Full textIn this study we propose a semiotic theory which is able to take into account the role of media in both the cultural production and the semantic system. The first part of the work realises a comparison between media theories and semiotics ones in order to show the necessity of an integration between the material and technical components and the cultural and symbolic ones. Starting from the assumptions of Marshall McLuhan (1964), we investigate the processes of specialization which differentiate generic technology from semiotics technology. Taking the cue from some assumptions formulated by Umberto Eco (1997, 1975) and Bruno Latour (2012), we suggest a review of Émile Benveniste’s theory of enunciation (1970) through which considering media as technologies of semiosis: each of them is characterised by a specific trajectory of production, signification and transmission. A set of filmic analysis will be used in order to identify the internal components that differentiate these trajectories. In the second part we focus on a specific technology of semiosis, i.e. the audiovisual one: by comparing semiotic, aesthetic and neurofilmology theoretical backgrounds we propose a structural approach for the study of film experience. Finally, we direct our attention on a more specific field, which we specify as a field of intermedial rhetoric. The latter will be defined presenting a series of cases in which the gaps between genres (fiction and documentary) and technical formats (high and low definition, photographic images and cartoon) are used to maximise the persuasion or the efficiency of audiovisual discourses. Through the use of a set of filmic analysis, the thesis will show to what extent the field of an intermedial rhetoric, betraying cultural, technical and aesthetical habits, allow us to verify how they tacitly work in the semantic system.

Full textThe studies presented in this dissertation include practical and theoretical results developed in the context of procedural knowledge space theory (PKST). PKST was developed from the link between the problem spaces theory and the knowledge spaces theory (KST). The former is a theory of human problem solving, according to the problem-solving behavior occurs in a problem space. The latter is a mathematical theory whose initial goal was the development of an efficient machine for the assessment of knowledge. Today, KST is the theoretical framework for numerous adaptive and computer-based assessment and learning systems. The fundamental notion in KST is the knowledge structure. The knowledge structure is a model for the organization of knowledge in a given domain. In PKST, the knowledge structure is derived from the problem space. A peculiarity of this approach is that the problems in the knowledge structure are solved by (partially) observable sequences of moves in the problem space. Unfortunately, the existing methods of empirical validation of knowledge structures and adaptive assessment of knowledge in KST cannot use the information contained in these sequences of moves but are limited to dichotomous responses (i.e., correct/wrong). The general aim of the first two studies is to present models that use the information contained in the observed sequences of moves. With this aim, a probabilistic framework called the Markov solution process model (MSPM), which considers the problem space and knowledge structures, was developed. The MSPM was used as a model for the empirical validation of knowledge structure and as the foundation for an adaptive, computer-based knowledge assessment procedure. The last two studies aimed to investigate how to specify a problem space. In fact, different problem spaces can represent the same task. However, those representations should be consistent to one another. The first study covers the theoretical aspects of which characteristics must be maintained among alternative representations to be consistent. The second presents an application about the possible interpretation of this representation at a psychological level.

Full textThough its toils, pedagogy is still unable to say something new about education, society and culture. It continues only to produce all sort of teleologies, that is a large quantity of finalities for education. On the contrary, possibility to say something new about education seems linked to a new interpretation of three important concepts: science, epistemology and criticism. They could really let pedagogy to start a new connection with its object (education). In the second part of the work, I try to think of Riccardo Massa’s speech again. I consider his pedagogy as a new theory, able to think education as a particular “field” of experience. Education, in the opinion of Riccardo Massa, is a “device”, that is a mechanism made by specific elements and specific force levels. In the third part of the research, first, I try to use “device” theory to show a new possible way to structure and to run a rehabilitation ward. Finally, I try to use the same theory to show a new possible way to plan educational work with children families.
SACCHI, MATTEO. "Aspects of dualities and symmetry enhancements in three and four dimensions." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/364170.
Full textThe low energy dynamics of quantum field theories can be characterized by several interesting non-perturbative phenomena. Among these, in this thesis we study infra-red dualities and global symmetry enhancements in three and four dimensions. We focus on supersymmetric theories, for which various exact computational tools are at our disposal. Of particular relevance is supersymmetric localization, which allows us to compute partition functions on various compact manifolds. These turn out to be invariant under the renormalization group flow and are thus powerful to probe dualities and symmetry enhancements. Moreover, one can also effectively study flows across dimensions through these supersymmetric partition functions. Equipped with these tools, in this thesis we investigate different perspectives on the program of finding and organizing dualities and symmetry enhancements in 3d and 4d. The approaches that we will employ combine several different concepts that appear in the study of supersymmetric theories. This first one is that we can flow across dimensions via spacetime compactifications. In this way we can find new dualities and symmetry enhancements, by either dimensionally reducing to lower dimensions or uplifting to higher dimensions some that are already known. Another possibility is to compactify a higher dimensional theory, like a 6d theory on a Riemann surface so to get a 4d theory, and use this geometric construction to predict and systematize dualities and symmetry enhancements. The last important ingredient that will play a role in our analysis consists of correspondences, in particular gauge/CFT correspondences relating partition functions of certein supersymmetric theories to correlation functions of some CFTs. These kind of correspondences can also be exploited to find new results on the gauge theory side from known results on the CFT side. In this thesis we discuss various examples of applications of these ideas. We first present a relation between 3d N = 2 dualities and identities for 2d CFT free field correlators, and we explain how this can be used to uplift known results about 2d free fields to new aspects of 3d theories. The second topic is the compactification of a particular 6d N = (1, 0) SCFT, known as the rank-N E-string theory, on Riemann surfaces with fluxes so to get 4d N = 1 theories. This construction allows us to predict dualities and symmetry enhancements from known properties of the 6d SCFT and geometric considerations. Finally, we discuss a new type of duality for 4d N = 1 theories that represents a higher dimensional ancestor of the well-known 3d mirror symmetry.
GAROZZO, IVAN. "3d SCFTs from S-duality walls." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/301982.
Full textThe thesis focuses on the study of various three-dimensional gauge theories whose nature is related to the existence of S-duality walls in four dimensional theories, mainly in the cases of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory and for the N=2 SU(N) theory with 2N fundamental flavours. In the former set-up, an S-fold is defined as an AdS4 Type IIB String Theory solution in which fields in overlapping patches are glued together using elements of the SL(2, Z) S-duality group of N=4 SYM. The insertion of this object in the brane systems realising three dimensional theories with eight supercharges gives rise to the S-fold theory. The peculiarity of this class of theory is the presence of T(U(N)) as a basic building block, in addition to the usual vector multiplets and hypermultiplets. The moduli spaces of S-fold theories are studied in detail, including cases with non-trivial Chern-Simons levels. The whole analysis shed new light on the brane dynamics in the presence of an S-fold. The entire construction is then generalised to the inclusion, on the brane systems, of orientifold three planes. As a consequence the basic block T(U(N)) is replaced by the more general T(G) theory, G being self-dual under S-duality. In particular, the cases with G=SO(2N), USp'(2N) and G_2 are analysed in great detail, where in this last there is no known brane construction, to the best of our knowledge. We propose how to insert an S-fold in the brane systems with orientifold planes, study the moduli spaces of the realised gauge theories and test the results against mirror symmetry. We further study various S-fold theories by computing their supersymmetric index, that is used as a tool to study global and supersymmetry IR enhancements, one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum field theory. Finally, we discuss a class of 3d N=2 theories that are associated with S-duality domain walls in 4d SU(N) with 2N flavours. Theories associated with various configurations of duality walls are analysed performing appropriate gluing of the basic block associated with the single wall theory. A number of dualities among these theories are discovered and studied using the supersymmetric index.

Full textIn this thesis we construct the one-dimensional topological sector of $\mathcal N = 6$ ABJ(M) theory and study its relation with the mass-deformed partition function on $\mathbb S^3$. Supersymmetric localization provides an exact representation of this partition function as a matrix integral and it has been proposed that correlation functions of certain topological operators are computed through derivatives with respect to the masses. We present non-trivial evidence for this relation by computing the three- and four- point function up to one loop and the two-point function at two loops, successfully matching the matrix model expansion at weak coupling and finite ranks. As a by-product, we obtain the two-loop explicit expression for the central charge $c_T$ of ABJ(M) theory. When then shift our attention to the study of the infrared phases of two-node quiver Chern-Simons theories with minimal supersymmetry in three dimensions. We discuss both the cases of Chern-Simons levels with the same and with opposite signs, where the latter case turn out to be more non-trivial. The determination of their phase diagrams allows us to conjecture certain infrared dualities involving either two quiver theories, or a quiver and adjoint QCD$_3$.

Full textThe detailed description of disordered and glassy systems represents an open problem in statistical physics and condensed matter. As yet, there is no single, well-established theory allowing to understand such systems. The research presented in this thesis is related in particular to the study of glassy materials in the low-temperature regime. More precisely, considering systems formed by athermal particles subject to repulsive short-range interactions, upon progressively increasing the density, a so-called jamming transition can be detected. It entails a freezing of the degrees of freedom and hence a huge increase of the material rigidity. We shall study this problem in view of a formal analogy between sphere models and the perceptron, a theoretical model undergoing a jamming transition and frustration phenomena typical of disordered systems. Being a mean-field model, it allows to obtain exact analytical results, which are generalizable to more complex high-dimensional settings. The main aim is to reconstruct the vibrational spectrum and all the relevant properties of a specific phase of the perceptron, corresponding to the hard-sphere regime. In this framework, we will derive the effective potential as a function of the gaps between and forces among the particles, and we will show that it is dominated by a non-trivial logarithmic interaction near the jamming point. This interaction in turn will clarify the relations existing between the relevant variables of the system, in the critical jamming region and beyond.Understanding the jamming transition and the perceptron properties will allow us to make progress in several related fields. First, this study could lay part of the groundwork towards a complete theory of amorphous systems, in both infinite and finite dimensions. Furthermore, the perceptron model seems to a have a close connection with the so-called Von Neumann problems. Indeed, biological and ecological systems often develop pseudo-critical properties and give rise to general mechanisms of resource-consumption optimisation. Is the identification of a broken symmetry regime possible? What would it yield in terms of the spectrum of the energy fluctuations? These are just a few questions we shall attempt to answer in this context. However, the mean-field approximation can sometimes provide wrong or misleading information, especially in studying certain phase transitions and determining the exact lower and upper critical dimensions. To have a broad perspective and correctly deal with finite-dimensional systems, in the second part of the thesis we will discuss obtaining a systematic perturbative expansion which can be applied to any model, as long as defined on a lattice or a bipartite graph. Our motivation is in particular due to the possibility of studying relevant second-order phase transitions which exist on the Bethe lattice — a lattice with a locally tree-like structure and fixed connectivity for each node — but which are qualitatively different or absent in the corresponding fully-connected version
