Abstract:
Chapter 2 surveys the various theories of time and explores their consequences for the possibility of time travel. Section 1 introduces the traditional debates over tense and distinguishes between three different views of temporal ontology: eternalism, presentism, and the growing block theory. Section 2 discusses eternalism and the double-occupancy paradox. Section 3 focuses on presentism and various versions of the “no destination” objection. Section 4 looks at the growing block theory and the worry that time travel would allow for future indeterminacy to creep back into the past. Finally, sections 5 and 6 look at the special and general theories of relativity and consider their implications for our understanding of time travel.

Abstract:
This chapter begins its analysis with a careful look at the specious present and then surveys many of the psychological temporal structures that arise in creatures like us. It also examines memory, anticipation, and the building up of our experience through time, focusing especially on the contrast between time from an “embedded” perspective and time from an external perspective. The chapter ends with some suggestions for how this work may link to one's conception of the self and also the metaphysics of time. In particular, it claims that the apparent fixity of the past emerges from the adoption of the “embedded” perspective it describes.

Abstract:
Beginning in the Far East over 2000 years ago the discussion in this chapter charts the movement of species found in contemporary urban environments around the globe. A city is dependent on trade for the resources required by the inhabitants to live and work. Some items of trade are plants and animals, and over time, many species have been introduced intentionally, and many others unintentionally (perhaps as a result of hitching a lift in or on items being traded between countries and continents) to become part of the urban flora and fauna. All the time that such global dispersal has been occurring, some floral and faunal species originally present in an urban area have become locally extinct. These processes of invasion and extinction are controlled by filters and process, and there are certain traits, the possession of which is seemingly beneficial to organisms in urban environments.
