Abstract:
The effect of telematics technology on public transport use is analyzed on the basis of a theoretical model. Two possible mechanisms (reduction of uncertainty and a better choice of bus options, based on a general cost-minimization assumption) that may stimulate bus use are distinguished. The model is empirically tested by using microdata from the Southampton Stopwatch telematics project, which were collected both before and after the introduction of this telematics information service. The estimation of the model leads to interesting findings in explaining (anticipated) increases in bus use, for both the before and the after survey. It is shown that uncertainty reduction is the more important effect of the new system. Differences in the before and after data are found concerning the increase in bus use, but the explanatory model proves consistent over the two samples.

Abstract:
Abstract:The FOMTA (Fundamentals of Modern Telemedicine in Africa) project aims to promote the development of indigenous regional networks between R&D centres and universities of the Developing Countries (DCs) and their European counterparts. While FOMTA prepares the way for the use of broadband technology in Africa, it will also associate the DCs with the generation of knowledge, innovative and appropriate technologies needed to solve some of the specific problems, in order to achieve a sustainable economic development. Designed to eliminate the time-delaying lack of infrastructure, FOMTA will embark on the simulation of the Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure. FOMTA will adopt measures to increase the awareness and stimulate the participation of the DCs in the telemedicine and health care telematics projects through demonstrations, pilot projects, Workshops, training and exchange activities. This will demonstrate the feasibility of telemedicine services in the DCs, including trial of services in real-life circumstances, and will provide training possibilities for researchers in the use of methods and tools for advanced communication technologies and telematics. Undoubtedly, telediagnosis, teleconsultation and other areas of telemedicine would thrive in Africa both as remote testing grounds and fields of practical applications.

Abstract:
The study outlines general trends evident in Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), participants’ perceptions and the promotion of CMC across the curriculum in a South African Secondary School. This case study focuses on the Global Teenager Project (GTP), which started as a bi-national pilot project in April 1999 between secondary schools in South Africa and the Netherlands. The study sets out to investigate how well the GTP can be incorporated into the existing school curriculum through the teacherresearcher’s direct involvement in facilitating the project at a school where she is a fulltime teacher. The main purpose of the study is to review existing literature to establish how collaborative learning could be achieved through a CMC environment between teenagers from various countries based on the research done at an international level and link the practice at this school to the existing international trends. It was found that the GTP has great potential in enhancing collaborative learning within various learning areas at Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary School (NNSS). Despite the usefulness of the GTP and the overwhelming enthusiasm learners displayed, its success at NNSS depended on the motivation of teachers and how easily the activities of the GTP could be incorporated within day-to-day teachers’ activities.

Berge, Mari S. "Challenges and possibilities in telecare : realist evaluation of a Norwegian telecare project." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/26094.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports from a telecare evaluation in a Norwegian municipality (2012-2016). The project was established to provide domestic results from a hitherto new field in the country to underpin future policy. This evaluation includes pre- and post-implementation data collection, which has been scarce in telecare. The methodological approach was realist evaluation that seeks to explore how telecare works, for whom, why and in which circumstances – or why it does not work. The research aimed to explore the hypothesis elicited from national policy documents: ‘If telecare is used, then people are enabled to remain safe in their own home for longer’. Various methods were used to gather data from multiple stakeholders as they have different knowledge about how the implementation developed. The methods in this evaluation included literature reviews, observations, and sequential interviews with users and relatives in addition to sequential focus groups with frontline staff. Realist evaluation was particularly suitable in demonstrating how and why telecare is useful to some users but not to others. Telecare had to match users’ abilities and needs for them to benefit from it. Telecare operates in a dynamic context, and therefore requires adjustment according to the user’s current situation, taking into account changes as they occur. This appears to have been often underestimated. Telecare holds a different position from other devices and technologies in people’s everyday life, which also needs to be acknowledged. Correct assessment is significant for users to obtain the intended effect from telecare. When telecare is correctly adjusted to users, it increases safety, which is essential for enabling older people to remain living at home. Several challenges in establishing telecare projects are identified and alternative ways to understand multi-disciplinary partnerships are suggested. By using realist evaluation the findings are nuanced and point to elements that are significant for achieving the intended outcomes.

Abstract:
Computer mediated communication (CMC) fundamentally influences the function of communication. It influences the organization's management and administration, but it most affects the dynamics of middle and lower level employees. The most simplistic model is that of an electronic office in which its employees need to know and understand the role of CMC. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance and satisfaction of co-workers who use CMC to communicate within their organization, and to check employees' performance when using CMC.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis provides an introduction to the field of Multimedia Distribution Networks (MDN) and is written as the first part the Aeetes Project. It compares potential MDN architectures and technologies, and makes a proposal for a suitable IMDN architecture based on it. The thesis defines the concepts of MDN and IMDN, and describes the current state of the art of MDN technologies and implementations. An Internet-based Multimedia Distribution Network (IMDN) is a type of overlay network, comprised of a cluster of servers on the Internet which is used to distribute multimedia content to end-users in a cost-efficient manner with better quality of service compared to regular distribution models. It also makes a comparison of the technology and performance of various existing MDN architectures with focus on their advantages and limitations. Based on this comparison the possible architectures are evaluated and a proposal is made for an Aeetes implementation candidate. The suggested architecture is focused on low cost and simple deployment, and is designed to be used in both academic and commercial settings. It also attempts to be extensible and to allow for simple modifications as it might become the base system upon which a range of further work in the field of Multimedia Distribution Networks is built.

Nordbryhn, Ola. "Automated Calibration of Multi-Projector Arrays." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Telematics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-9005.

Full text
Abstract:

Setting up large multi-projector arrays today usually come at a cost; manual calibration of each projector requires time. The orientation of the image from each projector must be correctly aligned in six axes to make the final projected output fit the screen. Not all aspects of calibrating projectors are possible to correct, consumer hardware usually only covers two or three of the axes, the remainder are often corrected using clever projector placement. Also, the degree of which it is possible to adjust is also limited, decreasing placement flexibility. As the collaboration surfaces in Hems lab requires a large number of projectors to work seamlessly together, good calibration techniques are required in order to keep setup and maintenance time low, while giving highly accurate calibration results. Abstract By creating a software demonstrator that automates much of the calibration and enables quick and easy setup, I have made possible rapid prototyping, testing and demonstration of multi-projector arrays, both with single and stereoscopic views. As I will prove, this software shows a flexible approach that may be of use, not only to the Caruso lab and future Hems lab, but may also be used in other settings where projector technology up to this date still has not been widely used, by overcoming the calibration and image warping hurdles and limitations. Abstract The software is developed with basis in the OpenCV computer vision library, and implemented in Python. Tests show that calibration time for a single projector may be cut down to a matter of seconds, regardless of the placement of the projector in relation to the screen, whereas traditional calibration often still not reach the same level of accuracy even if taking tens of minutes or require repositioning of the projector to compensate for the lack of adjustment possibilities.

Abstract:
Many industries are today facing the possibilities and challenges arising with an increasingly digitalised world. One such is the scantily studied industry of earth-moving contractors that today stands in front of an increasing amount of digital technologies, which may have the possibility to assist firms in their earthwork operations. However, there are indications that many firms tend to experience difficulties to beneficially adopt or see the potential of utilising these digital technologies. Hence, many firms tend to undertake an adoption approach that is associated with high client dependency and a less beneficial unsustainable subordinated position within the industry’s value chain. The purpose of this study has thus been to explore how the technological, organisational and external elements affect earth-moving contractors’ opportunity to adopt and utilise digital technologies in their operations. Moreover, the study has aimed to contribute with the understanding and knowledge of how the adoption of digital technology can be used to strengthen Swedish contractors’ position in the earth-moving industry’s value chain and in the end, aid the country’s sociotechnical development. The findings of the study are based on an explorative multiple case study approach and extensive review of literature. The results suggest that the extent to which adoption and utilisation of digital technologies differs among different earth-moving firms. Three of the five studied companies are considered as digital forerunners which have been able to leverage digital technologies to increase efficiency in their operations. In the case of two of these firms, the adoption of digital technology has enabled them to transform their whole businesses and partake in an increased and more beneficial role within the value chain. Further, the analysis of the findings indicates that the difference in adoption is affected by several factors related to a continuous interaction between (1) the internal aspects of the organisations, (2) the external context of the firms and (3) if the technical features of the digital technologies are perceived as compatible and beneficial for, the current business process and strategy. The thesis contributes to academia with explorative findings within a scarcely studied industry in general and, regarding digital technology adoption in particular. Additionally, the study provides examples of the previously unrecognised industry-dynamic phenomena of value chain integration by earth-moving contractors. These findings could have implications for the whole construction sector in Sweden. Lastly, the study exemplifies opportunities and barriers crucial for the adoption and implementation of digital technologies within smaller project-based organisations.

Abstract:
This research aims to contribute to the development of relations between body and technology, as understanding this dialogue as perception changing system. From the physical experience of connection with devices that allow the transgression of the natural organism, I discuss, with this dissertation, what I\'ve been calling the \"coupling\" concept. A sort of body extension that does not invalidate the natural body, but instead works mutually to form a new body that proposes different perspectives. In my understanding, \"coupling\" is in consonance to what I call \"poetics of risk,\" in which I see the line before the void, the exit point; not as an abyss, but as an unknown space that allows me to get out of the comfort zone to achieve the power of the system in which I find myself in. By presenting some work done in recent years, I want to grope for notions of body, technology, presence, orthotics and prosthesis that indicate the principles for what I\'ve been calling so far as \"coupling\". The works that will be discussed are: \"adaMachine Experiment # 1 Presence Creator Machine\", a telematic performance that investigates the possibilities of presence, technologies and affections through mediated, noisy and limited communication; \"La Grand Pelea\" investigates biophysical sensors seeking to cross the border of the skin by creating wearables, able to enhance the relationship between technology and the body that wears it, proposing interfaces for assistive purposes and performative art experiments; and \"Monomyth\", wearable performative object, in which the dimensions of technology and body occupy the same place of importance, deals with the human journey that is modified by establishing peculiar relations provoked by the apparatus and the performer. I conclude this dissertation with a report about Hibrida Project, which promoted technical, theoretical and sensitive connections that show us the power of acting collectively in contemporary times. The implications of this project revealed that it went beyond the concepts of art and the academic laboratory, as its participants experienced the culture of sharing and prototyping, and were able to present aesthetic issues that emerge from these sensitive propositions, offering social empowerment tools.

Abstract:
The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) defines the competences for professional practice of a Telecommunications Engineer. The School of Telecommunication Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia, Spain) provides an integrated education program consisting of a Graduate (GITST) + Master (MUIT). The GITST course offers four specialization tracks: Electronics, Telematics, Communication Systems and Multimedia for the proper acquisition of knowledge and competences of the future Telecommunications Engineers. In 2018, the graduate program has implemented a structural change in the organization of subjects for reinforcing important skills, in which a course on digital electronics design and verification (Integration of Digital Systems, ISDIGI) has been transformed into a core subject of the study plan. In this paper, we describe the methodology and adaptation of ISDIGI (i.e. a project-based learning intermediate HDL course that includes design and verification abilities) to the new GITST Curriculum. In addition, this paper describes the process of moving from specialized to core subject.
