Full textThe white coat effect (WCE) has been known for many years. Its diagnosis is made difficult by the multiple blood pressure measurements to be carried out (in clinic and outpatient). In addition, its cardiovascular influence is poorly understood. In this context, we have developed a concept of office white coat effect tail (OWCET), making it possible to reduce the number of blood pressure measurements to be carried out (in clinic only). It is well correlated with the WCE and less with white coat hypertension. Its cardiovascular impact is significant, especially in women, making EBBR a full-blown cardiovascular risk factor. The recommendations should better understand the WCE to improve its management in clinical practice

Full textThe environmental conflicts arise from the need for economical and social development and from the consequent use of natural resources. When these natural resources were becoming scarce, the existing development models started to be criticized, culminating with the definition of sustainable development in 1987. A contribution for the implementation of sustainable development is the resolution of environmental conflicts by alternative approaches, with the consensus building. The brazilian juridical ordainment ascribe to the public ministry characteristics and tools that allow the use of these approaches in the environmental conflicts resolution. By means of civil inquest, exclusive tool for the institution, and the conduct adjustment term, the justice prosecutor attain the environmental conflicts resolution without the interference of the judiciary. Beside the tools, a characteristic of the public ministry that is favorable to the use of such approaches is the social credibility of the institution. This work tries to prove, based on the experience of the environmental prosecutor office from the city of Sao Carlos SP, the effectiveness of environmental conflicts resolution by means of the consensus building by using these tools. To reach this objective, a thorough research was carried out, from 2001 through 2004, in the data electronically recorded from the civil inquests and conduct adjustment terms. In this period, a number of hearings and inspections carried out by the assigned justice prosecutor were followed. In addition, many interviews with representatives from environmental management and surveillance institutions and non governmental organizations were done. The results show that the use of civil inquest together with the conduct adjustment term solve the greatest part of environmental conflicts. The successful use of such tools avoids the intervention of both the judiciary and the civil public action, resulting in a greater consciousness from both the civil society and government, reducing thereby time and costs associated with the negotiations, as the greatest part of the conflicts is solved in one year and a half, allowing the reparation of the harm in viable time, thus enabling the antecipation of environmental harms. One of the greatest difficulties, however, is the lack of both technical support and the availability of organized and reliable environmental data for the decision making process. These constraints resulted in the recommendations for the development of a complementary research to fill up such gap and to improve the performance of action of the justice prosecutors in the resolution of environmental conflicts.

This paper uses a comprehensive data set to develop a hedonic model of office rent that estimates values of contractual terms such as tenant improvement allowances, leasing commissions, and options. The model includes variables to control for building characteristics and market conditions, as well as basic lease terms. Although other studies have used a similar approach, the prior work in this area was limited by the lack of data regarding contractual terms. The results show that there is a consistent, upward-sloping, convex term structure of rent. Furthermore, there is an insignificant "size premium" but the "proportion discount" is significant. In general, other variables, such as location variables and qualitative variables behave as expected, with the exception of the expense type dummy variables. Tenant improvement allowances and leasing commissions paid by the landlord do not have a predictable impact on rent at low levels. But high levels of allowances and commissions result in significant rent premiums. These results indicate that lower levels of allowances and commissions may be expected by the market. At higher levels, however, these contractual terms are clearly priced into rent levels.
(cont.) Renewal options appear to have positive impacts in some years and negative impacts in other years. Renewal options may represent amenities that are granted to tenants as inducements in weaker leasing markets but are priced in stronger markets. Termination options and rights of first offer/refusal appear to have negative impacts on rent that are somewhat consistent in all years. This is counterintuitive because these options are thought to benefit the tenant. One explanation is that these options are in fact beneficial to the landlord. Further study is necessary to understand the value of these options. Overall, more information about options terms would be beneficial. Information such as the renewal rent, the termination fee, and the size of the offer/refusal space would help us to understand the economic arrangement between the parties and to predict the corresponding impact on rent.

Full textThe present study focuses on the commitment/agreement term of conduct settlement signed before the Labor Public Prosecution Office (Prosecuting Counsel). It is important to stress that the mass conflicts brought new drapery to the Brazilian legal system in order to establish and inscribe the precept of the collective protection/injunction. So, the effectiveness of the metaindividual rights got stronger through the mediation of the extrajudicial and judicial forms of solution of the collective conflicts, everything in favor of the social rights guaranty, social peace and full employment. The collectivization of the interests implied reduction of the individual labor conflicts, coverage of the interests of group, category or class, better compliance of the social values of work, reconciling, therefore, the fundamental and basic principles of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The basis of the labor metaindividual rights structures itself in the fundamental human rights and, in this context, there should be the minimum clauses to be stipulated in the conduct settlement as a form of tutelage against the damages to diffuse and collective interests in the sphere of the working relationship. The defense of the legal system/order, the democratic regime and of the unavailable social and individual rights was given to the Labor Parquet as an agent organ and consecrated by the 1988 Constitution, dissociating, effectively, from the eminently function of giving an option (intervening Organ) prevailing until then. The structure of the commitment/agreement term of conduct settlement, as well as its form of celebration, legal nature, object, limit of the clauses, collective wounded feelings, hypotheses of relaxation of the stipulated fine, territorial jurisdiction for signature, noncompliance of the settlement/adjustment, besides other polemic aspects allusive to the theme are object of the present essay. Not less important is the approach of the investigative proceeding and of the civil investigation, instruments commonly used in the performance of the investigation Power consecrated by the section 127 of the Federal Brazilian Constitution to the Institution of the Parquet in defense of the legal system/order, of the democratic regime and of the unavailable social and individual rights.

Full textThis study examines the factors that correlate with first-term attrition of enlisted Marines and officers in the Selected Marine CorpsReserve (SMCR). The data for this study were provided by Headquarters Marine CorpsManpower and Reserve Affairs for fiscal years 2001 through 2014. We create two separate multivariate models to identify the causes of attrition for both populations. The enlisted personnel model used finds that rank and education have the greatest effect on the attrition behavior of enlisted Marines, while the Armed Forces Qualification Test scores and waiver have the least effect. For officers, rank has the greatest effect on the attrition probability, while age and unit type variables have the least effects. Numerous other variables under different categories were found to have significant effects on Marine SMCR attrition behavior. Some variables have different effects on each population, such as marital status. This variable is associated with higher attrition rates for enlisted personnel, while it decreases the attrition probability of officers. Other variables in this category include Physical Fitness Test scores, unit type, and number of dependents.

This research has as its starting point the Ofício of the Baianas de Acarajé his title of Cultural Heritage of Brazil received in 2004. The central focus is to understand the baianas de acarajé as historical subjects that articulate different ways to value their office beyond institutional valuation. Therefore, we present two institutions that represent the baianas de acarajé : the Federação Nacional de Culto-Afro Brasileiro (FENACAB), to a lesser extent, and the Associação das Baianas de Acarajé Mingau, Receptivos e Similares in the State of Bahia ( ABAM ), the latter more active . Through the methodology of participant observation fieldwork was conducted primarily in the city of Salvador. The objective is to present and discuss the construction of narratives of baiana de acarajé based on the development of the arguments justifying the office as a cultural reference. Understand the office as a black african - heritage linked to Brazilian religiosity.

There is a need for critical thinking skills in our society. This research study examines graduate student’s growth in critical thinking after experiencing a specifically designed curriculum. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer Common Core Course to change student critical thinking skills and habits of the mind attributes, and further examined instructor perceptions of the curriculum, instructional methods, and instructor skills and behaviors that impact student critical thinking development within the Core Course. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed method research design in order to answer the four research questions and test their respective hypotheses. Eight student staff groups (n=120) were selected from the Command and General Staff Officer Common Core Course Class 15 population, and the quantitative data used to conduct the analyses was derived from a pretest and posttest using the Military and Defense Critical Thinking Inventory (MDCTI), a nationally recognized instrument designed specifically for individuals in the defense and military profession. The qualitative component of the study consisted of focus group interviews conducted with instructors from the eight selected staff groups (n=24) to examine their perceptions on the role of the curriculum, instructional methods, and instructor skills and behaviors in developing student critical thinking. The data collected from these interviews were analyzed and presented using a collective case study approach. Analysis of the student pretest and posttest score change results indicated statistically significant changes in analysis, induction, deduction, and overall critical thinking skills, and in the communicative confidence, professional confidence, expression, and directness habits of the mind attributes. Further analysis indicated that there was no statistically significant change differences in critical thinking skills or habits of the mind attributes between the teaching team groups. Analysis of the qualitative data revealed nine themes that were categorized within the theoretical framework of curriculum, instructional methods, and instructor skills and behaviors. Four additional themes emerged which did not address the role of curriculum, instructional methods, and instructor skills and behaviors in developing student critical thinking. These themes included: lack of contact time, the importance of the physical classroom configuration, the military/school culture, and student attributes.

Full textIn the ever so increasingly competitive business climate of the 21st century, human resources are vital for corporate success. Employees need proper incentives to perform in goal-oriented manners. Incentive systems, especially Chief Executive Officer [CEO] remunerations, have been a popular topic since the 1990s, and this tendency has increased both during the 2002-2003 corporate scandal era, as well as the financial crisis which sparked in 2007. The recent tendency appears to lean towards companies cutting their executive bonuses as well as criticism and suspiciousness towards large bonus payments. While remuneration policies within the banking industry have been thoroughly debated and researched, another financial industry that is left largely untouched are the insurance companies. The focus of this research is therefore CEO remuneration in European insurance companies.
This descriptive study, of annual reports of stock-listed insurance companies, uses a purposive cluster sample to explore quantitative trends in CEO remunerations. In addition, a content analysis of five randomly selected companies out of the sample provides a deeper, complementary understanding of the justifications of the trends. The research questions are: What trends on CEO remuneration can be found over the years 2005-2009 in annual reports of European insurance companies, concerning total remuneration, fixed salary and short-term bonus? What justifications do companies make for the remunerations over the years 2005-2009?
The quantitative part of the research inductively tests the assumption that CEO remuneration has decreased during the past few years 2008 and/ or 2009 due to the impact of the financial crisis. The content analysis part of the research deductively tests if agency theory concerns and issues concerning attraction and retention play a role in determining remuneration policies.
From this research, it is concluded that short-term variable pay is largely performance-based. Still, many other aspects serve as input factors when determining compensation levels. Based on the content analysis, it is revealed that interest alignment and attraction- and retention-issues are important determinants of remunerations. Subjective factors such as discretionary judgements also play a crucial role. The quantitative trends found in this study show that total remunerations have decreased markedly in 2008, and more vaguely in 2009. The financial crisis has had an impact on especially the short-term variable part of salaries, but also on base salary levels. Although not all companies that were investigated in the content analysis explicitly mention it in their annual reports, over the years 2005-2009, all of them become more concerned about remuneration policies and business risk factors. Over the investigated years, these companies also become more attentive to creating proactive and sophisticated value creating remuneration policies that are in line with international standards, in order to act legitimate towards stakeholders.

Full textIn recent years, companies have tried to design their office environments into one that calls for more communication both within and between different functions in the product development process. As the product development process transforms a product from idea to launch, it is considered a significant challenge to integrate the functions involved with each other. As a result, many companies have implemented activity-based offices. By applying this, companies expect communication to increase and, in turn, have a positive impact on the product development process. However, research is controversial as to how activity-based affects the process. The purpose of this study is to study how communication looks at activity-based offices and how collaboration is affected between functions during the product development process. The study was carried out by initially conducting a literature study to gain an increased understanding of the field. Subsequently, a qualitative semi-structured interview survey was conducted with four respondents from two different companies. Both companies have implemented activity-based offices and are working on product development processes. The study shows that in the implementation of activity-based offices, informal meetings have increased in frequency and collaboration between functions. The physical distance between team members has increased, which has led to less face-to-face interaction and more use of digital tools. When the team is not co-located, more structure is required, which has been a positive development. The product development process is worked more cross-functionally between the functions when implementing an activity-based workplace, ABW
