Abstract:
Growing awareness of environmental sustainability in the agri-food sector has enhanced the gradual shift toward less-impactful food and organic production systems. In 2021, nearly three million hectolitres of organic wine were produced which accounted for 6% of the whole wine production in Italy (50.2 million hectolitres); thus, registering an increase of almost 60% in the last three years. The economic and cultural importance attributed to Italian wine production worldwide represents a key factor to assess and reduce the environmental burdens associated with the activities of this industry. Furthermore, literature studies have highlighted consumer sensitivity for sustainable winemaking processed, and there is even a trend towards eco-friendly wines. In particular, the bottling stage has been identified as an impactful stage for the environmental performance of the wine life cycle. This study examined the environmental impact assessment of organic wine production in the Lazio region, by performing a “cradle-to-gate” approach according to the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. High-quality inventory data for one year of operation was obtained directly from the farming company, “Tenute Filippi” (Cori, Lazio, Italy), and the wine process considered the input from grape cultivation to the winery phases. In these regards, the study also provided an impact assessment for the primary packaging of a 0.75 L wine bottle, with contributions from the different life cycle stages. The results showed a total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) of 1.1 kg CO2 eq, that are responsible for climate change. Referring to the individual production input, the primary packaging phase accounted for 55% of the total GHGs, with 0.86 kg CO2 eq per bottle, followed by agricultural fuel use for grape production and harvesting activities, with 0.30 kg CO2 eq. Building on these results, the study provides recommendations on the selection of the most significant and relevant indicators for the environmental life cycle impact assessment, thus, identifying possible hotspots in the wine sector.

Abstract:
Queensland is richly endowed with coal resources that have long supported the state’s thriving coal export industry. The more recent development and growth of the CSG industry, which shares an interest in coal resources, has brought into focus the need to find mechanisms that provide for co-existence between mining and gas proponents. The present legislative framework in Queensland provides an overlapping tenure between coal mining and CSG proponents. This overlap is extensive, and presents concerns about the certainty of access to resources and security of tenure, which are keys to providing investment confidence. The drainage of gas from coal seams for reasons of mine safety is long established, and when considered with incentives provided by measures to tax carbon emissions and the opportunity to use the energy value of CSG, there are clearly good reasons to find mutually beneficial ways to extract both coal and gas. It is submitted that the key co-existence mechanism to allow for the optimal use of coal and CSG is linked to the nature of the resources themselves. That is, the very broad geographic footprint of CSG provides geographic and temporal flexibility to work in and around coal-mining projects. These arrangements are facilitated by use of commercially based co-development agreements that consider co-ordinated production of both resources within a co-operative framework that provides for safety, communication, planning and, above all, certainty of process and access to resources. These agreements provide mutually beneficial, win-win outcomes and work towards ensuring best use of the state’s coal and gas resources.

Abstract:
The spatial aspect of the challenge of the sustainable land tenure formation has been scrutinized in the article. There is a set of unresolved issues at the point where interests of land owners, land users and the government clash, that witnesses the absence of effective mechanisms of the formed land tenure system improvement. At the transition to the market relations, with the private land property environment, new effective approaches to land redistribution and rational land use support are necessary. The research objective is the development of a complex approach to the land tenure spatial improvement for the sustainable development. Substantiation is carried out for the transition economy with Ukraine as an example. Land redistribution aiming at urban settlement area optimization and agricultural land tenure in the context of the social environment and economic benefit has been substantiated. The effectiveness of the spatial land improvement in the context of the national and local budget land fee revenues has been substantiated.

Abstract:
A landholder or occupier is generally entitled to control access to their property. An unauthorised entry onto a person’s property will provide the landholder with the entitlement to commence an action in trespass subject to statutory protection being available to the trespasser. Land access is a significant factor in the public debate surrounding the recovery of unconventional gas that requires access for tenure holders for various purposes. This paper first discusses the common law background to the entitlement of landholders to control access to land. The paper will then analyse the statutory regulatory structure applying in Queensland, NSW, WA and SA that entitles access to land for tenure holders in relation to unconventional gas. This paper will discuss the nature of property and perceptions of property that impact on the context in which negotiations occur between landholders and tenure holders. The paper will discuss some of the reasons the issue of access goes beyond mere legal rights from the perspective of the landholder, and how this may impact the approach taken by tenure holders and landholders in the negotiations for access to land. For the benefit of both the tenure holder and the landholder, the paper will suggest factors that may assist in promoting good negotiated outcomes.

Abstract:
The paper is concerned with the issues of the voluntary land consolidation using the exchange method at land relations reforming. The objective of the article is the substantiation of the exchange method aiming at the large and small land owners (land users) land tenure optimization and the formation of approaches with the help of which the mutual alignment of their interests can be achieved. Land plot ownership and tenure rights exchange by the relative value has been substantiated. It is suggested to define the relative value based on the principle of juxtaposition of land plots by their qualitative, spatial and technological characteristics. The land plots exchange modelling has been improved according to the relative value application and due to the existing land plots boundaries retaining at the exchange. The effectiveness of the suggested land plots exchange method has been demonstrated at the land tenure optimization of an agricultural enterprise and some households in Kyiv Region. Alternative land consolidation projects based on the land plots exchange have been developed, the results of which demonstrate the advantages of the voluntary land consolidation based on the suggested methodology.

Abstract:
Land activities contribute ~18% of total greenhouse gas emissions produced in Australia. To help reduce these emissions, the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) was implemented in 2011 to encourage land projects, which reduce the production of greenhouse gases and/or sequester carbon in the land. Prospective projects include savanna fire management and rangelands management, which have high relevance in northern Australia where Indigenous landholding is strong. This paper explores the land-tenure requirements necessary for these kinds of carbon projects to be approved by the Clean Energy Regulator. It provides an introduction to the CFI before discussing the land tenure requirements in the states of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia with respect to both emissions reduction and carbon sequestration projects. Potential issues with the current framework are highlighted, especially in relation to native title.

"Through case studies of three emerging economies - Ecuador, Nigeria and Russia - this thesis analyses the factors present to a greater or lesser degree in emerging economies, such as severe foreign indebtedness and the absence of the rule of law, that undermine the effectiveness of the legal system in protecting indigenous peoples from oil exploitation. Having identified these factors, I propose that a dual approach to the protection of indigenous peoples' traditional lands and their environment be adopted, whereby international laws that set out the rights of indigenous peoples and place duties on states in this regard, are reinforced and translated into practice through the self-regulation of the international oil industry through a voluntary code of conduct for oil companies seeking to operate on indigenous peoples' traditional lands."

Abstract:

Abstract:
In South Africa, oil and gas companies are subject to the ordinary tax rules within the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 ("the Act"), but enjoy certain tax concessions within the Tenth Schedule to the Act. The main reason for introducing the Tenth Schedule was to create certainty and transparency for oil and gas exploration and production with the aim to secure foreign investment (National Treasury, 2006:15). Considering the growth potential of South Africa's oil and gas industry and the fact that the Tenth Schedule was introduced to create certainty and transparency in the hopes of securing foreign investment, this dissertation evaluates whether the Tenth Schedule achieves its aim of providing certainty and transparency in order to attract and retain foreign investment in the oil and gas industry. Furthermore, this dissertation identifies issues and uncertainties found within the Tenth Schedule which could hinder such foreign investment. Finally, as countries are in competition with one another to attract foreign investment, this dissertation evaluates how the incentives provided by the Tenth Schedule compare to the incentives provided by Ghana's oil and gas tax regime.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Audit, big four, big seven, audit quality, audit independence, audit firm rotation, auditor rotation, expectation gap, evidential matter, audit procedures och audit tenure.

Abstract:
The development of renewable energy away from urban areas requires the transmission of a large amount of energy over long distances. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission has many advantages over AC power transmission. In this context, it is necessary to develop power converters based on high voltage power electronic components, 10 to 30 kV. If silicon components cannot achieve these objectives, silicon carbide (SiC) is positioned as a promising alternative semiconductor material. To support high voltages, a drift region, relatively wide and lightly doped is the heart of the power component. In practice obtaining an effective blocking voltage depends on several factors and especially the design of a suitable junction termination. This thesis presents a method to improve the voltage withstand of SiC components based on the use of junction terminations: Deep Trench Termination. This method uses a trench deep etching around the periphery of the component, filled with a dielectric material to support the spreading of the equipotential lines. The design of the diode with this termination was done by TCAD simulation, with two voltage levels 3 and 20 kV. The work took into account the characteristics of the material, the interface charge of the trench and the technological limits for the fabrication. This work resulted in the fabrication of demonstrators and their characterization to validate the design. During the production of these structures, plasma etching of SiC has been optimized in an ICP reactor so as to obtain a high etching rate and maintaining an electronic quality of the state of etched surfaces. This quality is confirmed by the results of characterization obtained with blocking voltage close to the ideal one

PUCCI, EGIDIO. "Innovative design process for industrial gas turbine combustors." Doctoral thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1126566.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is tracking the design process footprints, from the wide initial scenario of a new combustor design for industrial gas turbines, down to detailed design aspects, passing through sealing system design with turbine nozzle, up to a specific liner cooling architecture and its optimization. Main effort of this job has been focused on the creation of a numerical tool, able, since the early phase of development, to analyze the liner cooling with a one-dimensional conjugate aero-thermal-strain approach: liner cold side heat transfer coefficients in a turbulated forced convection region are iteratively computed updating metal and air temperatures and the deformed geometry of coolant passages from results of a heat balance. Coolant passages, in between the deformed surfaces of liner and baffle, influence the air velocity, changing in turn heat transfer coefficients and coolant pressure losses. The computation of liner and baffle strain has been validated comparing the code results with the ones obtained by a detailed finite element model. Correlations embedded in the code have been calibrated thanks to a comparison with temperatures and pressures experimental measurements, which have been acquired in a full annular rig test campaign. The code has been provided with two additional optimization routines, developed to automatically improve the baffle design for an enhancement of the liners durability, without penalizing engine performance. Maintaining the same coolant pressure losses and minimizing the axial gradients of metal temperature by means of a variable gap baffle geometry, a reduction of thermal induced stresses can be achieved. The reader will follow problems and solutions, sizing criteria and uncertainties estimation of the combustor architecture adopted in the BHGE NovaLT industrial gas turbine class, up to reach the testing phase of the manufactured components and finally the baffle design solution optimization. Reliability of the liner cooling system depends also by the reliability of the leakage prediction across the interface between liners and turbine first stage nozzles. In parallel to the baffle design optimization, studies have been performed on this sealing systems, aimed to increase the reliability of the combustor flow split prediction and to identify areas of improvement of the sealing. The criteria for selection and design of the most suitable sealing system and related durability analyses will be presented, completing the picture of the combustor flow split and synergistically improving the reliability of the liners cooling design presented.

Wall, Deborah R. "Development, governance and Indigenous people : foregrounding the LNG precinct case in the Kimberley." Thesis, 2015. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/uws:33425.

Abstract:
After four and a half years evaluating the viability of the establishment of the Browse LNG Precinct onshore at James Price Point in the Kimberley, Woodside and its Joint Venture Partners decided to abandon the project in April 2013. How Indigenous people in the Kimberley made their voices manifest in resource development discussions through their own internal governance system and through their interactions with the institutions of Government and transnational companies is the subject of my thesis. The Browse LNG Precinct proposal was contentious and caused deep divisions within family members, friends and employers in Broome. It became the site of a struggle for recognition of the many voices representing the competing interests of economic development, Aboriginal cultural heritage protection, and environmental conservation. My particular focus is the notion of development by Indigenous people and by the Western Australian government particularly when Traditional Law intersects with Australian mainstream law over land held in common. I examine how notions of development and related values were manifested in practice at mining sites that overlapped with Indigenous sacred sites at Noonkanbah, Argyle and James Price Point. I have found that essentially, the Indigenous people’s voices are represented through the recognition space of state institutional apparatus. The design and operation of legislative acts enabled a system of control over how Aboriginal interests are to be governed within the framework of Australia’s governance of mineral and natural resources. Co-existence between Aboriginal and Western cosmology constitutes dynamic processes and the interplay for mutual recognition. In practice, the dominant system of control filters the Indigenous voice by its translation within the institutional practices of the Australian state and legal system.

AbstractAs research and policies around securing tenure for people across the world grows, we have a deeper understanding of what works and what does not. Here, we draw attention to contemporary evidence gaps that continue to hinder efforts to strengthen land tenure security (LTS) for sustainable development. We also highlight areas ripe for policy testing and innovation and discuss promising pathways for advancing research and practice for LTS.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter highlights that matriarchy and matrilineal social orientations are not inherent guarantees of women's access to land but can reinforce male dominance over land ownership, control, and access to land. It notes that social structures and norms are subject to change and, in this instance, colonialization and modernization have acted as the two key influencers in reshaping Asante matriarchy. The researchers argue that the continuous interplay of cultural negotiations within the traditional matriarchal regime have caused a drastic transformation in Asante land tenure system which have fuelled unequal access to land. In effect, a postcolonial Asante woman is no longer guaranteed land tenure security from her family or community and more likely to face the harsh realities of landlessness. The chapter does not assume equal access to land hitherto but notes that the inequality gap has been further widened by the weakening of 'female power' in the matriarchal social system.

Abstract:
On March 13th, 1998, Dr. Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain co-inventor of the turbojet passed away at the age of 86. As a young doctoral student, von Ohain conceived of and built a demonstrator turbojet engine. He was hired by the Heinkel Aircraft Company in 1936 and under intense time pressure imposed by Ernst Heinkel, designed the world’s first flight turbojet engine. This paper traces the technical antecedents leading to historic jet-powered flight made on August 27, 1939 by a Heinkel He 178 aircraft powered by von Ohain’s HeS 3B turbojet. During his tenure at Heinkel and thereafter at the Heinkel-Hirth Company, he was responsible for a series of turbojet engines culminating in the advanced second generation HeS 011 with a thrust of 2,860 lbs. This paper is a tribute to an outstanding scientist who made possible the turbojet revolution and who will forever be remembered as the inventor of the world’s first flight turbojet.

Abstract:
This paper describes a new software approach to the preliminary design of aircraft engine turbines. A hybrid artificial intelligence and numerical-optimization-based design shell called Engineous was used to capture some basic turbine preliminary design knowledge, manipulate turbine design parameters, execute a turbine performance prediction program and its preprocessors, and analyze results. Engineous automatically supplements incomplete human design knowledge with symbolic and numerical search techniques when needed. This approach produced designs with higher predicted performance gains than the existing manual design process in a tenth of the turnaround time and has yielded new insights into turbine design. A comparison of turbine designs obtained by designers and by Engineous is presented here along with an overview of Engineous system architecture.

Silverman, Allison. Summary: Using International Law to Advance Women’s Tenure Rights in REDD+. Rights and Resources Initiative, June 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/ymup2358.

Full text
Abstract:
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a voluntary international initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote conservation and sustainable management of forests. It has significant implications for tenure rights, including for women. Although women use forests to support their own as well as their families’ livelihoods, they are frequently overlooked as key stakeholders. Women often face discrimination in resource management processes, largely through unequal, insecure, or unclear tenure rights. Hence, there is a significant risk that the implementation of REDD+ could exacerbate existing inequalities for women. Securing women’s tenure rights is fundamental, as tenure rights provide recognized rights-holders with the ability to be involved in and to benefit from the design and implementation of REDD+ activities.

Abstract:
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is an international initiative to mitigate climate change in the forest sector. It is intended to incentivize developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as promote sustainable management of forests, and conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. REDD+ has significant implications for land and resource rights, and raises particular concerns for women. These concerns arise from discrimination that women already face in resource management processes, largely due to unclear, unsecure and unequal tenure rights. Women represent a large percentage of the world’s poor, and they are often directly dependent on natural resources. As a result, there are significant risks that REDD+ could exacerbate existing inequalities for women if it fails to respect women’s tenure rights. This paper makes a case for advancing women’s tenure rights and how international law can be used to promote those rights in the context of REDD+.

Collyer, Michael, and Laura Hammond. Migrants on the margins final report. Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), January 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55203/jtld8758.

Full text
Abstract:
Migrants on the margins was a five-year collaborative field research project that investigated the movement of migrants into and around four of the world’s most pressured cities: Colombo in Sri Lanka, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Harare in Zimbabwe and Hargeisa in Somaliland. Supported by the Society, the research team adopted a comparative approach to look at the opportunities available to migrants in order to better understand their experiences and vulnerabilities. Research in the four cities engaged with both newly arrived and well-established residents of 13 neighbourhoods, and involved focus groups, surveys, walk along interviews, oral histories, Q methodology, and GIS and participatory community mapping workshops. The key findings from the project have shed light on the incredible challenges of living in the neighbourhoods studied as well as the significant levels of population mobility, or churn, within these communities. The research also highlights the impact of clear gender differences in men’s and women’s roles in communities, as well as the effect of evictions and tenure security on residents, and how people can easily become ‘trapped’ within these neighbourhoods. Results from the research are continuing to influence policy within the four cities, and the research team have worked to support local policy makers and municipalities to improve the situations that migrants find themselves in.

Full text
Abstract:
The research was a retrospective study of twenty-five Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspection reports (from March 2017 through to December 2018) of a national medicine regulatory agency, drug Inspectorate, in West Africa, designed to assess the inspectors’ expertise in the act of inspection report writing. The investigation examined a paper-based tool of thirteen pre-registration Inspection reports and twelve GMP reassessment reports written prior and following an intervention program by external GMP trainers to enhance inspectors’ skill in pharmaceutical cGMP inspection. The study made use of quantitative analysis to investigate each team’s expertise in the act of writing GMP inspection report. Likewise, each report’s compliance with the requirements of three regulatory standards on GMP inspection report writing was ascertained. Impact of intervention program on lead inspectors’ competence was assessed. Lastly, gap in each team writing effectiveness, and lead inspectors’ abilities to deliver an effective report were determined. The results showed one of the inspection team (4.0%) wrote an excellent report. Two (8.0%) of the twenty-five inspection teams penned good inspection reports. Eleven (44.0%) teams drafted needs improvement reports and the remaining eleven teams (44.0%) prepared unacceptable reports. The excellent report and the two good reports had report format that meet expectation. One (50.0%) of the good reports showed the authors possess excellent knowledge of cGMP technical areas. The remain good report (50.0%) revealed the writers’ knowledge.as good. The excellent report showed the authors displayed partial mastery in the use of objective evidence while the two good reports disclosed theirs as having partial and evolving abilities. One of the teams (50.0%) that wrote good reports displayed good use of third person narrative past tense in report writing whereas the other team used the same tense and voice excellently. Generally, a sort of marginal level of performance was prominent among the inspection teams. A gap, if not tackled, will slow down regulatory process through increase report review, litigations that query report factual accuracy (AIHO, 2017) and delay in issuance of marketing authorization. In conclusion, trainings on quality attributes, such as technical content (Quality Management System (QMS) and Site), the use of objective evidence, assignment of risk levels to GMP violations and citing of applicable laws, regulation and guidelines that substantiate GMP observations, were recommended, to enhance knowledge sharing and regulators’ performance in the act of writing inspection report.

Abstract:
Despite growing interest and recognition of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) as a nature- based solution, there is limited empirical evidence in countries like India on its role in reconfiguring goals on environmental functions (such as biodiversity, waste management, water recycling, micro-climate regulation, etc.) and social wellbeing (such as food and nutrition security, gender relations, work burdens, land tenure and community ties). A need to address this gap led to the ideation of the project ‘Urban and peri-urban agriculture as green infrastructures’ ( UPAGrI ). When UPAGrI started in 2019, the research on UPA in India was thin but growing. However, the practical experience of urban farming across Indian cities is thriving and diverse, built on decades of bottom-up experimentation. Within the landscape of our ever-changing cities, we found vibrant communities-of-practice sharing seeds and knowledge, engaged online influencers discussing composting and water reuse, and stories of farming becoming sites of multi-generational bonding and nutritional security. This compendium is a collection of 29 such innovative UPA practices from across the different cities in the country. These diverse case studies are loosely categorized into four themes: environment and sustainability; food, nutrition and livelihood; gender and subjective well-being; and urban policy and planning. Written mostly by practitioners themselves, the case studies collectively recognise and celebrate UPA innovations and practices, serving as a repository of lessons for peer-to-peer learning, and demonstrating how UPA can be one of the many solutions towards sustainable, liveable Indian cities.

Collective Tenure Rights in Colombia’s Peace Agreement and Climate Policy Commitments. Rights and Resources Initiative, September 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/yzuu8847.

Full text
Abstract:
Between June and August 2016, the Colombian government made two announcements that will profoundly change the country. After four years of peace negotiations with the FARC guerillas, President Santos announced the Acuerdo final para la terminación del conflicto y la construcción de una paz estable y duradera [Final Peace Accord for the Conclusion of the Conflict and the Construction of Stable and Lasting Peace], moving the country toward the end of one of the longest internal conflicts in the history of the Americas. In the months prior to this announcement, the Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible [Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development] also officially launched the Visión Amazonía 2020 Program, a low-carbon sustainable development model for the Amazon region. This program is part of the country’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by the year 2030. Both announcements, linked to profound historic changes in the country, will generate new proposals related to sustainable development, agriculture, and access to land. They will also raise the question of what institutional changes are needed to effectively respond to these new challenges and opportunities. Given that the implementation of both of these initiatives will coalesce in the territories of the various rural and ethnic populations in the country, it will be necessary to directly address the crucial issue of guaranteeing indigenous and Afro-descendant communities’ collective rights. This issue will be central to effective implementation of the post-peace accord and climate policies, as well as in achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Who Owns the World's Land? A global baseline of formally recognized indigenous and community land rights. Rights and Resources Initiative, September 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/nxfo7501.

Full text
Abstract:
The first analysis to quantify the amount of land formally recognized by national governments as owned or controlled by Indigenous Peoples and local communities around the world. Ownership of the world’s rural lands and natural resources is a major source of contestation around the globe, affecting prospects for rural economic development, human rights and dignity, cultural survival, environmental conservation, and efforts to combat climate change. Communities are estimated to hold as much as 65 percent of the world’s land area through customary, community-based tenure systems. However, national governments only recognize formal, legal rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities to a fraction of these lands. Some countries are in the process of recognizing communities’ rights, and estimates from those countries provide some indication of the size of these gaps in recognition. As demands for land tenure reform increase and national processes to recognize land rights advance, this report provides a baseline that documents the current status of formal, statutory recognition of community-based tenure.

Securing Community Land Rights: Priorities & Opportunities to Advance Climate & Sustainable Development Goals. Rights and Resources Initiative, October 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/qfuj1241.

Abstract:
Today, insecure tenure rights threaten the livelihoods and wellbeing of a third of the world’s population, and with it, the very future of our planet. As the historical stewards of the world’s lands and forests, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and rural women play a critical role in the management and sustainable use of globally significant natural resource systems. In effect, protecting their rights protects everyone’s right to live in a more just, prosperous, and verdant world. Governments, however, have so far been slow to recognize and secure the collective land and resource rights of rural communities. As a result, even though Indigenous Peoples and local communities customarily claim and manage over 50 percent of the world’s lands, they legally own just 10 percent. In order to eliminate poverty; prevent the spread of social and political conflicts; and ensure progress toward global climate, conservation, and development goals, urgent actions are needed to redress this fundamental injustice. Fortunately, the world has never been better positioned to close this gap.
