Full text
Abstract:
Data-driven low-order modelling has been enjoying rapid advances in fluid mechanics. Arguably, Sirovich (Q. Appl. Maths, vol. XLV, 1987, pp. 561–571) started these developments with snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition, a particularly simple method. The resulting reduced-order models provide valuable insights into flow physics, allow inexpensive explorations of dynamics and operating conditions, and enable model-based control design. A winning argument for proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is the optimality property, i.e. the guarantee of the least residual for a given number of modes. The price is unpleasant frequency mixing in the modes which complicates their physical interpretation. In contrast, temporal Fourier modes and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) provide pure frequency dynamics but lose the orthonormality and optimality property of POD. Sieber et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 792, 2016, pp. 798–828) bridge the least residual and pure frequency behaviour with an ingenious interpolation, called spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD). This article puts the achievement of the TU Berlin authors in perspective, illustrating the potential of SPOD and the challenges ahead.

Zhang, Xifang, Zhenqiang Yao, Haifeng Du, Jiacheng Song, Zhiyi Jin, and Wei Xu. "Wettability and Frictional Studies of PEEK Composites against Co-Cr Alloys with Surface Textures." Polymers 15, no. 19 (October 6, 2023): 4006. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/polym15194006.

Full text
Abstract:
With the aim of promoting the qualities for total hip joint replacement, the wettability and tribological behaviors of PEEK composites pins with two sets of different fillers (PEEK/CF or PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite) against Co-Cr alloy discs with five categories of surface textures (polished, orthogonal, spiral, r-θ, and orthogonal combined with spiral) were explored. It is revealed that the existence of CF in PEEK matrix increases the hydrophilicity in addition to the strength of PEEK, while the addition of PTFE increases the hydrophobicity of PEEK. The Co-Cr alloy discs with hydrophilic properties can be adjusted as hydrophobic, with the depth of textured grooves exceeding the critical sag height determined by the contact angle and the groove width. It can be concluded that PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite composite has a lower wear rate than PEEK only reinforced with CF against Co-Cr alloy, both without surface texture and with shallow or deep grooves. The existence of shallow grooves on the disc surface could help the PEEK blends to achieve a steady friction against Co-Cr alloy in addition to collecting the worn debris. PEEK blend pins with 10 vol% CF, 10 vol% PTFE and 10 vol% graphite can achieve a lower friction coefficient of no more than 0.2 against Co-Cr alloy discs with shallow grooves around 3.5 μm in orthogonal or spiral textures.

Abstract:
In this paper, injection molding parameters are optimized using the L18 Taguchi orthogonal array for mechanical strength and surface quality of the green part. The feedstock used consists of stainless steel powder (SS316L) with the powder loading of 63 vol. %, 63.5 vol. % & 64 vol. %. The binder compositions used are polyethelene glycol (PEG-73 wt.%), polymethyl methacrilate (PMMA-25 wt.%) and stearic acid (4 wt.%). Mould temperature, injection temperature, injection pressure, injection time, holding time and powder loading ware selected as signal factors using Taghuci’s method based on literature, where these parameters were significant in MIM. Results showed that the optimum parameters are: mold temperature at 650C, injection temperature at1450C, injection pressure at 650 bar, injection flow rate at 20 m3/s, holding time at 5 s and powder loading of 64 vol.%. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) result shown that mold temperature is the most influence in order to produce good green part’s surface quality while powder loading give the best result for green part’s strength.

Abstract:
To enhance the physical and mechanical characteristics of steam-cured concrete, an orthogonal experimental design was utilized to examine the effects of varying contents of fly ash (0 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, 20 wt%), silica fume (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%), basalt fiber (0 vol%, 0.05 vol%, 0.1 vol%, 0.2 vol%), and polypropylene fiber (0 vol%, 0.05 vol%, 0.1 vol%, 0.2 vol%) on its mechanical properties. Utilizing range and variance analyses, this study identified four preliminary optimized compositions of concrete incorporating fly ash, silica fume, basalt fiber, and polypropylene fiber. On this basis, in order to determine the optimal mix proportion, the mechanical performances, the pore characteristics, and the microstructure of four optimized mix proportions were analyzed. According to the results of macroscopic, fine, and microscopic multi-scale tests, the addition of 15 wt% fly ash, 10 wt% silica ash, 0.2 vol% basalt fiber, and 0.1 vol% polypropylene fiber to the steamed concrete is the best to improve the performance of the steamed concrete. Compared to ordinary concrete, the compressive strength increases by 28%, the tensile strength increases by 40%, and the porosity decreases by 47.2%.

Abstract:
The effect of a swell on the statistical distribution of a directional short-wave field is investigated. Starting from Zakharov's spectral formulation, we derive a new modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation appropriate for the nonlinear evolution of a narrow-banded spectrum of short waves influenced by a swell. The swell-modified equation is solved analytically to yield an extended version of the result of Longuet-Higgins & Stewart (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 8, no. 4, 1960, pp. 565–583) for the modulation of a short wave riding on a longer wave. Numerical Monte Carlo simulations of the long-term evolution of a spectrum of short waves in the presence of a monochromatic swell are employed to extract statistical distributions of freak waves among the short waves. We find evidence that a realistic short-crested wind sea can on average experience a small increase in freak wave probability because of a swell provided the swell is not orthogonal to the wind waves. For orthogonal swell and wind waves we find evidence that there is almost no significant change in the probability of freak waves in the wind sea. If the short waves are unrealistically long crested, such that the Benjamin–Feir index serves as indicator for freak waves (Gramstad & Trulsen, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 582, 2007, pp. 463–472), it appears that the swell has much smaller relative influence on the probability of freak waves than in the short-crested case.

Abstract:
AbstractLaminar helically-symmetric gravity-driven thin-film flow down a helically-wound channel of rectangular cross-section is considered. We extend the work of Stokes et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 25 (8), 2013, 083103) and Lee et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 26 (4), 2014, 043302) to channels with arbitrary curvature and torsion or, equivalently, arbitrary curvature and slope. We use a non-orthogonal coordinate system and, remarkably, find an exact steady-state solution. We find that the free-surface shape and flow have a complicated dependence on the curvature, slope and flux down the channel. Moderate to large channel slope has a significant effect on the flow in the region of the channel near the inside wall, particularly when the curvature of the channel is large. This work has application to flow in static spiral particle separators used in mineral processing.

Abstract:
A kind of slurry which is applicable for fine atomizing CMP was made and the optimal results were obtained through orthogonal experiments by comparing fine atomizing CMP and traditional CMP. The research results show that the material removal rate of fine atomizing CMP is 52.23% of traditional CMP, and the dosage of the slurry used in fine atomizing CMP only accounts for 10 vol% compared to traditional CMP. The surface roughness after the fine atomizing CMP is 2.5nm which is better than that of the traditional CMP (3.0nm).

Abstract:
This study analyzes the influence of ethanol as gasoline blend on a spark ignition engine and a mathematical tool is proposed based on multi attribute decision making approach to select optimal combination of operating parameters of a variable compression ratio multi fuel engine considering objective, subjective and integrated weights of attributes. Test fuels used were ethanol-gasoline blends having ethanol in proportions of 10, 20, 30 and 40 vol %. The compression ratio was varied as 6, 7, 8 and 9. The load was varied as 25, 50, 75 and 100%. A series of 16 experiments were conducted by adopting Taguchi based design of experiments resulting in L16 orthogonal array. The result of proposed method shows that the combination of compression ratio 6, ethanol-gasoline blend 30 vol% at a load of 75% is found to the best choice from among other trails and was validated using graph theory matrix approach

Abstract:
In this study, the Taguchi method was used to investigate the effect of citric acid and malic acid on the leaching of SmCo magnet waste. First, we used a L16(45) orthogonal table to conduct experiments. Second, we conducted a factor effect analysis on the experimental results of the orthogonal table to understand the influence of temperature, acid concentration, solid–to–liquid ratio, time, and hydrogen peroxide on the leaching efficiency and we obtained the priority order of the factors affecting the leaching efficiency. The priorities of citric acid and malic acid were H2O2 > temperature > S/L > time > acid and temperature > time > S/L > H2O2 > acid, respectively. Finally, the optimal leaching parameters were obtained through confirmation experiments. For optimal leaching rates with citric acid, the amount of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) added was 2.0 vol.%, the temperature was 90 °C, the S/L ratio was 5 g L−1, the time was 135 min and the acid concentration was 1.0 mol L−1, resulting in leaching efficiencies of Sm, Co, Fe, and Cu of 87.62, 93.82, 97.10, and 92.84%, respectively. For optimal leaching rates with malic acid, the temperature was 80 °C, the time was 75 min, the S/L ratio was 7.5 g L−1, the amount of hydrogen peroxide added was 3.5 vol.%, and the acid concentration was 1.5 mol L−1, resulting in leaching efficiencies of Sm, Co, Fe, and Cu of 75.18, 74.58, 82.42, and 1.35%, respectively.

Abstract:
We study the shear rheological behavior of a commercial stereolithography paste containing ≈50 vol. % of zirconia particles (diameter ≈ 100 nm) with the aim to clarify physical mechanisms occurring during the “scraping” step of this yield stress fluid. Beyond a flow curve characterized by a high zero-shear viscosity accompanied with an overall shear-thinning behavior, we investigate in a systematic way the transient regime through start-up experiments. We demonstrate that a structural transition occurs between 10−2 and 10−1 s−1, resulting in an apparent interruption of the shear-thinning. The corresponding transient response presents a pronounced extra-growth of the shear stress before to stabilize at high strain amplitude and a negative first normal stress difference peak, both effects become stronger at higher shear rates. These observations are rationalized based on the high interparticle friction owing to the polyhedral shape and the roughness of the particles. In addition, relaxation tests following the start-up experiments reveal that the samples submitted to shear rates higher than 10−1 s−1 cannot relax the shear stress to the same level as in low shear rate experiments, suggesting a durable structural modification likely to impact the quality of the parts prior to their debinding and densification. Finally, we utilize orthogonal superposition rheology to illustrate how the application of an oscillatory deformation during the scraping procedure could help to reduce the shear-thinning interruption and improve the stereolithography processing as already observed empirically during scraping.

Abstract:
Conventional drug delivery systems often cause side effects and gastric degradation. Novel drug delivery systems must be developed to decrease side effects and increase the efficacy of drug delivery. This research aimed to fabricate hydrogel beads for use as a drug delivery system based on basil seed mucilage (BSM), sodium alginate (SA), and magnetic particles (MPs). The Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis were used for the design and optimization of the hydrogel beads. Three factors, including BSM, SA, and MPs at four levels were designed by L-16 orthogonal arrays. BSM was the main factor influencing bead swelling, drug release rate at pH 7.4, and release of antioxidants at pH 1.2 and 7.4. In addition, SA and MPs mainly affected drug loading and drug release rate in acidic medium, respectively. Grey relational analysis indicated that the composition providing optimal overall properties was 0.2 vol% BSM, 0.8 vol% SA, and 2.25 vol% MPs. Based on the findings of this work, BSM/SA/MPs hydrogel beads have the potential to be used as a pH-sensitive alternative material for drug delivery in colon-specific systems.
