Introduction -- Globalisation and network society -- Digital television -- Communication policy and development of Thai TV -- Research design -- Results : DTV: Thailand at the crossroads -- Results: National DTV policy and trends -- Results: Thai TV stations in technological transition (part 1) -- Results: Thai TV stations in technological transition (part 2) -- Discussion and conclusion.
The evolution of television and broadcasting technology from analogue to digital brings about changes in the global television industry. This technological transition is related to a political push which is highly concerned with national public interest in relation to socio-economic forces. Thailand's TV industry has also adopted and used digital television (DTV) technologies since the late 1990s in its TV production and broadcasting. The Thai government broadcasting regulators are expected to play a key role in launching and issuing national DTV policy. However, they seem to be involved in a conflict of interest which has negatively impacted Thailand's DTV transition. --This study selects Thailand's TV industry as a case study of a developing country in response to global technological transition. The thesis aims to explore major drives influencing Thai broadcasting in the shift from analogue to digital. It provides recommendations vis-à-vis the establishment of national DTV policy, and the current use of DTV technologies by Thai TV stations. The research project was conducted in Bangkok, Thailand, between October 2006 and October 2007, after the September coup in 2006. Two research methodologies employed in the study are (1) in-depth interviews with 26 experts (TV station administrators and mass communication scholars), and (2) observations of the nine TV stations. --Theoretical concepts in globalisation of communication echnologies and communication policy are reviewed. The research reveals two major pushes significantly forcing Thailand's TV industry into a newly administrative sphere. These are: (1) global push, and (2) domestic push; both are extensively addressed in this thesis.

Scott, Fiona. "Young children's engagement with television and related media in the digital age." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22928/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is one output of a White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentship, devised by The Universities of Sheffield and Leeds in partnership with CBeebies. Taking a sociomaterial approach (Barad, 2003) to digital literacies in early childhood, this thesis focuses on United Kingdom (UK) preschool children's intra-actions and social practices (Wohlwend, 2009) with television and related media (TV&RM) at home. It examines how both well-established and new verbal and non-verbal intra-actions constitute children's unique social practices. Drawing on Bourdieu's notion of habitus (1977), this thesis asks how social class is implicated in these practices. These inquiries are addressed empirically using a mixed-methods approach. The results of a UK-wide survey of 1,200 parents of preschool children and ethnographic case studies with 6 families in Sheffield, UK are presented. Several original contributions to empirical, theoretical and methodological knowledge are made in this thesis. Firstly, in their everyday engagements with TV&RM, preschool children amalgamate fragments of media texts with other material and/or immaterial things to constitute synthesised texts ('synthesised practices'). Secondly, preschool children and their families share habitus in relation to TV&RM ('family media habitus'). Thirdly, preschool children have relationships with narrative media texts without ever having engaged directly with them, via proxies including physical artifacts and social contact ('proxy media engagement'). Fourthly, family members engage with preschool children's TV&RM interests in ways which extend their learning in relation to literacies. Middle-class families use their children's TV&RM interests as the basis for engaging children in school-like literacies learning ('media practice schoolification'). Working-class families tend to extend their children's TV&RM interests in terms of operational, critical and cultural digital literacies and embodied literacies. Methodologically, the thesis develops a framework for 'Sociomaterial Nexus Analysis' and 'nexus mapping'.

Abstract:
This thesis considers how television reflects on its own output in the context of newly created television programmes which seek to reconsider, reframe and re-contextualise the content of television programmes that have already been broadcast. It does this by considering a range of programmes created between 2002 and 2009 as part of my work as a practice based researcher. These programmes cover some of the key genres in contemporary television and reflect the development of forms and themes within the medium. The broad focus of this work is to seek to gain an understanding of what fresh meanings can be derived from re-using existing television content in new programmes that contextualise it with the provision of newly commissioned and created visual content. More specifically the work seeks to explore the role of the implied viewer and his or her proxies on screen and how this affects the construction and delivery of these new programmes. The programmes under consideration include archive based retrospectives of television dramas, lifestyle programmes and property formats. These are viewed from the perspective of key ideas in television studies including fan studies, celebrity culture, intertextuality, hybridity and television history. Taken altogether, it is argued the work constitutes a meta-practice in television.

Shirley, B. G. "Improving television sound for people with hearing impairments." Thesis, University of Salford, 2013. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/31007/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how developments in audio for digital television can be utilised to improve the experience of hearing impaired people when watching television. The work has had significant impact on international digital TV broadcast standards; it led to the formation of the UK Clean Audio Forum whose recommendations based on the research have been included in ETSI international standards for digital television, adopted into ITU standards for IPTV and also into EBU and NorDig digital television receiver specifications. In this thesis listening tests are implemented to assess the impact of various processes with a phantom centre channel and with a centre loudspeaker. The impact of non-speech channel attenuation and dynamic range control on speech clarity, sound quality and enjoyment of audio-visual media are investigated for both hearing impaired and non-hearing impaired people. For the first time the impact of acoustical crosstalk in two channel stereo reproduction on intelligibility of speech is quantified using both subjective intelligibility assessments and acoustic measurement techniques with intelligibility benefits of 5.9% found by utilising a centre loudspeaker instead of a phantom centre. A novel implementation of principal component analysis as a pre- broadcast production tool for labelling AV media compatible with a clean audio mix is identified, and two research implementations of accessible audio are documented including an object based implementation of clean audio for live broadcast that has been developed and publicly demonstrated.

Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to understand the impact of speed on the interrelation and the overlapping of the production and consumption of cinematic and televisual texts. It explores the immediacy of digital media and new economic processes, and how they are informing structures of perception, as well as lending themselves to new and different ways of seeing the moving image in the digital age. These visual expressions are evident in the changing perception of the long take; the increasing use of video gaming aesthetics and database narratives; new and variant forms of narrative and visual styles in television; and the speed of new media technology on new voices and avant-garde expressions in independent and DIY cinema (such as the Internet, personal camcorder, mobile screens, and desktop editing). Conversely, VCR, DVD, DVR devices (as well as online streaming and DVD and Blu-Ray rental sites) have transformed the consumption of the moving image. Time-shifting devices allow for halting and controlling the flow of passing time, permitting for greater textual analysis. And, reciprocally, these new perceptions of the moving image inform expressions of filmic time and space. The speed of digital media and new economic formations raise concerns about lived reality and the attenuation of time, place, and community. It brings forth questions of the waning of pastness and memory, the diminishing of critical distance, and the vanishing of slow time. I argue, however, these shifts that are occurring in cinema and television illustrate that processes of speed are not the prime determinant in the production and consumption of moving images. Rather, they are based on a contingent and open-ended model of articulation--sites where disparate elements are temporary combined, unified, and thus, practiced and lived under the ever-changing conditions of existence.

Cant, Whitney. ""I am excessively diverted" : recent adaptations of Pride and Prejudice on television, film, and digital media." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/46382.

Abstract:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is the proverbial choice for adaptation, especially her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813. Remarkably, this two hundred-year-old novel written by a lady who never married, always lived at home, and died at the age of forty-one, is one of the most timeless stories in English literature. Adapters are drawn to the story of Elizabeth and Darcy, both to pay reverence to the original, and to impart their own vision of the classic tale of first impressions. In the past two decades, the most creative, popular, and financially successful adaptations have emerged: the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice directed by Simon Langton, the 2005 feature film Pride & Prejudice directed by Joe Wright, and the 2012 transmedia storytelling experience The Lizzie Bennet Diaries directed by Bernie Su. This thesis utilizes the three components of Linda Hutcheon’s A Theory of Adaptation (2006) to discuss these works at length. After a preliminary chapter outlining the major adaptations theories, in Chapter Two I examine the 1995 BBC miniseries as a formal entity or product; in Chapter Three I discuss the 2005 film as a process of creation; and in Chapter Four I analyze the 2012 transmedia experience as a process of reception. This thesis argues that each of these adaptations does something remarkably different to set itself apart from the novel and the adaptations before it. I claim that adaptations of Pride and Prejudice from the 1990s onward respond back to the most recent adaptation just as much as they do the original novel, affirming the increasing popularity of Pride and Prejudice as an adaptive source text.

Abstract:

In a Swedish setting an audience orientation is applied to investigate public service TV in the ongoing development of terrestrial digital television. Focus is on institutionalized politics and public service TV companies Sveriges Television (Swedish Television) and Utbildningsradion (Education Radio). In a case study through a multitude of material, emphasizing policy documents and interviews but also including media coverage, it is explored how and why the audience is involved in public service digital TV development. Is it an operation in the public interest, and what does this mean for public service as a media policy principle? The empirical result indicates a complex and problematic audience, which is not constantly prioritized but always present. The audience legacy is threatened in public service TV by a consumer orientation. Concluding implications are on the one hand that feedback from the audience can not only be based in ratings and market analysis. On the other hand there is a need for an attitude towards public service legitimacy as utopian realism.

Abstract:
This thesis inspects the changes that the Spanish television’s structure has undergone since the moment of the digital switchover in 2010 until the release of the first digital dividend and the launch of the last free-to-air channels in 2016. Within this reference period, Atresmedia and Mediaset, the two foremost players leading the free-to-air TV market before the arrival of DTT, strengthened their positions through two large acquisitions. These market concentration processes were influenced by the national and European media policy, as well as by the global dynamics of the audiovisual sector, and they ended up reinforcing the private duopoly in the Spanish market. Besides, the European regulation over the radio spectrum (including the very digitalisation and the first digital dividend) entailed the emergence of new players entering the free-to-air TV market, which nevertheless have not reached a relevant role in the market. In parallel, technological advances, along with the convergence between the audiovisual and the telecommunications and Internet sectors, have fostered the rise of new forms of distributing TV content via Over-the-Top, therefore traditional and emergent players are keen on taking part on the business. In the Spanish case, on the one hand, telecoms have resumed their interest and participation over the pay-TV business after a period of lethargy. On the other hand, emergent players (which are mainly global) have barged into the market and they appear to slightly erode the Spanish television market’s structure through their highly fragmented long tail distribution model. Form a hybrid approach that brings together technology, economy and media policy, this piece of research starts summarizing the years of analogic television in Spain, its main actors, regulation and structure. Subsequently, it defines and classifies the traditional and new actors in the Spanish television market and their position and performance within it between 2010 and 2016. Moreover, it explains the implications resulting from the technological and regulatory changes that affected the television industry after the digital switchover, so as to determine the features and trends in which the transformation particularizes between 2010 and 2016. Finally, in order to identify the common dynamics of the European context, and to highlight the particularities of the Spanish scenario, this thesis also reviews the English, French and Italian television markets during the reference period.

Abstract:
Mobile Digital TV (MDTV), the hybrid of Digital Television (DTV) and mobile devices (such as mobile phones), has introduced a new way for people to watch DTV and has brought new opportunities for development in the DTV industry. Nowadays, the development of the next generation MDTV service has progressed in terms of both hardware layers and software, with interactive services/applications becoming one of the future MDTV service trends. However, current MDTV interactive services still lack in terms of attracting the consumers and the service creation and implementation process relies too much on commercial solutions, resulting in most parts of the process being proprietary. In addition, this has increased the technical demands for developers as well as has increased substantially the cost of producing and maintaining MDTV services. In light of the aforementioned situation, the Thesis has contributed to this field, by proposing an innovative MDTV service creation and consumption system based on XHTML and Java ME. On the head-end it introduces a semi-automatic creation mechanism to facilitate a less technical and more efficient interactive service creation process. This enables designers and creative individuals to be actively involved in the MDTV service creation process and to develop interactive-rich MDTV service. On the client-end it employs an open-source software environment as the interactive service MDTV consumption platform, rendering the MDTV service implementation process as less proprietary as possible. Furthermore, the Thesis offers a discussion on the different MDTV interactive application models currently used and based on the proposed software, a novel MDTV service presentation method is further introduced and adopted instead of the Rich Media and ECMAScript based methods. Finally, a series of qualitative testing procedures have been implemented with regards to conducting an essential evaluation on the operability of the proposed software system.

Abstract:
A software application called Public News Network (PNN) is created in this thesis, which functions to produce an aesthetic experience in the viewer. The application engenders this experience by presenting a three-dimensional virtual world that the viewer can navigate using the computer mouse and keyboard. As the viewer navigates the environment she sees irregularly shaped objects resting on an infinite ground plane, and hears an ethereal wind. As the viewer nears the objects, the sound transforms into the sound of television static and text is displayed which identifies this object as representative of an episode of the evening news. The viewer "touches" the episode and a "disembodied" transcript of the broadcast begins to scroll across the screen. With further interaction, video of the broadcast streams across the surfaces of the environment, distorted by the shapes upon which it flows. The viewer can further manipulate and repurpose the broadcast by searching for words contained within the transcript. The results of this search are reassembled into a new, re-contextualized display of video containing the search terms stripped from their original, pre-packaged context. It is this willful manipulation that completes the opportunity for true meaning to appear.

Abstract:
This study compares the impact of media ownership, regulation and policy, and technology adoption on the introduction of digital terrestrial television in the United States and Mainland China. Through the use of a case study approach, a qualitative and quantitative examination is given. The results indicate that private group ownership throughout the U.S. digital terrestrial television industry and state ownership in China's television industry lead to the different paths to digital transition. Both governments, however, are deeply involved in respective digital initiatives and play an important role in the implementation from analog to digital. The technical standard adoption in the two countries places the underpinning for the future development of digital television (DTV), which also results in China lagging behind the United States by almost ten years. The differences of technological environments in households and income among consumers in the two countries further predict the intention to DTV adoption.

Abstract: The interactive TV is one of the great promises on Consumer Electronics field. However, there is no definitive standard to implement this new kind of device. For this reason, researches are conducted to develop a standard cheap, simple, and also the most functional as possible. Tracing this reasoning, this work proposes a model to insert hypermedia information on videos in a widely known and already implemented standard in current digital television sets: the MPEG standard. The proposed model is based on the creation of a particular concept of hypervideo, which references to complementary information are embedded on the content being presented. Such references and the coordinates of the objects in scene, which act as anchors to complementary information, both form what is defined as hypermedia information. Beyond the conception of the model, this work also presents a concept proof to demonstrate the viability of the ideas here depicted.

This research aims to analyse, in general terms, the digital environment in its essential technic and cultural aspects, so that, with this panoramic view, we ll be able to try ways to promote new content proposals, related to a powerful use of the media virtually composed. The specific-funtional focus surpasses itself as a metatextual content or just a decoder of processes and conditions that involve the search for a digital language. The focus reaches the pratical object: directing what was identified, apprehended and even speculated (why not?) about New Medias, to the digitalized television media like it´s been considered: an eminent real transformation. With the Digital TV introduction, we ll go into changes in many espheres. At least potentially this seems to be the most revolutionary incoming technology, with consequences in a large number of social aspects. It s not that potential can necessarily operate; the machine is not an end itself, but just a way to produce language. We can t say that potential as just a possibility is applied only to the social realities in development. Although the Digital TV is already in operation in the USA, Europe, japan and Canada, it is still no longer explored, even if compared with other digital medias (that are far from being examples os language investigation). Massive world; what s default here, seems to have its correspondent long distance. Technological collateral effect. The logic of this research is in the search for more questions that we are, in fact, used to. More links and non linear conections, interdisciplinarity and networks that we ve been able to dare with. Paying attention to the comunication treatment in the fluid space: our biggest resistance may be the most greatful indication of this work. Maybe it won t arrive to any solution, but working with doubts seems to be the virtual most compatible to real solutions digital based.

Abstract:
Media convergence is an expression that appears frequently in academic research and in the press. Some conceptual efforts about the term only consider technical aspects, understanding the phenomenon only as the combination of diverse media in a single environment or device, without addressing social and cultural issues. On the other hand, further arguments regarding the involvement of individuals in the constitution of convergence, without probing the analysis of the technological element. From this diversity of positions, this research makes a theoretical and epistemological movement to study the convergence between television and the web from a criticism of the scope of the concept to overcome your technician focus, but not disregard it, and also studing the social and cultural levels. The concept is dismembered in analytical categories, which are interdependent. In each of these categories transformations are discussed in the convergence process at technical, social and cultural levels. In theoretical production there is the prevalence of an understanding that convergence is an essentially technological process. This understanding underestimates social and cultural issues facing the development of new communication models based on more flexible processes of production, circulation and consumption of media content.

Abstract:
This study investigates the changing television landscape and consumption habits and the effects on the Swedish public service television(SVT). Recent shifts have amplified the ongoing decline of linear television and were marked by increasing migration of viewers to online video consumption and global streaming services. These new competitors escalate the challenges facing national broadcasters and emphasize the role of having a strong independent public service television that can remain relevant to all its audiences. SVT has been a pioneer in shifting to online and launched its video streaming service SVT Play in 2006. But the service is unable to recuperate the viewership bleeding from SVT linear channels, and reaching younger audiences has never been more challenging. The study presents a literature review and background referring to recent general trends in the television market, to put shifts and disruptions in the Swedish market in a larger context. We also present a thorough background on the Swedish television market focusing on the position of SVT and SVT Play. We discussed dynamics and drivers of recent structural and consumption shifts through in-depth interviews with key personnel from SVT as well as with other experts from different areas within the media and telecom industry. We seek to answer what future challenges and opportunities are for SVT Play and how to deal with those challenges and opportunities. The data collected were analyzed and reported in this study. The main findings indicate a new era ahead of public service heralded by the unprecedented decline of SVT broadcast and the increased consumption divergence in 2019. The study found that SVT Play has a central future role of public service television and should be further empowered to remain agile and relevant, through diverse, differentiated, and personalized offerings, but also through constant engagement with audiences and continuous learning of what they value and demand in a constantly changing media landscape.

Abstract:
With the emergence of the binary system and the convergence of digital media, communication devices such as cellular phones, computers and even television receivers have now taken on more than just the main functions for which each was developed. They are now part of, due to the interoperability between systems and the Internet, systems of which services and languages are now integrated to as well. If one was to focus entirely on television, it can be observed that television watching has now received new forms. The device itself is separate from the content. The TV signal moves away from its physical form and begins to navigate on the binary field. Thus, it is emancipated of its material form - the television device - and can now be seen on other platforms and devices, hence raising the signal\'s distribution and the possibilities of return channels to transmitters and receivers. This research has closely followed the digital television implementation scenario in Brazil and in the world, and observes the influences and transformations in introduced to society\'s daily routine and to the public arena by the digital system and the Internet. The thesis is structured in five parts that run through the different aspects related to television: its timeline and history, the technological principles that command its operation, the languages that distinguish it, its placement in the converging scenario, and is influence in society\'s daily routine. This project presents the result of a case study performed in 2014, during my Research Internship at the University of Sapienza, in Rome. It also includes data gathered during technical visits to the universities in Brighton and Portsmouth. This stage of the research allowed me to observe the current panorama of these countries in loco, two years after the switch off. It also gave me the opportunity to analyze the relationship of the Italians and the English with television media, as well as with other digital communications media and the relationship/opening of the television transmitters of each country to new transmission modalities of content on digital platforms. In order to perform this leg of the research, in addition to searching in bibliographical sources, I interviewed researchers and professionals of the radio broadcasting and telecommunications fields, who had directly participated in the analogue-digital TV transition process. In this thesis, I also present a report of a field study done in the East Side of São Paulo city. This study was developed with the help of educators and pupils of Intermídia Cidadã, a collaboration that belongs to the Community Communication Nucleus of the Tide Setubal Foundation. The experience, based on the Shared Production of Information, was helpful to showcase the arrival of digital television and the analogue blackout. It was also useful to consider the content of public TV in Brazil and to analyze the possibilities now available through digital TV for community communication. This research, of qualitative and quantitative intent, applied comparative and experimental methods and collected data through surveys, audio and video interviews, workshops, debates and bibliographic research. Among the authors mentioned, I would like to make special reference to the following: Mikhail Bakhtin, Lúcia Santaella, Sérgio Bairon, Arlindo Machado, Jesús Martín-Barbero, Gérman Rey, Nicholas Negroponte, Arlindo Machado, Eugênio Bucci, Manuel Castells, Clay Shriky, Henry Jenkins, Alberto Marinelli, Néstor García Canclini, Almir Almas, Jay David Bolter, Richard Grusin, Walter Benjamin, Rafael Ruiz and Márcia Tiburi.

The objective of the research project Jornal Nacional: technology advances and telejournalism 1.5 is to analyze the newscast Jornal Nacional of Globo Television Network from the point of view of its relations with technology advances and digital media, including social networks. We wonder how connected Jornal Nacional is with the technology advances of recent decades, with new forms of communication and their possible effects on the information content of the newscast. Another question is whether this connection would be democratizing the news, drawing more viewers. In order to answer these questions, we will compare the behavior of JN and their counterparts in cyberspace. The research corpus consists of records of the newscast Jornal Nacional of Globo Television Network and its extensions in the digital media: its website and its social networks. Four editions of the newscast Jornal Nacional will be selected, analyzed and compared, taking as its starting point an edition of the 1980s, an edition of the 1990s, an edition of the decade of 2000 and finally the last one, an edition of this year 2013. In this particular one, we will analyze its interaction with the digital media. The theoretical references consist of network literature written by scholars from our society and the consequences of a culture of real virtuality such as Manuel Castells' and Pierre Lévy's Cyberculture; the convergence culture and its new participatory actions in a critical theory of the new media, like Henry Jenkins's and Dominique Wolton's; pieces of work that will analyze the television language and its technological transformations such as Arlindo Machado's and Newton Cannito's; authors and works that emphasize the television journalism language such as Beatriz Becker and Guilherme Jorge de Rezende, among others. We suppose that, despite the current impact of digital media, the Brazilian television, and in particular the Brazilian television journalism remains conservative in what regards to interactivity, with consequences on its content. The relevance of the research is the importance of the national news Jornal Nacional, still a great source of Brazilian audiovisual information, measured by high ratings of audience

Abstract:
This case study evaluated Major League Baseball's (MLB) media product portfolio to identify how broadcast revenues have evolved over the past decade. This research looked back across baseball's long, dysfunctional history with broadcasters in order to recognize the significance of its ambitious use of online content. While MLB had failed to fully utilize the potential of broadcasting, the league's aggressive online strategy through its Advanced Media (MLBAM) division made it the industry leader in broadcasting live streaming sports video. MLBAM expanded its online streaming video to mobile phones and iPad, further expanding the distribution of its content. This research compared MLBAM revenue to traditional broadcast revenue while analyzing the online division's role in promoting the MLB brand. This case study concluded that while MLBAM had made a number of groundbreaking developments, the league could still improve its use of embedded, shared video clips, archived footage and international marketing in order to further extend the brand equity of the MLB, its thirty individual brands and its media product portfolio.

The digital age, with its new interactive and converging technologies, stimulates original forms of sociability, which are interconnected, intercommunicating and visualized through hyperscreens. Another kind of interaction arises from the digitalization and new speeds of contemporary communicative process. With the new order of knowledge, it is now possible to transgress the limits of physical space and linear time sequence, through the collective development of content through such telematics networks. Youth, compounding the generation of Digital Natives, gives voice to a new type of user or social actor, whose thinking is connected to other communication habits, consolidating singular cultural standards, demanding new languages and skills. Here, we address the nature of this Design of new connections, relations, interactions, systems and behaviors that emerge in the so called information society, interfering directly in social organizations, especially with regard to the audiovisual production chain. Investigating and deepening studies, through bibliographic and documentary research, on the project, the proceses and the products that, articulated as design, guide assumptions of information management and its interfaces applied to the production chain for audiovisual communication, we intend to map fields, stages, processes and actors involved in the production of contends for interactive Digital Television. Abstract:
Language-use has proven to be the most complex and complicating of all Internet features, yet people and institutions invest enormously in language and crosslanguage features because they are fundamental to the success of the Internet’s past, present and future. The thesis takes into focus the developments of the latter – features that facilitate and signify linking between or across languages – both in their historical and current contexts. In the theoretical analysis, the conceptual platform of inter-language linking is developed to both accommodate efforts towards a new social complexity model for the co-evolution of languages and language content, as well as to create an open analytical space for language and cross-language related features of the Internet and beyond. The practiced uses of inter-language linking have changed over the last decades. Before and during the first years of the WWW, mechanisms of inter-language linking were at best important elements used to create new institutional or content arrangements, but on a large scale they were just insignificant. This has changed with the emergence of the WWW and its development into a web in which content in different languages co-evolve. The thesis traces the inter-language linking mechanisms that facilitated these dynamic changes by analysing what these linking mechanisms are, how their historical as well as current contexts can be understood and what kinds of cultural-economic innovation they enable and impede. The study discusses this alongside four empirical cases of bilingual or multilingual media use, ranging from television and web services for languages of smaller populations, to large-scale, multiple languages involving web ventures by the British Broadcasting Corporation, the Special Broadcasting Service Australia, Wikipedia and Google. To sum up, the thesis introduces the concepts of ‘inter-language linking’ and the ‘lateral web’ to model the social complexity and co-evolution of languages online. The resulting model reconsiders existing social complexity models in that it is the first that can explain the emergence of large-scale, networked co-evolution of languages and language content facilitated by the Internet and the WWW. Finally, the thesis argues that the Internet enables an open space for language and crosslanguage related features and investigates how far this process is facilitated by (1) amateurs and (2) human-algorithmic interaction cultures.

This dissertation explores, from the media convergence, the interactive digital media, and its several manifestations (great social coverage, possibility of access, and democratization of information). The topic, which emerges from digital technologies, deals with the present essence of discussions. The research involves a reflection about the possibilities that the media convergence can provide to the interactivity, also about the present situation, as well as the development trends of the interactive levels, degrees, and models, in a medium term. It was taken into account the advent of the digital television, and the discussions about the interactivity in the electronic and digital media. Some questions were focused concerning to interactivity: if it can change a communication media from one-all to all-all ; if it can change a great potential media like the TV into a multimedia as it is in fact the Internet; or if it can generate a democratization of information as the political speech proposes. It became clear that the main difficulty to establishes a comparative analysis among the interactive media resides in the lack of DTV throughout the country. The approach was based on theoretical bibliography of contemporary authors (academic or not), like: Lev Manovich, Ken Freed, Pierre Lévy, Arlindo Machado, and Lúcia Santaella, as well as followed studies carried out in Brazil. The work had as purpose to contribute for the understanding of interactivity in the present social context, and of the perspectives formed within the media convergence

Abstract:
Considering the central importance of television today, there are comparatively few quantita-tive and qualitative studies on television financing. Indeed, there is currently no definitive, comprehensive standard work on analog and digital television financing. Apart from Pethig and Blind’s publication and collection of essays (1989), there are a number of monographs that deal with the subject of television financing; however, they unfortunately treat only cer-tain aspects of the topic. This thesis deals with traditional media economics within the framework of theoretical macro- and microeconomics rather than with political economy. It aims to take an objective look at television financing and to show how market participants behave economically and how their behavior is changing due to the process of digitalization. As television becomes digitalized, its role in society and the characteristics defining informa-tion as an economic good will change, as well. On the one hand, television is a cultural and meritorious good, that constitutes public service broadcasting and fulfills the social mission stipulated in the state broadcasting law. On the other hand, television is a private good, and as such is traditionally valuated and marketed according to the rules of economic competition. The first part of my thesis provides a comprehensive overview and description of the analog revenue sources of broadcasting corporations. The ways in which television programming is funded can be defined and classified differently, e.g. some distinguish between fee-based, advertising-based, and mixed-funding systems, while categorization according to advertising-, audience- and service-based funding models is also widespread. Due to the digitalization of television, the conventional funding models of analog television are increasingly being replaced and supplemented by new models known from the Internet and network economy as described by Negroponte, Shapiro/Varian, and Ze-dick/Picot/Schrape. The second part of my thesis examines the impact of digitalization on television funding and describes the new and diversified revenue sources. Digitalization and new ways of distributing and transmitting information will inevitably lead to changes in the television market. The mission of public service television will be chal-lenged and will have to be reevaluated. This will not only affect television funding but will also require business models and their value chains to be adapted. New players will assert themselves on the television market, challenging current positions of power and perhaps ulti-mately even replacing current television providers.

This academic work has the objective to understand the acting of the protagonist of cyberculture in Brazil, the user, as well as his relevance for the construction of television content. The interest in the scenario comes from the multiplication of mobile devices usage and social media, that allowed interactive subjects to have more access to information and share it at any time, generating a series of changes in their behavior and habits. That influenced the change of attitude of some TV programs which have begun to introduce content and themes to their programming influenced by the internet. The main problem of this research is connected to the questioning about which audience responds to the participation invitations performed by the open TV network and how it uses this feedback to generate content. It is noticed a territory constructed and groped by young people in a scenario of engagement, creating a new collaborative public space that boosts the capacity of articulation and action of users. The open TV network programming stimulates the usage of social media not only as a form of interaction, but also as a possibility to new branches of transmidia content. The financial interests of big TV broadcasters and companies stand in first plan, however the produced content constantly needs reformulation and freshness of new formats. The study is based on the work of important brazilian and international authors of communication area that contributed to reflection and construction of the theoretical basis of analysis, such as: Cannito and the challenges of TV in the digital age; Clay Shirky and the behavior of a new spectator and culture of participation; Eugenio Trivinho and relevant studies about glocal and cyberculture dromocracy; Henry Jenkins and convergences of current media and transmedia narrative; besides Thompson and the studies on the development of media. The corpus analysis focuses on the night programming of Rede Globo de Televisão (the soap opera Verdades Secretas and the reality show BBB16) during the second half of 2015 and the first half of 2016. The sistematic observation fell on both TV programs and individual behavior on Facebook and Twitter. To assist the empiric analysis of the corpus, sources of market and consumer research were used, as well as qualitative research carried out with users, which enhanced the final results of this work

Abstract:
This work aims to, in the context of the implementation of the digital TV in Brazil, promote reflexion on the concept of interactivity in current society, and, by considering the possibilities created by new technological supports, to contribute to the development of new formats and contents of hypermedia documents that truly contribute to the democratization of communication. In order to do that it carries out bibligraphic review which pursues not only theoretical support but also validation of the argument that the concept of interactivity goes through a process of banalization and needs depurating. Upon this is built a picture of the concept that stresses an existing diversity of terminology and definitions. The project itself opts for the characterizations of computer mediated interaction as reactive and mutual and use them in a case study of interactive programs for Brazilian digital television In addition to this it describes many other technical aspects involving the structuring of hypermedia documents, aiming to move through the paths of informatics and its concepts since this interferes meaningfully in the audiovisual productive processes. This journey leads to no-conclusive results, just as other studies related to the impacts of digital paradigm to the means of communication do not either, but it certainly explores the intersections that exist between TV and interactivity key questions that reflect the questioning of this dissertation.

Abstract:
As digital technologies rapidly evolve, traditional television is being disrupted by the development of more devices, screens, and content. Over-the-top television [OTT TV] is replacing linear TV at a growing rate. A majority of consumers of over-the-top content are found in the generational cohort, Generation Z. As true digital natives, this generation is comfortable navigating a variety of online TV platforms and devices, while also being more susceptible to short attention-span and information overload. It is therefore necessary to understand how this emerging cohort makes choices in a TV landscape that is becoming increasingly overloaded with new content. The purpose of this study is to understand which user interface components Generation Z takes into consideration when selecting content in OTT TV. Multiple methodologies were selected to investigate these media habits. Think-aloud usability testing and interview determined Generation Z’s natural media behavior while browsing OTT content. Online survey data was collected from a broader sample, comparing Generation Z and Generation Y. It was discovered that both generations have similar behaviors in which user interface components influence content choice. The research also revealed trends in which components are important to Generation Z and why. This research is the first step to making informed and data-driven decisions in the design and implementation of OTT TV platforms for Generation Z, thus lessening cognitive overload and creating optimal user experiences.

Abstract:
The concern with the following arguments started during a study of national and international cinemas, from the desire to account for a cinema that internationally was doing well, but was undervalued domestically. The aims were to account for the renewal of Italian filmmaking from 1988, the New Italian cinema, and understand the conditions behind this renewal. The thesis identifies in the historical theme and in the recurrence of features from Italian cinema history elements of coherence with previous cinema production. The first consideration that emerges is that a triangulation between a new generation of filmmakers, their audience and recent history shaped the recovery of Italian cinema from 1988. A second consideration is that no discussion of Italian cinema can be separated from a discussion of that which it represents: Italian society and politics. This representation has not only addressed questions of identity for a cohort of spectators, but on occasions has captured the attention of the international audience. Thus the thesis follows a methodologic approach that positions texts in relation to certain traditions in Italian filmmaking and to the context by taking into consideration also industrial factors and social and historical changes. By drawing upon a range of disciplines, from political history to socio-psychological studies, the thesis has focussed on representation of history and memory in two periods of Italian film history: the first and the last decade of twentieth century. The concern has been not so much to interpret the films, but to understand the processes that made the films and how spectarors have applied their knowledge structures to make meaning of the films. Thus the thesis abstains from ascribing implicit meanings to films, but acknowledges how films project cultural contingencies. This is beacause film is shaped by production conditions and cultural and historical circumstances that make the film intelligible. As Bordwell stated in Making Meaning, "One can do other things with films besides 'reading' them" (1989, p. xiii). Within this framework, the thesis proposes a project that understands history films with the norms that govern Italian filmic output, those norms that regulate conditions of production and consumption and the relation between films from various traditions.

It set out to develop a novel type of new media artistic praxis built upon concepts drawn from the disciplines of scientific and cultural ecology. The rationale for this research was based upon my observation as a practising new media artist that existing praxis in the new media domain appeared to operate largely without awareness of the ecological implications of those practices. The thesis begins by explaining key concepts of ecology, spanning the arts and the sciences. It then outlines the thinking of contemporary theorists who propose that the problem of ecology is a critical issue for the 21st century, suggesting that our well-documented ecological crisis is indicative of a more general crisis of human subjectivity. It then records an investigation into particular strategies for artistic praxis which might instigate an active engagement with this problem of ecology. The study employed a methodology based in action research to focus upon the development and analysis of three new artistic works, '#14', 'Public Relations' and 'transit_lounge'. These were used to explore diverse theories of ecology and to hone a series of pointers towards Ecosophical arts/new media praxis. This journey constitutes an emergent theory for new media space design. The thesis concludes with a toolkit of tactics and approaches that other arts/new media practitioners might employ to begin working on the problem of ecology.

Abstract:
The great evolution in the telecommunication systems related to the transmission of multimidia contents in the data communication networks and TV transmission, demands management solutions in which regards quality of end-to-end services. Taking this scenario into consideration, it is proposed in this work the definition and implementation of a solution to monitor media transmition that can be applied to heterogeneous network architectures. The feature of such networks is to integrate different data communication network technologies and telecommunication, involving legacy and modern networks, standarized and proprietary. This work presents a monitoring system for digital TV transmission in heterogeneous converging environments, that is, networks that use different technologies and transmission means for the Digital TV application. Therefore, key aspects for monitoring the digital TV flow in this kind of network are pointed out, as well as an analysis of the communication among the environment subsystems. The monitoring system has a defined architecture, based on the RTP Real-time Transport Protocol, to support the media transmission, such as audio and video, in heterogeneous networks. In order to validate this architecture, a prototype was implemented, as concept evidence, that obtains data from the management information base (MIB) RTP. The results generated by the prototype consolidate information related to the delay variation (jitter) in a management web interface through monitors distributed around the network.

Abstract:
Will community television one day be lamented in the same way as the Glenn Valley Bridge Club in Pennsylvania, where no one remains 'who can tell us precisely when or why the group broke up' (Putnam, 2000: 15)? Robert Putnam's bestseller Bowling Alone proposed that people 'need to reconnect with one another' and rebuild their communities for the good of society. Although he may not have succeeded in instigating a revival of lawn bowls and bridge, Putnam did spark a debate about the meaning of "community" today and its role in bringing about positive social change. At a time when the communications landscape is set to transform with the introduction of digital broadcasting technology, this thesis looks at the status of community broadcasting and its role within civil society. Taking Australia's community television sector as its starting point, it aims to define the pressures, public philosophies and policy decisions that make community broadcasting what it is. This thesis is structured thematically and geographically. The introductory chapters establish the research question in relation to Australia's community broadcasting sector. As well as tracing the intellectual path of community media studies, it sets out to locate community broadcasting within broader intellectual debates around notions of community, governance and the media. These are brought back to the "on-the-ground" reality throughout the thesis by means of policy analysis, interviews and anecdotal evidence. Chapters Three to Five map out the themes of access, the public interest and development by reference to community broadcasting in different regions. In North America I explore notions of free speech and first-come-first served models of access. In Europe, notions of "quality", public service broadcasting and the difficult relationship that community broadcasting has with public interest values. Through the Third World and the Third Way I examine how community broadcasting is implicated within development discourse and ideas of social change. The final chapter of the thesis moves into the virtual region of the Internet, looking at changing notions of access and the relevance of new communications rationales to the community broadcasting project. At the intersection of the various themes and models discussed throughout the thesis exists a strong rationale for the future of community broadcasting. Although new technologies may be interpreted as the beginning of the end of community broadcasting, I have argued that in fact it is an idea whose time has come.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the uses of educational audiovisual by teachers. It falls within the theoretical framework of the sociology of uses, however, the research object at the heart of this work is at the intersection of audiovisual and educational issues. Therefore, it aims to develop a communicationnal approach of educational tools and media, as defined by Pierre Moeglin (2005). The first stage of this work tries to highlight the elements that configure the use, regarding the side of actors. First, we propose an archeology of educational audiovisual, then, we return to the current offer in terms of educational audiovisual and specifically on the content proposed by the first digital educational video on demand for teachers, lesite.tv. The second phase focuses more on the uses itself. After studying the use of lesite.tv, using quantitative data, we see how far the representations of designers are part of the user configuration uses. These are analyzed through the speeches of users and non-users teachers, within a series of comprehensive interviews. The realization of som user’s portraits and cross-sectional analysis of the interviews, allows to evaluate the "negotiated renunciations" that occur within the class, regarding to the professional identity of teachers, refering to public and private spheres and, finally, facing the so called "digital conversion". Overall, this research questions the tension that the use of educational audiovisual established between educational and media logics. It carries as such issues related to the industrialization of education ; and towards audiovisual, transmedia prospects

Abstract:
Indonesian broadcasters are less than enthused about switching from an analog signal to digital terrestrial television (DTT). The nation’s telecommunications industry appears mostly indifferent, consumers are reluctant to spend money on the necessary new equipment, and electronics producers are pessimistic about the new market. Despite the fact that few stakeholders are in support of this transition, the Indonesian government is moving forward on DTT. Why could this be? Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, with more than 16,000 islands and a diverse geography that complicates the implementation of new broadcast and telecommunications infrastructure. By taking it as a case study, this project explains why, despite broad national ambivalence, high costs, and uncertain benefits, a developing country might still find itself accepting an externally imposed standard. Primary research questions include: What incentivizes nations to accept new technological standards when domestic enthusiasm is sparse? How do foreign interests and a fear of isolation from an “inevitable” global technofuture reshape civic priorities? Which segments of society are legitimized in this process, and which are ignored? The processes at play are nuanced. Building on the scholarship of Grewal (2008), this dissertation contends that Indonesia’s decision to transition to DTT is understood as neither entirely voluntary nor entirely coerced. Rather, it is the result of a complex web of power plays and rhetorical frames. International bodies seek to impose a universal broadcast standard even in countries where it is counterproductive as certain domestic corporations attempt to influence the process in order to maintain and consolidate their dominance. At the same time, prevailing narratives of “necessity” and “inevitability” obscure policy choices better suited to the Indonesian situation, and hide the reality that DTT is not only a technological issue, but a social one as well.
