Abstract:
It was known for a long time that OpenStack has issues with scalability. Peer-to-Peer systems, on the other hand, have proven to scale well without significant reduction of performance. The objectives of this thesis are to study the challenges associated with P2P-enhanced clouds and present solutions for overcoming them. As a case study, we take the architecture of the P2P-enhanced OpenStack implemented at Ericsson that uses the CYCLON P2Pprotocol. We study the OpenStack architecture and P2P technologies and finally propose solutions and provide possibilities in addressing the challenges that are faced by P2P-enhanced OpenStack clouds. We emphasize mainly on a decentralized identity service and management of Virtual machine images. This work also investigates the characterization of P2P architectures for their use in P2P-enhanced OpenStack clouds. The results section shows that the proposed solution enables the existing P2P system to scale beyond what was originally possible. We also show that the P2P-enhanced system performs better than the standard OpenStack.

Abstract:
This work contributes to knowledge in the field of semiconductor system architectures, circuit design and implementation, and communications protocols. The work starts by describing the challenges of interfacing legacy analogue subscriber loops to an electronic circuit contained within the Central Office (Telephone Exchange) building. It then moves on to describe the globalisation of the telecom network, the demand for software programmable devices to enable system customisation cost effectively, and the creation of circuit and system blocks to realise this. The work culminates in the application challenges of developing a wireless RF front end, including antenna, for an Ultra Wideband communications systems applications. This thesis illustrates how higher levels of integration over the period of 1981 to 2010 have influenced the realisation of complex system level products, particularly analogue signal processing capabilities for communications applications. There have been many publications illustrating the impact of technology advancement from an economic or technology perspective. The thesis shows how technology advancement has impacted the physical realisation of semiconductor products over the period, at system, circuit, and physical implementation levels.

The research focuses on the acceptance of new technologies within the telecommunications industry. The study examines three models namely Innovation theory, Theory of Reason Action (TRA), and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This study explores the technology acceptance models in order to explain why certain monitoring officers at ICASA would prefer specific technologies over others. Models of interest could be the innovation theory, TRA and TAM. After reviewing both models, the author will examine the TAM in detail as a model of interest in this study. In turn, this model is expected to assist us to understand why monitoring officer's at ICASA would prefer a particular frequency monitoring technology over the other.

Abstract:
Renewable energy sources have started to substitute traditional energy sources in power sector, heating/cooling sector, and transportation sector. This paper explores the potential of renewable energy (mainly solar and wind) in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) industry. The focus is on mobile telecommunication infrastructure segment, since it is a prime consumer of energy within the ICT industry. Moving towards solar or wind power sources might bring a major shift in the ICT industry – both on the technological level as well as the service provisioning level. An overview of innovative technological solutions for solar/wind powered telecom networks is provided with a discussion on technological feasibility of innovative standalone solar/wind powered base stations. The market value of these innovative solutions as well as potential power savings are estimated in the total addressable market, the potential market, and the real market. The industry attractiveness of the innovation solutions is assessed using the Porter’s five forces and SWOT frameworks. Furthermore, these innovative solutions are assessed for their potential diffusion likelihood in different scenarios. There are several potential driving forces for the transformation towards solar/wind powered telecom networks. Based on the most important driving forces, plausible scenarios of the future have been identified and analyzed. It is identified that the renewable energy driven transformation in the ICT industry can affect developments in other industries such as automotive, agriculture, healthcare, and transportation industries.

Abstract:
IoT has become tremendously popular. It provides information access, processing and connectivity for a huge number of devices or sensors. IoT systems, however, often do not process the information locally, rather send the information to remote locations in the Cloud. As a result, it adds huge amount of data traffic to the network and additional delay to data processing. The later feature might have significant impact on applications that require fast response times, such as sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) applications including Augmented reality, face recognition, and object detection. Consequently, edge computing paradigm that enables computation of data near the source has gained a significant importance in achieving a fast response time in the recent years. IoT devices can be employed to provide computational resources at the edge of the network near the sensors and actuators. The aim of this thesis work is to design and implement a kind of edge computing concept that brings AI models to a small embedded IoT device by the use of virtualization concepts. The use of virtualization technology enables the easy packing and shipping of applications to different hardware platforms. Additionally, this enable the mobility of AI models between edge devices and the Cloud. We will implement an AI model inside a Docker container, which will be deployed on a FireflyRK3399 single-board computer (SBC). Furthermore, we will conduct CPU and memory performance evaluations of Docker on Firefly-RK3399. The methodology adopted to reach to our goal is experimental research. First, different literatures have been studied to demonstrate by implementation the feasibility of our concept. Then we setup an experiment that covers measurement of performance metrics by applying synthetic load in multiple scenarios. Results are validated by repeating the experiment and statistical analysis. Results of this study shows that, an AI model can successfully be deployed and executed inside a Docker container on Arm-Cortex-based single-board computer. A Docker image of OpenFace face recognition model is built for ARM architecture of the Firefly SBC. On the other hand, the performance evaluation reveals that the performance overhead of Docker in terms of CPU and Memory is negligible. The research work comprises the mechanisms how AI application can be containerized in ARM architecture. We conclude that the methods can be applied to containerize software application in ARM based IoT devices. Furthermore, the insignificant overhead brought by Docker facilitates for deployment of applications inside a container with less performance overhead. The functionality of IoT device i.e. Firefly-RK3399 is exploited in this thesis. It is shown that the device is capable and powerful and gives an insight for further studies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In vandag se besigheidswêreld bestaan twee teenoorgestelde pole.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In today’s world of business two opposite poles exist. On the one end is the world’s developed economy that has become saturated to such an extent that double digit growth has become a scarcity. However despite this fact continuous pressure is being placed on managers to grow their companies at a rate that will ensure an increase in shareholder value. On the other end are two thirds of the world’s population (4 billion people), the base of the economic pyramid (BOP) that is desperately poor and underserved in terms of basic needs, let alone luxury items. Double digit growth is achievable in these markets with the only competition being non-consumption in many cases. This research looks at how these two poles can be integrated into a mutually beneficial relationship. Companies could ensure sustaining levels of growth if there is an equal focus on sustainable as well as disruptive innovations. The case made in this research report is that companies cannot afford to focus on sustainable innovations alone, but need to invest in disruptive innovations as well. The innovation theories hold that the best place to test and develop disruptive innovations is in emerging markets. However too many multinational corporations (MNCs) have failed to access the illusive mass markets within emerging economies. It seems that their strategies were focussed on the developed segments within those emerging markets and not on the masses that constitute the BOP. Developing technologies for the BOP requires a local strategy and, amongst other things, a quantum leap in the price-performance ratio - in many cases a typical reduction in price by a factor of ten. The possibility then exists to take these solutions back to disrupt developed markets. There is a human aspect to this scenario as well. Poverty has indirectly been a cause of millions of people dying in Africa every year and many survivors live in poor conditions without basic services and being exploited by few informal businesses. The BOP offers an opportunity for the developed economies, not only to make a lot of money, but also to innovate their products and business models to empower poor people to start earning and generating income. This will in many ways help them to rise from poverty. It seems that growing business and generating wealth might be the most efficient vehicle to help lift the BOP from poverty. However, the BOP needs MNCs to bring their power and knowledge to these markets to ensure that it is done responsibly and in a sustainable manner.

Abstract:
The business environment at the end of the 20th century requires that corporations should efficiently manage their information ressources, to wich purpose new information technologies (nit : informatics and telecommunications) can be a great help. However, it is not the present business environment justifies the importance of information ressources, we may add further reason, of genial and technological character. From a general point of view, it may be said that the importance of information within the firms is but me reflection on such social organizations of something that is changing at a global level, wich is said to be entering a new order that has been termed as postindustrial society, or information society amongst other definitions. Nevertheless, in the information society, changes in organizations caused by the introduction of new information technologies are inevitable as organizations are compelled by external environment to be efficient and competitive in order to survive. On a technological level, the progress and generalization of the so-called new information technologies have also played a major role in conferring information ressources me strategic character they possess within organizations. Once mis has been said, one of the purpose of our work is to present our hypothesis that the role to be played by new information technologies within thes organizations should consist on puttin the power of these technologies at the service of an efficient management of information ressources, thus opening a way to have at our disposal the quality in information as required by any firm deserving to be described as adpatable, quick responding, aware of the threats and opportunities of an increasingly internationalized environment, and willing to cater for any present and potential needs of its customers. Come to this point, we would like to to state that another of the purpose of this paper is to show that traditional organizational structures are dissolving and new forms of organizations are emerging. We have tried to outline the organizational changes that the introduction of new information technologies might involve. The main question pointed in our work is wich we might group under the name of +the relationships between nit and organizational structures ;. At this stage, our main hypothesis is + does the growth of nit contribute to the emergence of

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of the proposed research is to present a compact system-on-package (SOP)-based passive front-end solution for millimeter-wave wireless communication/sensor applications, that consists of fully integrated three dimensional (3D) cavity filters/duplexers and antenna. The presented concept is applied to the design, fabrication and testing of V-band transceiver front-end modules using multilayer low temperature co-fired (LTCC) technology. The millimeter-wave front-end module is the foundation of 60 GHz (V-band) wireless systems for short-range multimedia applications, such as high-speed internet access, video streaming and content download. Its integration poses stringent challenges in terms of high performance, large number of embedded passive components, low power consumption, low interference between integrated components and compactness. To overcome these major challenges, a high level of integration of embedded passive functions using low-cost and high-performance materials that can be laminated in 3D, such as the multilayer LTCC, is significantly critical in the module-level design. In this work, various compact and high-performance passive building blocks have been developed in both microstrip and cavity configurations and their integration, enabling a complete passives integration solution for 3D low-cost wireless millimeter-wave front-end modules. It is worthy to note that most of the designs implemented comes away with novel ideas and is presented as the first extensive state-of-art components, entirely validated by measured data at 60 GHz bands.

Abstract:
Context. Internet of Things (IoT) is an extension of the Internet, which now includes physical objects of the real world. The main purpose of Internet of Things is to increase a quality of people’s daily life. A smart home is one of the promising areas in the Internet of Things which increases rapidly. It allows users to control their home devices anytime from any location in the world using Internet connectivity and automate their work based on the physical environment conditions and user preferences. The main issues in deploying the architecture of IoT are the security of the communication between constrained low-power devices in the home network and device performance. Battery lifetime is a key QoS parameter of a battery-powered IoT device which limits the level of security and affects the performance of the communication. These issues have been deepened with the spread of cheap and easy to use microcontrollers which are used by electronic enthusiasts to build their own home automation projects. Objectives. In this study, we investigated wireless communication technologies used in low-power and low-bandwidth home area networks to determine which of them are most suitable for smart home applications. We also investigated the correlation between security, power consumption of constrained IoT device, and performance of wireless communication based on a model of a home automation system with a sensor node. Sensor node was implemented using Arduino Nano microcontroller and RF 433 MHz wireless communication module. Methods. To achieve the stated objectives of this research following methods were chosen: literature review to define common applications and communication technologies used in a smart home scenario and their requirements, comparison of wireless communication technologies in smart home, study of Arduino microcontroller technology, design and simulation of a part of  home automation project based on Arduino, experimental measurements  of execution time and power consumption of Arduino microcontroller with RF 433 MHz wireless module when transmitting data with different levels of security, and analysis of experimental results. Results. In this research, we presented a detailed comparison of ZigBee, WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and ANT communication technologies used in a smart home in terms of the main characteristics. Furthermore, we considered performance, power consumption, and security. A model of a home automation system with a sensor node based on Arduino Nano was described with sleep management and performance evaluation. The results show that the battery lifetime of Arduino in a battery-powered sensor node scenario is determined by the communication speed, sleep management, and affected by encryption. Conclusions. The advanced communication strategy can be used to minimize the power consumption of the device and increase the efficiency of the communication. In that case, our security measures will reduce the productivity and lifetime of the sensor node not significantly. It’s also possible to use symmetric encryption with smaller block size.

In the late two decades, the telecommunications sector passed through great transformations. On the one hand, the advent of the microelectronics base has provoked a technological revolution in the telecommunications industry, which resulted in new services, new transmission and switching equipment and the convergence with others segments of the electronic complex. On the other hand, a set of institutional and regulatory changes introduced in some developed countries, has brought important modifications in the organization of the sector all over the world. At the same time, with the increasing internationalization and integration processes between national economies (the well known globalization process), the telecommunications sector became the essential infrastructure for the participation of citizens, firms, regions and countries in the new international environment. The telecommunications industry is changing due to regulatory reasons and for emerging technologies that transformed the industry framework. Regulatory changes facilitate the privatization wave that happened in the end of the 1990 s, fostering competition in the sector. The technology convergence of telephony, information technology, television and internet, creates a new paradigm for this market. The market reconfiguration leads to acquisitions and mergers, motivated by the economy of scale necessary to bare the high fixed costs of technological infrastructure.

Since the 1980s the new technologies of information and communication have completely changed the telecommunications, media and computing sectors' performance. The purpose of this study is to explore how this change was brought about in the United Kingdom in order to ease the transformation of British society into an information society. This study includes a detailed survey of the reforms of the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors iniated by Margaret thatcher's government and by those which followed, as well as an analysis of how these reforms were implemented. The restructuring of the telecommunications and broadcasting markets required new regulation modes which are also given proper attention. The final section of this study assesses on the basis of concrete examples the extent to which British society has actually become a mature information society

Abstract:
It is not difficult to understand that telecommunication technology can provide comfort as well as improve the quality of our everyday life. What isn’t so evident is the environmental impact of such development. While telecommunication technologies are still seen as clean technologies, they can have some harmful impacts on the environment, many of them have been identified and protected in national and international laws and standards, and others are still under investigation. On the other hand, it’s undoubtedly the importance of this technology for modern stile of life. It’s difficult to imagine life today without it. The aim of this Master s thesis is to present and analyze the impacts of the main forms of telecommunications systems on the people’ life on Earth, such as effects of pollution of space, soil and air, impact on visual landscape of cities and the use of technology in projects with ecological purposes. The main objective is to present the positive and negative impacts on the environment caused by the new telecommunications technologies. This work could serve as a warning to entities involved in the process and assist in decision making in the fields of engineering and standards, to give greater environmental sustainability to the existing and future telecommunication systems.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of mobile telephony in rural communities in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is a threshold study which reports on research conducted in the earliest stages of mobile phone adoption in these areas. It explores the ways in which this new technology changes people’s lives, social structures and relationships. The research focuses on non-urban communities, which previously had little or no access to modern communication technologies, but which are in some cases still using traditional forms of communication such as drums. It has found that the introduction of mobile telecommunications has generally been viewed positively, although several negative concerns have been strongly felt. Specific benefits related to enhanced communication with relatives and friends living away from home villages, and use of the technology in time-critical emergencies or crises. Difficulties have arisen with respect to the cost of owning and operating a handset, as well as financial and logistical challenges when recharging handset batteries, particularly in areas with no mains electricity supply. Perceived damaging effects of mobile phone access related to sex, crime and pornography. The changes taking place are described through a social lens, by foregrounding the perceptions of villagers. The perspectives of key informants, such as telecommunication company managers, are also discussed. Employing the technique of triangulation (using different methods and sources) has helped to validate the findings of the research project. The sources constantly overlap and agree on the main themes, such as those outlined above. PNG is a developing country which performs poorly on a wide range of development indicators. A large majority of the people live outside of the major towns and cities. It is therefore worthwhile investigating the introduction of mobile phone technology in rural areas. These areas often have poor access to services, including transport, health, education and banking. Until 2007, communities in such regions fell outside of mobile phone coverage areas. In the case of all ten villages discussed in this thesis, there has never been any landline telephone infrastructure available. Therefore, this research on mobile phones is in effect documenting the first ever access to any kind of phone in these communities. This research makes a unique contribution to knowledge about the role of communication in PNG, and has implications for policy, practice and theory. In the policy arena, the thesis aids understanding of the impact which communication sector competition and regulation can have on rural and relatively isolated communities. There are three practical problems which have emerged from the research: cost, battery recharging difficulties and breakage are all major obstacles to uptake and use of mobile telephony in rural communities. Efforts to reduce usage costs, enable easier recharging, and design more robust handsets would allow for increased utilisation of mobile phones for a range of purposes. With respect to the realm of theory, this research sits amongst the most recent scholarship in the mobile phone field, located within the broader communication theory area. It recommends cautionary reading of any literature which suggests that mobile phones will reduce poverty and increase incomes in poor, rural communities in developing countries. Nonetheless, the present research adds weight to mobile phone studies which suggest that the primary advantages of mobile phones in such settings are for the satisfactions of communication of itself, and for social interaction among loved ones.

Abstract:
This is a study of the effectiveness of telecommunication and computer technologies when used as part of a modified distance education course. Using Salomon's communication theory, and Csikszentmihalyi's and Krugman's involvement theories the study examines the degree to which these technologies can replicate classroom learning. Relevant empirical studies in communication technologies and distance education are also examined. The study focussed on two small groups of secondary school students whose classes were linked using telecommunications and computer technologies to deliver a distance education course. Neither teacher nor students were provided with training in distance education methodology. The teacher adapted classroom materials already in use rather than use structured course materials normally available for distance education courses. Even though the schools in the study were forty-two kilometres apart the study found that conditions did exist which supported involvement. The study also found that involvement conditions were fragile and related to the capacity of the technology to maintain high quality telecommunications links. Control of technology was an important factor in developing students' perception of success and their degree of involvement in the course. It was also evident that telecommunications technology could replicate many of the classroom learning conditions such as exist when teacher and students are both present at the same location. Teacher-student and student-student relationship were found to be more productive if there had been a face-to-face meeting of the participants before the course commenced. It was also evident that this method of study encouraged both independent learning on the part of individual students as well as developing their co-operative learning skills.

Nowadays, organizations, adopts relationships as one of the main ways of differentiation, being the CRM (Customer Relationship Management) the strategy used for searching reliable relationships with clients. Telecommunications sector has suffered from major alterations and has been marked by a considerable number of fusions and alliances of enterprises, strategic partnerships, introduction of new actors and asymmetric regulation. This work reflects upon an elaboration of an information architecture, taking into consideration the Information Systems and the CRM of two great Portuguese telecommunications companies, in their convergence/integration process. Also the framework eTOM is analyzed, and its practical contributions for the telecommunications operators, checked. To reach the claimed goals, a unique case study was performed and the three CRM pillars were studied; people, processes and technologies. Data was collected from interviews, direct observation and documental analyses. In this case, top management, company culture and fear/resistance to changes are the principal factors conditioning the development and application of successful CRM systems, which depends mostly upon people, the key element of any enterprise. Technologies and processes are also important, but without worker involvement, do not assure successful use and adoption of IS/IT (Information Systems/Information Technologies). On the other hand, eTOM framework is an element that eases the relationships among the three pillars of CRM, for telecommunication sector enterprises.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to study the globalisation in the telecommunication business and the way that this globalisation has been affecting the performance in certain countries. The market liberation in the telecommunication business, allowed the entry of new telecom providers and consequently the increase of competency. In the majority of the countries, the global market is already set, but the competitive process is at its start. Although the end users can already see the difference in terms of final cost, new services and functionalities. The developing and the wide spreading of the new communication and information technologies assumed the responsibility for a deep change in the society. This change is visible in all different parties, either in the way to commercialise, to learn, to be entertained or also at work. The most common visible feature in these alterations that society is going trough is the developing and the massification of Internet. It hasn't changed only the way to communicate, but also the way to negotiate. Mentioning the E-Commerce, as a new way to reduce costs, to get closer to the consumers and to provide a better service to the end user. The need to communicate and to be informed more and more each day is forcing the society to base its economy in knowledge. This way, the implementation of better infrastructures capable to support the high debit of transmitted data, is a fundamental factor to the developing of the new IT Society. It is also important to analyse the impact that the spread of data and the use of new technologies has in the world population. The effects are not linear. The challenge for now, involves all economical agents. The companies are supposed to modernize and adapt, form their employees. The governments are supposed regulate and promote the developing in a symmetrical but also affordable way. At last the end user has the proactive roll in the search of new information and services.

Abstract:
In this study, two courses from the McGill Distance Education program with very different learning goals were examined to investigate the instructional role of two communication technologies (i.e., fax and e-mail) in distance education. The data set included verbatim e-mail and fax transcripts, instructor interviews, course syllabi and course assignments. Triangulation procedures were followed to examine the following within the context of two distance education courses with very different learning goals: (1) the general instructional purposes for which the technologies were used; (2) the levels of learning reflected in the mediated interactions; and (3) the relationship between the use of the technology, the instructors' perceptions of its use and the stated learning outcomes of the courses.
Electronic-mail provided the interaction necessary for encouraging discussions of course content in the Instructional Design course, whereas fax was used more for the transmission of knowledge in both courses. An examination of the relationship between course learning objectives, course transcripts, and instructor interviews indicated that the instructors were consistent in their view of the different communication technologies,. their purpose for using the chosen technology, and the way in which they used the specific communication technology. However, this consistency was not reflected in the students' use of the communication technologies since the students responded only at Bloom's lower levels of learning even though the instructors used all levels of learning.
The Information Technologies and Telecommunications (ITT) are one of the engines in the change of the techno-economic paradigm, drew since the beginning of the eighties, in the extent they facilitate the information access and knowledge creation processes and they have a diffusive character under the social and economic activities. In a increasingly global economy, vvhere the geographical distances decreases and the human and capital resources flovvs more freely, the innovation comes-up as the main competitive advantage source since it allows lovver costs or differentiated production. The social and economic development depends increasingly in the existence of endogenous capabilities in science & technology and qualified human resources. Under a Neo-Schumpeterian technological change theoretical analysis, this work searchs to identify and characterise the challenges placed to the developing countries in the «Information Society» transition, as far as the current techno-economic revolution creates, abreast to an increased exclusion threat, «vvindows of opportunity» which properly taken make possible a «leap» in their developing process. A Mozambique case study is accomplished vvhere the recent social and economic development policy evolution and the ITT relevance to this process consolidation is analysed in an intemational and regional co-operation framework to development.

Abstract:
Our examination of ministerial licensing under the Radio Act, attempts to first show that its use in the early 1980s was driven more by a desire within the Department of Communications to be dominant in setting policy than by necessity. The case studies we then discuss show that the argument advanced at the time of the Department's announcement to license cellular---that there is greater accountability in expanding elected officials' powers in regulatory affairs---fails to prove itself in practice. After careful examination of the two cases in which Ministerial licensing has been used in Canada, this paper points problems with ministerial licensing. First, as our case studies will clearly show, Ministerial licensing is apparently incapable of providing any of the policy leadership or public accountability. Second, and perhaps more important in the long term, Ministerial licensing in telecommunications contravenes all of Canada's own efforts to secure a fair and procedurally defined international regime for telecom regulation. In the first part of this thesis I give an overview of the political-economic and telecommunications sector developments in major western economies, as well as some of the advanced Eastern European countries. I use this framework to analyze the telecommunications sector development in countries of the former Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. Here I address the relevant legal and regulatory landscape development as well as the entrance of the most important business actors in the telecommunications markets of these countries. The history of the telecommunications sector development is also placed in the context of a broader set of political and economic shocks that affected this region of the world after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Throughout the thesis I build on insights learned during the research internship project that I undertook this summer: I visited capitals of all the former Yugoslavian countries and gathered data relevant to the telecommunications sector development by interviewing government and business sector officials there. This information is heavily used for the derivation of a set of policy recommendations and options that government officials should consider for advancing the development of the telecommunications technologies in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Strategies for telecommunications sector development, their barriers, and solutions for surmounting these barriers are presented in the third part of this thesis.

Chowdhury, Arshad M. "Optical Label Switching Technologies for Optical Packet Switched Networks." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14047.

Full text
Abstract:
Optical packet switching (OPS) is the most prominent candidate transport solution that can seamlessly integrate electrical and optical layers by transferring certain switching functionality from electronics to optics, thus alleviating unnecessarily slow and expensive optical-electrical-optical conversions and signal processing at the switching node. Optical Label Switching (OLS) is an important aspect of the optical packet switched network that enables very low-latency forwarding of ultra-high bit-rate, protocol-independent packets entirely in the optical domain. The objective of the proposed research is to develop novel, efficient techniques to realize several key enabling technologies such as optical label generation and encoding, optical label swapping, all-optical buffering, and spectral efficient transmission system for optical label switched based OPS networks. A novel scheme of generating optical label at the ingress node using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique is proposed. This scheme does not suffer from any unavoidable interference, limited extinction ratio or strict synchronization requirements between payload and label as observed by the currently available other label generation methods. One of the primary challenges to realize optical label swapping at the core node of scalable OLS network is the insertion of new optical labels without any wavelength conversion for same wavelength packet routing. A novel mechanism to realize same wavelength packet switching without using any conventional wavelength converter in the OLS network carrying differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulated payload and on-off keying (OOK) modulated optical label is demonstrated. Also a new dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical buffer architecture using optical fiber delay lines that can provide wavelength selective reconfigurable variable delays is proposed. Optical packet switching provides automated, reconfigurable, and faster provision of both wavelength and bandwidth with finer granularity in the optical layer. However, a newer, cost-effective, and spectrally efficient optical transmission technology is essential to support the explosive bandwidth demand expected by the future optical packet switched networks. To meet this challenge, a spectrally efficient solution for transporting 40 Gbps per channel data over 50 GHz spaced DWDM system is developed by exploiting optical carrier suppression and separation technique and optical duobinary modulation.

Abstract:

The growing size of raw data and the lack of internet communication technology to keep up with that growth is introducing unique challenges to academic researchers. This is especially true for those residing in rural areas or countries with sub-par telecommunication infrastructure. In this project I investigate the usefulness of cloud computing technology, data analysis workflow languages and portable computation for institutions that generate data. I introduce the concept of a software solution that could be used to simplify the way that researchers execute their analysis on data sets at remote sources, rather than having to move the data. The scope of this project involved conceptualising and designing a software system to simplify the use of a cloud environment as well as implementing a working prototype of said software for the OpenStack cloud computing platform. I conclude that it is possible to improve the performance of research pipelines by removing the need for researchers to have operating system or cloud computing knowledge and that utilising technologies such as this can ease the burden of moving data.
