Abstract:
This dissertation compares public policy approaches in France, the United Kingdom and the Untied States in relation to convergence between telecommunications and television/video services and puts forward policy recommendations. It starts from the evident changes that convergence is spreading throughout the ICT ecosystem and how it is changing the relationship between telecommunication operators and content providers. The dissertation provides new thinking in a number of areas relating to convergence of telecommunications and television/video services, such as vertical effects, bundling behaviour, network neutrality or the role of OTT video providers. The dissertation aims, on one hand, at formulating very precise recommendation as to how these aspects should be treated in the new convergent environment and, on other hand, at provider a comprehensive view that captures the big picture of the convergence phenomenon. The introductory chapter formulates the research question and sub-questions, why these questions are relevant and the methodology used and Chapter 2 on historical developments describes past and current policy and regulatory frameworks, in relation to competition in telecommunication and television/video services, in the three countriesChapter 3 on vertical effects provides a comparative analysis of competition law and regulatory decision in relation to competition in pay-television/video services. It not only contains merger decisions but also all the relevant regulatory and antitrust decisions between 1996 and 2015. While this chapter also includes to some extent a review of state-of-the-art economic theory on vertical effects, applied to video markets, it aims at identifying the different approaches taken by the authorities in applying economic theory.Chapter 4 addresses bundling of telecommunication and video services, in particular 3-play and 4-play bundles. The first section focuses on customers’ perception of bundled services. This has been modelled through a hedonic price analysis of 3- and 4-play bundles in the three countries. A significant effort has been made to develop more sophisticated quality indicators for this component. The second section focuses on firms’ incentives to sell 3-play communication bundles as a function of their main financial indicators. This section contains a preliminary analysis of operators’ incentives to bundle.Chapter 5 on network neutrality presents the main elements of the network neutrality debate. A standalone chapter on network neutrality is justified based on: i) the global relevance of the network neutrality debate, ii) its importance for the delivery of video services over the Internet and iii) network neutrality’s nature of conceptual link between video and communication services.Chapter 6 examines one of distinctive aspects of convergence of video and telecommunication services: the emergence of online (or over-the-top) video providers which do not come from the traditional television or video industry. This dissertation, as most competition authorities, welcomes the role of OTTs as competition promoters and suggests that the development of these players should be incentivised. The final chapter (Chapter 7) summarises the dissertation’s conclusions and formulates policy recommendations, for countries to consider. These recommendations summarise the content of the rest of the chapters and provide additional details on the legislative and institutional changes that would be needed to implement them

Bae, Kyu-sik. "Work organisation and the restructuring of the telecommunications in British Telecom and Korea Telecom." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/40591/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of thesis is to address the issue of convergence versus divergence in work organisation in the telecommunications industry in Britain and Korea through a comparative case study. Convergence or divergence has been debated among universalists, national institution theorists and converging divergence proponents. These approaches suffer from respectively under-socialisation, over-socialisation, and a lack of dynamic interactions between variables. By focusing on the changing processes of national telecoms governance regimes, management strategies, corporate restructuring, and work organisation, the research explores how global forces are mediated or structured by contextual variables and how variables interact. It investigates three aspects of work organisation, that is, work control, work rationalisation and customisation, and flexibility, of field technicians and customer services representatives in British Telecom and Korea Telecom. The evidence based on interviews, documentation and observations suggests that there are systematic differences in patterns of work organisation between the two cases but small similarities. Even ostensible similarities arise from different contexts and have varying significance. Systematic differences are argued to result not just from varying phases of corporate restructuring between the two cases but also more importantly from such contextual factors as national systems, telecoms governance regimes, the existing management structure, and management and union strategies. However, the relationships between intermediate variables are more interactive and dynamic than conventional institutionalism suggests. Changes in some of the intermediate variables or work reorganisation may be an important source of influence on national institutions, leading to dynamic interactions between variables. These dynamic interactions make the diversification between the two cases distinct from conventional national institution theories which see national institutions as being constant.

Menafra, Valentina Francesca. "Advanced business models for beyond 5G and 6G network architectures." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/23835/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this interdisciplinary work, with roots in business economics and engineering, is to propose a new and innovative business model starting from a description of existing business models enabled by 5G and 6G. The new business model, called the sharing platform business model (SPBM), is based on the concept of sharing economy and multi-sided business model. The SPBM exploits the advantages of a platform, which facilitates the collaboration and cooperation among all the stakeholders in the 5G ecosystem. The ongoing fifth generation of mobile networks has disrupted, in a positive way, the future wireless communication networks; the most significant novelty compared to previous generations is the capability of 5G to serve the requirements of the vertical industries. 5G and the future 6G are able to transform industries and to provide services at gigabit/s speeds, low latency and to open new business opportunities. The mobile ecosystem has completely changed, previous generations were based on voice and data services and business models characterized by a bilateral relationship between operators and their customers, on the other hand, 5G offers the opportunity to collaborate with vertical industries to provide new services for enterprises. Given these premises, there is a clear need for a complete change in business modelling to overcome traditional models and to pave the way for innovative business models, which shall be able to face the business transformation of the mobile ecosystem. One of the main factors responsible for the change in business modelling is the uncertainty regarding the network investors: while in traditional business models the investors were mainly the MNOs, in the new mobile ecosystem this aspect is unclear. The question is: who should invest in the network infrastructure? Probably the solution could be the creation of public-private partnerships but building a business model based on this premise is completely a novel exercise.

Lim, Gavin S. Z. "From strategy, to accounting : accounting practice and strategic discourse in the telecommunications industry." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4013/.

Full text
Abstract:
Following Roberts (1990) and Dent (1990). this study investigates the importance of complexifying the relationship between strategy and accounting. The genealogical approach of Hoskin et al (1997) provides inspiration as to the ways in which strategic discourse (itself promoted as a subject of study by Knights and Morgan (1990,1991,1995)) is historically contingent upon practices of accounting. I take up this task of inaugurating the study of accounting practice and strategy discourse, from strategy to accounting, to develop a new perspective of how their interaction takes place. This gives birth to a re-reading of the strategy (and accounting) literatures, from the direction of a constitutive notion of accounting practices. In particular, the processual and critical schools of strategy are found to promote conventional notions of accounting as mirror, as secondary and passive practice, which circulate beneath the usual level of visibility. Building on this emergent approach, a post- Foucauldian theory of practices is outlined from a methodological viewpoint. This approach does not begin from such general categories as 'the individual', 'the social' or 'the economic', and thereby does not follow conventional understandings of 'doing ethnography'. The inquiry is empirically situated within the context of a longitudinal investigation (1997-2000) into the U. K. based part of a global telecommunications company, Teleco. I discover complex interactions between accounting practices and the workings of strategy, both as presence and absence. There is a partial presence of strategy even within the most 'strategic' parts of Teleco, in conjunction with a growing absence within those parts most distant from 'the strategy'. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, the spread of accounting and accounting based-practices rolls on, albeit in a non-uniform way. This brings forth the possibility of a strategic accounting, one whose practices are perhaps most visibly internalised and effected on my very self, thus adding weight to the rejection within this thesis of the metaphysical categories of either 'strategy' or 'accounting.

Sato, Carlos Eduardo Yamasaki. "Building the network as a platform for integrated solutions and service innovations in the transition to the next generation of telecommunications : the case of BT." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2010. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/2321/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the development of capabilities by incumbent telecommunications operators in the context of the transition to the Next Generation Network (NGN). In particular, it examines the case of BT in the UK, as a large-scale first mover in this transition. The research is based on recent developments in the telecommunications industry, and the empirical evidence was obtained through documentary analysis and a large number of interviews. Using the resource-based view (RBV) as a foundation, the wider theoretical contribution of this thesis lies in the proposition that integrated solutions are constructed through the combination of platform strategy, project business and service innovation. A unique contribution is to consider the customer/user perspective, as the traditional literature on integrated solutions relies heavily on the supplier perspective. Another specific contribution is in the integration of two aspects of the platform strategy that are usually treated separately in the literature: (i) the reusability of components and subsystems; and (ii) the openness of the platform to external actors in order to drive innovation in the industry. The empirical evidence points to the development of the following approaches by BT: (i) the deployment of the network as a platform, integrating both aspects mentioned above; (ii) the adoption of a customer-centric approach which resulted in the establishment of a new business unit, BT Global Services (BTGS), that required the development of stronger capabilities in integrated solutions, especially in professional services (i.e. consultancy, project management and systems integration); (iii) the use of the term ‘open innovation' as a management injunction within BT in order to coordinate several initiatives which bring together internal and external collaborators and resources to innovate in services. The above approaches, however, have not changed BT's core capability in the provision of network/infrastructure services. The challenge is to connect BT's platform to their customers' networks and to shape long-term relationships to enhance the profitability of the integrated solutions. Finally, the findings suggest that the platform and customercentric strategies may not be enough (or even be the right ones) for the survival and growth in the long-term future of BT in the telecommunications industry. This is evidenced by the recent failure (as of 2008) of BTGS to provide professional services profitably.

Abstract: This thesis aims to analyse and understand how do service companies that offer free-on the air and pay TV and telephony operators (fixed and mobile) are using their accumulated resources and acquiring new ones in order to be competitive in the exploration of new business models. The latter are becoming possible owing to the present phenomenon of the digital convergence, focusing on the production, distribution and delivery of audiovisual content for entertainment (ACE). This analysis was based on the theoretical contribution of the Resource Based View (RBV), built by the concepts of resources, core competencies and dynamic capabilities from Barney, Prahalad and Hamel, and Teece, Pisano and Shuen, as well as their developments related with firms' strategies. The RBV analysis was supplemented by theoretical approaches about innovation in services from Gallouj and others as a way to identify resources. A broad qualitative research led in important TV operators - Globo, SBT, Band and Net Serviços - and telephony operators - Oi, Telefônica, TIM and Claro - as well as the theoretical approach chosen, have allowed the development of a model of analysis (categories of resources) and its application. It has started with the resources transfer framework of the pre-convergence period, until the present stage. These elements helped to reach the conclusion that these firms' strategies are not only adaptative with respect to this new market, but they are paving the way for the future market of ACE services. This is a market which is being created and developed, increasing the complexity of analysis and decision making processes of their companies' managers, when it refers to the identification of opportunities and threats

Abstract:
Mobile content is digital universe's biggest news in the 21st Century. The development of networks and devices has fuelled ubiquitous connectivity globally among wide segments of population. However, its big impulse has come from the rise of complex content and applications ecosystems, lead by technological platforms. In this work, activity of value chain players (content creators, terminal suppliers, network managers, operating systems suppliers, regulators, users and advertising sector) within mobile content is analysed. Furthermore, main disruption factors of the ecosystem (Apple and Google; the App store phenomenon; social media; cloud computing; and network neutrality) are studied. This research concludes asserting the specificity of mobile content and foresees user data in mobility as the next big value creation vector linked to content for the next future.

Pistollato, Michele. "Essays on the Industrial Organization of Telecommunications." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/96708.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis provides three different essays that theoretically analyze different topics regarding the industrial organization of telecommunications. The first essay discusses oligopolistic competition in telecommunications markets where flat tariffs are applied to the end-users. Despite fixed fees being very common at present, economists have paid little attention to this pricing practice. Current theories indicate that, under this scheme of competition, regulators cannot affect social welfare when a duopoly of telecom operators competes for end-users. In the thesis, I show that, when imperfect competition among at least three operators takes place, social welfare is sensitive to regulation of the access price. Moreover I allow for asymmetries in the efficiency of providing telecommunication services, and I characterize the optimal access prices. Further policy indications are also included. The second essay is a study on how the access price affects a network operator’s choice of the retail pricing regime. It is shown that, when the access price is high, providers decide to only charge the callers (Calling Party Pays). However, when the access price is low, providers also charge the receivers (Receiving Party Pays). Moreover, market penetration and total welfare are compared between the two pricing regimes. The model suggests that, for high values of the call externality, market penetration and total welfare are larger in a Receiving Party Pays regime when the access charge is close to zero. Conversely, when the call externality is low, a Calling Party Pays regime is the market outcome when the access charge is higher. As a result, market penetration and total welfare are maximized. Finally, in the third essay, it is developed develop a model of competition in Internet provision and content service as a two-sided market and evaluate the effects of network neutrality on the incentives of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to invest in innovation. In this framework, ISPs have asymmetric network capacities and Content Providers (CPs) distribute asymmetric contents. Consumers decide which provider to connect to and which content to browse. When ISPs prioritize one of the contents, end-users migrate from the larger ISP to the smaller. If ISPs can charge a relatively high fee to CPs to provide the prioritized service, both ISPs have lower incentives to expand their networks compared to the case where network neutrality is imposed.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the industrial design role against a backdrop of the technological and business development of advanced personal telecommunication products - defined within this thesis as System Orientated Products (SOPs) - and systems. SOPs are becoming functionally and visually sophisticated but offer less physical feedback to users in relation to purpose, operation and value. The thesis argues that if designers are involved early during development they may enhance commercial success, help teams to explore user issues, and strengthen user empathy with individual devices and task environments. The literature review explored industrial design, models of product development, and user issues associated with SOP development (SOPD). Findings suggest that industrial design is characterised by lateral and experience-based problem solving activities that can expand understanding of design opportunity and end-user knowledge. Product development teams, in contrast, support different specialist interests, and therefore, it is harder to maintain a collective user focus. This is illustrated within linear models of the design process, defined by the Design Methods Movement in the 1960s, and early generations of the innovation process described by Rothwell (Dogdson and Rothwell, 1994), where the introduction of expertise is staged according to development activities. Since the 1970s more integrated and user-centred models (e. g. Quality Function Deployment or integrated New Product Development) have supported collaboration during development. The review concluded that it would be positive to organise SOPD around collaborative, user-centred goals. A qualitative case analysis of industrial design activity during SOPD added to the literature review and the development of guidelines that outline a designer's optimal involvement during SOPD. Five case interviews were conducted with development specialists in the UK to compare development activity. Participants included engineering manager Larkin, and industrial design specialists Berry, Desbarats, Hohl, and McBrien. It was concluded that designers rarely adopt specific SOPD strategies, but support development teams with wide-ranging experience and problem solving abilities, and help to focus user requirements. A design process model is proposed that positions the Industrial designer as an integrator of design knowledge within development teams when clarifying design briefs. Implemented as a web-based design tool and co-ordinated by the designer, it supports an evolving knowledge base for development teams. Evaluation of the tool involved implementing a simplified e-mail version with development specialists. An industrial designer was asked to explore a specified design opportunity, then an engineer and an ergonomist responded to the emerging data. The exercise was repeated with a similar sample of specialists to compare data entry patterns. Data analysis suggested that the tool would offer an open and unrestricted platform for developing a brief, and encourage broader exploration of user requirements. The research conclusions highlight the exponential development of SOPs over the last decade, and the rapid response made by the industry to new and emerging technologies. This made it difficult to prove objectively the research hypothesis. However, conclusions suggested that opportunities exist for broadening industrial design contribution within SOPD in light of the clear shift from a technologically led, to a user- experience- and context-driven approach, reinforced by collaborative and multidisciplinary practice.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to investigate the telecommunication markets in India, Singapore and Thailand in order to find the potentiality of the markets which could be considered by the company to expand its business in telecommunication field and also to take a proper strategy. Michael Porter proposed a model that allows analyzing why some nations are more competitive than others are, and why some industries within nations are more competitive than others are. (Porter, 1990) Porter believed that there are four main determinants which can shape the nation‘s competitiveness. In this paper ―Diamond model‖was practiced to analyze three considerable different telecom markets: India, Singapore and Thailand. The Indian telecom industry is the world's fastest growing industry. Singapore is a miniscule nation with slight population and nature resource scarcity but Singapore has developed its national ICT industry successful ranks in 2nd place out of 138 countries in 2010-2011 . Thailand‘s mobile penetration rate has reached to 100% but its 3G service still could not move forward. The research found that Singapore‘s telecom industry is highly competitive in the global environment. India‘s telecom industry within its nation is more competitive than the other industries . On the contrary, Thailand‘s telecom industry develops not as superior as other industries such as its manufacturing or trading. At the end, predictions for the short time and suggestions of these objective markets have been commented to contribute to telecom business development in Asian region for target audience.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of mobile telecommunication markets, in exploring how structure, technological investments of players and regulation have affected prices of services; but also in measuring the magnitude of consumer inertia and myopia in a rapidly evolving environment. The first chapter investigates determinants of mobile services price drop in France between 2011 and 2014.Based on a hedonic price regression, this study provides evidence of introduction of a new technology and competition being responsible for most of the price reduction. The second chapter questions howinter-temporal trade-off of consumers selecting a handset and a tariff has been affected by the increasing availability of sim-only contracts. Estimating a discrete choice model based on choice setswhich combine extensive number of tariffs and handsets, it is possible to capture an average level of consumer’s myopia. Results show myopia decreased along with emergence of sim-only contracts and converge towards a value which is close to what has been estimated in other markets, meaning consumers only exhibit a modest undervaluation of future. The third chapter measures the magnitude inertia in repeated choice of smartphones. Exploiting data of handset switchings between 2012 and 2014 of sim-only consumers, we estimate discrete choice models to estimate switching costs between brandsand operating systems. We then rely on our model to simulate market shares without inertia and showthat the market share of Android and smaller operating systems would increase at the expense of the market share of iOS

Abstract:
Questions and problems related to the articulation of industrial re 1 at ions structures in modern soc i ety have been rna tters for long debate over a number of years. However, the establishment of industrial relations formations is a product of a variety of complex societal processes located inside and outside the irTlllediate industrial environment. This thesis examines the links that exist between wider societal processes and systems of industrial relations and workers I participation with reference to the Greek Telecommunications Sector. In the first instance (Chapter 1), issues of economy and society tha t have an effect upon indus tri a 1 re 1 at ions are exami ned wi th reference to the processes of gl oba 1 economi c deve 1 opment, ca pi ta 1 accumulation, dependency and the more recent phenomena of 'flexible specialization ' and 'post-Fordism'. These are related to the presentation of industrial relations structures (Chapter 2) which are examined using comparative evidence to illustrate their various differences and similarities. It is argued that industrial relations and workers I participation structures have to be examined in the 1ight of national and international patterns of political, social and economic development. Also, a critical evaluation of contemporary approaches to industrial relations is presented. Chapter 3 is concerned with identifying and evaluating the main issues related to Greek economic and social development. That is examined in relation to the position of the country in the international division of labour and also to the national characteristics that articulate the specific nature of labour relations. Chapter 4 presents the case of the Telecommunication Sector using empirical material drawn from various sources, from observation and from employee responses to a questionnai reo The framework of industrial participation is discussed both in relation to the internal circumstances of the industry and also to the more general environment in which it is located. Finally, Chapter 5 re-evaluates the categories of 'industrial participation' and 'employment' in the specific context of Greek societal development and considers the validity of some of the concepts used in contemporary discussions of labour organization.

The privatization of the telecommunications sector in Brazil, caused structural changes in the market, going from state monopoly to a nearby structure of competitive markets. To prove this notion of evolution, were calculated for the mobile industry, some indices of industrial concentration, namely: market share, concentration ratios (CR), Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HH) and Theil entropy index (ET) by the number of cell phones by operators (inThousands) in the period 2000 to 2010, with all these measures confirming the decentralization of the mobile market in the last decade.

Abstract:

This thesis is a project carried out at the “Centre for RF measurements Technology“at the University of Gävle. The first aim was basically the characterization of different industrial indoor environments to get a model that describes dispersive features of each environment.

The results of previous measurements campaign on three industrial environments as steel mill, storage paper and industrial process mill are used. Also new Power Delay Profile (PDP) on corridor and laboratory has been developed.

Measurements for three frequency bands are done (183-683 MHz, 1640-2140MHz and 2200-2700MHz) and for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) industrial and laboratory scenaries cases are presented.

All these models have been compared with other existing models as Saleh-Valenzuela Model, Two Cluster Model and Indoor Power Delay Profile Model (IPDP Model) and fit-line, typical deviation are shown.

Finally we present a study of the different systems used in the industry and the best suited system to the conditions is chosen.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the industrial environment. This study aims to understand the difficulties wireless communications have when performing in these types of environment with a specific standard (and protocol) Zigbee. These difficulties are due mainly to the physical effects and interferences as well the electromagnetic waves from these wireless transmission signals can suffer. The background of this project is to analyze how industries can implement wireless sensor networks (using Zigbee standard) for their factories in order for them to be beneficial i.e. reliable or if it is possible. Industries normally tend to keep in the path of the old fashioned way i.e. wired systems which are more robust and can cope with the hard system requirements. Some study on these environment effects (interference as well) is performed. The results show how this (Zigbee) sensor network could be or should be implemented in order to have the best performance (disposition of devices, type of environment considering only industrial environments, etc.). Specifically, these results show that Zigbe wireless sensor networks are limited to some conditions in order to obtain the desired reliability. These conditions are that these networks must be performed in absorbing environments, LoS disposition of devices, not too long diatance between devices and not other networks in the same area using the same frequency band. The limitation of absorbing environments is because the dispersion effects in the (highly) reflective environments are critically damageful for the link. The limitation of the other devices operating in the same frequency band in a close area is due to the fact that Zigbee has no frequency diversity. Last but not least, the limitations to LoS and not too long maximum range (approximately 50 meters) are related since the range would be (much) lower than 50 meters if the communication was in NLoS disposition of devices. The noise in this environment is also studied and modeled. The results show that as the impulsive index (which is ameasure of the number of impulses that reach the receiver in a certain unit of time) takes larger values, the distribution approximates that of a Gaussian and as A takes lower values the reults show an impulsive characteristic. The Probability of error is computed for values of A less than 1, where the impulsive characterstic is shown, and as A takes larger values the error is greater.

Abstract:
The effects of economic and political transition dominated Thailand’s economy since the 1990s; with the great change from economic and trade victory to widespread financial slump, the political crossroads in 1992 and the reform of political democracy, Thailand drew up a preliminary version of a new constitution and pledged significant political and economic improvement. In the context of the reconstitution of the Thai telecommunications policy from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 2001, this study presents the progress of restructuring Thai telecommunications industry and examines key forces determining the policy-making process of its Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). In order to investigate the role of manifold policy factors and the role of the Thai State in ICT policy formulation, the study applies political model of policy process and is based on the conceptual framework of J. P. Singh (1999)’s factors in determining the nature of the telecommunications restructuring in developing country and the State’s role in the decision-making process. While the primary impelling force for restructuring was Thailand’s ambition to become the economic centre of Southeast Asia, a vast number of secondary forces are discovered to have been involved in the restructuring of telecommunications industry and evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) policy. Economic cooperation and a global liberalisation programme enforced by the WTO and the IMF have had an explicit effect on Thailand’s policymaking. Internally, in the collocation of the advanced development of parliamentary democracy and intensifying money politics, business interests became steadily stronger in ICT policymaking through the more direct political manipulation of the situation to gain some advantage at the top levels. There was also a growing impact from public interest groups and the Senate. The diversity of interests in the policy process limited the power of the State to direct policy decisions. In a system in which policy-making was plagued by political infighting among groups seeking to control the social system and the activities from which they derived private benefit, the policy-making function of the State was seriously impaired and the progress of Thai telecommunications reform and its ICT policy underwent a major crisis in consequence. The thesis seeks to answer: how the ICTs policymaking developed during the telecommunications industry reform, and the interplays among the policy forces; and what role the State played in the policy-making process. It argues that the Thai State’s weakness to create a regulatory regime to implement the ICTs policy of telecommunication liberalisation represents essentially a problem of institutional change. The thesis demonstrates that the State role in policymaking was phenomenon, and even facilitated particular group’s interest and idea, and that it was ill-suited implementation for society at large.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the social construction of trust in industrial clusters of telecommunications in Vietnam. In the framework of an increasing international competition, the stake of this thesis is to understand how social relationships are organised within clusters. In this thesis, we will analyse the concept of trust, as a sociological issue, to grasp the meaning given by actors to this concept. Industrial clusters enable us to observe various cooperation and competition situations in which economic and social exchanges are concentrated. This study of the Vietnamese case is an opportunity to better comprehend “actors rational” located at the crossroads of many changes on different analytical scales. Local, national or international rules have been evolving and interacting since 1986 when the country began an opening policy (đổi mới) to international relationships. Trust is often regarded as a way to minimise the uncertainty resulting from this socio-economic context of high competitiveness. We have carried out this sociological study to shed a new light on the different strategies of the actors in order to establish a situation in which they feel they can “trust”. As a result, we have identified three ideal-types of fame, involvement and adjustment, with a view to demonstrate the different forms and meanings implied in the concept of trust

This dissertation is the result of exploring the phenomenon of the adoption of a service innovation, in particular mobile telecommunications service, with the goal of informing the design of mobile health services. A grounded research study led to the finding that older adults may not abandon a legacy service, such as landline telecommunications service, when they adopted mobile telecommunications service. To further understand the results of the first study, a multidisciplinary literature review was undertaken and resulted in a typology of the factors of individual-level innovation adoption that can be applied by human factors professionals in the field. The three categories of factors included macro environmental, innovation-specific, and human factors. A research analysis of a study done by a county health department provided insights into what older adults contributed to the service production process in healthcare services including which common proxies do not accurately reflect the situations of older adults. A three-state process model of individual-level innovation adoption, which incorporated the role of a legacy system, was developed using the adoption patterns of mobile telecommunications services. In this model, individuals move from a state of using a legacy system to adopting a innovative system while still using the legacy system. After a period of time, the individual moves from the state of dual use to fully abandoning the legacy system and using only the innovative system. A compartmental mathematical model is developed to allow the model to be simulated and future service demand needs can be better predicted. Two decision-making processes were identified to be employed by individuals in the abandonment of a landline telecommunications services. Finally, recommendations for the design of mobile health services are provided.

The goal of this project is to create a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) within a company. We will then talk about WSN within Industry 4.0. The company has a large productionwarehouse, where numerous machines form their production process. Currently, theproduction machines are disconnected from the data network, so everything that happensmust be manually verified by the operators. It will need to connect the machines to the network to make the production processinnovative. The choice of technologies to be used will fall on wireless technologies, whichhave numerous advantages: not laying cables, being able to create various types ofnetworks and quickly connecting many machines. During the project, it will look for thebest solutions to interconnect the machines, selecting specific devices able to satisfy allrequests. The reference scenario is a production warehouse of a company operating in themetalworking sector. Inside the warehouse, there are numerous production machines, which form a heterogeneous machine park. All these machines, which have no possibilityof data exchange, must be equipped with devices capable of communicating the extracteddata. As the reference scenario is an industrial production warehouse, it can speak of In-dustry 4.0.Various communication technologies will be studied, to update the machines to havea digital representation of the production process. These communication technologieswill be partially wireless, in particular for devices to be attached to the machines, andpartly wired, to interface with the external network. It will see how it is possible to extract data from the machines, send them via devicesto a central node, which will process them to give a digital vision of the production.

Abstract:
In industrial environments, wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are used to supply energy to low-power sensor nodes for battery-less applications. This thesis presents a WPT system to power LoRa nodes in order to charge the highest number of charts in a given reliable time for industrial plants. The system is operated in 2.45 GHz frequency and the energy is transferred from the chart that has the main energy source to the rest of the charters. The LoRa nodes are attached to every charters and this allows to transmit essential information about its location and identification to a central station for trailers’ validation of completeness. A 32-patch antenna array is designed to provide the energy wirelessly from one chart to another and certain amount of power is divided toward the LoRa node to charge. The designed system consists of a full-wave rectifier and non-linear simulations are made for optimization.

The exchange relationship has evolved as a result of the turbulent economic environment, and replaced the old psychologicalcontract between employee and employer. The present study looked at the extent to which the performance management process influences employee-employer relations. The. research focused on the impact of performance management on employee behaviour and their subsequent contribution to the success of organisational interventions. The ernplovee-emplover relationship often suffers due to the unsuccessfulor ineffective implementation of performance management systems, negatively affecting the organisational climate for the implementation of organisational interventions

Alotaibi, Hana. "Strategic planning : a practice perspective on strategic initiatives : an applied study on Saudi telecommunication companies." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/354400/.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the link between strategic planning activities, and the development and implementation of strategic initiatives. It explores the activities and practitioners involved in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives during strategic planning. The theoretical lens applied in this research is activity theory (Blackler, 1993; Engestrom, 1987; Jarzabkowski, 2003), which is proposed to help explore the strategic planning process over time (Vygotsky, 1978; Jarzabkowski, 2003, Jarzabkowski & Balogun, 2009), in addition to the exploration of the internal dynamics of organisational continuity and change (Jarzabkowski, 2003). In order to achieve the research aim, a qualitative positivist paradigm (Burrell & Morgan, 1979; Easterby-Smith et al., 1991, Nutt, 1989, 2004) and multiple case study methods (Eisenhardt, 1989; Yin, 2003) were employed to guide the entire research process. Multiple data collection methods were employed, namely observations, interviews, and document analysis in three Saudi telecommunications companies over a period of more than 2 years. Eisenhardt (1989), Miles & Huberman, (1994), and Yin’s (2003) methods were employed for analysing the qualitative data. The outcomes highlighted the activities of the strategic planning process in general, and then on those specific activities that influence the development and implementation of strategic initiatives in the three cases. Subsequently, within and cross-case analysis explored further, the three stages of the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, i.e. of initiation, development, and implementation. The outcomes also explained how these specific activities influence the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, in terms of the sequences of activities, and the contradictions that have been found between their components. The study also provided solid evidence on the practitioners involved in the strategic planning process and on their role during the three stages, and on the tools used during these stages of strategic initiatives. This study makes several potential contributions including analysing strategic planning activities through the use of the activity theory model, understanding the influence of the strategic planning activities on developing and implementing strategic initiatives, and extending understanding in relation to the strategic planning process in the context of the Saudi telecommunications industry. This understanding is significant in the business environment due to the limited amount of existing research of the strategic planning process from a practice perspective and in the Saudi environment in particular.

Abstract:
Nowadays the concepts of ”smart factory” and ”Industry 4.0” are very important because they represent the last industrial revolution, which promises to have a huge impact on human lives and on the production cycles of every industry. The main driver of this revolution is the 5G technology which is able to provide higher performance by means of ultra low latency, very high multi-Gbps peak data rate and massive connectivity. In light of these considerations, it is vital that appropriate channel models and traffic models for the industrial environment are elaborated. Indeed, the industrial environment is characterised by particular features which are not present in other scenarios, even in the indoor scenario that can seem the most similar. This thesis focuses on the latest channel model proposed by 3GPP and on the traffic model suggested by 5G-ACIA through a white paper. In order to deploy a flexible industrial environment where all machineries are interconnected, can communicate with each other and can be controlled remotely, it is fundamental to understand how the channel model can be defined and how the traffic generated can be characterised. The main features of the 3GPP channel model are pointed out, by focusing in particular on the industrial scenario, and the peculiar parameters of the traffic model are highlighted. After that, the two models are applied to the BI-REX pilot line, which represents a peculiar example of new production line where the traditional technologies are integrated with new ones in order to obtain a fully interconnected industrial environment. The thesis aims at showing how to set the most important parameters of the two models and the most common use cases in an industrial traffic model. It represents a starting point for new works that want to implement these models.

The telecommunications industry ('Telco'), a service provider business, is undergoing significant changes such as deregulations, technology changes and increasing competition. Managers face increased pressure to bring new products with the latest technology into the market faster. Few previous studies have analysed New Product Development (NPD) projects in this hypercompetitive industry. This research addresses this gap by investigating Telco NPD projects and the associated skill sets needed by successful project managers.--The study evaluated how project managers' various skills contribute to project management success. Incorporating clear definitions grounded in the recent literature on NPD, management and leadership, the research proposed a new organising framework of four groups of skill sets: technical, leadership, managerial and administrative. Technical skills are the knowledge of technologies on which the project work is based. Leadership skills involve influencing project stakeholders to deliver a quality product within time and budget. Managerial skills are needed to develop and execute project plans and to get project work done. Administrative skills include understanding an organisation's structure, culture, policies, processes, methods and tools.--Previous classifications for Telco NPD projects have over-emphasised product innovation and undervalued the process aspects. While small projects provide fewer management challenges, this study found that project managers of large and complex projects require all four skill sets. Managerial skills are mandatory. Technical and administrative skills enhance understanding of the technology and business processes. Leadership skills are limited at an operational level. Managerial and administrative skills are essential for developing and implementing project plans; technical skills are important in the initial project stages; leadership skills are needed from the beginning until delivering a new product.--The research outcomes can be used when hiring and developing NPD project manager professionals in the Telco industry to complement current project manager competency standards, which do not cover all the skill sets. Findings may be applicable to Telco companies in other countries new to such market conditions. Furthermore, other industries may adapt the skill set framework to suit their own particular requirements.

Abstract:
The applications of wireless sensor networks, WSN, are getting popular in the different areas reaching from daily usage to industrial usage. The performance evaluation of WSN deployed in industrial and high-voltage areas is receiving a great attention and becoming an interesting area of research. This thesis addresses the performance issues of WSN in high-voltage and harsh industrial environments. This study has been carried out at the facilities of High Voltage Test Lab of ABB. Typically, wireless sensor network contains wireless field devices (nodes) connected to a base station via a central gateway. The gate way centralizes information gathered and processed by the nodes. The nodes can communicate with each other and with the gateway via radio wave. The quality and usability of the data sent by WSN can be degraded due to the packet loss and delay. In the presence of high-voltage, the electromagnetic interference, EMI, can affect the performance of WSN. In this study the performance of WSN is evaluated in terms of packet loss and delay. We also focus on the effect of EMI on hardware devices as well as on signal transmission. EMI was expected at wide frequency band due to harsh industrial and high voltage environments. It was expected that EMIs could increase a bit error rate and/or packet loss. The EMI can also change the sensitivity of the nodes. For the performance evaluation of WSN network throughput, latency, path stability, data reliability and average value of the received signal strength indicator, RSSI, are used and measured. The results show that the electromagnetic frequencies of harsh industrial and high voltage environments affect the wireless sensor network performance.
