Wright, Philip A. "The Perceptions of Northeast Tennessee Educators Regarding Arts Integration." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2016. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3144.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the perceptions of Northeast Tennessee Educators regarding arts integration. Specifically this study was an examination of the perceptions of district and K-8 school level administrators, K-8 general classroom teachers of math, science, social studies, or literacy, and K-8 arts specialists of dance, drama, music, or visual arts. Nine school districts in Northeast Tennessee agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected through an online survey system, SurveyMonkey.com. Data from 179 participants were used in the study. Seventeen items from the survey were measured on a 5-point Likert scale. Those items included: perceived need, claims of implementation, responsibility of implementation, comfort level for implementation, and the perceived possession of adequate resources and reported professional development for arts integration practices. The results concluded K-8 arts specialists' perceived need for arts integration, claims of arts integration implementation, and perceived comfort level for arts integration implementation were significantly higher than K-8 general education teachers. Additionally, individuals with previous arts experience in high school or college had a significantly higher perceived comfort level for arts integration implementation that individuals with no previous arts experience in high school or college. However, there were no significant differences in perceived need for arts integration, claims of arts integration implementation, and perceived comfort level for arts integration implementation between district and school level administrators and K-8 general education teachers, and between district and school level administrators and K-8 arts specialists. Subsequently, there were no significant differences among district and school level administrators, K-8 general education teachers, and K-8 arts specialists in regards to perceived responsibility for arts integration implementation, perceived possession of adequate resources for arts integration, and reported offerings of professional development for arts integration.

Maruéjouls-Koch, Sophie. "Le "Théâtre plastique" de Tennessee Williams : du "langage de la vision" à "l'écriture organique." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LORR0331/document.

Full text
Abstract:
When Tennessee Williams coined the phrase “plastic theater” in 1944, he described it as a language of “sounds, colors and movements,” a language freed from the limitations of words. His aim was to breathe new life into what he called “the exhausted theater of realistic conventions.” His ability to put the totality of theatrical experience into words manifests itself in the scripts of his plays. Williams is a creator of pictures, a playwright in the true sense of the word who found in painting and cinema the images he needed to elaborate his new language for the stage and move away from a “photographic likeness” he rejected because it was associated with realism. Gauguin, Van Gogh, De Chirico, Hofmann or Pollock are but a few of the many painters mentioned in his plays or essays who provided him with the means to enrich his vocabulary for the stage and lead his “plastic theater” toward “something more abstract.” But cinema also influenced him, giving him the opportunity to explore new possibilities and create a space between words and images where the elusive truth could be revealed. Images thus helped liberate Williams from the literary traditions as well as from the cultural codes that had defined and confined his writing from the very beginning. The writer who felt “wrapped up in literary style like the bandages of a mummy” found in images the subversive power he needed to express his true self and breathe life into words that he had always wanted to be “more than words.” From “the language of vision” to “organic writing,” Williams’s “plastic theater” evinces a desire for images

Waxstein, Christine Michele. "Digital Illustration: The Costume Designer’s Process For East Tennessee State University’s Spring Dance Concert 2012." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1504.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper's objective is to document the research and developmental processes of creating East Tennessee State University's Spring Dance Concert 2012 costume designs and renderings. This thesis describes design creation from research stage to idea formulation to the conception of costumes using inspirational images, illustrations, and performance photos and videos. The show was a challenging undertaking because it involved the collaboration of many in a compressed timeframe: 1 artistic director, 9 choreographers, 20 dances, 46 performers, 10 lighting designers, 1 costume designer, and 3 weeks to put it all together. Incorporating digital technology into the rendering process saved time, expenses, and helped clarify the designer's choices. This paper reflects the 2-year study of incorporating digital technology into the rendering process, culminating in the costume design for the Spring Dance Concert 2012.

Webb, Paul B. "The Associations between the Scores on the ACT Test and Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment in 281 Tennessee High Schools." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2005. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1062.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between and among various demographic and test score data with American College Testing (ACT) scores in 281 Tennessee high schools. This study also addressed which high school characteristics were related to the number of students meeting the ACT requirement for Tennessee lottery scholarships. In addition, this study examined Tennessee Value Added Assessment System's (TVAAS) assessment of ACT scores and its distribution of grades to Tennessee's high schools based upon its Value-Added analysis. The researcher performed correlations and multivariable linear regressions using socioeconomic status, ethnicity, dropout rate, graduation rate, attendance, average daily membership, per-pupil expenditure, teacher salary, Gateway exams, English I scores, and math foundations scores as independent variables and ACT scores as the dependent variable. The strengths of the correlations were examined and the best combination of independent variables was used to predict future ACT scores. Schools were divided into quartiles, based upon average daily membership and attendance rates, in order to analyze the differences in r2 values among the quartiles when running regressions to predict ACT scores. Quartiles, based upon the percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced meals, ethnicity, and average daily membership were used to study the difference in TVAAS' grade distribution based upon its assessment of ACT scores. The findings indicated that English I and II scores are most strongly associated with ACT composite scores including the four ACT subtests: math, English, reading, and science. English scores were found to be more strongly associated with ACT math scores than Algebra I scores and more strongly associated with ACT science scores than biology scores. It was found that the 21 composite ACT score requirements of Tennessee's lottery scholarships predominantly favored Caucasian students who did not qualify for free/reduced-priced meals. It was also discovered that TVAAS' ACT grades were unevenly distributed when schools were divided into quartiles based upon the percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced-priced meals, ethnicity, and average daily membership. Only one school in the quartile containing the schools with the highest percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced-priced meals scored above the state's average gain in the reading section of the ACT test.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if students scored significantly higher on the ACT after taking precalculus than they had scored on the ACT prior to taking precalculus. The researcher investigated whether there is an increase, not only in ACT composite scores, but also in ACT math subtest scores after high school students completed a precalculus course. The researcher also investigated differences regarding gender, socio-economic status, and race. Five Tennessee high schools from four counties and five different districts were used in this study. The study involved 208 participants and covered a span of three years. The findings indicated a significant difference in mean ACT composite and mathematics subtest scores for students after completing precalculus. The data were also compared by gender, race, and socioeconomic status for students who completed precalculus. The data indicated a significant difference in ACT composite scores for students completing a precalculus course regardless of gender or socioeconomic status.

Irvin, Jay. "Per Pupil Expenditure, Graduation Rates, and ACT Scores in Tennessee School Districts." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3306.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate and identify possible relationships between academic achievement, as measured by high school graduation rate and ACT composite scores of individual school districts within the state of Tennessee, and the per-pupil expenditure of each district. Research was conducted to determine whether a significant difference existed in academic achievement measures (high school graduation rate, ACT composite score) among school districts in the state of Tennessee that were classified as above average, average, and below average in relation to their per-pupil expenditure (PPE) in the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-16 school years. Ex post facto data were collected from the Tennessee Department of Education website. All pertinent school district information reported appeared on the Tennessee State Report Card website. This publicly reported and available data were collected by accessing the Tennessee State Report Card website. The researcher recorded data related to each school district that reported data in all three of the following categories: per-pupil expenditure, graduation rates, and ACT composite scores. This study examined the relationship of graduation rates to per-pupil expenditure in the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 school years. The results indicated that the high school graduation rates during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school year were not significantly affected by per-pupil expenditure. However, significance was found regarding high school graduation rates in the 2015-2016 school year (p =.016). There was a significant difference in the means between the bottom-third (93.537%) and the top-third (90.422%) of per-pupil expenditure levels during the 2015-2016 school year, with the top-third having significantly higher graduation rates. This study also examined the relationship of ACT composite score to per-pupil expenditures in the 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 school years. The results for all of the research questions indicated that the ACT composite score during all years was not significantly affected by per-pupil expenditure.

With the final passage of the Focus on College and University Success (FOCUS) Act which was signed into law on April 19, 2016, state universities within Tennessee are heading for major transitions in governance structure and autonomy. With changes moving at a speed atypical of higher education, these six soon-to-be former Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) universities must determine the best way to proceed from the current governance structure to a localized governing board while considering the future direction of the institution. Drawing on historical precedents and current policy changes, recommendations are made to the six universities for future governance structure, appointment of the board, and proposed future directions and policy discussions for the institutions

Winkler, Ellis H. "An Administrative Perspective of the Job Training Partnership Act in Selected Counties in Tennessee." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1986. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2831.

Abstract:
The problem of this study was to determine if, in selected counties in Tennessee, differences in the noncompletion rate, the positive termination rate, and the job retention rate existed in categories of participants in the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). This study followed the ex-post-facto design. A personal data form was developed for the purpose of gathering data relative to the personal characteristics of participants enrolled in the JTPA on-the-job training program between July 1, 1984 and June 30, 1985. The findings reflect data gathered on all 1,005 participants in the program. The chi-square test was applied to all 27 of the hypotheses. The statistical analysis was intended to determine significant differences in the participants categorized by sex, age, education, public assistance, unemployment compensation, hours trained, and type of training, in Service Delivery Area 2 in Tennessee. The differences showing significance in the study warranted the following conclusions: (1) The age of the participants significantly affected the positive termination rate of participants in selected age categories, and it was determined that the 18-21 age category had more positive termination participants than expected. (2) A comparison of the positive termination rate and the job retention rate by age indicated a difference existed in that there were significantly more job retention rate participants than positive termination rate participants in all four age categories. (3) A significant difference was found in the job retention rate of participants enrolled in the JTPA on-the-job training program. There were significantly more job retention participants who received unemployment compensation than expected and significantly fewer participants who did not receive unemployment compensation than expected. (4) The type of training received does significantly affect the positive termination rate of participants in selected training categories. The manufacturing/factory assembly line category had significantly fewer participants than were expected. However, the sales/service category had significantly more participants observed than were expected.

Eubanks, Kari. "The Relationship of School-Community Partnerships with ACT Benchmark Scores in Rural Tennessee Schools." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3334.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if a relationship existed between the quality of school-community partnerships and the average score of each ACT subtest for rural Tennessee high school students. Specifically, the researcher examined the following school-community partnerships: business partnerships, university partnerships, service learning partnerships, school-linked service integration, and faith-based partnerships (Sanders, 2006). Administrators from 62 rural Tennessee high schools rated the partnerships present in their schools using the Improving Community Partnership Quality rating scale developed by Sanders (2006). Each of these ratings was compared to the participating school’s mean score for each ACT benchmark to determine whether these partnerships could be linked to success on the ACT. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated for each partnership type and each ACT subtest. The results revealed that a statistically significant relationship did not exist between school-community partnerships and ACT subtest scores.

Abstract:
The ideas within this thesis are meant to clarify my explorations, research and painting practice during my studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. I expand on my general statements about being fascinated by advancing technologies and concerned about the after effects of these advancements. The writing explores my curiosity about the internal, skeletal structure of things and how they operate. I explain how the paintings are idiosyncratic hybrids that evoke animation, imaginary scientific propositions, blueprints, maps, and advancing technologies. The work combines these interests with my observations of day-to-day experiences. Isolated events provide found compositions which I then manipulate: a seemingly mundane bike ride gets mapped into a well–ordered schematic of social interaction.
