Abstract:
Cataracts are one of the most causes of blindness in the world. Oxidative stress can form pathological conditions such as cataracts. This oxidative stress ability can be measured by the malondialdehyde (MDA) biomarker. Binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) are native plants from Indonesia that are used to treat various diseases including cataract treatment. Binahong leaf (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) has a high amount of flavonoids and is rich in antioxidants that can be used to treat cataracts. Objective. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of binahong leaf extract on the levels of MDA in a goat lens with cataract-induced material. Method. As many as possible, 40 goat eye lenses were divided into several groups, namely, group I normal lenses as controls (glucose 5.5 mM), group II lenses were cataract induced with glucose concentration of 55 mM, group III lenses with glucose 55 mM + binahong leaf extract (100 μg/ml), group IV lens with glucose 55 mM + binahong leaf extract (200 μg/ml), and group V lens with glucose 55 mM + quercetin (positive control). Biochemical parameters measured in the lens homogenate are malondialdehyde lens morphology in all groups’ observations and comparisons made. Results. The results of the study found that the lens group with the addition of binahong extract showed more results transparency compared to lens groups induced by glucose concentrations of 55 mM). This shows that the diabetic cataract group experienced high oxidative stress due to the accumulation of sorbitol compounds derived from glucose which caused turbidity in the goat eye lens and increased levels of lens MDA. Binahong levels at concentrations of 100 or 200 can inhibit MDA production. Conclusion. Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) extract has the ability to inhibit the production of MDA levels. In glucose-induced goat lenses, binahong extract and quercetin show antioxidant and anticataract properties.

Abstract:
The objectives of the present study were to investigate the influence of liming and mineral or organic fertization on the nutrients levels in soil and leaves, the increase of trunk perimeter and yields of 'Montenegrina' tangerines (Citrus deliciosa Tenore) grafted onto Poncirus trifoliata Raf. The orchard was planted in july, 1988 on a dark red podzolic (Rhodic Paleudult). The following treatments were applied: 1- control (without liming and fertilizers); 2- soil acidity corrected to pH 6,5 before planting; 3- annually hen's house litter manure and liming; 4- annually cattle manure and liming; 5- annually N and K fertilizers and liming; 6- annually N and K fertilizers and liming and P fertilizer before planting; 7- annually N, P and K fertilizers and liming; 8- annually N, K and double rate of P, and liming; 9- annually N, P and K fertilizers without liming. The results showed that levels of leaf nutrients alone are not an adequate parameter to be used fertization recommendation. Fertization with N, P and K increased leaf N contents and did not result in a increase in leaf P and K contents. N applications stimulated plant growth and increased total fruit production, but the fruits were of smaller size. The plants from the treatment that received hen's house litter manure resulted in plant growth and increased total fruit production equivalent of mineral fertilizers. On the other hand, plants fertilized with cattle manure, although having overal lower total fruit production, the tangerines were of better sizes compared to the treatments that received either mineral fertization or hen's house litter manure. Corrective applications of P before planting were sufficient to maintain adequate fruit production until eight years after planting. The nitrogen fertilizers caused soil acidification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nenhum tratamento inibiu a floração.
After the discovery of gibberellic acid (GA3) in fruit’s seeds, researches began applying GA3 exogenously at different rates and timings with various results. Among them, inhibition of the flower bud differentiation. Alternate bearing is one of the most important problems of citrus cultivars, especially tangerines with seeds. The objetive of this work was to supress flower bud formation in light crop years and thereby reduce biennal bearing. In 2004, at the Estação Experimental Agronômica of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, located in Eldorado do Sul – RS, on a twenty-year-old orchard, 96 ‘Montenegrina’ (Citrus deliciosa Tenore) tangerine trees, grafted onto Poncirus trifoliata Raf. were rated as having a very light fruit load. The trees were sprayed with 0, 20, 40 or 60 mg.L-1 GA3.The foliar applications were made on April 30, May 20 and June 10. GA3 did not supress flowering of the trees. The number of fruits per tree and yield were not affected by the treatments regardless of treatments. In 2005, the experiment was repeated. The rates and timings of GA3 were the same, but were sprayed at the start of fruit color change. The treatments did not affect juice percent and acidity (TTA). GA3 rates increased total soluble solids (TSS) and TSS/TTA ratio and delayed the fruit degreening. Histological studies on bud longitudinal sections were realized every 15 days between April 30 and August 30. The period in which the vegetative buds are induced to flower bud with emission of the first sepals occurs on the first half of August.

Abstract:
Italy is the birthplace of opera, and it provides a rich soil for the development of opera for centuries. In Italy, there are many masters who have or are making their own contributions to opera, including the great composers such as Verdi and Puccini and the outstanding singers like Caruso and Pavarotti. In the thesis, I will talk about the "living fossil" of the contemporary opera world - Angelo Loforese. In nearly 100 years of his artistic career, Loforese has devoted himself in vocal skills and education, and the inheritance of the artistic spirit. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the history of Italian opera and the relationship between opera and social background in each historical period, the historical development of tenor, and finally an overview of the career of Angelo Loforese. The second chapter is the translation from Italian to Chinese. I translated the first, third and twelfth chapter of Domenico Gullo's book "Angelo Loforese - il tenore con la valigia pronta sotto il letto". The book reviews the life of Loforese through dialogues and the author's memory. The third chapter is the translation commentary. In this chapter I use the “macroscopical -- microscopical” writing method. Firstly I analyze the genre of the original text, the target reader etc. Secondly I explain the problems that I’ve encountered when translating the text and the translation strategies used. In this chapter, I focus on combining the translation theories with practical examples.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study aimed to survey the community of predatory arthropods in an organic orchard of Citrus deliciosa Tenore, var. Montenegrina (29º37’51”S and 51º28’10”W), located in Montenegro County, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Samplings were carried out fortnightly, from March 29th, 2004 to March 14th, 2005. At each sampling occasion, a sample was taken from each one of 24 randomly selected trees, at both sides of the canopy facing the inter-rows. Henceforth, 48 sampling units/occasion were obtained shaking a branch of the plant with a wood stick and collecting the arthropods that fell on a sheet of white cloth (1m2) laid under the canopy tree. The 26 sampling occasions rendered 3,787 individuals of predatory arthropods, 3,129 belonging to Arachnida and 658 to Insecta, distributed in 112 species. Leptus sp. 1 (Acari: Erythraeidae), Amblyseius saopaulus Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Camponotus sp.1 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) were the most abundant species. Based upon the adults, 53 species of Araneae were recognized, belonging to eight families. Among Acari, considering immatures and adults, eight species were recorded in three families. In Insecta, it was found individuals of the Orders Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, Thysanoptera e Hemiptera, amounting to ten families and 51 species. Arthropods were most abundant in winter (521 individuals), whereas the greatest richness was verified during spring, attaining 76 species. Considering only arachnids, individuals were more abundant in winter (42.1%), meanwhile the greatest richness was registered in spring (41 species). Relative to the diversity indices, in this group, Margalef was higher in spring, and Shannon-Wiener and Simpson in the summer. Relative to insects, both abundance (29.3%) and richness (35 species) were more elevated in spring, as well as the values of Shannon- Wiener and Margalef. Nevertheless, the Simpson’s values were similar among seasons. These findings evidence the high diversity of predatory arthropods occurring in this agroecosystem and furnish clues to the management and conservation of these species.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to give a contribution to the study of the administrative determination of the individuals’ total taxable income, using their living standard as a starting point. The legal framework is that of the novel art. 38 of Presidential Decree nr. 600 of 1973, which provides for two different methods of tax assessment (the “synthetic” and the “redditometro”). The distinguishing feature of these assessment methods is that they are not focused on income sources. On the contrary, they emphasize situations occurring when income is used to cover personal or family expenses that seemingly exceed the amount of taxable income declared in the tax return.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the first half of the 20th century, the incidence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) has increased in Sardinia. T1D results from autoimmune destruction of insulin, producing beta cells of the pancreas; MS is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, causing neurological affliction; Autism is defined as a complex developmental disability that generally appears during the first three years of life. Concerning MS and T1D, Sardinia island has one of the highest incidence rate in the world. In this island, there is the presence of phenotypes of these diseases, due to the homogeneous genetic background of the local population. Indeed, Sardinia population is a genetic isolate. The genetic background by itself does not explain such increasing incidence. T1D and MS increase with latitude, but Sardinia is an exception. Furthermore, mining exploitation was one of the most important economic activities in Sardinia during the past centuries and a lot of data are today available for the researchers. For this reasons Sardinia is an ideal setting to study a possible correlation between environmental factors and the diseases above, because of sardinian people genetic background and environmental peculiarities of the island. A set of environmental data and the frequency data of MS, T1D and ASD were investigated to evaluate the correlation between environmental factors and the frequency of these diseases. In particular, among the environmental factors, geochemical data are included in the Geochemical Database of the Department of Civil, Environmental Engineering and Architecture (DICAAR) of the Cagliari University. This Database is populated by thousands of data concerning soils, rocks and stream sediments. A stream-sediment-type sampling, which is widely used for mineral prospecting, has the advantage of effectively representing the overall geochemical print of a wide portion of territory such as a stream basin. Environmental and diseases data were analyzed through the statistical methods which were used by mining prospections activities. Environmental factors considered in this study are: geochemical values of each lithology, lithology and geology, sun exposure and climate. Also spatial analysis distribution of MS, T1D and ASDs was done. Therefore, a correlation between the environmental factors in reference to the total population and the frequency of the diseases was evaluated. Moreover, the correlation between the environmental factors in both male and female population and the frequency of the diseases was investigated. In a first time these relationships were investigate for each municipalities. Afterwards, 109 Homogeneous Areas (HA) from lithological point of view were identified. Each Homogeneous Area includes one or more municipalities, which have the same lithological features. Then, the relationship between the environmental factors and the frequency of diseases was evaluated for each HA. About T1D analyses, they revealed negative associations between the incidence of the disease and some elements, such as Cu (r = -0.349, Pvalue = 2*10-4) and Zn (r = -0.332, Pvalue = 4.20*10-4), while, concerning MS, a mild correlation was present between Cu (r = -0.460, Pvalue = 1*10-3) and the distribution of the disease in the male gender. A significant correlations was calculated among Pb (r = 0.478, Pvalue = 3.43*10- 6), Cd (r = 0.412, Pvalue = 8.10*10-5), Zn (r = -0.378, Pvalue = 3.3*10-4) and the presence of ASDs. In this research was used for the first time a geo-epidemiological approach to identify environmental factors involved to the geographical distribution of above diseases. Moreover, the elements significantly correlated with MS, T1D and ASDs could be markers (pathfinders) of other elements not analyzed in this study (confounding), but they could be potentially involved on the onset of the diseases. Also, our results should be considered as hypothesis-generating rather than hypothesis testing study. This kind of study is unusual and it has a deep interdisciplinary approach so the present results must be better confirmed in future studies.

Abstract:
AbstractCalculating the variance of a family of tensors, each represented by a symmetric positive semi-definite second order tensor/matrix, involves the formation of a fourth order tensor $$R_{abcd}$$ R abcd . To form this tensor, the tensor product of each second order tensor with itself is formed, and these products are then summed, giving the tensor $$R_{abcd}$$ R abcd the same symmetry properties as the elasticity tensor in continuum mechanics. This tensor has been studied with respect to many properties: representations, invariants, decomposition, the equivalence problem et cetera. In this paper we focus on the two-dimensional case where we give a set of invariants which ensures equivalence of two such fourth order tensors $$R_{abcd}$$ R abcd and $$\widetilde{R}_{abcd}$$ R ~ abcd . In terms of components, such an equivalence means that components $$R_{ijkl}$$ R ijkl of the first tensor will transform into the components $$\widetilde{R}_{ijkl}$$ R ~ ijkl of the second tensor for some change of the coordinate system.

Abstract:
Orientation tensors are widely used to describe fiber distri-butions in short fiber reinforced composite systems. Although these tensors capture the stochastic nature of concentrated fiber suspensions in a compact form, the evolution equation for each lower order tensor is a function of the next higher order tensor. Flow calculations typically employ a closure that approximates the fourth-order orientation tensor as a function of the second order orientation tensor. Recent work has been done with eigen-value based and invariant based closure approximations of the fourth-order tensor. The effect of using lower order tensors tensors in process simulations by reconstructing the distribution function from successively higher order orientation tensors in a Fourier series representation is considered. This analysis uses the property that orientation tensors are related to the series expansion coefficients of the distribution function. Errors for several closures are investigated and compared with errors developed when using a reconstruction from the exact 2nd, 4th, and 6th order orientation tensors over a range of interaction coefficients from 10−4 to 10−1 for several flow fields.

Abstract:
With the increasing popularity of streaming tensor data such as videos and audios, tensor factorization and completion have attracted much attention recently in this area. Existing work usually assume that streaming tensors only grow in one mode. However, in many real-world scenarios, tensors may grow in multiple modes (or dimensions), i.e., multi-aspect streaming tensors. Standard streaming methods cannot directly handle this type of data elegantly. Moreover, due to inevitable system errors, data may be contaminated by outliers, which cause significant deviations from real data values and make such research particularly challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel method for Outlier-Robust Multi-Aspect Streaming Tensor Completion and Factorization (OR-MSTC), which is a technique capable of dealing with missing values and outliers in multi-aspect streaming tensor data. The key idea is to decompose the tensor structure into an underlying low-rank clean tensor and a structured-sparse error (outlier) tensor, along with a weighting tensor to mask missing data. We also develop an efficient algorithm to solve the non-convex and non-smooth optimization problem of OR-MSTC. Experimental results on various real-world datasets show the superiority of the proposed method over the baselines and its robustness against outliers.

Full text
Abstract:
Material behavior of short-fiber composites can be found from the fiber orientation distribution function, with the only widely accepted procedure derived from the application of orientation/moment tensors. The use of orientation tensors requires a closure, whereby the higher order tensor is approximated as a function of the lower order tensor thereby introducing additional computational errors. We present material property expectation values computed directly from the fiber orientation distribution function, thereby alleviating the closure problem inherent to orientation tensors. Material properties are computed from statistically independent unidirectional fiber samples taken from the fiber orientation distribution function. The statistical nature of the distribution function is evaluated with Monte-Carlo simulations to obtain approximate stiffness tensors from the underlying unidirectional composite properties. Examples are presented for simple analytical distributions to demonstrate the effectiveness of expectation values and results are compared to properties obtained through orientation tensors. Results yield a value less than 1.5% for the coefficient of variation and suggest that the orientation tensor method for computing material properties is applicable only for the case of non-interacting fibers.

Abstract:
Moore et al. measured the six Reynolds stresses in a tip leakage vortex in a linear turbine cascade. Stress tensor analysis, as used in classical mechanics, has been applied to the measured turbulence stress tensors. Principal directions and principal normal stresses are found. A solid surface model, or 3-d glyph, for the Reynolds stress tensor is proposed and used to view the stresses throughout the tip leakage vortex. Modelled Reynolds stresses using the Boussinesq approximation are obtained from the measured mean velocity strain rate tensor. The comparison of the principal directions and the 3-d graphical representations of the strain and Reynolds stress tensors aids in the understanding of the turbulence and what is required to model it.

Abstract:
Low-rank tensor factorization or completion is well-studied and applied in various online settings, such as online tensor factorization (where the temporal mode grows) and online tensor completion (where incomplete slices arrive gradually). However, in many real-world settings, tensors may have more complex evolving patterns: (i) one or more modes can grow; (ii) missing entries may be filled; (iii) existing tensor elements can change. Existing methods cannot support such complex scenarios. To fill the gap, this paper proposes a Generalized Online Canonical Polyadic (CP) Tensor factorization and completion framework (named GOCPT) for this general setting, where we maintain the CP structure of such dynamic tensors during the evolution. We show that existing online tensor factorization and completion setups can be unified under the GOCPT framework. Furthermore, we propose a variant, named GOCPTE, to deal with cases where historical tensor elements are unavailable (e.g., privacy protection), which achieves similar fitness as GOCPT but with much less computational cost. Experimental results demonstrate that our GOCPT can improve fitness by up to 2.8% on the JHU Covid data and 9.2% on a proprietary patient claim dataset over baselines. Our variant GOCPTE shows up to 1.2% and 5.5% fitness improvement on two datasets with about 20% speedup compared to the best model.

Abstract:
In this paper, a general type of Eshelby-like stress tensor is defined which is based on the right stretch tensor and is equal to the product of a general class of strain and the corresponding conjugate stress tensor. The Eshelby-like stress tensor depending on the fact that from which side the stress tensor is multiplied by, is categorized into the right-weighted and left-weighted ones. General relations for conjugate strains of Eshelby-like stress tensors are investigated using the method, based on the definition of energy conjugacy and Hill’s principal axis method.

Abstract:
This paper studies the impacts of state appropriations on staffing and salaries at public higher education institutions in the United States using employment and revenue data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, along with an instrumental variables strategy borrowed from Deming and Walters (2018) and Chakrabarti, Gorton, and Lovenheim (2020). The instrument sidesteps the potential endogeneity of state appropriations for a given institution in a given year by interacting an institution’s historical reliance on state appropriations with total state appropriations for all higher education institutions in a given year. The results suggest that higher state appropriations are associated with an increase in tenure-track assistant professors at four-year institutions. They are also associated with an increase in part-time instructional staff at both four-year and two-year institutions. However, they are not associated with a change in the number of tenured faculty. Appropriations are also positively related to salaries for a variety of employee groups, although notably not for instructional staff who are instructors, lecturers, or without an academic rank. Overall, the results show that public higher education institutions use state appropriations in a variety of ways, but I do not find evidence that they replace contingent faculty with tenured or tenure-track faculty when appropriations rise.
