Tripattana, Kanyika. "Telecommunications reform in Thailand : state-business relations." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30552.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about relations between the Thai state and telecommunications business during the reform between 1980 and 2000. These relations have changed from a 'Bureaucratic Polity' model before the late 1980s to partnership during the 1990s. These changes were resulted from the internal economic and political development and the external force of globalization; both bring the internationalisation of state, capital and labour. Through the reform, the business sector is gaining its influence through the implementation of liberalization policy. However, this study argues that the Thai state has been able to maintain a certain degree of autonomy in relation to the business sector during the reform. In explaining Thai state-business relations, this study applies Robert Cox's 'Mediator' State and a 'Framework for Action' and Gramsci's notion of hegemony as an analytical approach. These combined theoretical insights not only help to explain the changing relations of the Thai state and business during the reform, they also assist in addressing the relations between the Thai state and the world telecommunications order, as well as revealing conflict and co-operation among state agencies and between state-business players involved in the reform.

Abstract:
In this paper, we study the influence of the National Telecom Business Volume by the data in 2008 that have been published in China Statistical Yearbook of Statistics. We illustrate the procedure of modeling “National Telecom Business Volume” on the following eight variables, GDP, Consumption Levels, Retail Sales of Social Consumer Goods Total Renovation Investment, the Local Telephone Exchange Capacity, Mobile Telephone Exchange Capacity, Mobile Phone End Users, and the Local Telephone End Users. The testing of heteroscedasticity and multicollinearity for model evaluation is included. We also consider AIC and BIC criterion to select independent variables, and conclude the result of the factors which are the optimal regression model for the amount of telecommunications business and the relation between independent variables and dependent variable. Based on the final results, we propose several recommendations about how to improve telecommunication services and promote the economic development.

Abstract:
The aim of this interdisciplinary work, with roots in business economics and engineering, is to propose a new and innovative business model starting from a description of existing business models enabled by 5G and 6G. The new business model, called the sharing platform business model (SPBM), is based on the concept of sharing economy and multi-sided business model. The SPBM exploits the advantages of a platform, which facilitates the collaboration and cooperation among all the stakeholders in the 5G ecosystem. The ongoing fifth generation of mobile networks has disrupted, in a positive way, the future wireless communication networks; the most significant novelty compared to previous generations is the capability of 5G to serve the requirements of the vertical industries. 5G and the future 6G are able to transform industries and to provide services at gigabit/s speeds, low latency and to open new business opportunities. The mobile ecosystem has completely changed, previous generations were based on voice and data services and business models characterized by a bilateral relationship between operators and their customers, on the other hand, 5G offers the opportunity to collaborate with vertical industries to provide new services for enterprises. Given these premises, there is a clear need for a complete change in business modelling to overcome traditional models and to pave the way for innovative business models, which shall be able to face the business transformation of the mobile ecosystem. One of the main factors responsible for the change in business modelling is the uncertainty regarding the network investors: while in traditional business models the investors were mainly the MNOs, in the new mobile ecosystem this aspect is unclear. The question is: who should invest in the network infrastructure? Probably the solution could be the creation of public-private partnerships but building a business model based on this premise is completely a novel exercise.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 97-102).
China's recent entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 2001 has lent speed to an ongoing series of market reforms that has opened up the massive Chinese domestic market to the world. The thought of China selling its products and services freely in global markets in exchange for opening up its own growing domestic market of 1.2 billion people is staggering and demands for business and policy decision makers to have an understanding of China's unique investment landscape. Centering on technology venturing in the telecommunications sector in mainland China, this research identifies and analyzes patterns of deal-making and strategies that motivate business investments in the technology space in mainland China. Three investment orientations - cost- minimization, domestic market-driven and joint development - are proposed and verified using the research data. Data was collected on all publicly-reported deals in China, published in business reporting services in the English language including the China Business Review, Reuters, Investext, Dow Jones, and The Economist Intelligence Unit. Objective data on deal attributes was matched with subjective and evaluative data on strategies and expected deal significance. By performing content analysis and statistical analysis on the data collected, results were obtained regarding the investment orientations in mainland China of two companies, UTStarcom Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp. It was found that significant differences existed in the objective and subjective attributes of telecommunications business ventures in China.
(cont.) The two companies that were studied exhibited all proposed investment orientations, including the third joint development orientation that is emerging and directing investments into Sino-foreign partnership opportunities that jointly developed 3G products for the international market. There is a decreasing trend in number of Sino-foreign import contracts and an increasing trend in Sino-foreign exports in telecoms. These results point to the emergence of Chinese telecom companies that compete strongly in the Chinese marketplace and in international markets. Three deal drivers are identified from the deals that were studied, along with several possible risk-bearing changes that might result from policy influences in China. Difficulties in tracking deals are described and the implications of the research findings from a business and policy perspective are discussed.

Abdul, Rahim Suzari. "Supplier selection in the Malaysian telecommunications industry." Thesis, Brunel University, 2013. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7437.

Full text
Abstract:
Supplier selection plays an important role in any organisation. This study investigates and examines supplier selection criteria and the impacts on buying firm performance; specifically focusing on the telecommunications industry in Malaysia. Previous studies in this area have focussed on the criteria such as quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management and decision making tools and techniques. However, little research has been undertaken to include government policies and business ethics as elements in the supplier selection criteria. After a literature review and interviews, the development of conceptual frameworks and a number of hypotheses were put forward. To achieve an in-depth study, four major telecommunications service provider companies in Malaysia were chosen as a case study. A questionnaire was used as the main instrument in gathering data. The questionnaire is principally concerned with the understanding of supplier selection and its criteria; based upon the variables that are used for the model and hypothesis testing. The study also investigates the relationship between supplier selection and the impact of supplier selection to the company performance. This model was tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) technique with the AMOS software application. Results indicated all of the criteria include quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management, decision making tools and techniques, government policy and business ethics as valid constructs. A good model fit was also established. The findings of this research conclude that the influencing criteria to supplier selection in the telecommunications industry in Malaysia are supplier delivery performance standards and supplier relationship management even when considering the remainder of the above mentioned elements. The price factors were found to be less important due to this factor possibly leading to unhealthy competition in the market in terms of price wars among the suppliers in order to win the business. Most of the criteria are also interrelated to each other and affect the supplier selection decision. This model has added new perspectives to the study of supplier selection in the supply chain management field. As for future research it is suggested that intangible elements such as political, cultural and social influences are included in the conceptual framework; as this would offer important insight for management bodies in organisation, academia and public policy fields alike.

Abstract:
The telecommunications landscape in South Africa is changing. The monopolistic nature of the sector, previously dominated by Telkom has come to an end. Telecommunications companies, in particular SMMEs face the opportunity as well as challenges to find new ways of doing business successfully in this changing landscape. The research problem states a business model for SMMEs in the telecommunications sector. The author’s research is aimed to assist SMMEs in this sector to reposition them and be successful. The literature review focused on the local telecommunications market in South Africa, a comparisons between telecommunications markets in relation to other countries with similarities in their telecoms sectors as well as the opportunities and challenges SMMEs face in the market space. Regulation and new technologies pose opportunities but also potential dangers for business owners to conduct business. Traditionally, a typical resell model would be fully dependant on the way the monopolist determined the shape and structures of small companies, but the research indicated innovation and creativity will be the drivers to be successful today. The research design was done by using a survey questionnaire to telecoms end users. The literature review and a survey aimed at the consumer market were done and the findings highlights focus areas where SMMEs need to direct their energy and resources in to establish the business model. With reference to both the literature review and the empirical findings, the business model can be formulated and supported by a strong entrepreneurial person or group of people. In addition, the recommended business-level strategy is an integrated and coordinated set of commitments and actions the SMMEs will use to gain a competitive advantage by exploiting core competencies in specific telecoms markets.

Abstract:
The concept of Business Intelligence (BI) as an essential competitive tool has been widely emphasized in the strategic management literature. Yet the sustainability of the firms’ competitive advantage provided by BI capability is not well explained. To fill this gap, this study attempts to develop a model for successful BI deployment and empirically examines the association between BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage.Taking the telecommunications industry in Malaysia as a case example, the research particularly focuses on the influencing perceptions held by telecommunications decision makers and executives on factors that impact successful BI deployment. The research further investigates the relationship between successful BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage of the telecommunications organizations. Another important aim of this study is to determine the effect of moderating factors such as organization culture, business strategy and use of BI tools on BI deployment and the sustainability of firm’s competitive advantage. This research uses combination of theoretical foundation of resource-based theory and diffusion of innovation theory to examine BI success and its relationship with firm’s sustainability. The research adopts the positivist paradigm and a two-phase sequential mixed method consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed. A tentative research model is developed first based on extensive literature review. Qualitative field study then is carried out to fine tune the initial research model. Findings from the qualitative method are also used to develop measures and instruments for the next phase of quantitative method. A survey is carried out with sample of business analysts and decision makers in telecommunications firms and is analyzed by Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modeling. The findings revealed that some internal resources of the organizations such as BI governance and the perceptions of BI’s characteristics influence the successful deployment of BI. Organizations that practice good BI governance with strong moral and financial support from upper management will have better chance in realizing their dreams of having successful BI initiatives in place. The scope of BI governance includes providing sufficient support and commitment in BI funding and implementation, laying out proper BI infrastructure and staffing and establishing a corporate-wide policy and procedures regarding BI. The perceptions about the characteristics of BI such as its relative advantage, complexity, compatibility and observability are also significant in ensuring BI success. It thus implied that the executives’ positive perceptions towards BI initiatives are deemed necessary. Moreover, the most important results of this study indicated that with BI successfully deployed, executives would use the knowledge provided for their necessary actions in sustaining the organizations’ competitive advantage in terms of economics, social and environmental issues. The BI model well explained how BI was deployed in Malaysian telecommunications companies. This study thus contributes significantly to the existing literature that will assist future BI researchers especially in achieving sustainable competitive advantage. In particular, the model will help practitioners to consider the resources that they are likely to consider when deploying BI. Finally, the applications of this study can be extended through further adaptation in other industries and various geographic contexts.

Abstract:

There is a void in global strategy research on companies based in developing economies. This thesis aims to extend the knowledge within this particular field by focusing on Chinese companies with global aspirations. The results bear significant implications for the Chinese firms' partners and competitors in developed countries. The thesis encompasses two of the largest Chinese enterprises in the telecom equipment sector - Huawei and ZTE. Both companies are pioneers in terms of globalizing their sales and operations. A globalized underlying industry and market is an important precursor for the existence of truly global corporations implementing global strategies. Thus, a thorough investigation of the global telecom equipment industry was conducted, in order to provide a solid platform and deeper understanding prior to the study of the two Chinese companies' globalization process. Yip's 19 globalization forces framework was utilized to analyze the telecom equipment industry - the results indicated strong pressure for globalization within the industry. The large extent and degree of industry globalization facilitated the internationalization and globalization of the Chinese telecom companies Huawei and ZTE. Four distinctive features were identified after scrutinizing the corporate global strategies of the largest Chinese telecom equipment companies; (1) China-centrism - a considerable portion of Huawei and ZTE's revenue is generated from the domestic Chinese market. Half of the staff stationed at overseas offices are Chinese nationals dispatched from the headoffice in China, (2) R&D focus - Huawei and ZTE spend more than 10% of their annual revenue in research and development activities. R&D centers in strategic geographical areas worldwide have been set up in order to combine advanced research around the world with low-cost development in China, (3) Foreign partnership - Huawei and ZTE are actively engaged in cooperation with numerous well-known foreign companies. The Chinese firms are participants in several industry organizations and interest-groups. These associations boost the recognition and legitimacy of Huawei and ZTE in developed markets, and (4) Government influence - Huawei and ZTE's growth and successful international expansion would not be possible without the strong support and financial backing by the Chinese government. But not all government influence is positive, company executives of Huawei and ZTE are increasingly vocal about their displeasure in terms of how badly the Chinese government protects local firms in the domestic Chinese market. The globalization strategies adapted by the two Chinese firms resemble the "Total global strategy" framework, since both companies internationalized and globalized their core corporate values and strategies after developing and strengthening them initially. It is important for partners (enterprises as well as government agencies) and competitors in developed countries to acknowledge the existence and global competitiveness of companies based in developing countries. Partnership opportunities should be sought after actively, as globalizing companies in developed countries are still keen to seek cooperation that can strengthen their legitimacy and credibility in developed markets. A case study conducted for Invest in Sweden Agency (ISA) is also included in the study, which details a strategy and activities framework for the government agency's future work, by utilizing the knowledge and insight gained through the analysis sections of this thesis.

Oberholzer, Stephanus Marius. "A model to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in the South African telecommunications sector." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1012150.

Abstract:
The fast pace of technological advancements is a driver of change in the world. In telecommunications, advancements as well as sector transformation pose challenges to entrepreneurs to remain competitive. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the promotion of entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa. In order to achieve this purpose, the objective was to develop and test a theoretical model to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in this sector. The purpose of the study was that if the factors that influence entrepreneurial businesses in this sector can be identified and recommendations applied, the competitiveness of these businesses can be improved. The approach was as follows: 1. Identify the factors, in a literature review, in three areas related to this study, namely, Entrepreneurial Orientation, Telecommunications and Benchmarking; 2. Develop a conceptual theoretical model comprising these identified factors which formed the base for the data collection; 3. Develop a measuring instrument to empirically test the relationships described in the conceptual model; 4. Empirically test the proposed model and suggested hypotheses by means of sourcing data from entrepreneurs in the telecommunications sector in South Africa and thereafter statistically analyse the sourced data; 5. Formulate the final theoretical model to support the research objective and 6. Propose recommendations based on the results of the statistical analysis. The three areas of literature study analysed were Entrepreneurial Orientation which focused on the entrepreneur, the entrepreneurial process and the positioning of technological entrepreneurs in the sector. The telecommunications section included an overview of telecommunications from a global perspective followed by specific focus on the South African sector. The section on benchmarking covered business performance aspects together with measurement techniques and benchmarking institutions relevant to entrepreneurship and telecommunications businesses. Initially, the literature study delivered four intervening variables (Entrepreneurial Orientation, Opportunity Recognition, Resource Allocation and Strategic Positioning) which influence entrepreneurial competitiveness. Within these four intervening variables, twelve underlying independent variables were identified. All the variables were hypothesised as they were perceived significantly to influence the dependent variable, perceived to be entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa. These factors, clearly defined and operationalised, were structured in a questionnaire which was sent to entrepreneurs in the telecommunications sector. A response rate of 37 percent was achieved. Data collected from 301 questionnaires were subjected to various statistical analysis techniques. Cronbach-alpha coefficients were calculated to confirm the validity and reliability of the measuring instrument that was tested whilst the latent variables were confirmed by exploratory factor analysis. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesised significance of the relationships between the variables. Due to the sample size limitation, the conceptual model could not be subjected to SEM as a whole and consequently two sub-models were identified and subjected to further analysis. The SEM results presented the factors influencing entrepreneurial competitiveness whereafter the final model was presented for this study. This study contributed to this specific field of knowledge as follows: 1. New literature contributions are made in the field of entrepreneurial competitiveness in a specific sector; 2. It is the first known research conducted into the promotion of entrepreneurial competitiveness in the telecommunications sector in South Africa; 3. A theoretical model was developed that can be used to promote entrepreneurial competitiveness in the sector and 4. It suggests recommendations on empirically tested factors that significantly influence entrepreneurial competitiveness. Additional knowledge has been gained through the identification and description of how the following individual factors significantly influence entrepreneurial competitiveness in this sector: Benchmarking; Entrepreneurial Mindset; Entrepreneurial Management; Entrepreneurial Orientation; Financial Resources; Infrastructural Change; Regulatory Alignment and Technological Entrepreneurship. The present study was conducted in a time frame where sector transformation is prevalent in South Africa. The current circumstances relating to sector transformation and infrastructural changes will not last forever. The theoretical model therefore is limited to the specific sector conditions in a specific time cycle. In conclusion, the model and managerial recommendations that are presented can act as a guideline for entrepreneurs to adopt in order to improve the competitiveness of their businesses.

Dassler, Thoralf. "A study of performance and regulation in telecommunications in the European Union." Thesis, Aston University, 2003. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10768/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at two issues. Firstly, statistical work was undertaken examining profit margins, labour productivity and total factor productivity in telecommunications in ten member states of the EU over a 21-year period (not all member states of the EU could be included due to data inadequacy). Also, three non-members, namely Switzerland, Japan and US, were included for comparison. This research was to provide an understanding of how telecoms in the European Union (EU) have developed. There are two propositions in this part of the thesis: (i) privatisation and market liberalisation improve performance; (ii) countries that liberalised their telecoms sectors first show a better productivity growth than countries that liberalised later. In sum, a mixed picture is revealed. Some countries performed better than others over time, but there is no apparent relationship between productivity performance and the two propositions. Some of the results from this part of the thesis were published in Dabler et al. (2002). Secondly, the remainder of the tests the proposition that the telecoms directives of the European Commission created harmonised regulatory systems in the member states of the EU. By undertaking explanatory research, this thesis not only seeks to establish whether harmonisation has been achieved, but also tries to find an explanation as to why this is so. To accomplish this, as a first stage to questionnaire survey was administered to the fifteen telecoms regulators in the EU. The purpose of the survey was to provide knowledge of methods, rationales and approaches adopted by the regulatory offices across the EU. This allowed for the decision as to whether harmonisation in telecoms regulation has been achieved. Stemming from the results of the questionnaire analysis, follow-up case studies with four telecoms regulators were undertaken, in a second stage of this research. The objective of these case studies was to take into account the country-specific circumstances of telecoms regulation in the EU. To undertake the case studies, several sources of evidence were combined. More specifically, the annual Implementation Reports of the European Commission were reviewed, alongside the findings from the questionnaire. Then, interviews with senior members of staff in the four regulatory authorities were conducted. Finally, the evidence from the questionnaire survey and from the case studies was corroborated to provide an explanation as to why telecoms regulation in the EU has reached or has not reached a state of harmonisation. In addition to testing whether harmonisation has been achieved and why, this research has found evidence of different approaches to control over telecoms regulators and to market intervention administered by telecoms regulators within the EU. Regarding regulatory control, it was found that some member states have adopted mainly a proceduralist model, some have implemented more of a substantive model, and others have adopted a mix between both. Some findings from the second stage of the research were published in Dabler and Parker (2004). Similarly, regarding market intervention by regulatory authorities, different member states treat market intervention differently, namely according to market-driven or non-market-driven models, or a mix between both approaches.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In vandag se besigheidswêreld bestaan twee teenoorgestelde pole. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In today’s world of business two opposite poles exist. On the one end is the world’s developed economy that has become saturated to such an extent that double digit growth has become a scarcity. However despite this fact continuous pressure is being placed on managers to grow their companies at a rate that will ensure an increase in shareholder value. On the other end are two thirds of the world’s population (4 billion people), the base of the economic pyramid (BOP) that is desperately poor and underserved in terms of basic needs, let alone luxury items. Double digit growth is achievable in these markets with the only competition being non-consumption in many cases. This research looks at how these two poles can be integrated into a mutually beneficial relationship. Companies could ensure sustaining levels of growth if there is an equal focus on sustainable as well as disruptive innovations. The case made in this research report is that companies cannot afford to focus on sustainable innovations alone, but need to invest in disruptive innovations as well. The innovation theories hold that the best place to test and develop disruptive innovations is in emerging markets. However too many multinational corporations (MNCs) have failed to access the illusive mass markets within emerging economies. It seems that their strategies were focussed on the developed segments within those emerging markets and not on the masses that constitute the BOP. Developing technologies for the BOP requires a local strategy and, amongst other things, a quantum leap in the price-performance ratio - in many cases a typical reduction in price by a factor of ten. The possibility then exists to take these solutions back to disrupt developed markets. There is a human aspect to this scenario as well. Poverty has indirectly been a cause of millions of people dying in Africa every year and many survivors live in poor conditions without basic services and being exploited by few informal businesses. The BOP offers an opportunity for the developed economies, not only to make a lot of money, but also to innovate their products and business models to empower poor people to start earning and generating income. This will in many ways help them to rise from poverty. It seems that growing business and generating wealth might be the most efficient vehicle to help lift the BOP from poverty. However, the BOP needs MNCs to bring their power and knowledge to these markets to ensure that it is done responsibly and in a sustainable manner.

De, Jong Piet. "Factors affecting information technology implementation in the mobile telecommunications industry : a family business case." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1486.

Full text
Abstract:
This treatise investigates how information technology (I.T.) enables growth in a family business (the firm) in Port Elizabeth. The firm operates in the mobile telecommunications sector. The objective of the study is to gain a deeper understanding on why family businesses adopt information technology in their firm by means of a case study. The firm found its technology (or lack thereof) completely out-dated compared to the competition and customer demands. The future of the firm was in jeopardy. The study starts with a literature review of the following three topics which form part of the scope of the research: 1. Family businesses; 2. Influence of I.T. as a driver of growth in business; and 3. An introduction into the mobile telecommunications industry. Data are collected through structured interviews with family members involved in the business. The data are consequently linked to the theory and provides insight as to what the drivers are for I.T. adoption and the required core competencies or critical success factors of the firm. Although it might seem trivial for a small family business to adopt information technology, the research concludes that I.T. is critical for continuous growth and survival of this family business. Conversely due to a lack of internal skills the firm is heavily reliant upon outside consultants for advice, implementation and support. Recommendations which are of particular interest to family businesses in a similar environment are: • Embrace technology early, utilise I.T. solutions to grow and enhance current competitive advantage, do not see I.T. as a competitive advantage alone (Pavlou & Sawy, 2006); • If information expertise is not present within the company it is advisable to invest in that expertise through recruitment, training, partnership, or outsourcing; • Ensure software meets specification / is effective enough – this can be achieved by frequent releases cycles with small changes instead of infrequent release cycles with many big changes; • Engage the consultants in a partnership by i.e. providing a profit share – this will ensure that the consultants are committed to the cause and will also ensure that their involvement is also in their own best interest; • Choose local consultants who are easily accessible – build relationships and focus on trust; • Create lock-in (Amit & Zott, 2001), provide tools free-ofcharge for customers, this will make switching to competitor more difficult; • Automate as much as possible, enable standard work practices, routinize; • Be ready to adjust the organisational structure or relinquish control (Bruquea & Moyanob, 2007)

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on problems experienced with the implementation of Business Intelligence (BI) in a telecommunications company in South Africa. The three main challenges addressed by the study were: the high BI implementation cost, the BI literacy of the BI end-users (business people do not necessarily know how to use BI tools), and the limited time to implement a BI solution (the company had to immediately start delivering on government targets). This study presents a conceptual framework that includes two models and a BI architecture. This framework may guide a company with the above-mentioned challenges through the implementation of a BI solution.

Abstract:
This thesis describes and analyses public procurement and its processes in general against the framework of industrial marketing and purchasing. In particular, it focuses on the public procurement of telecommunications (“telecom”) and its effects on the de-monopolization and development of the Swedish telecom market based on empirical material from three case studies, interviews and publicly available written sources. Public procurement is a significant part of any country’s economy. There is a plenitude of publicly available data due to Sweden’s and other public administrations’ transparency policies. Despite this fact, public procurement has been poorly covered in business administration literature when compared with the private sector’s purchasing and selling activities. This thesis tries to bridge the theoretical gap between knowledge of purchasing in business-to-business (“B2B”) and public procurement. Public procurement can be considered as a special type of B2B transaction and, particularly in the case of bigger procurements, of project purchasing. The important difference is that public procurement must follow specific and stricter legislation compared with the private sector’s purchasing activities. Among other things, public procurement law restricts contact between the procuring organisation and tenderers in some phases of the procurement process, allows no changes after the publishing of the Request for Proposal and opens the possibility to appeal to the court if any party considers that the procuring organisation has not acted in accordance with the public procurement rules. The telecom market has, over a period of thirty years, been transformed from a monopoly with practically no choice to a fully competitive market with several service and equipment providers as well as different pricing schemes and competing technical solutions. The development of the Swedish telecom market can be divided into four stages: Full monopoly, partial de-monopolization, full competition and system integration. The main driving forces behind this development have been the political decision to liberate the telecom market and achieve full competition as well as rapid and diverse technical development, which includes the introduction of mobile communication, broadband and Internet. At the same time, the dependency on well functioning telecom in the public sector is constantly increasing due to political agendas such as agencies availability 24 hours 365 days (“24/7 agency”), use of telecom as a means of rationalization and increased internal efficiency as well as new usages in areas that previously were not using telecom in their daily routines. The public procurement of telecom has changed from being a relatively simple administrative issue through being of technical concern to becoming more and more of strategic importance, especially in case of outsourcing and/or procuring system integration from a prime contractor.

Abstract:
Competing successfully in globalized markets requires a complex mix of product, price, promotion and distribution. It requires novel approaches to ownership in overseas involvement and the development of new modes of global relationships. In response to these needs, new types of alliances are emerging as corporations endeavor to meet the global challenge. At the forefront of globalization, the telecommunications industry is experiencing a high-rate of cross-border alliance formation.
This thesis attempts to straddle both business and legal domains, on national and international levels, to survey the evolution of the telecommunications industry and to envisage the future prospects of multinational telecom carriers with respect to the conduct of transnational alliances for international expansion. Chapter 1 describes the changes occurring in the field of telecommunications, while Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 provide an essential understanding of the motivations and the modalities of cross-border strategic alliances and propose contracting techniques for the purpose of surmounting managerial and operational challenges that may be confronted when engaging in global strategic alliances. With a focus on the telecommunications industry, Chapter 4 explores the motives of and difficulties encountered by multinational telecom carriers in using alliances to expand globally, and examines their business strategies and performing phases. Chapter 5 further questions the necessity of using cross-border strategic alliances in an increasingly international competitive environment by examining the current national and international regimes with respect to the transactions of telecom services. The Conclusion reviews significant factors that may infringe upon the use of strategic alliances as a business strategy.

Ani, Isaac Yaw. "The relationship between environmental uncertainty and business-level strategy in the telecommunications sector in Ghana." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2372.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of the relationship between environmental uncertainty and business-level strategy has received less attention in developing economies, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this thesis is to examine perceived uncertainty in a developing country to find out how organisations strategically respond to this phenomenon. Using a purposive sample method, one of the six licensed telecommunications organisations in Ghana was selected for an in-depth case study. The qualitative research method was used for data collection and analysis. The results showed that the high level of perceived uncertainty in the telecommunications business environment in Ghana influenced the organisation to adopt informal planning, focused on short-term objectives in order to respond quickly to the turbulent and unpredictable environment. The study concluded that customer behaviour, economic instability and regulatory environment were the most influential external environmental factors that affected strategic decisions in the telecommunications sector in sub-Saharan Africa. In exploring the relationship between environmental uncertainty and business-level strategy the study found a link between environmental uncertainty and the selection of business-level strategy in an organisation in sub-Saharan Africa. The result of the study contributed to the debate in the literature that the strategic response to the perception of the environment by managers in sub-Saharan Africa operating in a different cultural backgrounds was not different from managers in the developed world.

Abstract:
The recent development of accounting in Indonesia has been quite substantial. The change of accounting orientation, appointment of more accountants as CEO, the start of a litigation era and more blame for accounting work are simple examples of changes in the accounting function in Indonesia. The increased of appreciation for accountants has, however, not been accompanied by development of accounting system in Indonesia, which has been characterised by dependence on other systems and international standards. This study explores the link between government policy, specifically privatisation, and the accounting role, from the perspective of public policy, which is discussed in terms of public administration and economy. The purpose of this chapter is to indicate the background of the study and to connect this with the process of study. In other words, it will introduce the relationship among the chapters of this thesis.

Abstract:
Project management (PM) plays a significant role in achieving the company’s goal and objectives. Due to its significant role, it is essential that the project managers use processes which remain focussed on the company’s business strategy. However, some implementations of the company’s business strategy have led to failures as a result of misalignment between project management and the company’s business strategy. Such misalignment has an impact on both the project management and business strategy and may lead to problems in the overall functioning of the business, including the implementation of the company’s business strategy through the projects. This research was undertaken to investigate the problem of aligning project management process with the company’s business strategy which has not been fully investigated to-date. This investigation aims to provide a deeper understanding and more holistic analysis of the key factors, such as stakeholders and contextual factors (AF), which enable or inhibit this alignment in order to develop a conceptual framework that addresses this research gap. This study examines and analyses the alignment process, by considering the key factors at the early planning phase of project management. To address the research gap, the study employs a qualitative, multiple case study approach in the interpretive paradigm. Data was collected via interviews of senior personnel (executives and project managers), mainly from three managerial levels of the organisation, including corporate, business, and functional levels in four telecommunication companies of the private sector in Saudi Arabia. The investigation was carried out by collecting data through semi-structured interviews to critically explore collectively the perspectives of the executives and the project managers on their experience of managing and executing the company’s business strategy and the projects. Written and electronic documentations as well as non-participant observations also served as important triangulation and complementary sources in understanding the phenomenon being studied and as a means of gaining additional perspectives and further insights on key issues. This study provides a novel contribution to the alignment process of project management to business strategy. The original contribution and findings of this study contribute to the growing body of knowledge of project management by developing a practical framework to benefit both academics and practitioners and to increase awareness of the alignment process. This holistic conceptual framework includes two sets of factors that impact the alignment process. Additionally, it provides a unique prescriptive standard and a code of practice for practitioners seeking to realise efficient and effective alignment.

Sirichuwong, Wasunee. "A Challenge for Change: a Thai Telecommunications Case Study." Thesis, full-text, 2009. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/2011/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is set in the context of increased competition and rapid change in the telecommunications industry in Thailand. The aim of the research and the selected methodological tool of benchmarking is to contribute to improvement of work performance and to provide a basis for such improvement in the Business Management Sector III, including development of employee skills and knowledge, and increasing technical and professional capabilities. This study investigates the workplace practices of TOT Corporation Public Company (TOT) employees, comparing two divisions and utilizing the findings to contribute to plans for continuous improvement. The research complements the corporation's overall strategy to become a learning organization. Qualitative ethnographic research methodology is employed usmg a case study approach and descriptive statistical information is gathered using the methodological tool of internal benchmarking. The internal benchmarking is conducted in the phases of planning analysis integration, action phase and maturity. The research tools employed to conduct the study are observation, interview and self-reflection. The comparison of the revenue sharing process of Sector III, Divisions I and III staff from the observations, interviews and self-reflection provides details of changes deemed to be desirable to be adopted, according to eight themes namely, system management, time management, learning, learning organization, teamwork, motivation, professional development and benchmarking. It is indicated that there are key factors that TOT should consider regarding its organization and staff. An organization where people continually learn how to learn together, should ultimately become a learning organization and its staff require professional development and motivation. However, environmental and financial issues cannot all be resolved immediately and long term planning is required before full movement to a learning organization can occur. This thesis has identified areas of new knowledge for TOT. Benchmarking the two divisions enhances knowledge, understanding and self-development which can bring about the competitive edge that TOT requires. It not only pennits improved work processes but also conceptual thinking, although this is an ongoing process and change will continue to occur. The system management, time management, learning organization, professional development, teamwork and motivation are aspects that TOT should consider for attaining best practice. Knowledge management is required to allow staff to become learners and have improved performance. Employees can learn from their working experience in order to become regular and lifelong learners. This in tum is likely to lead TOT to become a learning organization. This study of performance and change in a large telecommunications company makes a contribution to the industry both nationally and internationally. It contributes to our understanding and knowledge of how change may be managed in a traditional organization in such a way as to enable it to move towards becoming a learning organization.

Abstract:
Income decreasing strategies conducted by management could be harmful for various stakeholders. One example is big bath accounting, which could be accomplished in numer- ous ways. This study focus on big baths achieved by recognising impairments of goodwill. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine patterns of association between big bath accounting and impairment of goodwill within the telecommunication service industry in Europe. Further, this study aim at contributing to the discussion regarding utilisation of big baths through impairments of goodwill, and takes the perspective of an external stakehold- er. Delimitations - The study is restricted to European telecommunication entities comprised in STOXX Europe 600 Index. Method - This study was conducted using a hybrid of qualitative and quantitative research strategy with a deductive approach. The five indicators used to identify various big bath behaviours were inspired and derived from theory and previous research. Data from 2009 to 2015 was collected from the companies’ annual reports and websites, and analysed by the help of codification of each fulfilled indicator where 2009 merely served as a compara- tive year for 2010. By the use of a scoreboard the collected data was summarised on an ag- gregated yearly basis as the industry, not the specific companies, were analysed. Empirical findings - The results of this study suggests that big baths are executed among tele- communication companies within Europe. These are conducted simultaneously as impair- ments of goodwill are present, facilitated by earning management. A possible explanation is considered to be the room for interpretation inherent in IAS 36, enabling goodwill impair- ments to be recognised on managers’ command. Thereby an impairment could be “saved” for better or worse circumstances, or recognised when there exist an opportunity to max- imise (the manager's) wealth in the future. This study reveal the co-occurrence of goodwill impairments and big bath-indications, however a review of causal relationships are not en- abled by the limitations of the chosen method.

Abstract:
As a relatively new phenomenon compared to other ways of executing an international strategy, Strategic Business Alliances (SBAs) lack the theoretical support that most of their longer-established counterparts enjoy. Yet, it is our belief that the widespread use of SBAs in a large number of manufacturing and service sectors necessitates the development of a theoretical foundation. One of the contributions of this thesis is the assessment of the suitability of an established theoretical framework: Nalebuff and Brandenburger's game theoretical "Co-opetition". Whilst the authors had a much wider domain than SBAs in mind when they developed their theory, we will argue that Co-opetition can be an extremely suitable theory to assess deciding developments with regard to SBAs. Our empirical analysis of the major telecommunication SBAs does, thereto, not only provide a comprehensive overview of the most prominent alliance activities in this sector but it also serves as input to assess Co-opetition's suitability as a theoretical framework on developments related to SBAs. Besides the overall suitability of Co-opetition we will further assess which of the two extremes of the theory's central notion of the new Mindset, peace and war, best represents developments we witness in the telecommunication industry. In order to achieve that we have selected two theories that provide a clear representation of the two extremes. The comparison of the applicability of these two representing theories leads us to conclude that regarding SBAs in telecommunications the "peace element" of Co-opetition's Mindset is more applicable than the "war element".

Abstract:
Organisations are becoming increasingly aware of the necessity to maintain sustainable long-term relationships with customers in order to survive in the global competition. They are also aware that the changing needs and purchase patterns of customers requires them to choose differentiated customer-oriented marketing strategies so as to acquire a competitive advantage over their rivals and enhance their business performance. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) enables organisations to create and manage relationships with customers more effectively through a detailed and accurate analysis of consumer data using various information technologies. Several CRM theories like the resource-based view (RBV), and theories of institutions, cultures, entrepreneurship, and dynamic theory can help a company gain over competitors. If implemented appropriately, the CRM approach can help a firm with managerial efficiency, cost reduction, enhanced customer services, and increased sales and profits. The present study aims to develop a novel and comprehensive model to measure the effect of CRM resources over CRM capabilities and the effects on business performance. The present study covers infrastructural and cultural CRM resources with CRM capabilities. The results are based on information collected from three Kuwaiti mobile network operators using a questionnaire in adherence with ethical guidelines. The study measures business performance comprehensively from financial and marketing perspectives using regression analysis to determine if there is a mediation role between two variables. The results show that CRM infrastructural resources positively and directly affect CRM capabilities. However, the effect of customer and learning orientation cultures on CRM capabilities is considerably stronger than that of infrastructural resources. The study also reveals that CRM capabilities significantly and positively affect business performance from marketing and financial standpoints although the effect on marketing performance was stronger.

Problem:

What are the differences and similarities between public attitudes and responses towards the series of Tele2 commercials and actual Tele2’s expectations of customers’ attitudes towards their commercials?

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to describe the correspondence between the feelings and reactions customers poses towards the advertisements and the company’s expectations embodied in the commercial appeal and the communicated message

Method:

Method includes collection of the information concerning theories, models and Tele2 from different sources; interview with the company to figure out details about the advertising campaign, particularly TV commercials and the survey with a sample of respondents in order to investigate their perception of TV commercials. The retrieved data was analyzed statistically and theoretically according to the selected theoretical framework.

Results:

The three steps sequence analysis (cognition-affect-conation) revealed that Tele2 was absolutely successful on the middle stage, where the company managed to make people remember and like their commercials. However, the more effort needs to be embodied into the first and the last stages, where the company seems not to understand customers’ perceptions and expectations fully, according the survey results. It was found out that the advertising campaign was perceived by TV watchers neither informative, nor persuasive.

Abstract:
The value of data is growing to an increasing extent. The increased amount of available data has enabled business intelligence to take great strides in development. Organizations use data in order to enhance parts or entire operations within the organization. Business intelligence supports organizations in the management of data and mainly to create decision support. However, business intelligence is a broad topic which can be affected by factors such as Big Data or Cloud computing and can be applied in different ways. Previous studies shows that only a few organizations have succeeded in increasing profitability after implementation of business intelligence. This study therefore aims to create a deeper understanding of how business intelligence is used within a telecommunications company to create decision support connected to enhancing business processes. The choice of industry and organization in this study is based on the fact that the industry is one of the most data-intensive industries. The thesis relates to previous research and theories. The previous research is used in order to understand the challenges as well as the benefits and future potential of the subject. The theories are used to understand various key factors such as information systems or the combination of business intelligence and Business Process Management.  The result of the essay is created from semi-structured interviews with respondents who work within a telecommunications company and contribute to confirming the theory and answering the questions.

Abstract:
This research investigates mobile service design and engineering in the mobile telecommunications industry. The mobile telecommunication business is shifting from one that was voice-centric to one that is almost all data-centric; thanks to recent rapid advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The underlying reasons behind this shift can be traced back to two main issues that are interlinked. The first and major reason is that telecoms (telecommunication companies) are trying to generate new revenue streams based on data and information transmissions, given the saturation of the voice market. This is rational given the market opportunities in one direction and the pressures being generated by the current economic downturn from the other direction. The second reason relates to the flexibility of data, compared to voice. Indeed, the number of services that can be developed on the basis of data are much greater than those that can be developed on the basis of voice. However, the design and engineering of successful and innovative mobile data services has proven to be a complex undertaking. The number of effective mobile data services is relatively small and the revenue generated from such offerings has generally been below expectations. This research develops an ontological framework to help in changing this situation, and making mobile services engineering more effective and successful, following the design-science research paradigm. Design-science research, in general, aims to solve unstructured but relevant organizational or social problems through the development of novel and useful artefacts. As the current research aims to help in solving the mobile data services engineering dilemma by developing a purposeful ontological framework, the design-science research paradigm is deemed fitting. Within this paradigm, the author develops a novel design approach specified for ontology engineering, termed “OntoEng”. This design approach is used in this research for developing the ontological framework. The developed ontological framework is founded on business model thinking. The idea is that creating innovative mobile data services requires developing innovative business models. Indeed, innovative business models can help translate technological potential into economic value and allow telecoms to achieve their strategic objectives. The ontological framework includes the development of an ontology, termed “V4 Mobile Service BM Ontology” as well as “Mobile Key Value Drivers” for designing and engineering innovative mobile data services. The V4 Mobile Service BM Ontology incorporates four design dimensions: (1) value proposition including targeting; (2) value architecture including technological and organizational infrastructure; (3) value network dealing with aspects relating to partnerships and co-operations; and finally (4) value finance relating to costs, pricing, and revenue structures. Within these four dimensions, sixteen design concepts are identified along with their constituent elements. Relationships and interdependencies amongst the identified design constructs are established and clear semantics are produced. The research then derives six key value drivers for mobile service engineering as follows: (a) Market Alignment; (b) Cohesion; (c) Dynamicity; (d) Uniqueness; (e) Fitting Network-Mode; and (f) Explicitness. The developed ontological framework in this research is evaluated to ensure that it can be successfully implemented and performs correctly in the real world. The research mainly utilizes case analysis methods to ensure the semantic correctness of the ontological framework. Indeed, the developed ontological framework is employed as an analytical lens to examine the design and engineering of three key real-life cases in the mobile telecommunications industry. These cases are: (1) Apple’s iPhone Services and Applications; (2) NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode Services; and (3) Orange Business Services. For further validation, the developed ontological framework is evaluated against a set of criteria synthesized from ontology engineering and evaluation literature. These criteria are: Clarity; Coherence; Conciseness; Preciseness; Completeness; and Customizability. The developed ontological framework is argued to make significant contributions for theory, practice, and methodology. For theory, this research provides (1) a novel ontological framework for designing and engineering mobile data services; (2) a unified framework of the business model concept; and (3) a new design approach for ontology engineering in information systems. For practice, the current research provides practitioners in the telecommunications industry with systematic and customizable means to design, implement, analyze, evaluate, and change new and existing mobile data services to make them more manageable, effective, and creative. For methodology, the use of the design- science research paradigm for ontology engineering signifies the focal methodological contribution in this research given its novelty. This research also contributes to the understanding of the design-science research paradigm in information systems as it is relatively new. It provides a working example in which the author illustrates how recognizing design-science research as a paradigm is essential and useful to the research in information systems discipline.
