Abstract:
With the entry of 3G and WiMAX players, the Indian mobile subscriber base is expected to reach 1110 million by the end of 2015. To meet mobile infrastructure demand, India will require approximately 350,000 to 400,000 mobile telecommunications towers in the next 7 to 8 years. Presently only 40% of mobile telecommunications towers are shared in India. The high growth of subscribers and initial cost of mobile telecommunications towers and license conditions will force mobile network operators to share infrastructure with other mobile network operators, specifically with new operators. The Indian government has allowed sharing of passive and active components of mobile telecommunication infrastructure. With the changing demand of the telecommunications infrastructure, many new telecommunications tower business entities and companies and mobile telecommunications tower business models are being explored. In this paper, the author presents the landscape of the mobile telecommunications tower industry in India, which consists of four types of companies and trends with respect to the strategies of telecommunication tower companies, especially tenancy ratio. Emerging features of the mobile telecommunication towers industry in India are also presented.

Abstract:
Telecommunication infrastructure is part of critical infrastructure because it has a vital role in the community and affects the country's economy. Therefore, telecommunications infrastructure can be classified as a vital national object, requiring a particular security mechanism in its deployment. However, telecommunication infrastructure has different characteristics than other sectors, where the operation is fixed and mobile. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, data is obtained from benchmarks and interviews with resource persons from various fields through several Forum Group Discussion activities. Each telecommunications network operator can apply for National Vital Objects in the Telecommunications Sector based on the mechanism under the guidelines for determining the national vital object in the telecommunications sector stipulated through a Ministerial Regulation. The regulation covers various aspects, including the mechanism for determining, evaluating, fostering, and responsibilities of National Vital Objects in the Telecommunications Sector. In its implementation, the National Vital Objects in the Telecommunications Sector manager coordinates with various security parties, such as the Indonesian National Police. With the policy of the National Vital Objects in the Telecommunications Sector implementation mechanism, it is hoped that the telecommunications infrastructure can be well protected so that the business climate of telecommunications operations remains conducive and telecommunications services can always support the development and strengthening of the national economy.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the long-run impact of telecommunications revenue and telecommunications investment on economic growth of Ghana for the time horizon 1976-2007. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses the Augmented Dickey Fuller and Phillips Perron unit root test to explore the stationarity property of the variables and the Engle-Granger residual-based test of cointegration to model an appropriate restricted error correction model. Findings – The outcome of the analysis produced mixed results. Telecommunications revenue does not contribute significantly whilst telecommunications investment does. Practical implications – Policy makers will have to deal with a conundrum; while designing targeted policies that will attract more telecommunication investment in order to maximize the corresponding revenues and the economic growth it brings in its wake, they must at the same time find ways and resources to grow the economy to a point or threshold where revenue from telecommunications can have the much needed impact on their economies. Originality/value – The study is one of the first that has investigated the line of causality between telecommunication revenue and economic growth unlike previous research that mainly focused on the impact of telecommunication infrastructure on economic development.

Abstract:
This paper empirically studies the impact of telecommunications infrastructure construction on economic and social innovative development using panel data from 31 provinces in China spanning from 2009 to 2022. The research findings indicate that telecommunication infrastructure significantly promotes innovation in terms of R&D investment, knowledge output, and application output. In addition, at various stages of telecommunication technology development, the impact on innovative development varies. Iterative updates in telecommunication technology drive higher R&D expenditures, facilitating better utilization of innovation outcomes in industries. Moreover, there are regional disparities in the influence of telecommunications infrastructure on economic and social innovative development. In the eastern regions, telecommunications infrastructure construction primarily promotes mobile communication, with clear spillover effects. In contrast, in western regions, it mainly facilitates fixed communication networks. Thus, further strengthening telecommunications infrastructure construction provides a new impetus for social innovative development and long-term sustainability. It is essential to persistently advance the coordinated construction of mobile and fixed communication infrastructure to achieve regional development coordination.

Abstract:
In this paper we investigate how telecommunications infrastructure affects economic growth. We use evidence from 21 OECD countries over a 20-year period to examine the impacts that telecommunications developments may have had. We jointly estimate a micromodel for telecommunication investment with a macro production function. We find evidence of a significant positive causal link, especially when a critical mass of telecommunications infrastructure is present. Interestingly, the critical mass appears to be at a level of telecommunications infrastructure that is near universal service. (JEL O57, O47, L69)

Mobile telecommunications have been facing a vast number of challenges across the globe, with special emphasis on emerging countries. Their increasing importance for economic growth of countries make the presence of infrastructure essential in a progressively more global and technological world. Sharing telecommunication infrastructures can facilitate the implementation of mobile communications in a giving region or country. In the case of Mozambique, one of the poorest country of the world, a sharing strategy could potentially allow for a rapid expansion of telecommunication services. In this work project, a tool that supports the techno-economic study of scenarios of telecommunication infrastructure sharing was developed. Through this mechanism, scenarios that consider the Mozambican’s reality have been set up. This dissertation aims then to contribute to the development of the telecommunications sector in emerging markets.

Möller, Niels. "Automatic control in TCP over wireless." Licentiate thesis, KTH, School of Electrical Engineering (EES), 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-444.

Full text
Abstract:

Over the last decade, both the Internet and mobile telephony has become parts of daily life, changing the ways we communicate and search for information. These two distinct tools are now slowly merging. The topic of this thesis is TCP over wireless, and the automatic control that is used both within the system, from the link-layer power control to the end-to-end congestion control. It consists of three main contributions.

The first contribution is a proposed split-connection scheme for downloads to a mobile terminal. A wireless mobile terminal requests a file or a web page from a proxy, which in turn requests the data from a server on the Internet. During the file transfer, the radio network controller (RNC) sends radio network feedback (RNF) messages to the proxy. These messages include information about bandwidth changes over the radio channel, and the current RNC queue length. A novel control mechanism in the proxy uses this information to adjust the sending rate. The stability and convergence speed of the proxy controller is analyzed theoretically. The performance of the proposed controller is compared to end-to-end TCP Reno, using ns-2 simulations of realistic use cases. It is shown that the proxy control is able to reduce the response time experienced by users, and increase the utilization of the radio channel. The changes are loalized to the RNC and the proxy; no changes are required to the TCP implementation in terminal or server.

The second contribution is the analysis of an uplink channel using power control and link-layer retransmissions. To be able to design the link-layer mechanisms in a systematic way, good models for the link-layer processes, and their interaction with TCP, are essential. The use of link-layer retransmissions transforms a link with constant delay and random losses into a link with random delay and almost no losses. As seen from the TCP end points, the difference between such a link and a wired one is no longer the loss rate, but the packet delay distribution. Models for the power control and link-layer retransmissions on the link are used to derive packet delay distribution, and its impact on TCP performance is investigated.

The final contribution considers ways to optimize the link-layer processes. The main result is that TCP performance, over a wireless link with random retransmission delays, can be improved by adding carefully chosen artificial delays to certain packets. The artificial delays are optimized off-line and applied on-line. The additional delay that is applied to a packet depends only on the retransmission delay experienced by that same packet, and this information is available locally at the link.

Abstract:
Turkey is considering privatizing its telecommunications system. Any developing country must analyze whether its economic, social, and institutional environment is appropriate for the privatization of a utility. The purposes of this study are (1) to establish a model to assist policy makers, (2) to analyze whether Turkey meets the prerequisites for telecommunications privatization, and (3) to provide Turkish leaders pragmatic policy alternatives pertaining to privatization of the Turkish Telecommunications system.High inflation rate, weakness of the private sector and the lack of regulatory regime are the major impediments facing Turkey's privatization efforts. Turkey might consider several options including (1) not privatizing at all, (2) retaining public ownership of the network operations while privatizing only the physical equipment market, or (3) following the British privatization model.

Abstract—The existence of telecommunication lines in the nearby should be considered with the design of overhead transmission line. Due to the permanent load on power lines, induced electromotive force, noise and interference voltage occur in telecommunications lines. For this reason, these impacts must be carefully investigated in order to implement adequate protection measures. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of power lines on telecommunications lines, using the example of a report that considered the impact of the 2x400 kV power line Transformer Station Bajina Basta – border of Bosnia and Herzegovina/ border of Montenegro on telecommunication lines. The analysis has been done in accordance with JUS N.C0.101 and JUS N.C0.102 standards. In order to simplify calculations, TeleCAD-GIS software package was used in the analysis. At the end of the paper, solutions that can reduce the effect of power lines on telecommunications lines will be discussed.

Abstract:
The recent progresses in mobile telecommunications technologies have allowed railway telecommunications technology to go a step forward, and, in the same way, the railway control systems. In this sense, while the mobile telecommunications technology evolved from the first generation of analogue mobile communication systems to what is known today as B3G (Beyond 3G), the same occurred with the telecommunication systems used in railways, from those based on analogue telecommunications, to the most recent ones based on 2G such as GSM-R or TETRA. Till recently, there was a technological gap regarding high mobility environments, high transmission rate and high interactivity (low latency). However, new emerging telecommunications technologies have shortened this gap significantly. This way, the train control systems will be affected by the availability of telecommunications technologies capable of offering earth-train broadband communications in real time. This article presents a telecommunications network architecture based on WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) mobile technology (IEEE 802.16e) that fulfils the telecommunications needs in the railway environment. The WiMAX mobile technology most relevant features are: transmission rates up to 30Mbps at 15 km distance; mobility support up to 200km/h; QoS, security, low latency, fast, scalable and cost effective deployment, mainly compared to GSM-R deployment. In the mobile node design of this network telecommunications architecture, the multipath fading effect, and the Doppler effect, present in high speed mobility scenarios, have been taken into account. An improvement in the handoff between BSs, through a neighbouring and predictive mobility algorithm, is included. The architecture proposed supports the functional and system requirements identified in the UIC Project EIRENE (European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network), and demanded to GSM-R technology. Measures on a real testbed and a model developed with the discrete event simulation tool, Opnet, have been employed in this work.

Abstract:
Atmospheric turbulence is one of the limiting phenomena in interesting applications and fields such of optical telecommunications and Observational Astronomy. Both Telecommunication and Aerospace Engineering students may encounter those applications in their professional careers, thus, there is the necessity to introduce this phenomenon and its impact on those fields at the academic formation stage. In order to teach students of the principles and effects of the atmospheric turbulence in optical propagation, and to illustrate how to solve these problems, two different applications written in MATLAB© were developed. In this communication both applications and the theoretical background are presented, and the designed activity for Telecommunication Engineers is shown. Results obtained by students and their experience performing the activity are also presented.

Abstract:
The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) defines the competences for professional practice of a Telecommunications Engineer. The School of Telecommunication Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia, Spain) provides an integrated education program consisting of a Graduate (GITST) + Master (MUIT). The GITST course offers four specialization tracks: Electronics, Telematics, Communication Systems and Multimedia for the proper acquisition of knowledge and competences of the future Telecommunications Engineers. In 2018, the graduate program has implemented a structural change in the organization of subjects for reinforcing important skills, in which a course on digital electronics design and verification (Integration of Digital Systems, ISDIGI) has been transformed into a core subject of the study plan. In this paper, we describe the methodology and adaptation of ISDIGI (i.e. a project-based learning intermediate HDL course that includes design and verification abilities) to the new GITST Curriculum. In addition, this paper describes the process of moving from specialized to core subject.

Abstract:
This work describes an information system regarding to the telecommunication service with the goal to inform to the telephony service users about the operators signal quality and the users’ opinion about the telecommunication operators. The system contains information of cellular base station locations and the results are crossed with sentiment analyses of sentences extracted from a social network, which are related to the telecommunication services. The study aims to detect complaints and dissatisfaction of users about a determined service, helping to make a relation between the users’ complains extracted from social network with the number of base stations in the same geographic area of the user's social network. Therefore, the proposed information system can be used by the National Telecommunications Agency of each country for monitoring the quality-of-service of cellular network operators.
