Abstract:
Purpose By using table tennis as an example and conducting an in-depth investigation into the impact of market demand factors on membership consumption of table tennis club members in the USA, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate the opportunities and marketing efforts needed for Asian sports to survive and thrive in North America, in which consumer demand factors assessing core program features of table tennis clubs were found to be very influential of cognitive, affective, and behavioral consumptions of table tennis club members. Design/methodology/approach Through conducting a review of literature, observations of club operations, and interviews of club administrators and club members representing various table tennis clubs, a preliminary questionnaire was formulated for this study. The initial questionnaire was submitted to a panel of five experts, for a test of content validity. By incorporating their suggestions, editing was made to improve a number of the items in the questionnaire. Data collection took place in two national table tennis tournaments, two local tournaments, and six table tennis clubs. Procedures in SPSS 19.0 (SPSS, 2009) and Mplus 5.21 were carried out for data analyses. Findings The findings of this study are that market demand factors would be significantly related to consumer perceived benefits and perceived value, and in turn related to consumer satisfaction of table tennis club membership. The market demand factors had a positive impact on perceived value and benefits confirmed the theoretical framework and previous research findings, which also made a practical sense that a table tennis club needs to offer product features and meet expectations of its current and potential members in order to enhance program value and benefits perceived by its members. Originality/value The past two decades have marked the speediest rise of a globalized sport production and consumption trend. In an era of globalized sport marketplace, sports have become a business commodity to meet the needs of commerce. For an Asian sport to penetrate into the North American marketplace as table tennis has done, it would be wise to develop regional network, strategies, product, and promotions. It is expected that table tennis as a popular Asian sport will continue being spread to other parts of the world; thus, the findings of this study have potential relevance to promoting table tennis globally.

Tennis is examined as a recreational activity conducted within the context of a social system, in this case a tennis club. Participant observation revealed that this “leisure sport” was in fact highly work-like—the pursuit of athletic status being structured by a system of “implicit-tournament” norms defining where, when, and with whom one played—a predictable side effect of the dominant U.S. culture, with its economic ideology of laissez-faire capitalism and blurred distinction between work and play.

Tennis and golf, as well as numerous other sports, found their way to Germany in the era of the Wilhelmine Empire. Hoteliers in German health resorts, operators of private sports grounds or commercial playground companies, among others, played a significant role. Uhlenhorst, a district of Hamburg since 1894, was already the venue for major tennis tournaments with international players in the early 1890s. At that time, the London merchant, tennis player and sports official Walter Howard donated a silver cup to the Ice Rink Club on Uhlenhorst (Eisbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst), which was used as a prize for the “Championship of Hamburg”. This article goes into Walter Howard’s biography and outlines his commitment to Hamburg tennis, which also gave important impulses to women’s tennis.

Abstract:
The scheduling of a tennis school’s operation at a general tennis club is today done manually. This is a time consuming task, usually taking 2-4 weeks for the person responsible. This thesis aims to mathematically formulate the tennis school scheduling problem (TSSP), and to develop a computer based solution procedure to automate the scheduling process. The mathematical formulation of the problem has the structure of an optimization problem and the solution procedure that is developed is a heuristic algorithm for the specific purpose of this problem. Furthermore, a heuristic local search algorithm to improve the initial solution is developed, and the model is then tested on real data in a case study at a padel club in Stockholm. Furthermore, the result from the solution procedure is compared with the manually created schedule by the club on some key parameters from the mathematical model. The computerized solution procedure outperformed the manual scheduling procedure in terms of execution time and most of the times in the objective value of the generated schedule. In terms of the mathematical formulation neither the manually created schedule nor the schedules created by the algorithm gives feasible solutions to the problem. However, the padel club deems the schedules usable and will continue with the ongoing process to implement the model.

Abstract:
The design of the sports and recreation center in Vsetín solves the complete revitalization of the unused territory on the periphery of the town in the Ohrada district. The aim of the project is to revive the poorly accessible and neglected area and its use not only for a wide range of sports activities, but also for leisure activities and recreation. The whole area should be freely accessible and open to a wide range of public. Four main buildings are designed in the complex: a multi-purpose sports hall, a hotel, a tennis club and a snack bar with a bicycle service. There is a football field, a basketball court and a small football pitch on the open spaces between these objects, as well as two climbing walls, an outdoor gym and a parkour area with many obstacles. The rest of the areas are pavements and free grass areas intended for leisure and recreation of visitors.

Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/9234.

Full text
Abstract:
In this Doctoral Thesis, research has been conducted on tennis club facilities in Catalonia, with the aim of determining some design guidelines. Given the peculiarity of this type of sports facility, which due to its non-multisport character has been left out of the Xarxa Bàsica (Basic Network) specified and studied by the Generalitat de Catalunya, then we believe it is necessary to begin this study and provide some considerations for their conception and design. It is important to point out that we intend to study these facilities with the complexity with which we usually find them, that is to say, with a heterogeneous distribution in the territory and made up of sports, complementary and auxiliary spaces.
The theoretical base has provided a review of concepts surrounding the sports space and their historical evolution, their urban planning and the sociological aspects. Later, and going into the methodological foundations, applied research has been carried out because the concepts, collected and reviewed in the theoretical framework have been applied in the specific reality of the tennis courts, and in Catalonia. To carry out this part, we have developed proposals for geographical and territorial analysis, searching for the reasons for the current heterogeneous distribution of tennis courts and determining territorial deficits through the implementation of existing planning tools.
The use of these tools has facilitated the review of the descriptive and classifying parameters of sports facilities and it has allowed us to determine which of these parameters are definable from design and to be applied in the case of tennis courts. This was the starting point for the creation of an instrument to observe and study specific sports spaces (tennis courts) in the organisational reality that we normally find in our country (clubs).
Applying this to a representative sample of clubs, we search for the values of the analysis model which on the one hand make possible the approach to understanding the object of study, and on the other hand, to know, with the interrelation of its indicators, the values that provide greater suitability for the design in each level of observation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is about the professionalisation of voluntary leaders in two federal sports organisations. Our intention is to prove that professionalisation results in the increased technicalisation of federal responsibilities which tends to relate amateurs to a secondary role and to dilute traditional culture of voluntary work. We also want to show that because of this professionalisation there is a new generation of volontary leaders asserting themselves. Their commitment is more realistic, transforming the associative model into a managerial business model and the sports ethic into a professional code. At a time when we notice the masses turning away from politics and tradeunionism, should we see in this new militancy the consequences of people's disillusionment, which in the world of sport as everywhere else, results in the rise of individualism and the fading of great ideals ? Those are the evolution of voluntary work in sport and more globally of modern associative militancy

The reason to elaborate on this project is the current desolate state of the area, which already does not fulfil its purpose and serves only as lodgings and as a facility for the tennis club. My approach for this project implies identified accidence of buildings with an emphasis on maximal use of daylight, open spaces, green areas, and social interactions. All of these parts connect ideas and needs of future generations and deliver into the area new Genio Loci. For me, the biggest challenge in this complex area is finding the answer to meaningful use of the big amount of soil that is part of the canker tribune. The solution for this challenge might be in the creation of new access paths and footbridge to the buildings which provide several parts of space with different atmosphere and purpose. The main idea was the creation of a leisure public space with an emphasis on the variability of used areas that serve people from all age groups. It creates several main areas that divide the location and deliver various atmospheres for each generation. Additionally, the area as a whole is open and accessible to the public. A sign of long-term functional society is the ability of considerable behaviour toward public areas. Space in front of and between buildings happened to be more important than the building itself. In this case, we can talk about public life that is sustainable in time.

Abstract:
The assignment is an architecture and urban planning study of a sports and recreation center. The solved area is located in the town of Vsetín, in the part called Ohrada. Nowdays, the area is obsolete, unfunctional and also unmodern. My project is mainly focused to create a concept that responds to the environment, offers outdoor and indoor spaces for all generations. It allows better connection with nature, variable use, and division of area by function. The design is defined by the river Bečva on the west side and a busy 1st class road on the east side. It was important to separate pedestrians and cyclists from motor vehicles. The response to this restriction is to direct traffic in the area to the west, towards the river. This creates a terrain works that optically deflects the design in a quieter direction. Buildings are placed in the line and oriented in the western direction. After creating the terrain, I divided the area into several segments according to functionality. In the heart of the area, a multifunctional central hall with an inner climbing wall is set in the terrain. In front of it is a public space for meetings, sports and recreation. On the other side, there is a basketball court, a workout playground, a children's playground in front of the hall and a rest area of ??greenery closer to the river. If we continue southerly down, another cube set into the terrain is a building with a restaurant and a cafe. The southernmost building is a tennis club with facilities for athletes and squash. In front of the building there is a 9x tennis court with a grandstand. Closer to the river and the bike path there is an outdoor climbing wall. From the newly created embankment, the area is divided by a cycle path around the river. Behind the bridge is a green belt separated area which, unlike the previous ones, is tuned in a calmer spirit. We will find a building of a yoga and meditation center.

Abstract:
This chapter concentrates on knowledge-flow diagnosis and intervention in the private, not-for-profit sector. We look first at a national youth soccer organization. The discussion turns then to examine a local tennis club. The final case examines a nondenominational community church. In each case, we draw in part from secondary data sources for the background. This should prove helpful to the reader who is interested in following up to consider more details than presented in this volume. Here we also draw considerably from our own research and personal experience to fill in missing information, and we apply principles and techniques of this book to contribute new insights through examination of knowledge flows in the cases. Each application case concludes with exercises to stimulate critical thought, learning, and discussion.

Abstract:
This chapter tells the story of the controversial final minutes of Lincoln's state tournament game that began in chapter 1. Lincoln led Owensboro by 5 points with five minutes to play when Gilliard ordered his players to freeze the ball in order to protect the lead. The strategy failed, and Lincoln trailed by 2 points with eleven seconds remaining. Jewell Logan scored what would have been the tying basket and was fouled as time expired, but the referee at midcourt called Logan for walking, and Lincoln lost the game. Logan fielded reporters' questions with dignity, a trait that Young had worked to instill in his students. Flaget won the tournament, and McGill, chosen for the all-tournament team, became the first African American to start for a KHSAA champion. But he still couldn't play tennis at the Louisville Boat Club because of his color.

Abstract:
While I lived in Kathmandu, I regularly visited the American Mission Association. Members call it Phora, while some Nepalis call it “mini America.” It’s a club, and expatriates with the right kind of visa can apply to become members. It has a pool and tennis courts, a small gym, a field for baseball and soccer, a children’s playground, movie rentals, manicures and massages, a commissary and wifi café, and very polite Nepali staff. It has a certain colonial feel to it, which bothered me at times: yet it was also a haven where on a weekday afternoon I could exercise, read the papers, and eat lunch. Phora refers to phohara durbar, which in Nepali means “fountain palace.” The extensive, welltended grounds where dozens of expats and their children gather for hours on weekends was once the site of a Rana palace, a place for parties and dances, performances and cinema. It got its name because there were fountains throughout the gardens as well as inside the building. The ornate, neoclassical palace is long gone. In serious disrepair by 1960, the palace was demolished and the land sold to the American government. But phohara durbar has other claims to fame. It was also the site of the first piped water in the Kathmandu Valley. To explain how this came about, I’ll tell you a little more about the valley’s history and culture. The Lichchhavis and Mallas kept the city from growing beyond certain limits. They prohibited building outside a ring of shrines to various mother goddesses, like Kali. They knew that disturbing the land beyond that ring would be “killing your own food, your economic base,” says Sudarshan Tiwari, the architect and cultural historian who has reconstructed aspects of ancient life in the valley. There is still some agriculture in the Kathmandu Valley, because a few of the old landowners stubbornly hold on to their fields even as a sea of “wedding cake,” multistory, pastel houses engulfs them. But daily the green plots of rice and vegetables shrink as the valley succumbs, like the ancient water channels, to unplanned urban development.

Abstract:
Chapter 1, ‘In the tents of the King as well as the Muses: The life and reputation of Thomas Willis’, starts with the reaction to Willis’s death, aged 54, in 1675. From there, an account is given of Willis’s childhood and education in Oxford and his activities supporting the Royalist cause during the Civil War. After training in medicine, Willis’s casebook, involvement with the Oxford Experimental Philosophical Club and the episode of Anne Greene, spared from dissection through resuscitation after judicial hanging, and his lectures as Sedleian professor of Natural Philosophy in Oxford, are described. After moving to London in 1667, Willis was in demand as a physician and involved with the other Fellows of the Royal Society in reshaping ideas on respiration, fermentation, and muscular movement. The chapter ends with an analysis of the consolidation of Willis’s reputation as a major figure in the history of medicine.{146 words}
