in the absence of maritime terms in lexica a hypothesis devised from Agius's theoretical framework was applied to search such terms in literary and non-literary works, which assumed to be an alternative source to lexica and examine their occurrence in text and context by reconstructing their origin, function and use.

Abstract:
B: Bergamo, Biblioteca Civica “Angelo Mai”, ms. MA334, Libro de navegar [XIVex.], cc. 111; (ii). L: Londra, British Library, Cotton ms., Titus A XXVI, Taccuino di Zorzi Trombetta da Modone [1444-1449], cc. 61; (iii). F: Firenze, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, ms.
The research project is composed of two main parts: the first one consists of a corpus of shipbuilding texts from several fifteenth-century zibaldoni of the Venetian area, the second part is composed by the systematic study of their technical naval vocabulary. The texts composing the corpus are collections of rules for the construction of certain types of boats, labeled as raxon de fabricar. This texts are collected in merchant notebooks and zibaldoni which contain a considerable amount of heterogeneous materials, spacing from lunar calendars or medical prescriptions, to mathematical problems and rates. From this corpus we obtained the list of entry words, in particular each headword presents: a) a first section about the history of the word in ancient Italian and Venetian, aiming to create an enhancing tool about the medieval maritime lexical heritage, recovering words not otherwise attested and providing new data related to the history of the known lexical material; b) a second section dedicated to the comparison of documented words in the western Mediterranean with the aim of emphasizing the lexical correspondences between the Venetian, Catalan, Provençal and Genoese naval vocabularies.

Abstract:
Whether engaged in design, construction, maintenance or operations activities, Naval Architects and Marine Engineers are continually engaged in negotiation and decision making. However, very little formal negotiation and decision-making training exists for NAMEs, despite the fact that in recent decades there have been significant developments in the game theory field. These developments in game theory have resulted in a standardized terminology and provide theoretical and mathematical concepts that, when adopted in the maritime community, could provide significant advantages to the initiated professional. This paper provides introductions to game theory concepts that have immediate application to typical activities that NAMEs are engaged in on a day-to-day basis. Application of these concepts can result in better and more rapid decision making and assists in the disentanglement of technical and operational problems when they occur. Understanding of these concepts can be as vital as oral and written communication skills for engineers to be able to successfully achieve their technical objectives for the client’s and the public’s best interests. This paper presents these concepts at an introductory level and provides several maritime examples, but also provides a substantial amount of references and a bibliography to allow further study on the subject. Game theory concepts discussed in this paper include the Prisoner’s Dilemma, Tit for Tat, the Nash equilibrium, BATNA, Pareto optimality, and the OODA loop.

Abstract:
E-learning Maritime English course-piloting stage First, the need for Maritime English within the shipping industry will be emphasized with special reference to the multicultural crews on board ships, which may lead to serious maritime disasters due to poor Maritime English knowledge. Most incidents at sea are the result of communication problems, therefore, great attention should be paid by MET (Maritime Education and Training) institutions to the Maritime English teaching and learning. There is a strong need for collaboration between these institutions and the seafarer recruiting agencies to find the right solutions for implementing the STCW10 (Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping) and IMO (International Maritime Organisation) competence requirements regarding the knowledge and use of Maritime English, both orally and in writing. Then, the content and structure of the traditional Maritime English course will be presented. The course book has been designed in accordance with the STCW'10 Convention and IMO Model Course 3.17 requirements. The specialist disciplines, i.e. seamanship fundamentals and navigation fundamentals have also been taken into account in selecting the topics and technical terminology to be taught. Next, the conversion of the traditional course into an e-learning format will be explained and demonstrated. There will also be pointed out the advantages of this format as compared with the traditional one, i.e. a huge data base and permanent topic upgrading possibility, the students studying at their own pace both in the resource center and at home, teachers involved in less paper work, but in more creative learning resources development, etc. Finally, the partial results of the piloting stage will be displayed and commented upon.

Abstract:
The shipping industry has become more and more demanding as far as the General and Maritime English are concerned. This is due to the fact that most merchant ships are owned by foreign companies and manned by multinational crews who need to be competent to communicate in English orally and in writing. In this respect, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and the STCW'95 (Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping) convention and code imposed a number of requirements regarding the seafarers' Maritime English knowledge and adequate use. As a result of the international maritime bodies' requirements, the SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases) has become mandatory for the shipping industry worldwide. The SMCP is a comprehensive standardized safety language, precise, concise, simple and unambiguous so as to avoid confusion and error. It consists of a set of terms, definitions, phrases used on board ships, for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. Therefore, the MET (Maritime Education and Training) teachers have to meet the challenge of designing attractive and efficient courses to motivate their students to acquire more easily and in a more pleasant way the maritime terminology. It seems that the solution would be the on-line courses which are becoming more and more popular with the 21st century students. Last year we piloted the first year deck cadet on-line course, which was originally a traditional class course-book. At the end of the course, we administered a course evaluation form, which the majority of the students filled in. After analysing the learners` commentaries and suggestions, we revised some of the units and added on more information. In a learner-centred type of education it is very important to involve the learners in teaching/learning materials or even course design. This makes them more responsible for the learning process and more willing to achieve success. In this paper we will present the students` and teachers` feedback on the e-learning course revised version presently in progress in the 2014-2015 academic year.

Abstract:
This paper revolves around the development of an online visual dictionary with a view to improving lexical acquisitions in maritime contexts. Undoubtedly, technological advances in computer technology have led to increased speed in accessing information and processed data; therefore, we deem it appropriate to consider first what online dictionaries may bring to the study of the English vocabulary, that is to facilitate both access to and use of the information contained therein. Indeed, the possibility of automatic processing and research of a term in an index is one of the greatest advantages of electronic dictionaries as compared to their paper format counterparts. Furthermore, the visual support - pictures or illustrations - is essential to language learners since it compensates for the definition alone when purely linguistic means are insufficient to explain a particular word or when they produce too difficult a definition. Taking this context into account, the Maritime English Visual Dictionary was conceived within the Sectorial Plan of Research and Development (PSCD) and its importance is backed up by the lack of such a teaching/learning material on the specialized book markets; therefore, the benefits brought about by the project outcome involve supplementing the traditional methods of teaching/learning maritime English through the production of e-learning teaching aids as well as developing learners' capacity for long-term storage of maritime terminology. The project is based on an html format program and contains the following fields: the English word, its explanation, its translation and the corresponding picture. It is hosted on the Naval Academy platform since it is intended as a useful resource for both classroom use and self study.

Abstract:
The first Royal Navy Destroyer for over 20 years is due to enter service in 2007. The base design for fire protection of the main machinery space (first shot) and Gas Turbine enclosure is by a carbon dioxide total flooding system. Ministry of Defence policy precludes the use Halon as part of the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on new construction ships. Carbon dioxide although the preferred solution for the T45 Destroyer is inherently toxic and places large demands on storage areas and makes this far from the ideal solution. Since 2001, the T45 Destroyer Warship Integration Team has been advancing the testing of two pyrotechnically generated aerosol systems as a replacement for carbon dioxide systems. Large-scale tests of aerosol agents were carried out at Darchem Flares IMO facility (internal dimensions 10m × 10m × 5m high) near Darlington, UK. The test programme was loosely based around the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) MSC/Circ. 1007 protocol but with greater amounts of clutter in the facility and more representative of a warship’s machinery space. Fire scenarios were also modified to make them more representative of naval circumstances with the pass criteria as specified in IMO MSC/Circ 1007 specification: • Class B fires extinguished within 30 seconds; • 15 minute hold period (no re-ignition); • fuel spray shut off 15 seconds after fire extinguishment; • at the end of hold period fuel spray should be restarted for 15 seconds with no re-ignition evident; • at the end of the test fuel trays must have sufficient fuel remaining to cover bottom of tray. In addition to the large-scale testing aerosol fire testing was conducted on a faithful replica of a Gas Turbine enclosure. The GT mock-up enclosure was designed to replicate in service thermal and airflow conditions within the gas turbine enclosure prior to the fire scenario and release of the agent. A hazard assessment was carried out by a focus group to determine expected fire conditions within the enclosure and these were replicated in a number of fire tests to evaluate the performance of the aerosols. Although derived from a common background and described by common terminology, very stark performance differences were found between the two systems tested. This paper will describe the test facility, tests carried out, performance result’s and proposed future use of pyrotechnic fire suppression aerosols within the Royal Navy.
